There’s no accounting for Personal Taste
by javabeans
And to think, we almost had Joo Ji-hoon (Devil) and Yoon Eun-hye (Coffee Prince) back together in Personal Taste [개인의 취향], playing a straight guy masquerading as a gay guy to live with a straight girl (who harbors a crush on her gay friend but thinks he’s playing for the other team).
Now, not only will these two not be appearing in the drama together, the entire drama production has fizzled.
The drama had been in the pre-production stages, but PD Kim Sang-ho (Fantasy Couple) explains that the reason for this project’s demise was due to a difficulty in casting. Yoon Eun-hye pulled out of the project while the scripts were being written and they were unable to recast. Furthermore, Joo Ji-hoon’s involvement in the project was greatly “exaggerated” by the press.
Bummer. The drama, which was to be based on the novel of the same name, sounded like farcical fun in the making. Maybe I’ll just have to read the book instead.

Yoon Eun Hye NEVER agreed to be in this drama to begin with. so no she didn't just pull out while the script was being written. The media just blew everything out of proportion
When news about her being in Personal Taste first circulated, Yoon Eun Hye immediately released a statement squashing the rumours saying that her taking this project and collaborating with JJH is highly unlikely.
Another thing, is that it was apparent she wouldn't take another romantic comedy for her next drama.

"Personal Preference" cancelled, withdrawn from the planning stage "Yoon Eun Hye's rejection played a big part"
It has been revealed that the MBC drama "Personal Preference" has been cancelled. This drama became a hot topic when the possible casting of actress Yoon Eun Hye as the main lead actress was released.
Today on the 14th, PP's Kim SangHo PD revealed that the production of PP was cancelled. Saying, "We decided to abort it during the planning process" and that, "there were a number of reasons but we went through rough casting negotiations due to the excessive media coverage of the cast news which were released before official casting confirmation was done."
Kim PD also added that YEH was the one whom they most desired as their lead actress, but unfortunately they were in a situation where they were unable to proceed with the casting once they received rejection from YEH's side.
PP is a drama based off the romance novel of the same name, written by author Lee Saein. This drama was to be plotted around the life and instances of a frivolous lady who's after a gay room mate and the happenings between the two characters.
In addition, the actor to play alongside YEH was speculated to be YEH's partner from "Goong" Joo Ji Hoon, however Kim PD confirmed that, "I have neither met nor contacted Joo Ji H'oon's reps [regarding this]
The drama "Personal Preference" was meant to have been taken up by Kim Sangho of "Fantasy Couple" and acted out by lead actress of "Coffee Prince" Yoon Eun Hye, which had brought about hot attention.

I sort of agree with what someone said about YEH fans being REALLY passionate about everything YEH-related....seriously, almost fanatical. You don't see that a lot (like a group reaction towards a certain actor/actress/drama, etc...), that's why it tends to stick out...
But, I'm the same way with Lee Jun Ki, so I'm not judging anyone...lol...=)

as mentioned above, YEH did not "pull out" as it was revealed by KIM PD, that she never accepted the role.
and i am glad she rejected it, as it looked as though the whole production team was relying on her to pull this through.
what kind of production relies entirely on an actress? it just goes to show that the plot was weak, the PD was obviously not confident enough and the main "lead actor" whoever it may have been was not worth the extra mile.
and about YEH's fans being fanatical, aren't all fans fanatical and sensitive when it comes to their star?

Aww. YEH has been MIA for far too long. She should just get on with it although this romcom is just not what she needs right now.
As belleza suggested, with all the remakes being made these days, maybe YEH should be in a remake of All About Eve with Lee Junki playing her knight in shining armour. I'd watch that. :)

Gosh, my dream is the YEH and Eric tandem that supposed to happen in Que Sera Sera. Too bad Eric is in the army now. Have to wait couple more years to see them. I hope that that will be the very first project of Eric when he comes out of his military duty. When would that be?
Also, i hope that YEH will not be like the My Sassy Girl's lead actress (Jun Ji-hyun) who's career, in my opinion fizzled already. She became so choosy and never accepted another TV soap series, after her success. Hence, her Daisy movie is not as good in box-office and her hollywood stint got too much hype but i haven't seen it. What a waste of talent and time. She's getting older, the next thing she knows, she'll be playing ajumma roles. Any news? Is she (JJH) planning any soap in the future? I missed her beautiful face already

By the way, before anybody reacts, i'm a fanatic of both actresses. In my opinion, YEH is still too young to be choosy in her role. She should strike while the iron is still hot and learn to be a very, very good actress along the way. She will need them before she can be in the level of Choi Ji Woo, Lee Young Ae, Chae Rim, Moon So Ri and the late Choi Jin Sil. I think Ha Ji Won is almost there =).

Hmm...I don't really get how the Korean television production process works, but why can't script development and the production still go ahead? I mean, yes, it would be totally awesome if YEH and JJH were in it, but I'm sure that other actresses and actors could play those parts as well. I mean, I'm sure that there are other really popular Korean celebrities who can help carry the drama to ratings success; it doesn't HAVE to be YEH and JJH. The general story sounds pretty awesome and I would love to see it go into production.

