Open Thread #8

Thanks to everyone who took my blog reader survey! By far the most interesting factoid: this blog readership is a whopping 95% female. Whoaaa. (Either that or guys reaaaally don’t like taking surveys.) I kinda figured the readership was female-skewed but I had no idea the tilt was that extreme. Rock on, ladies.
And you’re (we’re?) young! 90% of readers are under 34. Whoaaa. I’m starting to feel like Keanu Reeves here.
If you’re curious to see how the data shakes out, the results are now public.
Anyway, what’s up? I’ve been swamped with work lately and haven’t been getting much sleep. What’s weird is, I can pull an almost-nighter or get four hours of sleep and feel great the next day — but the day after I’m a total wreck. I barely slept in college and generally felt great, but now that the body’s aging I find that EVERYTHING catches up to you. You know that thing you used to do habitually with no repercussions that was supposed to be unhealthy but never affected you and you thought you were totally invincible? And you were all, “Yeah I know OTHER people shouldn’t do it, but I think I’m immune”???
IT CATCHES UP TO YOU.
I know that’s probably obvious to the average adult, but like I said, y’all are young. You’re probably all like, what’s a typewriter? What are these cassette tape thingies I keep reading about in books? What’s the Brady Bunch? Anyway, let me be the one to warn you: It’s like while your brain undergoes the whole quarterlife-ing awfulness, your body starts to fall apart. Nobody is safe. No, not even you, binge-fast-food-eater-with-amazing-metabolism guy. Or you, I-can-run-ten-miles- without-training-properly- because-I’m-just-naturally-athletic girl. Or me, (former) proud insomniac.

I haven't took your survey, because some of the questions are American related..
But, I am curious about your line above, You're (we're) young? I wonder how old are you? ( Oh, you don't need to answer this, I just write down my mind..:P )
I believe most of your readers are female, like I believe most of drama addicts are female.
And about aging body, yes..yes! Now I started felt old ( not that I am old..am under 30 btw ), but I don't have as much as stamina like when I was in college's days. I was on design faculty which means lots of assignment and less of sleeps, and I was doing just fine on those days. Now when I don't reach certain hours of 'beauty' sleep, I'll get aching body in the next morning. HUH.
Emm, Javabeans, what kind of field you're working?

I have to respond on this open thread because I feel old too. Well. Yes. Also under 30 but the not sleeping and having it wreck havoc the day after totally applies to me. Sigh. Just like djes, in my uni days, I could pull all-nighters on consecutive nights. Now, today I stay up, the next day, I reach home, by 9pm, I'll be nodding off. With the TV on, of course.
And survey results look interesting. I did it like halfway until I got tired of the questions because though I spend a lot of time online, I don't do THAT much online. What's the eventual sample size?

If it makes you feel any better, I suffer some of the same symptoms of sleep deprivation as a senior in high school. The day after about 3 hours of sleep is so energetic. But after that, I crash -- no focus, no strength. Bleh... but then again this is about year 4 of a giant sleep deficit. Or perhaps it's just me.
Edit -- And I'm with nok on the TV aspect. If it's dark out, I absolutely cannot watch TV for more than an hour and a half without falling asleep... even for Top Model.

I took the survey and wow! are the results interesting. I found the religious demographic especially cool.
Oh about catching up...I totally screwed up my metabolism in high school. I was taking too many classes so I never ate correctly for three years (microwave food-yeck...but I didn't have time to eat other stuff nor wait for my Mom to cook). And oh am I paying it for now...lol I've gained like 25 pounds since freshman year of high school. Think about it...I was 15 then and now I'm 20! (must excercise soon...)
by the way, what does blogs per RSS mean? (Or whatever it was that was on the survey?)

