The Liar and His Lover: Episode 5

Actions may speak louder than words – and Han-gyul may perform those actions with gusto – but at the end of the day, it’s the words we share that maintain a healthy relationship. Without even realizing it, Han-gyul has found himself in a new friendship that he wants to maintain. But the more he comes to cherish this friendship, the more he wants to keep certain words to himself. And with each passing day, his secret only deepens the threat of pushing his beloved singer away.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

Chan-young promises to dedicate the next three years to So-rim and her band, and he urges her to promise the same as he holds out his hand. So-rim hesitates at his intense eagerness, but takes his hand in the end.

And at that very moment, Han-gyul bursts out onto the roof, searching for So-rim. He finally spots her up on the main roof, grasping Chan-young’s hand and smiling. Han-gyul can only stand there and watch, the disappointment hitting him as he realizes that he’s too late.

In the studio, Jin-woo and Gyu-sun are still in awe at the fact that Han-gyul is the one and only K. To Jin-woo’s surprise, Gyu-sun isn’t at all upset like he is – in fact, Gyu-sun finds it amazing that So-rim’s crush just so happens to be the producer of her favorite band: “It’s just like a movie!” Haha.

Jin-woo persists in saying that Han-gyul deceived them all, but Gyu-sun figures it’s not that much of a big deal. So when So-rim returns, Gyu-sun immediately tells her he has news about Han-gyul… but realizing this could make her like Han-gyul even more, Jin-woo jumps Gyu-sun and covers his mouth. So-rim pays them no attention, but hearing Han-gyul’s name makes her remember something, and she’s out the door again.

She calls Han-gyul and asks if they can meet. Once they’re settled in a coffee shop, she cautiously reveals that she’s been signed to Sole Music. She apologizes for just telling him now, but she couldn’t find the right opportunity before. Han-gyul feigns surprise and congratulates her, saying there’s no need for her to feel sorry.

Han-gyul’s the one who feels sorry for asking her to sing his song when he didn’t know about her being scouted. However, that’s not why she turned down his song, So-rim says. She explains that it was because he’d mentioned hating girls who sing.

Han-gyul blinks in surprise and asks how she could refuse music over something he said. “If there’s a good song or a good opportunity right in front of you, you shouldn’t let someone like me get in your way.” So-rim interrupts him, asking, “Why do I have to choose one? Why do I have to choose between music and you?” She’d rather work hard at both then sacrifice one without trying.

Oh, ouch. She doesn’t realize it, but that seems to hit a nerve in Han-gyul. He shakes his head, saying she can’t handle being a real singer with that attitude. According to him, it’s a tough job, even if you are willing to sacrifice everything.

He grows more agitated and yells that if only she’d told her about being casted sooner, he could’ve—… He suddenly gets choked up and makes a quick exit, leaving So-rim completely stunned.

As Yoo-na is being driven home, she notices Han-gyul standing under a bus stop as it rains. She tells her chauffeur to stop the car and steps out to approach Han-gyul. She asks if he’s standing there because of the rain and offers to drive him to the subway. Though he resists at first, she eventually convinces him to accept.

So-rim is on her way home too, stuck in a daze, when she suddenly runs into Jin-woo. He came to ask why she ran out earlier and assumes it was because of Han-gyul. Instead of answering, So-rim wonders how he’d feel if someone told him something important a little too late. Jin-woo immediately thinks she’s talking about Han-gyul’s secret identity and says that that would be the worst.

Jin-woo stops when he sees that So-rim is tearing up and asks her what’s wrong. She cries that Han-gyul must be angry with her for keeping her casting a secret, and then she breaks down into full-on sobs at the thought of never seeing him again. Jin-woo helplessly watches her cry, furious determination setting in his eyes.

In Yoo-na’s car, Han-gyul contemplates deleting the new song he’d written for So-rim from his phone. Yoo-na sees this and asks about it, though he just says it’s something he’d consider giving to someone with a good voice. This makes Yoo-na pause, and then she tells her chauffeur to take Han-gyul all the way home.

Jin-woo reaches Han-gyul’s place at the same time that Yoo-na’s car does, and he fumes to see Han-gyul with another woman. As soon as Han-gyul exits the car and heads for his door, Jin-woo comes barreling toward him and shoves him against the wall. However, Han-gyul gets the upper hand and kicks Jin-woo to the ground. In the midst of all the struggle, Jin-woo curses Han-gyul for making So-rim cry, making him freeze.

The Crude Play boys pull up and immediately come to Han-gyul’s aid, separating him from Jin-woo. The sight of the boys throws Jin-woo off: “I guess you really are K.” The boys try to figure out what Jin-woo’s deal is, but all Han-gyul can think about is what Jin-woo said about So-rim. He slowly walks away from everyone before breaking into a run.

He runs all the way to So-rim’s house, just in time to catch her closing the shop. He’s relieved to see her, though once they venture out to talk, the air is awkward between them. Han-gyul finally stands to speak, but So-rim beats him to it: “I like you.” She says that even if he never wants to see her again, she can’t give him up.

Han-gyul glances down guiltily. “I came to tell you that I’ll wait,” he says. He’ll wait until she debuts and becomes a singer, until she can sing his song.

Han-gyul continues that she was right – that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice one thing in favor for another. But he’d blown up earlier because he knows that that’s his problem. He failed at balancing both things, and as a result, he ended up hurting others because of his music.

He gives So-rim a small smile and sighs, glad to have gotten all of that off his chest. Now that he’s done, he tells her that he’ll do whatever she asks to make it up to her. When she looks at him in confusion, he explains, “I heard you cried because of me.” D’aww, you’re killing me here.

So-rim’s back to her old smiley self as she requests to hear him sing his song “I’m Okay” again.

Han-gyul takes her to the boys’ now empty bar hangout and sits her down for her own private concert. He settles behind the keyboard on stage and firmly states that he’s only doing this once. So-rim nods, clapping her hands with delight.

He smiles and begins playing the song, the rendition soft and sweet. And as he sings, he gazes at her with these eyes that kill me all over again. So-rim happily sways to the music and mouths the words, only to stop when he goes into the next verse – he’s singing the lyrics she’d written for him.

So-rim is moved to tears, looking as if she’s falling for Han-gyul a second time. The two watch each other with smiles throughout the rest of the song.

The next day, So-rim stops by the teacher’s office to greet Teacher Bong before heading to Sole Music. Se-jung, the classmate who secretly likes Crude Play, is just leaving the office, though when she overhears So-rim talking about the company, she pretends to drop something to listen further.

So-rim is practically glowing as she tells Teacher Bong how happy she is, and he flatly replies that that’s great. Then when she starts to turn away, he calls her back and gives her a quiet but enthusiastic “Fighting!” like the awesome guy he is.

Just outside of Sole Music, So-rim stops by a street vendor to admire some phone cases. Han-gyul is heading into work himself when he notices So-rim and freaks out, immediately taking cover before she sees him.

Inside, Chan-young eagerly asks Jin-hyuk if he’s listened to the song he sent him. Jin-hyuk says that while a newbie’s title track is important for their debut, he wants to discuss all of that once Chan-young is done with his commitments to Crude Play. Chan-young starts to protest when So-rim pops in, ready for practice.

She asks if she’ll be recording Chan-young’s song today, but he’s quick to respond that it’s not ready yet. Jin-hyuk gives him a stern look before leaving them alone. So-rim turns to Chan-young and tells him how excited she is for his song, which relieves him from some of his uneasiness.

Elsewhere, Han-gyul runs into Jin-hyuk and hesitantly asks about the new group. Jin-hyuk tells him that they’ll be sure to debut soon, especially since Chan-young seems so impatient. Then we cut to Chan-young as he watches So-rim practice with what looks like hope all over his face.

So-rim joins Chan-young and Sole Music employee Soo-yeon (the girl who seems to like Shi-hyun) in the back. Soo-yeon notices two phone cases in So-rim’s bag – a matching couple set – and So-rim asks if a guy would like it. Chan-young looks up at that and wonders if she’s talking about the guy she’s crushing on. He gives her a weak smile when she answers yes, though after thinking for a moment, he asks if she wants to grab some food.

As the two head toward the exit, a passing Han-gyul sees them coming his way and makes a run for the stairs. Once he knows he’s out of sight, he watches them leave, noting So-rim’s smiling face. The rest of the Crude Play boys come up the stairs and smack Han-gyul back to his senses. The boys eye him suspiciously and then drag him off for an explanation.

Yoon and In-ho crack up upon learning Han-gyul has been seeing a high school girl, now understanding why he’d left in a hurry the previous night. The boys give him a hard time about it, so Han-gyul insists that it’s not that kind of relationship. But when In-ho and Shi-hyun jokingly ask if they’ve done anything illegal, Han-gyul yells at them to stop and gets up to leave. He turns around with one last thing to say, his tone serious: “She isn’t someone you should be talking about so carelessly!”

