Like I loved Tomorrow With You, but a drama with Shin Min Ah as an aloof time slipper and Lee Je Hoon as her sensitive photographer husband would’ve been TEN TIMES BETTER.

If dramaland is gonna keep riding this time slip/travel trend, I want a drama where the GIRL is the one who time travels (preferably not to Goryeo though…)

How about Goguryeo for My Only Love Song?

I forgot about that one! That seems like a friendlier Goryeo.

Faith and Splash Splash Love are the only lady time travelers I can think of. OoOo I haven’t checked out My Only Love Song.
Yeah if there’s going to ride this wave of time high jinks it would be nice to have the ladies travel more.

    1
    1

I have seen Splash Splash Love. Adored it, but only two episodes man… Still waiting on Seul Gi and Doo Joon to reunite in another project.

Interesting that the trend seems to be that male time travelers get to go to the future while the ladies get stuck in the past…

I haven’t heard the greatest thing about Faith… I also refuse to watch any LMH dramas where his hair is god damn ridiculous (which is most of them…)

Basically I just want ladies to get to go to the future too.

      1
      1

I love Seul Gi. Give her all the shows any character and she sparkles. Oh my gosh I never thought about that you’re right the women are sent to the past almost as a rule. I’d like to see them go to the future or do a Goblin thing where they just live so long they see the future.
Yeah Faith sigh they’re are loads of better dramas. I will give them points for the leap frogging time travel they had her do. That was different.

Drama Pet Peeve #2: Sageuk Side Bangs. I’m not gonna take you seriously as a king if we share the same haircut I had in middle school.

8
5

I have a hard time taking the cleanshaven babyfaced youths as badass warriors in sageuk. A really hard time. I need some grizzle on those faces and some features that don’t look androgynous or 12.

    0
    1

Unfortunately, it seems that very few k-actors can grow real facial hair. Plus I think it goes against the flower boy image most shows want to portray. If they do get facial hair, it’s normally reserved for what I call the ~passage of time~ goatee.

      0
      1

        LOL @ POT Goatee.

It’s hard for me to believe that these waifish flower boys with perfect skin would be able to pick up a sword and swing it more than once or twice without being worn out. Don’t even get me started on how they maintain those complexions (and the awful hairstyles you pointed out) without products. Watching sageuk requires me to suspend disbelief so hard on some of these characters. 😛

        1

Beauty standards are so weird. Especially how different they can be culturally. Western culture has conditioned me to be attracted to tan skin and strong jaw lines, so a lot of the actors considered attractive in dramaland look like alien-esque , elven kings to me. But I try not to judge.

I’d hope that the distaste for the awful wigs are universal though. I’m having war flashbacks remembering some.

Drama Pet Peeve: When they have the obviously 30+ year old leads play their teenage self in flashbacks. Usually with a terrible wig. Please just hire another actor.

Lol legit. The most recent one for me was Yoon Hyun-Min in Tunnel.

I vacillate between hating it and just finding it hilarious because it’s so absurd. I don’t mind it when it’s played for comedy in something like Fight My Way, but when it’s done seriously, it pulls me out of the story.

    1
    2

Agreed! The girls’ wigs in Fight My Way were ridiculously big! So funny.

      1
      0

I think the most absurd example of this that I have seen so far was in Master – God of Noodles. They made some of the extras really old as well…to try and make it not so obvious? It failed. Iol

      1
      0

“Usually with a terrible wig.” Omg, yes. Such. Hideous. Wigs. Or awkward hairstyles.

    1
    0

Well, in my head, I still look exactly the same as I did when I was in high school. Despite being well over 30. I rationalize the flashbacks that way — that they are memories of people who have always looked the way they do now. At least in their heads.

    1
    1

You must have some good genes girl!

That’s a nice way to see it, but I don’t think that’s ever the intent of the PD when they execute it like that. If so, I’d rather they keep the character in their modern clothes and hairstyle so it’d be clear that the characters themselves are “visiting” the past.

I understand the move when they need the current actor’s skills in the scene and they don’t want to risk a young rookie actor ruining the scene, but there are young actors that can act, so why not use them? The alternative requires too much suspension of belief sometimes.

      1
      1

Oh, it’s only in my head that I look 18. I recognize that this is sitcom levels of self-delusion.

