Adapting early Hallyu hits for the big screen
by javabeans
Following the (still lingering??) popularity of classic Hallyu drama hits Autumn Love Story (or Autumn Fairy Tale) and Winter Sonata, particularly n Japan, movie versions are in the works.
The movie rights have been bought for the dramas and an agreement was made for investment and co-production between a Korean and Japanese entertainment company at the recent Pusan International Film Festival.
As we might expect, the original stars of the dramas — Bae Yong-joon, Choi Ji-woo, Song Seung-heon, Song Hye-gyo, Won Bin — who have all gone on to big careers, will not be appearing in the films. Instead, the production intends to go the opposite way and cast new faces in the roles. Furthermore, discussions are under way concerning the film fate of Daejanggeum (Jewel in the Palace) as well.
Not to sound callous, but: Can’t we move on past these old-school kdramas? The scene has evolved so much from the day of Ye Olde Cancer Storyline and the traditional tearjerker.

"Ye Olde Cancer Storyline " !
LOL.
My first K-drama was All About Eve, and my first K-love is Jang Dong Gun.
Even though those season's dramas were the one which brought Hallyu all over the world, I never liked them.
I never finished watching Autumn's Fairy Tale, only managed to see few first epi of Winter's Sonata, but strangely I finished Summer's Scent and Spring Waltz.
But anyhow, I'm glad I found K-dramas. And after 8 years, I still like them, can't get enough of them, and wish someday I have a chance to visit Korea.
Personally I think it's not that interesting to watch the 100mins + ( or less ? ) version of Winter Sonata. And for the fans, without BYJ and CJW, would Winter Sonata still feel the same? :P

Well were're all different and I suppose that's a good thing. Summer Scent was one of the first Kdrams I saw, it really churned me up, so much so I still haven't watched the last few episodes as I felt it would end in a very sad way. I watched Autumn Sonata recently and found it very moving too. This did conclude as I had wished but only in the final episode. Overall it was beautifully written, acted and satisfying. I have not been able to find an episodic recap but I did see criticism of the actor Daniel Henney, who played Phillip. I think that was very unfair and undeserved. His character was massively complementary to moving the plot forward and he was a wonderful friend to Lee Soo-ho and Seo Eun-young. Soo-ho's other friend Lee Yi-na, is a fine example of a person who was originally sweet and kind who transitions into a malicious and spiteful character, courting vengeance when S-h's heart turns to Eun-young (first loves). Only the spineless and shifty diplomat and his evil wife are worse! I have yet to watch Endless Love but I believe it and the works in the four seasons are must view options for every Kdrama fan. They represent a safe, mostly comfortable 'other world' where I can retreat and find happiness for a time.

My first kdrama was Jewel in the Palace.
I wouldn't mind at all if they made a movie version, but I can't imagine anyone else in the role of Jang Geum other than Korea's Sweetheart Lee Young Ae who would be too old now to do the movie version.

Can't agree with you more.
Everything has its times & place. They were great then but I don't want to see another remake (drama or movie)

I agree too! You'd think they ran out of different kinds of cancers by now - leukimia (most popular), brain tumor, liver cancers, and more recently..... alzeimers (Sohn Ye-Jin from A Moment to Remember)... haha.

isn't it scary BYJ & CJW can both pick up their winter sonata roles, and get right back in again? some things never change :P ...

Can’t we move on past these old-school kdramas?---> i agree. It must be a slow time in the korean movie industry or something that they're rehashing old storylines. And part of it I guess is to rope in new fans?

I hear ya...I agree with you there Javabeans. As much as I loved those tear jerkers and cancer-ridden dramas (and I loved them), it's time for new things, let's just move on. How many versions are there? There are the drama version, and then cartoon version and now film version? And in cases like Hotelier, there's already a Japanese version.

i can't stand these dramas, they are too depressing. the funny thing i heard is they are making Winter Sonata into an animated series.

"The movie rights have been bought for the dramas and an agreement was made for investment and co-production between a Korean and Japanese entertainment company at the recent Pusan International Film Festival."
See, that's interesting, because a news item from some years back mentioned that movie-making rights to both Autumn Tale and Winter Sonata were already bought. This may be the same company.
It would be nice to see *Japanese* versions of these stories. Like have Nagasawa Masami/Erika Sawajiri/Haruka Ayase (wow, I SO miss the "kai" fight of 2007 . . . ) and Yamada Takayuki star in Autumn Tale. Or, have Takenouchi Yutaka and Takeuchi Yuko in Winter Sonata. That was the original appeal anyway to okasans (and me!), that the mood of the Seasonal Dramas resembled pastoral tearjerker dramas and movies like Beautiful Life and Love Letter.

id actually like to see jewel in the palace as a movie..
i think its be awesome..
but i hope they still cast Lee Young Ae.
but im not really that into seeing Autumn Fairytale/Autumn in my heart again..
well winter sonata im over already..
i mean like moment to remember was a good tearjerker..
i felt as if the scope was broader and i was more drawn to the story..
hmmm.. well..
but if they cast a good japanese cast..
i might think about it...
they make movies good actually..

i agree w/you on that. this trend has "been there, done that" with. but i notice that japanese ppl like to turn things into movies when a drama/anime's popular.
