Week Round-up: “Hello! Miss” et al…

Since last week was the week of many finales, that makes this week the (very busy) week of many premieres. Help me, I’m drowning in dramas! This week alone, we have the premieres of: Que Sera Sera, Hello! Miss, Witch Amusement, Thank You, Devil (Mawang), H.I.T… Seriously, I don’t know where I’ll get the time. I’ll make the time somehow. Maybe most of the shows will suck so I don’t have to feel bad about dropping them.

There was no new episode of Que Sera Sera today (boo for televised sporting events!), but I do have ONE related goody for you (much thanks to yeohweping and ay_link!):

(Theme) SONG OF THE DAY

W & Whale – “월광” (Moonlight, or Moonrise): Main theme song to Que Sera Sera. Can’t you just picture Eric strutting down the street to this song? He’s not at all my type, but I can’t deny he IS one sexy man. [ Download ]

“HELLO! MISS” (aka “Hello! Baby”)

I was really looking forward to the new KBS Monday-Tuesday drama Hello! Miss (헬로! 애기씨), and probably like most other people, it’s because of its star, the sparkling LEE DA HAE, who was made a household name by her star turn as effervescent Yoo Rin in My Girl. Since then, she’s been seen in numerous CFs, but this is her first drama in just over a year and everyone’s curious to see her back on television.

It’s also because of Lee Da Hae that I think expectations are high for this drama. I was mildly disappointed by the first hour, but the second more than made up for it.

(By the way, this drama is being subbed in English by WITH S2 — go team! I’m not going to be recapping Hello! Miss, as ripgal is doing a lovely job over at soompi. And I’ve got my hands full…)

BACKGROUND

You know, I’ve been seeing a lot of comparisons between Hello! Miss and Witch Amusement, which is a bit odd because they aren’t ratings competitors. They’re also on different stations (KBS and SBS), and don’t share the same writer or director, which are usually the instances when the “A is better than B!” and “No way, B is totally way more bester!” arguments tend to come into play. Maybe the comparison is to be expected; both are bright, fun romantic comedies. Also, perhaps both are contenders to be the next big My Girl-like offering — which Lee Da Hae starred in and Witch Amusement‘s director directed.

In any case, I’d rather people not compare the two, since somehow, fans seem to put down the other series when praising their favorite. I like both, and I don’t want to put down either one.

Anyway. A note on the title — it can be read as Hello! Miss or Hello! Baby. The Korean title reads “hello aegisshi” — “aegisshi” is the southern pronunciation for the word “agasshi,” which means “young miss.” Agasshi is a generic term that can be used on any young female, like ajusshi is for men. In this case, though, Su Ha is referred to as Aegisshi as a respectful title, akin to “young mistress” as she is the owner of her historical home, Hwa Ahn Dang. Her loyal family and neighbors refer to her as Aegisshi while other young ladies are simply agasshi.

Also, the word “aegi” means baby and “sshi” is the suffix attached to names to make it Mr. or Ms. (so therefore, “Ms. Baby”). Normally, I wouldn’t think the wordplay is significant enough to comment on, but the KBS official website uses the URL with “hellobaby,” which indicates the pun is intentional.

CAST

Like I said, Lee Da Hae is the big draw, and she’s adorable in this (not to mention a beautiful, and realistic, cryer). She’s much more nave and childlike than Yoo Rin was in My Girl, so I don’t buy the argument that she’s replaying the same character. Su Ha is delightfully incongruous with her surroundings, and that makes her endearing. It also definitely evokes the protective gene in her leading man, LEE JI HOON. Normally, on a purely superficial level, I wouldn’t be drawn to Lee Ji Hoon… He isn’t my idea of traditionally handsome, and I can think of better-looking actors out there. But, I am totally in love with him in this series. Usually I look at the leading males with a detached eye of appreciation as eye candy, and I root for their characters to get the girl, but with Lee Ji Hoon’s character Dong Kyu, it is LOVE.

