Happy Friday! It was the first time I forgot to wear something green on St.Patrick's day. I blame old age :(
Loving all Wed-Thur dramas. Excited for new dramas -Ms.Temper, Memory. Sad and not so sad for more drama finals -Six Flying Dragons, Dazzling temptation.
btw how awesome is SFD? Can't believe every episode of 50 ep show can be this good.

Some from interview with Park Hae-soo (35) who plays Lee Ji-ran, sworn brother of Lee Sung-gye.

In the show, Lee Ji-ran has hot temper personality but also has absolute loyalty toward LSG. LJR was Jurchen but when he met LSG in a war, he surrendered and became LSG's sworn brother.
Park Hae-soo says there is one common characteristics between him and LJR- innocence. "Even though I don't have hot temper like him, I can't cut ties easily with people, and continue same relationship to the end. Considering people relationship is important, innocence, and thinking simple seem to be similar." But unlike bold YJR, Hark Hae-soo is shy and even acting cute, "Responses from my family are overwhelming because of popular SFD. Finally I got acknowledged from my family". He says when he rides subway or bus, people greet him with saying "Sungnime~" (the way he calls LSG in the show, meaning hyungnim/older brother).

About casting, he says "It is thanks to Sin Kyung-soo PD who like (theater)plays and musicals. He is play and musical mania who always watch for good performances, and I have known him for a long time. When I heard he was doing "Three days" in 2014, I went in for an audition. Unfortunately I had the scheduling conflict with a play I promised to do, so I could not do it. But he remembered me and offered the role for SFD. I was excited just by hearing it was about founding of Josean by LSG and LBW. When he gave me Lee Ji-ran role, I was scared even though I wanted to do it." He says he had no idea how to portrait LSG's right hand LJR. Also he says in the drama 'Jung Do-jeon' in 2014, Sun Dong-hyuk Sunbae/senior did great job, so
he felt extremely burdened about playing the same role. "I was worried a lot because Sun Sunbae portrayed LJR perfectly. How can I dare to exceed sunbae? I was happy getting a role, but I thought this is big trouble. I had no idea how to integrate the character. I also worried if I can't do it right (since acting similar to real figure is important), I could mess up the show. So I started to study. I analyzed and researched history and this person."

One thing made Park perfect as LJR was his Hamkyung province accent. "I studied custom, people's trends, land situations in Hamkyung province with the teacher who taught me the accent. Since there are particular characteristics with people who ride horses, I tried to study about their habits." He studied his accent everyday so much so that he can say 'Sungnime~' even if it is not in the script. He still studies his accent and He says he will practice until the drama finishes...

"Actually I am embarrassed to say I try hard. Because every actor and staff in SFD is putting all his/her passion and efforts in the show. Chon Ho-jin/LSG sunbae whom I serve masters his lines before shooting, and gets OK right away. When you have perfect sunbae, how can Maknae/juniors can be lazy? Even though I am supposed to be about the same age of LSG, I am actually the youngest in LSG's line. Youngest can't mess up the good work, you see."

About LJR character, "At first, Sin PD said he wanted to see Lee Sung-gye's toughness and exhaustion from fighting many wars, and passionate side reflected on LJR. PD said it would be nice to smell blood. Park says it was his honor working with Chun Ho-jin(LSG). LSG was trusting, highly regarded hyungnim to LJR, and their relationship continue outside of filming. "Working with teacher Chon is real honor. Just looking at his eyes is thankful for me. I learn a lot watching him by his side. He is respectable as man. He gave me answers easily- When there are too many thoughts, just do it simply, and he threw me the parts that I need to sort out."
There was time he was center of the talk. When LSG was caught in the trap set by Jo Min-soo (invited LSG and his people for a Party). YJR fought bleeding hard to protect LSG (Yes, we all got nervous if he was going to die) and that scene made news. "I didn't expect that. Because I was shooting, I haven't had a chance to think about responses. But I received lots of texts from acquaintances. I was thankful for all the interests."

YJR went through two strife of prince historically. "Rather than having any expectations, I am thankful for this character being alive. As a character, I wish I could just watch the relationship between LSG and BW." Park talks about characters often with other actors. "I play and talk the most with Bang-gwa(Soo Dong-kwon), Bang-woo(Lee Seung-hyo), Young-kyu(Min sung-
wook), Mu-hyul(Yoon kyun-sang), Nam Eun(Jin Sun-kyu), and Jo Joon(Lee Young-hang). We meet privately, talk about work, and have drink together. Interesting thing about a drama is that you do not know the end of your character, so you can only dedicate/do you best at the moment. It is really fun to contextualize with the lines given in the script. We talk about our curiosity about our future. We say "I was like this historically, but would that happen here?" (oh no what about Mu-hyul- Imagine Yoo Kyun-sang sitting there with sad face).

In the show Lee Ji-ran wished he wanted to write a poem when peace time arrives. For the ending "I even thought to write a poem with hair down for fun. But I don't know how LJR will act. It will depend on how LSG and BW are portrayed I assume. I hope I can write a poem at the end. But I mentioned "When peace time comes" and I think drama might end while situation is still unstable. In history LJR left into a temple out of guilt after Bang-won took the throne. If that happens, that will be nice. As a character,...

As a character, it is nice to have a closure, but historically that happened much later." He hopes the viewers to see more than political plot in SFD. "This is a story about foundation of Josean, but there are also stories fitting present time. I wish viewers can see that. The relationship among people, relation between father and son- You will have more fun if you watch their friendship and loyalty more seriously."

btw did you know Byon Yo-han(Bang-ji) was the first person casted for the show? The writer Kim Young-hyun said "Bang-ji is sad and lonely character, and Byon has that image". About Bang-ji role, Byon Yo-han said, "I wanted to do it because it looked difficult to do. I wanted to face rather than feeling scared, and I think I am lucky. I think I will gain a lot by the time show ends."

Another long rant. Have a happy weekend everyone!

My first crush in SFD was Park Hae-soo's Lee Ji-ran lol. It helps that he was a gorgeous man and one hell of a general in history. Even Lee Seong-gye could not resist his beauty so he saved him lol.

He was always (an old not so good looking man) in the other dramas because he was actually older than Lee Seong-gye in real life.
Thank goodness to the fusion SFD for hiring Park Hae-soo to play Ji-ran. I liked him a lot so I ended up watching "God of War" because he was in it.

I'd love to see more sageuks with Park Hae-soo in future.

I do feel for Bang Ji. He is a broken and lonely man :(. I've always been a Moo-hyul fan-girl but I was totally on Bang Ji's side on eps 47. I do understand why Moo-hyul did what he did but I can't help but a little disappointed with him.

By esp 48 I was rooting for Bang Ji. Kick Moo-hyul's ass but don't kill him.

Thank you fan! I love hearing news about my favorites. I read the The Korea Herald but they don't post these kind of interviews much.

No romantic poem,looks like.
It is known that there is one written by Lee Ji-ran in the poem book "HwanWon Akbo' (per wiki)
Contents:
Xiang Yu who was quick like a tiger from Chu(state) and Liu Bang who rose like a dragon from a pond in Pei(county) fighting to win the world, throwing clouds and raising winds is something awe to watch. In this, last emperor of Qin who is about to lose his country does not know what to do.

In here, Xiang Yu and Liu Bang are compared to Lee Sung-gye's power, and last emperor of Qin is compared to Goryo dynasty.

0

Awesomeness! That makes me want to rewatch my all time favorite historical epic drama by a mainland production "Romance of the 3 Kingdoms".

I remember playing the video games with my brother and both Liu Bang and Xiang Yu were featured in it.
(Give me a video game based on history and I'd play it till I beat it lol).

Lee Ji-ran knew his history well! That was way before his time but that showed his loyalty to his sworn brother and his adopted country Goryeo.

Thank you for sharing :). It's hard for search for things like this because they are only available in Korean.

