Beethoven Virus takes its opening bow
by javabeans
The production press conference for Beethoven Virus was held on September 4, featuring its three main stars: maestro Kim Myung-min, violin prodigy Lee Jia, and trumpeter Jang Geun-seok.
In keeping with its classical-music theme, the event was held at the opera house at Sungnam Art Center, and the actors posed, in character, for pictures with the drama’s “project orchestra.”
Unlike many, I wouldn’t say I’m excited about the drama, partially because I’m not a fan of anyone but Kim Myung-min, but the more I see beautiful concert-hall photos and the actors with their instruments of choice, the more my interest is piqued. I love classical music, so I hope the drama does it justice.
Beethoven Virus premieres next Wednesday, September 10; lots more photos of the event behind the cut.
Below:
Lee Jia looks cute in full-body shots, frumpy in torso shots, and dead-eyed in that headshot.
I can’t say I love Kim Myung-min‘s hair, but I’ll admit it is starting to grow on me.
And while Jang Geun-seok looks cute, I HATE what he’s wearing. I’m assuming his look was deliberate and his pant cuffs meant to be too short and his jacket supposed to be cut like a woman’s blazer. But instead of looking chic and metrosexual, it looks like he accidentally stumbled into Lee Jia’s dressing room and donned an outfit meant for her instead. Good-looking boy + bad clothes = a theme with Jang Geun-seok.

"But instead of looking chic and metrosexual, it looks like he accidentally stumbled into Lee Jia’s dressing room and donned an outfit meant for her instead." -- *LOLOLOL* I'm so glad I put my water down before I read that! I mean, really--doesn't the man have any friends?! Someone who can kindly but firmly tell him before he leaves the house, "Dude, NO."

thank you so much for sharing this news! (^~^)/ gosh.. can't wait for this drama! it's kinda like a j-drama 'nodame cantabile' - which has classical music as its theme.. but of course, the storyline for both dramas are different.
and, i love what you said about jang geun-seok "Good-looking boy + bad clothes = a theme with Jang Geun-seok." hahaha... how true after remembering a few occasion which he was badly dressed.. man.. doesn't he has a stylist?
and.. lee jia is pretty! ^^

I love classical music, so I'm looking forward to see this drama . The preview in the press con looked reallu funny also . It just remind me of "Nodame cantabile"
when they had the funny parts in in . Bravo to the PD trying to do different funny things beside the serious ones. Jang Geun Suk still looks hot, bad clothes but he is the trend setter for the youth anyway (:
You can look at the a lot of teenagers and the youth nowadays , you are wondering why they are wearing weird clothes and accessories?
Maybe because you are getting old ; just like when you were teenagers, your parents looked at you and your clothes and shook their head and wonder what were wrong with you ! That was my experience when I were a teenager (:
Maybe becasue you

It's funny that JGS has switched back to girly clothing, because a while ago he was all for the 'ajusshi look', complete with 50-something-at-the-beach and the gladiator shirt. I guess he's given up on people thinking of him as manly (instead of a pretty face)?
Ahem. Can't wait till the 11th (which is when I can actually watch the thing)!

Lee Jae Gyu dramas are what event TV is about, and all of his dramas are known for their use of music. He also recruited the same music director from his Fashion 70s drama.
"I guess he’s given up on people thinking of him as manly (instead of a pretty face)?"
JGS has never really been comfortable with being exceptional prettiness, and so the last year has seemed like a latent masculescence narrated over acting performances and MVs.
Which is a shame, I think. Jo In Sung was never like this. Lee Jung Ki and Kang Dong-won have effectively pretty with da alpha in their career. Why so serious Mr. Black Engine? :)
@javabeans,
LOL define "lazy workaholic"?!!? I like it!! :D

it's heartbreaking to see such a good-looking guy like JGS decorate his body with ugly clothes. maybe he should just pick his outfits from catalogs instead of trying to mix and match by himself.

O.o I'm actually getting pretty excited to watch this. I'm more of a comedy girl, but romantic shows also floats my boat so as long as it doesn't get to campy or melodramatic.
However, I had no intention of watching this show until I heard news and perked up my ears little by little. The classical theme and how it looks (all glamorous and with all the beautiful instruments) are really great. I do jazz (more fun personally) but classical music is incredibly beautiful and relaxing. Hopefully the soundtrack for this will rock. And staring at instruments and concert scenes are really a big bait for me...
Beethoven Virus reminded me of Nodame Cantabile, especially after this pres conference. Nothing in common, I know. Nodame is over-the-top and slapstick (but I hear it's also very slice-of-life in some parts), but it reminds me of some of the screenshots of NC. I'm on the verge with NC too, but I really dislike overly silly/over-the-top shows. But I also dislike meandering, crying, mourning romantic shows... Hopefully BV won't be that either.

all the PR for B.V. look ultra-serious...i hope it's not too serious/stuffy for its own good! they coulda taken the folksy approach, like "ramshackle crew of orchestra members losing too many engagements to a rival company from big city or abroad, & every member is going through a crisis in their respective life-stage...", but that's probably for a "You Can Do It!" type of japanese dorama. Oh well good luck guys!

javabeans,
Since your interest is piqued, I hope you will be recapping this series with your usual brand of tongue in cheek humour and sassyness.

sorry, but she looks like dawn of the dead in that photo. actually i think eja always looks a little like one of those demon girls who avenges people from the grave in japanese and korean horror movies. i expect to see her creeping up out of the well in my backyard like in 'ringu'.
don't care about this violin movie or this creepy girl.

No one can convince me as to why this girl appeared from out of nowhere in Korea (from Los Angeles) after having done nothing her whole life but attended a few semesters of fashion school and became such a hyped celebrity at the ripe old age of 27 from just one drama appearance. Her acting is "not bad" but nothing special, and her looks are certainly average. She has typical look of a Korean girl with nose and eye surgery. So why so famous and so hyped? What's her magic spell? Did she sleep with Bae Yong-joon or something? Curious minds want to know. I agree with above poster. She's a little creepy. And like Javabeans said, a little dead-eyed.

ok i loved classical music ...I am violinist ...so i kinda fear about how the actress will play a violonist without being a violonist...lots of movies/dramas portrays music plyers but they all failed in making me believe that they are musician..(i think Nodame iss the only one that make me believe that they are really musician and prodigy...well some of them).., hope this time they will make the thing good or believable...anyway have to see the drama first...:p

I have a question... is this an adaptation of Nodame Cantible or are people just comparing this drama to that manga because of the classical music theme?

Hi Ter!
I don't think Beethoven Virus is the adaption of Nodame Cantabile. We compare them against each other simply because their theme is classical music. That's all.. ^^

I dunno. Jang Guen Suk is a cutie patootey but I just can't see him as a musical prodigy. Kim Myung Min is always playing these stoic, abrasive roles so he'll do fine as the brilliant-but-socially-inept conductor (Chiaki Shinichi anyone? *winks*). I can see Lee Ji Ah pulling off playing an eccentric violinist with a penchant for porn (again, too similar to Nodame and her hentainess. lol except that I like Ueno Juri way, way, WAY better). Ji Ah has an element of mystery to her - precisely because she burst into the scene out of nowhere.
As for Korean dramas making a series about classical music? It's about time. Nodame Cantabile Live Action is a CLASSIC. I'm not that keen on Beethoven Virus, rather sceptical actually, but I might give it a watch depending on the reviews and word of mouth. Got to say though, that no one does classical music quite like the Japanese. They are PASSIONATE about their music. When I was a little tot I used to attend those piano lessons at Yamaha Music School. Ah, remembering the good old days.... =)
