Oppa, that lamp post kiss wasn’t very satisfying. I remember how good you were in CiTT, where you and Seol “check each other’s minds”.

It is, LOL! Yes! Being an avid webtoon fan, I knew the kiss was coming but I still got the flutters! I loved this so much! And the bts made me love it even more 💔

See, I want to watch CITT when I see clips like this but then I’ve also heard how the ending made so many people ragey. Should I put myself through it for this??

    0
    2

I think mostly people built each other up to that rage + it was worsened by live-watching. I watched half a year after it aired, and except from a couple of eps around 14-15, I didn’t mind the ending/second half at all. It’s kind of open, but I thought it fit fine. And I don’t think the male lead was pushed out of the story (if I ignored the rl-drama behind it). I felt like he was still the main focus even when he wasn’t on screen, he was that much of a presence.

So I’d suggest you give it a go yourself and see what you think. It’s really great, so even if you do end up agreeing with the majority about the end, it won’t have been a waste of time 😀

I did wonder if maybe the live watching contributed to people building up the negative hype surrounding CITT. It’s interesting that you pointed that out because I’ve never thought that watching it live and binge watching it made much of a difference until a beanie mentioned it too.

Wow, PHJ must have built up a really good character to have such a big presence, even w/o being in the show. I’ll try it when I get some spare time and if I find that I really hate it by ep 14/15 I might just skip the ending!

I actually quite like open endings bc I feel like the character’s story continues. It’s more realistic to me too- even though if it’s done badly I tend to want to pull my hair out haha

        2
        11

I think it makes quite a big difference sometimes. For instance, with TLAHL, I don’t think it would’ve been built up to the “perfect” drama that it was seen as, if it weren’t for people being giddy about it together lol 😛

Yes that, and the fact that his character was the center of everyone else. He’s the one that binds all the subplots and side characters together, so the story is centered around him even when he’s not there. If that makes sense?

I love open endings ^^ Exactly, it feels more realistic. Personally the ending of CITT was what I’d hoped for when it comes to the OTP. I think most Beanies doesn’t like open endings, and most people in general perhaps, which may have contributed to the hate too. I don’t think it was too open and it felt realistic to me. If you ever do watch it and wanna discuss the ending, please let me know, I’d love to discuss it with someone else who doesn’t need closed endings 😀

          1
          1

I know, definitely I think part of why I enjoyed it so much was everyone discussing it so much- it was fun to join in and add your own opinions🙃

Wow I think I sort of get it but I won’t really understand till I watch it myself bc I can’t recall a drama where it’s centered around just one main character

Open endings have so much more opportunity for you to imagine how the characters are doing. I love it when it seems more realistic too bc then I feel like my favourite characters could potentially exist irl (is that kind of sad lol)

When I watch it, I’ll definitely find you to discuss the ending kaybee 😌

            1
            0

It’s kind of hard to explain too lol and I haven’t seen anyone else mention it being centered around him, so it doesn’t seem to be something people have generally noticed?

Haha not sad at all! I feel the same way 🙂 I like to be swept up by the illusion that it’s a real, existing world, however impossible it may be (like sci-fi for instance). I mean, it doesn’t transfer to the real world, like when people ship an OTP irl, but within the story’s world I like when it can really make you feel like it’s alive and that’s part of why I love open endings too. Real life doesn’t have closure. It’s literally a neverending story, so “and then they lived happily ever after” will often end up looking false.

There are open ending that don’t work for me though. Like POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!!!! Signal. Which no one talks about, but that was such an unsatisfying end that literally rendered the entire drama pointless. But you know, again, I’m probably pretty much on my own with that opinion 😉

I’ll look forward to it then! ^^

          1
          1

I’ll be on the lookout for it 🙃 You’re making me very intrigued about it now haha

Yeah it’s not just about the OTP irl (bc that rarely happens) but if there’s a the slightest chance that this drama could be something that’s happening in real life, they’re the ones that win. For the supernatural or fantasy aspect, the more they make the premise believable- the more hooked I’ll be. If it’s something absurd and new rules are added all the time, it drives me crazy i.e W two worlds (it did so well at the beginning and then new rules were added all the time from out of no where)