Happy weekend
I still very much in love with DoTS OST, especially the new one by KWill, I loved that song so much, the whistle part blew me away
I still very much enjoy DoTS so yeah . . . . !!
Marriage Contract : this is my jinx, I love this trope so much and the drama is surprisingly so pleasant for me, I like all the things happen. It seems less frizzy than I thought it would be but I understand the character position and pretty much agree with their choice. I hope for more ahjussi-daugther interaction and how they'll make a beautiful family together. Lee Seo Jin looked old but I feel like it works, maybe because UEE doesn't react much and appear to had so much burden in life that make her looked way mature. The drama vibe reminds me of Nagareboshi , one of tear jerking Jdrama that looked so simple but full of heart, the only things I hate about Nagareboshi is the brother that appear too early and all the things about the brother. It's nice that this MC doesn't have an antagonist or evil things so far and I just want to see them mature as family cause I feel like they all is match made from heaven. She is the perfect girl for him even though they haven't fall in love. She's calm, good chef, can work under pressure, or maybe I just doesn't have any problem with her for now.
The Imperial Doctress : I knew it would end that way, I should just watch the opening and the ending clip, when can I have Liu Shi Shi and Wallace Huo on screen anymore ? and you have to end it up that way T.T

Sanchez goes to SMTM5 audition! oh boy dirty sanchez/sancheezy, why you have to do that?

Imperial Doctress is okay but it definitely not keep saving for me, I watch for Wallace Huo and Liu Shi Shi on screen but you aren't gonna get much of that. It's draggy like all period drama , it's really slow and the heroine feeling is here and there. She is with one but think of another, I really like the Qi Zhen Emperor (wallace huo character), he is good, if only she loves him 1st.
It actually wasn't a sad ending , it's happy in term of period drama, I just feel like it the OTP should just resolve early and I can see them happy together forever. It's clear who is the better guy but the heroine keep on confusing herself,
I am not really regretting watching it, just don't have too much high expectation and take it as it presented.

I never watch SMTM, just listened to some of their release but my byy Sanchez go for the audition, I'll watch his part only

@kiara yeah, my original intention is to watch wallace huo in dragon robe, the dude is so fine . . . Forgive ny shallowness, but it really become okay drama,
For ancient times, it better not to know the ingredients, they tried all of the things they saw, it scary.

@manin Dae jang geum is those underdog story, pretty much abou how she cope up with her life. I watch it when I was in primary school and I rewatch it again, I think it still good

To be honest, Nagareboshi is why I can't watch Marriage Contract. Nagareboshi had a depth that I can't find in Marriage Contract (I've watched like 2 1/2 episodes?) – the lead are much more stock characters and events much more predictable and contrived.

Plus, Nagareboshi was really good with asking difficult ethical questions, which I just don't see happening here. The vibe here seems to be "Yeah, we're going to commit a crime. A crime! So I need you to play along with me", in Nagareboshi it was very much "What is right? What is wrong? Is it right to do the wrong thing for the right reason? etc" – philosophical & hard-hitting.

I agree that nagareboshi in 4 ep can handle the issue better. I think it because the doctor involvement and the patient that also the spotlight. They make it so personal and how people morally can handle that as donor or as patient.
While MC has different route, make the patient knew 1st and the donor wasn't the real issue, it just a condition to have contract marriage happen and to fool the authority.
Still..I can't stand the brother involvement in nagareboshi, it's too much, he should just appear in ep 6 or 8 to give a breath for the main lead. In MC, there's no sign of overly bad guy, they may appear but I find it an okay time to appear.

<it just a condition to have contract marriage happen

Yes... one of the reason's why it feels contrived.

I agree that the brother in Nagaraboshi is terrible – a very frustrating character, but he is one reason why Risa's predicament is truly difficult. Because she's stuck on him and literally has no one else and can't escape, either him, his debts or their past.

It's funny, because both Risa and UEE's character are similar on the surface – they both "poor, down-on-luck women", but I struggle to sympathise with Hye-soo so far. She's got a life-threatening disease, which should be worse (since she might actually die) but she's also got options, like a brother-in-law that wants to help her and a friend. She's portrayed as totally desperate but then she's also too proud, and when she gets even more desperate (diagnosed with cancer) she reaches out to a stranger instead who oh-so-coincidentally is rich and needs her kidney. They don't even know if she's a match and I'm still wondering why she can even think she can do this, given that there is no way in hell they'll let her be an organ donor as a cancer patient.

I don't know – too many complicating factors here that don't quite add up.

No, no bad guy so far but I certainly wouldn't trust the ex-girlfriend! She screams manipulative supporting actress already which is really not what this drama needs. :-(

I go to the drama for marriage contract and building a family together so I kinda predicted on how they played off the donor situation.
I find her ultimate reason is to make sure her daughter can live well after she's gone and I find it suitable. No one can take care of her daughter since they doesn't have any family that care about them at the moment.

Happy OT!

After nearly finishing a super tense (is that even a word?) kdramas a.k.a signal and SFD, I need to give my brain a break lol. Is there any good fluff/cute/funny k/jdrama?

DotS: Taking aside the humanity/ideology aspect which is the main theme in DotS (and I really appreciate how this drama represents it), but as a viewer and somehow can be shallow (lol), the best thing in DotS (so far) is the bromance between SJ and DY. Second best is the friendship between them and MJ (talking about the scene of the three in ep.8). Meanwhile, the romance between the main and secondary leads is at the 3rd place. Heck, I'm finally on board with DotS (although I wish I could find this drama years ago, didn't read those overly criticisms, so I could just enjoy watching it alone).

re: DOTS -- I didn't watch this week's episode. Last week's stint with heroine almost falling off cliff was inorganic to the plot...if there is even a plot. I hate trumped up action situations. I wanted in danger that came from a real situation in the story. There was no real plot. Just a lot of mooning around, emotional voguing set pieces that highlighted the romance of rescue workers, and contrived "dangerous situations."

Plus I have a real problem with overly self-righteous women characters who dislike the hero, slaps the hero, and feels hero should give her time to accept his "wrong" job. For heaven's sake! He's not a gangster. Maybe if it were a different actress.

All that said, if something like a plot kicks in...I might return to watching it.

"... and feels hero should give her time to accept his “wrong” job. For heaven’s sake! He’s not a gangster."

LOL ..... Well, that's true.

So far, I think the plot is these two main characters weighing the pros and cons of being with each other. Her, mostly, more than him. The wheels are turning in their heads and just as they may sway one way or the other, something happens (contrived or not) which serves to either confirm the direction they were headed or serves to dissuade them form the situation altogether. I think the "slowness", pace-wise, comes from those times where the characters have those wheels turning, but we don't "see it", per se, because they're just sitting around looking fab or contemplating the beautiful scenery. I dunno.

Is Descendants of the Sun considered a slice-of-life drama? Because I'm not getting the feeling that there's an overall plot and it's just about the story of a Man and a Woman working their way towards each other along with their friends while stuff happens which is really what forms the basis of most slice-of-life dramas.

It's like a glorified, glamoured up slice-of-life drama to me.

I really, really don't think DoTs is slice of life. There are way too many massive, dramatic events (which are massively contrived to boot) for this to be slice of life.

Lack of plot ≠ slice of life.

Itsukoi is a currently airing Japanese slice of life drama. It actually has a massive event – the Tōhoku earthquake. Except that we never see it happen, we don't know what happens right afterwards – we only see a calendar with the date before the earthquake (and since it was a real event, viewers will know) and then we skip to five years after where we do understand that there was an earthquake in 2011 and that some major things happened, but we don't really learn the details.... because the drama remains focused on the very mundane every day life, not on full-blow drama.

0

Ah...

Then what is DotS? Romance? That's it?

0

I don't know what it is, just that I wouldn't in any form or way call it slice of life.

Some people have described it as a romance-melodrama-action medley. Not everything fits into a box.

0

I thought its basically heir 2 in terms of plot...

this writer seems to not care or have plots at all...but have a male character and a female character...and interesting flirting/romantic dialogues (atleast for DoTs..can't say for Heirs..).. and lastly her PDs manage to get women who can't act / blank looks.. and men who are gorgeous, good actors,..and can sell lust..

And I admit..i didn't get heirs.but marathoned it because first time round..could not give it up ...well Kim kept me hoked..

And tis time round too..there is sthg abt how or what is wrking..but i got bored of cheese too with no story deve...and here in DOTS..nto so much..8 eps down..n i am still looking fwd to it.

Refreshing is the slight mature treatment of the romance...no fairy tale obsessive intense love

The Jdramas do slice of life better. That's because they don't (often) try to romanticize the slow movement of relationships. I would rather see wheels turning with an organic plot than over-the-top contrived stuff. I kept looking at the episodes and thinking, "Now if I'd written this, I would've...." That's always when I know something in the story is waaaaaaaaay off. The way I see it is: every action done by a character in a story has a ramification. An organic ramification. But when the writer either doesn't see the possible ramification/outcome, or ignores the ramification, or creates a contrived plot point that has nothing to do with the motivation/reaction of the characters...then why should I "believe" in the story?