For instance, Su Ha, being the sheltered country girl that she is, calls cell phones “hand telephones” (sohn jeonhwa), and instead of laughing or making her feel bad, Dong Kyu adapts and calls them sohn jeonhwas as well. He even buys her one, and how does he program his “name” into her phone? “Please Sell Your House”! (Since he’s trying to convince Su Ha to sell to him.)

Another moment of cuteness to look forward to: In previews for Episode 3, Su Ha becomes annoyed with Dong Kyu (동규) and nicknames him “Ddong Kyu” (똥규), where “ddong” means poop. In a clip where she talks to a dog, she decides to name him Ddong Kyu as well, which is both immature and adorable. (Because! She has a dog named after him! Even if it’s meant to be an insult!)

As for the second leads, HA SEOK JIN is very good-looking and plays his conceited model role with enough humor to make him funny rather than annoying. I wish I could say the same for YEON MI JOO, though, playing the “natural-looking (but not natural) beauty” Hwa Ran. Formerly a fashion model, Yeon Mi Joo made her acting debut in last fall’s SBS drama Lovers, playing a supporting role as the conniving assistant/secretary Yoon. Neither role (in Lovers or Hello! Miss) is very demanding, and she’s not necessarily bad… she’s just got no range. She’s like a robot stuck in its “bland and snooty” setting. And her English is embarrassing.

Su Ha’s friend Jeong Sook is pretty much a caricature, and I hope they dial her back a bit, because she can be really amusing. I just think it’s funny to make her someone who’s so clueless she’s racked up $30,000 in debt in pyramid schemes.

I also like the fact that for once, they’re not beating around the bush and have the lead guy already falling for the girl as early as the first episode. And the way Lee Ji Hoon plays Dong Kyu, I totally buy it, and wish him success! He’s so sweet and caring, and funny at the same time. As much as I’m a sucker for the typical ice-man-thawed-by-warm-hearted-girl story line (My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, My Girl, Full House), this is a refreshing change.

It’ll be interesting to see how this will continue to fare against its time-slot competitor:

.

“H.I.T.” (Homicide Investigation Team)

MBC’s (also new) drama H.I.T. stars an actress I greatly admire, GO HYUN JUNG, made famous by seminal 1990s drama Sandglass (Moraeshigye), which still ranks as one of the most-watched kdramas of all time. She retired after getting married, went through a messy and unfortunate divorce, then came back strong last year in the funny, often-risque comedy-drama What’s Up Fox? But H.I.T. (Homicide Investigation Team) seems to be following the American trend for procedural crime dramas (I hear shows like CSI are gaining popularity in Korea these days), so perhaps it won’t compete for the same viewership as Hello! Miss‘s romantic-comedy stylings.

H.I.T. is performing very strongly in the ratings, perhaps appealing to those who are tired of the romantic dramas and find a well-produced, fast-paced police drama more to their liking. I had a favorable impression of the first episode, but I had a vague feeling of its derivativeness. Part of the reason I enjoy kdramas so much is because they’re so different and fresh, and provide a welcome new perspective from American television. H.I.T. is no doubt well-produced, but it almost has a very borrowed feel, rather than a homegrown Korean sensibility. (In contrast, Que Sera Sera feels both fresh and distinctively modern and Korean.) In the Korean television landscape, H.I.T. may be something new and exciting, but I’m not as easily hooked.

“DEVIL” aka “Mawang”

To be honest, I was really hoping Devil would suck… Not because I wanted it to fail, but because I cannot possibly add another drama to my slate. But I was met with a feeling of dread when I realized this show is good. Really good. Ack!

Another cast of up-and-comers, with JOO JI HOON coming off last year’s Goong, SHIN MIN AH from A Love To Kill in which she co-starred with Rain, and UHM TAE WOONG, younger brother to pop queen Uhm Jung Hwa and coming off an incredible run from his role in Resurrection (aka Rebirth), which garnered him wide praise. (Of course, to me, he will always be the handsome but possessive Ajusshi from Delightful Girl Choon Hyang.)

