Open Thread #13

Phew, exhausted — have spent the past few days in a manic burst of early spring cleaning. I love things ordered but my natural state veers toward The Clutter (far be it for me to defy inertia and therefore science and nature and god). Amazing how much stuff we accumulate, isn’t it? I’m not a natural pack rat, but I have to remind myself it’s okay to throw things away, an impulse that reaches a high whenever I see those sad hoarder profiles on Oprah or whatnot — you know, they have a dozen half-functional toasters, a closetful of empty boxes, piles and piles of junk mail they can’t toss, all of which they rationalize as “necessary.” I used to work with a guy whose home (reportedly) was completely drowning in newspapers, stacked in such dense columns that he was essentially living in a precarious maze of floor-to-ceiling newspapers. With ten cats. Skeery.

What else is everyone up to this Friday? Week? Month?

SONG OF THE DAY

Recovering from a wicked case of acute bronchitis. On meds but still... Have managed to hack and wheeze my way through the final 2 weeks of classes (I'm the teacher) and only have 1 more day to go. Only good side to the bronchitis is that I was excused from having to proctor national entrance exams this weekend. All the hacking and wheezing is just too distracting. My colleagues are quite jealous and many have been asking me to send a few germs their way. We all extremely dislike proctoring this test - probably the most stressful yet boring thing I've ever done in my professional life. (For example, the explanation/script for 1 of the many tests is over 60 pages long - and not in English either. And one goof up and you could make the national news.) So, still not feeling the best, but not having to proctor this test has perked me up considerably! And a free weekend to boot and only 1 more day of teaching! Whoo-hoo! Things are looking up! Cough, cough, hack, hack... Now where were those meds...?

Nonbirira, that really sucks. I was sick earlier this year and I got my lung x-rayed, apparently it was infected. I felt like such a wimpy little Asian girl during the time I was sick. I think my mother was convinced I was going to die after hearing my hacking my throat away at night.

I have homework to do before school begins again. But Wong Fu videos are addictive. Has anyone seen their famous short Yellow Fever?

It's funny because your write "Wong Fu videos" and I immediately think of "TOO WONG FOO, THANK'S FOR EVERYTHING JULIE NEWMAR". and start laughing out loud - but still not as much as i did from belleza's comments on dramabeans post about BAD LOVE!
her post about BAD LOVE was:
" I haven’t seen a love this powerful since Bobby and Whitney, Flavor Flav and New York. No couple has been more sorry to love each other than these starcrossed lovers!"

... but then - I'm old!

Not too much going on, was a pretty laid-back week and now it'll be a laid-back weekend. Taking my little girl to her first Birthday Party, a friend of mine has a son that just turned 1, so she's having a little party for him :) That'll be cute, babies are always cute and First Birthday's are so special :)

I have to admit it; I'm a bit of a slob. "Cluttered" seems to be the natural state of my room. The fact that my daughter and ALL of my nephews seem to think that my room is the play area doesn't help matters. Last night, my daughter shredded a piece of Styrofoam packaging over half the room. And I have plastic tubs full of books: textbooks, literature books, etc. I've gotten very good with hiding things in plain sight. But today I'm on a cleaning kick also. I got half my room done; I'm proud of myself. :) But, once I'm done with my room, I have to deal with my closets. I have to go through my shoes; I actually have a shoe closet. I can't help that I'm a shoe addict! It's sad, I always find a reason to get a pair of shoes. Also I'm debating on whether to switch banks, this is second time in two days (!) I had to have my current bank reset my password because the stupid online program wouldn't take the current password. >.

Another victim of the messy attack! I hate the mess myself, but even more, I hate when my mom comes in and *gasps* cleans! Although everything's in a mess, shockingly enough, I know where everything is. I know where my notes for Bio are, my clothes that are dirty, even which underwear is clean! In fact, there's a specific area on my floor meant for dirty clothes as there is an area for the clean ones. I know I'm messy - but I'm too lazy to clean up - further more, I HATE when others clean up for me! God, need to break this nasty, also disgusting, habit!