I like your point about giving young actors a chance. That is an excellent way to give rookies experience. And wouldn’t require mental gymnastics to make it plausible. 😉

I find it a little campy, but that’s kinda the fun of it. It immediately reminded me of a kdrama though with the pseudo-contract marriage plot and potential love-triangle. Looking at it through that lens, I think it could be an entertaining watch. I’m always a sucker for people in period costumes as well.

29

Maybe some just lazy to state their counter opinion and use down vote instead, just my theory though. What’s the impact of it anyway? I don’t find it such a big deal.

    4
    4

I just realized I already got 10 downvotes lol. It’s not a big deal for me, I assume at least there’s someone who actually read my comment. Or could be accidentally happen.

      4
      0

I suppose if we think of a downvote as being used on rude comments or worse, it is definitely undesirable. However, it’s not the case for majority of downvotes here on DB. It could be – “I don’t agree with you” “I think Healer is the most awesome drama!” “How dare you insult my favorite drama!!!” “Wookie is my bae”

They don’t stop me. I don’t need to shut up my opinion just because I think differently from the majority out there.

      4
      1

Maybe that’s my problem. For me, I would only downvote a comment if it was rude or offensive. Whereas if I had a different opinion, I would comment. A 👎 is inherently negative and is unable to really express any besides “BAD”. I don’t take it personally, but the connotation is still there.

        1
        1

I beg to differ… I don’t take it as meaning only “BAD,” at least not on DB, just a disagreement. And even if someone meant it as “bad,” I don’t mind it. I’m fine if someone thinks my comment is bad. I just take it as a feedback to my comment, negative feedback is fine too, that way, I can know that not everyone agrees with me.

          3
          3

That’s the problem when you have nothing but a symbol though. The interpretation varies. Imagine if we were all trying to express our differing opinions in this conversation through symbols. Things get lost in translation.

Listen, I really don’t take this thumbs up and down thing as hard to heart as this thread might suggest. I just see cracks in the function.

            2
            0

In the end, I still think it’s good that there is an option for people to express a negative feedback as much as they can express a good one. Removing this and just giving a Report button would not allow for that.

            4
            0

^ you have a valid point there.

Oh well, the internet is imperfect.

            3
            0

I’m not offended by it. I just think is discourages comments in general. Whether it’s laziness, or makes someone too afraid to post a countering a opinion.

I feel that it’s a misleading way to “rank” comments, if you will.

      0
      1

There is no ranking of comments like youtube or disqus though? The comments are numbered and displayed chronologically?

        1
        2

& I think if the peeps using the thumbs system would probably not bother to comment in the first place. There’s not much value in commenting something short along of the lines of “Like!” “Dislike!” Maybe the thumbs is a way for those who used to not comment (or reply to every comment, just a few) to participate more, if you think about it ?

          3
          0

It’s still gives the comments “stats” though. Like this many positives and this many negatives.

          0
          10

Sorry, I think I’m having trouble understanding.. How is stats something bad?

            0
            0

A comment with more upvotes is seen as having a higher value than one with fewer. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but when you add in the downvotes, that’s when things get muddy.

            0
            0

At the end of the day, it’s really up to Beanies to evaluate the “value” of a comment for themselves, rather than be told by others what to think of a comment. I trust most Beanies to be mature enough to think for themselves. I don’t see necessarily a comment with more upvotes as more valuable, just that many share the feelings expressed (for example, to me, a long comment has more “value” to me personally than a short comment).

            4
            0

@greemlamb exactly, I would give a thumbs up to a short comment I like, and wouldn’t give one to a long comment I disagree with, not because it has less value. I would reply to them in that case.

            2
            0

Everyone can think for themselves, but at the end of the day, numbers still matter. Would you see a YouTube video with thousands of dislikes and still watch it? We all search for approval with what we put out to the world. And I don’t really buy that that’s something we grow out of completely with age. Of course beanies can evaluate the worth of comments themselves, but a large of portion of beanies are still very young, and the positives of the 👍👎 system doesn’t change the fact that it is a system in which their comments are judged. People will have different opinions as to whether that’s good or bad.