I may have to catch up with Devil later, after the other shows finish, but it’s definitely one worth watching. Unfortunately, it seems the three-way ratings battle between this, Witch Amusement and Thank You may relegate Devil to the backseat as the two simpler (in concept) relationship dramas go head-to-head. It’s hard for three good shows to gain equal traction in such a competitive Wednesday-Thursday timeslot; we can look at their direct predecessors as an example — Surgeon Bong Dalhee and Dal Ja’s Spring (both popular with single 20- and 30-something women) pulled ahead and left Goong S in the dust.

I hope Devil hangs in there, because the thriller is beautifully shot and photographed — amazing camera work and art direction; you usually see this kind of quality in films, not in television — and the concept is engrossing. Tarot cards, serial killers, and paranormal abilities? Come on! And unlike H.I.T., which is stylized in a very glossy, slick way, there’s a grittiness and earthy vibe to Devil that I really like.

“THANK YOU”

I’d intended to watch Thank You so I could add my thoughts to this post, but couldn’t spend enough time with the first two eps to have a valid opinion on it. I’ll only say that I was originally turned away from this drama because when you hear “cute child” and “AIDS” in the story description, there are certain things that must come with the territory, and I’m not quite masochistic enough to inflict that kind of pain on myself voluntarily.

However, by all accounts, the series has started off light-hearted and fun (see, they’re going to hook you in early… and then bring the PAIN!!). This will be actor JANG HYUK‘s first project back after his two-year enrollment in the army, and he co-stars with GONG HYO JIN and the child actress SEO SHIN AE, who will in short order win over your heart, then rip it right out. (Did I mention? Child! AIDS!)

But the show has started off with good ratings, and looks to continue in that vein. Well, you’ve been forewarned!

Waaah! Thanks for the awesome recaps! By the way, does it mean that on KBS World, Hello!Baby will start the same week as Mawang? Because I'm not following When Spring Comes (the current Mon-Tue drama) so I'm afraid I'll miss the debut.. (By the way I started reading your blog for Dalja recaps, now it's become a surfing staple!)

Thanks everyone! :D I love that this helps people decide what to watch, even though I'm still having trouble deciding myself! Seriously, have we had such a good lineup of dramas airing simultaneously as this spring?? Plus I know I can always catch up on things later, but then I find I miss all the wonderful discussions that happen while the series is airing... sigh... I wish I had more time in a day. Self-discipline? What's that?

im also looking forward to mawang! the ratings may not be high but the deep and dark vibe to it makes it all exciting, since i dont know much korean, mawang is very hard for me to understand. the drama has so much questions that left me hanging... it gave me the same feel as LOST (american tv series) but in a totally new dimension because it had psychometrics and tarot cards..

this drama is definetely a cool show to watch :)

How ironic..I too hoped that Mawang would suck!! Haha. I'm really in a quandary now as to which show to focus on. I can't possibly focus on all 4! Initially I decided on Witch Amusement because I loved Jaehee ever since Choon Hyang, but reading what you and others at soompi have written, I'm undecided again!! Waaa! Help!! (but what a wonderful dilemma to have - I'd rather this, than no good dramas to choose from...)

I totally agree!! I fell in love with Dong Kyu when I finished watching epi 2. He's just too sweet.

me too me too! i just LOVE Hello! Miss!!!!

i've been searching around for reviews on it and i'm glad to find it here! to see so many people in love with the show! =)

i have to agree that LDH is really portraying very well as the aegisshi of HAD. she's just perfect! and LJH surprised me so much cos i never thought that he has any humourous cells in him, especially after "Wonderful Life". so this side of him that was brought out in the show was really amazing. and of course, the way he confessed his interest in LDH was so sudden and sweet. really really sweet....

hope i'm not spoiling anything for anyone who hasn't watch eps 3. ;)

please enjoy the show til the end! it's gonna be fun!

