Excuse the squealing nine-year-old girl; blame anime
by javabeans
Oh man, oh man, oh man.
Excuse me for a second while I ramble on about totally irrelevant (to kdrama) things for a second.
My heart just stopped for a second reading that apparently a major Hollywood-ified Robotech film is in the works with the possible intent of being transformed into a live-action franchise. Holy crap!
Words cannot express the extent of my infatuation with the animated series when I was in grade school. I’m not really into anime, and I was only ever a fan of it for a few years in elementary and junior high school — but those are pretty formative years, so I’ll always have a fond spot in my heart for it. And for ROBOTECH (and its Japanese originator, the MACROSS franchise), which was the first anything that I was ever a fan of. Sure, I casually liked Transformers and Voltron (really just ’cause of the pretty pink-wearing blonde princess, before I was old enough to learn those things are eeevil! and damaging!)…
But Robotech…
(Robotech Theme) SONG OF THE DAY
Robotech Main Theme. I’m pretty sure none of the songs in this post will appeal to you if you’ve never been a fan of the Macross/Robotech franchise, but if you were… Ah, the nostalgia.

… let’s just say that it’s probably a good thing I was so young when I was in the throes of my infatuation, and also that I was not the one in charge of my money back then. We had everything — the (ridiculously expensive) video tapes, the posters, art books, even trading cards… A few years ago, I was in a music store and saw that the series had been released in a DVD box set, and bought it on a whim. I haven’t actually ever watched the DVDs (I know well enough that the series doesn’t really hold up well over time — the lingering childhood affection is really what keeps it watchable), but it’s there, proudly on my shelf.
Japanese Macross feature film theme song, “Do You Remember Love?”

If it weren’t for Robotech, I probably wouldn’t have gotten into anime at all, even if the interest was ultimately fleeting. Back before I knew any Japanese, I remember watching various unsubtitled episodes of the original Japanese anime and being horribly frustrated. (Which is why I’m so amazed that people are actually willing to watch Korean dramas raw — that’s commitment.)
It also briefly made me want to be a soldier, cuz seriously, defending your planet from invading aliens has never seemed so cool.
Japanese Macross TV series, “My Boyfriend Is a Pilot” (watashi no kare wa pilot)

Although… they’re casting Tobey Maguire?? Seriously? I cannot begin to imagine him as reckless, charming daredevil Rick Hunter (aka Ichijo Hikaru). (Although — HEY! — he would make a fantastic Max Sterling, bashful wunderkind pilot extraordinaire. Oh please, Tobey Maguire, for the love of Zentraedi, play Max instead of Rick.) If you could have a crush on a cartoon character, boy did I ever have one on Rick. I think I might have wanted to name my kids Rick and Lisa at one point. (HEY, DON’T JUDGE. I WAS NINE.)
I also really hated Minmei for being flighty and was firmly on Lisa’s side, even if she was overly serious and, in Rick’s words, “an old sourpuss.” Funny enough, however, if I watched the series now, I think I’d have the opposite reaction and cut Minmei a lot more slack. (It was like hating the popular girl for being popular even if you envied her. And YES, I was aware these were cartoon characters, even back then.)
Robotech: Rick Hunter’s Theme
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
I wonder what they’ll do about Minmei. A lot of the other characters won’t be too hard to cast, in my opinion, but Minmei’s a really tough one, plus her Chinese background is a big part of her identity. Hollywood better not screw this one up. Bringing such an old and forgotten series back to the limelight means you really have to make sure not to alienate your hardcore old-school fanbase — it may seem pretty quiet right now, but it’s not gone, just dormant. The second you make a misstep, beware the fanboys. And girls.
Robotech: Minmei’s war cry song, “We Will Win” — see what I mean about these songs not appealing to non-fans of the show? They’re not good songs. But they’re awesomely bad in that retro ’80s way.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
(Robotech: The Third Generation, aka Invid Invasion)
I almost prefer Lancer’s version of Minmei’s “We Will Win” from the “third generation” segment of the series (even if the “first generation” Macross segment is my favorite, story-wise):
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
…but, if we’re going on favorite Lancer songs, it’s got to be “The Way to Love,” also from the Third Generation. (Random trivia: Did you know the guy who voiced Max Sterling and Lancer also voiced one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? And one of the voices in Akira? I told you I was a Robotech freak.)
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Don’t those songs just make you cringe? The various spinoff Macross series probably hold up a lot better on rewatch (especially in dubbing and music), but the original is always going to be my favorite. Although this song from the spinoff OVA series Macross Plus is pretty nice:

Okay - I can't stand Anime - I hated it with a vengence - I even mocked the Comic Con crowd this year for it's Anime.
HOWEVER, I love reading your blog. Even when it's on an subject that I'm not even close to being fond of - I still love reading it for the amusement that ensues as you describe (sometimes in vivid detail and sarcasm) the good and bad of a show.

ok, so i reallly cannot relate. i had my own era of voltron, daimos and transformers, but you seem pretty hard core on this robotech stuff! and just likeQuestions 987, i may not be a huge anime fan but your writing certainly had me going. kinda makes me wonder if my childhood would've much been more colorful with robotech and it's probably-bad-ass-in-its-time soundtrack... hmmmm...

hehe, yakatoo, that's okay, that just means you're the normal one. Aside from having been head-over-heels for Robotech, I have a really pointless ability to remember random trivial details about the most useless things, which is why some of this stuff is so vivid in my memory. Oh yeah, and the hundreds of hours spent with the material probably contributed.
To very briefly try to explain Robotech's appeal (at least in MY opinion), for people like me who grew up in American culture with no exposure to anime, it came at a time where the only cartoons I knew were really for young children, sanitized and Disneyfied within an inch of their lives. So Robotech was fresh -- not only was it aesthetically interesting, it was full of action and romance and bright colors, and I didn't feel my intelligence was insulted. No moralistic preachy Smurfs or "Well now you know, and knowing is half the battle!" epilogues. It was mature storytelling hidden in kiddie packaging, and it made us viewers feel smart and appreciated.
Plus, the story's actually really good. Usually American adaptations fall flat of the originals, but curiously, the guy who adapted three (separate, unrelated) Japanese anime series into one cohesive Robotech saga did an excellent job reimagining the world and the conflict. (In fact, I even prefer Robotech to its Japanese source material.) Voltron and Transformers were fun but the concept was kept small and simple: Good guys, bad guys; heroes save the day. Robotech has a really complex, well-thought-out story, laid out on an epic scale, and even if its execution is really dated now, I still think the story is really well done and holds up exceptionally well.

*squeal* i can relate... if only a little bit. robotech, in some form, was aired in the Philippines in the 90s. i followed it only because i was a rick-lisa shipper. even as a youngster, i have liked romantic comedies. i don't even remember much of the plot!
i quote javabeans: "I have a really pointless ability to remember random trivial details about the most useless things." hehehe, me too. it's not an ability as great as ken jennings' but sometimes, they do come in handy. :)

Oh my gosh, I remember RoboTech!!! Nostalgia!!
I remember me and my brother waking up at 6:45 am and watching RoboTech peacefully before we went off to school. It was the only time we didn't bricker about who had the remote. I clearly don't remember their names, but I clearly remember how peaceful and endearing watching ROBOTECH was to me.
My favorite scene was when the two lead characters got trapped underground. And then there was the love relationship between an alien and a human. I vaguely remember stuff, but I love it.
If anyone knows where I can get it, I kinda wanna watch it again. It brings back such fond memories. :)

Actually the reason for the possible casting of Tobey Maguire is that his production company along with Warner Bros. have purchased the rights together for Robotech. From what I read he's actually still considering the role so its not a given yet that he would play the lead. We've got to keep our fingers crossed that the movie does get made. I think the success of Transformers makes this more of a possibility--- not like in years past where projects where anime/cartoons/comics movies always wound up being shelved (or were so low budget that they weren't worth seeing). I think Robotech would be interesting but I'm actually more of a Voltron fan myself (the lions not the cars).
I'll try to keep an open mind about it.
I've also read that they are considering doing a Dragonball Z live action...now that I'm not sure about :p

Yes, the trapped-underground (or rather, in the hull of the ship) scenes! Haha. It was so innocent compared to what we'd get these days. And the alien-human love story, awww. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the alien girl was pretty hot.
The silver lining is that although Tobey Maguire is "eyeing the lead role" which would have to be Rick, he may not end up taking it on. I sincerely hope he considers the story (it seems he knows a bit about it, so maybe he's a fan personally) and opts for a different role (like Max?) or stays behind the scenes as a producer.