Chan-young treats So-rim to a fancy lunch, making sure to reiterate that he wants them to become close. She nods and jumps at the chance to ask about K and what the producer is like. “He’s reeeally,” – So-rim leans in with anticipation – “ugly,” Chan-young finishes. (Pfffft.) So-rim deflates as he continues that K is totally fat, and on top of that, an annoying jerk.

So-rim covers her ears and says that she doesn’t want to hear things like that. Chan-young asks if she’s worried that her fantasy of K will shatter, but she clarifies that she wanted to hear about the person behind the great songwriting. Chan-young coolly tells her that there’s no need getting to know K: “When there’s a songwriter like him by your side, you only feel inferior.”

Back at Sole Music, Yoon and In-ho show Shi-hyun the negative comments that have been crowding up their anonymous videos and suggest they quit uploading before they attract any attention. Shi-hyun sighs in agreement, disheartened, when he notices Soo-yeon peeking by the door. She hurries off before he can react.

After admiring her cute couple phone cases, So-rim sends Han-gyul multiple texts, asking to meet and promising a special gift. Han-gyul sends back a simple “Okay,” and then adds a smiley face for good measure.

Han-gyul’s eyes fall on the download Jin-hyuk sent him: Chan-young’s unfinished song. He frowns as he thinks back to earlier, and we see that Jin-hyuk had asked Han-gyul to give it a listen. Han-gyul had refused, saying it’d be wrong since it wasn’t Chan-young who sent it.

The next day, CEO Yoo, Jin-hyuk, and Yoo-na finish up an interview with a reporter. When the reporter asks if Yoo-na is dating anyone, even bringing up Jin-hyuk’s name, the air is thick with tension. Jin-hyuk promptly changes the subject and offers a tour of the company.

Meanwhile, Chan-young is giving a tour of his own, showing So-rim and her friends where Crude Play will hold their comeback showcase. Someone calls out, “Seo Chan-young!” from the back, and So-rim gasps to find herself face to face with the other Crude Play members.

The boys flock over to So-rim, who can barely hold in her fangirling as they greet her by name. Annoyed, Chan-young shoos the boys away, so they head back up to where Jin-woo and Gyu-sun are. Shi-hyun throws an arm around Jin-woo and teases him about his fight with Han-gyul. Jin-woo ignores his jokes and pouts that Han-gyul wouldn’t deceive So-rim like this if he knew just how much she liked him.

Chan-young urges So-rim to sing as long as she’s here. She excitedly steps up to the mic when she notices a girl watching from afar. It’s Yoo-na, passing by as she escorts the reporter. So-rim can’t recognize her from where she stands, but when Yoo-na turns to leave, the image of the woman she’d seen the day Han-gyul was upset resurfaces.

The resemblance shakes So-rim so badly that she nearly faints. Chan-young rushes over to make sure she’s okay, but even she doesn’t know why she’s feeling this way. However, she does admit that whenever she’s in an audition-like atmosphere, she’s consumed by fear – a fear that something bad might happen. She feels bad for withholding this information from him, but Chan-young assures her that she probably just needs to get used to it. He also advises her to keep this a secret from Jin-hyuk.

CEO Yoo chats with Jin-hyuk about the new survival show her company, Who Entertainment, plans to create with her trainees. Wanting more experienced contestants, she asks that Jin-hyuk hand over a few of his trainees as well. Without much of a choice, he agrees to have his trainees prepared.

So-rim leaves to meet up with Han-gyul, but when she nears the elevator, she accidentally crashes into none other than Yoo-na. Their collision causes Yoo-na’s coffee to drench So-rim, though So-rim can hardly register Yoo-na’s apologies as she realizes who she’s staring at. She’s still dazed as Yoo-na leads them to a dressing room to give her a change of clothes.

As Han-gyul waits in a coffee shop, he glances toward the entrance, only to make a double take. His eyes widen at the sight of So-rim wearing a short, form-fitting dress, though he quickly recomposes himself as she joins him at the table. He asks what she wanted to give him, so she casually hands over the blue phone case, insisting her only intentions are to protect his phone, lol.

Han-gyul looks at the case and then back at her. “Take out yours,” he orders, his voice dripping with suspicion. So-rim reluctantly shows him the matching case on her phone, making Han-gyul laugh: “What are we, a couple?” So-rim nods enthusiastically. So cute.

He tells her that she’s moving a bit fast to even go so far as to change her style. So-rim glances down at her dress and explains that Yoo-na lent it to her. Figuring the dress doesn’t suit her, she squirms and says that only someone as pretty as Yoo-na can pull it off. Han-gyul tells her not to compare herself to Yoo-na: “Because you’re pretty too.”

Meanwhile, Yoo-na dines with Jin-hyuk and thinks back to So-rim, wondering why she looked so familiar. Jin-hyuk informs her that So-rim is his newest trainee – a trainee that Han-gyul and Chan-young fought over. Yoo-na thinks about this and declares that she wants Han-gyul to work on her next album after all.

As Han-gyul walks So-rim home, she can’t stop blushing over the fact that he called her pretty. Han-gyul notes that she looks out of it and leans in to check her forehead for a fever, but So-rim keeps giggling and flinching away. When he finally gets her to hold still, they hear someone yell, “What do you think you’re doing?!” They turn to see Grandma, who’s glaring right at Han-gyul.

Grandma brings Han-gyul home to hammer him with questions, all of which he answers (almost) truthfully. He tells her that he’s an aspiring musician, so Grandma puts him to the test by making him play the piano. Soon, Grandma is dancing along to the music with So-rim, and she begins to warm up a bit.

Grandma puts Han-gyul to work on dinner too, and she’s impressed with what she sees. Han-gyul smiles and reveals that he was raised by his grandmother and that he’d often cook with her when his parents weren’t around. Grandma sends him away to wash up and then turns to a grinning So-rim, admitting that she picked up quite a skilled and handsome fella.

After dinner, Han-gyul takes a look around So-rim’s bedroom, admiring the pictures of young So-rim. When So-rim joins him, he reminds her to keep the door open so as not to worry Grandma. Having noticed him checking out the family pictures, So-rim reveals that both her mom and dad passed away when she was six years old.

So-rim doesn’t remember them much, but she could never forget her mom’s singing. She recalls the way her mom sang with her whole body and how that image defined So-rim’s love for music. Han-gyul lets this sink in and says that he understands now why he found So-rim’s voice so warm. He gives her a small smile, though it falters when his eyes land on the poster of K behind her.

On the bus ride home, Han-gyul puts his blue phone case aside (he kept it!) and contemplates Chan-young’s song file again. Giving in to the temptation, he presses play.

At the same time, Chan-young and Jin-hyuk are discussing the song at the company. Chan-young demands that Jin-hyuk stop avoiding the subject and just give him an answer. To his surprise, Jin-hyuk tells him it’s a good song. And from the bus, Han-gyul narrates that he thinks it’s a good song too, thinking it’ll emphasize So-rim’s voice nicely. But…

“It’s too plain,” Jin-hyuk states. Chan-young insists that he was simply keeping the public appeal in mind. Besides, he says, all songs start off with similar chords. Jin-hyuk lectures right back that if the chords are similar, it shows the difference between one with talent and one without talent. He says that handing a new group a song with this little individuality and identity will only hurt them in the long run.

Han-gyul’s just finished jotting down some notes for Chan-young’s song when he gets a text from Shi-hyun. He joins the Crude Play boys at their bar, where he’s horrified to learn that they’ve met So-rim. They tell him what Jin-woo said earlier and wonder why he won’t just tell her who he is – Han-gyul will be unmasked for Crude Play’s comeback, so she’ll find out anyway.

The very thought makes Han-gyul grab a beer, and as usual, one sip is all it takes to bring him under. “Who I am isn’t important,” he says. “The problem is that I lied to So-rim. Honestly, I’m scared. I’m scared that if she finds out I lied again, her feelings will get hurt and she won’t want to see me again.” He slurs that even so, he’s definitely going to tell So-rim the truth… and then passes out. But you meant what you said, right? You are going to tell her, right?

Chan-young is brooding in the studio alone, remembering when he’d spoken to Jin-hyuk after being asked to join Crude Play. He’d asked Jin-hyuk why he gave up on Han-gyul, and Jin-hyuk had answered in typical business fashion that he simply encouraged Han-gyul to do what he’s better at. Chan-young falls to the ground in tears as the memory fades, narrating that because he was just a replacement, no one had even asked how he’d felt.