The reason I'm writing is I hope you'd watch "Thank You" cos' I'm anticipating your views on it. I managed to watch four episodes on youtube but the series has since been suspended due to copyrights issues. I think it's one of the better ones shown currently; good cameraworks, subtle acting, interesting dialogues and of course, a certain sombre and heartwrenching mood that is not overly done.
Would you happen to know where I can catch this series on-line?

Thanks a great deal if you could help.

I just love Lee Dae Hae, so cute, so beautiful & love her great acting. I hope she gets another award for this.

thank you so much for the previews to all these excellent dramas! they all look so good...it's times like these that i wish there were more hours in a day to watch them all.
so after consideration, i had to decide which drama to watch, and i decided on Que Sera Sera and Thank You. they are both sooo different from each other but both so enticing to watch. good thing they're shown on different days of the week. i never got into The Devil or Witch Amusement, but i can tell you this: H!M is hilarious with Lee Da Hae...and although i loved her with Lee Dong Wook in My Girl, she and Lee Ji Hoon have great chemistry together. however, Que Sera Sera is even deeper with its 4 complex leads struggling with their relationships...and the PD is so clever. Thank You is sad but it's so engaging to watch. all the characters are great, have great chem. together, and the writer is talented as well. thank you javabeans for all your summaries!!!

I don't watch the other dramas playing at the same time with Hello Miss. I love Lee Dae Hae. She's a superb actress who already won 4 or 5 performance awards inspite of her very young age. I'm still searching for her first winning drama "Heaven's Fate", but could not locate it anywhere. Dae Hae speaks English well also because she went to high school in Sydney, Australia. Go Dae Hae. I'm eagerly waiting for a very good ending on this drama. By the way, I am from California, USA.

I love Lee Ji Hoon's facial expression & body language when he's around the character of Lee Dae Hae. I love Lee Ji Hoon's singing on this drama. How I wish he sang more. Good luck & God bless you both.

after reading your short descrp. on ma wang, i couldnt agree more
actually the only thing that attracts me is joo jihoon, off course,
i thought supernatural power sounded ridiculous for k-drama,
but i have to admit, ma wang's visual is very beautiful, like every scene have every detail, dark colour scheme, its very rare
now i wish shin mina's would learn more on acting.
she's the main character here, yet she fail to impress me

Great reviews! Been watching Hello, Lady and Mawang over KBS World and both are very engaging...though personally, Mawang is more gripping and captivating. Maybe I am just more of the psychological-suspense thriller type. I love the way it plays with your mind, totally not expecting what will happen next. I agree, that the shots made are excellent! The patterns and themes add much atmosphere to the story. It made me feel like I was watching "Mars" (Taiwanese drama) once again, though this is darker in feel, I think.

Very intelligent series! I vote for Mawang for the more adventurous viewer! For those who want feel good entertainment, Hello Lady is quite good too.

I admired your extraordinary way to elaborate things on dramas, even you're one of my inspiration to make my own blog which includes reviews of serials that I've watched.
And your opinion on dramas becomes one of my reference to pick dramas I'm gonna watch..
(Psst..I am currently watching Soulmate, because your recommendation. I like it so far )

BTW, I love reading your summaries, and it becomes my daily routine now!

Wow, I just found this site through a recommendation from a poster on asian fanatics. Very quickly, I'd also like to highly recommend 'Thank You' as a series of great depth and virtuoso acting performances. I'm only a viewing veteran of about 20 dramas, but I'd have to rate this one right at or near the top of the heap. The two leads are superb and Shin Goo (who plays Mr. Lee) and Seo Shin Ae (who plays the little girl, Lee Bom) will almost certainly reap a huge bounty of acting awards when the season reaches it's end.
Do not miss this series. They should make it required viewing in every elementary, middle and high school in the world!

