Welcome to the new Dramabeans!

You may notice that things look a little different around here. We’ve been working really hard to bring you a cleaner, more responsive, more interactive experience, and are very excited to welcome you to the new Dramabeans!

Don’t worry—it’s still really the old Dramabeans, and all of our content is still here… somewhere… maybe in a new corner of the site. We know that we’ve gone into your living room and rearranged all of your furniture while you were out, so we’re here to guide you and tell you where we put all your stuff. We even got your some spiffy new stuff to go with it!

User accounts. You are now able to claim your usernames for good by registering with the site. If you are a longtime user, sign up with the email associated with your comments; we’re doing our best to link your old history to your new account. With your account, you can now create a profile and post things on your fan wall, and also track all the comments you’ve made. (You can still comment without creating a user account, although you won’t get to use any of the account features below.)

Upvoting/Downvoting. The thumbs are back! Comments can now be given thumbs-ups and thumbs-downs, but only to registered users. Thumbs are super fun, so you should totally register.

Featured Beanies. The “Beanies” tab in the header will take you to a page that highlights you guys and your comments. Be an active Beanie and be featured here!

Following. Users can follow each other, reply on each other’s fan walls, and get notifications when your friends post content. You can also follow shows by going to a recap and clicking the “Favorite” button.

Beanie Levels. Every comment upvote you’re given, every user you follow (or are followed by), and every fan wall post you make accumulates points for your account! What is this good for? Not anything useful, but we have implemented point levels, which will change your Beanie status as you accumulate more points. In your profile page, you’ll see that your Beanie level starts off as “Candy” (because everybody starts out as a Candy in dramaland!). We plan to also display the point totals so you can actually see how many you have (this feature is coming soon!), as you work your way up to water maid, noble idiot, and contract girlfriend, among many others. We also plan to add comment counts to the point totals.

Notifications. Your account will notify you when someone follows you, when someone comments on your posts (on your fan wall), when someone likes your post, and when a show you’re following adds a new post (say, posts a new recap). We’re adding email notification capability very soon!

Recaps, News, and Extras. We’ve grouped everything into three overarching categories, as you can see from the front page. “Recaps” includes not only drama recaps but also drama reviews (say, year end reviews), What We’re Watching posts, Spill the Beans, and movie reviews. “News” encompasses all news (drama, movie, variety, celebrity). And “Extras” is where you’ll find Podcasts, Open Threads, Beans of Wisdom, Announcement and meta posts, and anything that’s not a recap, review, or news post.

Blog View. If you don’t like this division of categories and yearn for the olden days when everything was in nice reverse chronological order, don’t worry, we’ve taken care of you. The “Switch to Blog View” button in the header will take you to a simple page that displays all posts.

Glitches. We’ve tested the site extensively and prepared as best we could, but we know there will inevitably be some glitches as we all settle into the new site. If you encounter any, shoot us an email at [email protected]. Screenshots are super helpful, as well as information about what device/platform you are using.

Thanks for all your patience and understanding—we’re beyond excited to present our new site to you, and hope you like it! We promise to work out the remaining kinks as quickly as we’re able. In the meantime, go forth and explore, Beanies!

I just managed to register and wow, this comment seems to be mine 600th one! Can't believe I wrote so many as I consider myself a silent reader :--) Cool feature this, btw, so... I'm reading my own comments now :--)))) and walking my DB memory lane...(only... "Read more" doesn't seem to work :-(( )

Congrats on the new DB look, you must have been working a lot on it!!! I will definitely need some time to find my way with all those changes and new features, but it is all very exciting :--)

So weird, I see your username as an activated account, but can´t see your profile page (to follow you. yes. I promise, I am not a stalker. I don´t even have stalks *ka-ching* !)

Yeah. I can't get to my profile either. I figured I'd work on it when I get home.

Probably just glitches. Javabeans had to help me get in lol

I went thru this.... pre-registration at the party lets you put caps & spaces in your user name, but they are illegal otherwise, and the profile is inaccessible after the original setup. I ended up having late-night "tech support" (JB & GF) nuke my account so I could set up a legal one.