I just wanted to drop a line congratulating you on being able to maintain a relatively diverse readership (ethnicity, religion, etc), as among other assumptions, I would have figured that the "Asians" would have overwhelmed the survey.
I guess that shows how ignorant I am about exactly who and how much the contents of your blog can capture the interests of the greater audience.
Thanks for revealing the final results of the survey, and I hope that we all learn how to adjust to our aging bodies before we fall ill and miss out on the holiday fun.

Whew, Friday.
Go, us! After viewing the results I feel I've bonded with you guys here at Dramabeans. I, like some of you guys believe in UFO's, enjoy a good comedy but rarely see movies in a theater, constantly blog, email, won't be able to afford a car for another 10 years, love to drink red wine, and am under 34 but over 25. So thank you for sharing the results and for everyone who took the survey, I now feel more connected to all you fellow dramabeanies. *hug*

just had to jump in on the aging issue. i never pulled all-nighters in college (because i just loved sleep too much) but ever since i became a drama addict, i have had several all-nighters. And work the next day. I'm the same way as you, javabeans. I'm a wreck the second day. Like zombie, I-don't-know-what-i'm-talking-about, wreck. haha. i'm under 25, but i've never been the active sort. So yeah. :P

I either want to pass out after dinner or just sleep through all my classes...if my body is like this while I'm [pretty] young ~ I don't know what will happen when I get older -__-;;

I'm in college right now, and I've pretty much screwed up my sleeping schedule since high school. But I've never thought about the repercussions in the future till now, so now I'm getting a little worried. I should take better care of my body...
I'm not surprised that the majority of the readers here are female. And Asian. But the survey results ARE interesting.
Sigh. Since this is an open thread, I guess I can talk about whatever. You know, there's been a lot of shootings going on recently, and it never really affected me until it almost happened at the high school I graduated from. Apparently, yesterday school officials found out from a student that there was a group of students who were planning a shooting. They planned to do it during the spirit rally, which is supposed to happen today, since during the rally all the students are in the gym, and they were going to lock the gym doors and then shoot the students in the gym. But the plan was found out, and police came onto the campus, and they even found a loaded gun, though I'm not sure where. It worries me because my sister currently attends that school, and my brother is going to enroll next year. Why do young people shoot other innocent youngsters for practically no reason?? It's really disturbing.

Javabeans, your survey questions are unique. The results made me laugh in a good way. I'm an all-nighter myself and had experienced back pains. I'm only under 20 and I think that's not good. Wait, let me re-phrase that, It's really not good. It's a combination of bad posture and a cry that my body needs to do some exercise. Aigoo. And yes #12 Linda, finals "really" sucks. Please let me get an A.

"No, not even you, binge-fast-food-eater-with-amazing-metabolism guy." --> i thought we've established the fact that we're ALL ladies here? ;) OK just one other male from Hong Kong I take it... :D
I used to be very good at typewriting, then I saw the wonder of electric typewriter. Woaaah, I used to say huh I can type faster with this now! Because I was so used to using a typewriter, on my early computer days, I used to hit the keyboard so hard, everyone in the lab used to look at me funny. I couldn't help it. I typed fast and hard. Then I slowly learn how to type softer.
I wonder if a "book" will ever be a "thing that used to be there but now long forgotten" a few years from now?
I agree with djes that your survey is too Americanised. Some of the questions aren't related whatsoever to me.
Just want to give a report on my beauty sleep: the whole of last week I've been sleeping from 9pm to 7am. I went to bed with the babies and get up when they wake up. Sweet! Now I feel detoxicated, rehydrated and refreshed.

