The Liar and His Lover: Episode 13
by SailorJumun
These kids just can’t catch a break. When scandals break out, they’re usually nothing but online articles that we can exit out of. But for those involved, it’s not something they can simply escape. It completely consumes them and makes them feel as if it’s the end of the world. As Crude Play and Mush & Co. face what seems like the worst possible situation, we have certain friends come together and, as expected, certain friends shrink farther away – perhaps a little too far.
EPISODE 13 RECAP
Han-gyul turns to the audience, completely unmasked and vulnerable, as the orginial Crude Play performs for the very first time. Outside, Chan-young and So-rim hear them start playing “It’s Okay.” So-rim moves to walk back when Chan-young grabs her into a tight hug and asks her if she could just choose him. Unsure of what else to do, So-rim just stands there as he holds her.
The audience seems to be responding to the performance well, but the boys seem completely sapped of energy. From backstage, CEO Yoo mutters to Jin-hyuk that she can see why Han-gyul left the band – when it comes to the bass, Chan-young truly is superior. Jin-hyuk gives her the exact same look of annoyance that’s on my face right now.
Chan-young releases So-rim, only to pull her away so they can talk. So-rim finally speaks up and says that if they’re going to talk, she’s going to take them to her favorite place, just as he took her to his favorite place before. As she gets into the elevator, Chan-young smiles with hope.
After the performance, the boys immediately get back to trying to reach Chan-young. Han-gyul numbly walks by them and asks Gyu-sun and Jin-woo where So-rim went. Gyu-sun hesitates at first, but decides to show him the text he just received from So-rim saying that she’s with Chan-young.
Thrown into a sudden panic, Han-gyul flies out of there and takes the first taxi he sees to Sole Music. He goes crazy running all over the company and calling So-rim’s phone, but to no avail.
Back at the Musical Sketchbook venue, the sly Reporter Choi eavesdrops on Jin-hyuk’s conversation with the team leader and deducts that K wasn’t originally supposed to perform. The reporter calls his boss to confirm that he has a new story. Gah! Too many things are happening at once, I can’t take this.
It turns out that So-rim’s special place was Grandma’s house. Grandma is delighted to have her back home and surprised to see that she’s also brought a celebrity. Chan-young seems a bit uncomfortable at first, but he complies when So-rim and Grandma insist that he stay for dinner.
So-rim notices her missed calls from Han-gyul and softly says “I’m sorry” before throwing another worried look toward Chan-young’s direction. But it looks like Han-gyul has already figured out where she must be as he runs out of Sole.
Once dinner is set, So-rim keeps the compliments for Chan-young coming, subtly urging Grandma to do the same. But when Grandma asks why she calls him “Chan-young Oppa” and Han-gyul “Han-gyul-ssi” (the former being the more affectionate term), So-rim notices Chan-young tense up.
“Because Chan-young Oppa is my idol,” she responds carefully. “He’s someone I’ve always respected and someone I’m happy to be next to.” Awww. That’s sweet, but I’m pretty sure she just idol-zoned him.
Grandma asks about Han-gyul, and So-rim starts to say something but stops herself and instead says that he’s just a guy. But Chan-young smiles to himself, knowing better.
Just then, the doorbell rings, and they’re all surprised to see Han-gyul, out of breath. Before Chan-young can try to leave, Han-gyul quickly feigns hunger and sits them all back down. He looks at Chan-young from across the table, a quiet apology in his eyes.
Afterward, Han-gyul finds Chan-young in So-rim’s room, messing with her Chan-young plushie. He asks Han-gyul if being on stage was exactly how he’d imagined it and if he’d finally found the real Crude Play’s sound. Behind them, So-rim listens in.
“You said that Crude Play was my band,” Han-gyul says, placing a hand on Chan-young’s arm. “But when making our music, you were always there. I wrote it with the sound of your bass in mind.” Chan-young finally cracks a genuine smile and sadly places his plushie on So-rim’s bed.
Soo-yeon comes by to bring So-rim back to the dorms. She’s upset that So-rim took Chan-young home whilst in the middle of a scandal, but So-rim murmurs that she had no choice – she didn’t want to hear what Chan-young had tried to say earlier. Meanwhile, Chan-young gets the rest of the boys to the bar to apologize for bailing and to make an announcement: “I want to take a break from Crude Play.”
The boys try to convince him that he made a simple mistake, but Chan-young shakes his head, saying it was completely intentional. And for the first time in his career, it felt like he was able to make his own choice. Smiling at Han-gyul, he admits that he’s always felt like a replacement. Shi-hyun cuts in that they’ve never thought of him that way, and Chan-young says that he knows. He’d stuck around all this time because all of them – including Han-gyul – weren’t actually bad guys.
However, Chan-young says, that just made him greedier. If anything, it only deepened his desire for his position in the band to feel more real. But now, he’s decided that he doesn’t want his feelings to ruin the band or their music, so he begs them to let him go. Oh, that hurts. But I’m so proud of this boy right now.
The next day, Jin-hyuk is overcome with stress as he looks over all the new articles about the performance. The public has figured out that K is the same boy in the pictures that Se-jung leaked, and it’s only made So-rim’s so-called love triangle scandal worse. If that wasn’t already enough, Chan-young comes in to tell Jin-hyuk about his plans to take a break.
Surprisingly, Jin-hyuk’s entire business façade fades away. He apologizes to Chan-young, admitting that he’d been impatient because CEO Yoo had threatened to steal So-rim away.
Chan-young reminds Jin-hyuk that he was “impatient” back when he pushed him into Crude Play as well – because he’d been in a hurry to release Han-gyul’s music. Chan-young had understood him back then, but he asks what his excuse is now. “I don’t think it’s because of music,” he says pointedly. As Chan-young walks out, Jin-hyuk remembers Han-gyul asking how much they had to give up for him to be satisfied.
Han-gyul stops Chan-young as he tries to head out with his bass guitar. He’s reluctant to let Chan-young leave, but he’s unsure of what to say.
Finally, he asks if things might’ve been different between them if they’d met when he was already a producer and Chan-young was already a bassist. (Gah. Come on, don’t make me cry!) “No,” Chan-young answers. “It would’ve been the same. Because either way, we both would’ve met So-rim.” As a matter of fact, he continues, he’s off to see So-rim right now to tell her something.
It’s late by the time Chan-young reaches So-rim’s dorm, though So-rim is glad to see that he’s okay. Getting straight to the point, he guesses that she brought him to her house last night to keep his mouth shut. He starts to say that he likes her, only to pause at her discomfort. He smiles and decides that if she really doesn’t want to hear it, he won’t say anything. Instead, he tells her that it’s not her fault. She doesn’t understand what he’s referring to, but he doesn’t elaborate.
However, So-rim does find out the next day when news of Chan-young’s break from band activities comes out. She remembers his words last night, but the guilt is still written all over her face.
When Mush & Co. head over to Sole, they freeze at the sight of the company’s outer wall – it’s completely covered with death threats from fans, who are blaming So-rim for Chan-young’s break.
Soo-yeon urges the trio inside so she and other crew members can take care of the wall. Han-gyul comes up in the middle of their cleaning, horrified by all the harsh comments. Taking in his expression, Soo-yeon grabs So-rim again so that she and Han-gyul can have a few moments alone.
When Han-gyul asks if she’s okay, So-rim starts to lie and then admits that she’s not. But she’s starting to get used to it. He takes her hand and changes the subject to Chan-young – what did he tell her at her dorm? When she hesitates, Han-gyul tells her not to worry, since he has no intentions of ever letting her go.
She smiles and says that it’s not that: “He told me that it isn’t my fault… But I’m not so sure it isn’t.” Realizing what she means, Han-gyul lowers her head to his shoulder and assures her that it really isn’t her fault. She accepts his comfort, but she wonders why everything has to be so hard. She thought that if she could just pursue her dreams with her friends, she’d be happy.
Han-gyul and Shi-hyun head to the studio to talk – not realizing that Jin-hyuk is listening in the back – since both of them are concerned now that Chan-young has decided to leave Crude Play’s dorm as well. Yoo-na comes in to interrupt, having just seen the online comments about So-rim. She suggests to Han-gyul that if he wants the scandal to go away, they could tell the press that they’re dating instead. Laughing at his bewilderment, she insists she’s just trying to help him.
At that, Shi-hyun smirks and figures that she’s trying to use him. Han-gyul stops him there and tells Yoo-na that he doesn’t want to cover up the scandal like that, not when he knows So-rim wouldn’t like it. Hoping she understands, he takes his leave.
However, Shi-hyun holds Yoo-na back, sarcastically saying that if she wants to be on the news so badly, she could just ask a certain handsome vocalist. When she scoffs in his face, he says that that would be better than telling the press she’s dating a much older CEO. (Oh snap! Shots fired.) Yoo-na fumes that she’s doing this for music – making Jin-hyuk flinch in the back – but Shi-hyun merely tells her to stop bothering Han-gyul.
While at her desk, a certain headline catches Soo-yeon’s eye. She clicks on it to reveal an entire post comparing the leaked video of In-ho playing to the anonymous “Real Crude Play” videos. The fan who posted this is blatantly outing the band for using session musicians, and everyone – including Mush & Co. – see it all over the internet.
Crude Play is immediately brought in to Sole Music (and we see that their van is covered with markings like “Traitors” and “Get lost”). Inside, CEO Yoo has them watch the news report analyzing the details of the videos, making In-ho in particular look away in shame. She then declares that they’re going to deny the accusations.
Yoon argues that it wouldn’t be right since they’d just have to continue lying about their performances. But CEO Yoo shuts him up by asking why he debuted in the first place then – they could’ve declined their offer and started over on their own.
“Yes, I know,” Yoo turns to the rest of them. “You want to blame the adults here. You want to ask why we made you do all these things. But think carefully. Aren’t you the ones who made this choice?”
She’s sure that the boys thought they could figure it all out after they hit it big, but she tells them point-blank that they debuted the wrong way. And now it’s too late to regret it. She says this staring right at Han-gyul and Jin-hyuk, who both look absolutely crushed by her words.
Jin-hyuk goes after CEO Yoo as she leaves, telling her that she didn’t have to be so harsh on the boys. Yoo sighs in frustration, reminding him that he often switches between acting like a musician and a businessman. If he doesn’t stick to one route, she says, he could destroy the boys.
Back inside, the boys reassure Chan-young that he won’t be affected like the rest of them. They were afraid something like this might happen, so they made sure to keep his bass out of the anonymous videos. Wait. What??
Chan-young and Han-gyul look up in surprise, both of them realizing that Chan-young’s assumptions about the videos had been wrong all along. In-ho wonders if their fans will ever trust them again, but none of them are able to respond.
The next morning, Jin-hyuk meets with some reporters to make a statement. He says that the boys in the video are Crude Play and that the performance was different because they were doing a sound check. But he’s thrown back when one reporter suggests that the band play live at their upcoming press conference. CEO Yoo takes the reins on this one and smiles that the band will do just that.
The boys are obviously apprehensive about the idea, but Jin-hyuk promises to have them covered. And thankfully, Chan-young agrees to perform with them. Han-gyul says that he’ll be there too, but Shi-hyun doesn’t want that since it only concerns the band.
“That doesn’t matter,” Han-gyul persists. “I don’t want you guys taking the responsibility alone.” Before an argument ensues, Chan-young pulls Han-gyul out and tells him to let the boys do what they want.
Han-gyul insists that he can’t run away again, but Chan-young agrees with Shi-hyun – he’s not a part of this. Han-gyul and Chan-young never faked anything, so neither of them can truly understand what the others are going through. If Han-gyul said he did, it would only be a lie.
Chan-young heads back inside, leaving Han-gyul looking more lost than ever. He thinks back to things the boys have said, starting to think that he might not understand their feelings after all.
He then thinks of So-rim and gets the sudden urge to see her. He finds her in the empty concert hall, sitting by herself. When she sees him, she stands up to take the microphone and starts singing “It’s Okay” for him.
He takes a seat in front of her and tries to smile at her comforting gesture, but instead, it makes his eyes well up with tears.
So-rim immediately stops and sits down next to him, making him face her. Knowing she’s seen the news by now, he apologizes for keeping yet another secret from her. She asks if Jin-hyuk forced the boys to fake their playing, and Han-gyul is ashamed to say that they did it because he thought they could achieve their dreams that way.
He thought he could take care of his friends by writing them good songs, but in the end, he only hindered them from practicing and doing the thing they love. “I thought that was my way of being responsible for my friends,” he says, his voice shaking. “What should I have done, So-rim-ah? You’ve always caught me when I did something foolish. What is it that I can do for them now?”
So-rim doesn’t know what to say. She stands up to hold him as he cries, looking as if she so wishes she could somehow find the right words.
In-woo finds CEO Yoo still stressing over the many scandals she now has over her head. For once, In-woo skips his sarcastic comments and says that she should’ve never made the boys fake their playing. She’s taken aback by this, so she changes the subject to his new album.
But that’s the reason why In-woo is here: He’s decided that he doesn’t want to release an album after all. Yoo assumes that he’s rejecting the offer because of Han-gyul, but In-woo insists that he’s rejecting because it’s what he wants.
After he leaves, In-woo tries and fails to reach Han-gyul. He is happy, however, to see So-rim sitting outside. He’s amused by her surprise to be running into him “coincidentally” again, saying that it’s starting to become their thing. When he asks why she looks so down, she answers that the boy she likes had something bad happen to him and that she had no idea what to say to him.
In-woo smiles before asking if she wants to see his son’s photo. When he hands over his phone, So-rim’s eyes are as big as saucers. She stares at the photo of Han-gyul completely shell-shocked, especially since they don’t resemble each other. In-woo’s glad to see that she’s not mad. He explains that he just had so much fun making his son jealous, hee.
Crude Play practices “In Your Eyes” (since it’s the song they all know best), as well as the speech that they’ll be giving at the press conference. Shi-hyun gets through most of the lines, but pauses when he reaches the line that says they did nothing that they’re ashamed of. Sensing the boys’ uneasiness, Jin-hyuk calls it a day. Before they leave, he tells them not to worry since it’ll all pass. Shi-hyun gives him one last incredulous look.
Han-gyul stays behind to ask Jin-hyuk if he remembers what he said when they first met – that if they live their lives making music, skills don’t matter. Back then, Han-gyul had asked what does matter, to which Jin-hyuk replied for him to figure it out. Han-gyul admits that even now, he hasn’t quite figured it out. Jin-hyuk starts to say that it’s the money, but Han-gyul disagrees. He thinks that what matters is just living a life making music.
Shi-hyun joins Chan-young outside and sincerely apologizes for the things he said when Chan-young became a part of the band. Chan-young smiles and teases him for suddenly getting all emotional on him.
Han-gyul broods in the studio, remembering Shi-hyun’s face as he struggled to read the apology statement. He puts his headphones on and opens up “In Your Eyes,” the song bringing back memories to when they were just four carefree high school boys.
In the practice room, In-ho is also brooding as he sits in front of his drum set. Yoon comes in and suggests they practice together.
In-ho is curious if Yoon is nervous about the press conference. Yoon says he isn’t, but he did decide that after the press conference, he’s going to play for himself. He doesn’t care if it takes forever for them to release another album. Smiling, he tells In-ho that as a friend, he has to follow suit. They grin at each other and get to practicing.
At the same time, Han-gyul starts messing around with the track on his computer. He gives it a rest well after dark and when he heads out, he notices that In-ho is still in Sole. He calls out to him and In-ho quickly hides away what looks like… medicine? Boy, what are you doing?
In-ho says that he’s going out for a drive, so Han-gyul asks if they can go together and talk like they always used to. “Sorry,” In-ho says eerily. “I don’t think I can do that.” He makes up an excuse that he’s going to see his mother in Incheon. Han-gyul nods and starts to leave when In-ho reaches out to grasp onto his arm. “Han-gyul-ah, it’ll all turn out okay, right?” he asks.
Han-gyul assures him that of course it will. But the question seems to follow Han-gyul home; he tosses and turns in bed, whimpering, “I’m sorry, you guys” in his sleep. He wakes up in a cold sweat, only to get a frantic call from Shi-hyun. He tells Han-gyul to get to the hospital right away – In-ho has been in a car accident.
COMMENTS
In-ho, nooo! Augh, it’s like these kids are purposely trying to make my blood pressure shoot sky-high. The easygoing drummer has shown signs of an increase in stress and anxiety, so I guess it wasn’t long before we saw him crack too. As was established, everyone here has their own problems, and they instinctively repress them, thinking their issues are small compared to those around them. But at the same time, they feel it so much that it’s all they can focus on.
I love that Liar has continued to make Sole Music the sole (har) entity that connects all of these characters while still giving us so much variety as to what bothers them. The drama doesn’t hold back on hurting them, and though it’s hard to watch, I appreciate how far it’s willing to go to represent the harsh reality of being a celebrity. Last week, I wanted to give everyone a hug, and now this week, I want to throw them all in a bubble and protect them from the outside world. If only it could be that easy.
I was genuinely nervous for Chan-young when he left the Musical Sketchbook performance – for a second, I thought he was contemplating suicide – but then it dawned on me what he was trying to do for Han-gyul and the boys, and my heart broke for about the hundredth time. When Han-gyul had his turnaround in Episode 9, it was like releasing the biggest sigh of relief, and I love that we had a very similar yet very different payoff with Chan-young here. Both boys needed little pushes of encouragement here and there from those around them, but when it came to making that final decision, they had to make it on their own. And I’m proud of Chan-young for finally deciding to take So-rim’s feelings into account and not make her uncomfortable by confessing. I feel like he’s finally respecting the fact that she has a boyfriend, and for that, I can finally respect him.
I think Chan-young will be working on his self-confidence for a while – it’s a process, as it is with everyone – but it was so great to see him start by opening up to the boys and releasing what must’ve been years’ worth of pent-up anger. I think it’s clear that he’s always liked Han-gyul, but all of his negative feelings toward him just happened to outweigh the positive. At least now, I see a chance for Chan-young to let the positive back in.
We’ve had Han-gyul’s turnaround and Chan-young’s turnaround thus far, so it’s about time we also get Jin-hyuk’s. All three have been equally frustrating, but we’ve held on to all of them throughout the entire drama because they showed a vulnerability and an endearing ignorance that grounded them into reality. It’s even more interesting with Jin-hyuk, since he’s the bigshot CEO. In this episode, he was truly surprised to see what this business has done to him. Surely, he must’ve been as passionate about music as Han-gyul and his friends when he was their age. But like Chan-young mentioned, Jin-hyuk has seemed to have lost that passion. Once you enter the industry, “working for the music” and “working for the money” start to blur together, as we’ve seen with people like In-woo. I wonder if Han-gyul’s last words to Jin-hyuk will help him see a little more clearly.
Our Crude Play boys have dealt with many years of manipulation, but things are about to change now that that’s led to someone actually getting hurt. Whether or not it was intentional on In-ho’s part, things have to change before it gets any worse. Han-gyul has made so much progress up until now, but I can see him start to bottle up that guilt again. He took responsibility for the band when they got signed, and it saddens me that he feels like he has to continue doing that now. I don’t think he’s regressing, per se; his past experiences have just wired him to think that way. It’s another ongoing process is all.

