WITH S2 fansubbing policy
by javabeans
The admins of the fansubbing group WITH S2 asked if I could post up a notice of their recent decision to stop subtitle releases temporarily, and I thought I’d also take the chance to explain the stance a bit. It’s quite frustrating to see people who don’t understand the situation just jump to the conclusion that WITH S2 doesn’t have a good reason for their actions. Trust me, it does.
I’m a member of the group, but I’m not speaking FOR the admins, just expressing what I hope clears up possible confusion. (Read: Please don’t email me to protest/complain/rant!)
The group’s announcement:
We have warned everyone repeatedly on the issue of hardsubbing & streaming our subs.
We sincerely appreciate everyone’s efforts to spread the drama love, but we’re growing increasingly frustrated, not to mention worried, over our repeatedly ignored requests not to upload our material to Veoh, Youtube and other streaming sites.
Perhaps you guys aren’t aware of the problems facing WITH S2, but the flagrant disregard for our requests puts us in an increasingly vulnerable position as a fansubbing group. We don’t want to be shut down (which is something we are in constant threat of) and if our rules are not honored, we may well be.
Therefore we once again make this request:
Please do NOT harsub & upload any of our subtitles to streaming sites.
If people do not comply, we will be forced to stop releasing our subtitles
for ALL our current projects until the request is met, full stop.We regret that we have to take such a drastic stance, but our requests have gone ignored for the past year. There’s not much more we can do to protect ourselves and to continue bringing these dramas to fans, but we believe that taking these precautions now will keep us operational for the long run. And we hope to keep bringing these dramas to English-speaking fans for a long time. Please help us by abiding by our rules.
Here’s the issue: WITH S2 translates and subtitles dramas, and releases “softsubs.” (Softsubs are text files that sync with the video, so you play both files simultaneously. WITH S2 does not put out “hardsubs,” which are videos that come with the subtitles already embedded into the file.)
Lots of well-meaning fans then take the WITH S2 translations, “hardsub” and upload them onto streaming sites like Youtube or Veoh. THIS IS BAD. The reason is not because WITH S2 is stupid or annoying or mean. (1) It’s disrespectful to the subbers’ wishes, but more importantly, (2) Fansubbing is not legal, and with the popularity of kdramas growing, legitimate companies have licensed the dramas for DVD releases outside of Korea.
That makes fansubbers a target — although fansubbers make no money, legally the companies have all the right to shut it down. Because WITH S2 is a prominent fansubbing group, it’s at constant risk and legal threat. When you put videos on Veoh, that exposes the group and makes it a big target.
To this end, WITH S2 has politely and repeatedly asked uploaders on many streaming sites to STOP UPLOADING their files. Many people assume that the uploaders have WITH S2’s permission, but that’s not true. The uploaders have basically ignored all polite requests to stop.
Which is why WITH S2 has decided that they will put a hold on their subtitle releases until the uploaders comply. (Personally, I think the fansubbers have been way too nice so far, but the admins are truly good-hearted people who just want to do their best to bring kdramas to English-speaking fans.)
WITH S2’s second-year anniversary is approaching (January 10), and the fansubbers would all love to celebrate the occasion by resuming sub releases. If you’re an uploader, please DO NOT UPLOAD WITH S2’s SUBS to any more streaming sites.
It might be annoying to have to figure out how to watch dramas without Youtube or Veoh, but trust me, it’s really not that hard. And some fans complain, “I don’t know how to do it! It’s too hard! I need Veoh!” Well, if we fansubbers can figure out how to download dramas, translate them, time them, edit them, release them, and provide the raw video files separately — surely you can learn how to watch them. (Soompi and d-addicts have detailed instructions.) Or buy the DVDs when they’re released officially.
WITH S2 is providing a SERVICE — a free, fast, reliable service. Fansubbers would like to keep providing the service, so we hope everyone can understand why this decision has been made. WITH S2’s wish is NOT to shut down drama-sharing — it’s to keep it alive for the long run. Please help by considering the bigger picture.
Without streaming sites, drama-watching may become less convenient, that is unfortunately true. But it’s better than shutting down fansubbing entirely — ’cause then you’ll have no dramas at all.
And finally, Emily from WITH S2 would like for me to extend the group’s best holiday wishes. On behalf of WITH S2:

Quality of most Asian dramas in veoh.com are below average :) That's why a computer I-DYOT like me still download from clubbox/d-addicts.com :) If you're from Malaysia, you'd know how to get round the P2P throttling and bandwidth capping ! I have a friend who buys very good quality DVDs from mainland China and she swears that some of the English subs are plucked from d-addicts.com o_O!! I would love to stop my downloading and purchase DVDs of K-dramas but it's a cop-out in Malaysia - they happily cut a few scenes here and there, the prices are ridiculous and the quality is only so, so ! Oh, well, if I have to wait for 6 years for subs, so be it. I'll wait *___* Last, but not least, a very sincere Thank you to WITHS2 and company for the many sub-titles released by them in the past.

okay, so i’ve spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out how to watch the vids and getting the subs to come up. one solution that i’ve found to be the easiest is by using veoh. don’t get mad yet, i’m not talking about watching the hardsubbed vids. there are users that upload just the raw video. they are convenient and takes less time to download. anyways, i will write down step by step. i am computer challenged so i understand the importance of getting the instructions as simple as possible.
1. download the (raw) video from one of the veoh users using the veoh player. (i will use the drama bad love as my example since that’s what i used to figure it out)
2. d/l the subtitle file (ends in .srt) from soompi. (my example, bad love episode 1: http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/download.php?id=25215eos) make sure u remember which folder u place the subs under. i just put it onto my desktop.
3. once the d/l on video and subs (.srt file) are done i went to the video, right clicked on it, and picked the option ‘find on my pc’. ur veoh folder will pop open and it will show the video there. (my example here, showed the video as BadLoveEp.01.flv). i renamed the folder to .avi for my GOM player (u can d/l this player for free, just google GOM player)
4. i located the subtitle file on my desktop. (the file that ends in .srt) dragged it into the veoh folder.
5. rename the .srt file so it has the same name as the video. (my example here: video name was BadLoveEp.01.avi, i renamed the .srt file as BadLoveEp.01.srt)
6. double click on the video and it should play with subs.
Can I ask a question to LiLy, post nr 101. Can you explain to me more about step 3&5. Be kind.... as I spent an hour and cant figure it out.
I must admit if I can you the way you do... it save me a lot of time!!!
Thank you.

Wow! WITH-S2's subs for Four Gods were FABULOUS! They were FAR better than any of the subs on any of the Official KBS or YAE releases, and I know what I'm talking about, because I purchased nearly all of them. How the commercial subbers can get away with random punctuation and totally crappy English is beyond me!!

Why don't people just stop debating whether or not this is right/wrong and just follow what the subbers say? If you watch their subs, you AT LEAST owe that much to them.
(I feel like smacking some people but I'll try to refrain...sheesh.)

I totally agree with the stance WITHS2 is taking. They have been doing such a marvelous job and it'd be a great shame and loss if they have to be dismissed over a matter than can be precluded if only viewers respect their work as much as they enjoyed the subtitles.
I do some encoding, editing and timing myself so I absolutely understand how much effort is required to release these subtitles. I sincerely hope everyone would learn to appreciate WITHS2 fully and not cause them any more grief.
For the love of k-dramas, lets co-operate and comply with WITHS2's policies to keep fansubbing alive.
Dramabeans - love your blog. Cheers.

i was in the same boat as anonymous (#206). i'd tried to follow lily's step-by-step instructions (#101), but no luck. until i downloaded the gom player (duh!). all my other players give me error messages. but gom works.
so follow lily's instructions, and you'll be able to watch veoh raws with withS2 soft subs. :D yay. i don't mind the low quality of the videos unless i'm actually subbing.
withS2, thank you for the robbers and hong gil dong releases. congrats on your 2nd year anniversary.

