Drama Pet Peeve: When they have the obviously 30+ year old leads play their teenage self in flashbacks. Usually with a terrible wig. Please just hire another actor.
I vacillate between hating it and just finding it hilarious because it’s so absurd. I don’t mind it when it’s played for comedy in something like Fight My Way, but when it’s done seriously, it pulls me out of the story.
I think the most absurd example of this that I have seen so far was in Master – God of Noodles. They made some of the extras really old as well…to try and make it not so obvious? It failed. Iol
Well, in my head, I still look exactly the same as I did when I was in high school. Despite being well over 30. I rationalize the flashbacks that way — that they are memories of people who have always looked the way they do now. At least in their heads.
That’s a nice way to see it, but I don’t think that’s ever the intent of the PD when they execute it like that. If so, I’d rather they keep the character in their modern clothes and hairstyle so it’d be clear that the characters themselves are “visiting” the past.
I understand the move when they need the current actor’s skills in the scene and they don’t want to risk a young rookie actor ruining the scene, but there are young actors that can act, so why not use them? The alternative requires too much suspension of belief sometimes.

I like your point about giving young actors a chance. That is an excellent way to give rookies experience. And wouldn’t require mental gymnastics to make it plausible. 😉

Agreed! The girls’ wigs in Fight My Way were ridiculously big! So funny.
