City of Glass (and mud)

SBS is gearing up its new weekend drama City of Glass, to follow the currently airing Happiness. The drama began shooting on July 14 in the city of Boryeong in south Chungcheong province, with Yoon Soyi (Auction House, Goodbye Solo) shown here in her role as the lead reporter character.

In the photos below, Yoon portrays a newbie reporter covering the Boryeong Mud Festival, who suddenly finds herself in the middle of an arrest for a murder suspect. Her character grew up in a tough family background to become a news announcer, meets her white-horse-bestridden prince and undergoes a “Cinderella”-like change in marrying her rich husband. However, she clashes with her husband’s family, divorces, and sets off to follow her dream once more. The drama also stars Lee Jin-wook (Rivals, Someday) and Kim Seung-soo (Don’t Ask About the Past, Jumong).

City of Glass, written by Choi Hyun-kyung (As Much as Heaven and Earth) and directed by Jo Nam-kook (SBS’s Hong Kong Express), premieres in September and is planned for 50 episodes.

Personally, I was bored by the description till I came upon the divorce aspect of it, which is a new twist on an otherwise overdone story. Yoon Soyi’s a little hit or miss with me — I think she was good in Goodbye Solo, but that could have just been the strong direction showing her in her best light. Too bad it’s such a long series, though, which is the biggest deterrent for me. The length is also why I never jumped aboard Happiness, which from all reports sounds like an enjoyable drama.
