Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

Life has been a bit chaotic lately, and that means I’ve not only fallen behind on shows I’m watching, but also haven’t been able to pick up as many new shows as I’d otherwise like to. But there are some promising new titles in this bunch, and I’m determined to get a taste of everything on my plate… soon… someday… –javabeans

Currently recapping: Seven Day Queen

Father Is Strange: Oh, thank goodness for a reprieve in Joong-hee’s angst! He’ll have some image cleanup on his hands with the latest kerfuffle, but at least his inner anguish gets a break, especially knowing that the attraction is mutual! I don’t envy any of the Byuns for when the truth finally comes out, but if it had to be anyone, I’m glad it’s levelheaded Unni who’s putting the pieces together, whom I can trust to be responsible with her discoveries.

Criminal Minds: It seems this is poised to become a big hit, and I liked what I saw and found it compelling once the case really got going, but I did have a few mitigating thoughts: First, that it actually didn’t look as sleek and fancily produced as I expected it to, coming from this director and tvN; second, that it was so straightforwardly procedural that I found it a bit dry and actually wished for more K-drama melo excitement (I know!); and third, that if it weren’t for Lee Jun-ki and Sohn Hyun-joo (Moon Chae-won to a lesser extent), I wouldn’t be nearly as into it. The Lee Jun-ki magic really makes up for a lot, though; whenever he’s onscreen I feel particularly sucked in, and then the magnetism sort of dissipates once he’s offscreen again. At least there’s a simple solution to that, though! ALL LEE JUN-KI, ALL THE TIME.

Reunited Worlds: Watching this drama sort of feels like how you might feel after you’ve had your heart broken, recovered from it, and then find yourself potentially falling again. By which I mean: I’m a little scared to fall in love because I have the sinking feeling Yeo Jin-gu might not be alive at the end of it, and I feel like I’m going to be a blubbery mess if this drama resolves the way I think it may. And yet, I can’t help myself from feeling drawn in anyway. I suddenly feel a lot of sympathy for those stupid moths and their flames.

Bride of the Water God 2017: I like the small character interactions and introspective moments, but I feel like the mythology is trying to be pretty ambitious and it’s not quite coming through. Don’t get me wrong, I like that the mythos seems complex and deep—I just think it’s being conveyed in choppy bursts of information, enough to make me wonder if I accidentally skipped a scene where they explained everything. If they were just a little less cryptic, I think it would do them a world of good.

School 2017: Ugh, I love the rebel bad boy. Why do I always love the rebel bad boy? I’m so onboard with all of the developments this week—the heartbreaking backstory of the bus crash and the broken bromance, the budding friendship between our heroine and each of the boys, the blatant adorable flirting, Teacher’s lonely one-man demonstration against the stupid system. The first week was breezy, but now I’m super invested.

Falsify: That was a slick premiere episode. The corruption plot is like the 700th one this year alone, but I really like the journalism angle on this one. It beats lawyers and cops, at least in terms of freshness, and it has a great David and Goliath setup between the respectable (but totally corrupt) national newspaper and the trashy (but actually legit) tabloid run out of a storage container.

The Best Hit: The time travel made no sense on this show. But I was so smitten with Da-bong that my brain just sort of glossed over the big holes and smoothed out the jagged edges, leaving me with warm fuzzy feelings about the drama as a whole. For whatever reason, I was especially attached to this show and its goofy characters, and I found myself looking forward to it every week, so I’m particularly sad to see it end. Maybe I’ll have to go back and start watching 1 Night 2 Days to ease the loss.

Duel: You know, I was legitimately surprised that the finale was so satisfying. I guess I expected it to fail me in some way, but it was poignant and thoughtful and thrilling, and it wrapped up the clones’ stories with so much heart. What a breakout for Yang Se-jong, who just ran away with the show, especially as the tortured, broken Evil Clone. That character deserves a prequel.

HeadsNo2

Forest of Secrets: That twist! My heart! Shi-mok! It’s so rare for a show to hinge on one mystery and be able to carry that through to the end without giving it away, but Forest trusts its audience and knows we’re along for the ride. What gets me about this drama every single week is that it’s so singular in its vision, and everything—everything—that happens on screen is in service to the story being told, and it’s a damn compelling story indeed. What a week for this show. What a show!

Falsify: I don’t know if it’s corruption fatigue, but this show feels a bit phoned-in, at least plotwise. I feel like I’ve seen this show before, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I don’t feel compelled by what’s happening on screen. It’s a classic revenge/takedown scheme with a good actor at its core, but I’m waiting to see what else it has to offer.

The King Loves: Ho-hum politicking, extreme third wheeling.

