Stars mourn Lee Eon

As previously reported, actor Lee Eon‘s sudden death early on the morning of August 21 has proved a shock to the entertainment community.

Celebrities came garbed in funeral blacks to pay their respects to their deceased colleague/co-star/friend at the mortuary area in the hospital where the deceased’s body is being kept until the funeral service. Yoon Eun-hye arrived in tears at Seoul’s Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, as did fellow Coffee Prince co-star Kim Jae-wook, who appears to still be stunned, reportedly sobbing as he kept his face hidden behind his hair. (Pics of the stars, and in particular Kim Jae-wook, make me feel uncomfortably voyeuristic; I admit to an interest in seeing pics, but not when they are clearly intrusive in such a raw moment.)

His co-star from drama Strongest Chil Woo, actor Yoo Ah-in, also showed up, grim-faced. If you’re wondering why certain people haven’t yet paid their respects, I’m sure they’ll be making their way to the funeral area as they learn about the accident today. I haven’t seen pics of the rest of his Chil Woo castmates, but apparently they were among the earliest to receive word. Eric received the phone call at 3am and headed directly to the hospital, along with cast and crew members, including Gu Hye-sun and PD Park Man-young.

Others who came by were former co-star Ryu Deok-hwan, and supermodel Park Dool-seon. (She is one of the main stars of modeling reality show I Am a Model, which Lee Eon was involved with; he had also reportedly dated supermodel Jang Yoon-joo, one of Park Dool-seon’s colleagues.)

His mother understandably was in a huge state of shock, and apparently still in denial; she resisted being led to the funeral room, wanting to go to a hospital room instead, as though unable to digest the truth.

Also, a report was issued contradicting early beliefs that the accident occurred on Lee Eon’s way home after the Chil Woo wrap party. A new report suggests that Lee Eon had already arrived home, then left again, after which he was in the accident. Some sources speculate that he had been on the way to the club where he had worked as a DJ. I’m sure these details will be sorted out in due time.

As to questions of his sobriety at the time of his death, police have stated that tests will be conducted to determine whether he was drunk, but will not have the results for approximately a week. Lee Eon is, however, reported to not be much of a drinker.

PD Lee Yoon-jung, who’d directed Lee Eon in Coffee Prince, also shared her words of grief, saying, “I don’t know what to say. I plan to pay my respects tonight. Lee Eon had a special passion for acting and was always a source of support for staff on the film set. He was a good person.”

The funeral service is planned for August 23. Other details as yet unconfirmed.

His poor mother...even I am in shock. His career was just taking off with Coffee Prince, Who Are You, and Strongest Chil woo. And as you've mentioned, the finale to his drama was shown just yesterday. You can't be more alive than that! And now he's gone. May he rest in peace. Too many celebs dying this past year-especially the young ones.

"(Pics of the stars, and in particular Kim Jae-wook, make me feel uncomfortably voyeuristic; I admit to an interest in seeing pics, but not when they are clearly intrusive in such a raw moment.)" <-- I agree. I feel almost guilty "watching" them in such a vulnerable state. But at the same time, perhaps it helps his fans mourn his loss.... I dunno. It still doesn't feel quite real. And having recently experienced loss in my life... the grief and pain can just be too great to bear. My heart continues to mourn his loss and my thoughts remain with his family and friends....

You do not know much about him as a person but it chokes you up anyway as you have seen him on film so there is a contention. There the shock of such a waste and the pity you feel for those left behind. It brings the old story of so many Korean drama, to live life to the full as you never know when it is going to be cut short.
“(Pics of the stars, and in particular Kim Jae-wook, make me feel uncomfortably voyeuristic; I admit to an interest in seeing pics, but not when they are clearly intrusive in such a raw moment.)”
I felt the same way when I saw the photos from Jung Da-bin funeral on-line, a feeling of shame to see open grief in what should be a private moment.

I can't even imagine how hard it must be to have the funeral the same day you hear the news. Every funeral I've been to has been at least a few days later, and it's hardly enough time to process fact into realization.

Ack. Had a lump in my throat when I read that part about Kim Jae-wook and when I saw the photos...yikes. Felt a bit bad to see photos of such a private moment. I always feel uncomfortable when I see photos of people (esp. celebrities) in mourning.

Btw, what is the Korean custom when someone passes away? Are the person's remains cremated within 24 hours, or the body is prepared for viewing? When a relative passed away last year there was a Korean family who held a wake in the room next to ours, but there was just an urn displayed for those who wanted to pay their respects. My relatives remains were prepared for viewing during the wake, then the funeral service was held a couple of days later. After reading this part in your post: "at the mortuary area in the hospital where the deceased’s body is being kept until the funeral service" I am more curious than ever.

I was stunt upon learning about this tragic news.

Just not long ago I was watching and reading your summary of Chil Woo last episode, seeing the pictures of him & his cast mates at Chil Woo wrap up party and here came this news.

There're just too many fatal moto cyle accidents involve celebs in Korea in recent years. It's so heart broken.

I'm seriously going to cry at my desk over this :(

I've always thought it was strange how available pictures of mourning celebrities are in Korea... it seems to be normal for them... some of those photos of the turtle man's funeral were incredibly invasive. I just figured Koreans feel like they are closer to their celebrities since it's a smaller country, or something.