Okay yeah ..so there ends the happy part...maybe I needed this after two episodes of endless heartbreak. I don't know who to blame or take out my anger on for all the shit everyone was going through.... I felt bad for real Crude Play, for Chan Young, for Han Gyul, So Rim and Jin Hyuk...but who takes the cake for the worst heartbreak of all it's Jin Woo...maybe it's the next episode ..but I don't think I have the heart to read the next recap . At the end, I just wanted for these little boys and girls to go for a group hug.

Some of the comments are probably pre-typed. I very much appreciate it, it makes their comments so coherent and easy to read. It's something I like about Dramabeans. The commenters are so thoughtful and even prepare their thoughts thoughtfully.

@klurker I rarely type my comments ahead of time, but sometimes, when I have so much to say, and I don't want to forget anything important, I type it out first on a doc. This drama has so much going on, it's no wonder people have so much to talk about it they need to type it out first. It's a testament to how rich in material this drama has.

It makes me wonder with all the lengthy, thoughtful responses and the fast flood of comments about the demographic of people on Dramabeans (age? job? time-zone?). Recaps are often posted either when I'm sleeping (I have a grandma's bedtime since I graduated uni and started working full-time) or when I'm at work (like right now, I'm taking a break). That 9-5 life! Usually I have to come back to a post much later to write out a nice long comment because I don't have time. Or I don't write one at all. D: I love reading of yours though!

@dooleygongshil I read somewhere (either recap or Open Thread) that several Liar and Lover fans on Dramabeans were working mothers (doctors, lawyers, etc.) as well as students, so it's really amazing to me that this drama can draw them out from their work or family life. Perhaps it's a good distraction for them? Or nice break from their stressful or daily lives? I'm a lurker myself, so I understand what you mean about not writing a comment at all. But sometimes, it just feels nice to leave a trace of yourself in such an exciting part of the drama history. It's not often a drama like this comes by.