Also if it’s a neat happy ending, there’s less chance for it to get better (god I’m such a pessimist haha)

I’ve not watched signal yet, it’s very near the top of my to watch dramas though. Have you watched tomorrow with you bc that made me feel a similar way. Where was the clever plot twist? Nothing changed ughhhhh

            1
            0

W seriously bored me, which is weird since I love sci-fi and have liked pretty much every other drama that LJS has starred in. It started even before the rule-adding. I think the premise had some interesting ideas and themes, but it was clear from the beginning that it would end up a mess.

Haha I know the feeling! Sometimes all I can think is “yeah, yeah, but then two years after someone gets sick or dies or has an affair or they can’t agree about how to bring up their child or she’ll want more from life than just being a housewife” and the list goes on lol 😛

Time travel dramas tend to go wrong, so I didn’t even attempt to start, despite Shin Minah. And now verything I’ve heard about it makes me not want to watch even more.

          0
          1

I really loved W to begin with, that’s why it was so annoying to me when the quality went downhill towards the end. I’m getting so picky with dramas recently though, I swear if it doesn’t capture my interest in the first two episodes- I find it so easy to drop them (I used to hate not finishing a drama)

Hahaha exactly. So many real life reasons that people just have to work through and get over with. It was my first time travel drama so I was hoping it would be good because of the cast- another case of a drama that I enjoyed with at the beginning but then the miscommunication was so irritating to watch

Are there any dramas that you would recommend with a solid plot?

            1
            0

I think the 2 first eps can often be really different from the rest, because they’re still finding their feet – like the pilot ep of most American shows. But at the same time, if I get farther than ep 2, I have an extra hard time dropping a show. It’s easiest when I drop it at ep 1.

Miscommunication is literally the cause of 90% of all kdrama troubles lol!

Ahhh… Hmmm… Well…. Asking me for recommendations is always risky haha, I tend to give too many – and with notes too 😛 But I’ll try and be brief (easier since tight plots in dramaland is really rare lol):

LOVED with pretty much bulletproof plots (they don’t exist, but y’know close to):
          – Task Force 38
          – I Remember You (I think it belongs here? At the very least on the next-highest level of solid plots heh)
          – Misaeng
          – Reply 1988
          – The Good Wife

SOLID plots but I, subjectively, didn’t love it – can see why others would though:
          – Chief Kim
          – Ho Gu’s Love/Fool’s Love
          – It’s Okay, That’s Love
          – School 2013 (not entirely sure, it’s been a while)

MOSTLY solid plots and good stuff to make up for plotholes:
          – Drinking Solo (nvm the OTP lol, the rest is gold)
          – Pied Piper
          – CITT
          – Pinocchio and I Can Hear Your Voice (90% every drama-fan has seen these two lol, but including them anyways, since I think the plots were fairly solid, enough so for me to bingewatch)

CAN’T REMEMBER completely since it’s been a long while, but I loved it then and seem to remember the plots being pretty solid?:
          – Heart to Heart
          – We Broke Up
          – The Lover

You’ve probably seen several of them already, but since I don’t know, I just included all the ones from mydramalist that seemed to fit the bill ^^ Except for the category that I didn’t subjectively love, all of these are among my faves and I’d rewatch them all if I had the time 🙂

          1
          1

I find that most shows make me really want to watch it at the beginning but then towards the end I don’t, so I find it pretty easy to drop them.

I know, that’s why when a drama comes which keeps the miscommunication to a minimum and it’s based on actual conflict, I get a little too excited. It’s just refreshing to see characters overcome difficult problems together!

Omg that’s a brill list, merci kaybee!!? I’ve actually only seen two of those dramas on your list (IRY and Pinocchio- IRY was SO good but sad and clever and just fab)

If we ever found a drama with a bulletproof plot, that will be THE day haha😛

            1
            0

For me it’s both that and vice versa. Lots of shows start of good but become awful at the end, but I’ve also seen a lot that took me a while to warm up to and then I ended up loving it 🙂

You’re welcome ^^ Wow, only two of them? You’ve got a lot to look forward to then! And yes, IRY is amazing! It’ll always be one of my favorites.