The next day, Chan-young watches So-rim practice from afar. Han-gyul comes around the corner too and starts to open the door, but stops when he sees Chan-young leaving. He looks back to So-rim, conflicted, but decides to follow Chan-young out instead.

When Chan-young sees that Han-gyul has followed him out onto the roof, he immediately tries to leave, but Han-gyul stops him to confess that he listened to his song. Han-gyul offers to help with the arrangement, not realizing he’s only rubbing salt into a wound. Chan-young grows frustrated and asks why Han-gyul is trying to butt into something that’s his.

Han-gyul apologizes, saying Chan-young has the wrong idea. However, Chan-young is tired of his apologies. He firmly states that he’ll never let Han-gyul take this one opportunity away from him. Chan-young reverts back to a forced smile and says he should go – he has to practice with So-rim.

Chan-young finds So-rim downstairs as she’s reaching for her ringing phone, and he tells her to ignore it since she promised to keep music as her top priority.

Sensing something is off, So-rim asks Chan-young what’s wrong. He turns to her, his expression grave, and answers with his own questions: Does she really want to sing his song? What if K were to write her a song? So-rim assures him that she’d still sing his. But he’s still unsatisfied – he asks what she would do if the guy she likes wrote her a song.

So-rim doesn’t know how to answer that, and her hesitation seems to be the final straw for Chan-young. So-rim’s phone rings again, but he still doesn’t let her answer. Instead, he asks, “Want to hear the new single? Crude Play’s title track?” WHAT. Chan-young, don’t you dare!

Ugh, but he does. Back on the roof, Han-gyul realizes what Chan-young meant behind his words and runs back inside to find So-rim. But it’s too late. So-rim jumps at the chance to hear the new song, so Chan-young goes ahead and plays it for her, watching her expectantly.

The beginning of the song is new to her, but the second she hears Shi-hyun’s voice sing those familiar words, she pales. Confused, she asks how this could be their title track when it belongs to Han-gyul.

“The Kang Han-gyul you like,” Chan-young says, “is K of Crude Play.” Unable to process this, So-rim reminds him of how he described K before. He admits that he lied, but he coldly states that his lies couldn’t possibly be as bad as Han-gyul’s. Her voice shaking, So-rim says that Han-gyul probably didn’t mean to deceive her; he probably just couldn’t find the right timing. Right? Overwhelmed, she quickly excuses herself.

Han-gyul is still going crazy trying to reach So-rim. He tries calling again, and this time, she answers. He asks where she is and she numbly responds that she’s right behind him. He whirls around, and the first thing he notices is that she’s been crying. He asks what’s wrong, but she doesn’t need to answer. The giant screen behind them answers for him as it starts blaring Han-gyul’s song. With a wounded look, So-rim asks, “Why did you lie?”

COMMENTS

I must say that The Liar and His Lover continues to surprise me with how fast it’s moving in plot – I was fully expecting Han-gyul’s secret identity antics to stretch out far longer than necessary. And while I did enjoy his constant flailing in this episode, I’m pleased to have the Big Secret out in the open now rather than later. After spending all this time warming up to our characters and understanding their inner turmoil, I find the arrival of this conflict to be near-perfect timing. At this point, we’ve developed a strong attachment for just about everyone – all the way from Han-gyul and So-rim to Shi-hyun and Jin-woo – so it feels right to dive into the angst now.

But, urgh, why did Chan-young have to be the one to reveal the secret? Why, Chan-young? Han-gyul was this close to doing it! I am so incredibly mad at Chan-young for stealing Han-gyul’s chance of telling So-rim the truth himself, but I can’t exactly hate him for it. To me, it didn’t seem like some petty second-lead move in order to win the girl; it seemed like a desperate act made in order to keep his hope alive. He wants to separate himself from Crude Play and pursue his own goals so badly that, unfortunately, he’s willing to hurt Han-gyul for it. What he didn’t foresee, however, was how his attempts would hurt So-rim just the same. He seemed genuinely shocked to see how shaken she was in that final scene, so I don’t think he’s a bad person in the slightest. If anything, I find him pitiful for being so alone in this industry while having to watch Han-gyul claim all the glory.

But there is an interesting coldness in the way Lee Seo-won portrays this character that suggests his determination to step out from Han-gyul’s shadow is making him oblivious to So-rim’s own pain. I just can’t get over Chan-young’s reaction when So-rim confided in him about her stage fright. I was waiting for some sort of comfort or compassion in his response, but he just said she had to get used to it? Seriously? I was questioning his intentions before, but now I see that Chan-young only views So-rim as his opportunity out of the band. Perhaps that mindset of his will change as time goes on – and I sincerely hope it does – but for now, I am not happy with him.

True, Han-gyul had behaved in a similar fashion by viewing So-rim as a beautiful voice instead of a person, but this episode made it pretty clear that he’s seeing things differently now. First, she was a silly high schooler with crush, then she was a lovable dongsaeng, and now, at long last, she’s just So-rim – a girl he genuinely cares about. My favorite part, by far, was when he’d heard he’d made her cry and instinctively ran all the way to her house to see her. Han-gyul makes so many mistakes, but the second he’s made aware of them, he’ll own up to them, especially when it comes to So-rim.

I’m not sure if he knows it yet, but there’s something about So-rim that gives him the need to immediately set things right, and as a result, to lay his heart out on his sleeve and relay the truth. But at the same time, he’s beginning to care for her so much that it’s only made his guilt for lying about his identity worse. So though his feelings are finally in the right place, he’s probably thinking it’s too late to actually do anything with those feelings.

But now that So-rim knows the truth, he better put away that thinking and do it quick. So-rim has been doing all the work in this relationship and she can’t keep doing that forever. And Han-gyul saw that in her eyes – she’s been able to forgive him and get past all his little white lies, but this is different. He can see that she can’t just smile and move past this one.

After discovering he’d been keeping something this big from her, she’s going to start questioning every single thing he’s ever told her, even the seemingly heartfelt confessions. Han-gyul has been doing a great job of showing he cares for her, but in a situation like this, simply showing her just isn’t going to cut it. He has to take it one step further and tell her loud and clear where he stands if he’s going to prove he wants to be in this relationship just as much as she does. It’ll be tough on him, but after everything So-rim’s been through, I think it’s about time Han-gyul stop running in place and catch up to her.

I’m pretty nervous for what’s to come, so let’s end things on a happy note. I must reiterate how much I love the music and how it’s used within the story to differentiate our characters. For instance, So-rim’s version of “I’m Okay” is upbeat and cheery while Crude Play’s version is slow and wistful. And then Han-gyul’s version in the bar was a totally different feel, like it was its own separate piece. Though the song was originally written with Yoo-na in mind, Han-gyul turned it around and used So-rim’s lyrics to make it specifically for her. And that’s just precious. It’s also a genius tactic on the drama’s part because I haven’t been able to get the damn song out of my head for days. Well played, Show. Well played.

Agreed! Han Gyul is so damn cute! Was the original character like this? I haven't read the Manga or watched the film but from the trailer the character looked quite pissed off...LHW makes him look so innocent and not in control. Yoon na looks so much more mature to be in a relationship with him. So Rim, on the other hand....totally adorbs:P

No the originial character was more volatile, and less "normal."

Unpopular opinion, but I like this better than the movie because of that. We get to understand much more about the characters and how they grow.

I would say more broody and less friendly and approachable was Aki in movie and manga.

I love Sato, I really do, but I also think the drama is doing a better job at presenting the characters. I'm not talking about acting here, just the writing.

I have watched the movie three times now. Aki is a familiar Japanese version of the tsundere character who would rather chop off a finger than talk about feelings with a girl. This kind of character makes the themes of hiding your true self with lies and communicating your feelings through music compelling.
That being said,I am enjoying this drama and its version of "the liar" very much. I am hoping to see more of the journey of characters changing because they met someone they want to connect with.

Aki was very mysterious in that sense, but I like that Hangyul feels more like a beta-hero character. I like that he isn't afraid to apologize when he's wrong, and explains himself. It justifies Sorim's feelings for him more.

1

@Kbas what's even more beautiful, their journey in changing is because of someone they connect with through music. As someone who loves music, I'm a sucker for this, which explains why I'm getting really fond of this drama.

1

True!
Its dark nuance in the original story is what engage me. But this kind of cute version is also compelling. I never knew I would squee so hard everytime han gyul in confusion for what to do. I usually have a hard time watching a drama where the performers have mediocre ability in act. But I don't mind at all this time, which is weird.

I don't really compare this one with the movie, I always tried to separate two pieces as different medium and just enjoy them for what they are separately. But still I can't help to feel happy everytime there is a resemblance between them. The very reason why I scream happily over the dumplings.