Thanks again to everyone who took the survey! The reason it probably felt too Americanized was because it was set up by a company with the primary purpose of being a tool for advertisers. So even though some of the questions were a bit odd to me, I suppose a potential advertiser could look at the patterns of media consumption, or car preferences, or age range, etc. on a particular blog to decide which ones to patronize. This blog, for instance, has GOT to be the jackpot for anyone wanting to reach a young Asian female audience. (Man, why does that phrase seem skeezy? Damn those porn/massage/dating-fetish sites.) That's got to be a sought-after demographic, right?

gah!
i've been waiting for you to do another open thread so I can tell you about the drama "Thank You".
You blogged about it awhile ago and you were afraid that it was going to be a tear-jerker because of the whole child/AIDS issue.
However, I have come to you to tell you that the drama is not all about the AIDS!
It's wonderful and very nicely put together.
It has a theme of healing like "Flowers for My Life" had a theme of death.
The acting is pretty up to par, especially the grandfather whose character has dementia (he's so funny!).
Anyways, just a head's up, "Thank You" is a drama worth watching, especially the ending. Like I said before, it's not all about the AIDS! It's about healing and the drama really makes you smile rather than cry.

I'm one of those that sleep for 2 hours then get up to go to work and by 9pm the next day feel like a mack truck just ran over me. I'm in the over 25 under 30 crowd here and I can tell you I can't do the same things I could do 5 years ago. (huummmm... it could be because of the weight I've gained.) Plus, it doesn't help me that I've sat for the las t6-8 months watching anime and drama and gained like 20-30 pounds since I stopped exercising. All right exercise! HERE I COME!! Er, I am older than most of ye then ... *feels real sad & may need to seek comfort in glass of red wine & blog about it later ...*
And talk about body falling apart. I work with my body all day (OK, that sounds bad but it's not skeezy like that) and am usually a wreck when I get home. If I even go out to party, it takes me almost 2 weeks to recover! And yeah I was good with the ole typewriter & when the electric ones came along took me a couple of days to even get used to it! And I remember when PC screens where monochrome ... green screens, eyes hurt.
And yeah, I realised why the survey was so Americanised as I reckon most of the advertising opportunities would come from there for you. So I dutifully answered even if some of the Qs made my eyebrows go up & me want to answer rather evilly on some of them.
But I refrained ... gonna go reward myself with a glass of vino & watch a movie after I finish reading.

Had to laugh - the "It catches up with you!" theme is just too true! Just wait until your body physically starts shifting about and it has nothing to do with lack of exercise or a weight problem! It's just the joy of aging. That's when you look in the mirror and think, whoa - when did my mother drop by?!
Oh, and I remember trying to adjust to using an electric typewriter after learning on a manual! And pre-handheld hair-dryer days! And the excitement when the first portable electronic calculators came out... Yep, I'm one of the 10% over 34! (Okay, waaay over 34!) But despite the morphing body, much happier than I was when I was in my 20s! Aging isn't all bad!

LOL. Love the motherly concerns here. But unlike some, i choose to ignore reality this month. Ignorance is bliss, i tell ya. As long as the bikini season is half a year away and i can get dress in the dark (without a three-way mirror), i'm cool with this unflattering body. Just let me make it through the holiday season eating spree and i'll swear that the monthly-renewed gym membership will be used again. BTW, i want to know who among your readers know what a beta VHS tape is. Dude, am I revealing my age here? hehe
OK, the nerd in me is fascinated with this survey results (well, maybe not as psyched as that Gramps guy about statistics, but pretty close). I find it's interesting that many of the readers are in the mid-20's to early-30's. Granted that we're not winos (we party by some other means, ladies?), we're definitely loyal to our Japanese cars. Kudos to that 5% male readers who are not turned off by the female bonding and fangirling on this site. Actually, i think that they're the smart ones. Where else do you have FREE unrestricted access into the minds of intelligent, college-bound/educated, free thinking blog-devoted, successful career-oriented women who also admitted to flossing regularly? If i'm a guy, i would probably remain a devoted lurker at this blog for life.

