WITH S2 fansubbing policy
by javabeans
The admins of the fansubbing group WITH S2 asked if I could post up a notice of their recent decision to stop subtitle releases temporarily, and I thought I’d also take the chance to explain the stance a bit. It’s quite frustrating to see people who don’t understand the situation just jump to the conclusion that WITH S2 doesn’t have a good reason for their actions. Trust me, it does.
I’m a member of the group, but I’m not speaking FOR the admins, just expressing what I hope clears up possible confusion. (Read: Please don’t email me to protest/complain/rant!)
The group’s announcement:
We have warned everyone repeatedly on the issue of hardsubbing & streaming our subs.
We sincerely appreciate everyone’s efforts to spread the drama love, but we’re growing increasingly frustrated, not to mention worried, over our repeatedly ignored requests not to upload our material to Veoh, Youtube and other streaming sites.
Perhaps you guys aren’t aware of the problems facing WITH S2, but the flagrant disregard for our requests puts us in an increasingly vulnerable position as a fansubbing group. We don’t want to be shut down (which is something we are in constant threat of) and if our rules are not honored, we may well be.
Therefore we once again make this request:
Please do NOT harsub & upload any of our subtitles to streaming sites.
If people do not comply, we will be forced to stop releasing our subtitles
for ALL our current projects until the request is met, full stop.We regret that we have to take such a drastic stance, but our requests have gone ignored for the past year. There’s not much more we can do to protect ourselves and to continue bringing these dramas to fans, but we believe that taking these precautions now will keep us operational for the long run. And we hope to keep bringing these dramas to English-speaking fans for a long time. Please help us by abiding by our rules.
Here’s the issue: WITH S2 translates and subtitles dramas, and releases “softsubs.” (Softsubs are text files that sync with the video, so you play both files simultaneously. WITH S2 does not put out “hardsubs,” which are videos that come with the subtitles already embedded into the file.)
Lots of well-meaning fans then take the WITH S2 translations, “hardsub” and upload them onto streaming sites like Youtube or Veoh. THIS IS BAD. The reason is not because WITH S2 is stupid or annoying or mean. (1) It’s disrespectful to the subbers’ wishes, but more importantly, (2) Fansubbing is not legal, and with the popularity of kdramas growing, legitimate companies have licensed the dramas for DVD releases outside of Korea.
That makes fansubbers a target — although fansubbers make no money, legally the companies have all the right to shut it down. Because WITH S2 is a prominent fansubbing group, it’s at constant risk and legal threat. When you put videos on Veoh, that exposes the group and makes it a big target.
To this end, WITH S2 has politely and repeatedly asked uploaders on many streaming sites to STOP UPLOADING their files. Many people assume that the uploaders have WITH S2’s permission, but that’s not true. The uploaders have basically ignored all polite requests to stop.
Which is why WITH S2 has decided that they will put a hold on their subtitle releases until the uploaders comply. (Personally, I think the fansubbers have been way too nice so far, but the admins are truly good-hearted people who just want to do their best to bring kdramas to English-speaking fans.)
WITH S2’s second-year anniversary is approaching (January 10), and the fansubbers would all love to celebrate the occasion by resuming sub releases. If you’re an uploader, please DO NOT UPLOAD WITH S2’s SUBS to any more streaming sites.
It might be annoying to have to figure out how to watch dramas without Youtube or Veoh, but trust me, it’s really not that hard. And some fans complain, “I don’t know how to do it! It’s too hard! I need Veoh!” Well, if we fansubbers can figure out how to download dramas, translate them, time them, edit them, release them, and provide the raw video files separately — surely you can learn how to watch them. (Soompi and d-addicts have detailed instructions.) Or buy the DVDs when they’re released officially.
WITH S2 is providing a SERVICE — a free, fast, reliable service. Fansubbers would like to keep providing the service, so we hope everyone can understand why this decision has been made. WITH S2’s wish is NOT to shut down drama-sharing — it’s to keep it alive for the long run. Please help by considering the bigger picture.
Without streaming sites, drama-watching may become less convenient, that is unfortunately true. But it’s better than shutting down fansubbing entirely — ’cause then you’ll have no dramas at all.
And finally, Emily from WITH S2 would like for me to extend the group’s best holiday wishes. On behalf of WITH S2:

I TOTALLY SUPPORT With S2 on this! I personally find that it is not hard to download from CB and the SRT and watch it at my own time. I started with Veoh at first and found that it is easier for to link the softsub with the raw myself than to be under the mercy of the uploaders!!!!! Frankly, I think Markie and Lyptika should stop what they are doing and all those who are watching from their sites praised them like they are Gods! Come on people! Wake up! Who is doing all the work? It is the subbers! Not the uploaders! How hard is it for them to combine the files and upload to the streaming sites???? These people that are "worshipping" Markie's and Lyptika's work ought to be wake up by people who knows the truth! I think With S2 should not release anything till these 2 people at least remove all the episodes from their sites!