Reunited Worlds: Maybe my disconnect with this show is that I just can’t buy the lack of gravitas whenever Hae-sung reunites with someone who thought he was dead, and life just resumes as normal afterward. It feels so out of step with how you’d think that reunion should go—not that there should be wailing and gnashing of teeth, but if you saw someone who died back and in the flesh, would you just be like, “Cool, stay at my house, eat my food, let’s not question how any of this is happening?” I find the fantasy elements interesting, but I feel like the show is deliberately pulling its emotional punches, which seems like a missed opportunity. Then again, maybe that’s not what this show is about, and I’m focusing on the wrong thing.

Criminal Minds: I like it so far. I don’t love it yet, and I’m a little over the hotheaded detective type , but the directing is slick and the mood is dark enough to appeal to my dark soul.

odilettante

New Journey to the West: Life has been extra busy for me the past month, which means I’ve fallen veeerrry far behind on all the dramas I’d previously been watching. When face with the choice to pick-up one of the many dramas that have already ended or start fresh with one of the many dramas that have recently premiered, I fled to the comforting arms of variety which demands nothing from me except to enjoy some celebrities playing goofy games in pretty scenery. Kyuhyun has become my favorite member, so I’m pleased that Na PD managed to film another season with him before Kyuhyun enlisted. I’m also thrilled that the boys have managed to outsmart the production crew this season, first by Mino perfectly selecting the expensive sport cars in the spin-for-a-prize, and then by Kyuhyun actually winning the soju game (Na PD’s reaction to both of those incidents is priceless!). I celebrated along with the guys when they finally obtained all seven dragon balls, and I hope there’s actually going to be a Winner Youth Over Flowers!

chickachunga

Forest of Secrets: Episode 14 was one of the finest hours of television I’ve ever seen and that final airport chase scene? Wow, it was the airport chase scene to end all airport chase scenes. I just sat in my room, in awe, and applauded after the episode ended — who does that?! We all knew you-know-who would get caught, but it was such a thrilling moment watching him run for his life and then waver with his clenched fist held up high, unable to strike Yeo-jin as if the finality of the whole situation struck him in that precise moment. And that sweater scene where memories of Eun-soo suddenly flooded Shi-mok’s mind was so beautifully simple and devastating. I bow at the altar of writer Lee Soo-yeon’s brilliance. Can you believe this is her first drama series? Anticipation is at peak level for the final two episodes even though I’m nowhere near ready to bid the show farewell!

The King Loves: Meh. I tried it out. As expected, very pretty at times, but nothing special (plot-wise or performance-wise) so far. Maybe I’ll watch one more week to see if anything interesting happens.

Laica

Currently recapping: Forest of Secrets

Father Is Strange: Finally, Mi-young knows the truth, and we can have adorable couple moments without the ickyness and guilt! I can understand why Joong-hee feels so reluctant to take decisive action and reveal Mom and Dad’s crimes, but I’m also tired of all the secrets, so I’m glad Hye-young is on the case. If anyone can help untangle this mess and hopefully figure out a way to minimize the damage for all involved, it will be her. I just hope Joong-hee’s confrontation with the sleazy director doesn’t blow up in his face in a really bad way—the poor guy has enough to deal with already. Also, Ra-young’s low-key war with Chul-soo’s dad is hilarious. I agree with Young-hee—he should just give up and accept her as his future daughter-in-law (and put her on track for a sales manager).

Sassy Go Go: Friends have been recommending this to me for years, and I finally found time to watch it. I loved everything about this one. It perfectly exemplifies what I love most about high school dramas: the intense emotional relationships, whether romantic or platonic; the feeling of powerless in the face of an unjust adult world; the all-in, fearless way teenagers can have of going after their dreams and believing in their friends, regardless of what tomorrow may hold. I already loved Jung Eun-ji and Ji Soo, but now I love them even moooooore, and I’m adding Lee Won-geun to my collection of puppies! ♥

S.O.S. more F.O.S. pleeeeeeeeasssse!!!!

This show is so good that I think I will be watching less crime/thriller/legal dramas henceforth. The writing, directing and acting are almost flawless and very unlike your typical kdrama. I think I have developed an allergy(or worsened) to tropes, flashy directing and overacting which I found in Criminal Minds.

I'm behind in all other dramas, it's been a busy week and feeling strangely lethargic with my drama watch.

Hiii! Hope you're all enjoying the weekend.

So I binged all of Reunited Worlds in one night. However I watched it on some random site since I couldn't find it on Viki or Dramafever. It seems like a lot of new shows are not present on those two domains. Anyone else having trouble finding Reunited Worlds, Criminal Minds and Falsify on Dramafever and Viki? Can anyone kindly explain why, if they happen to know? I'm curious.

