No drama at the 2008 Seoul Drama Awards

Lame, lame, lame. I’d kind of figured that the newish Seoul Drama Awards would be bland (it’s their third year) based on the voting and nominees, so the results weren’t as disappointing as they would have been if I’d taken the Seoul Drama Festival seriously. As it was, there was a total lack of drama.

First off, the actual awards themselves were kind of… wonky. With dramas from all over the world competing (33 countries, 152 entries), the actual Korean series entered for judging (and which advanced) were hardly Korea’s best work of the past year.

Secondly, and perhaps for the above reason, there was a serious absence of stars — aside from the ones who were either presenting or receiving awards, that is. I wouldn’t call the red carpet and pre-carpet events “beyond pitiful” as one paper did, but when the only way to get actors to come to your event is to bribe them, you know you’ve still got a road ahead to being taken seriously.

I can understand awarding the online popularity award to Nam Sang-mi (adorable) and Lee Junki, above, both of the thriller drama Time and Dog and Wolf. But Golden Bride? Jungle Fish? Erm……

The ceremony was held at the KBS Hall in Yoido, Seoul, on October 14. Sageuk specialist Choi Su-jong (Dae Jo Young) and singer-actress Eugene (Three Dads, One Mom), above, presided as MCs for the event (Misuda panelists Saori and Eva acted as interpreters).

  • Golden Bride won the Excellence Award for drama series.
  • KBS’s Jungle Fish won in the youth drama category.
  • Gourmet‘s head chef Choi Bool-am won the “Star Award.”
  • In addition to its actors winning the netizen popularity vote, Time of Dog and Wolf garnered the netizen vote for favorite drama.
  • Grand prize for drama series went to China’s Hero Without a Name.

Kind of meh, right?

On to the fashions:

Lee Junki looks a little casual — no tie? open collar? — but I adore Nam Sang-mi‘s dress. I want to steal it from her and wear it to my wedding. Or someone else’s wedding. Or every day.

Kim Sung-soo (Bad Love) and Lee Tae-ran (Infamous Chil Sisters) present an award:

Kim Bum — ay, you know I love you. Why do you pain me? Did you raid the ’70s-era wardrobe of the set of East of Eden to find your outfit? Also, Jungle Fish actors Kim Soo-hyun, Park Bo-young, Kim Jung-hwan pose together:

Taiwanese actor Joe Cheng (It Started With a Kiss) was in attendance, as was Lee Wei (My Lucky Star), who’s with Yoo Hana in pink. (Cute dress, but it makes me nervous that the tissue-paper-like confection she somehow finagled into a garment is going to fly off her body with the next gust of wind.)

Byun Jung-soo’s little sis, actress-model Byun Jung-min (First Wives’ Club):

Golden Bride wins an award; star Lee Young-ah looks fresh and pretty:

Han Go-eun (Capital Scandal) — ee, way to look trashy on the red carpet. On the other hand, Song Sun-mi (White Tower) is regal in red.

Thank goodness Oh Man-seok (King and I) didn’t show up in a professor sweater and sneakers like at the last red carpet; prolific comedian Lee Han-wi (Beethoven Virus, Coffee Prince) opts to look more traditional:

ANOTHER awards show. But it's nice seeing all the celebrities together wearing pretty dresses!

Mm, you're right, the star lineup at this awards show isn't very impressive. And I didn't even know that there was a drama called "Jungle Fish".

Let's face it, there isn't a single legitimate TV awards show in Korea. Those major station awards shows held at the end of the year? They're a joke! It's more like a butt-kissing ceremony, handing out trophies to the big ratings winners and big name (and expensive) stars. I mean come on, Kim Myung Min in White Tower losing to Yong-sama?! Utter ridiculousness.

If we were to compare actresses from the same age clusters, keep your eyes on Park Bo Young instead of the vapid, pretty faces like Go Ara and Lee Yeon Hee.

"Han Go-eun (Capital Scandal) — ee, way to look trashy on the red carpet."

HGE doesn't look trashy.

is Time and Dog and Wolf actually good? the dramas they just wrapped up probably helped too right? iljumae & gourmet.

She wouldn't look as trashy if not for the shiny, pleathery looking bodice, even despite her styling. Anything that calls to mind the Pussycat Dolls goes into the trash-y bin for me.

HGE may not look as pretty as she could in perhaps another outfit, but she doesn't look trashy at all. I don't understand your definition of trashy.

It's all a matter of opinion, and that's all I'm giving. I think she looks trashy (also: not classy, not tasteful, mis-styled since you asked what I meant), and you don't.

I don't think Han Go Eun looks trashy either. Even though She's usually so much more elegant than this, I wouldn't call it "Trashy". Her outfit is aproperiate and and not revealing. Its probably the makeup that makes her look out of place. Nam Sang Mi and Lee Jun Ki are so adorable. It's nice seeing thme together again.

Ugh, I think she looks AWFUL! Hm, trashy? maybe not totally slutty but she does look pretty bad compared to the other people there.

yeah, there's something about Han Go-eun's long hair that looks trashy to me too. it's look like she got extensions but it doesn't make her hair fuller, it just looks flat and messy.

i love the top half of Nam Sang-mi's dress but i'm so over that bubble look. it would've looked better to me if it was just a full or flaired skirt.