Just thought I'd share this, since you might not be aware of the "No Firsts"-policy:
http://www.dramabeans.com/about/commenting-policy/
Back on track, there really is SO much heartbreak in this week's eps. I felt so bad for pretty much everyone, except CEO Yoo. She's the only one completely in charge of her own fate, free to pull the strings all over the place and be the coldhearted puppeteer. On the other hand, she does have a point in some of the things she said in the next ep (I think that's the one at least lol). She's all business and somehow you can rely on that and know that she'd at least never do anything to hurt the agency, if not her artists. Not that that makes me root for her :P

lol I just realized that CEO Yoo is that friend we all have who grew up in a glitzy environment and who we occasionally hate for not understanding our romantic/dramatic/emotional struggles. But then, she's also that one consistent person who will not tolerate our drama and will gladly slap reality on us without batting an eyelash. ?

Chan Young grew up so much today. It was very symbolic when he set his Crude Play doll on So Rim's bed. Not in a romantic way, but in symbolizing his inevitable departure from Crude Play. "Naega neo... (joahaeyo)." I'm really glad there was no confession. I love how everyone on this show is so perceptive -- Han Gyul knew Chan Young liked So Rim; So Rim knew Chan Young liked her; and Chan Young knew So Rim didn't want him to confess. So Rim may not have known all along, but she sensed it right away as soon as he hugged her. I love non-oblivious heroines. She idol-zoned him.
My favorite scene was Shi Hyun's heartfelt apology to Chan Young. Shi Hyun needed to say it, and Chan Young needed to hear it. It was touching how all of Crude Play acted so careful around Chan Young today. "You're coming back, right?" Chan Young finding out the real reason why Crude Play didn't use his bass track was because they didn't want to implicate him was a sobering moment. He looked like he regretted everything he had done. Yoon's little kick at Chan Young's foot was cute. It is sweet how So Rim has her own problems, yet she still worries about Han Gyul and Crude Play. I admire how she accepts that she can't change what fans think of her. I know Chan Young needs to deal with his demons, but can't he at least issue a statement to soothe his fans? "I am NOT dating Mush & Co.'s Yoon So Rim. Please STOP defacing our Sole Music building." Though fans are just going to chalk it up to Oppa being forced to say that.
How much does Crude Play suck at playing their own instruments? Even untalented Jin Woo and Gyu Sun were allowed to play live, and they weren't ridiculed by the public. It all boils down to Crude Play being marketed wrong from day one. Instead of being promoted as "a genius! band with a genius! producer," their concept should have been "a kkotminam band with a genius! bassist and a genius! producer." Then the public would've never expected perfection. Though Han Gyul still would've, which will always be the obstacle in their friendship. Is In Ho taking drugs?! Don't leave him alone, Han Gyul! At least now we know another member owns a car. I was starting to think only Chan Young could drive.
These composer boys are ruining Mush & Co. I regrettably do not like Waiting for You or Shiny Boy. Waiting for You is too repetitive with no climax. What was the public's reaction to the song after Mush & Co.'s Music Sketchbook performance? Or are fans boycotting it over So Rim's scandal? I'm forever bitter Joy is the only person who gets MVs. Four out of five Joy songs have MVs with the exception of Shiny Boy (story of Chan Young's life). I'm equally bitter Shiny Boy and Waiting for You were attributed to Joy and not Mush & Co. Like, why is Crude Play, Crude Play, but Mush & Co., Joy? As if Jin Woo and Gyu Sun aren't ignored enough.
Everyone was atoning for their sins today, including Jin Hyuk. I would've never...

I've never really checked out the OSTs of this drama - interesting that you mention only Joy is in the MVs. Could it be because JW and KS aren't really the "main characters"? I find that even in the script, the plot focuses more on Crude Play and it's problems, and HG and SR and their problems, and then SR's problems with knowing that her friends aren't good enough for the company to want them. As much as their friendship is important to her I feel like JW and KS have always taken a bit of a backseat in the plot - as though KS were only a plot device for SJ to appear and go down the scandal plot by having her leak the photos.

@Dramaninja and a lot of it is image-management. Hiding your true self constantly in front of the video is not easy, but it can be done. However, over time, it's possible for the truth to unveil itself. But that truth can also be how the public view you with prejudice, and then fit the truth to their view. It's so complicated.

@GedSkaiKru Methinks (at least in the Hallyu-Kpop scene) that the word "scandal" is a kind of Konglish in that the mere act of being caught in a date is labeled a 'scandal' in Korea. This despite the two parties being single and adults. I also can't understand how it can be a scandal at all. Lol

Yes, you summed it up perfectly. Chanyoung was once again the main recipient of character growth today. I was honestly expecting a little more arguments and time in his pain, but this works as well. I was honestly surprised when he chose not to confess. Sometimes, not confessing is harder than confessing. And all 3 of them knew. Hangyul, through Chanyoung's looks and actions, knew he liked Sorim, and Sorim, right after the hug and his words, knew he liked her as well. He made the painful, but right decision. But both his pride, insecurities, and his feelings for Sorim are all a process, and while they won't dissapear right away, if he works on it, it'll be better. But dang, Chanyoung's scenes with Sorim really impressed me today.

I am thinking it the other way. Maybe there's not much time to actually tackle CY's bottled up feelings because of the many issues that the show must clear, most especially Crude Play's fake playing. I am concerned how writer-nim will tie the loose ends given that it's only 2 eps left without the feeling of being rushed. Anyway, i have a big faith to this show's production. If i can raise 100 thumbs up for this show, i will. Okay im exaggerating. *runs into the corner*

I thought the reason for the songs being attributed to joy is because she really sang it while the boys did not participate in the actual recording (session musicians did that). As for crude play songs, that's because they all had song lines and participated in the song. It's the fair thing to do and is probably the industry's rules

Yes, and that industry rule is known as Royalty. Joy is paid for every downloads or streaming of the song. If it is labelled as Much & Co, all 3 of them will be paid and that isn't fair, since Joy is the only person who's really working at it.

Well, to be fair, Joy did the singing in all of those songs attributed to her. You can't hear Song Kang or Park Jinhyuk sing or rap, and they most probably didn't play the instruments either. Crude Play was attributed as a whole as well because it's not just Sungjoo (who plays Shihyun) who sings, the other members sing/rap in the songs as well.

This episode, I feel like the characters had to face up to their own actions and the consequences, think about how the lies over the past 5 years have snowballed into the results today, and then make a decision on how they were going to continue. My mind is a bit of a mess after the episode (so many thoughts, no way to condense them properly) so forgive me if my comment makes no sense today.
On Chan Young: I'm just glad that he owned up to the fact that his negativity was hurting everyone else, even if I think he didn't show that much remorse for his irresponsible actions last episode, which in a way contributed to a lot of the negative press. When Yoon said that they hadn't used his bass track because they didn't want to implicate him, I too was surprised. I think CY is realizing how much he misunderstood his hyungs because he was too embroiled in his own negativity and this (along with SH's apology) is a step in healing his feelings. I'm all for CY facing up to his problems and growing out of them, so this was all good for me. I'm also happy that he respected SR and chose not to confess to her, which shows that he did genuinely care for her.
On President Yoo: I thought what she said made a lot of sense. It had been Crude Play's decision to debut even if they couldn't play live, so in a sense, they have nobody to blame. They can be "self-righteous" now and insist on telling the truth, but the fact is they made the decision themselves and it snowballed. And if they do reveal the truth now, it would be "irresponsible" in a certain sense, because so many depend on them for their payroll. It's kind of like lies to cover more lies, that were used to cover lies... And the fear of being found out is eating them inside out, but the guilt of ruining it all for everyone stops them from telling the truth. The thing is though, that they had been so young back then - the thought of being able to debut and live their dreams had probably overshadowed anything else. How can we blame them for that?
On Crude Play: That said, I did silently cheer for Yoon when he said he would never hand-sync again even if it took him 10 years. It's not a huge gesture, but it's the start to making right the lies they've been telling. I'm not sure if it's realistic (would your company let you stay inactive without bringing in profits?), but my heart's rooting for the boys. I wonder if Inho feels extra guilty because it was his drumming clip that got exposed. He seems the most worried about the live performance and something about him driving to Incheon was really fishy.
On Han Gyul: We already know why HG has always felt guilty. He made the decision that he thought would be best for his friends, agreeing to debut when they were not ready, but realizes it was selfish to do that just for his music. And watching his friends in pain now from the scandals makes it worse. It's interesting because SR has faced/will face the...

And watching his friends in pain now from the scandals makes it worse. It's interesting because SR has faced/will face the same problem - she thought that debuting together as Mush&Co would be best even if she was the only "genuine" one, but watching Crude Play now, she must be feeling worried about her decision as well.
On Yoo Na: I for one, like SH, do not believe that she's only in it for the music and not popularity. Without popularity, you would be nowhere and your music wouldn't have a chance to be heard. It's only realistic. Remember how worried she was when she was losing popularity/her CF deals?

I don't know, but I do think Shi Hyun was misunderstanding her because she hurt Han Gyul. He went a bit too far with that dig about her relationship with Mr. Choi. I believe she genuinely wanted to help. Not So Rim, but Han Gyul for sure. Like she said, she wants music and Han Gyul is music. It makes sense.

@jazlynn agree about your opinion on Yoona. Her characterization so far doesn't point to her overly bitter about HG-SR for her to head toward revenge route. Her option, though misguided and naive, was I think coming out of a sincere desire to make things right again. Whether it's Sole-N Music or Jin-hyuk or HG.

May 4, 2017 at 11:58 AM
But my issue with YN is that, how can she come uo with that particular offer to HG. They have a history for god's sake and plus she is well aware of the fact that SR does not feel HG working with YN comfortable at all. The more sensible offer would have been to make it to CY and nobody would bat an eyelid and similar results would be attained, except that she would not be K's girl.
I just see an opportunist in her today, unless ofcouse the writer surprises me yet again.
kzebal
May 4, 2017 at 12:42 PM
@dramaninja but she doesn't have much proof for Chan-young, while they can release a ton of proof with Hangyul, since it was true in the past. It's easier to make up a lie from the truth than fabricate it entirely. Also, Chanyoung fans are pissed off at Sorim for dating him, so him dating another girl won't help the matter. K, on the other hand, as a producer, doesn't have as rabid and posessive fans. So the only one really affected by the image would be Yoona, but she said she was more used to deal with it than Sorim. Does that help explain her plan a little better?
DramaNinja
May 4, 2017 at 2:01 PM
@kzebal it sure does. Thank you for bringing YN out of the darkside for me. But still I'm totally not onboard with her plan, it is flawed and wrong. If CY's fan's are as venomous, then YN dating K, would have no impact on SR's image, because then they would might think that SR is trying to break YN(another beloved celeb) and K apart. Coz, I don't see how HG and SR will ever come out later and say that they are dating without another messier uproar. Maybe YN did have good intentions, but it could snowball in the long run.