I admit I watch these series on Veoh and Youtube before, and still do when I'm lazy or on a computer not mine. But since Withs2 have had this policy, I know longer watch THEIR series on these places, and I think that downloading raws then softsubs through d-addicts is more convenient. You don't need to really pay attention to it once the download is set up, and need to only watch it once it's finished. No waiting time, and all you need is Bittorrent and VLC media player or Media Player Classic. And if you don't know how to, there are directions all over the web, including D-addicts. It's ridiculous for people to find that SO hard!
I agree completely with this. I personally am not involved in the fansubbing world, but am involved in the scanlations (of manga) world, and I can understand the frustration of people when they complain they can't learn how to "upload", "download", and tell us that we should do this or that to make their lives easier. Really, how hard it is to download a software to unzip a file? We're doing it out of love of the manga, and yet some of them keep on pushing an pushing. We have a similar problem with distribution. They don't comply to our rule to stop distribution of manga once it's been licensed, (we stop the projects, but files are still out there.)
It's frustrating, and I know these people are actually good people, but you get tired of it. We haven't taken such a dramatic stance yet, but it seems that doing this have become quite common with scanlators and fansubbers alike.

Minny, you would download the files from places like clubbox or torrents. Sometimes people are nice enough to provide uploads on filesharing sites on megaupload. The best place to go for Korean dramas would soompi forums. Just download the raw, usually if unlabelled, the file is a raw one. So say WITH S2 is syncing subs to the Ental version, you'd download the Ental version. For all WITH S2 releases, we'll have the file in our clubbox. Our clubbox is clubbox.co.kr/WITHS2CB . You will need to use internet explorer for clubbox. There are some very good cb tutorials out there, just try googling it.
When you've got the avi file and srt file downloaded, make sure they're in the same folder and named the same (so if the file name was qwerty.avi, you'd name the srt qwerty.srt). Open up the file with a video player like GOM Player that can display subtitles and you're done.
You guys, there are plenty of tutorials out there on drama watching so google is your friend. =D

I think you guys should do whatever is best for the group. I love With S2's subs and they are always very good quality and fast...the best fan subbing group out there in my opinion!
I understand With S2 side and i think that they are doing what they believe is best for them and us. Because we all dont want With S2 to shut down..
I will learn how to use soft subs instead of watching dramas online like others do and i will try to discourage uploading of With S2's subs on sites like youtube or Veoh.
I hope people understand, and if they dont thats their problem, i dont think it can be that complicated. Everyone says its easy.
I dont understand how some people can be so disrespectful and upload when they are told not to. Just like a lot of these guys i used to think Lyptika was a member of With S2 and was alowed to upload their videos, but i did not know she wasnt, so i am surprised.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, i've been to busy lately to watch K-Dramas and so i will help spread the word of stopping these people.

Thanks merriwether for answering my question, Ill just watch the music videos because truth be told I like watching my K-Dramas on a bigger screen, better for my eyes. I hope WITH S2 doesn't get shut down just because of some people who refuse to get it. Come on guys you know how disappointing it is to watch K-dramas with bad subtitles, it will drive you stark raving mad!!!!

I have created a pretty basic tutorial that will run through the process of download and watching dramas if anyone would like to have a look here: http://merriwether.wordpress.com/2007/12/25/korean-drama-watching-guide/ . Please read this before asking any questions. If anyone has any further questions, feel free to ask on my blog.

Ofcourse subbing takes time. It's true to, people need to learn how to work with watching and downloading videos and subs on their own time. I've never had a problem with it. Either i spend time downloading and working with unfamilular programs or i buy the drama when it comes out.
It's quite simple. I doubt not watching the next episode to something is going kill someone... well people shouldn't think that it's the end of the world... it's quite a bad habbit.