Hello!!
MACROSS! Gosh brings back childhood memories, looks like Tobey is starring it, (I just saw the update an hour ago) and will produce it as well.
Loved the scene ho are they going to do it, the one when Rick and Lin minmae was trapped in one of the hulls with zero gravity, and she had that glow in the dark or maybe a light up dress, I was thrilled to see that over and over again, also when Rick and lisa got back to earth only to find out that they were the only ones in there because it was totally destroyed.
I just wonder who is going to play minmae and Lisa?
And yes just like you lynda, it was one of those anime that my brother and I totally kept quiet and watched intently without changing channels.

The theme song truly brings back memories. I remeber how cool I was with my friends when I bought this die-cast model of the Valkyrie which Rick Hunter drove complete with the hard to find battle armor, ooohh. I had to glue back on the antenna though when my stuhead cousin accidentally stepped on it. Toys then were built using heavy materials like alloys which was cool unlike plastic toys today. So you better not swallow those Japanese toys made in the eighties or else your dead. Anyway FYI I was rooting for minmei than Lisa "Nancy Drew" Hayes. Did you know that Rick and Lisa actually got married later on. Yeah I was quite the mega geek back then. Anyway I think rick hunter should be played by an american actor like either Adrian Grenier who plays Vincent Chase in Entourage or Ashton kutcher, and minmei be played by non other than Eun-Hye hahaha. Or better yet a really really cute kPOP girl.

I remember watching this when I was a just a little girl in the late 80's to early 90's. Me and my brothers were such fanatics over the anime that my second brother bought every graphic novel that he could find on Robotech be it technical or fiction while my eldest brother has bought all the Robotech series novels, the ones where Rick, Lisa and the gang went to the Zentradi home world and met the Invids. I think my youngest brother bought the Robotech manga while he was studying in Japan. I myself bought a DVD set of the anime series. We were one Robotech-crazy siblings then and still is now.
I also do not like Min-mei. Not because she was a popular girl or anything but because she was such a weakling, always needed rescuing especially by Rick. It's a good thing that the Zentraedi has never heard a singing voice before or else she wouldn't be as popular as she is.
Although I love watching Rick sparring up with Lisa, my favorite couple of the anime is actually Max and Miriya. They were so loving together and I think Miriya is awesome as the regal Zentradi warrior turned spunky Robotech pilot. Why did I say regal?! Well, she did have an air abt herself when she was a Zentradi, the pride that honour is everything. That's the only reason why she was willing to be downsized, to infiltrate the Robotech ship just so she could kill Max which comes to another reason why they are my favorite couple. I always like the storyline of hate turning to love. I'm a believer in love conquers all.
Btw, would I sound too weird if I say I had a crush on Rick back then?

ady, i just admitted as much, so you're not alone. For an anime character, Rick looks pretty dreamy to preteen girls. Ah, I also have all the Robotech novels! I've still got them around somewhere. I actually wonder if they're better than the TV series itself, because whereas the anime has shown signs of age, the books still hold up. Max & Miriya were also definitely my favorite couple -- they were just so cute and functional. "Showdown" was awesome, with their little arcade-game battle and then her inability to finish him off, in the game or in person. Aww. It's always endearing to see the socially awkward nerd who doesn't know how to talk to girls actually succeed with one, precisely because she's NOT a normal girl. Lucky for him, she's a really hot alien. Sure, she Micronized and infiltrated human society for the sole reason of killing him, but she eventually got over it.

but you know....they did have a macross film out in Hollywood. It was called, Stealth...but it was based more on Macross Plus than anything. The storyline and even the ship design.
But if they do make a film for Robotech, they better cast someone really cool to play Max Sterling......and someone really hot in playing Miriya.