Falsify & Criminal Minds are on Kocowa.com. They seem to have exclusive access to new SBS, KBS & MBC shows in my part of the world. And it isn't easy to catch their stuff without subscribing.
(More on my fan wall in a day or 3 when I finish typing up my rants)

Watching Reunited Worlds and Woman of Dignity.
I do not agree about Reunited Worlds, I do find it realistic that his friends do not question his return, they are happy that he is back.
Lookout, Solomon's Perjury and The Good Wife.

Absolutely loving this wave of dramas so far, so much fun!!

Duel: I never watched this show because it had a tight plot, awesome directing and a fantastic cast (although the cast was pretty great, and YSJ blew them all out of the water imo). But I did watch it for the heartfelt story at the center, of the two clones who wanted a chance as humans and the father who'd do anything to save his daughter. It was almost refreshing (in an odd, totally corrupt sort of way) to see the detectives completely throw justice out the window and do whatever the heck they wanted. And while the finale was kind of a mess for me, I was pleasantly surprised by some of amazing emotional beats they got in there (hands down one of my favorite "final scenes" I've watched in kdrama, those are hard to get right.)

Secret Forest: I absolutely love this show to bits, even for all it can sometimes feel a bit too subtle, if that's allowed. And while I don't think I'd put in in the same class Signal (that's a phenomenon I'd like to see repeated someday, though), it was definitely a solid watch. I'm excited for finale week, hence the raw episode playing in the background while I type this...

Criminal Minds: I can already tell I'll be watching this through my fingers, or at least at the edge of my seat. It feels like an interesting mix of a Western format procedural and and the Kdrama style, and I'm waiting to see how it develops and settles into itself before I make any final judgements. Javabeans was totally right though--if they just give LJK all the screentime, I'm in. ^^

School 2017: So... this is my first introduction to the School series (I know, as an LJS fangirl I feel completely remiss in having not watched School 2013 before now. But now I find myself conflicted--do I try to watch the two simultaneously, do I watch 2013 right after this? Do I put 2017 on hold until I've seen 2013? Either way, I'm liking School 2017 in a way I never have liked School dramas before, so that's a good thing. I think it does indeed have something to do with the bad boy on the motorbike (or maybe even just the bike... have I ever mentioned I love motorcycles?)

Man Who Dies to Live: Well, if I had found subs, I was gonna give this show one more week to prove itself... but whatever, I won't miss it if I don't.

Falsify: Yup, I think I love Namgoong Min. I'm seeing some differences from his earlier, also zany characters, and that alone is enough to bring me back next week to see how this all fills out. Also I love the balance they've struck so far between serious action and comedy, I hope they can keep it up.

Reunited Worlds: Totally my drama crack right now. You can't give me YJG, a supernatural plotline, and a broken family/friend circle in need of healing and expect me not to love it. I absolutely adore everything about this show, except perhaps the effects when he uses some of...

Omg i died at Na PD's reaction when Minho perfectly selected the sports cars. He even went on his knees to apologize for underestimating them LOL. Oh man, did this man not learn his lesson not to make crazy bets after Kyuhyun hit the ball over 40x and resulted in filming ending that day?? ????? NJTTW is hilarious and the reason I look forward to Tuesdays. It makes me so sad how short the season itself is, especially since if they film a season 5 kyuhyun won't be in it. I'm going to miss having my weekly kyu dose once this season is over but hopefully this show will continue for the next 2 years and they will fullfill Kyu's wish ?.

I am only watching "Bride of Habaek", and I agree with javabeans about the mythology aspect of this show. I find that the mythology aspect is getting convoluted now with the introduction of minor gods (just weird and offputting, and serves no purpose aside from making the mythos confusing/forced/convoluted), and to a lesser extent half gods (I hope Hu Ye isn't turned into a villain, because he is interesting and has been mistreated).

The rules of the mythos aren't explained clearly to the viewer, and once a question is answered, more popup.

However I am still really enjoying this show because of the H/h fascinating story-line and lovely moments (and I hope for a happy ending, like a fairy-tale). I really hope that the story starts to move forward on this front. I am also interested in Hu Ye and Bi Ryeom as characters, and Mura too (since she has started to grow on me).

Forest of Secrets and Seven Day Queen are set to become all-time favs! I wish I had the time to rewatch both shows in full before the finales. That might work out for 7DQ. FoS, on the other hand...every week this show has me suspicious of new possible twists and wanting to go back to find hints in previous episodes to support my theories. I want to do that one last time with it before it ends, but the anticipation to watch the final resolution might be too great!!!

