Forest of Secrets: Episode 13
by SailorJumun
The special unit has dealt with their fair share of victories and losses, and have always managed to stay afloat somehow. But as long as they’re around, they’ll remain a threat to those they’re trying to capture, and their enemies know it. But when loss strikes, will it galvanize our team, or will it be enough to break them?
EPISODE 13 RECAP
Our investigation team is in high spirits and they snap a few pictures to commemorate the evening. Everyone is all smiles except for Shi-mok (of course) and Section Chief Yoon, who’s still got that chilling look in his eyes.
They all get back to drinking, while Gun wanders off to join Yeo-jin and Shi-mok. He hesitantly admits that he’d seen the footage of Chief Kim and Ga-young in the hotel. Yeo-jin’s eyes narrow as he continues that he’d searched her computer for the footage and sent it to Chief Kim.
Yeo-jin is understandably upset and Gun apologizes, saying that the chief had convinced him that sending a copy of the file wouldn’t really hurt anyone.
Furthermore, Gun continues defensively, he didn’t think it was a big deal since the chief technically didn’t kill anyone; it was just because of one girl. Yeo-jin looks at him incredulously, asking if he seriously thought that that made it okay.
“Is that how he used it?” Shi-mok wonders out loud, thinking back to the “gift” that had been on Chief Secretary Lee’s desk. Gun sighs and asks if they believe Chief Kim could be the culprit. And if that’s so, Gun asks if he helped a murderer.
Clerk Choi remembers Chief Kim’s desperate, panicked state when he’d thought she was Ga-young. On top of that, she says that Kim must’ve been especially terrified to have come to Gun for help, so the team thinks he may not be capable of murder. Gun is relieved to hear that. “Then the chief has nothing to do with that ’07’ thing, right?” he asks.
Ack! Yoon’s eyes flick up at that. Eun-soo asks what this “07” business is, and Yeo-jin explains that Ga-young had given them that one clue and that she could’ve seen the numbers when she was kidnapped.
Clerk Kim assures everyone that it’s only a matter of time before they capture this kidnapper. Yoon agrees with a smile, though it drops as his gaze wanders back to Eun-soo.
After they wrap up the party, the team breaks up to go their separate ways. When Eun-soo is asked if she has a ride home, Yeo-jin smiles knowingly and jumps in to suggest that Shi-mok drive her.
The ride back is silent until Eun-soo asks if Shi-mok went straight to the party from work. When he confirms that he did, she says that she’d stopped by his apartment and that she’d heard someone open his door when she was in the elevator.
She finds it even stranger that the man who’d followed her out had had an umbrella when it wasn’t raining. Shi-mok asks if the man did anything and she answers that he just left.
After a beat, Shi-mok then asks if she can take the subway from here. She seems a bit disappointed, but agrees to be let out. (I’m a little nervous to have her go off alone though.)
Shi-mok returns to his apartment and heads straight for the bedroom, only to stop when he sees something in the darkness.
Shi-mok whirls around and quickly scours the rest of the apartment for any intruders. When he sees that it’s empty, he turns on the lights to reveal one of his suits hanging off the ceiling by the tie, the jacket torn apart. He stares at the suit curiously and immediately calls Yeo-jin and Gun over.
While Gun photographs the evidence, Yeo-jin sweeps the area for any wiretaps. She comes across the drawings she’d given Shi-mok and smiles at the fact that he kept them all this time. (Aww.) The three of them later search through the CCTV footage and sure enough, they see the man with the umbrella that Eun-soo had told Shi-mok about.
Gun wonders if the man had left the suit as some kind of warning. Yeo-jin remembers a movie about a general that had snuck into the king’s quarters to cut a lock of his hair. After that, she says, the king was afraid of the general. She requests to obtain footage from the rest of the apartment block, with the intention to track down the mystery man’s escape route.
Yeo-jin and Gun worry about Shi-mok going back home, but as usual, he’s completely unfazed – he figures that the culprit wouldn’t come back. Still, the two watch with concern as he heads back alone. Gun offers to drive Yeo-jin home and she completely ignores him and walks away, ha. However, she turns back to look up at Shi-mok’s building.
In his apartment, Shi-mok looks up at where the suit had been, a thought bothering him: “Why did you only cut off a lock of my hair? You should’ve gone for my throat.” Before he can finish the thought, someone rings his doorbell – it’s Yeo-jin again, back with tea to help him sleep. Okay, double aww.
She starts to leave, but Shi-mok stops her and invites her in. They settle on the couch, where Yeo-jin asks if his mystery intruder could be the murderer. Since the tactics were completely different, she thinks that the intruder could be someone from Hanjo Group trying to scare him.
She also asks if he’d already known that it would happen. He assumes that she means the intrusion, but she clarifies that she’s referring to the almost-dissolution of the special unit. She figures that he must’ve known that tipping Sungmoon Daily would lead to repercussions. Shi-mok replies that he merely did what he had to do – they had to put a stop to Hanjo Group’s fraud somehow.
And in return, he tells her, he was able to get the identity of the whistleblower. He sends her the high school girl’s information and she agrees to question the girl about the man who’d sent her to Sungmoon. She says that she’ll sketch out the girl’s descriptions herself, and Shi-mok gives her this stern look before telling her to just take a composite sketch software. LOL.
He also tells her the three things the whistleblower had to have known: Secretary Chief Lee and CEO Park’s relationship, the marriage plans between Hanjo and Sungmoon, and the fact that Sungmoon’s CEO is still angry about the broken engagement.
And Shi-mok thinks that there are three people who fit all of that criteria: Chairman Lee, Chief Secretary Lee, and Lee Yeon-jae. Yeo-jin does think that all three carry a clear motive, but if one of them really were the culprit, why would they go out of their way to spare Ga-young? Before Shi-mok can answer, Yeo-jin notices how late it is and gets up to leave.
Meanwhile, Eun-soo is still mulling over the “07” clue. She remembers seeing the tattoo on Section Chief Yoon’s back but shakes her head, thinking it doesn’t make sense.
News breaks out that the government is refraining from buying the radar system, making it a tense morning at the Lee household. Chief Secretary Lee asks his father-in-law plans to do and the chairman calmly says that all he has to do is apologize. Still, Chief Secretary Lee calls the prosecutor general and tells him to get rid of the special unit once and for all.
The investigation team are happy to hear from the news that the Army Headquarters and the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office will be working together to reveal the truth. (Yeo-jin and Shi-mok even share an awesome high-five.) However, they’re shocked to hear that their investigation has supposedly “ended successfully” with the arrest of Chief Kim. They’re officially dissolved.