I can ignore crappy plotting but when a story is slow-paced one would think the writer would have more time to fit in some true outcome of an action. But nooooooooo it's jumping from picturesque romantic non-organic scene to cute but empty scene to someone-in-out-of-the-blue-jeopardy scene. It just makes me want to scream.

"The Jdramas do slice of life better. That’s because they don’t (often) try to romanticize the slow movement of relationships."

My thoughts, too. I read a lot of manga and while there are lots of plain romance love-at-first-sight shoujos, the slice of life mangas do a fantastic job of building nuanced relationships over time (e.g Love so Life, Yotsubato).

I agree on the 'if I'd written this, I would've...' sentiment. It's a sign things aren't clicking the right way.

0

"... but when a story is slow-paced one would think the writer would have more time to fit in some true outcome of an action."

Quite true.

0

Yay! +1000000 to all... manga is my oasis when I'm tiered of show that only entertain my eyes

0

Yup.... I don't think this is slice of life due to a lack of plot, but a lack of plot due to crappy writing.

It's like the writers have some basic points in mind (we need a meet cute where sparks fly! We need a dramatic separation that establishes their looooonging for each other! They are reunited, must have skinship NOW even if that means flying off a cliff, CPR followed by instant-recovery and heroine being annoyed that she had her life saved*!). The things that happen in between those super-dramatic, super-romantic moments... I don't think the writers have realised that those should actually connect, organically. Because, yeah, events/characters have organic ramifications.

*truly something I don't get in kdramas: People who are rescued in tough situations or literally have their life saved ALWAYS react by verbally/physically assaulting their lifesaver?!?!?

0

OMG you. +1billion. I love you. I'll make sure to look for your comments next time.

0

Agreed. There are a few Korean writers that get slice of life (Kim Woon-kyung is sublime at it, for instance), but that's about it. I'd argue that some western shows have been able to get it right (Mad Men was excellent slice of life, for instance), but in my experience anime/manga is where it's at lol (I don't have a lot of experience with live action jdrama, but I'm guessing the storytelling is similar?). Kdrama just doesn't do shows like Cross Game, Hyouka, etc. Heck, even shows that are ostensibly about giant robots like Evangelion are usually slice of life at their core.

"if something like a plot kicks in"

This. Thats my biggest problem with the show (apart from the ost !!!) ... There seems to be no larger arc. Whats the central conflict ? Where is the show going ? I have no idea .... Are they seriously going to do i-love-him-i-love-him-not for 16 episodes ?

"Are they seriously going to do i-love-him-i-love-him-not for 16 episodes?"
omg this is me, if i think while i'm watching it. but i don't so, the drama's gotten considerably better for me within the past week. not that you need to dumb yourself down to the level that the show insults your intelligence, but honestly, dots is just one of those "enjoy the pretty people forming relationships and struggling/coming out victorious under high pressure situations out of nowhere amidst a pretty backdrop" shows right now, and thinking about it too much really just takes away ur enjoyment of anything at all. i used to think that i absolutely needed to have a stellar plot to watch a drama, and this still probably holds true to the people who dropped it, but the solid cast and song joongki's brilliant acting are making this a "worthwhile" investment of energy and time for me. plus, it's fun to give in to the hype (for me!)
and i don't know what about this drama is different, but i'm in love with the osts... somehow.... i usually hate them after they're overplayed to the extent that KES's dramas' usually do, or even as much as boys over flowers, but i love the davichi song and the madclown/kim nayoug song, and the kwill song?? goddamn.

DOTS is mixed genre of disaster (natural/war) / romance.

Definitely not slice of life. How in the world can this be like Misaeng?

it's just that it gives time to more minor characters, but that's done in the same way like disaster movies do - like Poseidon, Towering Inferno etc.

I actually tried to watch DOTS 3x, and gave up about half way through each episode. Everything just seems so contrived and unrealistic that I finally gave up for good.

Currently watching nothing - only two that look interesting, and don't see either of those with subs on Viki or Drama Fever.

Hi Everyone!

Another take on how DOTS might be viewed, ... thanks to @Snacks for bringing this up.

I started out chaffing too at unnecessary VIP surgery, car running to cliff edge and earthquake in a war zone when so much else could naturally call forth heroism, doctoring and burgeoning relationships.

But there's this other way of looking at it: This drama could be meant as an examination of ideologies that clash in parts and meet in others (of course through the characters of the OTP) and how these ideologies change (and the characters grow) when different external forces impinge on them.

Then it becomes understandable why we get the 3 (or more) seemingly random events happening with the OTP in the center of them. This show seems to be produced and played out as a very long movie with a great epic feel to it

I'm guessing the romance elements are KES' forte but the structure could be the work of other writer. The romance elements are definitely strong (like the music), but I'm agreeing with @Snacks that this is not a romance and if seen as a love story with no plot, it will definitely frustrate me! :)

I agree with this, though I would put it simply as the drama is a love story stretched across a narrative cobbled together from different "emergency" set-ups.

So far, there's a scene not unlike the one in Grey's Anatomy where two people were skewered together and only one could survive, and the doctor had to make a choice.

Another looks like something out of Titanic or some action romance - close your eyes, honey and hold my hand - we'll jump together.

And the earthquake is like every other disaster type film - really reminded me of Towering Inferno, Poseidon etc.

But next up, is probably an action-thriller sequence involving the black market smugglers - it'll become good vs bad with the love story attached.

A little context for my ongoing conversations with @GB:

Like the literary tradition of romantic (in the sense of grand story arcs) novels at the beginning of the 20th century, DOTS is much more about how people change due to the circumstances around them rather than "how will this couple get together". Passions are set into a larger context and DOTS is beautifully exploring this.

The intellectual concept behind DOTS is 'how do we reconcile our humanistic values of our safe and rich society when faced with the reality that the luxuries of these values are supported by people who are willing to kill and risk their lives daily.' So interesting. So provoking.

Of course the primary couple had to be a soldier that kills on orders and a doctor. And a very noble one at that. That makes the relationship between killer and life saver, both who have honor, that much harder. Drama is all about normal situations that have been heightened!

The secondary couple has another theme that is used to underscore the theme of the first couple: 'which is more important, love or honor?' Do you do your duty and maintain your honor, or do you love with abandon? This is important because it explores the other issue with the first couple: can you love a person who kills for a living when your life is all about saving others? Especially when that luxury of living in a world where you can deem lifesavers as honorable is supported by those who are willing to kill.

Which brings us to the plot in 3 arcs. At the beginning, both couples are struggling against reason, struggling against values formed in a civil society, trying to reconcile chemistry with prudence. And prudence is thankfully losing. But once everyone gives into love, that lack of prudence will come and bite them in the ass. And that's going to provide the next story arc within the series. Clearly they are going to have to overcome the hurdles that their loves will create. And once they resolve those, they'll have to reevaluate and balance prudence and desire against each other all over again. They'll have to find a 3rd way in order to be together. And that will provide the final arc to the story.

It's a very nice plot. It's all about values. With a couple of love stories to highlight those.

If you only see DOTS as a love story, then you're missing the big picture. And I imagine you're a little disappointed. Because you're looking for ice cream in a steak shop. Enjoy the main course. The ice cream is for dessert!

Thanks for sharing the context of your conversation. I do understand where it was going and what the context was about, even from GB's post - I just don't give it much credibility personally.

Firstly, you draw a quick comparison to the literary romantic tradition of early 20th C. Could you please clarify as to what you mean by this? Romanticism is a genre itself from around mid 18th century onwards and changes quite a bit towards the early 20th C. If we're discussing the greats of Romantic Fiction, which I don't think we are - I don't see the comparisons of Blake, Shelley etc. My guess is you're comparing it to historical romantic novels, like "Gone with the Wind?" Or even EM Foster? That spans a huge array of novels - some done with more complexity and nuance, some with more of the heaving bosom type of depiction.

So for me, this comparison is problematic and raises questions.

The first is-why would a production of our 21st century times, try to emulate the so-called philosophical concepts of an era far removed from our current socio-political context? If it were a historical production that's one thing, but this is a contemporary production.

