Dramabeans Podcast #33
by javabeans
We’re trying something a little different this time, so the format will be a little looser than normal… in that there isn’t much of a format today. More like a free-for-all. And rather than going drama by drama, we wanted to focus more on actors today — any and all that we could think of, in whatever order we thought them up.
Note: We recorded this podcast about two weeks ago and then got swamped with premieres and whatnot; it was before the latest batch of premieres with Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Jealousy Incarnate and the like. Better late than never?

Please, please consider putting your podcast up on Stitcher. I can only listen on my iPad and Adobe Flash doesn't work. Stitcher is a great way to get your podcast out to a broader audience too. I love Dramabeans and I'm so sad I can't listen to the podcasts :/
If there is a way to listen on an iPad, please tell me how.

oh, you beat up my poor Taec! for the majority of us who don't expect much from him, and actually not even aware of his lack in acting skills until it was mentioned in the recaps, we thought he did just fine. As opposed to Suzy who is really bad, I'm done with Uncontrollably Fond and I haven't even started.

I don't think that the majority of people weren't aware that he was a bad actor and thought he was fine. If you look back at the comments on the posts about Bring it On, Ghost leading up to the premier, concerns about Taecyeon's lack of acting ability was a really common thread of conversation. A TON of people posted that they were worried he couldn't act the emotional beats of the drama well, which let's be honest, he can't. He has plenty of other charms, but he is not a strong dramatic actor.

Oh the good looks and the acting skills well......
ahem well on the plus side he looks good...
and all my dear beanies can correct me if I am wrong, but most of the time our prayers to drama-gods are to not have him cast in some role that may need him to showcase his stellar acting talent (pwaahhhh) than his stellar eyebrows...

OMG! When you guys started talking about PBG, I had to stop midway and type this. I soo want a Pt.2 of this podcast now so that you can talk about his performance in Moonlight. I still remember seeing him for the first time in the Nodame remake and was completely mesmerized by his acting and not to mention his looks. Hopefully he'll have a long prosperous career.
Question: Since you mentioned the effect of directing on acting, I'm wondering if an actor's failure to deliver (due to bad directing) actually translates to simply bad acting? Like, they're actually bad actors? I haven't seen any of the shows you mentioned to exemplify bad directing so I can't really connect between the two.

I'm one of the sad people who's been sleeping on Park BoGum's awesomeness ? I'm loving him so much in moonlight!!! I saw him in nodame and reply but he didn't really do anything for me. Today I found myself watching my first episode of 1d2n because he was in it ? I love him so much ???

if you haven't already, i'd watch the mystery drama i remember you, which aired last summer with jang nara and seo in-gook as leads. park bo-gum had a significant role—he was SO GOOD. first time i'd ever seen him anywhere. he was gloriously creepy in it.

I have to chime in and recommend 'I Remember You' as well. I am kinda glad I got introduced to Park Bo Gum in IRY first and then watched Reply. Coz sure he's great at playing 'dopey' puppy but IRY was always there to remind me that he can play against the type. (though it could be argued-he is a bit of a creepy puppy there...I know that sound's weird but it's true!)
and I tune into Moonlight largely because of him!
I am not sure how much his pout has blinded me, but I do think he can play varied characters? Like I get the comparison with Soong Joon Ki and the pretty-ness being sometimes a limitation, but I dunno. At least from what little I've seen, I still want him to flex his acting muscles and take up varied roles, maybe over time.
It's a bit like Yoo Ah In (recommend definitely for your next actor podcast though with army duty- sigh) who is a bit of a puppy when it comes to looks but has been glorious at playing against that type. I dunno if Park Bo Gum could pull it off but I would definitely tune in to see him try.
Also, to my utter delight, I have been able to say 'puppy' way too many times in this post. :D

Bad directing can exacerbate a problem and create issues however a good actor can usually work with what the director wants even if hes not great at articulating it. It's a developed skill and not something easy.

This has always been my take on the Reply series. Those people are amazing at matching "actors" (broadly speaking, often) with roles, and then directing the heck out of them.
As an example, who'd have thought that post-Love Rain Seo In Guk would become a star? They seem to do that in every drama, take someone untried or relatively new and really make them sing. Or take non-actors or relatively limited actors (the guy from Sechs Kies or Go Ara) and give them a role that suits their limitations, and do everything they can to work around their limitations.
I have a lot of respect for that franchise.