lol.."whoa-when did my mother drop by?"
I'm with you. I'm approaching the big 4-0. The young'uns have no idea what slow metabolism really means. Use to be that you can fit into that tight little dress by forgoing food for one day...now? Forget it...just go buy a bigger dress.
Wait until you wake up one day and you can't zip up in your fave pair of jeans anymore...AND you know you have not put on any weight. There's more...gravity starts higher than that. No matter how supportive your bra is, it's just not supportive enough. I have to resort to sport bras nowadays. AND, wth is going on with my hair? It use to be a nice ponytail, now it's a wimpy pigtail. Plus, I think someone is putting white paint in my food cause it's showing up in my hair roots. Tell me it isn't so!
But, you know what? I wouldn't go back to being in my 20's for anything. There's a sense wellbeing that comes with being in your 30's.
BTW javabeans, my hubby visits your blog. He likes your music selections. Only problem is that he doesn't always check the lyrics. Imagine our surprise when we heard our little 8 yr old singing "I'm not drunk, Officer, I just wanna go home". lol.

I bought the Gilmore Girls season 2 dvd today and I forgot to get the dvd case unlocked so I went home with it locked. Seeing me trying to pry it open, my six year old sister asked me if I had stolen the dvd. I was offended at first but I can see the humour of it now, kids sure are funny.

Yeah, this insomniac is still suffering from a late night - four nights ago. I guess it's true, you can never catch up on sleep. Body tells Brain, "Don't do it. You KNOW you're gonna pay for it later." Brain ignores warning again, mumbling, "kdramas are worth it." Body later laughs triumphantly, "You fool! Let's see which part of you breaks down next." And here I am at 1:30am commenting on your blog... ;-P Go figure! At least, the weekend has finally arrived.
@Nonbirira "That’s when you look in the mirror and think, whoa - when did my mother drop by?!" LOL!!! Yeah, for someone who's spent her entire life hearing, "You look nothing like your mom" - recently looking at a picture of the two of us together is shockingly scary.
@tealeaf - I gave up on bikinis and moved on to whatever-will-hide-the-most looonng ago. Betas were the best...uh, until they became obsolete. *Still sighs over the copy of Young Catherine taped on beta. Oh, will it ever be released on DVD?*
katwoman, I hear ya. But what's worse is knowing that you've put on weight, and those jeans you just bought last year (because the old one's didn't fit anymore) aren't going to fit you anymore this year, but you still tuck them in the bottom of your drawer with the bleak hope that maybe you'll fit into them again someday (like, in another life). And what about hanging onto those favorite dresses that you know you will NEVER fit into again, but they just seem too precious to give to Goodwill? Denial is such a powerful thing. I've still got a few more years until the big 4-0, but if I've deteriorated this much from my 20's to 30's, what's it going to be like in the next decade? I guess I should be just satisfied with my sense of well-being, and wisdom and maturity and... ;)
Does anyone else find it funny when someone raves over a new song, and you're thinking "Look here, young'un. How much talent does that singer really need to sing a REMAKE?" Or even, a remake of a remake?

21-34 is a weird demographic grouping, to me, since I find I want and do different things (and take different things for granted, mostly) now versus when I was finishing college. (Yeah, I'm right up at the upper edge of that range.) I read the same genres and play the same kinds of computer games, but now I actually buy them instead of borrowing--so I look at marketing differently, too. Grad school is good for teaching you to ignore stuff you can't afford. :P Anyway, interesting survey---

I took the survey, it was really long. i only took it because i was bored, had nothing to do, and thought it'll use up my free time during passing time inbetween classes. Yes I am a bit young, but still adult. I read your blog for random facts. Many people my age tell me that i sound intelligent when i talk, but i tell them truthfully..."I only sound smart, but i'm not smart at all."
I find interesting information on blogs about other cultures other than my own and the american one. :) people actually enjoy listening to my stories about what i learn from your blogs Dramabeans. 95%, 90%, well don't I feel out of place now, not that I'll stop watching dramas. Working at a University, I usually fell younger than I am, and since it's Ivy sometimes I feel Asian. The demographic here is nothing like the real world.
I've got a Beta player sitting under my desk right now, anybody want it?