@ Lunaticandra

So I'm not alone! I squeal too whenever I see a scene I recognize from the movie or manga. And yes, Hangyul being clueless on how to deal with Sorim makes me love it for some reason.

0

@lunaticandra Yeah, I feel like both the manga and the drama are nuanced in a different way, which took me a bit to get used to, but now I like it.

0

I agree! Him making dumplings was one of my fave scenes in this episode!

0

I also feel like Lee Hyun Woo comes off so sweet, even in this, and has a very youthful baby face. I kind of imagine a younger, grungy Gong Yoo as the manga version.

Aw, I like that he's kinda sweet though, when he's not angry about music, that is.

Aki is more brooding and depressed in the manga. And Shinya is not this hateful, he cares about Mush but butts out of aki's relationship, but he's closer to her family than Aki is. Mari (Yoona) two-timed Aki with Takagi, their boss, that's why he broke up with her and Takagi is married. They mellowed some things in this adaptation to make it more likeable, i guess. But I'm glad they did that since it makes it unpredictable for those who've read the manga and watched the jmovie.

Also, in the manga, Riko talks a lot more with Mari and is frank with her.

Overall, I like the changes, considering that the korean audience would cause an uproar if they kept some more controversial details, this drama being aimed at a young audience and all.

I can imagine SR getting naughty like Bongsoon in her daydreams. But it would be 10 times more hilarious if it was HG getting into daydreams. Not necessarily a naughty one, just a cute or crazy one would do.

0

re Chocopie I first saw Im ye jin in full house, but I remember her most from Boys over flowers. Apparently, the director thought she was too young to play the grandma so he didn't think to cast her, but she asked him for the role so he's not going to refuse Im ye jin if she's the one seeking out a role.

0

I also liked it that the writers put in much effort in the small things, ie HG telling SR not to close the door so her grandma won't worry. These little acts point out to HG being respectful. This and the dumpling scene with grandma make me love him more!

Hangyul really puts a conscious distance between himself and Sorim considering their age. It just that he doesn't realize how much he is important to her, which is why he always ends up hurting her inadvertently, but he is starting to realize how he affects her this week.

@Eassil yeah.. if this is that Ogasawara Aki, he wouldn't think twice and just kiss her since 3 episodes ago...

UGH, I can't stand Chan-young after this episode. Han-gyeol may be the titular liar but CY proves that the truth can be much worse in the hands of selfish people. I lost all sympathy for him when it became clear that he's holding onto So-rim not because of her initial charm but as a way to get a HG. He withheld information from both HG and SR to manipulate them so he can feed his own pride and desires. I find it disgusting how he asks SR to make promises to him while purposely not telling her about HG until he finds the opportunity to rip their relationship apart. I was LIVID and I can't bring myself to like him until he matures and does things on his own merit without hurting others.

I was also angry but I thought it through and I can understand now why it had to be Chan-young. He wants to break free from the cage where he was put (intentionally or not by Han-gyeol) and when he tries to do so he is always brought back in front of the "genius" K (by Jin-hyuk, by Han-gyeol and even by So-rim). To make So-rim listen to that song was like when a injured animal attacks first I think. And I personally like it better that Han-gyeol could not be the one to tell So-rim. Did you see her reaction? She was already giving him excuses, if he was the one to tell her she would have forgive him right away. Han-gyeol needs to be kind of punished, to suffer a little so he doesn't have the upperhand on So-rim all the time. That way only, it is fair.

I agree. As much as I hate it as someone who wants to protect Sorim, as a viewer, I can't deny that it's better narratively for Hangyul to be thrown off like this. He had it too easy thus far. Seeing Sorim suffer because of him is going to wake up him.

I think what made it slightly better for me, was that he openly told Hangyul he wasn't going to let Hangyul hear her voice if he didn't already. Still a douchy move on Sorim's side. I have this impression from Chanyoung's words about how he's laying his life on the line for this, or putting in his everything, that he feels like he's at war. And as you know the saying.... all if fair in love and war. Seems like that's his philosophy right now, but poor Sorim... Little lamb getting dragged into a war because of her pretty voice. If anybody is watching Radiant office, Chanyoung reminds me of Doctor Seo. They're both nice, but with a dark streak that come out when people mess with them. Which would fit narratively with a naive heroine with a different drama, but I want Sorim to be with a nicer-ish guy. (And Jinwoo is a little too immature or he would do well)

0

I don't know how I feel about Chanyoung he feels alone but at the same time he never made an effort with the guys, they don't seem like the type to exclude him. He felt like an outsider in the first place. I also feel like he should be sort of thankful to Hangyul let's be honest he's not overflowing with talent in anything but playing instruments he's not that great at making music he might feel like he's just a replacement but he was better than Hangyul at playing the bass keep in mind they could have found anyone else and Hangyul was better at making music he gets the fame while Hangyul makes the music he wants to make to me that's a solid win win situation but he's resentful of Hangyul like wth

well, I do think playing an instrument counts as talented. It takes a lot of talent, hard work and skills to reach and maintain that.

I agree that it doesn't mean he shouldn't feel grateful, but I can't blame him for being resentful or wanting more. We're all like that. We all want more in life, and when we get stuck with something when we want more, we get resentful, even if our situation is better than millions and millions in the world. I'm talking about school, career, etc. We can get extremely unhappy if we think we'll forever get stuck in a situation that is not ideal or our goal.

It's one thing to want more in life, another to resent the person who gave you a once in a lifetime opportunity and acknowledged your superior talent in something and step on that person in an attempt to get that something "more". CY feeling frustrated is understandable, but his rivalry with HG is kind of childish and unmotivated. Writing could've been done better on that regard.

Imo, the problem is that Chanyoung feels like he's the one who is being stepped over by the giant Hangyul, who doesn't even realize that he's stepping over him, because Chanyoung feels so small. He acts like he's an act trying his best to fight the "giant" K.

1

Required fields are marked *

True. We can't deny that Sole Ent has been catering to "K's" every whim since the beginning, while treating the Crude Play boys like puppets. Chanyoung doesn't have that friendship or history or with Hangyul, or lack of talent, to feel more accepting of that compared to the other boys. After 5 years of being treated like the second-best star, just "instruments" for Hangyul, even thought they're the actual celebrities, must have stung quite a bit.

1

But are you sure that Chan-young wanted to debut? It does not seem like it to me but that was a hell of an opportunity and he would have been crazy to reject it. Still, I think that from the beginning he wanted to be a composer and not an idol so by making him do it Han-gyeol kind of trap him in this role (and Jin-hyuk is obviously trying to keep him in it)

1
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

From what I understood, Chanyoung was a session player because he wanted to debut with a good song he said. Or he used the good song excuse because he didn't want to debut. Either way, he was offered an opportunity too good to turn down, and yet, not good enough, to be what he truly wanted.

Imo, Jinwoo and Gyusun are in the same situation. They're not sure this is what they want to do, but they do it anyway. And like Jinhyuk predicted, that will bring conflict within the group in the future.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

HG didn't make him do anything, he just made a proposition which CY chose to accept. Jin Hyuk (I think it was him at least, can't remember) asked CY something like if that wasn't why he hadn't debuted yet himself - because he didn't just want to play any kind of music, but good music. Or something similar. Anyway, what I gathered from that is that CY was just a high school kid who wanted to play music and accepted the offer because he'd be working with a "genius".

Tbh I feel like Crude Play (all of them) use HG just as much as he uses them, which is why they haven't had a major "break up". He uses them to get his songs out in a way where he has complete control over his music, while they use him to write them hit songs that are probably what made them famous to begin with. Without him they might not ever have become famous, but HG could easily still have a brilliant career (disregarding his issues with dad and copyright etc).

About Jin Hyuk keeping him in a trap: tbh it's just good business. Debuting a group with a bland title song written by a completely inexperienced songwriter would be a selfgoal so to speak. And quite possibly JH and HG would've let CY debut as a songwriter with a b-track on a Crude Play album, which would be the best way to start and not a risk in any way. So why, all of a sudden, after five years, did CY, seemingly out of the blue, decide to debut as a songwriter with a rookie group? Idol songwriters usually start with writing for their own group, anything else would make little sense and CY is honestly being a bit irrational.

1
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I might be writing my own story here, but it seems to me that CY being rejected, or the boys in Crude Play's opinion not mattering has been a routine that's been hard to break off for years.

Hearing SR's voice was CY's catalyst, it was something good enough that gave him the hope and the strength that spurred him on to act, because for once, her voice gives him hope that she will be able to make his songs shine enough he'll break the barriers Crude Play has been putting him in. She's like his muse and his means at the same time.

HG feels the same about SR, she's also his muse, and something he wants to do other than Crude Play for the first time, but unlike CY, he doesn't have as strong a barrier to break. What makes him as passionate about getting her voice, is not the barrier, but his passion for the perfect sound, which will make the difference in the love triangle.