Section Chief Kang is looking anxious as he visits the prosecutor general’s office. And soon after, when he leaves, he’s looking a lot happier.
It’s time for Chairman Lee to face the press – in his usual professional manner, he apologizes for creating such a ruckus. However, he states that he did not know that the Ukrainian company was a subsidiary of Matsuyama’s company.
He continues that either way, he is still at fault for worrying the citizens of Korea. He gives one last big apology before bowing before all the reporters.
The investigation team clears out their office with heavy hearts. Shi-mok turns the whiteboard over to reveal his elaborate suspect board and everyone marvels at all the detailed findings. Shi-mok takes it all apart one by one and then turns to his team to sincerely thanks them for all their hard work.
They all file out, with Yeo-jin taking one last look at the office. They pack all their boxes into their cars and Shi-mok looks back at their building, followed by the others, and all that they’re forced to leave behind.
Yeo-jin and Gun return to Yongsan Police Station and discover that Soo-chan is no longer there – their team leader had posted an apology online for overlooking Kyung-wan’s abuse and as a result, Soo-chan was fired. A fellow officer sighs that Soo-chan had been working hard to assure his child with ADHD was taken care of abroad.
Yeo-jin finally gets ahold of the footage from Shi-mok’s neighborhood and she goes from video to video, tracking the man with the umbrella as he leaves the apartment complex and heads into the city. However, the man eventually walked out of CCTV view. Yeo-jin prints out the last location and decides to go from there.
The former investigation team return to the prosecutor’s office, running into a pensive Eun-soo in the hall. She greets them absently and wanders off, to the confusion of the team.
She stops to glance back at Section Chief Yoon, who stops where he is and starts to turn back. Eun-soo quickly escapes into her office, but Yoon has already seen her.
Shi-mok meets with Section Chief Kang to apologize for failing when Kang had stood up for him. Kang waves that aside and mentions that Chief Kim will be re-investigated soon, though it’s most likely that Kim didn’t commit murder.
While that may be true, Shi-mok does state that Kim did attempt murder and that they have Lee Yeon-jae as their witness. Kang tells him to just leave it alone since they already have enough evidence against Kim, but Shi-mok is determined to reveal everything.
Clerk Kim debates whether or not to relay to Shi-mok his findings of all the companies for which CEO Park acted as a broker. Clerk Choi suggests that they leave it all behind now that the special unit is over and done with.
Young Il-jae welcomes Shi-mok into his home and sits him down so they can talk. He tells Shi-mok that Chief Secretary Lee seems rather upset since the person he’d raised is now stabbing him in the back.
Lee had once told Young Il-jae that he’d found a promising new prosecutor – Shi-mok – who had rebelled against his higher-ups for wanting to cover something up. Lee had thought that if Shi-mok never changed, they could look forward to his accomplishments.
“You’re the one who stopped the weapon import, right?” Young Il-jae asks. He scoffs that the CEO of Sungmoon Daily hasn’t changed a bit, latching onto Shi-mok’s tip. Shi-mok notes that Young Il-jae knows about the relationship between Hanjo and Sungmoon.
Shi-mok then gets to the reason why he came – he tells Young Il-jae that that Chairman Lee must’ve hurt him because he was afraid. But what was Chairman Lee afraid of? Young Il-jae refuses to answer, saying that his family has had to suffer because of his work.
“‘A judicial officer will always be doomed to an unrequited love toward justice. It’s the ultimate ideal.’ That’s what you, Minister – no, Professor – said on the first day of prosecutor school,” Shi-mok reminds him. “You need to let me follow your teachings.”
Young Il-jae looks at Shi-mok and says that to him, justice is the safety of his family. He tells Shi-mok to leave and heads back into his bedroom. As Shi-mok calls out that he’ll be back, Young Il-jae glances down at the dresser where he’d hidden his USB.
Chairman Lee calls Secretary Woo into his office and tells him to find someone new for the plan – someone who isn’t like CEO Park. Secretary Woo agrees to do so and then informs the chairman that Shi-mok visited Young Il-jae.
Chairman Lee sighs that the warning Secretary Woo sent must’ve failed. And even though Young Il-jae swore not to talk, Chairman Lee is sure that if Shi-mok keeps prodding, Young Il-jae could make a reckless decision. The chairman tells his secretary that “it” must be in Young’s house and orders him to find it.
Yeo-jin finds the last location that the mystery intruder (who we now know was Secretary Woo) went and gets the footage from there. She sees that he got into a taxi, so she gets the license plate and contacts the driver. Apparently, the driver had dropped him off in an alley right after a subway station.
Yeo-jin heads over to Shi-mok’s office to show him a screenshot of the footage, but he doesn’t recognize the man. She also shows him the sketch she got from talking to the high school girl, the man’s face mostly covered by a mask. Shi-mok tells her that there’s one more person he thinks could be the whistleblower: Young Il-jae.
Young Il-jae knew about the relationship between Hanjo and Sungmoon, he had no real grudge against Ga-young (and would therefore spare her), and he benefitted the most from the special unit’s investigation. With all of this piled against him, Yeo-jin believes he does fit the bill.
All except for one thing, Shi-mok notes. Young Il-jae doesn’t have the determination to kill someone. After all, he had something against Chairman Lee and kept quiet about it for three whole years.
Before Yeo-jin can ask what Young Il-jae had against the chairman, there’s a knock on the door. Eun-soo comes in and Shi-mok urges her to sit down and take a look at the photos of his intruder.
Eun-soo confirms that it’s the same person she saw and asks if the intruder did anything. And curiously, Shi-mok tells her that nothing happened. She presses that something must’ve happened if he called her in like this, but Shi-mok denies it and tells her to go back to work.
When she leaves, Yeo-jin tells Shi-mok that he should treat Eun-soo well and he looks up, a little confused. “But I am treating her well,” he replies. Hmm.
As she walks back to her office, Eun-soo flashes back to moments before when she’d approached Shi-mok’s office. She’d heard Shi-mok and Yeo-jin talking about her father and Chairman Lee before knocking on the door and coming in.
Shi-mok tells Yeo-jin he’ll send Dong-jae the photos of the intruder when Clerk Choi comes in with news that a new chief prosecutor has just been announced. As Shi-mok heads out to greet the new chief prosecutor, he gets a call from a panicking Dong-jae.
Dong-jae tells Shi-mok that he doesn’t recognize the intruder, but that Shi-mok needs to stop sending him things like that. He knows that Chief Secretary Lee had told him and Secretary Yang different information to test him, which means that Lee could know he’s communicating with Shi-mok.