I am going to probably get so much hate for this but I feel that between Park Shin Hye and Ryu Hwa-young, RHY is the prettiest one and her acting is better. I don't hate PSH, I really don't and don't get me wrong PSH is also very beautiful, but I feel like RHY's acting is more broad which also adds to her appeal. She is able to express more emotions through her eyes and make more facial expressions than PSH. I feel like PSH has lost noticeably weight especially in her face and for some reason the way her neck looks sometimes concerns me. She used to have a chubby face with chubby cheeks and I feel like that suited her more than how she looks now. It's just that she looked good before and I can't help but wonder if she was pressured to lose weight by her agency or if it was a personal choice. I had this same concern for Ailee when she had her comeback a couple years ago, she later came out and admitted that it had been her choice but that she regret it so who knows maybe it was also PSH's choice.

I'm a Park Shin-hye fan and you'll get no hate from me for saying that - after seeing Age of Youth, I have say Ryu Hwa-young was fantastic there. I hope her career flourishes, because she certainly seems to have the chops for it.
That said, I think they're both gorgeous and give off very different vibes despite their similar features. It's interesting to see (and also interesting to contemplate how their differences in image make them more appealing to certain demographics).

I actually don't think that RHY>PSH is an unpopular opinion... I've seen it bounced around here and there.
It's a little hard to compare acting skills imho because they're playing very different parts - RHY does supporting comedic femme fatales and PSH has done many leading candies... if all things were equal RHY would win anyways. I think RHY is killing the parts she has been giving though. And I think she speaks and has better pronounciation than PSH, who kind of sounds like she has a lisp sometimes.
As for looks, RHY (and her twin) and PSH are both gorgeous girls with very similar features but they give off different feels, which is kind of in line with the kinds of characters they play. RHY looks more mature and is taller whereas PSH is kind of... cuter looking. I miss her chubby cheeks though. I had a total girlcrush on her face a year or two ago, but when she was on running man recently I was surprised at how strange she looked.

RHY and PSH resemble with each other but not to the point I would call them doppelgängers. And as for their acting, I don't think it's really fair to compare them on that department because RHY haven't had to carry a drama by herself as a led yet and more over they don't even play the same types of characters. I still remember after Heirs, people were calling Krystal a better actress than PSH for whatever reasons (prolly because the character was sassy and not weepy) but that has stopped after she's so lovable LOL.

somehow i just don't see the park shin-hye/ryu hwa-young resemblance. i guess i see it in the shape of their lips, but despite watching them both in different dramas every week for weeks, i never once thought that ryu reminded me of anyone. so it's news to me that people think they look alike! haha
i actually think park shin-hye's weight loss suits her. the chubby look was cute when she was younger, but she's older now and she probably wants a more polished image. she's been looking thinner since heirs/pinocchio though. i do think she looks more gaunt in the face in doctors, but she doesn't look unhealthy. but i tend to think most people will look better/prettier with a bit of weight loss, so long as they don't take it too far.

I think weight loss for PSH will open new doors for her. She can't forever look like 'Kim Tan's girlfriend' or that little girl Han Jung Su who got stepped over by her step-mom.
I think the weight loss and missing her 'chubby cheeks' is getting out of proportion, she really needs new types of roles and she herself expressed that the last thing she wants is her acting to stagnate. If other actors are allowed transformation for their role then why not her?

I think Ryu Hwa-young's been chosing to play parts that let her act more freely than the usual candy girl. She portrays women who are attractive and sexy, yet relatable and vulnerable. She's building a wider career range for herself by taking smaller but edgier roles.

Thanks for the awesome podcast!
There's just one thing I kind of disagreed with and that's I thought Taec wasn't nearly as awful as people say he is and that the drama got boring. Contrary to that, Let's Fight Ghost was the only drama that made me want to keep watching out of all the dramas out right now. The couple was cute and it always had me on the edge to figure out their pasts. I also really felt emotionally attached to Bong Pal and Taec's character especially when his dad died. I don't know just my opinion!