Here's how I feel for everything else so far:

The Best Hit - Getting caught up. 4 episodes until the end! I have conflicted, but mostly lovely, happy feelings for it.

Father is Strange - Finally, finally got to the good stuff. I've been enjoying this, but it feels like I got so much more invested in these last 10 episodes (completely zipped through them!) and suddenly I'm feeling all this anticipation for certain developments. I had given up on getting caught up on this show while it aired, but now I'm desperate for the next episode.

School 2017 - Ahhhh, here we go. Starting to really get into this, despite the flaws here and there. Love the characters!

The King Loves - I really just sit back and enjoy this one. Something about the way the love triangle is set-up so that the entitled (though charming) hero doesn't get the girl just tickles me and I'm amused to see how it plays out.

I'm saving Criminal Minds and Falsify to start next week along with Strongest Deliveryman. I'm also hoping to marathon Reunited Worlds at the halfway mark. I'm having such mixed feelings for this show, as both JB and Heads capture different reactions I'm having. I'm continuously feeling drawn to it, but something's also off for me too? It's really annoying, lol, and I'm hoping I'll get over it soon. I so want to love this wholeheartedly and think it has so much potential.

Only watching 2 shows atm:
1. Father Is strange : I cried buckets watching the scenes when Joong Hee's crying. His talk with the dad and his confession to Mi Young. Usually you're happy during a confession part but here his is clouded with so much uncertainty and sorrow of their circumstances. If JH decided to not revealing the dad, he'll remain to be half brother to Mi Young and then how can they be a couple. I desperately want them to date asap. His smile when he saw her happy was like sunshine. He's been gloomy and tight-faced for ages already and I want goofy JH to come back like NOW. Show, pls be good to them!

2. BOTWG - The theories of who is who and what is what and how is how are flying all around in the forum room that makes my head spinning. I am trying not to speculate much and just keep my focus on Habaek-SoAh's sweet slow journey to romance which is really endearing and heart-fluttering. Habaek's started to smile more when he's with SoAh and SoAh is letting herself basking in his attention eventhough both know the time and their circumstances won't be so favourable of them. I'm praying hard for a happy ending...

Laica: Glad you finally saw Sassy Go Go! I really loved the main trio in that show!!

Bride of the Water God: I love the interactions between Habaek and Soah. Huye's turning out to be more interesting now that we have a glimpse of the backstory. I really wanna see Habaek regaining his powers soon. Roller coaster Habaek-nim is hilarious! Reminds me of Celebrity Romance with Jisoo! ???

The King Loves: Not loving this show, but it gives me something to watch Siwannie in. I guess I'm waiting for more plot development and how the besties may become estranged due to romantic and political rivalry.

Criminal Minds: LJG!! SHJ!! Need I say more? I love the cast and already feel that they did a good job choosing Korean actors for their American counterparts. I enjoyed the first week of ep's and liked getting to know some of the team's backstories, which I'm sure would shed more light to their character development as the series goes on. I'm so happy to find a good Wed-Thur drama to watch and can't wait for more!

I watched the first two episodes of Criminal Minds and it was well... pretty underwhelming. I really liked the cast with LJG and MCW but I felt that even their acting was pretty awkward. And the editing was choppy and bad. Also I felt like the writing wasn't very good and things were poorly researched, especially the profiling. Am I the only one? Maybe my expectations were a bit too high because right now this show just looks like your average (or rather mediocre) crime drama. Which is so sad too because I was really looking forward to seeing LJG in a modern drama again

I have checked out several dramas.
King Loves: Seems plot is weak and Yoona's acting is same as before not better or interesting.
My sassy girl: Beautiful to look at and medium interesting, haven't watched last few episodes. Got kinda of bored.
Bride of the water god: I have watching. Nam Joo Hyuk is hot there and Shin Se Kyung is so beautiful and less irrirating than before. (Not very big fan of her). Too bad there is nothing interesting about So Ah. I like Moo Ra and Bi Ryeom, totally rooting for them. they are so cool and chic.
7 day queen: Drama is good. Was totally for a while. I am almost at the last 2 episodes i think. but nothing interesting happens than king is stupidly going after Yeok and Chaek Kyung crying in every episode.
Reunited worlds: i love Yeo Jin Goo and Lee Yeon Hee. I am pretty much invested in this healing drama. cant wait for next episodes.
School 2017: It isnt an engaging drama and characters arent much interesting other than class president.
Dramas to watch: Forest of secrets

Just my opinion as someone who thought the US version was pretty much a standard procedural with the difference being the profiling which - even in the original - is totally ridiculous. (or so says my sister the cop.) I mean we wouldn't have a criminal on the street if it was that fool proof. I like these type shows because they tend to be an easy watch, but I do think people are expecting way more as they are comparing to Forest of Secrets which I love but is a totally different type of show. I'm hoping that we get a lot more of the team interaction, even more than the US version throughout the drama or else, yes, it will just be a standard mystery-a-week show.