In terms of examples of historical productions - The Crossing - which tries to do this too, or Farewell My Concubine. But for me, those films try to depict the historical era they were set in - hugely globally sweeping times of change, that show people struggling with the change of values. A time around the two World Wars. A time before big data and networks, and drones. And thus, the questions they paint with a broad brush, seem to work because we have the inevitable historical lens that give distance, and by effect, we tend to accept a broader aerial view.

In that era, we would probably find the intellectual premise you speak of more provocative. But not in this era. ‘how do we reconcile our humanistic values of our safe and rich society when faced with the reality that the luxuries of these values are supported by people who are willing to kill and risk their lives daily.’

This is the kind of broad humanistic epiphany that was tossed around after WW1, when for the first time in history, we could kill at a distance and in great numbers. Then there was a period of optimism - surely, it won't happen again. But WW 2 happened not long after, with the atomic bombings, and then came yellow rain etc etc. And we know nowadays that our luxuries of sae and rich society isn't just about warfare, it is also about sweat shops, human trafficking. All that to make the latest devices and clothing we want at cheaper rates, to be consume so we are part of the First World.

The premise you state thus feels already redundant - we've been facing it for a century already - all the nasty realities we don't want to face that are interconnected with the price of lives.

And the point I'm making to follow that is also that in span of 100 years- the questions have changed and should have...

And the point I'm making to follow that is also that in span of 100 years- the questions have changed and should have changed. It is no longer enough to ask "killer vs life saver" or "love or honour"?

Post WW1, post Watergate, post The Fog of War, post Snowden - we already know the concept of "honour" is hugely romantic and toxic, and complex.

The questions we faced now as much more complex - they are more like:

Is it right to murder one person, knowing it will save thousands - but that the person actually hasn't done anything wrong yet.
Or is it alright to send drones to attack, knowing there will be collateral civilian damage?
Why can't there be honourable love between same sexes within the military?
Is it okay to betray your country knowing your country is doing harm to civil rights?

So for me, if you're a writer of this era writing about a situation supposedly set in contemporary times and you're going to write about peace corp, UN relations, a war zone - you need to be a bit up-to-date and not force old fashioned aesthetics and philosophical debates on a modern context. You also should be addressing tougher questions that are actually relevant to our times.

It is interesting how you describe the plot in 3 arc - how you described "prudence is thankfully losing, but once everyone gives into love, that lack of produce will come and bite them in the ass". Well, that part of your analysis probably rings the most true - in that yup, ultimately it is a love story.

Hence my post to GB was that the plot points of the earthquake (nothing to do with sweeping social values by the way) and the car incident, and the upcoming battles against black market merchants - is just the writer cobbling together already used concepts to set stages for which to draw the love story across. (There is no real huge sweeping social change in Descendants - the time period it depicts is not like in the midst of a great game-changing war.)

It's not that I don't see the big picture - I looked, and found it to be just a drawing made with big crayon strokes using simple ideas. So I find it more truthful to myself to admit nope, this is not a profound drama really. There are some nice human scenes, but they're not original and have been seen before in many a disaster/emergency/medical show. But it is what it is.

Yes, she did enough to have made the first move more than once! But I like that she was not super pushy and in-his-face, like some other kdrama females are made to appear. She still gave him room to decide if he would follow-up and make some first moves of his own.

As a guy, perhaps you find it quite a relief that the ladies take the initiative sometimes? :)

Happy weekend, everyone!!

My current dramas:

SIX FLYING DRAGONS - I couldn't believe the end is near! I was actually hesitant to start this as I wasn't really into long dramas, sageuks at that. But then the cast and writer-PD team was just too precious to skip and boy was I glad I got on this train. It has been an unbelievable experience! 48 solid episodes, wow!! Next week will truly be bittersweet! But I'm sure they will go out with a bang!! Fighting SFD!! :)

DESCENDANTS OF THE SUN - This week's episodes were the strongest ones for me so far. I appreciate the fact that the drama is focused on how they want to tell their story/stories. The lovelines took a backseat to the devastation that struck. The roles of the soldiers and the medical team were highlighted, as well as the human drama that unfolds in these situations. Of course, they didn't leave us wanting by the end of episode 8, lol! That was a cool parting gift to the viewers to signify that we're halfway thru our story, hehe. Loved it!

COME BACK AHJUSSI - Haven't watched this week's episodes but I am still in it mainly for Oh Yeon Seo! First time watching her and she just rocks!! I live for her scenes, especially with Rain and Honey Lee. Sometimes though, I find the shift from comedy to melo a bit jarring? Or maybe it's just me.

SIGNAL - Going through withdrawals still. Found myself watching some of my favorite episodes yesterday (episodes 4, 8, 13..). Best drama ever!! <3

Have yet to watch Goodbye Mr. Black and Marriage Contract.

Currently Watching

DOTS - pure popcorn

Mrs Cop 2 - Its actually very nice. Surprising that people are not really watching it. Kim Bum as the psycho is fab

Marriage Contract - gave up after 4 episodes. Its completely predictable plot. But why the hell is the show so sad all the time. They should have made the heroine one of those chirpy-optimistic ones. I know it would have been the biggest cliche - rich/grouchy hero vs poor/happy heroine - but at least it would give the show some levity

Need to start - mr black

Lol, it's okay not to like a drama, even one that is highly/widely popular and acclaimed. The thing with Misaeng is that only those who understand or have experienced how big organisations and the dog-eat-dog world work are probably the only ones who connect with it. And that's a lot of people in the world. If you're a student and or maybe an entrepreneur/ one-man operation/ freelancer/ artiste with lesser chances of feeling the choke of society/working in an MNC, then maybe you wouldn't understand or like it. The weariness/lifelessness of the protagonist actually stems from that where one is beaten down so many times and it's actually what makes the show so recognized since many people feel that.

Personally, I LOVED MiSaeng until somewhere towards the last episodes when I'd felt that the story's universe rotates about the protagonist and it just didn't feel real to me anymore. Perhaps it was because I felt that the main character was making terrible mistakes in an organisation that in real life could have had him fired long ago and yet many other characters around him help him and think he's fabulous like he was always right, which I thought not. Maybe I just really got the feeling that he DOESN'T suit organisation-life and should go work in a smaller, more intimate and less 'regulated' workplace. So 'loved' became 'like'.

But that's fine. Everyone has their drama. And no drama is everyone's drama.

Ooh, interesting. I love Misaeng but alot of my friends, who are office workers, didn't even finish it or reach halfway. They said that it was just too close to reality and they felt stressed watching it. I, on the other hand, found it fascinating precisely because I am in the medical field and the office environment, and the workings within it, fascinated me.

@bips99 - I echo Peeps' sentiments. It's perfectly okay to not like certain popular/much acclaimed dramas. We can't force ourselves if we are not moved by them. I actually dropped shows like Heard It Through the Grapevine, Secret Love Affair, Kill Me Heal Me etc as they did nothing for me, hehe. Hopefully we continue to find dramas that engage and entertain us.

Happy Friday and OT people!

I haven't been around much lately due to real life. My work always end after the OT is up, not to mention some other things have happened.

Currently laying here with an injured knee, and a foggy mind due to painkillers. Let me tell you, falling asleep to dramas + painkiller foggy mind = very weird dreams!

Kdrama Toddler style

- A fire drill lead to the 4 year olds playing fire fighters. It was fullt of dramatic rescues worthy of any drama.

- Two of the girls were fighting over one of the boys. WE even got the classic cliche of each taking a hand, and trying to pull him their way (think Heirs, just gender reversed).

- Second lead and his girl continues to be cute.

dramaland
I've been living in rewatch land still. Though I've been keeping updated on recapse. Goodbye mr black seems off to a good start. Also: Hello there Lee Jin Wook. Looking good.

Also tempted by the Descended from the sun recaps. I'm really enjoying the story and the frankness of the characters as shown in the recaps. Now to start watching! (once the painkiller fog goes away)

And not just the army uniform, a navy unifrom too! The guy just looks so good.

(speaking of uniforms Song Jong ki looks good in his too. It's the first time I see the man and not just the pretty boy in him)

I know! I'm a list maker, so it's going like this: 5 Terry Pratchett, Hamlet, 3 Baroness Orczy, both Stormlight Archive, Four Sarah M. Eden... No. Ok, 6 Terry P, 2--no--all Scarlett Pimpernel books, Hamlet, Just Sarah E's Kiss of a Stranger, The Book Thief. No.

And yes, yes he does. :) I know, right? Uniforms are dangerous and ought to be confiscated on the basis that they create heart problems.