It's a good drama, though. Just not as unique as Misaeng.
For me personally, Heard It Through the Grapevine was a very close second to Misaeng even though its genre and tone is completely different from Misaeng. It's great if you want to see a black comedy take on typical kdrama happy endings that land up with girls marrying chaebols.

Regarding the bad American/English accents: I just watched the Chinese drama "Lover me if you dare". I liked how they mostly pretended that everyone understood each other. So American actors spoke English. It was a lot more pleasant than the nail-on-a-chalk-board of stilted English.

Yes I agree too actually! I honestly have never been super bothered by her acting. Like I acknowledge it's not the best but it has never ruined my drama watching experience. For example, I loveddddd Gu Family Book and it's still one of my favorites and I thought she was pretty okay there. While they should have hired a more talented actress for such a complex role, I don't think Suzy should be completely written off as an actress. I believe she needs to start back from the basics and do some small second lead roles to improve in her skills. She has made leaps and bounds from Dream High so hopefully she can improve more if she works harder.

I'm commenting on different points as I listen...
Ya can't wish Ahn Jae Hyun didn't take Blood too much, because that's where he met his wife!...ah but you addressed that later in the podcast.
I didn't know all those details about Yoon Eun Hye's career demise. That makes sense. I loved her so much in Coffee Prince, but not in much else..
I agree 100% with your comments on Lucky Romance. Ryu Jun Yeol carried it and made it magical. I, like you, found issue with Shim Bo Ni’s character, and also with her disservice to denim. Hwang Jung Eum irritated me in She Was Pretty as well, so I searched my mind for an actress who could have somehow saved this raving lunatic. My mind landed on Jang Na Ra, coincidentally! This sort of ties to your praise of her as a talented and lovable candy gal actress. But back to Ryu Jun Yeol. He just sparkles. He is also my actor crush, and I have had very few in my life. My love for him reminds me of my love for Jonathan Taylor Thomas in the 90s. XD
Interesting comments about Korean beauty standards for actresses. You can definitely see how more variety is present with male actors. The actresses you mention as having the different/newly accepted look are unquestionably beautiful in my eyes! I am distracted by faces that are so obviously plastic and botox (I think you could even see Hwang Jung Eum’s injection marks in Lucky Romance, while she always plays seemingly innocent, unassuming, authentic/natural gals!).
If you do a FB live cast some day, you could have people commenting and participating while you broadcast. Just a thought.
Really enjoyed listening to my first podcast here! Thanks gals!

i agree with you. RJY saved the drama. the story itself is all over the place in the first ep, and Bonui character is really frustating. the story is wasting RJY and HJE's talent.
I didnt watch SWP so i cant say much about HJE, but she was awesome in KMHM and Secret and i feel bad for her to act as Bonui.
and the director should thank RJY to save the drama, because without it, the drama is going to be more worse. all knetz drama is all about je suho, je suho and je suho. noone care about how the story because everyone know the story itself already frustating to watch lol.

Have you watched Youth Over Flowers Africa? You'd like it, Ryu Jun Yeol's personality shines through.
Maybe there is something to the fact that unconventional looking actresses are taken more seriously. I would identify Han Ye-Ri and Kim G- Eun as the best actresses out there right now and neither of them look like the typical kdrama leading lady. So maybe I'm showing a subconscious bias? Although I find Hwang Jun Eum's need to dress down just more distracting than anything...

I don't know if it's just because I don't know Korean, I wouldn't have thought that Suzy was an inferior actress to IU. It's so clear to me in the recaps that IU only has one expression and it's the deer in headlights looks that she does in every shot.

IU's performance is better than the recap screenshots would lead you to believe.
That wide-eyed expression is not her finest moment, but she's actually expressive - you don't need to know Korean to work that out, if you actually watched her in motion.

I'm watching Moon Lovers live as well as reading the recaps, her limited expression is more apparent when you can compare it screenshot for screenshot. Probably doesn't help that the director insists on tightly framing everyone's faces.

I disagree that she's got only that "deer in headlights" look - having seen her previous work in Producers, I'm more convinced that's the result of bad direction than anything wrong with IU herself.
She does very well at subtler emotion, like in her very first scene where she's down on life and complaining to the homeless man, or the one where she gets back from her encounter with So in the bath and realises she's 'home'. Whatever her faults may be, she's not wooden- and she's doing a lot better here than Suzy did in the early eps of UF.