1

To be compared to a genius is quite hard I think. In an album made by Han-gyeol, one track written by another one would have been the odd one. Is it that difficult to see that the guy wants to make his own music and be appreciated for it without being compared to some other guy? It's the reason why, I think, he wants to work with So-rim so badly. Because she has nothing to do with Crude Play and K (well at least that's what he thought) and so he can free himself and do what he wanted to do from the beginning I think. And for Jin-hyuk, well ok business, but I was more talking about one's aspiration and dream. Obviously, Chan-young readily accepted the proposition because it was good business but there is a difference, I think, between a good opportunity and what you actually want. Well, don't get me wrong, I am not saying that Chan-young is flawless, it is quite the contrary... ^^

1

I think more than hard work, CY has this natural flair for music that his band mates cannot reach upto, even after all their practice and zeal.

And I totally agree about wanting more and not being stagnant in your career. I think everyone can relate to that. Also, CY seems to resent the very fact that he was not given an opportunity to be something else, to explore and dream. He seems to have not had a choice when he was offered the spot at Crude Play. His resentment comes from a deep rooted sense of dissatisfaction and desperation from his conjured up choicelessness.

To be realistic, there is always a choice that we make, but many people don't seem to understand that. Yes, we might feel desperate, anxious and even helpless at times. But that is just what we perceive, and these limitations are set upon our own conditionalities. When we reach out and break free from the barriers that we set for ourselves, that is when we can truly shine and reach the standards of our own self-worth.

That being said, I like how CY is trying to reach out for other avenues to fulfill himself, but his motivations seem to be misplaced. Maybe, down the road he will figure out what his heart desires the most. Also, the Crude Play trio seem to be in that very same process, but they are being brave and are willing to bargain their all and just do what their hearts desires, and that is why I wish that they truly succeed and not get lost among the crowd.

That is also why HG's Dad, seems to be a very interesting character, he played his music and is completely unaffected by the deviousness of his peers, he has found that sense of fulfillment just by creating music and not chasing glory. Maybe all of them and us could learn a thing or two from him.

My favorite part:

To be realistic, there is always a choice that we make, but many people don’t seem to understand that. Yes, we might feel desperate, anxious and even helpless at times. But that is just what we perceive, and these limitations are set upon our own conditionalities. When we reach out and break free from the barriers that we set for ourselves, that is when we can truly shine and reach the standards of our own self-worth.

I'm still in the process of doing that, of learning to let go of my ambitions, for the sake of my happiness, but it's not easy. We always want more, more money, more glory, just more. Greed can drive people to achieve greatness, but can also bring great unhappiness.

Chanyoung once told Sorim (I forgot when), that he hates people who just talk about music, but don't do anything about their passion. I feel like he's unhappy because Crude Play is not his real passion, and he's desperately trying to do something about it, albeit in a wrong way.

@Yurinim I've seen it before, a close friend went through a similar experience. She chased after her ambitions, gave it her all, got all the glory but still was always frustrated and unhappy. Now, due to unexpected circumstances she changed her course, let go of the ambitions and put her happiness first. I'm surprised at how much better she feels right now. She is more confident, shining in the new job, always starts and ends her day as a much happier and fulfilled person.
When we choose happiness, I think we don't need to chase glory, it itself catches up with us. Hope you find your happy place soon! ?

1

@dramaninja Thank you for starting this conversation. I went through something similarly. As much as I loved my friends and family, for about 4-5 years, it always felt empty, even with them in my life. I had to have and be the best at everything, and even when I was, it wasn't enough, because there were more steps to climb further up. It was endless. Once I will graduate, I will be Happy. Once I get into the college I want, I will be happy. Once I get the career I want, I will be happy. Once I get the right boyfriend, I would be happy. I kept telling myself that, and it never worked.

1

Watching others like Chan-young be driven by their ambition, even when we see that without it, they can be nice and pleasant people, gives you something to reflect and look back at yourself to see where ambition has led you, whether to happiness or something you really want, or the opposite, when it brought more problems than it's worth. It depends on the degree of ambition definitely.

1

Your comment speaks to me. It's really sad how upset I get when things don't go my way. I envy people like HG's dad. They might not have the bling, but they're happy without it.

I have everything, the grades, the school, in part, enough money, but I always feel like something is lacking or not enough. It's very frustrating. Maybe I'm missing a Sorim in my life, someone to make me feel happy jsut by being with them, because so far, my career path and money and clothes don't seem enough, even though it's what I wanted in the first place.

Sorry I'm venting on here.

Thanks for the recap. I accidentally fell asleep during part of the show, where Chan Young tells So Rim that Han Gyul is K, and a few other things, I had too much to eat for dinner, so I was drowsy.

Anyway, the writing is pretty good, but it sure seems like everyone except for So Rim has some sort of hidden agenda, especially Se Jung, her classmate. I'm not really sure what her angle is. Hopefully these little plot devices won't lead the story into something incredibly bizarre like a giant concert where Han Gyul's father will reveal himself, Jin Hyuk's secret romance with Yoona, and K's identity will be revealed all at the same time, with the President of Who Music stealing So Rim's group at the same time. That would be too chaotic.

So far, so good. They're doing a good job with the balancing of everyone's hidden agenda like you said. I like it more that everyone gets a side story, it makes the story feel more organic. The movie separated Crude Play's story from the main story, I feel like the manga is doing a better job at including all story into the main storyline, or linking them.

I'm so glad you posted this, I've been waiting for recaps for this episode, as I don't have anyone to discuss it with! Where do I start....
Chan-young: so cute, yet so blinded by his own ambitions. He feels wronged and that he doesn't get a chance to be "genius" like han-gyul. I have a love/hate for him. It just seems like he doesn't care who he hurts, and like you said, sees so-rim as his golden ticket to ditch the band he resents. Ugh, he knew she liked him that much and still snitched about HG being K. Her feelings were crushed!! He wanted out(of the band) a long time ago. I hope he doesn't go as far as to do something to the band so they have to break up....

Han-gyul: I sense brooding, hiding in your house, and heartbreak in your future my friend. Now that the truth is out here and in next episode, so rim's world/beliefs is flipped upside down, along with her budding career. Its going to take a few episodes for him to be on her good side again( and he just got on the grandma's good side! Sheesh) throw in a jealous yoo na, the manager, the CEO, and his father, and you've got a butt load of situations in the way of him and so-rim. (The CEO acts like his mom, btw. Or is that just me trying to include a trope? Lol)

So-rim: poor girl, she has been thrust into a world and dealing with emotions she's not ready for. I hope this doesn't dim her light too much. Could make for good songwriting though....

The music in this shows keeps me from giving this up, as I started out with Koop before dramas. I look forward to more songs, and hearing "waiting for you". I know that's gonna be a sweet song!

A little criticism, I think Joy cry too much, her character doesnt have depth, Joy purely playing herself. Hyeri was better, yes the writing was better but you have more feeling toward Duk Soen.

Joy has nice voice, cute smile, the character is likable. The drama feel like school 20xx than high schoolers and adults. If the drama goes straight like high school musical or glee, it still fine. But instead it tries to be high school and adult while the boy group is still very much young boy than adult-man. I know because of the source material so the drama just go somewhere in between.

In Korea, trainee dont meet each other, trainee dont allow to date. And with a band that have a come back, they wouldnt have time to do anything else.

The drama is light, cut, puppy and rainbow, the music is nice. But i wish they didnt have the age gap, I could easier root for them if they are all high schooler, make the first love purely pure.

I know that's a big thing that she did that but still, sometimes, small gestures count a lot. I mean, they stuck with her even when she gets them disqualified every audition they go to.

It's probably a factor of

1. She's taking them for granted, like you do with your friends you've been with since kindergarten and family

2. She gets torn into office politics and is too busy being pulled around by all sides

3. She has the most aside time for solo recording/planning or other in the studio than the boys, so she spends less time with them.

I do wish the drama did a better job at showing the reason why she's spending less time with them, rather than just show a decreasing amount of screen time ( I miss teddy bear Gyusun!!!!) but I guess something needs to give way once we get to the Sole N part of the plot.

And she's just in high school. All my friends, when I was that age, took friendships for granted and most of the time treated other people like "oh you can take care of yourself right? I'll just be over here dealing with my very important teen angst" ? Teens are full of themselves, it's just how that age is for most people. They're busy trying to figure out themself and the world, so sometimes they aren't that observant regarding friends' hardships.

1

@Kaybee God, you just brought me back to 10 years ago. Or, ok, I'll be honest, 15. I won't say 20, I won't. :P

I used to ditch my precious little brother for people I just met, or *cough* "friends" *cough* as I thought at the time. I don't even remember what they look like now. I still feel guilty about it till this day.

