Vineyard Man enjoying renewed popularity in Thailand

Television drama ratings have been released for the month of September in Thailand, and six of the top ten series are Korean dramas.

AGB Nielsen Media, a media research company, released the numbers, and the 2006 KBS trendy drama The Vineyard Man, starring Yoon Eun-hye and Oh Man-seok, came out on top. Although its initial run in Korea garnered low ratings (it was up against juggernaut Jumong), The Vineyard Man was the most-watched drama by Thai viewers last month. Thai and Korean ratings, while both recorded by Nielsen, are measured differently, but a general conversion puts Vineyard‘s Thai numbers at about two to three times its Korean ratings.

Here’s the full top 10, which comprises six kdramas, three Chinese series, and one “foreign” other:

  1. The Vineyard Man
  2. Chinese drama Legend of the Demigods
  3. Chinese drama Justice Pao
  4. SBS’s 2007-08 sageuk drama King and I
  5. SBS’s highly acclaimed 2006 series Alone in Love
  6. Chinese drama The Sword and the Chess of Death
  7. Angel Yr. 3 — perhaps they mean Whedon’s Angel?
  8. MBC’s 2005 hit romantic comedy My Name Is Kim Samsoon
  9. KBS’s 2006 mania drama Goodbye Solo
  10. MBC’s daily drama Be Strong, Geum-soon

Wow that's amazing how there's 6 Korean dramas in the top 10 ratings from another country and they're old dramas too. So much for the notion that the Korean wave is waning eh?

Do you have any ratings from other Asian countries?

i was under the understanding that "The Vineyard Man" was KBS's highest rated in that time slot. And according to dramawiki, it was in the top 20 highest rated series in 2006. So in essence it didnt suffer from say "low" ratings. But any drama compared to "Jumong" was "low" in percentile.

I watch the vineyard man a long time ago. It's hilarious and make sense because Oh Man Seok portrayed the country bum so fine. I used to lived in the country side, a lot a guy I know just like his character.

Hm, wasn't this supposed to be -how shall I put this?- not so good? Mind you, I have never watched it so I really have no idea. Then again, to each their own, right?

Ah...The Vineyard Man is one of my all time favorite K-Dramas despite the low ratings when it's airing.
It's also one of the K-Dramas with the happiest ending ever!!!

just how credible is this? I read Rain's concert in vietnam was blown up by the korean press while the vietnamese thought his performance was so-so. This must be the ratings of FOREIGN DRAMAS in Thailand. THAIS WATCH OUR DRAMAS...NO WAY IT WILL NOT BE TOP-RATED. BAD REPORTING!

Why are their top rated dramas all foreign? Does Thai have no drama shows of their own? Their population, at 60 million, exceeds South Korea's so this is not the case of a small country without resources to produce their own shows.

Jeanie - i think the rating accounts for only top 'foreign' dramas. I can confidently say, being Thai myself, that there are plenty of Thai dramas that are just as cheezy (although i do luv them!! ^__^) produced and shown in Thailand and neighboring countries. I believe some Korean producers have bought some of the Thai storylines and movie plots and adapted to Korean ones too and in the work on production. If anyone's interested YouTube's got a good selection with English subs (search under Thai 'lakorn' which means drama in Thai)

"i was under the understanding that “The Vineyard Man” was KBS’s highest rated in that time slot. And according to dramawiki, it was in the top 20 highest rated series in 2006."

hell_YEH, Vineyard Man started at a low 7% and worked its way gradually up to a 15% finish. Not bad, but they were rather low considering this was Yoon Eun-hye's comeback drama after Goong, and Jumong was pulling in monster 40% ratings. I don't believe it was KBS's top prime-time drama that year; Hwang Jini averaged in the 20% range, for instance.

Personally, i thought the series was light and kinda fun, but i got bored two-thirds of the way through. It's pleasant, but predictable.

HELL YEAH!!!! :D

"Not bad, but they were rather low considering this was Yoon Eun-hye’s comeback drama after Goong, and Jumong was pulling in monster 40% ratings."

I read Vineyard Man's performance differently. VM was the best performing KBS show (actually maybe any show from any station) scheduled opposite Jumong's run. VM did become a sleeper hit. (and this was also reinforced by YEH/OMS getting recognition at the KBS Awards 2006.) VM established YEH as a legitimate draw apart from the Goong phenomenon, and it was why she was paid big money to do Coffee Prince.

Actually, Vineyard Man was a pretty popular sell internationally. Back in 2006-7, it had a long life at the local store.

^ Yes, but we know those station awards are a joke.

VM had a respectable run, and it definitely wasn't a flop. But there's nothing wrong in recognizing it wasn't the ratings success they wanted it to be. Naturally it has its fans who don't care about the ratings one way or another.

Vineyard Man is hilarious :) But I do agree that it got a little boring 2/3s of the way through. A little repetitive I guess... But the ending made up for it :)

I'm also surprised how YEH get into it. She really got dark as the series progressed!

I love The Vineyard Man. I watched it so many times and can never get tired of it.

Oh Man Seok became my ideal guy after watching this series.

It was because of this series that YEH won her first Best Actress Award....and it was not just from any award show but from Korea Director's Guild's 2006 Grime Awards where the PD's from all the stations chose her along with Song Il Kook as Best Actress and Best Actor.

"But there’s nothing wrong in recognizing it wasn’t the ratings success they wanted it to be."

