When I first started watching kdramas, I got so confused on character names because they would translate “oppa,” “unni,” “agassi,” etc. as the character name. I still find interesting translations like “bro” or “ma’am” lol
So true! I would’ve liked if they just wrote Oppa and Unnie per se instead of making it seem like the characters are being called by name which is actually rare in Korea. Big bro or big sis is closer in meaning
Whahahaha I brushed it off before as me having possible ear problems. But heck now that I realize it’s hilarious. Also, when they add -ya or -ah in the name. Ex: Bok-joo-ya Joon-hyung-ah
I’m like is that also a title? 😅
Have you read JB and GF’s online book? There’s an entire chapter called You can call me names but you can’t call me by my name. Pretty much sums up every drama ever. Even if they don’t call each other titles, they call each other nicknames! Even saved in their mobiles! Most recently in BotWG, SSK saved NJH as Water Ghost 😂
Thanks for the link!
I can’t remember where I heard/read this (a podcast I think) but they had talked about needing to write the second part but writing the first part was such a process that they hadn’t gotten around to continuing it.

Daebak! 😊 This is why translating is treacherous.

Same. I get that newbies will be like “huh?” but then that will just get them interested in what that is and Google it like I did lol

Same! I was also like are all the names pronounced the same? I don’t get how Kim Boong-do and Han Ji-hoon both sound like “oppa” lol

Lol I could never quite catch what they were saying at the end. I assumed it was part of their “last” name.

You could practically go through a whole drama without actually hearing the names of the characters! 🙂