0

*sneaks Stormlight archive back onto your list. casually sneak away* Love Brandon Sanderson and Terry Pratchett. Two of my favorite authors right there.

Haha I am not sure confiscating the uniform will leave less heart problems if there is no other clothes available there and then ;) But yeah, uniforms are magical in that sense. Same with a nice fitted suit.

0

Uniforms!

I swoon for at most a second upon seeing a man in one and then relive horrible memories of the life that comes with the uniforms.

Well, okay, I was being a little over dramatic. I wasn't abused or something. But that uniform life (ha!) is sooooo not for me. I just can't accept "because boss said so". I'm always a little impressed that when people choose it.

0

lol I love this thread, books <333

(and hey there. fellow Terry Pratchett fans! I feel sad that we have to live in a world without him, my signed copy of Making Money is one of my most treasured possessions even if my favourite Discworld books are actually the witches series).

I also hear you on the uniforms, they just appeal to the part of me that likes tradition and ceremony. Like they hark back to old-school ways but in a good way.

0

@Manin, Psh, did I forget to put Stormlight on there? It's staying. I love Brandon Sanderson. And yes, a nicely fitted suit does wonders.

@Peeps, I agree on the life that comes with it--not just the mentality, but the waiting at home. I know some people in the army and they're families, and I can only admire their strength and pray for their safety.

@Pogo, You have a signed copy of Making Money??!!! I think I just stopped breathing for a second. The Night Watch books are my personal favorites, but Moist Von Lipwig runs a close second. :) Bless You Terry Pratchett for your contributions to mankind.

0

Pogo: yay more Pratchett fans! So jealous about the signed book... Oh I enjoyed the witches series, though I my favorites are actually the Guards and the Rincewind (and the luggage!) ones. More specific Night's Watch and Interesting times

My all time favorite Pratchett book however is Good omens with Neil gaiman.

Peeps: I agree I couldn't do the military, though I respect those that do. So glad I could say no to the official call in for military duty though.

Gosh... "Good Omens"!! I must've read that two or three times. It is SUCH a happy, feel-good, witty little book. It makes me soooo happy.

Ever since "Good Omens," I've had Terry Prachett on my to-read list, but it's really Neil Gaiman I'm hooked on. Loved his Sandman series, as well as his other quirky novels. "American Gods," was a masterpiece. He makes writing sound so easy and natural.

0

Wow, Terry Pratchett AND Neil Gaiman fans here in DB!! Hello! Love both these writers and it's cool to know that they're friends. I enjoy their wit and humor and how they perceive life through their works. :)

0

I just can't do men in uniform. They can look all swoon-making but I'm constantly reminded they've signed up to some kind of system, either with belief or as a cynical careerist. And both ways, I just can't deal with it.

So cool to see so many readers here! Count me in as a Terry Pratchett fan too - Good Omens is definitely one of my favourites. I know his daughter, and when he passed, she wrote such a lovely tribute to him I was in tears. She's also an amazing writer but for games - and writes feminist kickass characters.

Neil Gaiman's Sandman series was a game-changer for me in thinking about graphic novels - don't know the guy though but my ex who is a book-dealer in the US crows about having cooked for him. Argh!

0

Woohoo!! So happy that Gaiman and Prachett are getting some love here..

Tori Amos, whom I worship and adore, also loves Gaiman, and mentions him at least twice in her lyrics.

0

@Cozybooks @Manin - my signed copy wasn't personally signed, I'm not that lucky!

It was one of those standard author-signed ones that somehow ended up in a secondhand bookshop (which boggles the mind, someone actually gave away a signed Pratchett?!!). I spotted it through a gap in bookshelves, and I swear I've never in my life moved as fast as I did to snatch it up, I was not going to risk someone else getting their mitts on it first!

0

Neil Gaiman's Sandman series are excellent. It was actually the first thing I read from him. Then I found good omens, which lead me to the other books. I have american gods, but have yet to read it.

Neverwhere is the Gaiman book I've read most. I actually have an audiobook version read by him. It's pretty awesome.

Pogo: Still awesome, though like you I wonder why someone would sell it! Their less, your gain though ;)

0

@Manin - Neverwhere is one of my favorite books of all time!!! I have multiple copies of that book with different covers. And try to convince people to check it out all the time (kinda like how I push them to try kdramas lol). Question about the audio book that you have, is it the radio drama one where Richard was played by James Mcavoy?

0

Jeanie: It is a brilliant book right? No, my audiobook is not a radio drama. It's just Neil Gaiman reading Neverwhere all by himself ^^

0

@Manin - Brilliant! ..There's also one audio file set, a radio drama published by BBC which stars James Mcavoy (love him!!) and Natalie Dormer (Margaery in Game of Thrones), in case you're interested ;)

0

I'm a big Lee Jin Wook fan as well. I could see myself dating him. There's always a twinkle in his eyes. Like he has this great joy within. He reminds me of a more manly Jung Il Woo. Ah my type! I love the joy-filled guys.

Two girls fighting over one boy? Ah, youthful passion! What do they see in him? What's his charm? as we say in dramaland.

Get up off those crutches soon!

I've had a crush on Lee Jin Wook since nine. Guy is handsome. And like you say, there is that twinkle in his eye promising fun and a little bit of mischief.

He is the quiet, slightly broody type. Very intelligent. Got curly blond hair ^^

haha thanks! Apparenly my boss is planing for me "to be creative" next week. To adapt my work tasks into something I can do. Guess The Viking Ark will be completed ;)

I'm dying of laughter @the thought of toddlers doing an Heirs-style tug-of-war over a love interest, children do the funniest things.

From what I've heard of Goodbye Mr. Black, Lee Jin-wook and Moon Chae-won have great chemistry but the action and pacing are a bit off? I might check in with this one close to the end, I want to check them out together.

Hello all:

Do not, do not, do not, do NOT get this cold. Avoid everyone who even sniffles near you. Don't shake anyone's hands. And even air kisses are not allowed.

Dramas:

Six Flying Dragons: I'm seriously amazed at the power of art. Last week I found myself not only rooting for sane normal folks to murder people in their beds (The Walking Dead) but for our villainous future tyrannical Bang Won to murder JDJ and the Crown Prince. I felt a little sad when the Crown Prince died and was so upset for Bang Ji. But eh...what can be done? What's done is done.

Signal: Great finale. Jo Jin Woong is my new ahjusshi crush.

Marriage Contract: I'm liking this. Perhaps because I need a good love story. But I hate all the unnecessary mega-complications. I so wish brother-in-law won't get himself into trouble to "pat off the debt." Don't people listen to each other in dramas? Jeesh! Heroine said the debt was paid off! Move on!

Mrs Cop: Really liking this. That actor who plays heroine's estranged hubby is sooo good at being evil. But...typecast much?

Come back, Ahjusshi: dropped

DOTS: dropped

Mr Black: Reading Recaps but will watch when our avenger returns. Besides, I love Song Jae Rim.

Awaiting with bated breath: Ms Temper and Nam Gun Mi, Memory, Neighborhood Lawyer, Monster

Should I watch?: Pied Piper

Have a great weekend, all!

Garlic and ginger are good for colds and they are a good base for any soup..along with thyme. It's best to use chicken with the skin rather than chicken breast. Something about the chicken fat is also a natural cold-destroyer. Take it from an old wife. We didn't become old wives if we didn't know all these recipes. If you want you can add some dumplings to the soup. I tend to just throw in pre-made dumplings or Korean rice cakes. But it should primarily be a broth with celery, one white potato, onions, and carrots.

You can also make a cough syrup. Blend some ginger and garlic and then put them in a bottle with honey. If the garlic puts you off, you can only make the ginger and honey syrup. Plus you don't want to go outside with garlic breath. A good herb is elemcampane...which helps get rid of congestion. And coconut oil rubbed on the back and on the head at night get rid of the pain in one's back when one has been coughing due to bronchitis. Alas, one's bed ends up greasy..but for health I'll endure a greasy blanket.

I wish I knew something for injured feet. ;-)

0

Hmm thanks for the tips, Carol. Currently have lost my voice so I sound like the Godfather, plus coughing and a slight temperature.

The man in the house does not believe in "heatiness" as it is not a scientific concept - and I have no voice so cannot persuade him that what i need is barley water.. But chicken soup - surely, everyone believe in that, right? I'll go tell him.