Yeah, but that's the thing. It wasn't projected to be a big rating success (if it were, it would have been scheduled in a different slot.) YEH was a unproven commodity, and it was Oh Man Suk's debut as a TV lead. KBS was looking for something to counterprogram against Jumong, hoping for the best. It's like what SBS is doing with Tazza, which is doing respectably against East of Eden.

It can't be emphasized enough -- Vineyard Man's success was unique against Jumong mania, and that it gave YEH lead credibility and access to big money for her next project.

I didn't have high expectation for this drama but it turned out to be such a pleasant surprise for me.

To be quite honest, I was first reluctant to watch it because I hated Goong but it turns out, this drama turned me into a YEH and OMS fan. I loved their chemistry and acting.

It's a feel good drama. It was refreshing to see a korean series with such a happy ending that'll make you feel great for weeks.

I didn’t have high expectation for this drama at first too. But after watching it, it's now one of my favorite dramas. I watched it so many times and can never get tired of it. Some of the songs in the OST is really good too...it's really soothing.

This was my introduction to Yoon Eun Hye and I still favor it over her two, more highly-rated shows. Great setting, Oh Man-Suk, and YEH looking her prettiest. The first glimpse that I caught of her made me a fan. Something about her face and personality drew me in. Turns out she's this great all around talent with a seemingly limitless future ahead. It will be a good long time before people tire of this entity. How high is the sky for Miss Yoon? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I agree with robbo4 that it's something about YEH's face and personality that drew me in. She is just too cute.^^ I love all her dramas equally, but the Vineyard Man probably has the best scenery. It makes me wanna get away from city life and live in the country side surrounded by vineyards and orchards. Anyway, I can't wait for YEH's next project.

Jeanie - For Thais, we have our own dramatic television serials (soap operas), just called "Lakorn" . They are usually shown every night at primetime on Thai television channels and start at 8:30 pm.

An episode of a prime-time drama is usually two hours long (including commercials). A lakorn usually is a finished story, unlike Western "cliffhanger" dramas, but rather like Hispanic telenovelas. A series will run for about three months. It may air two or three episodes a week, the pattern usually being Monday-Tuesday, Wednesday-Thursday or Friday-Sunday.

A channel will air three lakorns simultaneously at any given time. Because they attract the most viewers, each channel competes for the most popular stars. While the "best" lakorns are shown at night right after the news, there are ones with smaller profiles (and shorter run time) in the evenings at around 5 to 6 pm.

In some cases, primetime lakorns are also shown on re-runs a couple of years after their initial release, in the afternoon.

Most of Thais are addicted to Lakorn, and others are love to watch foreign series e.g. USA., Korean, JPN on cable TV or someone else is a football mania :)

As I reminded for the most popular Korean Series which previously shown on Thailand free T.V. are "Autumn In My Heart" , "Winter Love Song" , "Full House" , "Dae Jung Geum", "Ju Mong", "Coffee Prince" , "King and I" , "VN".

I remembered both Dae Jung Geum and Ju Mong were aired at twilight time, also most Thais are simultaneously stayed home and watching them. The traffic was smooth. But "VN", it's less popular than both and all supports came from teenagers. Finally, I think it's OK. for the best top one, reasonable way.......

In Thailand, we got the "Korean Wave phenomenon" for 5-6 years and go on......
It's a landslide effects.... last decade, everything on fashions and series were JPN, but it's absolutely changed once Koreans come........:(

I think "Korean Fever" make the motto "Rome wasn't built in a day" comes true, but Rome of course couldn't be built without the hard-working Romans. So do Koreans too. :D

The so-called pop culture exports , including Korean movies, television series and music , is a branding exercise by South Korea which has been actively pursued by both the government and the private sector.

You are marvelous!!!! :)

Jeanie - Thailand has own Sitcoms as well.

Sitcom" comes from "Situation Comedy." It's a TV show that is one situation, which returns every week for you to watch. And, of course, it should be funny.

For example, "Friends" is a sitcom. The situation is a group of friends living in an apartment. And, it was funny.

Some sitcoms aren't very funny at all. Or maybe I just don't understand them.

Have a good day

Vineyard Man is still one of the most popular foriegn drama among Thais.I agree that Jumong is very good but not so many audiences watch it again and again like Vineyard Man.Even it ended 2 years ago, there are someone watch it from DVD.It is because of humor and happiness of the story, beautiful country scene and suitable acting of all stars.
I myself impressed in Jangtakki and Oh Man Seok since then. After see him twice in Seoul and Busan, I really fall in love with him. This guy is really multi-talented actor. And he is so nice to his fans.Once I met him,I can't help myself missing him everyday.I plan to see him in his musical play in Korea everytime I can.I usually write to him in his official website.
Now we do have his fan club in Thailand.I,as an big fan interpret his news to everyone there.
I don't pay much attention in any statistic data(even I understand about media rating very well).I just want to tell you that this drama is fascinating source of friendship and happiness for us.And I found my beloved actor for Vineyard Man.

I am so excited to watch this drama. I just found out about it because it was featured on dramafever..I've looked OMS up several times and don't know why I never saw this or it didn't register in my brain, but for some reason I'm feeling like this is going to be one of my favorites. I LOVED OMS in "WILD ROMANCE" and always want to see more of his acting skills!

the drama is simple but it has full of heart. what i like in this drama as well, is that yoon eun hye and oh man seok delivered the lines so well. they acted so naturally that it seemed like so real. no wonder they won as new male and female actor and actress.
the scenery in the countryside is very refreshing and revitalizing. who dont want to live here?