Hmm. So maybe I shouldn't be having as much fun favoriting shows and whatnot if this account isn't going to stay.

Glad to see you, Lord C!

@pakalanapikake: glad to see you too. I'd "follow" you except I'm having trouble getting that to work.

I think from this maybe a suggestion of improvement for future could be the addition of a follow button next to usernames on comments. This way we won't have to jump onto the profile page and then add users. However it's so good to see you both here! Great to see some familiar faces.

This is a great site revamp and it looks like you transitioned remarkably smoothly! The ads on the old site were getting so annoying on my iPad that I was thinking of trying to stay away for a while, so this was good timing. One minor inconvenience in the new site: I'd like to be able to see more of the Master Recap and Ratings lists at one time instead of having to page through a lot of short chunks.

I've been finding comments from beanies I want to follow in the posts, if you click on their name it takes you to their page, and you can follow from there. There might be a more direct way (searing their name?) but that's what's worked for me. ^^

Nope, nothing there. I've tried several people's profiles. But I did find another way -- someone followed me and the notification in my profile had a "follow" button. Fortunately she is one of the people I wanted to follow. So if everybody else follows me I can follow them too :)

Still getting my sea legs on the new and improved DB. ;-) -- Still live-watching REBEL and SAIMDANG. (Had been watching VOICE and TOMORROW WITH YOU.) Am closing in on the end of PINOCCHIO, which has been quite addictive. -- Glad to see you made it over. What are you watching now? ;-)

1

re: sea legs. I know, it's bit disconcerting. It feels like the same DB and totally different at the same time. I know I love it, but at times my sentimental heart misses the old site.

I'm watching TUNNEL and SWDBS, and maybe MYSTERY QUEEN. I also ventured into the world of recaps and started recapping LIAR AND HIS LOVER on my blog. I panic wondering how to fit it in every mon-tues (Wed to finish), but I think it's worth it. I love writing down exactly what I think of every moment of the show, and taking screencaps and just basically feeling boss for putting so much effort into my passion for Kdramas. ^^ I'm glad you're watching Pinocchio! I love that show!

Wow, this is a huge makeover! It's like an HGTV-level house reno makeover. Congrats on getting through it! And it looks great!

I do have a question about display names vs usernames. I've been going by a different name (ar) this year, but it has too few characters to use for a username, so I've registered under my older name. I've set "ar" as my display name though, but the username, asianromance, is still showing up.

Congratulations on the change, I clicked, like crazy, on everything that could be clicked to make the new mental map of the site, and it's really easy to follow, is simple and functional, you just have to get used to it. And the design, it feels really bright and cool, I really like it. I always appreciate the great work you do with this site, which, for me, is very interesting, fun and entertaining. Keep working hard. Thumbs up.

Great job, dramabeans staff!
I love the minimalist look of the new layout. And so far, no ads! I was hesitant with the first makeover from years ago and a lot less so with this one. I know it’s just a matter of familiarizing myself with the new layout. The content and the community have always been awesome and why I’ve been loyal follower. Also, I appreciate the option for switching to blogview.
Question: Did you get rid of the links (Ask a Korean, The Talking Cupboard, etc…) altogether? I’ve lately been following some of those links and I haven’t found them anywhere in the new layout. I know, they’ve been around FOR YEARS and I’m just now discovering them?? I wanted to bookmark them now but I could only think of the two mentioned above. Any chance they’re still somewhere on this site or anyone tell me the other sites?

I admit that I like some change, but not all change. This is just in general so it is a me thing not a you thing. I am not used to so much white space, but I'll catch on. Prior framing made things seem more visually organized to me and I liked that there was bulleted info on the home page (post titles, programming by day, etc.). I'll need to click for them. I've also noted that the site seems more sluggish. I'm just sharing this for feedback sake.