Shi-mok runs into Section Chief Yoon and they both head up to the chief prosecutor’s office together. Well, no wonder Section Chief Kang looked so happy earlier – Shi-mok and Yoon join the other section chief to congratulate the newly appointed Chief Prosecutor Kang.
Kang puts his arm around Shi-mok and throws the congratulations right back; he announces that Shi-mok is now the section chief of unit 3, which moves Yoon to the investigative unit.
Shi-mok doesn’t exactly seem excited about this, and neither do the other section chiefs. As they leave Kang’s room, the section chiefs grumble that the hierarchy is all messed up now that people are skipping ahead.
Shi-mok gets a call from Yeo-jin, saying that a reporter broke into Ga-young’s hospital room. Yoon sees Shi-mok’s face and assuming it’s about Ga-young, volunteers to go in his stead. Shi-mok gives him the okay and Yoon leaves with an ominous determination in his stride. Oh god.
Meanwhile, Chief Prosecutor Kang already has a new assignment for Shi-mok – in the United States. However, Shi-mok doesn’t want to accept this promotion. He wants to commit to the last ten days he has for his investigation.
Kang doesn’t see why Shi-mok is so determined to keep the promise of solving the case in two months when no one probably remembers. “It’s because I remember it,” Shi-mok states. “I’m sure the culprit remembers it too.” Kang sighs, seeing that any argument is futile. He tells Shi-mok to keep his promise then.
Shi-mok returns to the office to find that his clerks have already packed everything up. He interrupts their excited squeals and tells them to unpack since he’s not accepting the promotion. He then gets a call from Yoon saying that Ga-young isn’t at the hospital anymore; apparently, the hospital had told him that a nurse saw Ga-young’s mom leave with a man. Shi-mok tells Yoon to search the hospital while he goes out to visit Ga-young’s mom.
He then gets a call from Eun-soo asking to meet up, but he answers that they’ll have to do so later. He goes over to Ga-young’s mom’s house, but there’s no answer from either Ga-young or her mom.
Yeo-jin calls him and he starts to tell her about Ga-young, but Yeo-jin has even more shocking news: the body of a young woman was just found in Ga-young’s old apartment. Oh god oh god oh god.
Shi-mok heads straight for the crime scene, joining Yeo-jin, Gun, and their team leader. A body lies on the floor, covered by a sheet, and off to the side, there’s Yoon covered in blood and looking shaken.
Shi-mok turns to Yeo-jin and… oh no, that look on her face. Her eyes tear up as Shi-mok bends down to remove the sheet from the victim’s face…
…And there he sees Eun-soo, her throat brutally slit.
COMMENTS
Oh, wow. I don’t even know what to say; I actually got a little teary-eyed during those last few minutes. With the way Yoon had been glaring at Eun-soo, her death was definitely expected. She’d seen too much, and I’m guessing from her last call to Shi-mok that she’d probably figured out too much. But to actually see her lying there under that sheet… it made my heart stop. That room was filled with such tension and such sadness, and to have our worst fears confirmed like that just hit hard. Eun-soo was an amazing female character – an amazing character, period – and I hate that we had to lose her like that.
Eun-soo was always a bit of a question mark, but she was innocent enough that I didn’t have to worry about her actually hindering the case in any way. She had her own agenda, just as everyone else in this drama does, and I understood it. In her perspective, she had to be the hero of her family and swoop in to save them. So her acts of excessive eagerness and persistence never really bothered me (at least not too much). And I thought that it was her persistent behavior that made Shi-mok shut her out. He’d been consistently pushing her out of the investigation, even losing his cool and yelling at her when she got a little too far. At first, I read this as Shi-mok trying to keep her out of his way, but after this episode, I see that he was just trying to protect her.
I remember Young Il-jae saying that he was scared for his daughter because he trusted her, and I think that Shi-mok felt the same way. He knew that she was capable enough – that she was strong, feisty, and hardheaded. And with what she was going after, those traits were sure to put her in danger. We didn’t get much of a reaction from Shi-mok after her body was revealed, but I have a feeling this could really break him. He’s been fighting so hard to solve this case and to protect the people involved, so I can see him blaming himself for this terrible loss even though it’s not his fault. And then there’s Young Il-jae, who’s been working just as hard to ensure his family’s safety. With his daughter now dead, I wonder how he will handle the aftermath. Will he give up what he knows now that the one thing he’d been trying to protect is gone?
Along with feeling torn up about Eun-soo’s death, I’m still feeling the sting of Section Chief Yoon’s betrayal. (I liked him so much, dammit!) He has to be the one who killed her – unless the show is trying to play games with our minds again – so forgiveness is no longer an option. No matter what foul play was included in his child’s car accident, it in no way justifies taking an innocent life. And to take an innocent life just because she knew too much seems way too cruel. Sorry, Yoon, but you’re out of the team in my book. But I guess you never were a part of the team in the first place, were you?
Apart from that heavy ending, there were so many moments in this episode that I enjoyed. The scene of Shi-mok’s torn suit was especially chilling – when the suit was first revealed in the darkness, I honestly thought it was a body hanging there and I nearly screamed. I was so glad to have Yeo-jin come back and comfort him, even if he didn’t necessarily need the comfort. But this act really was a fail on Chairman Lee’s part. He was obviously trying to stir up fear in the wrong guy. Of course, seeing that Shi-mok was unmoved will just tempt the chairman to go beyond a warning. We’ve seen what the rich and powerful are capable of doing when they don’t get their way. And Shi-mok has given the chairman enough reasons to want him dead.
I was sad to see the special unit official disbanded, but my mood was immediately picked up when it was made obvious that disbandment wouldn’t stop them from continuing their investigation. We knew that Shi-mok and Yeo-jin would never give up (it was so satisfying to see Shi-mok deny his promotion), but it was also nice to see people like Clerk Kim have the urge to investigate further. And while Chief Prosecutor Kang seems to think it’s best to leave things behind, he still allowed Shi-mok to go and finish his mission. It’s hard to trust anyone in this show 100%, but I think Kang will make an excellent chief prosecutor. He was right in trusting Shi-mok because it feels like he’s this close to finishing his mission. Eun-soo was a smart girl, so I’m sure she did something or left something for Shi-mok to find. Hopefully, her death won’t be in vain – she could very well be our team’s next step to solving this case.