I HATE CLUTTER!!!! But, I have been sick recently and I dont have the energy to clean so....I am stuck with it for now. Plus, my cousin came to visit for the holidays and he came by bus but flew home. Why did he bring every item of clothing he owns?! What kid has a duffle bag full of shoes?! So now, because of the 2 bag rule on his flight, I am stuck with 3 of his duffle bags (one with the shoes) until he comes back to visit for spring break. More clutter. I will deal....or throw them over my apartment balcony...one or the other. Hehe

Have a good weekend guys!

i spent my time coming back from vacation sorting through crap accumulated over 3.5 years of college life. At one point i wanted to just have a giant bonfire, because it was just so tiring and frustrating to pack and repack and resort! But I did manage to make myself give away some clothes, throw out old notes that i always knew i'd never look at but still kept (who else does that? come on, be honest!), and was satisfied with the result. It is really surprising how much useless stuff people accumulate.
Now i'm enjoying being graduated. Ahhh. Chilling. Being extremely lazy. Doing a lot of nothing and also many things I'd always wanted to do (like drive around and go to movies during school hours and go have lunch with non graduates and say 'HA-HA', etc. etc). catch up on dramabeans. And catch up on my kdramas. Javabeans, you will be happy to know that I finally started on Dalja's Spring and am loving the first two eps so far. Its wonderful!
:)

Clutter's my middle name. I gave up subscribing to the newspaper, as well as magazines, long ago b/c they just pile up in the recycling bin. I meant to do spring cleaning over the holidays (as in Spring of 2007, LOL! - I'm so behind cuz I'm lazy), but I also had a nasty "shmocking" cough (canyayasis's new word for shockingly mocking; kind of like a word my younger, Gen Y cousin taught me: chillaxing = chillin' & relaxing) that I'm still not completely over yet. Thank gawd for codeine!! As one gets older, you realize that you're thankful for having a small house b/c the more space you have, the more you fill it with useless crap. I guess I take after my dad - he's got stacks of newspapers under the back patio and won't let anyone get rid of them b/c HE'S gonna do it, someday....

At least, it's a three-day weekend. Yay!! I'm gonna do some chillaxing this weekend - catching up on kdramas.

I stumbled across another K-movie remake: Addicted. They're calling it Possession, and the trailer looks much more on the side of suspense/horror flick.

http://www.possessionmovie.com/

Somehow, I can't picture Lee Pace (our beloved pie-maker in Pushing Daisies) as a tattooed, creepy ex-con/obsessed stalker/Lee Byung Hun wannabe. And come on, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Lee Mi Yeon??? Puh-leeze!!! Oh, the smoking man from X-files is in it, too.

I don't even want to see how badly they BUTCHER this one.

sorry to hear you've been sick, nonbirira, merriweather, & hjk... i had some bouts with mysterious illnesses myself last year... here's to better health for all of us! as far as spring cleaning... i've probably done a half-ass job on my room so far... still need to go through old notes, organize my books & cds & whatnot... but i would secretly rather live in a state of comfortable disarray... it doesn't help that i've been glued to youtube on the weekends... i feel like the laziest girl on the planet...

#10 docmitasha. Haha. CNN entertainment is priceless. Congrats on graduating. Any plan to travel and see the world? Enjoy the free time.

#12 hjk: how's the state of your car? LOL. I loooove my P-touch labeler. It aspires me to be a better person :). But i also love my mess. It's organized chaos, BTW. Ahh, Lee Pace, i miss him. He does look very different though in that trailer. Yay, Atonement won at the Globes last weekend. I take back all that i've said about James McAvoy. I luv the guy. The movie is just lovely.

#13 marcel: Neatness is wired genetically so don't be too hard on yourself. Half-assed attempt is legitimate enough. I say as long as your modem is still up, life's good. Youtubing should be an actual medical diagnosis. It's so unhealthy good.

Is everyone ready for the hands-free cell phone rules while driving in California? Stay healthy, ladies.

@ tealeaf:
ooh, the hands-free rule. i forgot that was coming. my car has the hands-free link in the steering wheel. unfortunately, the sound quality leaves a little something to be desired when you're driving with the wind noise. so you have to jack up the volume to hear the caller and end up screaming at the caller on the other end for them to hear you. then when you switch back to your radio, you find that you have the volume dialed up to deaf-as-a-post level and whatever remaining hearing is out the window. wonder what's more distracting, driving with a cell or the inability to hear...hmmmm

Oh, CNN. and naturally CNN was too leery to make the call themselves so they had to bring in the EXPERTS to confirm that yes, he is definitely, positively either dead or alive!

newspapers are fast becoming obsolete and there's just no need for that much paper waste when you get everything faster and paper-free online. that's why i don't read the paper anymore, i tells myself, since i've got CNN.com. but then again, we've just seen how reliable they are ^ ...