0

That makes total sense. Now that I think about it that way, it makes more sense. But like you, I also wish they tried to input that to the drama even in subtle small gestures.

0

@earthna Hopefully, it will be part of Sorim growing up process shown in the drama, those "small" gestures. Because of how naive she is, all her life, she has been protected by her two friends, she got used to it. Jinwoo and Gyusun even said they can't leave Sorim to do anything alone. With some maturity and growing up (that inevitably comes with heartbreak), she'll need less protection from them, and start doing the protection herself?

0

@Kaybee about teens. I think Jinwoo and Hangyul and Chanyoung too are a bit like that, all too concerned with their own concerns to have much room for concern for other people. Jinwoo is a bit better, that is ultimate concern is Sorim, but at the root of it, is still his jealousy and immature love driving most of what he does.

1

Oh yeah, definitely. All the characters (or most) are pretty immature at times. At least Han Gyul is learning though, which is proper, considering his age as opposed to the trio.

And all the characters seem to genuinely do what they believe is right and with no real maliciousness, which is nice for a change, it's just that they prioritize differently from each other and often rather selfishly.

1

"And all the characters seem to genuinely do what they believe is right and with no real maliciousness"

and when they do wrong, they regret it almost right away.

This is why I like watching this drama. i don't have to hate or dislike the characters to the point of making it difficult for me to watch.

In korea, trainee can meet each other. You're mistaking YG policy of separating trainees to all companies' policies. Plenty of companies train the male and female trainees together, or let them interact, including the big ones like SM and JYP. They even let the debuted artists talk to trainees, at least in SM.

When a band comes back, they're super busy, not because they don't have time to do anything else, but because the comeback adds to their workload. Plenty film dramas, prepare for the next comeback, record songs, learn new choreography, prepare for concerts, DURING the comeback.

About the Age Gap : In my country the legal age for a girl to get married is 18. Yes, this might be a shocker for you, but that is the case with many countries. She is a high schooler, but she is 19 and HG is is most probably around 25, and I do not find it creepy at all. Why is this creepy to so many people? Cultural Difference ? But I see 18/19 year olds dating 25 year olds almost in every country including US, Europe, etc. Why is there an ick factor? I'm not being sarcastic(mandatory disclaimer for 2017), I'm genuinely curious .

Because sometimes, they find it icky because they either have been exposed to bad case of it, or can't picture themselves doing it, or have never been exposed to a case like it.

It's all about opening up your mind, and seeing that different people can connect and love each other, no matter how unlikely a match it seems on paper.

Well, when things are considered unconventional, it always makes some people uncomfortable, even if the parties involved are happy together. Depending on your culture and backgrounds, the conventions can be different. It used to be, people who were of different social hierarchy couldn't marry, because they were too different and could not be happy together. more than icky, it was considered stupid, traitorous, digusting, etc.

On reflection, after writing this, I think it's the pain that she feels that gives her some dimension, because that pain is so real, especially for girls her age.

The age gap is a major point in the manga, because it creates extra drama between them. She loves him, but feels she is not mature enough to stand beside him as an equal partner and fears that she is still inadequate and will lose him to a more sophisticated woman who can be on the same wavelength with him. He, on the other hand, has to be extra careful with her, has sometimes trouble understanding her generation's slang and doesn't have a thing for much younger girls, it just happened that she fell for him first, and he was depressed enough back then to give it a try, just to have a distraction from his bleak reality at that time. I generally don't like big age gaps in couples, but I don't mind this one, as it makes things so much more interesting.

About Chanyoung's coldness. I think it has to do with him being in the industry for so long as a star. He developed it as a consequence of trying to protect himself, since we saw his past wasn't cold. When he told Sorim that being famous would bring problems it tells us how bad he had.

I'd add that it has to do with being good, but not enough to be the best. And being intelligent with it. You have all that potential you know is inside you, but can't use it any where, it makes people become cynics and/or apathetic, or sharper. I don't mind the edge in him, as long as at the end of the drama, he doesn't kill every one with it. A bit of injury would be ok.

First of all, I want to take this opportunity to thank Gelai. I asked for drama recommendations in the last open thread and Gelai mentioned this drama. Thank you! I'm officially addicted. Watched all the available episodes in one go!

I understand why Hangyeol lied and the timing didn't help at all too. However, I don't get why he tried to hide it even on the night the teaser comes out. She will obviously know and she will obviously not like him lying to her and yet, he still kept it to himself.

The show is frustrating at times but the characters are very interesting. There's no one side to each of them. They have tons of layers. I wish we can see more into the Crude Play members' thoughts. I love them too!

Joy's voice is really nice. I'm glad she gets to showcase her singing here.

Thanks for the recaps!

I don't think he intended to lie the day the teaser came out.

From what I've seen, he got drunk, agreed with his friends that he should tell the truth even if he's scared she'll be disappointed at him, then went to the practice room to tell her and reveal himself, but he saw Chanyoung at the practice room and ran after him to talk to him, then by the time he called her on the rooftop to tell her, Chanyoung was pissed off at him and told Sorim not to answer her phone.

@ Dramaninja

Arghhh. Midnight snacks. I have a love hate relationship with that. On one hand, it looks delicious as hell, on the other, where in the world am I supposed to find jjajangmyun or fried chicken in the middle of the night in Finland, when I'm watching dramas and craving for them. Dramas are dangerous. And the worse is ramyun. I see them cook ramyun, so I crave for it, and cook my own, except, I have no egg, and no all the things they put in it, and worse, no golden pot with the lid. So I end up looking pathetic with my little pack of ramyun, and getting more bloaty after eating it, with the craving still intact. Argggh.

0

Oh, ramen is 100% the worse. I always get major cravings when I watch characters slurp up their ramen in dramas. it drives me NUTS.

We keep finding out more and more about the layers under this world the drama created. I don't know if it's because in the manga, it's like that as well or not but I like that the world-building happens every episode. It makes everything much more complicated for poor Sorim, but makes me a happy viewer. I love meat, even in dramas. Hahaha.

Thanks for the recap, I love the "comments" you made on the ep, they're spot on!

The pacing keeps throwing me for a loop and making cliches feel fresh. At the rate they're going, I hope the rest of the world learns who K is sooner rather than later. I kind of really badly want to see how HG would deal with the sudden attention lol.

The scene where he sang for So-Rim was way too autotuned. It's fine that they do that to the performances that would be autotuned irl anyway, but it doesn't work well when it's a performance where such equipment is nowhere in sight. Missed opportunities to show that no singers/musicians are perfect and the contrast that often exists between idols' studio and live singing. Which is odd, because it's exactly what they're trying to highlight with Crude Play's sub-plot. So why, oh why, autotune what's supposed to be live without techs there? It pulls me out of the story's reality..

That scene with Hangyul serenading Sorim was my top 3 favorite scene this episode.

I felt jealous at first when I saw the piano, because Yoona said he used to play for her too. Then, he sang her lyrics, not his, and looked so sincere, and she smiled and cried, and I didn't care anymore about jealousy or not, because that moment felt genuine for both of them.

Lol there should be a rehab for autotune addicts. Maybe the music director longs so much for tonal perfection, like Han Gyul, that he overuses autotune to the point of abuse haha.

Though I'm pretty sure that whistling scene was an actual flute or other windpipe instrument, not a human voice. The sound really took me by surprise and gave me a good laugh with all its dead-serious pretending lol.

Required fields are marked *

JJH is my favorite Korean actress. And yet nothing's working for me in that show. Maybe it's because LMH is being the same dead fish as always (sorry to his many fans, I just don't get his hype), but the show feels so off. I'm only watching with one eye by now and I'm only at ep 6.

The writing, the editing, nothing works in lobster (Imma steal that if you don't mind ;). Despite this show being possibly more flawed, with a much greener cast, it captures something human and warm, some special charm, something that lobster lacks.

0

looooooooool. Watching you guys call that drama lobster is tooo funny.

Kaybee, it gets better in the middle, and somewhat ok in the end. Never reached addiction-level for me, but gets better or I got used to it.

That said, I agree, this drama, is doing a better job at writing. I'll even be blasphemous, and say I connect more with the acting here. It's not necessarily better, strictly speaking, but the acting feels more like real characters.

In one word, like you said, this drama has charm "lobster" (LOL) lacks.

0

Whew, now I'm a little more motivated to finish lobster (though I'll probably be too full to eat anymore seafood for a while after!).

Yeah, the acting is much easier to connect with in this drama. And I think LHW is every bit on LMH's level, but then I don't really find that to be a very high bar to begin with. Joy even feels more relatable than JJH, which feels like an odd thing to say. Maybe the difference is in the directing?