It's been ages but The Heirs keeps on coming back to haunt us. It ruined LMH for me too. I was okay with his long small screen break to somehow erase (if it is even possible) his Kim Tan from my memory in time for his upcoming drama.
I laughed so hard when JB and GF were talking about LJS's shoulders. The tiny head to broad shoulders ratio was awkward (in a cute way I guess) up until IHYV and DS (because it was highlighted when he lost so much weight for the role), but he was already looking quite bulky in Pinocchio. I agree that now, in W, he looks his best. Definitely manlier and a lot less lanky.
I cannot wait for the next podcast because I'm pretty sure LJK and his mane of glory will be discussed. And the adorkable PBG too!
Thanks guys!

Well... Suzy acting is make it obvious she is lacking so much and get exposed her lack of acting because In UF her character actually requirement a talent actress to pull off if you don't have it, then It's done. Put PSH in that role she will get expose as well.. They are really miscast to put her in that tragic female lead role... It's just doesn't work... But she is still bearable compare several actor who are well loved by many here but Actually if take deeper look at their acting performances, they are just as bad. Hype really make people blind to see their fav acting ability.

Actually, Park Shin-hye did her first melo lead role in Tree of Heaven at age 16 and was pretty well-received in it too.
I very much doubt a melo, of all things, would 'expose' her the way you're trying to imply. Or any of those 'several actor who are well loved by many here' - complaining about other commenters' imagined tastes isn't going to win your fave/the actress you're trying to defend any points.

Worry more about your own bias's acting instead of immediately coming after other actresses who never even worked with them.

True. PSH has never ever said that she is the best actress and she is incredibly humble. Given her popularity, she could have demanded bigger roles in movie industry but she has herself said that there has to be ticket selling power within her before she could do that. Even after a key role in Miracle in Cell No.7 ore the sleeper hit Cyrano Agency she could have rode with these movies success. She knows her place and how to stay in her lane. It's not like she has received major acting awards and even those she have received was only after years of hard work. Unlike certain other actresses/actors even after showing very little talent, just riding of their image, popularity and looks.

I feel like Hyeri and Ahn Jae Hyun are a case of actors with no acting background getting their main role too soon in a crappy drama that no one really came out of unscathed. Which is an all-around disadvantage to them because I feel like they could've probably been better if they had more time before getting their lead roles or if they were working with a group that knew how to lead them. Like Answer Me 1988 for example or Park So Dam with AJH in Cinderella (although that latter part is just the impression I get from their BTS).
Heirs absolutely ruined Lee Min Ho and roughly everyone in that cast for me. Except for Kim Ji Won and Kim Woo Bin (but ugh! uncontrollably fond whyyyy).
And I'm honestly curious about where the rest of the young talents are in the Korean entertainment industry and why they aren't getting more exposure? Asides from Kim Yoo Jung and Kim So Hyun, where are Jin Ji Hee and Park Gun Tae and Park Ji Bin and when is Lee Hyun Woo going to find himself in a good drama I can actually appreciate him in?

On these kind of situations, I do wonder if the actors already involved know what a mess it's already snowballed into but they just can't get themselves out of it anymore? Like, I wonder if Joo Won's dreading this as much as we are and if he's just praying that everything gets stalled until he has to enlist for the military so he can go ''oops too late i'm sorry (not sorry at all)''

I don't think any actor can get out of a drama he already signed up for. He's gonna have to hang in there and make lemonade out of lemons. The drama isn't short of acting talents, I think OYS is a good fit. They just got upstaged by the show that was going on behind the scenes.

Yeah, UF was the worst comeback imaginable for KWB into small screen, and I totally want to erase it. Shin Joon Young character is awful and his acting isn't phenomenal either. I hope he gets a better role. And I wish Kim Ji Won would come back with a carefully thought project, because DOtS was so big that it may inflate her 'bubble' and a flop after that drama wouldn't do any good.