Can't lie, I had a feeling it was her before it was even revealed, before Yeo-jin even hinted it, I was prepared. But seeing her bloodied body on the floor broke even me, I can imagine how much it will hurt Shi-mok, I had guessed he was trying to protect her because of Young Il-jae's request before, made evident when he insisted to keep Eun-soo out. Ugh, and I cannot deal that part of our special investigation team member being the culprit. Why Yoon why?

This writer is so good with suspense that I'm not really sure it was Yoon who did it.
R.I.P Eun-soo <3.

He was shooting death daggers to her all episode long, I was convinced he did it, I just needed to know why because he doesn't strike me as someone who's willing to kill. And I truly believe his shaken appearance, he might be traumatized for killing her. Ugh, and I was just starting to warm up to our unconventional team!

I also can't be sure of him being the murderer in this case, even with the death daggers. We don't know enough about this side of his character to know whether he was plotting to kill her just yet.
It definitely feels like the show is setting us up to think that way, but, as far as I'm concerned, Eun-soo made two dangerous discoveries this hour that could have led to her demise. And, for some reason, Prosecutor Yoon losing a child has me leaning towards her discovery of her father's evidence against Lee Yoon-bum somehow being the true cause of her death. I have no idea why or how she ended up at Ga-young's though.
It's tragic when you think that involving her more in the team's recent discoveries could have actually prevented her from taking things into her own hands like this. Had Shi-mok been willing to give her more strict guidance and involve her in the case, she might have been able to learn to help the team without feeling the need to take control of matters. It's just that she was so unpredictable that Shi-mok had no way of knowing whether he could fully trust in her ability to keep her rash actions in check, even if he probably trusted in her in several other ways.

@chandler
Maybe she went to Ga-young's to see if she can identify Secretary Lee or Yoon as the person who kidnapped her.

Well said chandler..i doubt it was yoon who murdered eun soo.
Once she overheard the conversation on her father holding onto information think she may have done something rash which led to her death. The writer may have thrown a red herring by showing us yoon n' the death glares.

@kiara - Eun Soo had already shown Ga Young Sec Lee's photo when she visited her at the hospital, together with Dong Jae. Ga Young couldn't identify Sec Lee then, or Yoon either in a much earlier scene when Yoon was standing at the foot of her bed after police Chief Kim's rooftop scene.

I remember that she showed her Sec Lee's picture before but got no reaction from her.
I don't remember the incident with Yoon though.
(thanks for bringing it up. I guess I need to go back and rewatch)
I thought she might have gone there to ask if she recognized Yoon and if 07 was a tatoo etc.

When they said someone had died at Ga-young's mother's house, my first thought was Eun-soo, because she'd had a target on her head ever since the last episode. But yeah, even going into it with that expectation, it still didn't prepare me to deal with her actually being murdered

I guess we can never be prepared for death. So sad for Eun-soo and her family, she's their only child too, it must be devastating for her parents.

For me, it was the phone call cut short and the fact that Ga-young being the dead body would have been too expected for this show after all their searching. It's just so much more gutting to have it be Eun-soo, who Shi-mok had been cutting out and pushing aside.
It definitely didn't prepare me at all for the pain that actually seeing her lifeless caused me. Eun-soo really snuck up on me with how much I cared for her. Her tenacity, her vulnerability... every episode I felt like my opinion of her would shift. She was flawed, but just as passionate as Yeo-jin in her own way, so much so that suddenly seeing all the fight taken out of her like that was just too much for me to handle.
I have so many thoughts on the tragic relationship between her and Shi-mok, but I think I need to save it for the next recap because just thinking about it chokes me up too much right now. Something about her not getting that one basic thing you desire from the person you look up to: just a shred of acknowledgment-- THAT is what kills me about how things ended for her.

This, Eun Soo wasn't an easy person to like but you couldn't hate her either. She had flaws, glaring ones. She was manipulative, ruthless and smart enough to figure things out on her own. But the same Eun Soo could be naive, hopeful, vulnerable at times. And she was a fighter above all else, she didn't give up just because you would block her way. This is one thing she has in common with her sunbae. To see her life end in such violent manner and to see that life burn out just like that without any notice made me choke up. Because that is how reality works. Life is that unpredictable and it runs out unexpectedly at time and unfairly.
I applaud Shin Hye Sun, I always knew she was good. She played diverse characters in smaller roles since her debut. But her Eun Soo really made a mark. By all means, Shin Hye Sun has reason to be very proud for having shined brightly amid the stellar, experienced veterans. I wish to see her in bigger, better roles soon.

The way she was killed was brutal, like it was intentional to send a message to her father or Shi-mok.

I'm late here. 175 comments. Our show surely peaked at the right time.
I'm gonna speak for all of us viewers. The day Eun Soo's a reckless and desperate behaviour was revealed we all knew she gonna harmed one of the day. And she escaped tricky situations so her luck was vaining fast.
2nd - The writer was kind of giving vibes that Eun-Soo's time is ripe to be physically hurt.
3rd. Mr. Yoon eyeing Eun-Soo in last episode and scene in office + phone call. We all have common sense and we did 2+2.
Its not something. wooooow moment but saying-hello-to-Saint-Peter surely is a big big moment. Physical harm we expected but this result hits hard. It was expected. it was predictable but still it was a strong moment.
Mr. Yoon - is he the one or not?
1st - Mr. Yoon Can't - Similar to Ga-Young and Mrs. Lee scene.
2nd - Mr. Yoon Can - There lies a motive and physically capable.
I am on 65% can't and 35% on can.
Mr. Yoon was in team of Mr. Lee. And Mr. Young drectly ordered Mr. Lee to not mess with his family + Mr. Woo given order to do things.

and I already warm up to Yoon, why you have to be THE bad guy?? I also hoping he just the bad guy ala Seo Dongjae, with meaner look, you know....

