Yoo Gun’s Fight Club
by javabeans
Haven’t heard about Yoo Gun in a while. The actor from dramas Hello God and Bad Couple has signed up for a new cable series Fight [맞짱], which is pegged as a “real fighter drama.”
The eight-episode series features Yoo as a hot-blooded fighter in a “fight club.” (Oh, that‘s new.) Still, it’s not really thematically related to the Chuck Palahniuk version, since this one’s less of a mindfuck and more of a… coming-of-age (for lack of a better term): “young men engage in fights and develop friendships in the course of transforming into real men.” It promises to be full of romance and emotional “human story.”
To take on this role, Yoo has been enrolled in action school to practice his moves: “This is the first time in my life I’m trying something in the action genre, so on one hand I’m nervous, but I’m really looking forward to it. To be honest, when I first got to action school I was really awkward, but I’ve been told my skills have improved a lot. I’ve watched different kinds of martial arts, and will try my best to show the details faithfully.”
The drama airs its first episode on October 24 on cable channel tvN.

Wait, Fight Club wasn't a coming of age story? Marla is my role model!!
"The eight-episode series features Yoo as a hot-blooded fighter in a “fight club.” (Oh, that’s new.)"
In fact, the recently released Rough Cut / A Movie is a Movie has been compared to Fight Club too.
"It promises to be full of romance and emotional “human story.”"
So the men beat each other up . . . then profess undying love to each other? Socrates would approve. Kidding(?) aside, this looks like a promising, edgy series. Though the male-bonding through male-pounding trope seems almost cartoonishly Korean Guy Stereotype, so I don't know if this romance thing will work at all.

Watching him in Bad Couple was like watching a broom act - a really hot broom :) I think he makes Daniel Henney look like an Oscar contender, but I find him unbelievably hot so I forgive him for his poor acting.

Bad Couple was just a Bad Drama and even though Yoo Gun's acting was wooden there, he is quite a bit better than Daniel Henney. I thought his performance in 'Hello God' was pretty good.
Well, looks like this drama is aimed at the boys (and the perverted girls :P). I guess at only 8 episodes it'll be a good diversion from the typical k-drama even if it's gonna be one of those coming-of-age types.

I thought he was good in Hello God & I hope he makes more drama series! He looks like Warren Beatty in this photo! I like him - he's one of Korea's handsome actors! Welcome back Yoo - Aja/fighting!