I think Lyptika does her own subbing at times, though it's been a while since I watched any of her veoh channels.

to Lily (post#101), Hi, I followed your advice to download raw videos at veoh and then download .SRT file at soompi and it works for me, but I used VLC player to combine the raw videos and .srt files. Thank you lily for the step by step procedure and to the subbing team (With S2) for the .SRT file. By the way Happy 2nd anniversary With S2 team, good luck and more power to all of you.

#211, i've never had that error message come up before. maybe something is wrong with that file or it really is not on your computer. have you tried doing the steps with the another video file? i'd try that. or even redownload the file.
i'm sorry i'm not much help. hopefully other people have the same problem and have more suggestions.

Let me tell you, WithS2 Rules!!!! I've been dl'ing kdramas since before WithS2 was around. I don't know how they do it, but these guys are fast AND they do quality job fansubbing, not to mention the number of projects they take on. I'm utterly greatful to them and all fansubbers (... O_o ... tears up... so please be sure to stick around, ok?)...
So to those uploaders, you're really shooting yourself in your foot/cutting off your nose to spite your face/biting the hand that feeds you/etc (you pick) when you do so.
Kindly support WithS2 and all other fansubbing teams by complying with their requests not to upload their work.
Happy 2nd Anniversary, WithS2!!! Love you guys!

Hi, first time posting here..I am a big fan of k-dramas and I admit I was one of those who watch most of the dramas on the mentioned streaming video sites, but now that I read the article I completely understand the reasons for not allowing these sites to host the dramas using your subs.
I am trying now to teach myself to watch the dramas using GOM player. But I am having one problem I hope someone will be able to help. I followed Lily's tips(thanks alot) I d/l insoon is pretty from veoh and I d/l the softsubs from soompi, I simply clicked on the link and this box appeared with options of find, save or close. I chose save and then I just saved on my desktop and just followed the rest of the instructions. but the video started to play without the subs. Plz someone help me, any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!!

there is no argument for if its bad to put videos on hosting websites or not, that is irrelevant, what is relevant is what an authors requests are for his/her work. If withS2 do not want their work published on an online site, they have every right to request it off (but of course there are always and always will be people who refuse to comply). (I personally wonder if they can put a copyright on their work and just sue everyone who does otherwise but I am not good in law). But if people want to translate something and post the work, they just have to cite the source (they obviously arent getting paid so thats out), therefore if withS2 cited where they translated from aka the drama or script writer it should be legal as far as i know. Although i am VERY VERY disappointed that we won't be able to watch dramas for a while i do understand. Its sortof like taking a very very long english paper(s) and letting someone else publish it against my will... oh I would raise hell and i guess thats whats going on now.
thanks for the episodes so far though withS2 Im pretty content if you decide to quit :)
Note to any crazy licenser's watching: I only read the subs to get the storyline and did not download any episodes :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D....
anyway by hardsubbing onto veoh or youtube wouldnt that be the uploaders responsibility because they altered copyrighted material? not the subbers risk? i have no idea!

As long as the hardsubs/stream gives credit to the subbers/websites or w/e source. What is there to complain about. I think some ppl are over-reacting now.