I don't think Yoon murdered Eun soo. I think it is more likely that umbrella man who is after the USB which contains proof of his CEO's past crimes. The show is trying to confuse us with the dropped hints/red herrings.

I never really understood the general hostility against Eunsoo - she was a great character that did what she had to do to uncover the lies surrounding Young Iljae's dismissal.
Ps The way the mystery unraveled in ep14 is even better - two thumbs up for Forest of Secrets.

Was there a general hostility? I didn't get that impression with the comments in the recaps here. In fact, I'd say Eun Soo had grown on viewers quite a bit.
For me, I never had to choose between Yeo Jin and Eun Soo. These characters are very different but delightful in their own ways.

I don't think there was a general hostility either. Disliking or struggling with some of Eun Soo's strong traits isn't hostility – I found Eun Soo's behaviour off-putting at time, particularly when she forcefully invaded Shi-mok's personal space and he obviously felt uncomfortable, but I never disliked her. Her determination and drive was always understandable, just not always the right way to go about things – indeed, it was highly dangerous, as it in the end sadly proved to be.
I also never felt like having to choose between Yeo Jin and Eun Soo. Always saw Yeo Jin as his equal (Yin to his Yang), while Eun Soo was a very ambitious mentee (in part b/c of the age difference, them working together in the same department and because he was her supervisor).

The thing is it isn't eun soo's tendency to romanticize shi mok's actions toward her (as previous ep comments said) that had lead to viewers' animosity to her character, I believe it is the viewers' tendency to romanticize shi mok actions to the two female characters that lead to it. We can never really know what he actually felt for eun soo, and he probably doesn't know either. What I'd like to question is if eun soo was a male character instead of female (with exactly the same character arc and personality), would the audience dislike the character just as much as they did with eun soo?

I am shipping Shi Mok & Yeo-jin, but I totally agree with you.
People are romanticising actions and words (Shi mok's, Eun-soo's, Yeo-jin's), but really there is nothing definite. And even if there are romantic feelings, chances are they are like when you're interested in someone, you kinda like him/her but nothing actually ever happens.
<What I'd like to question is if eun soo was a male character instead of female
That's an interesting thought (though I still think viewers didn't all hate Eun Soo, they disliked some of her behaviour but that doesn't equate to hating her). I think if we made her female character male, a lot of change though. Would her father ask Shi Mok to protect her? And obviously, her mother wouldn't suggest Shi Mok as a son-in-law, Yeo-jin wouldn't be poised opposite her, etc., so it's difficult to compare.

Yes this, we'll never know if either of them felt anything more for each other. They had a difficult at times stressful relation and their chemistry was tension filled but we have no direct indication as to if there was anything more than that. We know they both cared about each other but we'll never know how far it could go or not. That's the point of the story.

I agree with both @TheImprintonmynose and @alua. Viewers (I include myself) do tend to romanticize character actions. This is true for both Yeo-Jin and Eun-Soo and maybe more so for Yeo-Jin. In this episode some folks commented that she was angling for an invite to Shi-Mok's place but I didn't see it that way. She was her usual attentive self-noting that he was a little shaken and getting him a calming tea. She was ready to walk away when he invited her in. Their interaction after that was more of two people who have a good working relationship discussing work they both have in common.
I will point out though that Eun-Soo's actions tend to appear to have some romantic interest (real or manipulation tactic) not just for the viewers but also the other characters in the drama-Jung Bon mistakes her as someone Shi-Mok is seeing and no one seems to be surprised by that. So in some sense it's not just the viewer but also the drama it self that hints at possible romance between them. IMO Eun-Soo definitely wanted Shi-Mok's validation-as to why maybe because he's her senior who is very smart and capable but also with a slight touch of romantic interest.

I was expecting Eun Soo's death since a few episodes ago. I'm still sad that it happened although personally the character's the one I feel less emotionnally connected to.
I'm also very sad Yoon seems like the culprit, but once again who knows....
My head is already preoccupied with the last 2 episodes. Is it over already? This can't be.... sigh. Someone on dramabeans said they couldn't stand 2 men in suits talking for a long time that's why they would never like this drama. But I feel like so much is happening in one episode, I feel like it's moving so fast... in already thinking about what could possibly happen next!

writer made Eun-Soo looked like naive and overly sensitive in a world where everyone is either smart or tries to be smart and people who manage their expressions to emotions.
Her character was directly in conflict with many other prominent characters. Even I expected here to be a bit more sensible. Result is in front of all of us.

Yup, there was more than the general hostility. Once can go back on the recaps here and there used to be anger directed at ES for her behaviour and recklessness many a time.
The death has muted this feel hence the denying of this. But it was there , the past comments show and few like astromatic and gem28 jumped in defending her well. (Apologies others as I dont remember your names, who all defended ES :) )
I cant forget astromatic's comment that she / he at times felt she had to defend ES 'till I turned blue in the face'. It was there, the hostility :) Her death has subdued this feel I guess..

Since I always came late to the recap party (darn it, time zone!), I feel really happy and glad whenever I read someone defend Eun-soo. I know she is rash and naive, but she is also one of the complex female character that I really appreciated. It's easy to like a character like Yeo-jin who is affectionate, warm, kind, badass, and smart. But with someone like Eun-soo, we need more time to see beyond her naivety and rashness to the girl who desperately want to do everything she can to save her family. That's why I always feels the need to love her more fiercely than Yeo-jin, because everyone is already loving her. Her death hit me hard. I didn't see it coming this fast. FOS wouldn't be the same now without her.