0

re: lobster (pffft. we're going to get scolded for this)

The difference, I feel, is that Sorim is a much more organic and relatable character than the mermaid was. She's much more lovable, likable, etc. We've all been her, known someone like her, or wished to be her, or read a book/a film we loved, where the heroine was like her. She feels like a real girl, with every girl's youthful pain.

1

PS: if you need to save time, watching LOTBS by reading recaps and just watching the scenes you find funny should be good enough.

0

That makes a lot of sense. The character writing is pretty bad in lobster, maybe that's why LMH is even more of a dead fish than usual. It's pretty lifeless, which is ironic considering that she probably belongs under the category of seaLIFE. (Bad pun much too intended. I apologize.)

Liar's characters, on the other hand, feel very sincere. Again, pretty ironical.
Or maybe I'm just so tired that I find bad jokes and puns under every rock. I should just get myself to (sea)bed.

0

OMG Kaybee (kay's unite!), I nearly spit my coke reading your onslaught of puns. Hahaha.

0

Pfft, glad that one person at least finds me spew-worthy (well that sounded gloriously gross, but you catch my drift. I hope.)

I was scrolling down the comment section and kept seeing your username and getting really confused thinking I'd sleepwritten a bunch of comments. Yeah... tired times a thousand. We should form a union. Ka Kay? (As in Korean for go. So "go Kay!", but not in the leave-sense of the word go, more in the vein of "hwaiting!", although it really is high time this Kay go.

Oh, the emergency exit's over there you say? I'll just scadaddle then, before my unfunny non-jokes start attracting flying tomatoes.)

I need sleep.

0

Haha. Kaybee, go to sleep. I can feel your sleepiness from the page away. Or your drunkness. :D

0

Lol better go then. Nighty night. Sleep tight and don't let the bed sharks bite!

(Just for the record: Don't worry, I don't drink and drama ;) I'm just sleep-deprived and no sleep always makes me silly lol.)

0

@Kaybee Haha. I definitely drink and drama. Most of the time, it makes the experience better because it makes the flaws hazy.
I don't drink when I want to savor the drama fully, or when I don't want miss any details, or the drama is too complicated to watch while drinking.

The first two cases apply to Liar and Lover so I don't drink when I watch it. Although i drank after watching for sure. Seeing Sorim suffer is not good for my heart.

0

Ahahaha, lobster is now stuck in my head. My problem with this show was that there was ZERO chemistry with the leads. They looked more like a brother-sister duo to me. And then I went and actually heard LMH calling JJH noona behind the scenes and was like - shit, I can't ever unhear this.

Wouldn't they need to autotune his voice if he can't sing that well?

reply

Required fields are marked *

My point is that the character isn't advertised as great or even good or decent at singing. He's just very musically talented when it comes to songwriting, pitch, instruments etc. But singing is something else entirely, because it depends on your physique + it's a sound coming from your own body. So you can be musically brilliant yet a horrible singer and LHW is perfectly capable to sing that song. It might not sound genius, may even sound sharp or flat, but it wouldn't take away from his character's authenticity. This, however, does. Because how on earth would his voice be autotuned in a setting like that with just the two of them there?

That said, it's also just bad sound engineering. Today pretty much every song has auto tuning (yes, even those by excellent singers who are more than capable of singing it perfectly live), but if done well and with a singer that has at least some grasp of melody and notes, it won't be noticeable, even for a pro. So for me it feels pretty inexcusable to have such obvious autotune in this kind of situation.

You can even autotune live performances these days, but in the bar-scene who would be doing that and why?

Han Gyul getting upset is not something I love overly much, but I appreciate how it's always consistently in character. When he got mad at her about not telling him about her casting, it was because he couldn't understand how she could prioritize anything over music, which is his everything. Almost every time (or is it always?) he gets mad, it involves music.

In any case, I'm glad he apologized. He was still feeling the sting from missing out on producing her, and was deflecting that frustration on her, thinking if only she told him earlier, he could have taken the job. But doesn't work that way buddy, you can't say on a whim you don't like celebrities singers because of you ex-girlfriend to a young girl who has a crush on you, and NOT expect her to take every single one of your words in seriously

I started watching this because my sister wanted to watch this. Long story short, as the "oppa," I'm in charge of playing parental guidance and screen everything my sister watch first, so my over-protective parents can feel good. And then cut anything too "racy" (tongues *rolls eyes*) from the footage.

I nearly died in embarrassment when I showed up in cinemas for this one movie and everyone in there were elementary school girls.

I was supposed to watch just the first 2 episodes and let her know, and this is the first time in a while I can say without being too embarrassed that I'm watching my sister's drama. I love dudes in the band, and the music is really good. I connect with Hangyul the most. I feel him, I had my fair share of screwing up with a girl before.

Thank you for the recap. That ending overshadowed what happened in this episode, so reading your recap reminded me that a lot a lot a lot of cuteness also happened.

Just the moment when Hangyul is turning into a sweetheart, Chanyoung has to screw it over. Oh well, Hangyul made the bed, he better lay on it (for 1 episode or 2 at least). I'm rooting for Hangyul to get the girl, but I don't mind him having to suffer for a bit. Sorim did enough chasing for 5 episodes, his turn to run after her.

I was honestly getting ready to feel mad at Hangyul for shouting at Sorim, but then, he apologized and explained it so sincerely, I couldn't help but forgive him for it.

One thing this drama does right, is that Hangyul grows every time he makes a mistake. Compared to how he made me mad during the first few episodes, this time, he got a lot better at rectifying his mistakes.

Nice one of course.

It's a testament to how much I care about the characters, that no moment feels boring for me. It seems like we discover new details about past relationship, present tensions, etc. with each conversation, so I just lap up all the mystery. We get details in breadcrumbs, but by the end of the drama, I feel pretty full.

To be honest, I was almost shipping Chanyoung with Sorim before, but when I saw how sweet and beautiful Sorim and Hangyul looked together, when Hangyul sang to Sorim, I switched boat. When I watched that scene, I was like "this is what being happy together means," and I could glimpse into what their forever future could be like.

Yes, she smiles and laughs with Chanyoung too, but the connection between her and Hangyul during that scene was just beyond anything.

From the pictures alone, Chan Young or In ho. From the drama, Shi Hyun. In real life, if Crude Play was a band, I would go for Yoon most probably. I tend to fall for the guy that is a bit hotheaded but genuine, a bit playful.

0

The ones who are more my type when I date: Shihyun, the drummer, Lee Seo Won,

The one who would most likely be my bias: Hangyul

He looks young and fragile enough I would want to protect him, but also, he's looking fairly hot in that photoshoot.

0

Hangyul, definitely hangyul. Such a cute puppy. Or Yoon. The hottest one would either be Shihyun or Chanyoung. Shihyun for maturity, Chanyoung for looks. Inho is not bad himself.

0

My bias, In-ho. I like the quiet guys.

0

My bias, Hangyul or Shihyun or Yoon.

0

why would you make us choose why???

Han gyul for this picture https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C8t9o-PUMAA4WfY.jpg

Otherwise, Chan Young. But I ahve a weakness for Shi Hyun. Darn it, I can't choose.

0

My bias would have to be Shihyun.

0

All five of them!!!! Together!! Forever and ever!!! Seriously, I like Crude Play best when they're all besties. I was watching this BTS video where Crude Play OT5 were choosing between Twice and Red Velvet (they chose Red Velvet, ofc, duh) and I was like, this NEEDS to happen in the drama. All boys need to be friends and get along and have fun together.

0

I've got to hand it to TLAHL, it's not easy to make nearly all the characters flawed, but interestingly and organically so.

For a teen drama, this is pretty well written. I'm reluctantly impressed. I don't love it yet, and haven't fallen in love with any drama since SWDBS (which I'm sadly but slowly falling out of), but this drama is the one with the closest shot at getting my love so far.

At first, I stayed because of the easy to watch fluff, but now, I'm staying because of the characters and writing.

The ratings are low, but the attention it's been getting is high. On Tving, it's on the top 4 most popular dramas (including Goblin), on Dramafever too, I think it was top 5 or something. It's always trending after it airs, and the response has been positive mostly. It was ranked as top 4 most influential drama in the past week. It's just not many people pay attention to it because of its juvenile premise, but most of those who do like it.

You know, after reading the comments, and the wodnerful recap by SailorJumun, I'm almost reluctant now to call this drama "fluff."

It's providing me a lot of healing and insights into what is happiness, and ambition, and to make me recall what I used to think as important just a few years ago, just simple friendship, passion, love, versus what I somehow now think is important, while forgetting the most important parts are sometimes the simplest. Maybe fluff can provide me all that, but I'm surprised all the same.