Step number 3 (more detailed):
1. On veoh tv, there are four tabs at the top (CHANNELS/SEARCH/INTERACT/LIBRARY), click on the library tab.
2. Now, the videos that u have d/l should be shown. If not all are shown, there is a tab labelled VIEW, choose ALL.
3. All ur videos should show up. Go to the video u want, right click on it (when u right click on the video, the video will have a blue highlight around it).
4. Go to the second last option (FIND ON MY PC) that pops up on the menu when u right click on the video.
5. Now, ur veoh folder should pop up automatically. U will find ur video there.
6. Rename ur video to .avi --> (u do this by right clicking on the video and choosing RENAME. the computer will ask u if u are sure about doing this because it could ruin the folder. Just click ok. the file will be fine.
Step #5 (more detailed):
Just a quick reminder: At this point, ur .avi file (the video) and the .srt should be in the same folder.
1. right click on ur .srt file, and choose the option RENAME on the menu that pops up. when u do this, u can rename the file to anything u want. just make sure it is the same name as the .avi file (the video)
so back to my original example: i d/l Bad Love Episode 1. the .avi file (the video) already had the file name of BadLoveEp.01.avi so i renamed the .srt file to BadLoveEp.01.srt
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make sure the .avi file and the .srt file have the exact same name. example again:
(video) BadLoveEp.01.avi (subtitles) BadLoveEp.o1.srt
Post #216 Farah,
Did u put the softsubs into the same folder as the video? Or did u rename the softsubs to have the same file name as the video?
I'm really glad a lot of ppl are trying to stick to WithS2's wishes. I know it seems confusing at first but once u work out the kinks for one video, the rest is just a breeze.

I just checked the mysoju's site and they uploaded a few new Bad love episodes again with WITH S2s subs! I left them a message that they have to stop using WITH S2 subs, but i bet they will ignore my message! How rude that they still are doing this!! #%$#^%$

I have also seen the mysoju website!!! I just can't imagine that someone could be that thick skinned. I left a message on the veoh account of the unloader, but whether this will have an effect, I really doubt it. I am a great fan of WITHS2 and fully support them in their decision, even though I really don't understand much without their great (really high quality!!!) subs. But what to do, when there are people who don't care.

@211
I had the same problem!! I couldn't never find the folder with my downloaded videos from veoh unless i opened it the veoh-player.
And Once I did a great mistake and removed them to another folder and when I went to the Veoh-Player on "Find on my PC" i always got an error message!
Don't try to find them on your Pc without Veoh-player (with the click of "Find on my PC") because you will never be able to find it. I think It is a hidden folder.
Just start it from the beginning!
1st deinstall the gom player and Veoh-player. then
2nd install them again and this time DON'T REMOVE them to an another folder just let them be there.
and 3rd and the last advice is just make a new folder on your deskop and put there only your subtitles NEVER REALLY NEVER remove your subtitles to the hidden Veoh folder where your videos are downloaded!!
So I hope I coul help you If you have the same problem as I had!!

i wonder if this is related to the writers strike :D but if you think about it (for the sake of the other side of the argument since i support withs2) there are american sitcoms and dramas being uploaded to online sites as well, not to mention quicksilverscreen.com and other such sites but nothing has happened yet to them. but youtube does take down some stuff though i guess

ill just say this im not going to be a hypocrite and say ill do one thing and do another. I love WITHS2 and them subbing the shows and i honestly know what they are talking about and how it can really hurt them. I do download the raws and subs if i cant find them. But if i find a show i really want to watch uploaded and ready to preview im honestly not going to give it a second thought. when the say chill with the releasing subs i can wait cuz i know how much hard work it is. but its like this my life will go on without drama and im a true die hard fan(for awhile(5 mon.) i know ill be cryin about now being able to understand) but i know i cant spend my life watching this..im a teen im going to college and i know i wont have time for this. i spent 16 yrs without it i think i can live a lil longer without it too. This is just my opinion dont quote or comment me on anything Im just saying what i feel. And "lyptika" has token her page down so you guys can stop with the pointing of fingers.

I personally don't use streaming videos and don't watch all that many kdramas. I DO respect fansubber wishes though and if I was one of those uploaders, I would stop simply out of respect. However.. games, tv shows, and just about everything you can think of as been uploaded to streaming sites. Most companies don't seem to care enough to track and find these people that do it. Also, Anime and manga fansubbing has been going on for ages with little consequence.