Now that i'm better informed, i went on d-addict, google, and yahoo to learn more on softsubs... so i think i got it, not too complicated...and i also noticed that lyptika over on veoh deleted her page.. its such a shame that she went and edited the softsubs to include herself in the credits... kinda disappointed that she was that sneaky, but whats done is done... and the most important thing is that i now know how to get my softsubs to work!!! yeah me!! :P

I just went to check on some of the streaming sites and found out a lot more of these hard-subbers.
These hard-subbers are so thick-skinned and so shameless that they even removed WithS2's warnings about no hard-subbings or streaming in the soft-subs and even took credit for themselves. These people should be teach a hard lesson and learn to respect people. Subbers are not selfish and we have our reasons for setting up rules. Fan-subbers will die out completely because of these people's stupid acts.
So instead of thinking when the next subs will come, why don't we think of stopping the hard-subbers first before they bring 'death' to all fan-subs.

I don't think that the people uploading are trying to be shameless or mean or anything. They do credit the subbers and they probably didn't understand the reasons. They just know that some people can't download all these files to watch their fave dramas. But I completely understand why the WITH S2 guys have decided to stop releasing subs, it's unfair to them because they are doing everyone a GREAT service by subbing all these dramas. (I know I depend on them). Thanks for the update Javabeans. I hope the uploaders listen and WITH S2 will be up and running again soon.

Personally, I think it's so much more easier on my hard drive and myself to watch softsubs. Often times, the quality on Veoh and YouTube is terrible and I really REALLY prefer to have a high-quality video and a small sized .srt file to go with it. =/
But yes, it's hard to tame the internet community. It's always one (wo)man for her/himself.

well, I´m glad that withS2 don´t want to retire from subbing forever.. I´ll be waiting patiently for ur comeback and yeah.. my prob wasn´t that I couldn´t download the raw file, sub and then putting them altogether to watch.. but is just that my pc has been messing up lately and when I watch then the sound and picture don´t come at the same time.. with other words, but pc is old and can´t take it any longer... well, I´ll just have to buy another one and watch the dramas I guess..^^ now when uploading is stricyly banned.
BUT A MILLION OF THANKS FOR SUBBING ALL THESE AWESOME DRAMAS AND YOU GUYS ARE KINDA THE BEST FANSUBBING GROUP I KNOW OF..(COS OF THE DRAMACHOICE^^)

WARGH!!! I DIDNT KNOW... yup i'll look up more info on WITH S2...
wow, i guess with the popularity of kdramas and movies growing.. dis subbing issue is growing out of control... in the end it'll effect the benefits for the distributors huh... the money makes it matter in the end i guess....
well, i've only downloaded and not uploaded...but is it wrong of me to keep the dramas ive downloaded? i like to keep collections(burn it into dvds)..so that i can watch again.. my frens(just my normal few of gfs) sumtimes borrow my cd to watch...is it equivalent to not supporting WITH's cause?
is it?...feeeling guilty but ive spend my hols downloading them (now my semester break is over so i gotta go back to college and yea room got no internet)..so kinda torn between deleting them and not..

diana - for videos you can download torrent files (d-addicts) or use clubbox (WITHS2 clubbox or other users, pls search on soompi for other clubbox users). Softsubs are also available on d-addicts :D
Glad to hear lyptika has shut down her veoh account. I just wonder if there are other people like lyptika, or should we watch out for lyptika part 2? What if lyptika just makes another account using a different name? I guess more people will be on the lookout now that they are aware of WITHS2's policy.

I think most of us support WITH S2's decision of temporarily stopping subtitles releases. Why can't users read the instructions explicitly stated by the group? I have been enjoying K-dramas (and J-dramas) via d-addicts. For RAW files, I will download the soft-subs graciously provided by WITH S2 via d-addicts as well. How hard is that (and I consider myself not that computer savvy)? If you don't understand how to do it, then ask and read up! If you can understand the nuances and plots of the K-dramas you are watching, why can't you understand the simple instructions given? Ignorance is not an excuse. It boils down to plain laziness and ingratitude on the user's part. WITH S2 has been too kind, generous and nice to us. As a result, we take this service for granted. I really want to thank WITH S2 for all the time and effort spent on doing the 'donkey job' of releasing good quality subs. I really appreciate the good work and am in FULL SUPPORT of the current decision. For those who are hardsubbing and streaming the subs, I hope that you respect and comply with the group's request immediately. Please think of the English-speaking K-drama fan community who want to continue watching great K-dramas for a long time.

