Hardcore sageuk fan here. 😀 List of sageuks that have left a deep and lasting impression on me:
1) Dae Jang Geum
2) Jejoongwon
3) Seven Day Queen
4) Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People
5) Hwang Jin Yi
And yes, two recently aired dramas have already earned spots in my personal “Top 5 Most Influential/Most Impressive Dramas Watched So Far” list. They’re just that good. 😊 As for the others, #1 on the list, DJG, was my first K-drama ever, so it holds a very special place in my heart for that reason. It’s also a very well-made drama and usually considered to be one of the dramas that kicked off the Korean Wave. You could even say it’s a classic. #2 on the list, Jejoongwon, was introduced to me by Thundie of Thundie’s Prattle. I’ll just say that it’s now an older show, but it’s very heartwarming. In fact, both #2 and #3 on my list are shows about love. They’re not purely romantic dramas. But they are filled with love: familial love, brotherly love, love between friends, love for one’s country/a loyal subject’s love for the king that he serves, and yes, deep romantic love. #4 on this list, well, I imagine most of you have heard about it already. Now that I think about it though, it’s about love too. It’s about good vs evil and helping the poor. (Actually, the Joseon under class features heavily in #2, Jejoongwon, as well XD). Anyway, I also loved Rebel as an artistic drama, and it’s sort of connected to #5 Hwang Jin Yi in that way. So yeah, I love my gorgeously artistic sageuks about love, about family, and about unconventional characters that often live outside of the palace.
Hi @mango! As I elaborated in the “reply” comment above yours, Jejoongwon is a drama about love and loyalty. It’s much more than a love story though. It’s about familial love, brotherly love, love for the people, love for one’s country, love for a people who are not your own, and of course, there’s some really sweet romantic love involved too. So I thought it was a really heartwarming show. If you ignore the not-so accurate depiction of medicine, it’s pretty historically accurate too. Most of the characters were real people. Even Hwang Jung, the lowly butcher turned doctor was based on a real person named Park Seo Yang! If you’d like more info, you should check out blue’s “A Tribute to Jejoongwon” and, of course, Thundie’s posts. Bear in mind though, that our sentiments are pretty similar. If you want to watch a deeply moving show about how real people dedicated themselves to medical service in late 19th-early 20th century Korea, then Jejoongwon is a drama that will touch and stay with you. If you don’t like that kinda stuff, well, you could give it a try anyway? 😀
That’s the kind of drama I was looking for. Portraying the people and their life in this area adding real figures is a bonus. Thanks a lot for your explanation 😀
Sure! It’s an older show, and not as gorgeous as Seven Day Queen, but my memories of watching it have stayed with me for years now. Let me know if you need help finding it since it’s been so underrated, @mango. Otherwise I hope you enjoy it!
here’s a link to a site if you need it: http://mydramalist.com/796-jejoongwon/episodes. The videos are low quality, but the subs are pretty good. It used to be more readily available on hulu and Dramafever, but that’s unfortunately no longer the case (unless you have premium, @mango?)