I too can't understand why it seems that most tv station (if not all) in Korea has it's own award ceremony?? like mbc award, kbs award.... maybe to honor their own star?? I wonder how they choose the winners out of their own stars?? but anyways, am glad to see some pix of JunKi here, been a fan of him since watching him from Time Between Dog and Wolf....as for Golden Bride, yes I enjoy the show and love the main leads Lee Young Ah and Song Chang Ui but to win an Excellence Award?? it will surely get lots of raised eyebrows....

i liked golden bride...well sorta. it dragged at times and so i had to fastforward a lot but the concept was cute. prolly cuz i'm viet so i liked the whole vietnamese mix that it had.

but isn't that drama really old? why's it getting an award just now? i dunno, lolz.

I agree HGE's dress looks tacky and cheap. I am sure it's an expensive one but the style and fabric and the color is all wrong.

For someone who loved Time between dog and wolf (the romance ..not the gangsters) it's great to see LJK and NSM together. He has that panther like grace so he looks good whether he is dressed up or down and she looks fantastic. Love it when young beautiful actors are adventurous on the red carpet and give us something original, interesting, cool and fabulous instead of the usual boring dresses. They owe it to us fans. It's the red carpet after all.

Hmm. Golden Bride won an award? I enjoyed watching Golden Bride. It is actually one of the better and fun TV dramas I've seen. I'm not Vietnamese, but I found some scenes and dialogues sort of offensive to Vietnamese. The two leads are very endearing and cute. Lots of clean bed scenes. It is a very good and wholesome family show. I've not seen who this show is competing with so I don't know if the show deserves to win.

Golden Bride was such a flawed drama. Even more so, if you speak and understand vietnamese. What bothered me the most was that Lee young ah's mother.. the younger version of her spoke with one accent and the older lady spoke with a completely different accent. I can't believe a vietnamese person didn't set them straight.

Lee Junki may be casual, but he's adorable. We can all forgive him, methinks ;)

Kim Sung-soo looked *good*!

OMG Kim Bum, what happened? You know, I can't stop staring at the frilly brown shirt. It's so bad it's almost awesome, in an awesomely bad way. Heeehee

Golden Bride.... won.... what? Ok, I watched it, aside from my annoying habit of having to finish things I start, I have to say someone was smoking something to give it that award. I think after a certain point I only watched it for Hee Chul (cus Hee Chul is just funny to watch regardless) and Choi Yeo Jin just to see how messed up it got later.

I kept laughing at how crazy they made Choi Yeo Jin's character when, in my opinion, the dude she dumped had it coming (well before the beating).

It kept reminding me of that scene in Hitch when Will Smith is freaking out on the girl cheating on him and asking her what he did wrong, and the guy in the car was like, "You're doing it now." I wished someone did that to the men in that show.

I felt like the one who didn't deserve all the harsh treatment was Choi Yeo Jin's character because the reasons for her being hated on by either men make no damn sense at all. Kinda feel bad for the actor, too. If I had to act as the crazy bitch in a drama, I'd rather be the crazy bitch who's circumstances made sense.

okayy...firstly, TBDW is and will probably always be my No. 1 k-drama of all time...i love seeing Nam Sang Mi and Lee Jun Ki together...they look wonderful, as always...except I don't like Lee Jun Ki's hair, it should either be long or short, not some awkward length in between (i prefer short, as in TBDW)...Nam Sang Mi, I like her dress, but I don't think her hair accentuates it nicely enough...it also looks awkward (for lack of a better word, lol)...

Lee Young Ah looks stunning. I never realized how adorable Kim Bum really is! So glad he's gonna be in Hana Yori Dango (K)! Han Go Eun's dress is fantastic, makes her look 7 feet tall...lol...but her hair could have been better done...ditto for Joe Cheng (is he going for a Wu Chun-ish type of look?? cuz only Wu Chun can pull that off...lol...)....

The fact that Golden Bride would win over Time Between Dog and Wolf for Best Drama makes me question the sanity of the judging panel...lol....if you haven't seen TBDW, just go watch it, it'll be a very, very memorable 16 hrs...=)

@La-Nuit, actually Golden Bride isn't that old...it started airing last summer (i wanna say, June?) and finished early february/late january-ish.

oh my gosh, i want Nam Sang-Mi's dress. Right now. Really, though. Another awards show?

But yeah. Other than that, all I really have left to say is:
Joe Cheng!! <3

hmmm well nothing against GB, but i was thinking they'd be including better contenders..

question, did the winners know before hand that they have an award?
coz it explains the lack of stars i think..

i find NSM and LYA to be really pretty. loved the outfits. pretty, fresh.
oh wow joe cheng <3
but lee wei needs to shave.

'Golden Bride' should be deserved to win the Excellence Award. As what the YWCA of Korea had approved that this is a good drama. The casts have put every efforts and hard works. I love this drama cuz the story is good written.

'Time Between Dog and Wolf' is not even got nominated in this category. But it is fair that it has been awarded as a popular drama instead. As what I remembered that TBDW has not even got nominated or won in other korea awards.

Lee Young Ah looks so much prettier nowadays. She got a new talent actor award last month from Korea Broadcasting Station for the role of "Golden Bride" and " Iijimae". Song Chang Ui and she are invited to attend the Tokyo Drama Awards this month.