Merry Christmas everyone!
Because I got hooked on kdramas I took the time (and it was less than 1/2 hour) to learn how to get my account at clubbox, install the software, and start downloading. I did all that without knowing any Korean, just did Google searches and followed the wonderful and easy instructions people already had on the Internet. I also took the time (less than 1/2 hour) to learn and install utorrent to download from d-addicts.
It takes me less than 2 hours usually to download an episode from With S2's clubbox, and since I monitor the torrents I upload at d-addicts I know it can take some people less than 2 hours to download an episode from d-addicts. But even if it takes 8 hours to download, it probably takes way more time than that for With S2's team to sub that episode. They do this for free, so can't you hardsub watchers respect their wishes and take the extra time and effort to watch softsubs?
Thank you, thank you, thank you With S2 for subbing Golden Bride (currently my favorite kdrama), and all the other kdrama's I've downloaded from your clubbox!

Merry Christmas to everyone!
The news that WITHS2 has temporarily stopped subbing actually is a relief to me. It means we still have the chance and perhaps in the future they will continue subbing. I got interested into Korean dramas in 2003 with Attic Cats. I didn't know then but later it would become an impact on my life. After watching a few dramas I started to watch Korean movies. They are now my keen interest even though I still enjoy the dramas and I wouldn't be able to enjoy anything if it wasn't subbed. Whenever I see a new drama that is about to come out I always check and see if WITHS2 will be subbing it and they usually are. I'm not sure if WITHS2 will be subbing dramas forever but I'm happy they are doing it now. Korean movies and dramas are perhaps the only things I have to look forward to everyday. The only thing that really nags at me now is that I have never thanked them properly. I have at least tried almost every drama they have subbed. Thanks WITHS2!! Fighting!

I feel sad that it has come to this, but I feel that WITH S2 have made the correct decision. I really love their work, some of my favorite shows have been subbed by them, such as Coffee Prince, Golden Bride, Legend, Dal Ja's Spring, Full House and Gong. Yes, I too started watching KDramas on VEOH, but after discovering how easy it is to use torrents, and then clubboxes (which I now use exclusively) I don't think that I'll ever go back to VEOH.
What about sites like http://www.mysoju.com/ ? Many of the shows that they are streaming are from WITH S2 subs. There just seem to be so many sites like this out there..... :(
I hope that all of this streaming stops, and that we can continue to watch the KDramas that we know and love.

HI ALL.. FIRST, DRAMABEANS -- i REALLY REALLY LOVE YOUR WEBSITE... :)
Anyway, all this talk of not being able to watch kdramas online with english subs is saddening.... I'm a fairly new fan of kdramas (started watching just this year) and I really have no idea that it's a bad thing to watch it on streaming sites --> I have watched from dal jas spring from mysoju.. I kinda feel guilty now for watching it from there which means I'm supporting their website and causing problems for the one who's originally doing the hard work... So now that I understand WITH S2's point, I promise to learn all those things about clubbox, torrents or whatever.. :) Can someone recommend a site that has the easiest to comprehend instructions (I am soooo not a techie person, that's why I usually just buy the DVDs)....
Dramabeans, thanks for putting up this website... :)

Okay, firstly, how hard it is to download from MU or other direct download sites? It takes me like 20 minutes to an Hr to download one episode. I just go to IU (idols unlimited forums) or Soompi and get all my dramas.
Torrents is so easy too. It takes like a few steps. First, download a torrent program. Then, go to a drama torrent site such as D-addicts. Pick a drama you want and the torrent program does everything. If no one is seeding, whine until someone does. I say it takes like a few seconds and a few steps.
Why do people want to watch from Youtube and Veoh, the quality is horrendous.
I don't get it. It's not hard and it doesn't take that long if you have a good internet connection.
People need to get a job and buy a better internet connection. I'm pathetically poor and I still pay high prices for a good internet connection. I say, it's more filling than food.

Pretty easy to download even from torrents. For those who are lazy to use torrent, find yourself a seedbox clan (a clan that have a server dedicated for downloading/seeding torrents). After downloading the file, you can download it directly from the server with any download managers and that would make your life easier.