My mind completely scattered. How? Why? Who? Why??
I expected her to be involved in some sort of trouble, but died? Just like that?? Oh God, my Eun-soo... My poor Eun-soo... That girl has been through so much. It broke my heart more than I thought it would be. She still hasn't found true peace and happiness for her family. She died with hate and deep desire for revenge still rooted in her heart. This is just too much for her. And I still couldn't fully process the fact that she is truly gone now.
Eun-soo's murder just makes me suspected Yoon even more, especially since he was the one who found her body first (judging from all the blood on his hands and shirt). And the dark look he sent to Eun-soo's back all eps long didn't help either. I know he trembled in shock in that last scene, but whether it's genuine or his acting is just that good is anybody's guess.
And lastly, I'm extremely worried for Shi-mok. No matter how muted his emotions are, I'm afraid this will break him. Eun-soo is someone he knew well and they have pretty close relationship. She also called him shortly before her death, which he brushed off. I hope he won't feel that irrational guilt for letting her die. But if that really happen, hopefully the others would be there to support him.

I've always wondered why Shi-mok treated Eun-soo so differently compared to Yeo-jin. With Yeo-jin, he was pleasant at all times, would engage in deep discussion about the case, and sometimes even threw in a sarcastic joke or two. However, with Eun-soo he was mostly quite abrupt and rude (by ordinary people's relationship with colleagues standard, not by Shi-mok's standard). I understand that his early suspicions that Eun-soo may be somehow involved plus her own personal revenge agenda may contribute to his distrust, but Eun-soo's just so hungry for his approval it feels a bit like kicking an adoring puppy. So I can definitely relate to Yeo-jin's "You should be nicer to her" remark because I was about to say it to Shi-mok myself. In retrospect, it's now "You should've been nicer to her". I'm not blaming Shi-mok in the slightest but I can imagine his heartbreak. Be strong, Shi-mok!! Eun-soo would've wanted you to see this to the end.

I cried at the end. It felt so emotional and at the moment I couldn't even perfectly reason why I started sobbing and hiccuping.
I know I shouldn't, but a tiny part in me is actually shipping Eun-soo and Shi-mok romantically. I didn't expect anything for them, just a slight affection from Shi-mok to this reckless but hardworking hoobae was more than enough. But then the show broke my heart in a way I never expected. I never cried this painfully for any of my OTPs before.
Honestly though, after calmed down, still, that tiny part in me (which was getting bigger after Eun-soo's death) kinda wish and even expect that her death could be a trigger for Shi-mok's feeling to burst out. And if that happens, doesn't that mean Shi-mok see her in certain way?
This is so out of context, but I cannot help, I'm an ordinary k-drama freak, anyway. Still cannot put away romance from any show.

I can relate to that, I tend to romanticize a show myself, it's the romance junkie in me. I, too, was rooting for Eun-soo to win Shi-mok's heart by the end of the drama, mostly because I loved her spirit and how she consistently sided Shi-mok and tried to help him (despite her own agenda).

"And if that happens, doesn't that mean Shi-mok see her in certain way?"
Throughout this show, I've been asking myself exactly WHAT Shi-mok considers her as, and from everything we've seen I've come to the conclusion that there is no romantic inclination on his part. I think he saw her as more of a dongsaeng.
The interesting question for me though, is what SHE saw him as. Did she really have somewhat of a crush on him? Was it just straight sunbae adoration?

Me too! I've been so fascinated trying to figure out the nature of Shi-mok's feelings for her and I'm not sure it's something we'll ever be able to get a concrete answer to. I'm not sure Shi-mok is fully capable of categorizing how he "feels" for other people, since so much of his emotion runs beneath the surface.
I'm likely to agree with you, but, for whatever reason, Eun-soo got under his skin in a way that made me wonder whether there was something a bit more to it on his side than he could ever consciously realize. I respond more to the companionate sort of love/trust forming between him and Yeo-jin, as I think that brings out an ease and contentment in him that is probably the closest thing to peace and happiness he's experienced in a long time. And, yet, there was a certain energy between him and Eun-soo that pulled me in too, even though I could never really picture them working out romantically.

Yes, I thought she was naive to the point of dangerousness--to herself, to her family, to the investigation. The way she plunged forward into action without enough information to know what harm she might cause or what the probable consequences would be was really reckless. She did not truly understand what she was getting herself into. But she did it for such understandable, heartbreaking reasons. I was really sad about. Not as sad as I'd be if something happened to Yeo-jin, but still quite sad.

oh loooooooord, thank you @sailorjumun for this recap !
I've been refreshing for daaaaaaaaays !
I'll start by saying that, in spite of me not liking Eun-soo very much, I truly did not want her demise. Her death, while somewhat expected, given how much she knew and how much she was figuring out, still made me very very sad. I didn't cry but oh did I feel the heartbreak when watching Yeo-Jin's tear-filled face @ the crime scene or Shi-Mok's disbelief when he got there. I honestly wasn't ready for her to die at all.
Is it Chief Yoon? It HAS to be. Does he feel remorseful? I don't think those tears were fake. He looked like a killer that had just killed one too many and this one hit home.
Aside from the shocking ending, did anyone else just melt with smiles and gooey happy feels when Yeo-Jin walked into Shi-Mok's office and chatted all cute with the adorable & reliable clerks? You could tell that a genuine friendship had grown from being on the special team together and I simply LOOOOVED it !
oh and one last thing: did anyone else notice that the living room @ Chairman Lee's house is the SAME as the one in "1% of Anything (2016)" (Jae-in's grandfather's living room) ?!?! LOL
happy Wednesday, Beanies !

Yes, Prosecutor Yoon killed Park Moo Sung and abducted Kim Gayoung but I don't think he killed Eun Soo. I think the secretary of Lee Yoon Bum(with Lee Yoon Bum orders) is the killer of Eun Soo. Prosecutor Yoon doesn't need to kill Eun Soo because she was not part of the death of his child. He didn't kill Gayoung because she has nothing to do with it too

You may be right! Chairman Lee's secretary is like some sort of hit guy. He was probably the one who sent Shi Mok the warning. Since Chairman Lee is very desperate to get the information before Young leaks it to Shi Mok, he might have instructed his guy to snoop in Young's house. Eun Soo could have gone back to get the usb since she saw her father hiding the thing. He must have tailed her and killed her in attempt to get the usb.