See, I just cannot think of her motives as being all that altruistic. She has repeatedly tried to make Sorim deliberately feel like poo because of Han Gyul and she has repeatedly tried to win him back as well. Even her own current boyfriend sees it. @Moriaelini But when had she tried to win HG back? She dumped him, and was only interested in him afterwards as her producer and ex-boyfriend. She felt jealous of how Sorim was able to change him the way she couldn't, but that was more about her pride than romantic jealousy.

She's still so much of a cipher to me. I feel like there was a moment of her relating to how much higher the expectations are for female idols and maybe even wanting to help So Rim but she plays her cards very close to the vest.

I agree about her wanting to help Jin-hyuk. Not only because helping him stay afloat means she can continue making music how she wants but because she actually does love him. And from episode 14, it's a little sad that he doesn't think he can rely on her like that. I feel like he's a little insecure about his relationship with her.

I so agree with you on President Yoo part...she kept her calm and is actually thinking at every step on how to move out of the situation without hurting the group too much ...unlike Choi who always targets the weakest points...but i hope she would now give them a chance to correct the mistakes they committed or the poor judgements they made..

This was the episode that distinguishes itself from being labeled as a youth drama. I was amazed with how the writer pulled it off, having all the issues front and center in one episode. The writer even included that confrontation of SH and Yoona. That's some balls there.

There is little here that resembles the source material. The main themes remained, however the dialogs, the logical flow of events, even the characters of the heroes (except for Sorim) are changed. The drama has its sweet moments, but I think the manga is infinitely better, with dialogs that I remember even after many years. You applaud the writer, but I think she has done a poor job, considering the great potential of the manga. I understand the need to change some things to make it more believable as a drama, more appropriate to the audience, but not to the point were you change 99 %. This is worse than what they did with Cheese in the Trap, at least there the first half of the drama resembled the original.
DramaNinja
May 4, 2017 at 2:08 PM
@dara but why does it need to resemble the original. The author wrote it for a different audience at a different time. We are getting a unique story, that is refreshing and something that has not been already done and loved by many. I haven't read the manga, but I have come across many manga readers who appreciate bith these works for their individuality when they see it as separate works. Just my opinion.

DramaNinja, I don't know where this comment will land but i'll try anyway..."but why does it need to resemble the original" - the dialogs in the manga are so interesting and original, that I don't understand why they had to replace them with ones that are rather boring and uninspired. As I said, I understand the necessity to change some things when adapting the material to the screen, I think the first part of Cheese in the Trap was great at it, it was not identical, but pretty close to the webtoon. I'm ok with Riko (Sorim) being 18 instead of 16, with Shun (Shi-hyun) being cute instead of drop dead gorgeous and extremely cool, even with replacing Riko's parents with a grandmother, though Riko's dad in the manga was comedic gold. I understand the need to somewhat tone down the mature content for the younger audience of the kdrama (No need to show Aki and Mari in bed together, for example). But to leave only the basic themes and some of the character's complexity (which are still addictive hence the great number of comments here) and to replace almost everything else with flat, clichee lines? Why would you do it? I honestly don't understant. Plus changes to the characters that are breaking the logical flow of the story, making hard to understand why one would act this way (HG acting like a jerk towards his friends telling them to fake playing the instruments when he himself carries the same trauma and complex of inferiority? Why was it needed to make HG a genius producer, mashing his character with that of Jin-hyuk? Was him being a genius songwriter, like in the manga, not enough? In order to appear in a kdrama as the main hero, you need to be a double genius now?) etc.

I was about to sleep, but then I saw your comment so here I am.
I loved CITT the webtoon and was pretty sad that the drama derailed, as it not make sense after a point.
But here though I have not read the manga, I will still try..
•Dialouges are unispired and boring? Well I beg to differ. Maybe it was poetic in the manga. But interactions here have a very slice of life feel. Which I love.
• SR being 18 is a must. Or else all you could read in this comment section, including from me would be that it is weird. Maybe I would have even dropped this Show. Also, SH baybee is smoking hot. We have different tastes in men.
•Cliche? What cliche? And you know my heart already aches and hurts with all the emotions that pile up watching each episode. I and many others probably wouldn't be able to take on more complexity from a 16 episode(only ?) drama. Plus whatever plot point they have introduced they have done complete justice to it.
•Didn't HG explain in this very episode why he asked his friends to fake play instruments or was it the next? I'm kinda sleepy.
•He is a brilliant music Producer who also writes great songs. AR Rehman an Oscar winning Music director from my place does the same. Not improbable. And JH is more like a manager and a producer in the sense that he produces the band and not it's music. They are two different things.
I might seem overly diffensive, but I am just stating facts as I see them. ?
Dara
May 4, 2017 at 4:52 PM
The dialogues from the manga are not poetic:), I'd say they are closer to the style of the manga Nana in originality than to the other more typical shojo mangas. By clichees I didn't mean the complexity of events, they kept them in the drama, rather the lines spoken by the characters, which are in their majority different from the manga. And some make HG sound whiny, where Aki was not. In the manga Aki was a genius songwriter who had a dream to play simple, unpretentious songs with his friends in a band. He was not hoping for or expecting the huge success that came to them almost imediately and was conflicted about it. He was just starting his producer career and it is not impossible to say that he would probably be very good at it. However the genius producer who contributed to their success, had a talent at finding musical talents and was manipulating unscrupulousy those around him was Jin-Hyuk. They both have already very complex characters, so there was no need to mash up their traits and create illogical behaviour. As for Shun/Shi-hyun, Shun is colder and cooler (though his devotion to Aki is undeniable), but that is probably harder to play. Even the Shun from the jmovie was rather cute than cool. Shi-hyun reminds me more of the Shun from the jmovie than Shun from the manga. As for Riko, as I said, I'm ok with her being 18 in the drama, it doesn't create that much controversy and doesn't change much the flow of the story.

@Dara, Hi! I read the manga although I dropped it because the scanlations were slow. I do see where you are coming from, however, I don't think that the Drama is any less a gem than the Manga. People have different preferences and to push your opinion that the Manga is infinitely better to people who haven't read it is kind of, sorry for this, not nice.
If I am going to be blunt, I prefer the Drama, yes, I am not the best person to give this opinion because I didn't even finish the Manga.
The things I like that deviated though:
*HanGyeol is getting out of his cocoon thinking for himself instead of Aki always bottling things up only to 'cause misunderstandings left and right and for Shun to have to always give him advice.
*I love that HanGyeol clearly draws the line on Yoona, whereas there was this one time when Mari was wrecked during her live performance, Aki actually went home with her and played the piano for her, when he was already dating Riko! What?
*In the Drama, Soorim is always at the top of HanGyeol's priorities, now, I think even more than his music, whereas in the Manga Aki let's Riko go home with Shinya because he was so busy writing songs. Okay, that is probably ideal in shoujo manga standard, but in real life I'd kick his ass for neglecting me like that. Sorry.
*JinHyuk is a lot more relatable, I do question his tendency to manipulate but he has potential for change, whereas Takagi is soooo creepy, he took advantage of Mari and made her his lover even while married and have kids, why? Because he knew how damaged Mari was and then if that's not enough, she set him up with Aki so Aki could write about love *shivers*
*Yoona is not downright hateable, I don't like her but I don't want to shove her in a wall, but Mari, she had a rough start, I get it, but she's so mental. She won't make up her mind, she doesn't want to lose Takagi because he's the first one to acknowledge her but also doesn't want to let go of Aki because she wants him and she feels insecure about Riko's age.
Sorry, I need to end this post because I don't to sound like I'm slandering the Manga. ?

GedSkyKru, to each his own, I guess. I already said here before that the manga, in some aspects, is much darker than the drama. I was not creeped out by the producer Takagi, who, having a wife and child, was sleeping with the idol Mari. I've seen enough of such types in real life so it doesn't shock me. The same with manipulative people. The mangaka, to her credit, doesn't seek excuses for their behaviour, just shows us their character and is letting us be the judge. For Aki and his cocoon, being sometimes a blockhead and insensitive to others is part of his character. Like having a better insight is part of Rico and Shun's characters. These are traits of their personality, how can one change them at will? Riko and Shun both accept and love Aki as he is, even though it is frustrating for them at times (well, they are also not perfect, so it goes both ways). The same goes for the fact that Aki tends to space out whenever inspiration hits him, forgeting to eat and sleep for days. It goes together with his genius talent, take that away and Aki will not be Aki. Riko understood that and was not complaining, after all, she fell for him because of his talent for music. If Aki one day lost his obsession with music and focused only on prioritising his girlfriend, would she still love him as much? As for Aki going to Yoona when she was having a mental breakdown, well he did not go to cheat on Riko, he went to help a person he used to love in the past who was going through a very hard time, after being begged by Takagi. A noble idiocy, especially considering how hurt he was by her cheating, but it shows his good heart and his willingness to forgive. Sorim did a similar thing in the drama, taking CH to console him when Aki was playing on the stage in his place. That being said, the manga is not perfect and has its own annoing moments, but I was still extremely excited when I read that a drama will be filmed based on it. When I finally saw the drama, my excitement kind of went down. Maybe If I hadn't read the manga, I would have reacted differently? Who knows.

Agree! I've been reiterating this point since the previous episodes. I look forward to this writer's future projects. Or past projects? I wonder if he/she is a newbie or a veteran.
Anyhow, it's not easy to pull off a youth drama that balances naivete and reality, but this one manages to confront the darker issues without losing the essence of what's it like to be young and carefree.

Yes! I wasn't sure at first, but every week they manage to get better and better. The growth and fleshing out of issues with the characters has been so great. Chan-young being the perfect example. I know most of us not too long ago were annoyed at his behaviour, but how they showed his growth and maturity was really great and thoughtful. Some shows would have had a weird, illogical jump/ change in behavior to move the plot. But his growth made sense. You can see how he got from point A to point B. That's what makes it so much more powerful.

I love that moment when Chan-young looked so confused and then plesantly surprised that Sorim would want to take him somewhere she liked. And then he smirked and they went in the elevator. And I knew the drama was sort of wanting us to wonder if something scandalous was about to happen, but I also knew this drama was too good to do it like that. So I laughed so much at how flustered Chan-young was when they ended up at Grandma's place. LMAO.
Sometimes I think not saying something even though it's understood by both party is a way to prevent you to put out something you can't take back. Since his feelings were going to be rejected anyway, it spared him the inevitable rejection, and spared both of them the irreversible change a confession would make in their relationship.