Lee Pace as crazed and obsessed? Oh, BRING IT. The man will kill it, for sure. Not sure I like SMG though -- I loved Buffy but I do think she's a bit, um, limited in her range.

docmitasha, you must report back your findings on Dal Ja! you'll love it (i hope). and yes, most of my college notes were useless, although sometimes i wish i held on to my notes from a few of the more interesting classes... i do have all my college papers though. and i just found my file of every single english paper i'd written in high school. eek. on the one hand, some of the stuff was surprisingly better than i'd thought it would be, but on the other, YIKES. horrors.

oh yeah, and re: hands-free... probably a good move considering how stupid people can be. driving in california's bad enough -- i once saw a guy READING A NOVEL while driving. i can kinda understand glancing at a piece of paper or map for directions, but no, he was reading through page by page, one eye on the traffic and one eye on the hardcover book spread open on his steering wheel. granted the flow of traffic was kind of slow but it was still moving. BOOKS ON TAPE -- er, CD, mp3 -- people!

Dramabeans,

Do you have alot of Korean girlfriends that you go out and have fun with? I've learned so much Korean these last couple of years just watching dramas. My comprehension is almost 90% most of the time unless its one of those historical dramas using ancient Korean language then it drops to 60%. I got excited to learn that one of my children's classmate's mom was Korean. We volunteered together once and thought she was Chinese. My excitement soon faded as soon as I learned that she speaks zero Korean. I thought it would be cool to have a Korean girlfriend and practice my Korean more. My understanding of Korean culture is very limited. For the second time in my life, I feel like an outsider. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a middle zone. I married my best friend in graduate school and of course he was American. We have wonderful well mannered children together. The funniest thing of all is that my husband acts and thinks like a Korean man. My uncle is rather amused by this as well.
It doesn't help that there is very little Korean population where we live, but I wonder if Koreans harbor certain prejudices in general. I don't know.

i'm not coughing and don't have bronchitis (sending all of you get well wishes), but i did trip and hit the stooopid protruding leg of that chair in my room. so i've been nursing a swollen and bruised foot the past three days. hobble, hobble. (and no, i'm not a klutz, it's always something else that's to blame, kekeke...)

hjk, yes, thank god for codeine! (that was the only remedy for those hacking coughs i got during winter, that kind of cough where you feel like your intestines are going to spill out.) and ventolin too (yup, i'm asthmatic).

docmitasha, i keep college notes too but selectively (out, algebra! out, chemistry!).^^ everything related to my major i keep, not because i'm practical and think i might use it someday, but i just love my major too much. i've sold a lot of textbooks at co-op (not of my major tho'), but i regret that now.

sarah, hehe, i get the shivers too when i read some of the stuff i wrote in school. some essays are pretty okay (by my low standards), but some are just really pretentious. but having to churn out so many papers under that sort of pressure semester after semester did wonders for my writing. i'm such a lazy bum now.

on the kdrama front, i'm watching Conspiracy In The Court. one of the lead male characters is like Hong Gil Dong, son of a noble and a slave. it's really gripping storytelling and very powerful; not sure if i'll enjoy HGD as much now after watching Conspiracy. also watching Hyena which i really like; it's smart and witty and very, very funny (people below 19 aren't supposed to watch this, btw). WITH S2 is subbing Hyena. *wink*

tealeaf, I'm glad you finally got to see Atonement.
My car? Actually, it's really clean. I don't leave trash or other stuff lying around all over the floor (unlike my husband's car - I always have to maneuver around the trash on the floor whenever I step into the passenger seat - it's so annoying). The irony is that I don't like clutter. I'm just lazy. When my OCD kicks in and shoves aside my laziness, I'm actually super-perfectionistic-ally organized. I know, that sounds oxymoronic - go figure! I also have a P-touch labeler. It's still in its original packaging. LOL! I used to know where everything was, until my husband decided to organize things himself, so now I have no idea where anything is in the house anymore. I finally convinced my husband to throw out those books and papers he wrote for the two degrees that he has absolutely no use for now and never will again (since he's in a completely different field now - boy, after all these years of hearing, "but I spent so much time on those theses!"). Isn't it great spending a fortune on education (and we're still paying for it) and never using it?

