Ara’s Twenty-Year-Old Story

Ara celebrates being twenty with her first trip as a legal adult, taking off for Tokyo in a program for cable lifestyle channel O’live, She’s O’live: Ara’s Twenty-Year-Old Story (or, Ara’s Story of Being Twenty).

In the program, Ara visits the sights in several of Tokyo’s fashionable districts, stopping by hip spots like the pop artist Yoshitomo Nara’s café and browsing the expensive stores of Harajuku, yes, that home of the uber-trendy fashion aesthetic bastardized by Gwen Stefani. Ara has a chance to show her apparently impressive Japanese skills as well.

Throughout the trip, she tells anecdotes of her life, like this one that surfaced when dropping by a store selling Christmas items (it’s only August!): “When we found out that [SPOILER?] our parents were really Santa, my younger brother and I would pretend to be asleep while my mother set up the presents, and once we even sneaked outside to open our presents, then rewrapped them and went back to sleep.”

The program airs in two segments, the first of which ran August 30, and the second which shows on September 6.

I wouldn't say she...bastardized it. I actually like Gwen Stefani's style a lot. It's a mix of the Harajuku/Shibuya aesthetic and others... I actually think her style is Shibuya than Harajuku (edgy vibrant sexy hip-hop influenced vs edgy vibrant cute funky influenced). But it's not REALLY Harajuku. Then again, the whole style is about bringing your own flavors into it.

Japan look so fun!! Too bad I still can't afford a trip there...

Love her tweedy peaked hat! Also loving the white bag, little black skirt (shorts?) blue top, and nude shoes.......perfect! Casual and chic at the same time.

she's 20? How is that possible? We're both born in 1990 and I'm only 18. I understand that korea age is one year older than American but that still doesn't equal 20.

so she's 18/19 in korean age. she looks much older like 27ish, which is my age.

Wish there were more photos of her trip rather than mostly just her face. I wouldn't have known she was in Japan just by looking at those photos cuz they're focused more on her and not really the place she's at.

JiHwan, you are correct, but she was born in Feb. and seeing that it's Aug she is 19 by U.S. time. And wow, that sure is a nice way to spend turning legal. I just went out to movie and resturant with friends.

I think she's beautiful, but something about her teeth bothers me. It's like they're too long(?).

Both her & Lee Yeon Hee maybe should get braces. They'll be flawless.

^ Braces doesn't fix the length of your teeth. Just the position of it. I think yeonhee + ara both have nice teeth already so whats there to fix?

I AM SO SAD to read that stunning young girls like Ara and Yeon Hee are thought to need work done to be "flawless."

Jinah and JiHwan I agree with both of you, they don't need to have anything done to be "flawless."

"I actually think her style is Shibuya than Harajuku (edgy vibrant sexy hip-hop influenced vs edgy vibrant cute funky influenced). But it’s not REALLY Harajuku."

I think of the ideas could plausibly be from sweet lolita, madam lolita, and kogal. The major throwoff is the makeup and hair. Then again, if the girls went all the way with a ganguro look, I think that'll offend a lot of people. The general "very short skirt + platform shoes/industrial strength boots + accessories" template is the party dress of Tokyo in general.

"Then again, the whole style is about bringing your own flavors into it."

It's kinda quirky in that, regardless of which style you subscribe, there are definite rules that you have to observe (thus, Kera magazine.) Buying well-regarded brands is a big part of it, especially in lolita (Americans!! Quit the black french maid outfit, Mana Himself hates you!!)and kogal.

"our parents were really Santa"

Haha. Silly girl. Everybody knows Tim Allen is really Santa.

She looks amazing with the clothes and makeup so I don't get what's all the fuss about her teeth?

The lolita style is extremely expensive but I guess it suits the Kawaii style. :)

I'll LoL if anyone really follows the ganguro look, ewww...I still don't get the fad.

Lol at Belleza' s comment. Yeah we all know Tim Ellen is Santa. ^_^

korean age is different than american age
they count the age from the beginning of the year. for example if your american age was 17 in korea you're 18 but when the next year comes and it's january 1st even if it's not your birthday you become 19 years old.
american age changes when your birthday comes but in korea it's different. when the next year starts your age changes. so technically it is almost 2 year difference