Speaking up is a necessity when the other person doesn't know. In this case, she acknowledged his feelings, without being comfortable with them. And he acknowledged that and let her know he's letting them go by not speaking up. So many underlying messages under all that silence.

I love this drama so much! Kudos to the writer-nim, this drama keeps getting better and better each week.. I love how our OTP becomes each other's strength when all the problems keep coming crashing down.. What I love the most is how this drama makes a simple story and plot that have been used all the time and still managed to make it unique.. The characters are so complex and refreshing, all the problems didn't drag out for many many episodes and I love love that this writer never leave a question hanging.. Crude Play fake play plot gets the spotlight this time, I actually kept wondering for the past weeks whether this plot will be resolved in the upcoming episodes and here it is.. It's like the writer knows what we're hoping for this drama.. Oh and I remember in the previous episode's recaps one of the comment nailed why the Crude Play member didn't use Chan Young's bass in their videos.. But I'm really worried about In Ho because his condition is a lot like mine (I literally cried when I heard he got an accident).. I don't like seeing him hurt and hurting himself..

I'm back. Hahaha ha ha. I didn't have the chance to comment on episode 12 since I was out of town and the signal was so bad. I have so much to say but I reached the recap with 500+ comments. Decided to just read them. Lol. You guys are overwhelming. Makes me want to comment too. ?
My random thoughts this episode 13:
▪ I want to hug CRUDE PLAY is all. ?
▪ Chanyoung
- He's pretty much redeemed this episode, I feel how he was conflicted with his position in Crude Play and I commend him for talking it out with the boys and reconciled with them right away. I wanna hug him when he was about to confess his feelings to Sorim but stopped himself and accepted it for sorim's peace of mind. I was kinda harsh with my comments on chanyoung for the past episodes, but i wanna hug him right now. ㅠㅠ
▪ Sorim♡Hangyeol
- The portrayal of the netizen/fans criticizing/slamming idols was so on point. They're extreme. I feel bad for Sorim getting on the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Hangyeol feeling helpless about Crude Play's scandal was heartbreaking to watch. He's been shouldering everyone's burden since he started Crude Play and now he can't do anything even if he wanted to help. But Hangyeol comforting Sorim and vice versa were the highlights of this episode (at least for me). Those two scenes were so heartfelt. ♡ I love how Hangyeol and Sorim became each other's anchor. If it ain't love I don't know what it is. Just please don't separate them.
▪ Yuna
- I was kinda unprejudiced to her but I didn't like how she worded it. She's asking Hangyeol to "use" her. It's never okay to use someone, for whatever reason. This is the arc I'm most scared of coz in the movie (I can't remember in the manga) ***spoiler*** mari and aki will have a faux relationship to save riko's career ***end spoiler*** I hope they don't go there. ㅠㅠ
▪ Jinhyuk
- It was too late for him to apologize to everyone he wronged for his personal gain. If only he was patient, plans long term for his artists, none of these would happen. I agree with Ceo Yoon, he should decide if he'll be a businessman or a musician. He's only hurting his artists in the long run.
▪ Ceo Yoon
- She's a business woman, so her actions are all justified however harsh she carry out her plans. She's firm on her decisions and brutally honest while running her company. Her probably only weakness is Inwoo.
▪ Inwoo
- We all know he decided to not do the album because of Hangyeol. I want more scenes of them together, and maybe with Sorim too. Cutest scene was with him revealing he's Hangyeol's dad. Sorim was so cute.
I'm having withdrawals already. I don't want this drama to end. ㅠㅠ

Jinhyuk is more human then CEO Yoo, in that he still feels guilt. But as a businesswoman, having no guilt is definitely an asset. I love how it makes her a lot more effective and decisive than him. She's such a strong woman in dramaland, there's a reason why she's above everyone else. She makes all the calls and solve their problems. The question is whether or not the problem she solves are the most important ones, or if there are even more important issues within themselves she can't solve with her business decisions.

Oooh. Nice one. It's true she can solve all the business problems. But their business relies heavily on people, and those people are governed by emotions. If she can't solve their emotional problems, her business will be affected.

I feel like a broken tape recorder because every week I'm waxing lyrical about how great the plot advancement, character development and lack of prolonged angst is, but I can't help it!
So many things happened this episode!(the hr just zipped by!)
I'm so glad the story is so much more than just the relationship between Han Gyul and So Rim- the bromantic moments between Crude Play were totally daebak! ❤
I expected Chan Yeong to be a lot more unreasonable and unpersonable, but he totally wasn't- somehow they managed to make me like him again! He finally grew up, the scenes with him and So Rim were well done and a pleasant surprise! Also, gosh darn it the Crude Play boys really do care for him, the silly insecure doofus! *happy tears*
Like sailorjumun I just want to squish my little Crude Play Puppies up, wrap them in cotton wool and protect them from the Big Bad World. (Mush and co too.) I'm sad for the accident but urgh Shi Hyun's expression during his rehearsal speech for the press conference about their live playing just about broke my heart, I can't imagine seeing him say it for "real". Got to get away from the lies!
Finally, Jin Hyuk is having to deal with the consequences of his actions. I haven't decided who I think is worse for our Puppies (both Crude Play and Mush & Co)- him or CEO Yoo, but they both have their manipulative snake side, so perhaps neither? Maybe Daddy In Woo can just take over both of them? LOL. But I do like that the boys are growing a spine (especially Han Gyul) and are willing to question their way of "making music" and money and hopefully we will see the boys have their real dreams come true by the end of this drama! (Pretty pls!)

JH and Yoo are probably both terrible for them but if we look at it from a business POV, at least Yoo will be smarter about it and it mayyyy turn out better? Hopefully. I think the problem is if Dad takes over they're probably not going to be very profitable, but if the job is left in the hands of Yoo they're just going to be hurt. Why is there no in between? Is the in between the flip flopping between business man and artiste that will cause them to fail, like what Yoo said?
Side note: agree with you, my heart broke when SH's voice sort of cracked while rehearsing the speech. The guilt and shame of it must have been so difficult to bear. ? can I just give him a hug? Please?

My biggest grouse about Yoo is the continual lying and reluctance to actually speak to the boys to see how they feel. Blaming young kids for making a "bad choice" previously, seriously made my blood boil. I hate it when people shirk responsibility- and darn it woman, your subordinate and your management style sucks! Stop adding to the Puppies guilt already! ?
Honestly, Crude Play is one of her biggest names at the moment, and yet I don't see much sincerity in her eyes, just dollar signs.
And lezah, gotta get in line. Looking at the comments lots of people wanna give the Puppies a hug. May need to wait a while. ?

@michykdrama - Is there a fastpass for the line?
I think Yoo is way out of her line with guilt-tripping. I get that tons of people supported CP in getting them to where they are. But let's be real... this is not about giving back to those people- it's all about the bottom line and financial interests for Yoo. So for her to suggest that the guys are being selfish is ridiculous.

I feel like CEO Yoo can't afford this 'feeling' especially that everything is falling apart and she's the only one basically holding everything together as Jin Hyuk looks like he's completely lost as well so I can't really blame her, or hate her for that. Well, to be honest, I am really on her side because even though she hurts people, at least she's upfront with them and doesn't sugarcoat it. She meant business and she does business well. The problem though for me, is that I am not quite sure if she's being helpful or she'll destroy Crude Play.

I guess she is sort of holding things together but honestly, it wouldn't have ended up like this if she and JH hadn't been greedy for success from the start. And from long ago (In Woo's time) she has clearly shown that she values business over music. She can make a name for an artist, but in the end is the artist a true musician or just one for show? I guess if all her artists want is fame and fortune then it's ok, but she doesn't care one bit about actual music or integrity. And so while yeah, she is doing her best to salvage things, I really still dislike how she doesnt really care for much other than commercial success. So she isn't right for "true musicians" like In Woo and the kind of people Crude Play want to be.
GedSkaiKru
May 4, 2017 at 10:46 AM
@mitchykdrama, well there's that, she's all business and mostly no fun, except with In Woo. But look what happened to JinHyuk who couldn't decide whether to be a musician or a businessman... There's no falacy to CEO Yoo, her intents are clear and she doesn't waver.
While CEO Yoo and Jin Hyuk's greed led to the detriment of most artists in Sole Music, at least we can all agree that we viewers are so hooked with their smarts, right? It's enjoyable to see who'll win, sorry Crude Play boys. ?

About Chanyoung being at peace: I love how this drama resolves conflicts. It never drags it more than it should. And never milks the histrionics or dramatics more than it needs. It gives the characters the emotional catharsis that they need. It let them express all the emotions they have bottled up in years. And that is enough. There are no excessive dramatics or drama queens. Just the natural letting out of frustrations. The catharsis give the characters the self-reflection they needed, and the others, the understanding of another's struggle they didn't know about. Then, everything is resolved with unspoken understanding. It uses arguments and quarrels just enough to resolve misunderstandings and establish mutual understanding and then everyone is mature about it. It's so freaking refreshing to see.

Thank you for the recap, @SailorJumun!
I don’t usually post my Kdrama fix on any of my social media accounts because I know not everyone can relate to me, but I broke this rule because I could not contain my feels for this drama, especially this episode! My Crude Play boys!
Warning: Loooong post ahead.
What really triggered my feels for this episode was the Crude Play boys; I just can’t help but root for them, but at the same time I want repercussions for the lies. As a fangirl myself, I know what it feels like to be in a fandom, you invest time and money, defend them if needed, even fight for them, just so they could have the best, being no.1 on music shows and awards, etc.. Imagine the betrayal their fans felt! Yes, I had my fair share of crying moments because of the groups I stan, I’m looking at you EXO. Yeah, different story, but this is a fangirls heart, it’s sometimes overbearing and irrational, but we’re really loyal. Back to the topic…this is why I want Crude Play to face consequences which is not easy because as a viewer, I am well aware of the backstory! I know they’re victims as well. Why is this so complicated? What are you doing to me, show? Whatever it is, go on, I can take it.
Chanyoungie, see? They care about you! I love the look on his face when they revealed why they were using HanGyeol’s bass for Real Crude Play videos. With me in 1, 2, 3…awwwww. Why does it feel like he’s got his inner peace this episode? He’s so mature and understanding about Soorim’s dilemma knowing full well she can’t reciprocate his feelings. Major thumbs up!
Also, JinHyuk, I do feel sorry for you, but you had this coming. If you only viewed your talents as people, instead of goods to sell, tsk. You have the potential to be a great mentor, but yeah, I want to root for you as well but you needed this lesson. CEO Yoo, you badass, and I don’t even hate you, what sorcery is this?
I’ve read somewhere that Soorim was a little sidelined this episode and was just going with the flow, well, the title of this drama is “The Liar…”, so our main character is HanGyeol and how his lover changed him. We’re done with that, we’ve been shown how solid Soorim and HanGyeol have become. Now let’s get to the meat of the story. This is the thing I like most in the show, well except for the well rounded characters, it always manages to make the stakes high enough, and that its characters are forced to deal with the problems head-on.