Hi javabeans,
I happened to come across this blog and as a native Korean learning English I really enjoyed reading your posts about our dramas, Korean culture, and the language since I have sometimes wondered how I would say or explain some Korean expressions in English appropriately without killing the delicate implications and the context. Also your post about the drama Feeling reminded me of the old days when I thought how adorable Woo Heejin (the lead actress) was! (yes.. I'm a man..)

Speaking of "Thank you," I'd highly recommend it and don't want you to miss this great drama which depicts in a lighthearted and heartwarming way how biases and prejudices against the usually-conceived bad things like people with AIDS and moms growing their kids alone before getting to marriage get dissolved through love and the value of a family. Also I've loved Jang Hyuk and Kong Hyojin's actings and they didn't disappoint me this time too. I don't watch dramas very much but I really enjoyed "Thank You" this year.

Also, if you could use some time and haven't watched it before, I'd like to recommend watching "Ruler Of Your Own World" (Ne MotDaeRo HaeRa). http://www.krystalheart.com/royow/
It's a 5 years old drama.. still remembered as the topmost by quite a few people. Everything's perfect such as the acting, script, plot, and the songs. I hope I could read your take and impressions on the drama in the future. Thanks for the great posts. By the way, did I say that I burst into tears watching here the Nonstop episode about family that you uploaded? Thanks so much again!

Yes oh course there were a few painful scene to watch, but in the end I still somehow find this drama happy. It had a very happy ending in my opinion. This drama I thought was just really beautiful. The relationship between the mom and the daughter was just so beautiful. I really enjoy this drama and would highly recomend it. It was unlike all of those dying of cancer or whatever drama. They didn't focus so much on the fact that she was dying (barely at all). This drama was just mainly about human relationships and it was really touching. Yes I will admit that I was just in all complete broken down crying mode during the last few episode. I wasn't crying because of the child, but just at how beautiful human relationships can be. I was sincerely touch by this serie. I'm not good at talking about it, but I just really recommmmennnndeedd it. This serie was really welll done and the acting was awesome. This serie reallly did have a realllly wonderful happy ending. I didn't want to give it away but I promise you that the ending was a happy one. Go watch it please.

Hi Javabean
I'd also like to echo the supporters of 'Thank You' as a must-watch for KDrama lovers. Like others, 'kid' and 'AIDS' are just not my things and I've been avoiding it .... But, seriously, nothing really interests me post-Coffee Prince (and I'm still in CP withdrawal mode). I tried a couple other dramas but didn't finish them after a few episodes. Then I decided to watch Thank You after reading Bellevza's (?) remarks at D-Addict Forum that this is her no. 1 KDrama this year whereas CP is only no. 2. (She wrote excellent and in-depth reviews at the CP forum.)

I finished Thank You in two days. It is not what I expect it to be but rather a great portrayal of love in its many forms and dimensions. An engaging piece on human relationships! Someone mentioned that this drama has an indie feel which I don't disagree - you can picture a small mid-west town movie in similar vein. The script is tight and the dialogue is witty and concise, along with smooth direction and superb acting. I particularly like the positive attitude of the main female towards her daughter's AIDS situation and her own personal predicaments! Gong Hyo Jin as usual delivers a credible performance - she's not my type of favourites but most well-suited for this role. Jang Hyuk's previous works (Windstruck and The Success of a Delightful Girl) don't leave much an impression in me but he carries such a haunting intensity in this one that you almost feel his pain. The supporting cast especially the little girl and the grandpa are just other gems of this drama. Go watch it - it's so heart warming and does have a happy ending too!

I have to say that CP remains to be my no. 1 with Thankyou sitting at no. 2. (I just have to say Daljai Spring or Que Sera Sera didn't get my buy in and Witch Amusement is just a waste of time.)