Wasn't Chief Prosecutor the one who had the ticket? Not his FIL?
That however leads to another question - why is Chief Lee aiding Yoon?

So Lee Yoon-beom arranged the ticket for his son-in-law and not Yoon? I thought Lee Chang-jun prepared the ticket for himself? Also, I thought it was suspicious that Lee Yoon-beom said to the person on the other end of the line, "do not contact me until I contact you." Doesn't sound like he was speaking to Lee Chang-jun to me.

What I want to know is why Eun Soo went to Ga Young's place. Did she already take a look into the usb? That means there's crucial evidence left at GY's place which together with the usb will solve the case.

Tattoo are a no-no in Korea in general, they are associated with crime and gangs. People don't show them off – prosecutors surely even less so (though it seems, unlike policemen, they are not body-checked for them).
If there is another person with the same tattoo, he may know who that is too.
And: It's likely Ga-young saw his tattoo (or the other person's) and I do think he's involved in her case / Park's murder. But, that's not necessarily enough motive for him to kill Eun Soo. As I said, I can't say much, but there's also something he says/does in the next episode that makes me think so.

Sure, but that's our imaginations going haywire – remember, the show has been very good at this, making us suspect everyone and everything and it would not be the first time our suspicious turned out wrong.
Play the same scenes without the sound and put on some melancholic music, and rather than dark and foreboding, the whole scenes will have a different feeling. It may well be that he realised she knew something dangerous, but that look in his eyes may not have been a wish to kill her but worry.

He has much more reason to kill Park than to kill Eun Soo – the assumption being that Park was involved in the death of Yoon's child. My guess is Yoon knows a lot more of the things under the surface (the corruption), but the death of his child pushed him over. It's the wrong way to seek justice obviously, but I can see the reasoning, while with Eun Soo, if he's not a a cold-blooded psycho that kills people like flies, that tattoo just isn't enough.

Darn! I never knew I would feel so sad about Eun Soo's death. This show has a very subtle way of making you feel for the characters such that a betrayal or a revelation or a death impacts you more than you had imagined.
I had to backtrack and confirm that the body was Eun Soo and not Ga Young. I was completely blind sided to fear for Ga Young at the moment because she was the one who went missing and Eun Soo was just on the phone with Shi Mok. Show, you are damn good!
All seems to point to Yoon as the murderer but is he really the one? Well, he had the motive since Eun Soo saw his tatoo and became suspicious. Also, what was he doing at Ga Young's old place? It cannot be that GY's mom would move GY there. This leads to more questions - what was Eun Soo doing there and how did Yoon know of her movements?

She died in a truly horrific manner. I find it hard to believe that Yoon would go so far to seek justice. I can imagine him killing CEO Park but not Ga Young and Eun Soo, unless the latter's death was an accident. But can throat slitting be accidental? I think not.

Also, I'm assuming the bus company reference wasn't accidental. Too much detail for that? So possibly the link to Yoon - child killed by bus, perhaps.

I wondered about that too. I'm not sure if the bus company discussion ties in with the murders or was to show how the different team members are handling the disbanding of the team-Shi-Mok/Yeo-Jin continuing the investigation, Clerk Kim being ambivalent, Clerk Choi decisively moving on.

Holy skdjfakdfja!!! The terror I felt when seeing the “surprise” that was left for Shi Mok at his apartment. There are no words. Lord have mercy I would have been a shaking mess if it were me. This is definitely an instance where his inability to feel emotions or to feel them in a very limited way definitely comes in handy. I can see this type of ‘message’ shaking any other prosecutor and possibly scaring them into dropping their investigation. But definitely not Shi Mok.
Despite the terrifying nature of the scare-tactic that was employed I don’t think it was very well thought out or smart. We as the viewers know that Shi Mok doesn’t experience emotions the way other people do. It was also revealed in earlier episodes through a news program and childhood classmates that Shi-Mok had an operation performed that allowed him to become apathetic towards most things. Wasn’t that shared publicly or am I remembering it wrong? I know his previous bouts of rage were a hot topic amongst colleagues once that news broke.
I remember thinking at the beginning of this episode that Eun Soo needed to be more careful about how suspicious she was of people. That she really needed to exercise more caution and be more discreet but that ending still shook me. The way the episode began with all of them taking a group picture felt very foreshadow-y but I didn’t put it In my head that a part of the team would be killed off. I did not see this coming at all and I’m not going to lie her death left me sad in the end. The little tid-bits that are playing back in my mind make a lot more sense now. Especially the scene where Yeo Jin tells Shi Mok to be a little nicer to Eun Soo and Shi Mok replies that he is being nice.
Moving on to another less serious, and at this point quite ridiculous character; why on earth is Dong Jae having all these important conversations with people while he’s in the Chief Secretary’s office? Lol, I can’t help but laugh at how absurd this man is. He doesn’t even consider that maybe he should step outside first.
I think this was the first episode of this show that left me thoroughly shook by the end of it.

I don't blame the person who carried out the scare tactic for not knowing that Shi Mok wouldn't be affected. His condition wasn't shared publicly and even if he was privy to the information, it is very much anyone's guess as to what would really spook Shi Mok.
I know what you mean about Eun Soo but that's because we as viewers already knew that Yoon is the one who bore the initials 07. Eun Soo just learnt of it so I can't blame her for her initial reaction and she did try her best to hide her suspicion look from Yoon. It was just too bad that Yoon caught on real fast.

I couldn't remember if they'd only speculated on his bouts of anger as a child or if they'd also revealed info about his inability to feel emotions.
As for Eun Soo this wasn't the first episode where she's shown an inability to be more covert about her suspicions. There's the instance when she went after Dong Jae, when she went after the man who'd originally brought the bribe to her fathers house and when she stormed into the Chief secretary's office, etc. None of that justifies her death of course and I understand her motivations but still :/. I can't help thinking if she was just a little more cautious.

I got the impression what was shared on TV was more speculation than actual facts. Also, my general impression has been that pretty much everyone, including people who worked with him a long time, just didn't "get" the way Shi Mok is and reacts – the only exception having been Yeo-jin.
Plus, even if someone did fully understand the tactic wouldn't spook him, it hardly matters: because the person would know that Shi Mok, being as intelligent as he is, would still get the message – that it was a warning. Just because he's not having sleepness nights after having seen a cut up suit hanging over his bed, makes that message no less dangerous.