That said, there are many positives that I will undoubtedly uncover like the thumbs! Thanks for your hard work. :)

Being a Candy in dramabeans is nostalgic... I used to be a candy in real life back when I was in the States having two partime jobs and a per-diem job and also College and then I moved to Mexico for medschool, since then I'm just a starving student who is about half a year away from a general practice medical license in Mexico and the beginning of the conquering the usmle exams!

I wake up at 6, work from 7-9, volunteer until 2, work from 3-7 and then crash when I get home.

All without a car. I don't know how Candy(s) in kdrama do it.

Props to you though!

Wow. you are really busy!! Right now I'm in my social service year of medicine and it's crazy busy ( I live at the clinic five days of the week which means I am on call 24hrs of those five days) and I am working on my thesis, so I really only have time for the one thing and it's really draining... but I always take time to read dramabeans, even if I can't watch all the dramas that are recapped.

Can I ask what happens when we follow people? (or get followed?) do we get notifications when they post things on their fan wall? Because I have been following lots of people who do post things but I haven't been notified. So wondering what is the function of the "follow" button.
Thanks! :)

Hi, James! It looks as if you are one of the DB IT Elves. ;-) First, I'd like to thank everyone at the DB Mothership for their hard work in redesigning the site and implementing the cutover. The fact that we can claim our comments is truly stupendous! Thank you!! I was shocked to see how many comments I've posted since about January 2016. Egads! -- My comments below are offered strictly as feedback and observations on functionality, as well as my own preferences. I do not intend them as criticism, but as sincere user feedback to help make DramaBeans even better. I know that Rome wasn't built in a day, and that it may take a while to fine-tune the new functionality to implement some of the very useful features that made the DB of yore such a great gathering place at which to yak. -- (1) How will notifications work? I don't want to get a bunch of emails at the address that I've used for my login. I'm on DB practically every day. (But I can understand how someone else might want to be notified about new recaps, postings of Open Thread, etc.) I would love it to bits if notifications were totally optional, and something that registered users could opt-in for, instead of having to opt-out of. -- (2) I'm concerned that if I "favorite" a show or follow a Beanie, I will be notified every time the item in question is mentioned or posts. It will get very old very fast if that includes every single solitary "LOL!"... Conversely, anyone who chooses to follow me risks being inflicted with my verbose metaphysical blathering. (You've been warned! Run for your lives!) -- (3) Other concerns have to do with commenting, specifically the loss of line breaks and paragraph breaks, and the apparent 5-line limit of the input form, which also becomes narrower with every reply in the thread. This might work well for those who never write more than 140 characters, but it's torture for those of us who engage in detailed and lengthy analysis of drama points. It makes proofreading before posting a real pain, too. Please find a way to give us back the larger input screen. -- (4) Please include the page links at the top of each comment section as well as at the bottom. It would be cool if there were a way to have "floating" page links on very long comment pages such as Open Thread so users don't have to scroll all the way to the top or bottom to navigate between pages. -- (5) Are comments still limited to 3,000 characters? If so, will the character counter for the input screen return? -- (6) One thing I miss greatly in the comments is the numbering of comments within threads. In addition to the text having been concatenated into difficult-to-parse solid blocks of verbiage (all my beautiful formatting seems to have gone "poof!"), the context that existed between the replies has disappeared. For me, a message number such as "400.1.2.1.3" functioned as a handy audit trail and enabled me to specify exactly which message I was referencing when the Reply Button...

For me, a message number such as "400.1.2.1.3" functioned as a handy audit trail and enabled me to specify exactly which message I was referencing when the Reply Button was no longer available. It served a very useful purpose for me, and I am dismayed by its absence. (I worked as a technical writer in a past life.) -- (7) I have issues with the glare of the white background. A warm, light yellow gives me good contrast without the eye strain. -- Those are the main observations that have been bugging me at this time. I just wanted to report them to a Suggestion Box, and didn't know where else to do it. Tag, you're it! ;-) -- Many thanks! Hwaiting! -- PakalanaPikake
