Wandering the Han River
by javabeans
Now, this sounds like a movie I’d watch:
Jung Ryeo Won, 26, (My Name Is Kim Samsoon, What Star Did You Come From) has been cast opposite Jung Jae Young (My Son, Welcome to Dongmakgol), 37, in the upcoming film Wandering Mr. Kim.
The film has attached Kang Woo Seok, described as a “Midas touch director” (Shadows in the Palace, I Like it Hot, Hwang Jini, Sarangni) as a producer. It will be directed by Lee Hae Joon, who made a splash and won Best Director at the Blue Dragon Awards with his 2006 film Like A Virgin.
In the film, a man (Jung Jae Young) attempts suicide by throwing himself into the Han River, but instead winds up on Bamseom, a small uninhabited island in the Han River. After failing attempts to escape the island, he gradually realizes there’s hope to life as he grows accustomed to island life; the “help” he scrawls into the sand changes to “hello.”
Jung Ryeo Won plays the socially isolated woman whom he meets while on Bamseom, and while he wanders the island alone, she wanders her small room alone, using the Internet as her sole portal to the outside world in a kind of “digital xenophobia.”
The movie films later this year and plans for a release early next year, but first Jung Jae Young will be promoting his next release, Kang Chul Joong: Public Enemy 1-1 (in which he plays an unbalanced cop), which comes out on June 19. Meanwhile, this will be Jung Ryeo Won’s second movie after last year’s My Girlfriend Has Two Faces.
SONG OF THE DAY

this does sound like an interesting movie.. but jung ryeo won? i wouldn't have pictured her in this type of role.. she did a good job of playing the ex-girlfriend in KSS.. but i wasn't extremely bowled over by her acting for some reason.. maybe she was too overshadowed by kim sun ah's hilarious performance..
& is she an author as well? oh i forgot about her picture book a while back.. *sigh* she's another example of a hallyu star i can't take seriously ever since i saw her before cosmetic surgery photos.. not because i think looks are everything.. but there has to be something.. either extraordinary talent, extravagant beauty, keen intelligence.. anything..
then i would understand the furor over the likes of JRW, yun eun hye, lee da hae, song hye kyo, kim tae hee, etc. cuz just being cute alone ain't doin' it for me with these actresses.. call me a critical mofo you like o_O

Not sure what "marcel" has been smoking, but, anyway...Can you imagine a woman as uncommonly attractive as Jung Ryeo Won not favoring the world by going outside so that we could enjoy the privilage her of admiring lovely face?!! Thankfully, that is not a world that we are forced to live in.
While I much prefer most KDramas to Kmovies for several reasons, I'll be looking forward to the release of this one.
Can't get enough of my "Bokshil!"

The first thing I thought of was Thank You staring Jang Hyuk and that Sang Doo teacher. Sounds like a movie that might be a bit boring and slow. But maybe I'll check it out. We'll see :]

to each his/her own robbo4.. i am not one to be easily impressed.. or deceived for that matter.. as one girl to another, maybe i have the benefit of being able judge without the effect of testosterone influencing my brain..
it's just been dawning on me how much hallyu is crawling with surgically enhanced robots who can't act worth a bean.. kim ah joong.. need i say more? & i just remembered JRW used to be a singer or started out as one.. obviously that never panned out..
just what exactly are these people trying to do? tell great stories through drama? create beautiful, timeless music? or is it really all about the money and hype? besides the gifted writers, directors and precious few actors like jeon do-yeon.. where are all of the real artists nowadays? that's all i want to know..

Before things get ugly, I'll chime in too.
I agree that the industry's crawling with "surgically enhanced robots who can't act worth a bean." that's true of probably all entertainment-related industries, Hallyu and otherwise. while it's unfortunate that many go for looks OVER artistic talent, i don't think one precludes the other. as in, they're not mutually exclusive qualities. there are good actresses who've opted for cosmetic alterations (kang hye jung, kim jung eun), just as there are "natural" beauties who still can't act for shit (kim tae hee). and everywhere in between.
although a forgettable kpop past sometimes looks silly on a resume, i wouldn't necessarily count out actors for that. i think of it more as an early-career misstep -- hey, even "serious" actors have the odd throwaway film (or several) in their early careers. some kpop starlets DON'T have the talent to act (hyori), but some have actually surprised me.
for what it's worth, i really like jung ryeo won. she's not conventionally pretty, but she's naturally stylish and based on interviews seems like a low-key, thoughtful person.

@ jo.. i guess i should get to know more of her work before i pan her completely.. the role of cancer-stricken ex-girlfriend in MNIKSS prob isn't enough to go off of.. maybe she'll grow on me if i discover she's as amazing as everyone says she is ;)

A friend of mine made an interesting observation about Daniel Henney. Even if he spoke perfect Korean and could act reasonably well, if you put him as lead in a generic Korean romance (i.e. as a normal Korean character) the chemistry would still feel "off" because his social manners and responses would still be jarringly "American", especially if that difference was not acknowledged.
Jung Ryeo Won is actually like that too, though more subtly so. Her performances have that tight-lipped grin of self conscious self-awareness, that "oh no you didn't!! shutup!" irony which is a very Western sensibility, and conspicuously absent in Asian culture. There's sometimes a slight condescension in her chemistry with her male partners (and it's mostly a cultural affect due to her Western frankness with men especially), and to me it's very enjoyable. I just love her; she reminds me so many of the friends I had in high school. If you watch her performance in Kim Sam Soon, she actually did a beautiful job showing how, if you do grow up in two different countries, your personality and emotional tenor can radically flutter upon the mask that is worn.

I love her.
Despite the plastic, I still find her face different from most Korean actresses.
She does a great job of acting. If you've seen her in Which Planet Are You From... amazing! Thats when I decided to really like her.
Can't wait!

I'm looking forward to this film! The pictures released of a scrawny and disheveled-looking JRW amongst a pile of rubbish seems to hint that it'll be a sort of dark comedy-type of movie.
Im not really bothered by the rumors of JRW going under the knife since almost every Korean actress seem to have something tweaked at one point or another (such that its almost like the norm!) and few actually manage to look as natural and pleasant as JRW, who also captures my attention because of her incredibly unique sense of style, which ranges from bubbly cute to dainty and classy to indie chic to gothic punk. She models like a pro and seems to look great in almost anything.
I think JRW's quite a nice person in real life as well, she seems to have plenty of close friends in and out of the e-circle, comes across as humble, humorous and cheerful in interviews etc. and doesnt mind posting "real" (clownish, ghastly, stupid and silly) shots of herself without all the fancy powder and goo online. Most importantly, I find her a very decent actress whose performances (especially her tears and laughter) are a much welcomed and refreshing break from the string of hugely-exaggerated-and/or-wooden-stiff acting by the bulk of actors at current.