No, he was only revealed to be an aggressive teen in his past and bullying his classmates in the news. They never knew of his past surgery or his illness in the first place, but Yoon managed to dig it out and shared the info with Lee Chang-jun, so everyone still doesn't get Shi-mok because they don't know.

The ending was so shocking!!! I had to replay that scene again to make sure. Just when the show had Eun Soo pick up a strange clue about Yoon, the show had her killed right away. I was waiting for her to meet Shi Mok and tell him about her observation. I didn’t think she was going to die that soon.
At first, I thought Yoon was in handcuffs with the way his hands were posed. But I reexamined the scene and realized that he must have faked his attempt to save her and wanted her blood on his hands so that the crime scene team would exclude his DNA from the suspect list. UGHHHHH.
But why were the two of them at Ga Young’s old place?? Curious how Yoon is going to explain that.
I think Eun Soo’s murder will be the catalyst to her father’s actions if he somehow thinks her death was related to Hanjo group.
I’m wary of Section Chief Kang now that he has given in to the higher-ups and accepted his promotion. :(

I think all of us never really knew what Eun Soo was. But I'll say this, she was fighting the battle her father left for her sake and died fighting it. I knew why she might not make it because she was capable, smart, hot-headed, rash and fearless. And it was a recipe for disaster. But I could always connect to her frustrations, anger and resentment. She wasn't a perfect human being. But I could still relate to her misguided nature or at least the cause that drove her. She love her father and mother more than herself and restoring their honor has consumed her life. I admit, watching live, I was extremely sad at what had happened and I channeled that sadness as anger towards Shi Mok. But her death really wasn't anybody's fault. She is a fallen soldier in a huge power struggle. I have watched episode 14 but without spoiling that is all I will say. As for Shi Mok, I believed up till 13, that he really felt nothing for Eun Soo but that isn't true. Love, adoration, caring for somebody comes in many forms. Romantic love is only one aspect of it. I continue to adore Yeo Jin and I know Shi Mok and Yeo Jin will never give up even if their special investigation unit gets disbanded. 13 was like the calm before the storm. 14 is official start of our final chapter. A very sad chapter with a young, fallen and very flawed character in the middle of it all. I wish the writer would allow her to live but I see why it was necessary.
One final question, anybody addicted to the new Peter Han OST, please raise your hands.

I think Shi Mok did whatever he could to protect Eun Soo. The only doubtful occasion was when he followed her and Dong Jae and allowed DJ to choke her. I'd put that to a risk that he was willing to put her through in order to uncover the truth.
I love how the show doesn't give in to conventional relationship tropes. We can never pin point down the relationship and feelings Eun Soo and Shi Mok have towards each other. Ditto for Yeo Jin and Shi Mok.

Having such ambiguity in these relationships, not only ES and SM, but Yeon-jae and Chanjun, Yeo-jin and Shi-mok, etc. makes their relationship very interesting and compelling to watch. There is so much to unpack

I know others have mentioned that, but I didn't interpret that scene as Shi Mok waiting passively while Dong Jae chocked Eun Soo. I thought he had just arrived after Dong Jae started freaking out that he might have killed her, and had pulled out his gun and was about to step in when Eun Soo recovered.

I agree with why her death was necessary and the right trigger in the right direction for Shi-mok and the others. So far, Shi-mok and his team only had to deal with Park Moo-sung's death and the corruption deep within the system, but now that one of their closest colleague (someone they see and interact with on daily basis) died, it just shifted the whole dynamic and raised the stake higher because it felt like they were too lax and careless dealing with a murder case in the first place. Though deeply saddened by her death, I feel good knowing her death serves as a jumpstart for justice to prevail.

I feel she didnt deserve to die to better a character a male character who was so brutal to her always.
Why should the writer sacrifice her for SM's improvement? I do not like this one bit.
She instead should have walked away like I said before chucked SM off the kerb found a bestttt guy for herself and THIS loss of ES from SM's life should have triggered something in him. What he is feeling now. She absolutely did not have to die.

It was very likely though. They were/are investigating murder (and possibly manslaughter, if the death of Yoon's child is part of it), attempted murder and corruption at the highest level, not dealing with people who used fake bus tickets or something.
And as maryxiah, the writer didn't just use the character as a mere plot device, she made her a fully dimensional individual.

I wouldn't agree to her death if it means sacrificing her for another character's development. But here, I can see why Eun-soo would be heading for that direction regardless of Shi-mok's involvement, Eun-soo was shown to be so dogged in her mission that she was too fearless and uncaring for her own safety, it's safe to assume she would have ended that way anyway. But I love that the writer gave her enough respect that people sincerely mourned over her loss, and that loss stirred fire and regret in them that they didn't prevent this in the first place, i.e. Shi-mok and her father. I wouldn't like it one bit if she was only used as a plot device, but the writer clearly developed her well enough that we come to care for her. It's true that she died a horrific death, but I feel like it's the needed warning that the hanging suit didn't get to Shi-mok.

Having a well-liked character die raises the emotional stakes both for the other characters and for the viewers, beyond just an entertaining story where the good guys eventually win. Joss Whedon is famous for this (and explained it better than I just did in his DVD commentaries but I can't remember how he phrased it).

It's not shi mok faults and I think he knew it but the feeling and memory remain.
It makes me think of the things I haven't done or the things I didn't finish to people. IIRC she has enough time to tell shi mok after her suspicion starts and she gets asked in the phone call if it's urgent so let's use our time wisely.

'It makes me think of the things I haven't done or the things I didn't finish to people.'
-- This! Me too :(, made me think how I take some people in my life for granted. Life is too short, and it must hurt like hell when you couldn't tell people how much they meant to you. To me it seemed like, shi mok saw eun soo truly as his apprentice, and treated her as a mentor, even if he wouldn't admit it. He still cared for her in his own way,[ and him being apathetic might have made it harder for him], so to see him break down in the next episode was heartbreaking. :( I am a bit cautious of the writer now since she seems to be quite unique, I hope she does justice to his character.