            2
            0

We might search approval for what we put out in the world, but then, we also need to be mature enough to take it when others don’t give it to us as much as we want to.
Most videos on youtube don’t get millions and millions of views, not even thousands, hasn’t stopped the thousands of new videos getting uploaded day after day. As much as we seek approval, we also have the desire to share and communicate our thoughts and put it out in the world and leave our trace.
People will still comment, don’t worry. One of the best things of the internet, is the availability and ease of consumers’ feedback, where other consumers can know what their fellow consumers feel about a movie, a video, a product, with reviews, and mostly, with a ratings system for a wider use, rather than have to just read critics’ and “experts” opinions. It’s an imperfect but very valuable system to save our time and vet content.

            4
            0

and yes, I’ve watched videos with hundreds of thousands of dislikes before. I like to inform myself about what the general population doesn’t like or disagree with.

            3
            0

think of thumbs as brief replies. If people used to still comment even when a majority of comments don’t have replies, they will still continue to comment even when others have more thumbs than them.

            2
            0

^ your sage wisdom is making me grumpy…

            4

            3
            0

Yes, they’re either lazy, or want to give a simple feedback to more comments than they have time to write a reply to. I used to just nod or shake my head when I read comments, which no one but me can see. Now, I can use visible thumbs to reflect my reaction to comments, I like it.

      6
      2

        +100 ^^

        5
        0

Completely agree with you Greenlamb. I don’t see it as anything different than a sign of disagreement or agreement, this system we have here.
Of course there might also be some trolls amongst the people that give thumbs down to comments but I don’t think we should really care about those either.
Actually, quite a few times I have read a comment that I disagreed with and would have given a thumbs down but I have seen on these fan posts already quite often how harsh people seem to take that and I don’t want to ruin someone’s day. So do I instead write a reply to tell them exactly what I disagree with or don’t like about their comment? Well….no…sorry but not really. I just end up continuing to scroll down and read another comment…
So I think that this system is rather beneficial in that way – it catches the opinions of the people that are too lazy or tired to write it out or don’t really see the point because their opinion can be easily summed up with: “I disagree because I don’t think so.” IMO without the thumbs down we would end up getting less information about the reaction our comments receive rather than more.
I hope people don’t take it to heart if they get a thumbs-down and that we don’t need to make a new fan post about it whenever it happens….otherwise it creates a stigma that makes it difficult to use the system to it’s full potential.

        12
        0

I just take it as an equivalent of “I have read your comment and disagree” which is no big deal. It’s a convenient way for peeps to make a “tame criticism” to a comment. If you don’t take it personally, and just as others’ opinion on what you expressed, then it should be fine. 🙂 How many votes you get shouldn’t stop your from speaking up if you think what you have to say is worth saying. 🙂

    4
    0

Hmm, interesting take. I never thought of the thumbs as a popularity contest (but that’s probably because I haven’t heard of that term for years since my teens, which, frankly, I don’t miss). When I see a comment with many thumbs up, I’m just happy that so much love has been expressed towards another <3 Maybe I'm mushy by nature.

    2
    1

I’m not as far from my teens as I’d like. Maybe that’s the cause of the disconnect.

      1
      1

You’ll get there soon enough. As we age, we stop putting so much importance into everything and be more selective about what affects us, which, trust me, is a liberating feeling.

        3

I wish DB would replace the 👎 with a report option. Because that\’s what should be downvoted: malicious comments. Not someone expressing an opinion different than yours.

Am I the only one that thinks Healer is kinda overrated? I definitely didn\’t dislike it, but I\’ve always been a little perplexed by the immense love for it in the community. It was just there for me.

You’re not alone, I’m always puzzled by the love it receives. “It was just there” pretty much sums it up for me too 😛

    4
    0

    You are not alone.

Seeing the kbeauty posts these past days I have been tempted to comment that the only part of Healer that I actually loved was the part they pretended to be wedding guests to get into the conference room! But I was afraid of being downvoted 😂

I didn’t dislike it but the story and loveline feeled on a high school story level to me.

    3
    3

Lol, I got downvoted just for this post.

I think that’s it. The OTP was meant to be the main draw, but they were just “cute” for me, like a youth drama romance. I’ve never been a fan of high school dramas either, so that explains it.

No you’re not alone. I think the main reason why it is so popular – not only in this site, but other sites as well because of JCW and the OTP. I didn’t watched more than 4/5 epi because I was so angry Yoo Ji Tae played a second fiddle lol, plus the story was not really intriguing.

I wanted to be invested in YJT’s part of the plot since I like him so much, but it just didn’t feel well written.

That combined with slightly corny action scenes, and you’ve got a big portion of the drama that’s just kinda boring, lol.