Uncontrollably Fond is just unfortunate, both in the story of the drama itself as well as how it was received. Woobin's acting really became great by the middle of the story but even I can't keep watching just for him anymore. I got to 18 episodes and then came a freaking Truck of Doom again, how many times will people have to get hit by cats and trucks in this drama?!
Pick a better drama next time, Woobin. Maybe do a drama with a talented young actress like Kim Ji Won? They had such great chemistry in Heirs and she didn't choose a new acting project yet after DotS.

I agree that there are many new promising rookie actors, I am especially a fan of Seo Kang Joon, Hyungsik from Zea, and I am not sure yet about Lee Tae-Hwan, but hope he does well too.
In case of female rookies, I actually think that thing about beauty standrads is true and not true, I mean Moon Chae Won, Park Bo Young, Kim So hyun and Kim Yoo Jung , Park Shin Hye in my eyes are not beautiful, they are more on a cute side and have a girl next door look, like go outside and you see bunch of them, but there's some kind of energy in them probably that makes them stand out, in in many dramas I feel like male lead is better looking than female one and when I just started dramas I felt like the whole point of dramas was to show people that outside beauty is not important, usually they had plain looking female lead and stunningly beautiful supporting actresses playing bitch characters, so being classically beautiful in SK actually felt like a curse for an actress cause then she would be typecast as a bitch, but probably on the other hand Korean standards of beauty something I never understand ( like 2ne1 Dara or Gu Hye Sun), so I honestly think face, talent and such things are importnat, but more important are connections and the ability to charm people and knowing people, of course personality is important, I think one of a reason Kang Haneul being stuck in supporting roles is one of examples, he lacks charm and probably connections, but well, sometimes luck helps too

I've tried all Suzy's dramas and I couldn't go beyong ep2. I don't understand how come Suzy continues to get roles. Her kind of "actresses" is ruining Korean dramas. I can't believe the drama producers pander only to the Kpop fans who I believe are smaller in number and in buying capability.

She is really bad, not even idol actress bad, just plain bad. She is super pretty and likeable so that makes people trying to find excuses for her bad acting.People denying one of big reasons UF failed was Suzys acting or lack of it is what irritates me. Yes the story had missteps and it dragged in few parts but a good actress would make a story more engaging with her performance.

I agree. One cannot help but think how different it would have been if a different actress, one with more experience in melo, had the role. I hope she looks at this as a learning experience and do what it takes to improve even if it means taking acting lessons and smaller roles or roles that fit her.

Suzy would have been fine, if she had stuck to characters she could pull off (like sassy, haughty side characters) but she or her agency keep choosing (and she is offered) way too challenging roles for her actual skills. She really needs to stay in her lane and venture into bigger roles gradually after she has actually improved.
I still can't believe KBS actually gave her a best actress award, and over better actual actresses for that matter. That year she really just rode on her popularity from architecture 101 and her pretty looks and first love image and took home awards from KBS and Baeksang. Even after many viewers have expressed that her level of acting shouldn't have granted her such big roles, PDs still want to cast her (they actually prefer her over Park Bo Young lmao). When her bubble bursts, I really hope her management humbles down.

Suzy seems to take acting roles more for 'actress image' and status to keep up her cf rates, than because she has any talent or even interest in acting.
There is no way she will ever step down to second lead roles instead of lead, not while she still has popularity and people keep offering her roles and finding excuses for her. JYP also won't allow it, unless the first lead is a much huger star.

Her bubble has been intact for so long, I doubt it's gonna burst unless she retires

It's actually quite annoying, because actually talented actresses don't get the chance to show their skills because someone less competent is casted due to their looks and popularity. The industry is really corrupt that way. Only those who have consistently improved and started off by playing smaller roles and gradually taken bigger roles when they could carry on themselves are the ones who really deserve lead roles.
I still can't understand that a much more talented Kim Ji Won hasn't have a lead role whereas less talented Suzy is being showered by offers from PDs to lead roles... Talk about having a powerful agency, and media play behind you. Seriously even after her last movie flopped and now UF flopped (in a way, b/c it was aggressively promoted months before AND pre-produced, and still her bad acting showed), South-Korean viewers expressed their frustration over articles that kept making excuses for Suzy.