After watching the first 4 eps last week I read the manga. I'm glad to see that others are talking about it here too, because I want to, but I was a little worried it might put some people off since of course the drama is a whole different animal.

I love the sweetness of this drama. I think it's fun. I think someone mentioned on a previous recap that the manga is indeed darker and more mature. Something interesting that there are very different, but well-developed backstories for the characters in both. The manga of course goes further into the backgrounds of more characters though, which makes sense.

I wish they showed a little more of the bonds between the friends in both bands in the drama, because that's the stuff I love!

The other thing I miss in the drama is how everyone calls So Rim's character Mush bc her hair is reminiscent of a mushroom in the manga. It's cute.

Something of note in the manga is that CEO Choi Jin Hyuk is WAY sleazier and intensely manipulative. With a wife and child, he openly peruses all his female recruits. There was one striking scene where Yuna is wistfully remembering how he said "What do I do?! I found a genius!" to her while pointing at her when he discovered her. The scene flips to him doing the exact same thing toward So Rim when he hears her singing in the park. Here's the craziest thing he does - he sees Han Gyul's potential when he's a newbie, but since HG never wrote about love, he purposefully sets him up with his own lover (Yuna) so that he will write songs of love and heartbreak. WOW!

I think discussing the original source material in any adaptation should be fine and would add to the discussion. As long as the storyline discussed has already been passed and done with in the adaptation, that is.

I feel like we might see more of Mush & Co, and Crude Play interactions, hopefully. We already saw the boys of Crude Play take a liking to Jinwoo (and of course, they love Sorim).

One change I liked from the manga (among many I've got to say), was the change with Jinhyuk's character. They made him still inscrutable but less cartoonish, which the manga can afford to, but the drama can't.

That scene where they were shoving each other to get to Sorim in the rehearsal hall had me chuckling.

First, the Crude Play members just shove Jinwoo aside to talk to Sorim. Then, Chan young got jealous and shoved Crude Play aside to take Sorim away. All those boys vying for her attention, man I'm envious.

I'm currently watching more serious or heavier dramas: Whisper, Tunnel, Radiant Office, Perfect Wife,

And just finished two serious ones: Defendant and Rebel.

With Chief kim ending last week, and Bongsoon getting into the kidnapping part, I really needed this drama in my life.

It's easy to watch, but with well-written characters. Fluff with the biggest problems being music and love, but well done enough, the problems feel real. It's the perfect light little drama with substance for me to take a break for all the heaviness.

This drama keeps surprising me with how thoughtful it is.

I loved loved that little conversation Sorim shared with Hangyul about her mother. It explains a lot about how music is so important in Sorim's life. Or maybe literally music is her life. It brings her happiness because to her, music equals her mother's warmth.

It also explains why she fell in love with Hangyul because of his music, and because she saw how important music was to him. He literally took her phone out of her hands, and closed his eyes and got lost in his music. They had that in common.

Maybe I should go back and rewatch Dream High to remember how awesome it was. Because right now, the thought keep bugging me that this is a better executed drama than Dream high. Call me crazy. I feel crazy for saying this. I mean, dream high is the drama that introduced me to my ultimate virtual bf KSH. And so, I feel crazy for thinking that Sorim could give Song Sam Dong a run for his money as far as puppy talented lovesick characters you want to protect and hug. My favorite scene in this episode was when HG was feeling SR's forehead and she was too shy. HG being slow, was oblivious to her shyness.

And then Grandma caught them in the "compromising" situation and he had to go through her interrogation and impress her, while SR is giving him hints. I loved the entire sequence. It reminded me of when my father caught me and my husband in flagrante delicto on a date. We were just smiling at each other, not even holding hands, and my father made my husband sit with him at a cafe for over an hour. I was embarrassed I didn't know where to hide. Of course, back then, it was a big deal. And i just KNOW, when my daughter will get her first boyfriend (or already has, who knows), my husband will most likely do the same.

You've got it right about CY's move being less like a petty second lead stealing the girl, than a desperate hope to somehow save his music. HG showing interest in CY's project for the new group renewed all his insecurities and made him go into a panic.

At this point, aside from JW, I feel like neither CY nor HG view SR as a serious romantic interest. They're mostly interested in her for what she can provide their music. Of course, they're not unaffected, especially HG. It's clear he's starting to see her more and more as attractive and pretty just as SR, not just her voice. And while he continues to indulge her in her crush, it's no longer something he finds irritating, or has to deal with, but something he finds makes her cute. Progress.

As much as the common ground of music between So Rim and Han Gyul has been discussed, I appreciate very much how this episode also highlighted their difference in outlook concerning music.

During that scene where Han Gyul got upset at So Rim for not singing for him, just because he said he didn't like girls who sang, all he thinks about is her as a singer, a musician, the same mistake he did with Yoona. He can't understand why she could choose anything over music, he lived for the past 5 years with just music as his priorities, at the cost of his relationships, because that's the sacrifice he believes needs to be done to accomplish what he wants musically. It might have to do with the fact that he grew up with his musician father absent, and his mother too busy. That might have led him to think music and people can't be linked together.

Then we've got So Rim, who also loves music like him, but who grew up with her mother singing for her, and her grandma and neighborhood loving music. To her, music and people are not only BOTH important, but also inseparable. Music means mother to her, she grew up with friends doing music, and instead of sacrificing people for music, they have been with her supporting So Rim all the way, doing auditions. So she doesn't understand the notion of sacrificing one for the other. They're both important to her. To her, they're inseparable, just like how her love for Han Gyul translated from her love for his music.

This is where I feel So Rim will be able to change Han Gyul. Because while they both love their music, their views on what it means is different. He seeks perfection, she seeks emotions and comfort. He sacrifices people, she does music WITH them, for them.

Chan Young too, has the tendency to believe that people need to be sacrificed for music, as he told her on the rooftop that she might need to sacrifice even people she likes during those 3 years. I hope she will change him too.

4

Required fields are marked *

Also, Han Gyul's father's music was stolen from him by his bandmate, which further reinforces the negative connotation Han Gyul has between music and people. So Rim, on the other hand, doesn't associate betrayal of loved ones with music, because she hasn't been betrayed (yet.)

Nicely analyzed. He said he felt warmth in So-rim's voice, which is probably a warmth he craved since he's so meticulous about his music.So-rim, on the other hand, lacks artifice, and all she has, is the warmth from her personality, and like said in your comment, it's a warmth she got because of her love of people and music, both together.

Personally, I find Joy's voice, more than warm, very comforting, and almost healing. It's not perfect technically, but soothes me when i listen to it.

Required fields are marked *

About Chan-young, I think So-rim will give him a sense of worth and self-love in the end. He always is insecure about his music, which is most likely the reason he feels such a strong envy towards Han-gyul. But So-rim seem to genuinely like his song, and genuinely wants to sing it. And he has to believe her, because So-rim looks so sincere about it. The fact that she likes his song will maybe change him, or make him fall in love with her, I believe. However, i haven't read the manga so I could be wrong.

Everybody in this drama is using someone else for music, except for So-rim and Han-gyul's father. Even Yoona, who was yelling at Han-gyul seconds ago it seems, mellowed down when she mistakenly thought he made a song for her to sing since he told her she had a good voice in the past.

Chanyoung's reaction to Sorim confessing she has stage fright confirmed what I thought. So far, he's been so obsessed with escaping Crude Play, that everything revolves around that. Instead of thinking that Sorim's problem as something he should care about on a human basis, he only saw it as an obstacle in his path. I could see him visibly stiffen up and his brain working out a way to get out of trouble.

It feels like So-rim and her fear of auditions is something she can deal with, most of the time. But when something upsetting happens to her, like when she shows up late, or loses Zeze, or sees the back of Yoona, it brings up the bad feeling, and it drags her into herself and she can't escape from it, and that paralyzes her because it reminds me of her feelings of childhood trauma.

Is it me, or does it feel like CEO knows a lot more than she lets on? She seems to know (or the reporter), that Yoona is dating Jin-hyuk.

And she keeps giving Yoona a hard time, and making her show the premise to the reporter instead of a staff. Why does she pick on Jin-hyuk and Yoona? I'm really curious.

If my assumption is right, both companies are Corporations. Corporations are basically separate and legal entities with of course legal rights, like a person, to an extent, which makes them capable of buying shares. WHO Ent must've bought Sole N Music's shares and they are also probably the major shareholder since they are given managing rights, again to an extent.

They are still separate entities, and basically still rival companies because of the nature of their business. However,, shares are like the lifeblood of corporations and major shareholders are basically the 'boss'.

I hope this explanation helps, I'm currently on caffeine and is palpitating to make much sense. Geez, why do I drink coffee??aaaah!
