I’ve been 👎 for the tamest criticisms. It’s ridiculous. The 👍👎 system doesn’t exactly encourage the minority opinion either. Comment sections are a place for conversation, not a popularity contest
Maybe some just lazy to state their counter opinion and use down vote instead, just my theory though. What’s the impact of it anyway? I don’t find it such a big deal.
I just realized I already got 10 downvotes lol. It’s not a big deal for me, I assume at least there’s someone who actually read my comment. Or could be accidentally happen.
I suppose if we think of a downvote as being used on rude comments or worse, it is definitely undesirable. However, it’s not the case for majority of downvotes here on DB. It could be – “I don’t agree with you” “I think Healer is the most awesome drama!” “How dare you insult my favorite drama!!!” “Wookie is my bae”
They don’t stop me. I don’t need to shut up my opinion just because I think differently from the majority out there.
Maybe that’s my problem. For me, I would only downvote a comment if it was rude or offensive. Whereas if I had a different opinion, I would comment. A 👎 is inherently negative and is unable to really express any besides “BAD”. I don’t take it personally, but the connotation is still there.
I beg to differ… I don’t take it as meaning only “BAD,” at least not on DB, just a disagreement. And even if someone meant it as “bad,” I don’t mind it. I’m fine if someone thinks my comment is bad. I just take it as a feedback to my comment, negative feedback is fine too, that way, I can know that not everyone agrees with me.
That’s the problem when you have nothing but a symbol though. The interpretation varies. Imagine if we were all trying to express our differing opinions in this conversation through symbols. Things get lost in translation.
Listen, I really don’t take this thumbs up and down thing as hard to heart as this thread might suggest. I just see cracks in the function.
In the end, I still think it’s good that there is an option for people to express a negative feedback as much as they can express a good one. Removing this and just giving a Report button would not allow for that.
I’m not offended by it. I just think is discourages comments in general. Whether it’s laziness, or makes someone too afraid to post a countering a opinion.
I feel that it’s a misleading way to “rank” comments, if you will.
& I think if the peeps using the thumbs system would probably not bother to comment in the first place. There’s not much value in commenting something short along of the lines of “Like!” “Dislike!” Maybe the thumbs is a way for those who used to not comment (or reply to every comment, just a few) to participate more, if you think about it ?
A comment with more upvotes is seen as having a higher value than one with fewer. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but when you add in the downvotes, that’s when things get muddy.
At the end of the day, it’s really up to Beanies to evaluate the “value” of a comment for themselves, rather than be told by others what to think of a comment. I trust most Beanies to be mature enough to think for themselves. I don’t see necessarily a comment with more upvotes as more valuable, just that many share the feelings expressed (for example, to me, a long comment has more “value” to me personally than a short comment).
@greemlamb exactly, I would give a thumbs up to a short comment I like, and wouldn’t give one to a long comment I disagree with, not because it has less value. I would reply to them in that case.
Everyone can think for themselves, but at the end of the day, numbers still matter. Would you see a YouTube video with thousands of dislikes and still watch it? We all search for approval with what we put out to the world. And I don’t really buy that that’s something we grow out of completely with age. Of course beanies can evaluate the worth of comments themselves, but a large of portion of beanies are still very young, and the positives of the 👍👎 system doesn’t change the fact that it is a system in which their comments are judged. People will have different opinions as to whether that’s good or bad.
We might search approval for what we put out in the world, but then, we also need to be mature enough to take it when others don’t give it to us as much as we want to.
Most videos on youtube don’t get millions and millions of views, not even thousands, hasn’t stopped the thousands of new videos getting uploaded day after day. As much as we seek approval, we also have the desire to share and communicate our thoughts and put it out in the world and leave our trace.
People will still comment, don’t worry. One of the best things of the internet, is the availability and ease of consumers’ feedback, where other consumers can know what their fellow consumers feel about a movie, a video, a product, with reviews, and mostly, with a ratings system for a wider use, rather than have to just read critics’ and “experts” opinions. It’s an imperfect but very valuable system to save our time and vet content.
and yes, I’ve watched videos with hundreds of thousands of dislikes before. I like to inform myself about what the general population doesn’t like or disagree with.
think of thumbs as brief replies. If people used to still comment even when a majority of comments don’t have replies, they will still continue to comment even when others have more thumbs than them.
Yes, they’re either lazy, or want to give a simple feedback to more comments than they have time to write a reply to. I used to just nod or shake my head when I read comments, which no one but me can see. Now, I can use visible thumbs to reflect my reaction to comments, I like it.
Completely agree with you Greenlamb. I don’t see it as anything different than a sign of disagreement or agreement, this system we have here.
Of course there might also be some trolls amongst the people that give thumbs down to comments but I don’t think we should really care about those either.
Actually, quite a few times I have read a comment that I disagreed with and would have given a thumbs down but I have seen on these fan posts already quite often how harsh people seem to take that and I don’t want to ruin someone’s day. So do I instead write a reply to tell them exactly what I disagree with or don’t like about their comment? Well….no…sorry but not really. I just end up continuing to scroll down and read another comment…
So I think that this system is rather beneficial in that way – it catches the opinions of the people that are too lazy or tired to write it out or don’t really see the point because their opinion can be easily summed up with: “I disagree because I don’t think so.” IMO without the thumbs down we would end up getting less information about the reaction our comments receive rather than more.
I hope people don’t take it to heart if they get a thumbs-down and that we don’t need to make a new fan post about it whenever it happens….otherwise it creates a stigma that makes it difficult to use the system to it’s full potential.
I just take it as an equivalent of “I have read your comment and disagree” which is no big deal. It’s a convenient way for peeps to make a “tame criticism” to a comment. If you don’t take it personally, and just as others’ opinion on what you expressed, then it should be fine. 🙂 How many votes you get shouldn’t stop your from speaking up if you think what you have to say is worth saying. 🙂
Hmm, interesting take. I never thought of the thumbs as a popularity contest (but that’s probably because I haven’t heard of that term for years since my teens, which, frankly, I don’t miss). When I see a comment with many thumbs up, I’m just happy that so much love has been expressed towards another <3 Maybe I'm mushy by nature.
You’ll get there soon enough. As we age, we stop putting so much importance into everything and be more selective about what affects us, which, trust me, is a liberating feeling.

There is no ranking of comments like youtube or disqus though? The comments are numbered and displayed chronologically?