0

Sounds interesting *plans how to get to the store*

Haha if you knew something to cure injured knees you'd make a fortune! ;)

0

Manin, make sure it's not the dreaded flu. Not sure how powerful anti-virals are but some flus can cause pneumonia. Go to the doctor to make sure you don't get an infection from the congestion etc. If the doc says it's only a bad cold, then def go grocery shopping. Those herbs and foods really help.

0

Carole ~

That sounds good all the way around. Garlic, ginger and chicken.

I did watch a movie on Hulu, Garlic Is As Good As 10 Mothers, an ode to the wonders of garlic.

We have a gallon jar of honey infused garlic. Strange sounding, right? After several months, the honey has tamed the taste of the garlic. It's hard to describe, but it's tastes good and is good for you.

I got cold since four days ago and its still here and there is no sign it will dissappear soon TT
I just glad to found you talk about its remedies.
Do you mind if I ask something?
If I want to make the cough syrup with garlic, ginger, and honey, can you tell me the exact measurement ?
And can I use it right away or I should wait ?
Thank you so much.

Hi Dramapanda and rhienz:
If it's the horrible cold that's going on, it'll take about 3-4 weeks to get well. Hope the home made recipes will help you. I tend to just make the syrup from whatever I have on hand. Try not to take garlic or anything in the turmeric family at night. Ginger can keep some folks up because it tends to activate the body. Use the syrup right away. And if you can't just get some ginger root and boil it. Ginger just makes everything flow so that will relieve congestion a lot. As for the coughing, if your back hurts a lot from coughing, rub coconut oil on your back and it really helps.

Hope this helps.

I hope your health get better

Up here in Canada I've read that the brutal cold flu thing we are having this season is a mutated recurrence of the H1N1 virus that caused so much havoc in 2009. It was also known as the "swine" flu. I was one of the first people to come down with it in May 2009 when people in my province were only getting it by being in contact with recent arrivals from Mexico. I was volunteering for a refugee orientation group then. I was so sick I thought several times I might die. Only time I've ever been that sick in my life. Yes, wash your hands often especially if you are on public transit, avoid people who are coughing or sniffling and don't touch your face. This one is horrible!

Because it is a mutated strain of the virus, it's not as bad/deadly as the original H1N1 of 2009. I got the unmutated version which was actually killing young, healthy people and was quarantined for about a month. My sons had to stay with my in-laws! I do know people who are sick with it right now, though, and they are still very sick with a horrible cough and very bad sore throat and it seems to be lingering for weeks. It's definitely something to be avoided.

Happy OT everyone. I decided to come out of my shell and post in OT.So hello there *waves happily*

Currently watching:

COME BACK MR. AHJUSSI - This is my guilty crack now!Love the wacky humour and the heartfelt feelings in it . Quite like the way they deal with same-sex relationships so as to not come off icky.
Two Ahjussis are sweet, Rain is serviceable, LMJ could do with a bit of improving, OYS rocks bad ass,(I'm shipping the bodyguard, Honey lee and Rain with her) and Honey Lee is amazing.Somebody give this lady a drama on her own already!!! Will keep watching till the end and hope it will NOT go into too much humour or melo.

GOODBYE MR.BLACK - Hmmm..the first episode did not draw me in completely-but am ready to give it a go MCW and the dimples.

SFD- Heaven.Love it to pieces and dreading next week after which there will be no SFD :(

To start:

DoTS - Heard mixed reviews, but will watch for the beautiful cinematography and SJK :)

DOTS -- I'm loving it. Loved episodes 7 and 8, and how the earthquake aftermath was depicted, how the story focused on the side characters, about life and death.

Refresh Man -- I think WK sent YT to sales team 3 on purpose, knowing she would be capable of reviving it. I bet the team will get to love and protect YT too. I can't wait for a competitor/second male lead to show up in the story, though. But please no clinging ex-gf, although I wonder if WK has ever dated anyone (since we are to believed he had a crush on YT)

1N2D -- I'm watching it on KBS world YT channel so the latest episode is still behind the one airing in Korea. I didn't enjoy the last girl friend special that much. I want to see guests other than the usual comedians! I want to see games or races different than the usual stuff.

Off topic -- this is a long shot but I'll still ask... Does anyone live in the SF bay area and has ever bought Etude House products in a local store ? I'm looking for some Etude House eyebrown pencils and was wondering if I could find any, in stores, rather than purchasing them through Amazon. Thanks !

I just finished episode 19 of Answer Me 1988 last night, too! Instead of zooming through the finale, I ended up rewatching the bits with Taek and DS again and again...

There are parts of 1988 that I really love love love better than 1997 (I tried but couldn't watch 1994), but perhaps cos I was around the same age as those in the 1997 story, it just holds a dearer place in my heart still.

But what a feat for the writer and PD and all involved.. It's turned out to be such a great franchise, so heart-warming and real. If the writer were ever to shoot for a fourth series (not that that is what I recommend), I'd like to see a male lead faced with a dilemma between choosing two female leads instead.

Do you know what I find hilarious DB folks.

I find the eternal dragging of Heirs quite hilarious and tbh it has turned into one big comedy at this point and Heirs detractors should debut on stand up comedy.

An admittingly during it's air time we all ate that thing in masses and for us it was like one of the best dishes served like a hot arabian/Indian Rice mixed up with delicious Chicken meat, salad, pieces of tomato with lime and chili as extra hand flavor and we ate that thing quickly and it went down and shitted out couple of weeks later then the detractors come in the picture saying that we ate a carcass for 3-yrs running and keep reminding us that it was a carcass.

This pretty much sums up everything in quite hilarious light. tho I feel bad for my fellow Minoz and Shin Hye fans stay patient you got robbed of your credits but aside from the jokes I honestly believe they pulled something magical but it went down with titanic somewhere deep in the ocean not forgotten tho but dragged from it's resting place somewhere deep in the atlantic sea close to the spanish coast. It is what it is but eventual I think it has something to do with the K-world being somewhat of conservative and yes even I-Koreaboos and they form a small community who are anti-populist and whomever gains some sort of ridiculous fame will be targetted and treated inhumane and the same with the K-media and K-english media they are clear anti-popular figures while they mediaplay and give all sorts of credits to these who has less fame.

example someone who imho is mediaplayed is KSH compared to PSH while in all truth PSH is more popular then KSH but his parroted in the mediaplay while PSH has zero mediaplaying to herself she is natural and just there on the ride and ignored.

There is not much patriotism in korea in that regard example MLFTS got insane mediaplay to make it appear it was more successful then it was while Heirs got the other way treatment while it did insanely much better then MLFTS internationally overall and had 4-5 times bigger fanbase. they are the unsung heroes. Life is unfair to some that actully put the work and achieve something real with it. the way things run in korea is undesireable with it's excessive mediaplays and celeb draggings

you know, you'd have a better argument if you weren't contradicting yourself in the very same comment by complaining about the popularity of a drama that was well-loved by both korean and international fans - including dramabeans. Nielsen ratings don't lie.

Alot of K-english media and K-media were reporting negative reports on Heirs and downplaying at all costs and targetted with anti-media rather then praise forget about mediaplay.

On the other hand these who liked the show don't come around here no more example Minoz are the new jewish of the K-world they don't come around this place or anywhere there is K-english media due to the anti-targets of there bias and seems like everybody is out to get there bias in harsh ways so they don't cross from FB and Twitter mainly because it's to hostile area for them and somewhat chased off the K-world while several banned on NB and kkuljaem and also I don't see Shin Hye fans coming around here either they also hang out in fanclubs on FB or twitter they don't cross to this areas no more and mostly these fans who supported that tv-show were Casual teenage fans who meet alot of hostility everywhere and kinda sad tho how it turned out but it is what it is

I tend to agree with the ''small community'' analogy and tbh I think LMH has been a victim to his exploding stardom for quite some time now and I don't think this relatively small community was ever ready for him and perhaps came on the wrong time or maybe they won't change there conservatism who knows but him getting to big obviously bothered people in the Industry, Media and all sorts of influential ppl but in the process he succeeded to shed light upon that corner of the world but still the community can't grow with that conservatism behaviours

Beautiful day out today.

K dramas: I have more that I have stopped watching than I am watching.

Glamorous Temptation: The end is near on this wild ride. Eun Soo's hubby is back from the dead, but she might be running him over to save HW.

C dramas: Same, stopped watching more than I am watching.

Go Princess Go : Need to finish.

J dramas:

Gisou no Fuufu: 1/2 way through. I love Yuki Amami.