OK Kidding!!! Anyway, YEH made the right call laying low for 2008 while mantaining her profile through CMs, spreads and music contributions. She's going to ride a backlash whatever she does next, but it won't be as bad now. She's in a difficult (though highly enviable) career position where she has A-list status without having yet developed A-list chops. Her line deliveries and her portrayal of subtler emotions still need a lot of work. At the same time, she probably wants to try something outside of rom-com (i.e. Que Sera Sera.)

YEH is a really good actress, but she's not exceptional. She is improving with every drama, so good for her! I think this is one of the reasons non-fan/non-anti has such a hard time understanding why YEH already has a sort of cult-like following...

i dont blame her for not wanting to work with JJH again cause their Goong fans
make up a lot of stupid rumours about them that hurt their image.
Their fans want for them so much to be a couple that they start making up stories all over the place that she is secretly married to JJH, is pregnant with his baby. That she's been on a hiatus because of her growing belly, and that the reason why she cut her nails is because she doesn't wanna hurt the baby while feeding him.
Who’d wanna have to deal with such nonsense? Fans need to know how to control themselves. It's ok to admire a celebrity, but it's not ok to think you know about their private life.

Ah, well, I wasn't interested in this drama because of that. I was interested because it sounded fun. I'd have loved to see YEH play the "girly girl" -such a different character from Eun Chan - falling in love for her fake-but-she-doesn't-know-gay BFF. Also, the thought of seeing JJH in such an outgoing, out-of-the-schemes role was appealing, imho.
It sounded like a fun switch-roles drama, you know? I have no idea what happened during the old Goong days...I wasn't around when G was aired, although I've heard rumors about some crazy fans. But hey, every actress or actor have crazy/obssessed fans. I've been around some crazy, crazy, *crazy* fans and yet, no matter how embarassing and intruding they were, I've never heard of actors rejecting or taking up a role because of their fanbase. I think actors do take into account what fans think or how they'll most likely react, but from this to acually not take up a job offer sounds like a big ah jump.

@Sere,
It's interesting to speculate how Goong affected the career of various actors and other shows. Originally, the producers wanted Boa (fascinating to reflect what it would have done in renewing her popularity in Korea) for the part. When Boa bowed out, they cast YEH due to her "young girl warrior" popularity on X-man (YEH was also surprisingly popular in China due to X-man, not from Baby Vox per se.) Because Goong was so popular, MBC requested an extension. That extension led to Jo Ji Hoon bowing out of Spring Waltz, which in turn led to Sung Yu Ri dropping out. Spring Waltz casts Seo Do Young and Han Hyo Joo (setting her career path to play opposite Lee Jung Ki in Iljimae.) This also led Sung Yu Ri to do Snow Queen (as an IOU to Yoon Suk Ho's production company), and it also eventually led to the production company to do a remake of Hong Gil Dong with Jo Ji Hoon and Sung Yu Ri (as well as Jo Hyung Jae.) Of course, that didn't work out, and so Kang Ji Hwan and Jang Geon Seok signed on to HGD, which has become an international hit . . like Goong.
"I have no idea what happened during the old Goong days…"
I think Goong's popularity is roughly the equivalent to Hana Yori Dango's popularity in Japan. Goong, Kim Sam Soon and My Girl (all of these shows ran within 8 months of each other) kind of established the current generation of Hallyu. Less melodrama, more rom-com; in particular, the female viewing audience strongly identified with the actresses as well as the male leads.
Goong was itself a genius concept. It wasn't just that this fusion updated the trendy with all the intrigue and pomp and circumstance of saguek tropes and devices. It was that the show also fetishized the royal coats, the luxurious (and especially non-Asian) hauteur, and the magnificent (and magnificently self-important) celebrity of Charles & Diana, Princess Diaries, God Save the Queen, etc. Rarely has a K-drama romance been given a shinier brocade. It's also immaculate image by concept that transcends truly great chemistry, and so asking for the same magic to strike is probably unrealistic. Most K-dramas don't have a parade celebrating their union. But, in not so explicit words, many people still want to see the confetti.

@ annoyed,
I am pretty sure that was not the reason why YEH rejected Personal Preference.
YEH has always been praised for her professionalism by her seniors, so though she may be annoyed by the damaging fabricated rumours, she wouldn't go as far as to reject this series if she really liked the script.
The thing is, even before the rumor about Personal Preference came about, YEH left a video message for her fans telling them to please be patient about her selection for her new project, cause she promises that she'll return as a more mature YEH.
I think her reason for not taking Personal Preference, is because it's another romantic comedy and it is very similar to Coffee Prince. That is just begging to be typecasted right there. She is more careful of choosing her next project.
In my opinion, the PD and etc...heavily relied on the YEH and JJH tandem for the ratings. I mean come on, there are pleanty of korean celebrities who could have acted on this so why cancel it?

i agree with you in saying that YEH most likely would be type casted if she took up the role. But despite this, if YEH really really liked the script, than I'm sure she would have taken it up. But in my opinion, i think YEH might have been turned off by the PD and production team's sole focus and dependence on YEH.
and though i agree with you in that the PD etc relied on YEH, i am very sure they didn't depend on JJH as well since they didn't even consider him nor approach him regarding this.
I wonder what would have happened say the media threw in YEH's name along with a different but this time high profile actor, such as Lee Jun Ki or Jo In Sung?
Would this have changed anything?
