Lovely lady, marketing miss
by javabeans
…as in misstep, I mean.
When you pair the words “skin” and “food” in a product’s name, there are two ways to read the juxtaposition: “food for skin” and “skin for food.” Unfortunately, one of those evokes an image I really, really don’t want in a beauty product I’m using.
Sung Yuri (Fin.K.L., Hong Gil Dong) shoots an advertisement as the model for cosmetic line SkinFood in Kyunggi-do. I don’t even like her that much but I must admit girl looks amazing.

I bought some Skin Food products when I was in Korea. They're not too bad. And I thought they were pretty cheap. But then when I actually went to their branch in Indonesia, the price is like threefold, it's freaking insane. The same goes to other Korean beauty products like Face Shop, Missha, and Laneige. I mean I'd prolly think about buying if the difference in price is still rational but threefold is just nuts.
Anyways, just wanted to rant about the stupid price difference.

What marketing misstep? I understood it! A person would have to be pretty stupid to take it as "skin for food."

^ You don't have to misunderstand what it means for it to be a bad choice. Marketing 101: don't pick a name that comes with bad connotations or sounds gross.

I don't think it sounds gross! I've never really thought about the connotation of the name because it's really no big deal! Sung Yuri has such lovely skin! I remember watching the Hong Gil Dong special and Kang Ji Hwan saying how Yuri's skin was always so soft and smooth even when they were filming in snow and harsh winds in the mountains!

The natural, soft look really fits her. She looks great! ^_^ I think they should make her less gracefully/womanly and more....innocent girl though. Her face still looks childish to me, but she's gorgeous. I didn't even recognize her at first.
Skin food.....lol. I've never used Korean products, so I wouldn't know how good the product is, but the name is rather....strange. Everyone understands it because they automatically translate the word into meaning. Everyone rejects the other meaning subconsciously, going, "Of course it's food for skin" because obviously, skin for food is absurd and wrong. but if you actually dissect the word, it does mean both. Like Veteran day is "Day for Veteran" but blueberry muffin means a "muffin made out of blueberry." And when you catch the other meaning....it never leaves.

the first time I knew about this product was couple months ago, at first I feel akward with the " skin food " name, but after a while I'm allright with it. it's been used many times say with the " dog food" or " baby food" or " pet food"
So nothing un-normal.
love Yu-ri. looking great and cute.

I agreed with deeta. Bought some products from Face Shop in Korea and found the products to be wonderful but when I get back to Malaysia, found that the price has increased termendously compare to what I have paid in Korea. Imagne paying RM26 for a piece of soap which I happen to love so much. I only pay about RM8 (after conversion) when I bought it 1st in Korea. I think Korean produce good products but once they leaves the shore of Korea, they triple 3x. Even kim chi made in korean cost 3x more in Malaysia. Geez ...

I just visited Korea last week and bought back lots of skincare goodies, including Skin Food products. They are really really cheap over there as compared to Singapore! And they are really great. Didn't get to see Sung Yuri's ad though (i guess it isn't out yet). She looks so beautiful in the pics!
Oh and i always thought Skin Food is a nice brand name. Food for the skin. Sounds good to me.