Haha yeah. Misaeng and TF38 might just be bulletproof though? They were soooo good plot-wise (and everything-else-wise hehe).

When I first started watch dramas, I tended to go for the cute rom com ones but I find that some of them are really similar so I’ve tried branching out lol

I only recently finished IRY but dayum PBG really slays this role, him and SIG had such a bittersweet relationship though☹️

I’ve heard so many great things about misaeng but I don’t think I actually know what it’s about? Is it a drama about office workers and their struggles? I want to search for it on wiki but I did that for IRY and got spoilers😪

            1
            0

Ahh I see ^^ Yes, they do tend to get pretty similar, which can be nice, but also annoying heh.

Tbh it was the SIG-bug I caught from that drama, not the PBG one lol. Hadn’t seen either of them before at that time, but SIG’s charisma and acting really wow’ed me. Also got really interested in D.O.’s acting and Choi Won Young because of it.

Ah, well yes. That’s about it lol. It’s more of a slice-of-life drama about ordinary people, which might sound dreadfully dull (at least that’s why I hesitated to watch it at first), but it just grips you heart and soul. The first couple of eps felt kind of oppresive to me and were a bit hard to watch, but I completely binged the rest. It’s amazing. Just beware that there’s not really any romance (rare for kdrama, so I feel like a warning’s in order, since you mentioned loving romcoms hehe).

          1
          2

Also, it’s kind of an underdog story, so I guess that’s one way to describe the plot? A team’s struggle to rise above the circumstances?

            1
            0

D.O was so creepy, I thought he did really well in his role too but I haven’t seen him in anything yet! I actually first watched SIG in masters sun but didn’t really realise it was him till later on if that makes sense haha.

I’m okay with dramas that don’t have romance as long as they are gripping and exciting to watch. Ohhh okay, so would you say it’s pretty believable or are there elements which make it seem a little too dramatic.

            I love a good underdog story🙃

            1
            0

He was SO creepy! I’ve also seen him in It’s Okay That’s Love where he’s also good and then in a webdrama which was bad, though he did fine haha.

Oh it’s totally believable! I think that’s why it got such high ratings, because it reflects the life of many ordinary Koreans. The opening scene threw me at first as it seems really webtoonish lol, but it’s so short and everything else is just awesome ^^

          0
          1

Lol was that webdrama EXO next door??

Definitely looking forward to watching it now, I’ll start it after exams though bc I think I’m trying to balance a little too much at the moment haha. When you say webtoonish though, what do you mean by that?

            1
            0

Then I’ve actually seen him in two. Had completely erased EXO Next Door from my mind haha 😛 The one I was talking about is ‘Positive Physique’ or something, where he plays a college filmmaker – probably the most normal role I’ve ever seen him in lol.

You’ve got exams too atm? Same here. I’m on a semi-drama/DB ban haha, it’s not perfect, but I’ve cut down tremendously while doing this exam, so props to me? 😛 Hope your exams are going good and that you’ll soon be free and enjoying the summer!

Don’t know how to explain it, but it’s only like two mins or something at the beginning, the rest isn’t like that at all. You’ll see what I mean ^^

          1
          1

Lol whatttt, he’s not a besotted superstar or a murderer?!

Yep, I’ve got four coming up in two weeks😒 I’ve done the same lol, I’ve not completely cut them out but I’ve definitely lessened it. Haha I agree, I think that deserves a well done😜 Thanks Kaybee, you too chick! How are yours going?

