Jang Jin-young begins treatment for cancer
by javabeans
Actress Jang Jin-young is only 34, but she’s just delivered the shocking news that she’s been diagnosed with a stomach cancer.
On the 25th, her management rep revealed, “When Jang Jin-young went to the hospital for a recent medical treatment, she received the diagnosis for stomach cancer. Starting on the 25th, she will begin treatment for her illness.”
The initial exam took place last week; she has admitted herself to Seoul University Hospital and has discontinued all her television and work-related activities, focusing solely on treatment and recovery. Stomach cancer happens to be the number 1 cancer among Koreans, but thankfully her case doesn’t appear to be late-stage. Further details about her condition, however, aren’t yet available, and her management has said that they make more statements as her treatment progresses.
Jang competed in the 1992 Miss Korea pageant and acted in films The Scent of Love, Over the Rainbow, and Singles, among others, before taking on her most recent role, acting opposite Song Il-kook in last year’s arms-trading action drama series Lobbyist.
Since the announcement, fans have flocked to her fansites and homepage to leave well-wishes for a speedy recovery.

That's certainly horrible to hear :(
"The function of the stomach and the wide differences in stomach cancer rates between different countries make it almost certain that the food we eat is - or was - a major factor in the cause. The likely reason that the number of cases has dropped over the last fifty years is that refrigeration of food became common and people ate less pickled, salted, smoked and cured foods. "

"This global variation is almost certainly linked to two factors that play a major role in the development of stomach cancer — infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria and diet, especially the type of diet that's high in salted, smoked and pickled foods common in areas that lack refrigeration as a means of preserving food.
Stomach cancer is more readily treated when caught early. Unfortunately, by the time stomach cancer causes symptoms, it's often at an advanced stage and may have spread beyond the stomach"
Hope JJY can fight this uphill cancer battle

I've read that kimchi both causes and fights cancer, which is really confusing.

I guess this means I should stop eating kimchi straight out of the jar, on an empty stomach. :(

Stomach cancer is really bad. If it's not found early enough (and honestly Jang Jin Young is the very epitome of "healthy beauty"), the prognosis is really bad. She's going to start chemo first, but it's likely she'll need surgery.
"I guess this means I should stop eating kimchi straight out of the jar, on an empty stomach."
Not just kimchee though. If you eat miso-based stews regularly, that's also another risk factor.

Poor Jan Jin Young. It's very scary to be told that you have cancer. I wish her a speedy recovery.
I thought kimchee was supposed to be healthy? There were some claims before, during the SARS epidemic a few years back, by some Koreans that the reason Korea was largely unaffected by SARS was because of the national diet of kimchee which gave them stronger immunity to diseases. Uh, I guess that excludes cancer....

"I thought kimchee was supposed to be healthy? "
From the wiki on kimchee.
"However, some research focused on high-sodium dietary dependence has found overconsumption of kimchi and doenjang ( hangul: 된장) to be a risk factor in gastric cancer (most likely due to nitrates and salt) while unfermented alliums and unfermented seafood were found to be protective factors.[17] One oncological study found one type of kimchi to be a protective factor against gastric cancer while two other types of such high-sodium kimchi as dongchimi (hangul: 동치미) were risk factors."
I used to think kimchee was rather vile, but I even like it now as a palate cleanser with rich food. I can't imagine how people eats the stuff straight from the container in the morning though.

OMG i hope she caught it in an early stage. given what y'all say, it sounds bad if she's had stomach pains for a while...aigoo she's a great actress we can't afford to lose:(
a balanced diet can probably accommodate all the kimchi, stewed, cured foods. for every few bites of preserved food, have 1-2 cups of fresh veg/fruits. it's about ratio i suppose. also i hear lots of actors (not just in korea obviously) eat salty foods to stave off hunger, as they need to watch their figure.

"a balanced diet can probably accommodate all the kimchi, stewed, cured foods. for every few bites of preserved food, have 1-2 cups of fresh veg/fruits."
Nah, I have to disagree there. Most banchan, especially purchased from stores, carries fairly high amount of sodium. Most Korean stews -- which are regularly eaten in winter time -- are made from fermented paste and have very, very high sodium content.
Chinese and Japanese, both who use fermented bases in many foods, also have high rates of gastric cancer as well. It's a problem with East Asian food in general, not just Korean (which is otherwise healthy diet.)
So, substitute very low-sodium versions of banchan. Make kimchee without brine. Stop using miso and other fermented bases. Avoid broiled and grilled meats.

I hope for your speedy recovery! I was watching her in Scent of Love and in this movie she was suffering from stomach cancer. I would say it's not only kimchi that may cause some of these problems in Korea but their consumption of beef may be one of the contributing factors as well. I believe that Korean food is healthy but maybe as always eat everything in moderation! Get well soon!

O.M.G.
Didn't recognise Jang Jin Young in the picture when I saw this article yesterday.
She's the same competent actress in Over The Rainbow, Singles and Blue/Green Swallow (with Kim Ju Hyuk) !!
ALL THE BEST for an uphill recovery and healthier prognosis to Ms Jang.
p/s: If stomach cancer is #1 in Korea - might the medical teams or food nutritionist experts start doing something?
Carcinogens in a heavy BBQ (charring) and beef diet might also play a contributing part.

"Carcinogens in a heavy BBQ (charring) and beef diet might also play a contributing part."
Yeah, that's possible too (though realistically, I don't think Koreans actually eat BBQ often enough to make it a significant risk) The meats are usually marinaded, which reduces the carcinogenic effect of grilling meat. However, the marinade is made with soybean oil, and it's a bigger no-no to heat any vegetable oil beyond the smoking point.
More than kimchee, I think cutting out soups and stews is the biggest thing.