The King Loves:
I find myself much more invested in this show than I originally thought I would be, tbh I started watching it purely out of boredom, but it's got me! The actors are beautiful of course, so are the setup and the clothes and ornaments. The show began in a pretty mundane way, as I expected, but it's not boring but funny and refreshing, which is good (and the child actors were also pretty amazing). As it goes on I find that it has a plot! That is even interesting! Between all the romance and bromance there's real politics going on and the characters react FAST at times to twist the fate in a favourable direction, this is something I really didn't expect from this show. If it can keep up the romance, bromance, comedy AND the political threads alltogether, it might just become my favourite show of the year!

Reunited Worlds:
Once again, watching for Yeo Jin Goo. And I still believe that it's a bad sign I'm watching dramas for the actors instead of being amazed by the actor because of the way he acted in a good drama. Reunited worlds is as beautifully colorful and sommery as the previews showed us, the plot of Sun Hae-Sung returning from the dead after 12 years is of course also true. But the rest! Is pretty dissapointing. I don't feel the pain of those left to live without him, nor the impact of his revival to the world, nor the mystic vibe I was expecting to be feeling. It seems that things are already pretty clear when the drama has barely started. His oldest brother was probably the real culprit, and for lack of real blood relations, abandoned the family when things went downhill. The lives of his other siblings are already ruined, I don't see how he could set any of this right anymore. Gosh they even made his youngest brother have a child on top of being without proper education or a job of any kind. It's so messed up and if they just make everything perfect in the end for the sake of it, I'm going to be mad. Live decisions gone terribly wrong in your youth are not easily rectified decades later. And what about her being an alcoholic? Is that over already that easily? And she keeps drinking here and there without problems? The plot is really a mess.
I don't feel the romance, I don't feel the bromance, I don't feel the second lead. If I think about it, the deepest impression I've got from this drama is actually HOW could Hae-Chul have gotten a girl pregnant when he has not means to feed himself at just over 20??? WHAT was he thinking and WAS he thinking at all?

I dropped Father is Strange after ep 38, but I still check out clips for ra young-cheol soo and mi young-jong hee. Aghh, it has always been a trouble for me to watch something that has over 24 ep.

Any recommendation on what should I watch next?

Its hard to watch any other drama when you are watching Forest of Secret. The directing , writing , acting and the Cinematography is so well done that it makes some of them look like home made videos. Before i would let some dramas go away with weird camera work and descent acting chalking it up to kdrama charm but now i cant help but compare.
And saying that, Criminal Minds was an utter disappointment especially episode 2.

Father is strange--- I get that the father and mother are ashamed of what they did, but... can't they see that poor actor needs a big hug and a family? Why no explanation and why no further welcoming him into their family? They act like embarrassed kids rather than adults who messed up. I'm yelling -- talk to him, just talk to him -- LOL!

Father is strange : i enjoyed this drama so much. At first i didn have expectation towards this drama because i never really enjoyed family drama before but i found myself watched 12 eps in almost one sit lol now when its nearing the end i can feel my tears already ?

Reunited worlds : gosh the acting!!!!! I would've dropped this in the 1st ep if not for yeo jingoo and an interesting plot. Fortunately, the acting is still quite bearable for me so i dont think i'll drop this drama anytime soon.

Criminal Minds : i'm actually quite an avid fan of the original criminal minds so when i heard that there will be a korean remake for this, i cant help but being skeptical since korea is known to be sucks at remakes. Well i still gave it a try and its not as bad as i thought it'd be lol so i'll continue watching this for now

Falsify : only into ep 2 of the drama and i still couldnt find anything unique or something that would impress me. As a fan of legal drama, i found this drama a bit weak compared with the previous ones that has been aired such as whispers, defendant and secret forest. So i think i'll put this drama on hold until i dont have any good currently airing dramas to watch

As for variety shows, i'm currently watching Knowing Brothers, New Journey to the West 4, 2 days 1 night, Island Trio (lol i didnt know Yonghwa was that hilarious)

Am I the only one who doesn't like Lee Yeon Hee's acting in Reunited Worlds? It's too bland and flat. It's not just yeon hee's acting but the story itself is a bit bland like how can the story not find it surprising (actors were only surprised on the first meeting) that Hae Sung just got raised from the dead? I agree with Headsno2, I can't connect with this drama. Cries.