I watched her in Black Angel Vol. 2 . She plays a hit-woman who has to oppose her one time savior, the body guard of the man she's hired to kill.

Film-noir, violence, sex, revenge, double cross, yakuza gang wars. What is not to like?

Also watching Kozoku no Katachi

Waiting for some other K dramas, the current crop either hasn't hooked me or isn't being subbed.

I watched Lord Of The Flies again. Still a spooky movie even though I've seen it some many times.

Finally, check out this 25 minute film showing the construction of a wood house. The builder used hand tools as much as possible. He has a lengthy written description of the materials and methods used in the construction. I'm not doing it justice though.

Not only did he come back, but the man that Eun Soo knew him as her husband was all a phoney identity, a fake.

The hubby is another person used as a tool by the bad guy newspaper owner. The bad guy groomed hubby with the intent of grabbing a hold of Eun Soo to use her in bringing down the Prime Minister.

Hubby and HW are fighting and Eun Soo is in a car headed right towards them like she's going to run him down.

Tune in next week.

Hi fellow Beanies!

I just resumed my drama binge-watching to kinda make up for the lost weeks. Honestly I only watch Wed-Thu dramas nowadays. It seems I may be interested to check out new JTBC drama Ms.Temper & Nam Jung Ki or maybe Monster, but I'm not sure, it's freaking 50 eps!

DOTS: Dropped it at ep 5, I will resume it this weekend just to see how it all turned out. One major issue I have with this drama is actually NOT romance, but more about the peacekeeping and soldiers thing. But yeah I guess realism is not KES' forte and we should be grateful we have pretty good drama (for entertainment).

CBM: My new crack!! Just started this week and I already watched all 8 eps.. Slow claps for Oh Yeon Seo and Honey Lee. Rain and Lee Min Jung I guess are serviceable. I'm in love with Hong Nan/Ki Tak character. I just don't know OYS can be that good and she seems have fun with the drama. I just love how this drama also blend comedy with romance, bromance, melodrama, chaebol drama and everything in between.

GMB: Only watched ep 1 so far... Well not much I can say. Haven't seen enough LJW and MCW together to judge their chemistry. Kim Kang Woo, I can understand why he would become evil eventually. Unfortunate guy and even more unfortunate situation.

Does captain just become a trend in Korea? I guess if GMB and DOTS premiere at the same time, GMB won't lose much and we will have The Battle of Captains. LOL

not so much on dramas, currently enjoying Come Back Ahjusshi the most.

also watching DOTS ( still feeling neutral, not on addiction level), Goodbye Mr Black ( in the process to get the feels), and daily drama, The Promise ( I am sucker for revenge drama).

Good news ( might not be so so good) : my princess Kim So Eun will be back with webdrama (againnnnnn and againnnnn). but this time with a cutie pie Lee Won Geun ( Sassy Go Go). Anyway I approved this pairing ? because they are so cuteeee.

But hopefully her new agency create something better for her future. I really hope so ? I need to see her in adult & mature role.

Well, last night Viki suddenly listed Pied Piper along with Memory so I expect to play late-licensed drama catch up with the former as they got the first four eps at once (though subtitling catchup will take a few days likely). I'm unsure about the latter - I'm certain it will be an excellent show but it might be too heavy for me right now. I am more in the mood for some more zany cheerfulness and since I plan to also watch the heck out of Daredevil S2 this weekend I may just have to wait on that. Mrs Temper and... sounds like it might be zany fun I'm just not sure if I'll be able to check it out this week.

I still think Come Back Ahjusshi has weak writing and Rain's character is more annoying than sympathetic because he's such a manchild idiot, but I'm still entertained by the show. DOTS is still gluing me to the screen but don't you feel like this has the feel of a US network show? That may be why some people are turned off by it.

I feel that rain's characther is stupid, what exactly he wants? He wants every thing became happy and he is there but he forget that he died. He do no good and his death is because of himself, I don't get his purpose of lingering around his old life other than his wife obsession. The script is all over the place and he keeps whining up to ep 8,

DoTS may have those US vibe you said. Maybe that's why I find it good but not in kdrama trend. It feels diff than kdrama but I thoroughly enjoy it .I think it has the relief/relax feeling after watching when kdrama tends to have this addicted feeling or sometimes frustrating addicting feeling.

DOTS has really amazed me tbh, for a drama that has no solid love triangle trope which is the main tool writers use to pull in viewers ratings it has done exceptionally well, first time i've witnessed a k drama without a solid love triangle getting superhit ratings, I don't know why but this drama makes me feel so good, I don't have to swear at clingy second leads and can watch the leads love story in peace. Now that's what I want from a k drama, really getting tired of two guys fighting over a girl stories.

This website' always low-key on Taiwanese drama, but new drama Refresh Man with Aaron Yan!! <3 <3 The acting's solid with 2 good main leads and I thought they wouldn't go well together but they hold promise from the childhood scenes!

It's been a long time since his last disappointment Fall In Love With Me, lol. Hopefully this one'll go better!

One thing I love about GOOD Taiwanese romance dramas is that most episodes are peppered with tons of cute and rewatchable interactions between the 2 main leads, but still contain serious aspects that hold weight(in this case, the main female lead's irresponsibility and feeling that she's not a good secretary). Pleasantly Surprised, in my opinion, was one of them. There've been some wacky dramas these past years but hopefully the spark that makes Taiwanese dramas so awesome comes back.

BTW Aaron's puppy eyes from their school days. Best Ever. So glad they're utilizing that effectively, because I always thought it was underused in Just You. Tbh the "come back as a CEO" is sooooo overused, so it'd be nice to see more of that soft vulnerability he showed from being at the bottom peeking through at times. He's cuter when he's passive.

I do gotta say though, most Taiwanese dramas follow a very similar pattern of "the Office". Why the heck are they always in offices? Are they low on budget? In the case of Refresh Man it works fine, but still. They could do well to change the setting once in a while.

Autumn's Concerto is what got me hooked on Asian dramas. Loved the cast; think Xiao Xiao Bin is best child actor I have ever seen. Wonderful story...life was put on hold in my house to watch it.

0

I agree, most Taiwanese dramas are overacted. Still, here's some:

1. Autumn's Concerto-This one is a much watch. this beats a lot of korean dramas too, I'd say.

2. Fated to love you-this one's 2nd most popular. There's also a korean version that got popular too, but I've always like the original Taiwanese one more.

3. Sunny Happiness-Stars Mike He, and is a more serious drama. I thought they played consequences very well in this one (most Taiwanese dramas have ridiculous situations that we'd never even buy, but the events in this seem plausible)

4. In time with you-there's also a korean version starring Ha Ji won(i hear it didn't do so well) and although there are some chinks in armor this one's still got an ok story.

In my opinion those are the more serious ones. The less serious ones, but just as fun ones, include

1. Pleasantly surprised(also known as Love Myself or You) This stars Puff Guo and Jasper Liu(she's got this queenliness with a cute air, he just oozes cuteness). This involves food, and their interactions are just sooooooo cutee.

2. Just You-this stars Aaron Yan and Puff Guo, and is the classic "cold CEO meets cutsey and naive girl" but their interactions are still cute, even if the plotline's overly simplified and hard to buy.

3. Devil Beside You-stars Mike He and Rainie Young and I really liked this one, though others may say differently. I was appreciative that despite so many events that happen to break them apart, the conflict was almost always between their emotions and themselves and not, say, some evil stepmother breaking them apart. This was based off a Japanese manga.

3. Skip Beat-this actually stars a korean actor as the main lead, Choi Siwon, but it's a good drama about showbiz. It's based off japanese manga tho. It's good, but I watched this after watching the japanese anime, so I've got nothing much else to say.

4. Smiling Pasta-Girl's family owns a pasta shop, boy plays music. It's got a different feel than most dramas, which is why I'm mentioning it. I personally liked it, fine acting by both.

5. love keeps going-stars mike he and cindi, and their interaction is just charming and sweet. I haven't finished it yet, which is why I'm not placing it high up in case it's got a bad ending but from ratings and the looks of it, it's not destructive. I'd really recommend this one.

4. Romantic Princess-I admit I havent watched all the episodes(in fact, i've only watched the first few) but I've heard lots of complements about it so if you wanna give it a try....

5. Marry me, or not?-this one's recent, and although girl and boy both overact at times, story's fresher than most chinese dramas. I haven't finished it tho. With this one...i feel like Chinese dramas are trying to make their dramas sexy these days, and it might come off as...weird?