Oh! I love Lee Jong Suk... He made me fall in love with himself because every character he plays is just awesome. You feel connected to them and W just made me insane for him. My 1st LJS's drama was Pinocchio and after that I liked him and tried his other shows, but W is just mind boggling <3 <3 <3
Hope he gets his due, because he seems like a passionate actor. Moreover, his characters are no restricted. He tries new things...Never thought I will like a guy like LJS, because he looks so delicate, but now I am in love with him and finds him very charming and handsome :)

Great, I was already over MotW but now that Park Eun-bin's name has been mentioned I want a re-edited version with her and cannot un-imagine (is that a word? Lol) how perfect it would've been with her in KSR's role.

I was diligently following Lee Min Ho's dramas until Faith. I even liked Personal Taste. Then Heirs came along and ruin LMH for me. I agree with javabeans, it wasn't just about Kim Tan. It was also LMH's portrayal of that role that made it worse.
When I first got started on kdramas, I thought LMH was great. Over the years, that perception changed. Well, let's see if his mermaid show revives some of my liking for him.

OMG, I was just thinking the same thing when watching Bring it On Ghost: that Taec looks a lot like Song Seung Hun! lol
However, I found his acting in it not so bad at all, I'd say it was actually good. I think it suits him to play characters like Bong Pal since obviously he is not (yet) able to do the "deep" character types. He sold Bong Pal to me and if I hadn't read Taec is not good at acting prior to BioG starting, I wouldn't have noticed.

I really really finds Taec awesome in Bring it on Ghost. He never left me much impression in his other shows. But here he was very good for me. Not only as a cute hero but he managed to bring tears in my eyes in the emotional scenes as well. I thought people will be more acceptable and open to him after this drama, i mean there were people who refused to watch the drama just becoz of Taec. I am sorry to hear its not like that. and what is that about him not believable as a smart brain??? He is really a nerd in his real life though he likes to goof around and i somewhere read that he was named as one of the smartest/ brainiest/ high IQ idol. May be its all about the image.
I personally wish him all the best. That his album will do well and his army life will be enjoyable and the experience will mature him so much so to wash off all the stigma about his acting.

And about actresses, first and foremost Kim Seulgi. Park Bo Young, Baek Jin Hee, Shin Hye Sun, as well as all the child actresses besides Yoojung and Soo Hyun like Jung Dabin and Nam Ji Hyun.
And omg, how could I forget Lee Joon? ! He's forgotten too many times :(

Hey loved this podcast! I like the whole non- structured way in which you guys flew from one actor to another.
I agreed on almost everything you guys said except about Suzy and Taec. I have just seen them in Dream High so maybe I don't know their work as much as you guys do, but they are both doing heaps better than what they did in Dream High. Specially Suzy because she was really emoting well in the last couple of episodes. Or maybe it helps when hers is (surprisingly) the most sane character in the show (next to her brother).
If you both are reading the comments- I would love it if you guys talk about SEO IN GUK. I think we have heard Saya, Lollypip, rejoycie, dramallama, and festerfaster talk (read: rave) about their love for him at one point or another, but I think I think we are yet to read your views on his acting skills (and/ or hotness)- If you had talked about him earlier then I am sorry for missing out on those posts.
And if you do talk about Hyun, can Min be far behind. But I guess for the next podcast you would already be planning to talk about Park Bo Gum and how cute he is- along with Ji Chang Wook, cuz by then his show would be out too.
Looking forward to your next podcast.

I mean Taec was in a chess club in one point of his life and also majored in business Administration, so I can get behind with him teaching maths.

Just finished the podcast, I agree about everything especially your take on Suzy/Han Ga-in and Taec/Song Seung-ho (although I found Taec ok most of the time in BIOG).
But I do fear for Saimdang...what were they thinking casting SSH opposite Lee Young-ae?! I've seen a trailer and the facial hair hides a lot of his prettiness in the Joseon part, so I won't even be able to distract myself from his acting by just staring at his face. ?

I, too, hope the range of beauty for actresses widens! I also tend to see some actresses kind of get locked in certain roles because their looks lean more on either side from "Candy" to "Femme Fatale" and I want that to be mixed up too. Like, lemme get a dangerous woman that looks like Jang Nara. Lemme get a hard-working type that looks like Park Shi Yeon.