26 ROBOTECH4EVER!
February 6, 2008 at 4:30 PM
Being only a teenager, I absolutely had no idea about this sci-fi anime, ROBOTECH. I've just been recently a reader of Dramabeans/Javabeans.... (Not exactly, since two months ago....) Anyways, I have been browsing animes and Robotech caught my attention. However, it was oh so briefly because I foolishly convinced myself, "This is such an old one. Besides, what's up with the songs?" (Like you said, non-fans will not appreciate the soundtrack). Then, I saw this article and told myself, "Wow, she portayed this in such a way that I have to catch more of this one-of-a-kind show!" Like you, I am more particularly interested in The Macross Saga, and being the love-sick teen I am, I can't help but drool over Rick Hunter and wish with all my heart that someone like him exists in this world. (But I still have LOTS of years to come, you never know if I find someone like him! Hehehe....) I still haven't watched the real thing, (Do you know where I can watch it for free? I still need to earn the money to but the complete box set... But I just know it's worth it.) but I have read many episode guides, and talked to many fellow fans. I do think that Lisa is overly-serious, but I was (and still am) on her side every single time. I just didn't like Minmei and her selfish attitude. (You're right about the whole "hating the popular girl for being popular even if you envied her" comment). But when I got a glimpse on the ending, I thought, "MORE!". I mean, Lisa and Rick went through so many obstacles regarding their relationship, and I think they deserve more. I did watch the 2nd movie, "ROBOTECH II: The Sentinels" wherein Rick and Lisa got married, but there still should have more! Like a kiss or something... (Not like the "order"-of-Lisa kiss, but just a sweet kiss. (I'm being such a hopeless romantic because of this ROBOTECH..)
I also agree with you about the fact that they HAVE TO make this show as good (or even better) than the original, or else, fans will protest. And really, Tobey should Max... But who do you have in mind to play Rick? Or Lisa? Or Minmei?
But, ALL-IN-ALL, I just REALLY want to thank you VERY MUCH for this article. That through its splendid words, I realized that ROBOTECH was more than an anime worth watching. It was an anime that will remain in my heart forever, and that's all because of you! (BTW, I can no longer download the songs.... Will you try to fix it? Pretty please.....)

I remember watching the old VHS of this show when I was a kid.
Robotech left a massive influence on my life. Awesome story, Characters and Ideas.
You know, all that stuff that's getting harder find in anime these days.
I'm having a hard time waiting for this movie already.
But seriously, I don't think Tobey Maguire would be good for Max either. I don't think he's a bad actor or anything, I just don't think he should play either of them.
Off the top of my head, I think the guy who plays Dean on Supernatural would be better!
But, to be perfectly honest, I don't really care about stars in it. I just hope they do it right (You know, unlike Transformers when you watched it the second time, or first depending on how big a fan you were).
I think I'd like it better if they just did the think in pure, ultra-highly rendered anime, regardless of celebrities.

Surprisingly, Robotech holds up a lot better than most of those other fondly remembered 80s toons. Transformers barely has legs to stand on. Voltron is hysterical (watch them try to write their way around the deaths of major characters). But Robotech maintains some semblance of story, and remains -- dare I say it? -- mature for a kid's toon. Upon rewatching, I actually got kinda misty eyed when rick, laid out in a hospital bed, is told about Roy. Sssshhhh. Don't tell the internet.
Maguire is producing this adaptation and wants to star. I'm a little sad about that. I loved his Peter Parker, but he's just too damn old for Rick Hunter at this point. Plus, in my heart of hearts, I had kind of hoped they might actually cast somebody remotely asian in the lead. But no, Hollywood ain't ready for that. Obviously, as Forbidden Kingdom proves. Who makes a film starring the two biggest martial arts stars since Bruce Lee, and then decides to revolve the plot around a white boy from Boston? Seriously? Ugh. Anyway, you are not alone in your childhood-fannery of Robotech.

Robotech was also my first introduction to anime. Even now as I read through the comments written here, it brings back so much nostalgia. I'm pleasantly surprised that they're going to make a live-action movie about it. I agree that Toby McGuire shouldn't play Rick. I'd say Jake Gyllanhaal would be a better cast for the lead of Rick Hunter. He's got that pretty-boy face and charm that Rick also has. Btw, you weren't the only one that had a crush on a fictional character...this girl once did too....but who can blame me....Rick Hunter is so adorably cute...for a cartoon character.

Robotech is the last remaining "good thing" about my childhood - as mentioned earlier, Transformers and Voltron were infomercials Robotech clearly stood out (although I did enjoy Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, but never got the entire giant plant thing they always seemed to be driving on).
Anyways, I have a post that pitches the SDF-1 against the Enterprise - keep or delete, you decide.

I recently ordered the full Robotech set on DVD and have been watching it as I recently also gave up drinking and don't have much else to do. Every episode reminds me of my childhood. Obviously the story doesn't hold up as well, and I skip past certain parts, but the overall look, feel and battle scenes with Minmay singing are still awesome. "Stagefright" is a legit good song! lol, I think. Is there any recent anime as good as Macross was? I gave gundham wing a try, but it wasn't the same, probably due to lack of any childhood memories associated with it.
