A gorgeous hanbok, an uncomfortable smile
by javabeans
Love the hanbok-inspired dress, hate the clown makeup and the cultural pandering.
“Fashion designer” Nicky Hilton arrived in Korea to launch her clothing line in Korea. Well, at least Paris wasn’t with her. At Seoul’s Coex Intercontinental Hotel for a press conference, May 22, 9am.

Yikes! What is with the make-up?
I'm not quite familiar w/ traditional Korean dress; I know that the hanbok consists of the jeogori (the shirt) and the chima (the skirt)... So, in Nicky's case, is the tube-like dress the chima and the white top the jeogori? How does the hanbok work?

Ugh, the makeup is hideous. And in my opinion, Nicky has better fashion sense and sense in general to Paris (hard not too, actually...but...). I can't believe she was that far off.
I'm not familiar with the hanbok either, but I thought it was supposed to be made up of a shirt, and a skirt, put together somehow. Correct me as I'm wrong....But her "hanbok" is like a normal dress with a very strange jacket. The jacket doesn't even resemble any jeogori I've seen...
However, if you look it from the standpoint of a modern hanbok inspired thing, it's gorgeous, especially when the jacket is off, because I have a problem with the jacket coupled with that ribbon. The jacket is short, the ribbon is long and thick, and when put together, there is her chest squashed in the middle. But don't look at the middle too long, and it's actually gorgeous. I really like the silver design on the black.
I think it's fine if she wants to wear a hanbok, or hanbok inspired. It is in a way cultural pandering, and she's obviously trying to appeal to the Koreans, but even though it's the Korean traditional dress, I don't think there should be limits on clothes....But if she does...make it look good. A country's traditional dress when done incorrectly can get people VERY pissed off. I don't have a problem with the dress, but with it's jacket and partially with the ribbon, and I think it's a pretty good hanbok-inspired dress, but that clown makeup and smile kills it. It doesn't even look like she wants to be there....

The dress is amazing. Excellent modern take on the traditional hanbok. I can handle the cultural pandering too, as long as it doesn't extend to, "I love Korea soooo much after 2 days! I know the culture soooo well because I wore a hanbok and got drunk on soju!"

I envy how the Hilton sisters get to wear and probably keep those gorgeous hanboks when they visit Korea. I adored Paris in the gauzy pink hanbok (or rather I adored the hanbok ^^) and I have to admit she seemed very comfortable and quite pretty in it.
Nicky's dress is clearly a more modern take but sans the jacket and some proper jewelry, that black and white piece could hold its own on the red carpet~ I hope she liked the dress or had a better time than her facial expression says she did XD;

i've seen pictures of nicky with the same smile... i think we are not just so used to seeing it because compared to her sister, she appears to be more mysterious and not getting herself too much publicity...
while paris dreams to be the ""icon"" by being a marilyn monroe of the decade, nicky prefers to be more reserved...

Ha...ha I lol so hard at your comment because it is soo true!
She does look good other than her awkward smile but at least she didn't take the cultural love so far as Hyena said lol.
To yeoreum:
I totally agree that Paris and Nicky are quite the opposite sides when they choose their fashion. IMO, I like Nicky's more conservative fashion rather than uhm Paris's because at least Nicky looks most of the time sophisticated and classy.

I would so love to see how Paris dresses up in a hanbok.
Oh wait, I better not. It's probably not tight enough for her *LOL*

HAA - i misread the title of your post as "A gorgeous dress, an unforgettable smile" and then realized that dramabeans wouldn't write something so cheesy.
i really really love the dress. the colors are on the safe side though. as for her makeup... whatever. i've seen worse. i like her SO much better than her sister.

the hanbok-like dress is beautiful, but does look rather funny on a blonde-haired, grey-eyed woman..

Miki: Actually I have seen TONS of jeoguri's like that. I even have one....except with long ribbons on it.
I actually think the dress is a quite gorgeous twist on the handboks. i have seen alot of "modern" ones, and this one is actually really good compared to them.

Love the dress (glad she tried to appreciate the culture instead of wearing some other horrendous or slutty piece). A lot of "modernized" hanbooks I've seen are terrible and this one is actually pretty good. But I do wish she tried a more natural look for makeup...

Wow. That really surprised me when I saw Nicky Hilton on dramabeans.com. heh Because I'm so used to reading your articles on dramas, I never suspected one of the Hilton sisters to make an appearance! ha :)
As for the hanbok, it's a stunner! It can totally be a hanbok-slash-formal gown. I love it. :)

I really like the dress AND the jacket! I think the jacket and the bow make it into a Hanbok - without these it's just a formal gown. It was kind of like Sandra Oh's dress on the red carpet - it was clearly Hanbok-inspired (with the bow) but with a jacket it could of been considered a real Hanbok. IMO Hanbok = long puffy dress (no waist line) + long bow + jugori. Anything without one of the three would be considred Hanbok-inspired outfit.