            0

          Ikr, it’s unbelievable!!! *shock face*

Yikes, that’s rough! And thank you. I’ll be done by Friday, but the weather is suddenly so amazingly summer-y here that it feels much longer sometimes haha. I just wanna be outside! (Well, that and watching dramas, but ssshhh, let’s pretend I’m an outdoors-y type of person who’d never dream of sitting inside in front of the laptop when it’s 25+ degrees celsius outside 😉 )

          1
          1

Do you live in England by any chance?! Bc it’s been crazily warm here (with the expected showers here and there ofc)

That’s pretty exciting, I bet you’re glad that they’re almost over- ready for the summeeeer🌞

Haha, you’re not the only one- I’m actually really bad with heat and I’ve got hay fever (promise you I have😛) Just bring your laptop outside and then no-one can say that you’re not enjoying the weather lol

            1
            0

Nope, Denmark, so not that far away. Maybe we’re enjoying the same weather-benefits from unknown weather phenomenon haha 😛

At least that means you have an excuse to watch dramas? 😉 Wish I could, but too many distractions outside, I’d never get any writing done out there lol.

          1
          1

Yes probably, I love how it’s such a massive deal to us to get 25 degrees in summer lol

I have SO many excuses to watch dramas but I’m almost successfully restraining myself hahaha. Are you doing a literature course? I actually really miss doing writing/English literature, the subjects that I do right now don’t really analyse anything and it’s all memory work

            1
            0

Ikr, we had 27 degrees one day and I was shocked haha. Now it’s back to rain -.- Which is sad, but also awesome, because then at least it’s easier to focus. And if it keeps up I won’t feel bad about the massive kdrama-binge coming this weekend lol.

I can’t really seem to focus on dramas rn, even when taking a break, so I’ve just been watching random yt vids and variety shows when I crash at night lol.
I’m a Comparative Lit student, so except for some philosophy ones and a couple of language ones, it’s all lit courses 😛
          What are you studying? ^^

          1
          1

The pros and cons of rain when the pros aren’t really pros😛 But I’m so with you bc it makes it not so easy to give in haha

I’m watching mainly live shows so I don’t feel as bad bc 4 hours over a week is okay right?🙄 Same though, variety shows are so easy to stop when you want so I don’t really binge on them which is good- problem with YouTube is i watch one vid and there’s always other suggestions and then I find myself watching like ten😒

Sounds v fancy, is it still the whole analysing texts and books? I’m doing biology and chemistry and it’s draining the life out of me lol

            1
            0

I would say you should. It’s a refreshing drama, and it was the drama that brought me back to korean drama and dramabeans. I’d got so bored with the same dramas that kept churning out and had effectively stopped watching Korean dramas totally for 1 1/2 years until Cheese. I didn’t know what was going on, but it made the news, and out of curiosity, I went in when it was airing episode 14. I didn’t read any of the recaps, nothing, but I knew there was some controversy going on, didn’t care, just started watching and was hooked immediately. Round about episode 8, I think, I felt there was something funny going on, but I continued watching, because like kaybee says, Yoo Jung was so much of a presence he was there even when he was not – does that make sense to you? Watch it, it’s so different, and funny, and quirky, I love it and I consider it one of my most favorite dramas despite the shortcomings.

      1
      2

I admit I have read up a lot about the controversy and I’m hoping that won’t affect the way I view CITT when I watch it. I feel like I’ll be definitely looking out for the episode where it started to ‘go wrong’.

I don’t really know much about the plot (which I usually search up before hand lol) so I’m excited to see what that brings. Tbh I could watch a drama just for its characters so if they’re complex and interesting enough, I wouldn’t really mind if the plot is shocking

        1
        0

Oh yay, someone else who agrees! 😀

I’m glad it’s not just my imagination and that someone else noticed that presence-thing too! Also, it’s one of my absolute favorites too ^^

Just realized that this is in fact your post @YY and that @mahoilam and I completely hi-jacked it! I’m so so sorry! Hope you didn’t keep getting annoying notifications of things unrelated to you :O

It’s so easy to forget whose post you’re chatting away on, because the notifications just take you to the specific reply, not the top of the post/comment thread. Again, I really hope you weren’t inconvinienced!

On a sidenote, did you see the new MxM eps and that kiss? It’s definitely better than the one you complained about in this post! 😛