@ aneh1028, I was just thinking about that the other day, when this moron was driving while talking on the phone, completely oblivious to what he was doing. I wanted to yell at him, "That's illegal now, you idiot!"

@ hellaakon, LA drivers are much better than people on my side of the state, and possibly the rest of the country, EXCEPT when it rains. That's when everyone forgets how to drive & starts acting like they're deaf AND blind. Consider yourself lucky.

thunderbolt, codeine & albuterol, baby!!! I'm not asthmatic, but the albuterol really helps with those hacking coughs - lungs, intestines, all the way down to your tailbone. haha. Conspiracy in the Court isn't being subbed yet, right? I've been meaning to start watching Hyena, but HGD, Robbers and other misc. kdramas have been keeping me busy. 3-day weekend, here I come.

@ ina, lol - didn't you marry a non-Korean (are you Korean?) to get away from Korean men? I sure did.

@tealeaf...thanks for the congrats :) I am carefully cherishing the free time and also doing certain things (like learning Korean) that I finally have time for. Travelwise, I went to Poland and England almost immediately after the semester finished, and am heading off to India in Feb for a return-home trip (after eight years)...and then potentially off to the Philippines for a year long scholarship. So its exciting and new and I'm kind of scared, because I'm not much of a traveler, but I'm hoping this will change my attitude and give me some good experiences before med school eats me up!

@javabeans and thunderbolt...yeah, I think I'll keep my major notes but only the really good ones. I realized I took notes that seemed great while the sem was going on but in retrospect were not as nice/well-written/organized...I must change my note-taking skills in med school! I do keep my english papers, and have kept them from high school too, and it is interesting to look back and sometimes cringe and at other times smile ironically at what I wrote and how I wrote! I'm always glad to keep those though.

Hands-free rule: 100% supporter. Lost a close friend of the family because of cell phone use during driving, and I keep convincing people to quite. Reading a novel while driving? Dear Lord!

Javabeans, will definitely report back on Dalja. I really like Chae Rim and Lee Min Ki so far...actually all the actors and their characters are awesome. And I love the little parody scenes and imagination sequences...such a neat quality to add to the show.

I'm similar! When I clean I make sure everything is well-ordered and proper but after "cleaning day" my living space gradually deteriorates into piles of clutter where important documents can't be found and dinner plates are eaten on top of books and spare pieces of paper ^^" ....It's sad. But when it's cleaned it really is clean! *Sigh* I love cleaning days. The sweat of hardwork paying off to reveal a room I've never seen before!

But really, I hate to discard some college papers. Outdated or poorly written, they're dear for the memories they possess. I agree, some do have to go ... if i can only find the time. sigh.

# 22 hjk: Take it easy on the codeine ... and hubby. hehehe.

#16 aneh1028: uhh, since deafness can be an irreversible handicap, i'll choose option a. LOL. Yes, speaker phone is useless. Bluetooth devices are no better. So basically, we're screwed comes this July?

wow, javabeans, that must have been a lot of work. i admire u! i should probably organize or throw some of my things away. last year, i threw away a lot of notes/papers and all the sat stuff b/c they took up too much room n had no use. i kept some important things that are valuable to me though, like certain projects. i have a paper to write, a long philosophy paper, o man, i like the class but the assignments r so hard. and i have a critique to write as well, that shouldn't be too hard. after interterm spring semester starts next week for me. i have so many things going on, meetings, classes, hw, paying bills (haha w/ my own money now, this sucks)... well, that's college life i guess. i like ur open threads b/c they're fun to read and i can relate to them. thanks!!

Oh! I am a messy person!! There are too many junks in my room that I really want to get rid, but I am a lazy person too..:P It's a shame for a girl, I know, but as an excuse, I agree that neatness is genetically attached to some people..and unfortunately I don't have it in my blood! hehe.

Indonesia's weather is bad currently, windy, and pretty scary for me who live on an apartment. The sound of the wind freaks me out! I have an earthquake trauma..So whenever I hear the wind blew, I kinda prepare to run! :P

I used to keep my college's notes and works but when I moved last year I realized that those were useless and would only made clutters in new place.. I felt bit sad, because some of the projects ( my major was Interior Design ) reminded me how I struggled, to awake 3 nights straight to finish those. Hhh, I once read on 'Feng Shui' study, junks that you keep are bringing bad 'chi'(s) for your soul!