That reporter is annoying, but that's just because he's messing with our Crude Play. In real life, I can't really blame him for putting his nose in when he sniffs something suspicious, or for him to post the truth out. It's actually Sole / WHO Entertainment who are the bad guys here for concealing the truth. But somehow, this drama makes me root for them whenever they manage to fend off the press.

You know why I love this drama so much? It's because of how fresh it feels, all while keeping everything I love about its genre at its optimal level.
It's not innovative per se, but see what I mean... While most other youth dramas about music are almost always about growing up when you're young and making friends through music, which is a concept I'm totally a sucker for, this drama is truly about dealing with the consequences of your decision from when you were young, and how friendship can be affected in your pursuit of music. In other words, the "afterwards." I started this drama expecting the usual feels I would get from dramas like Dream High, Shut up Flower Boy Band, and more. It's what I wanted, it's what I love. This drama is giving me so much more. It's something I didn't know I needed, and I didn't know I would love, but boy do I love it.

As much as I dislike what CEO Yoo had to say, I can't really deny it either. The adults were at fault for pressuring the younger ones to go into deception, but it's also true the young ones participated in the deception regardless. They probably thought things would get better, that they could do what they want once they got fame, but instead, they just dug themselves deeper and deeper into the hole of deception. Like she said, they didn't just earn fame and money, but also responsiblity for an entire company.

The fact that such a huge responsability lies on the matter of one huge lie is definitely too much burden to bear.
And the blame lies mainly on the adults for pushing that lie in the first place, and thinking it's sustainable. The kids might not be innocent, but the adults bear more responsiblity, imo. It's unfair they keep pushing the kids to do what they want and take on the brunt of the burden.

Namwhan
May 4, 2017 at 2:20 PM
@kzebal But the adults also get the money, probably more money. And get to make the decisions. The fault is proportional to how much responsilibity one bears, and the adults had more responsiblity in all of this.

OMG this!!! As a fangirl myself I agree with everything you said, we spend so much time, money and basically part of our life to the fandom because we believe that everything that they do and accomplish come from their effort to be the best.. So when we heard our favorite idol getting recognized for what they do best whether its in singing or playing music, it's because of their own effort to bring a perfect package to their fans.. If something like this happens to me, I would feel incredibly angry and embarrassed.. Like if I always bragging about how my idol is one of the best singer or musicians to my friends and then I found out that everything they're, everything they've done are fake I would be very disappointed.. But I can't exactly place them at the fault cause nobody knows what happens backstage..

Just some thoughts:
•That look that HG gets whenever he hears SR singing gets me every time.
•But then sometimes think Han Gyul and Chan Young are the actual OTP.
•I loved Soo Yeon's face when she brought in CY into the dorm, like yeah, over here is the line for all the guys in love with So Rim.
•Kudos to Shin Hyun for his loyalty to HG; he was not having any of Yoona's cockamamie scandal schemes and he let her know it.
•It's interesting that CEO Yoo brought up the concept of choice when it came to Crude Play "deciding" to let other musicians play their music. They really were kids and if the choice was to debut the fast way or not at all, it was basically coercion.
•The reveal that Real Crude Play put in HG's bass playing to protect CY was both touching and funny. CY gets to know how much they really love him but HG has to hear a different take on how crappy his bass playing is.
•It's funny that CY always felt like he was not as important to the band as HG. But HG was never in the trenches playing/pretending to play perfectly on the stage like the rest of the band. And he didn't realize this until he was told to keep away from the press conference.

I feel so proud of Sorim and Hangyul, both of them, for both prioritizing Chanyoung first. A lesser drama could have made them focus on each other instead, but they knew where the priority lied at that moment. Both Sorim and Hangyul's first concern was Chanyoung's well-being instead of the cliche romantic or jealousy stuff. And this is why they are both good people who love and deserve each other. And this is why this drama is so good.

When I kept telling people that Chanyoung had the most potential for character growth and change in the drama, they wouldn't believe and instead opted to call him names, call him evil, pervert, etc. Well, if this episode doesn't show that he's a genuinely kind person with faults and insecurities like everyone else, then I don't know who is. I do think it was a bit too fast; I would have like to see a bit more agonization or time spent, but there are only 2 episodes left so I see why. But damn, he really was great.
First, confessing that he knows the Crude Play members and Hangyul are good guys, and it was his own desire to become more than just a fill-in member. That's why he became greedy, and that's why he wanted to stand out from Hangyul. I hope through this break that he finds his concentration and rest, and regains his confidence because like you said, it's a process. His insecurities and pride isn't going to go away in one night, but it's a process, and through his interactions with Hangyul I can see it happening.
As for Sorim, he made the tough, but correct choice. He does really like Sorim; you can see it by his eyes and actions. Sometimes, not confessing is more difficult than confessing, and we can see that he did want to confess. However, he took her into account and how she would feel, and that's a step in the right direction. On top of that, right after that hug, she looked like she knew what he was going to say. However, obviously, just because of this, his feelings aren't going away. It's a process, and to be honest, they see each other almost every day so it'll be even more difficult. But his character growth overall was stunning today.

Strangely, I've never read comments bashing CY that much before, was it here on DB? I must have missed those comments out (so many comments on every recap, argh!).
I guess the difficult thing was that even if he had the most potential for growth, he wasn't exactly the most likeable character, especially with what he was doing. I agree with you though that he's always been portrayed as a realistic version of a human with his own flaws and insecurities. But it didn't make him more likeable for me even if I understood completely where he was coming from.
I think the sadder thing is reading comments saying that the Crude Play boys should have done this/that to prevent CY from feeling hurt. Just because the script focused on CY doesn't take away from the fact that the Crude Play boys were all fighting their own large battles and there's no way to say whose hurt is greater than the other. (I think the next episode shows that clearly). What I didn't like about CY was that his negativity was hurting everyone around him.
But I agree, he's growing and he's growing out of it well. It's fantastic to see that because what I wanted wasn't for CY to disappear (not a CY hater) but to see him really change and grow. This was a great episode for that!

About Crude Play, Yoon might seem the silliest of them all, but that's deceptive. I really love how determined he is. If you remember from the very beginning, he was always determined to play live one day, and never gave that thought up.
Last week, when they were teasing Chanyoung on the couch, he said "You know we'll play live with you someday right?" It was just a brief line in passing, but it touched me. And this week, he's also the one who told Inho that they will play live no matter what. I love how the writer wrote him.
He might feel like the least serious of the Crude Play boys, but his sense of pride and determination about music is no joke. Such brilliant writing.

I agree. First, he did seem exhausted. He seemed honestly stressed and just done with everything that had been going on and wanted to get it off his chest. He accepted that there are things in life that can't be changed no matter what.
As for Sorim, I liked how even without him confessing, she found out he liked her. She wasn't oblivious to it. And she made it clear that she respects him, feels sorry for him, and wants to remain close, but she can't be with him in a romantic sense, and chanyoung realized this.

What i saw though was just a very exhausted Chanyoung. I felt that when he hugged Sorim. So exhausted in fact that he just decided to empty himself, which is also why he needed the break and let his feelings for Sorim on pause. This is maybe why I felt like it wasn't rushed, and also the timing was just about right as the boys need him rn on their side.

While my OTP is Hangyul and Sorim, I personally love Chanyoung's character so viewers bashing Chanyoung (in a forum I'm in, people were pretty critical or downright hate him) or complaining about his story make me sad. Yes, he's had horrible moments but I get where he's coming from even when I don't agree with him. But, damn, I just refuse to accept or call or even mention this drama as fluff anymore. It just twists my heart in different directions.
I just loved the boys being there for each other and their interactions this episode. Shi hyun being protective of han gyul to yoona. Chan young giving advice to han gyul with best intentions. I am so glad they are finally breaking the barriers between them and genuinely bonding. Shi hyun apologizing to chan young. Yoon telling in ho that he will never let others play for him again and that he should just follow is friend. How awesome is crude play! Bromance at its best! ♥

I LOVED all the Han Gyul-Chan Young and Crude Play 5 talks in this ep. So relieved that CY redeemed himself from that forced hug to actually be conciderate and not confess to So Rim.
When HG said he wrote the songs with CY's bass in mind, it was such a wonderful moment between the two. I feel like HG has always, constantly been reaching out to him and now CY has finally accepted his friendship. The bar-talk was so heartwarming as well as Shi Hyun's apology. The entire time I was so frustrated that the guys didn't just talk and sort out the hurt and misunderstandings, so it was a great pay-off to finally see CY acknowledging that the others aren't just to blame for everything and SH acknowledging that they hurt him in the beginning.
So Rim frustrated me though. Her bringing CY home and being all vague about HG with her grandma etc made her seem like a two-timer. I get that she's young, but she actually knew what she was doing wrong when she did it, but did it anyway. At least with HG he only realizes it afterwards and then quickly tries to correct his mistakes. But she knew what she was doing and why she shouldn't be doing it. I'm glad HG understood her intentions and just worried about CY instead of getting all jealous, but after all he's done to push Yoo Na away, I feel it's unfair of SR not to be more clear with CY. Even if it's out of concern for him, it just felt like she was close to cheating. But that may just be me?

My reactions was very similar to Sorim's actions at the beginning of the episode. But I think the one redeeming nature of Sorim is that to her- her love for HG is so obvious that she might not see how her actions could be misleading to CY and misinterpreted to others? But of course, she's also learning the hard way as she's entering the entertainment world that her actions will be misinterpreted again and again- ultimately leading to her loss of innocence...

Maybe I've seen too many dramas to really care for love triangles. 98% of the time we all know how it's gonna end anyway, so I just get annoyed. At least unless the third wheeler doesn't try to impose their feelings on anyone or manipulate anyone because of how much they "looove" them. So maybe I just don't like the angst of it, I guess? If it stays angst-free, I'm usually fine with it.

@kaybee but good angst can be really good. The couple past episodes had good angst for example. I think it's inevitable that if you put a great girl in the middle of guys, there will almost certainly be a few who will fall for her, and fight for her. It's almost math at this point.