I would like to say that I am also one of those who learnt to torrent and use Clubbox from scratch, and there are so many great people out there who have posted instructions and are even available for us to talk to if we run into problems. I have never been a supporter of streaming sites and much prefer torrenting and clubboxing for my dramafiles. WithS2 has been a major major source of my drama subs, and I appreciate SO MUCH the great job you guys do in bringing kdrama to us nonkorean speaking fans. And I have to say, despite the availability of commercial versions, I still prefer fansubbed versions, because their quality is WAY BETTER. Fansubbers do it out of love for the drama and actors, and you can tell from the effort they make in their subtitles as opposed to those commercial subs made by God knows who, but obviously ppl who are just in it for the money and have no pride in doing a good job. And I'm not saying that's true for everyone but at least I can say in a vast majority of the work that I've come across.

@ diana in response to #75...
This is just my personal opinion, but I think that if you were to burn them just for your own enjoyment, and not redistribute them or sell them or re-upload and stream them on the web, I don't see that there should be any problem. I think the main problem here is that WITH S2 doesn't want a lot of public attention being brought to the group and hardsubbing and streaming the vids does just that.
I haven't burned any TV dramas, but I have burned Kmovies onto DVDs for my own personal enjoyment and to invite friends over to watch it on the TV.
Maybe someone else has a different opinion, but that's mine :) HTH

i think burning them for your OWN is not a problem.. as long as you do not distribute ... them in any way..
but you have to be careful in lending to somebody else... maje sure they will not post or stream it online..
BOTTOMLINE IN THIS ISSUE:
we should all be thankful for fan subbing teams like WITH S2, for their service is free and they don't expect anything in return ....
subbing requires a whole lot of time and is no joke at all..
the least we could do is to respect , support and obey their rules...
"we" as non korean fans should do the check ourselves and make sure ABSOLUTELY NO ENG SUBBED UPLOADS.. from this moment on... if we want to continue watching and enjoying the korean dramas we have learned to love.

diana, I found this through google

You just have to search the right terms, it's not that difficult. Let's not be so lazy people or just don't bother watching dramas at all.

Thanks for telling us. Well, actually I'm already aware of this.. I do have a Veoh account, but I upload RAW HQ episodes only. ^^;; Hmm, now lyptika's account is closed, but I know on Veoh, fhavictym and Vivagirl upload WITHS2 subs. And on MySoju.com they have A LOT of WITHS2 subs. I want to help stop them, but I don't really don't know how. Do I just ask them to stop then? =\

As an Idiot speaking, I love to watch K -drama but I don't know much about computer and especially about softwares. I did learn how to down load from d-addicts.com but beause of my brain is very little so ... I have to watch those drama on Veoh/youtube... so am I commit a crime for something call copyright?
I really like WITHS2, and I totally understand their hard work, however I'm also thanks to those uploaders out there too. So please you guys don't have to point out those uploaders to make WITHS2 see your support. I bet those smart uploaders would know what they need to do. Oh well, for you who want to support WITHS2 just use paypal to show to supportive side.

okay, so i've spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out how to watch the vids and getting the subs to come up. one solution that i've found to be the easiest is by using veoh. don't get mad yet, i'm not talking about watching the hardsubbed vids. there are users that upload just the raw video. they are convenient and takes less time to download. anyways, i will write down step by step. i am computer challenged so i understand the importance of getting the instructions as simple as possible.
1. download the (raw) video from one of the veoh users using the veoh player. (i will use the drama bad love as my example since that's what i used to figure it out)
2. d/l the subtitle file (ends in .srt) from soompi. (my example, bad love episode 1: http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/download.php?id=25215eos) make sure u remember which folder u place the subs under. i just put it onto my desktop.
3. once the d/l on video and subs (.srt file) are done i went to the video, right clicked on it, and picked the option 'find on my pc'. ur veoh folder will pop open and it will show the video there. (my example here, showed the video as BadLoveEp.01.flv). i renamed the folder to .avi for my GOM player (u can d/l this player for free, just google GOM player)
4. i located the subtitle file on my desktop. (the file that ends in .srt) dragged it into the veoh folder.
5. rename the .srt file so it has the same name as the video. (my example here: video name was BadLoveEp.01.avi, i renamed the .srt file as BadLoveEp.01.srt)
6. double click on the video and it should play with subs.
Thanks WithS2 for all the hard work. It's greatly appreciated.
And honestly, I am the most computer challenged idiot on this planet so if i can figure out a way to see vids with subs without making the subbing group unhappy so can everyone else. Happy New Years!!!
