Jung Il-woo makes a surprising(ly hot?) Iljimae
by javabeans
O_O
This is a PURELY SUPERFICIAL judgment, but looking at the newly released stills of Jung Il-woo dressed as Iljimae (above), I start to feel hope for MBC’s upcoming The Return of Iljimae.
If you’d asked me months ago whether Lee Junki or Jung Il-woo would have looked better as the masked bandit, I would have said, “Lee Junki, hands down,” and laughed in your face about Jung Il-woo. But then — and this is my opinion only! — one of my initial blocks against SBS’s Iljimae was that Lee Junki came off as unexpectedly silly with his Hannibal Lecter-esque metal mask and penchant for overacting.
(Don’t get me wrong, I like Lee Junki but I hated his look. In contrast, Jung Il-woo looks serious but not too hammy and, to my great surprise, actually pretty good. And doesn’t he almost look… Jae Hee-ish in that photo?)
Again, I recognize this is totally superficial based on a few still photographs, but yeah, I’m that surprised.
Maybe it’s unfair, but I’ve been keeping my expectations very low for Jung Il-woo.
I liked him in High Kick but didn’t really think he was a natural choice for a sageuk hero. Especially since he normally looks like this! (Smooth skin, slightly baby-faced, and good-looking in a feminine sort of way.)
In addition to donning Iljimae’s period costuming, Jung reportedly lost weight to sharpen his features and to look more like the part. Sometimes I think actors take the whole “weight loss for a role” bit too far (see: Lee Da-hae dropping weight for East of Eden — like she needed to lose weight to begin with — and getting hospitalized in the process). But In this case I think it really worked to his benefit and added maturity to his look.
To compare the two Iljimaes:
Lee Junki, left. Jung Il-woo, right:

I'm usually not one to notice whether a celebrity got a plastic surgery but I can definitely see that he did in the first picture. Good for him because he looks much more attractive now. The only thing is he looks a bit like Park Hyo-shin.
Anyhow.. I'm really not a fan of LJK (I do think he's a good actor), but I still think he's the perfect person to play the Iljimae character as portrayed in Go Woo-young's comic version. It's too bad the drama Iljimae he was in didn't get to adapt GWY's Iljimae because that would've been perfect.

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but am I the only one who thinks that the two Iljimaes are exactly alike? From the hair to the clothes to the angsty 'tude... I think I've had enough of the 'franchise', thanks.
Thanks for the news!

nope, i still like junki better.
the playfulness made iljimae interesting, like he was serious in one part of his life, but totally opposite in the other.
but ill have to wait until i see the drama...

*looks up at Iljimae photo* I can't believe that's the same Jung Il-woo from Unstoppable High Kick.
Sevenses: You're not alone in thinking that.

For the love of God sake, LJK is better~. This Jung looks deflated, as though he's suffering from malnutrition and makes him looks in his 30s. I think i will like LJK version because it has tension, comedy, romance and warmth all in a pack. I believe you have seen the terrific fight scene which were raw from LJK. And guys~ the LJK ver. OSTs are one of the best in all korean drama.
For LJK ver. OST: 10/10 legend

I've recently starting watching "Unstoppable High Kick" -- I needed a rather long-running drama to keep me occupied while I wait for new episodes of BBF (PLUS, Kim Bum!). BUT, thanks to "High Kick," I've developed not only an increasing obsession with Kim Bum (too cute!), but I've also developed a thing for Jung Il Woo.
So, now this drama will have to be on my list too! After I finish BBF, though...I barely have enough time for the 2 that I am watching...(but somehow, I manage).
Thanks for your wonderful coverage of all things K-Drama :)

How can this baby face become iljimae?
Lee Jun Ki looks good with his iljimae suit.
I admit that I was waiting for the return of iljimae after watching the last episode of Iljimae but not with this baby face.
Lee Jun Ki did not look like pretty girl in that drama.
heard that he chose another hero like charactor.
Can anyone tell me the name of that drama.
I will be waiting for that.

Are you saying that Jung Il Woo got plastic surgery? He didn't. He just lost some weight to sharpen his features. Right?
And my goodness, the two pictures look so different. (> <)
You've become so hot, IlWoo. Hahaha~

Re: Jung Il-Woo's Physique Transformation!!!
People, If you had trained for seven months straight on perfecting your martial arts skills explicitly for a character role, I think you'd tone up in the features department too. Why r u guys(and u knw who u r) hating on the fact that the man cleans up with a nice martial arts physique? How many of you knew that he trained with a martial arts master for 5-6 hours a day to prepare for this role?
So before you place judgment on what he looks like before or after this role. you had better know your facts first!!! And not to mention, in the drama he did after this one( My Fair Lady) he went back to nearly looking the same as before. I don't think that could be possible with plastic surgery whereas it is most definately permanent once rendered.-Jenna

Although I haven't watched either series yet, Lee Junki looks more like a playboy kiddo forced to dress up in those old, traditional(?) clothing. I don't see any emotion in his and to me he seems to be trying hard to look COOL.
Jung Il-Woo on the other hand -- look at his eyes! :O He has that quiet, warrior-y elegance in him. I'mma watch ROI after 49 Days is done!