As for SoRim - I do agree at an earlier comment - one way to kill the mood was to hang with grandma/parents. But I don't know the writer's intention of having her NOT contact HG - at all!! I saw it like she was protecting Chanyoung. He just quit the band after all. She wasn't sure how Hangyul would react, or if he would run to them and cause a scene. It's like having a friend get into trouble, and just making some time to take care of him, and because he trusts you, to not involve other friends (even if they're close) into the matter. Like even if you're friends, I would want to trust someone I went to not to go babble to the other person about what I'm doing. She texted Gyusun because he's not directly involved, but Hangyul was part of the problem so it's different.

I actually appreciates SR for accompanying CY when he needs it even when she didn't contact HG. Love is great, but friends are equally important. What she did was a loyalty of a friend, being around when she's in need. I actually like how that when CY's on the verge of breaking down, SR and HG both places him first. SR knew CY needed someone by his side and she seems to be the perfect candidate, and HG too knew about it that's why when he left SR's place, he mentioned he'll have to care for CY today and SR acknowledges that. Since CY's emotion level is unstable in this case, therefore I can understand why SR did so.

This was such a satisfying episode for me. And while I miss the cuteness overload that Sorim and HG usually provides, I'll let it take a backseat for now if we can get into some meaty issues.
It was like the writers decided to read the comments in Dramabeans and addressed a bunch of issues that beanies were concerned about.
CY's self-realization and self-awareness was commendable. I love that he's showing a lot of maturity, although I'm a little worried that it's resignation, maybe, rather than maturity. I also love that Hangyul is looking out for him. I just need these two to get along and support one another openly.
JH is starting to show signs of reflecting on his poor management of his artists. I mean- we all knew he cared about them all along- he was just doing a piss poor job of meeting their needs. I'm hoping that right now he's not just going to give up all together and let the CEO have her way. I mean- he got Crude Play into this mess. It's his job to get them out, right?
Crude Play proved that they weren't a bunch of jerks and were looking out for CY all along when they didn't include him in Real Crude Play sessions. I'm also loving that we're really addressing their issue about not playing their own songs full on. It's a rich story line and I feel really bad for the guys. They want to do the right thing, but the right thing seems extremely blurry right now.
I also had an "oof" moment when I realized that Sorim may be in Sole Entertainment now and now friendly with Crude Play. But she was first and foremost a fan. So the news about them not playing their own songs must have hit her so hard. And to learn that Hangyul had lied again. But again, one of the loveable and mature things about Sorim is that she's quick to understand and forgive. So that scene where she sings "It's Ok" in front of HG was particularly moving for me. I know some people could see her ability to quickly forgive as a weakness about her, but I think it's actually her greatest strength and what sets her apart from everyone else.

I didn't understand CY at first, but now I get what he means. He never got to do something he really wanted, out of his own initiative. Replacing HG
was not his idea, CP wasn't his music, and even Mush&Co whom he was the producer didn't go his way. There was nothing in his life musically that was an idea he could feel like he owned. And that can really lead to an identity crisis for a gifted musician like himself.

I want to feel for Chan Young, it was his good right to take a break from the band after all but man, did his decision bring on a shit storm. Hate for So Rim, hate and a lot of stress for the band and now In ho is even contemplating something very dangerous.
Also, not that surprised that the Crude Play boys didn't choose CY's recording of the bass because of the reason that CY thought they did. I had wanted it to be a misunderstanding and thankfully it was.
CY's hour of wisdom kind of bothered me at some points....he seems all understanding when HG tells him that he writes his songs also with his bass in mind but then continues on to put his plushie on So Rim's bed. When Shi Hyun finally apologizes for their first meeting he acts as if that wasn't necessary anyways and he knew hoe SH felt and feels but we saw him in episodes before agonizing about just these first moments when they met.
He tells So Rim not about his feelings which is good because that's what she wants but he still just has to tell HG that he will meet So Rim to tell her something in a way that will obviously make HG misunderstand, obviously aiming to make him jealous.
He calls HG out of the room the band is in to tell him that they can't understand the other's feelings because they both have never faked their talents which is mature and all.........but CY...buddy...aren't we going to talk about how you completely misunderstood the recording and threw yourself a big pity party cause of it??
I don't know....don't hate me because of this but I still can't get behind him....I like the actor but I don't think the character will ever be my favorite. How should I say this..... "Being Yoda it felt like Anakin Skywalker pretended. Hmhm." ?

Hmm... I am not a fan of Chanyoung but I've always given him the benefit of the doubt, so maybe it was easy for me to accept this 'new' him.
I also think that it was fitting for him to lecture HG about not knowing what it really feels like for CR members, they never played fake afterall. Remember that this is the guy who felt like he's a replacement from day 1, and even though everybody dismissed it and said it's not true, those words sounded like a lie to him because the people saying it were not standing in his shoes and feeling the odd-man-out feeling he was feeling. (So much feeling, lol)
When he finally exhausted all of his negativity though and wanted to start from zero (this is how I interpreted his need to take a break), then, was he able to view things much clearer and as he was able to let go of his resentment, Shi Hyun's apology, although needed, has already been given without it being actually said.
All those scandals were 'cause by Sejung btw. Especially the confirmation that In Ho was really playing the drums. Butterfly effect. ✌

You know, when Chanyoung spole to Hangyul about all the pleasure you get from being on the stage, playing the instruments and hearing the sounds live, the cheers, and being on stage with your friends... it occured to me that it wasn't only about Chanyoung feeling like a stand-in. Maybe he also
felt guilt for taking away that pleasure from Hangyul and has been harboring that guilt for years. Is it possible?

That's a really great perpective. Chanyoung's motivations are really complex, it's hard to point his actions down because although he feels rivalry with HG, I feel like he also respects him. Sigh, their love-hate relationship make it seem like their the main OTP leads. Lol.

Thank you Hangyul for telling Chanyoung that Crude play's "real music" always had Chanyoung's bass in mind. He needed to hear that. He needed to know he belonged in Crude Play just as well as the other members, if not more, for being the actual one who played for real.

I think he was teasing hangyul when he told him was going to talk with soo rim its so much fun seeing jealous han gyul. His fathers also enjoyes messing with him. But hang yul doesnt let it affect his relation with soo rim. It showts that both of them are completely commited to each other.

I think it's one part messing with HG, another part wanting HG to suffer a bit more since he "won" and that's a petty sort of revenge. Which I will not begrudge him of. After that heartbreak (did you see how he pouted in his car when he left Sorim :( ), I'm not going to blame him for inflicting a little bit of revenge

Random moments of brilliance this episode :
• SR taking CY to her own house and effectively saving him and us all from furthering CY's misery. Clever little cookie ain't she!
• The CP guys actually having a sitting down to discuss all their issues, not once but twice and SH going and apologising to him personally. Better late than never.
• CY moment of realisation that his band mates left out his bass segment so as to not get him into trouble. So subtle. So satisfying.
• Annoying Se Jung's actions becoming the instrument of revelation of CP's facade. So well tied up Writer-nim. Kudos!
• CY exploding truth bombs everywhere. So cool. JH totally had to hear that.
• SH standing up for HG infront of YN. He is the perfect Wingman. I so loved the entire exchange. I would have thrown the bottle right back on her face...But still well played SH.
• Yoon and IH's little exchange. You guys break me. ?

I loved that part where shi hyun told off yoona too. No matter how many differences they may have between them, they won't let a third part take advantage of the other person. Those are the best kind of friendships out there. But I don't want him to call yoona sunbae. Maybe noona? Or yoona shi? Or sammonim (lol) (I mean madam in korean. Dono if i am pronouncing it right)? Sunbae to him should only be soo yeon, lol. :P Also, the actor playing shi hyun is just super charismatic. I want to see all the actors here in other projects but especially him. I love how Shi Hyun called Yoo Na out on her intentions when she suggested being seen as Han Gyul's girlfriend. Even though Han Gyul is trying to find a solution to the hate that So Rim is getting, he knew that she wouldn't appreciate lying to everyone even more. I'm so glad we didn't go down that trope because of all the mess that would happen later.
I'm a happy bunny now that we got the misunderstanding about using Han Gyul's bass as the backing cleared up. I was devastated for Chan Young when I originally thought they used it bc they still wanted Han Gyul as part of their band. It makes sense that they would try to protect him as much as they could.
I'm also glad that there was an apology from Shi Hyun to Chan Young even though it was so late. I think he really needed to hear it to finally believe that he was truly valued as much as Han Gyul. That little smile that he gave, bless him.

I have all the feels for Crude Play. Won't everything turn out all right? I like to hope so and I trust the writers but it's still really emotional to see them go through this. All the feels, all the feels! Ah, also I wish we explored the Crude Play members more. The little tidbits here and there are so tantalizing.
The spillover to So-rim and Mush & Co. is brutal. Their chances of survival as a newly debuted group are even smaller now. It breaks my heart when I think about how earnest they were at the beginning. Oh writers, I hope you can figure something out.
I love how we've essentially established that So-rim and Han-gyul are solid. It was bumpy in the beginning but now, it's like yes, there is no doubt that they are there for each other and are working to get through this together, as they both drew their lines again in front of Chan-young and Yoo-na respectively. So much love. And So-rim singing It's Okay to Han-gyul! ♥♥♥
Like father, like son, In-woo and Han-gyul initially hiding their true nature from So-rim, haha.
Chan-young's car is so flashy... how do people not see it and connect it to So-rim when it's parked at her place? It's a constant thought whenever it's parked right there. Otherwise, oh my heart, Chan-young. Go and find yourself again.
My thoughts of Jin-hyuk are coloured by how he's managed Crude Play. Like, when he was eavesdropping, I couldn't help but wonder if he would try to spin something to the media as a last minute attempt. The likelihood is low, but still, it was something I could see him doing in the past. Looking forward to his turnaround, as in, stand up to CEO Yoo in some way!

Yeah, the spillover to Mush & Co. really scares me because this just feels like the kind of scandal that I've never seen overcome in the Korean entertainment industry, especially by a group so young. So-rim (and, by association, her group) has pretty much been made out to be the Yoko in all this.
What I find so riveting about this drama is that there are so many conflicts that we can't even begin to scratch the surface for some characters. This is why I don't even consider this drama a fluffy romance any more, because the show isn't even half as gratuitous with its couple scenes as pretty much every other rom-com out there. There are too many fleshed-out characters with their own important place in the story.
And this actually becomes the greatest strength to the romance of our leads, because we get to see them grow stronger individually and together as they navigate the cut-throat nature of this industry. Even though this is a youth show, the conflicts have more meat than the ones in more 'flashy/grand' dramas like DotS. That's why the wide-spread criticism of this show will forever make me shake my head.
I really loved her singing It's Okay to Han-gyul again too, especially during this tough time. It brought me back to the dreamy day when she sang to him in the phone booth. So sweet, these two, no matter how rough things get.

We might not get many couple scenes, but each of them leaves an emotional impact. And like you said, we see them grow individually as well. They have their own problems to deal with, independent of the romance and they deal with it maturely. - sorry i dont know how to quote a comment huhu. Anyway in relation to what you said, the way the characters and situations were written can leave an audience to be playful with their imagination and bring out their analytical side. Honestly, the theme of this show is cliché; what makes it interesting is because it is so much relatable to us and the situations are very attuned to reality. The way the characters are responding to a certain situation makes it even more engaging, as with our love-hate relationship with CY... or is it just me lol. Ahhhh, I don't have much time to write now, but I have to share how this drama has gone completely above and beyond my expectations for it with this episode (and the next!). I got so many things I wanted-- Chan-young and the boys finally hashing out their issues, So-rim continuing to handle her relationships with refreshing sensibility, and, most of all, pretty much every character getting focus on their own personal struggle. Really, every story thread in this show is superbly well-balanced, allowing each character to have such a strong impact at any given moment. Hats-off to the writers, once again.
As hard as it is watching our Crude Play boys deal with their greatest nightmare, I know that this is the breaking point necessary for them to take the initiative to free themselves from this world of deception. I've always had a hard time with the ruthlessness of netizens, but it's even more horrifying to me when characters I care about so much are the subject of their wrath. What's even sadder though? It's that you can't even blame their fans for feeling betrayed. Even though we have first-hand knowledge of how they were pushed into this life when they were young and naïve, they are still going to be seen as cheats who took advantage of their fan's trust. And that just breaks my heart.
I wrote last time how I needed a little bit more from our other Crude Play members, so I ended up being impressed with what became clear this episode-- the drama has been putting them, especially In-ho, in the background on purpose. And, I found, this was actually a really effective way of making me feel as though his needs within the group have been neglected all this time. His behavior was so off towards the end and I was surprised by how quickly it became clear to me that he was about to doing something reckless and dangerous, whether intentional or not. I hadn't given much thought to In-ho's actor, but he really made me feel the strain beneath his carefree façade at the end.
I've actually ended up identifying with him a lot, as I tend to be the 'stable', 'dependable' one that keeps whatever struggles I go through to myself, for fear of bringing others further down. So, surprisingly, he really is the most like me of the Crude Play boys.
Thanks for the recap!

The Crude Play showdown was so much more mature than I expected. I didn't expect CY to say that he knows nobody thinks of him as a fill-in anymore (so it's more of a problem within himself and his self-image?), or that he would have quit if they weren't good people, but that he got greedy because they were. It so explains his jealousy with HG, his constant competitiveness with HG. Because he saw HG was the real genuine thing he wanted to be.
And yes, I'm more of an Inho too. The nice kid who never complains, it doesn't mean I don't have my own struggles and insecurities though.

Maybe it's because I'm stupid, but the dialogue in this drama keeps surprising me. Like when Chanyoung said it would have been all the same anyway, had they met as a producer-bassist. Cuz they would have both coveted Sorim and her voice. I don't know why, I expected him to answer, at least a "Maybe, it would have been different." Lol.

Ok. I need to calm myself down first before I have a heart attack. As everything with Chan-young began to settle down, all of a sudden, In-Ho has a car accident. This show has been relentless in dealing pain to each character, but there are also those small moments that just make us so darn happy. This episode, thus far, has been quite surprising. Specifically, with the cliffhanger. Han-Gyul and Chan-Young has there character change and time to accept things, so who is going to be next?

Why Chan-young, why? I was trying so hard to heal from my second lead syndrome, but you just go and rip out my heart and run it over with a truck??? Why me?????
But in all seriousness, Chan-young's character really impressed me this episode. Respecting So-rim's feelings, always looking to make Crude Play the best they can be and making decisions that benefit them....uugh my heart. I liked him from the beginning, but I always viewed him as a bit selfish. However, he completely proved me wrong this episode. Hands down my favorite scene was when he held back from telling So-rim his feelings, because it goes to show how he truly supports So-rim and wants the best for her, both career-wise and emotionally.
Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to my corner to cry over this show. Second lead syndrome is ever so painful.

Man, why are the characters in this drama so deep? My heart can't take it. CY admitting that he was afraid his greed was harming the others and their music. That was so deep. I didn't give him enough credit, which I should have. Because every character in this drama have so much self-awareness. I should have known CY was no different.

I loved that one-one-one conversation between Jin-hyuk and Chan-young. It came way too late, but at least Jin-hyuk explained to Chan-young the reason he changed the song was cause CEO Yoo wanted to steal Mush & CO away. And I loved Chan-young's response to that. That before, Chan-young agreed with the issue of Crude Play rushing because he loved Han-kyul's music the same way Jin-hyuk did. But that it seems like music is no longer the motivator with Jin-hyuk for Mush & Co. I hope that can make Jin-hyuk reflect on himself.

Also when Jinhyuk overheard Yoona's talk with the boys. When she said not to look down on her, and that she also cares about music, not attention or popularity. Perhaps that'll make him see that everyone around him cares about the music more. And that way, he can compare himself with them and see how much he has changed... didn't he used to be from a music college or something?

Nice one. I didn't get why JH listening in on the exchange between SH and YN was relevant. Now, I do. JH is gonna be very heart-broken when he comes to realise how his misplaced priorities are his own fault. How for a musician, their major concern is music. Not how much money they made or fame they garnered. Think JH think and reflect please.

No, I don't want JH to be a musician, but I want him to be able to understand musicians. JH and CEO Yoo both expect the muscians to become businessmen, that is wherein the conflict arises. The muscians should be given a free hand to perform their art, with JH managing them behind the scenes. He should be able to suport them and encourage them strenly and lovingly. But he fails to do this. He keeps emphasising the fact that CP, HG, YN(when he asked her to pretend to get back with HG) is their money making machine. How can art be born with such thoughts. He needs to know that music is the primary concern of these young souls, and money and fame is just a biproduct to it.

@DramaNinja excellently put. There are musicians who are as much about business as they are about music, but a pure soul can create the kind of music that touches people's heart, and Jinhyuk ought to know that more than anyone else, having recruited talents like HG and SR.

So far this drama has suprised me the most....kuddos to the amazing writer and the director.
While starting this drama I never expected it to have such a clear plot with no unnessary twists which usually all rom com dramas have.
1. No usual love triangle which creates a rift in the plot.
2. Both heros respect each other and did not create choas which affects everyones life.
3. No evil ex girlfriend (thank god!!!!)
4. Amazing ost
If the japanes version is similar to this plot I going to watch that too...

The manga focuses a lot more on the hero. Overall, all three adaptations have their own distinct charm.

Ahhh... I cried again reading the recap about how Chanyoung misunderstood Crude Play's intention of not playing his bass on their videos. Dude! How can you do this to my heart? It was all a misunderstanding and they love you so much, okay? Eeeeeee. Please just be together!!
It's crazy how people can just straight up hate someone because of one thing and then ACT ON IT. How can you wish someone death? For being in a rumor with your oppa? Seriously? I wish this only happens in drama but we all know how much worse it is in real life.
I love how this drama shows us a peek into the industry and somehow they all make sense. I'm all for Crude Play but I understand Jinhyuk's view and even CEO Yoo. They all have a point. Thinking about it, I realized that I actually like CEO Yoo because she does her job really well (although she doesn't really care for her artists' emotions). There's really no one right answer. I guess let's all just get along, shall we?
Anyway, I love that sassy Shihyun part. Tell her that she's overreacting! Way to go, Shihyun! But Inho-yah! Please be safe! Thanks for the recapsss

Absolutely loved this episode! Soo much character development! Chan young i am so happy that he decided not to ruin his friendship with soo rim with an awkward confession. I loved how smartly she prevented such a thing most heroines woul fumble around awkwardly in such scenarios. I also adore how soo rim and han gyul have come to depend on each other. Hang yul in my eyes has changed so much! he has made himself vulnerable in front of soo rim through which i think he will become much stronger. I also just love the emphasis on friendship in this episode even though han gyul was concerned about soo rim and chan young being alone initially at the end of the day he left soo rims place early so he could take care of chan young, i think crude play is gonna become stronger and much better after getting past this struggle.

I believe Chan Young already gave up on asking So Rim out as soon as Han Gyul walked into the house. That's why Chan Young immediately tried to leave once he saw Han Gyul. "Now that he's here..." I found that part really cute, like So Rim saying, "That's my seat." In my opinion, it has nothing to do with So Rim. Chan Young was removing himself (his doll) from Crude Play (the three dolls on So Rim's windowsill). Because the very next scene was Chan Young telling his members that he wanted to take a break from Crude Play.
Your meanings made me smile.
- "for it/him to rest": Aww, he's been so wound up lately, he certainly needs the rest.
- "a sign that he was there and left a trace in Sorim's life": That's deep. ?

When CY was getting ready to take a break from CY, I read all of his actions as someone who was ready to say like a very last goodbye (like, I really thought CY was going to hurt himself). I don't know why I jumped to the deepest darkest conclusion when I saw that. So when I saw him put the doll on his bed- I thought it was his way of saying goodbye forever. But now we know this is not true. I really like @panshel interpretation, and it resonates with me. It also could be that because he was aware of what Sorim was doing- not letting him tell her how he feels- maybe putting the doll there was his small way of trying to get his message across without being too aggressive.

I'm late to the party..oh well. I had this typed up, so might as well share it:
What a thoughtful episode. Chan young continues to surprise me. First I liked him...then I was annoyed with him...then I couldn't stand him...now I couldn't love him more! His actions from the start of the episode was sincere and also painful to watch. For the first time I could actually see that he liked So rim...he didn't convince me before. But he did in this episode. He was so mature and what's the word...understanding? Like he could finally see that So rim likes Han gyul, and that he doesn't have a chance.
My favourite scene was when the Crude Play boys were gathered together and Chan young just put his thoughts out there. He was so open and honest and it brought tears to my eyes. This is the Chan young I've been waiting to see since forever!
My favourite quote?
Chan young- "This time, I'm not sure what you're doing this for. At least, it doesn't seem like it's because of the music."
Jin Hyuk- *dumbfounded*
Well done, Chan young, well done???????
I've just completely given up on Jin Hyuk, to be honest. He's one of those characters who could've been...but I guess we have 3 more episodes for any sort of redemption to occur.
And we finally get fo hear an apology from Shi Hyun to Chan young. I was so greatful for this scene because I remember many Beanies discussing this exact point. I'm glad Shi Hyun came out now and told him sincerely that he was sorry. Because even though "he had always felt bad", there's nothing better than to let that out because otherwise the other person might never know. And now I'm thinking, if Shi Hyun had apologized earlier, would Chan young still have felt insecure about his place in the band?