There are loads more, and not all of them are bad either, but what ends up happening is that most of them follow...

I'm really very sleepy (as a result of eating too much and feeling like one of those goat-digesting pythons) but I'm just coming in to say, I'm slooowly making my way through East of Eden and rather enjoying its old-school, super-soapy feel.

Goodbye Mr Black sounds interesting and has a great cast but post-stinky fromage drama, I don't think I want to watch any more currently airing 16+episode dramas so it's basically scared me off everything. But it is unfair that Moon Chae-won looks gorgeous and elfin even with that haircut.

also not really into this recent-ish trend of OT being the place for certain people to give vent to their persecution complex about Big Bad Dramabeans Community and why we don't like dramas that Korea does (which is completely false, because db commenters at large have LOVED or at least appreciated YFAS, Misaeng, and more recently Signal, Six Flying Dragons, pre-wtfery Cheese in the Trap, DotS - all of which were hugely popular in Korea).

Moon Chae-won is so beautiful. She has really pulled off this new haircut. I still think she looks best in sageuk (have you seen The Princess's Man? Like, Kdrama has made me immune to beauty for the most part--I mean, when everyone is that good-looking lol...but she literally awed me with her beauty in there).

I've always wondered, is East of Eden a period drama? This seems like a lazy question, but honestly all the descriptions don't really get into that. I know everyone likes to compare it to Giant which has me thinking it is...but you never know lol.

Yep, agreed, about your last point. idk, I don't even see what the big deal is re: differences in taste between western and Korean audiences. We're coming at these things from very different perspectives on and expectations of what TV is and can be--it stands to reason that there will be disagreement in taste between the two fan communities (and as you said, there's significant overlap). And the Korean audience has control over a drama's material success, anyway, so I don't get the attitude that we owe popular dramas something over here, either. I also don't think we need purity tests as fans--I'll just continue to like what I like, and dislike what I dislike. This isn't high school.

@juniper - "Kdrama has made me immune to beauty for the most part–I mean, when everyone is that good-looking "

I haven't thought about it this way, but now that you've written it out loud, I realize I feel the same way... I rarely think any actresses looks really beautiful anymore, cos there are so many good-looking ones (either natural or post-surgery). I am only ever impressed with the actors, but then even that is slightly diminished.

But in "Answer Me 1998," which I'm currently almost done with (barring the final episode), I'm impressed that there are so many normal looking people in it... And I'm doubly impressed with how pretty I find Hyeri, who plays Daek-sun...she just grew and grew on me. Underneath her long bangs, she's really a looker! So cute.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, when I first started watching sageuk I noticed how beautiful everyone was all over again because the costumes had me looking everyone over, but now that I'm so used to them I don't even blink anymore lol. Every once in a while I'll be awestruck, but it takes a lot....like all the men in Chuno for example (lol yes, I can be shallow).

I'm weird because I mostly have crushes on older actors (so people like Choi Min-soo, Yoo Dong-geun, etc lol)--I'm not really too into flower boys as much, because they're just too perfect-looking. They have to have spark of life beyond appearances for me to take interest, like some depth to their performances? idk. I am a big fan of Song Joong-ki, for example, and Yeo Jin-gu is getting there (when he hits his twenties I won't feel like such a perv for looking lol).

Yeah, Hye-ri was quite cute in AM88 imo, especially after the time jump. The series has had a lot of success in finding more interesting faces, I agree--Ryu Joon-yeol and Ahn Jae-hong, Jung Woo (I've crushed on him hard since AM 94 lol), Kim Sung-kyun, Jung Eun-ji, Lee Si-eon...or just taking beautiful people like Go Ara and making them seem more ordinary without going over the top. It definitely helps AM to feel more realistic and grounded than the typical trendy.

Sageuk clothing looks especially squeaky-clean to me... How can it be that folk in those days could have clothing with nary a crease or wrinkle? They rarely ever soil their clothes either!

As for modern day clothes...I liked how, in the "Answer Me" series and "Valid Love," for instance, the clothes worn don't seem all that brand-spanking new, but...even in "Valid Love," the female lead sported way too many winter coats.

I get your point on flower boys, cos like you I'm not really into them. I find many are way too thin for my taste, sport super-groomed eyebrows, and are generally too well-dressed. I'm not so familiar with the names of older actors, but I can totally see why you'd have crushes on some of them.

0

Yeah, AM is better about costuming than most modern dramas. What I hate the most is when I feel like a drama is trying to characterize people through their wardrobe and it goes waaaay overboard and I'm like, what human being would roll out of bed every morning and wear this stuff??? And yeah, characters never wear outfits more than once in so many dramas, which combined with the fact that everyone has a brand new smart phone is just mind-boggling when you consider some of these girls are supposed to be quite poor.

Yeah, beauty standards in Korea have really shifted--the older men I'm talking about were a lot more rugged and imperfect looking.

I fell in love with MCW after watching her in Princess Man. She was fantastic there. Then in Nice Guy. But I could not finish Good Doctor (not really sure why)..

Yeah, I got made fun of a bit when I said this last time, but I still wish Goodbye Mr. Black could have been Goodbye Ms. Black lol. She is too good to be playing second fiddle to male leads! I agree, I want to see her in another sageuk (as long as it's a real one like TPM lol).

Hong Soo-hyun was FANTASTIC as Princess Kyung-hye, seriously one of the best performances I've ever seen in a kdrama.

I love that her character was allowed to be so layered and complex and occasionally do unlikable things and still never slipped into the classic 'bitchy second lead' trap. The writing and acting on that one were A+++.

0

Yeah, I ended up taking Kyung-hye's side over Se-ryung whenever they argued, because the stakes were so real. Honestly that was one of the most satisfying sageuk for me in terms of female characters. So many sageuk take the easy way out and dress girls as men, or flat-out ignore the realities for women in Joseon, but here the writers clearly understood the conditions of possibility for women at the time, and found ways for those two to work within them to resist Sooyoung and/or stand up for their principles. Knowing this was probably how women had to operate (I mean give or take a few dramatic flourishes lol), their struggle really touched me.

0

late but yes, I have seen The Princess' Man! She was so beautiful there, she has such doll-like facial features and the sageuk hairstyles and clothing suit her perfectly. She was also gorgeous in War of the Arrows, where she was in dirtied-up sageuk clothing and very little makeup but she still took my breath away. It was a great movie too, one of my all-time favourites in any language.

East of Eden isn't a period drama though it does start out 2+decades ago, most of the action is set in the present.

And honestly, after a closer look I realised that the complaints about db are not about us not liking dramas Korea likes (which, as you said, is false and we don't owe it to anyone to like their drama), it's about us not liking ONE certain drama, whose name starts with an H and rhymes with 'pairs'. Because apparently the success of other dramas is all the result of false reports and media manipulation, despite the Nielsen ratings stats and the reports from even American media about how a Korean actress was causing a certain lipstick shade to sell out worldwide.

Oh, THAT drama again. But I mean come on, that was one of the best dramas of all time, Pogo, and in the immortal words of Adore Delano, some people aren't liking it.

...I mean, really, though? Out of all the dramas out there, this is what people fixate on? I just find it odd that people need others to like what they like to feel validated. Most people dismiss my favorite genre out of hand, and probably wouldn't touch my favorite dramas, but I don't understand why I would get mad about it. It's not like we're all professional critics or something--we're just laymen with opinions we feel like sharing. We don't owe anything to anyone.

Hi I just made it back home

I have an incredible story for you.

you know how all of Europe is all nerves about the refugees? Well, the older generation can be pretty politically incorrect about it, and you cannot really say they have mean intentions, it is just that old habits die hard. I have seen words in stories from 1945 that contain vocabulary that could get you fined today. I bet it would not be easy to change our own ways when we are 68...

well, I had a tour on the WWII refugees, there were 5 people this time on one tour and 4 on the other. Not many, but that was ok. as long as there are people who come because they are truly interested. and one group was joined by a city tour guide who wants to get a licence for our museum and they have been promised they can use my tours to get one mark. He was korean! Jung Gon Kim. He speaks fluent estonian and has been a guide since 2002.
I had everyone introduce themselves and the last was mr Kim. he just said his name. at that, one of my seniors leaned forward and said: "Well now, you are making a tour on refugees, but look, one of them has managed to sneak in here as well!" I dont know if she meant this as a joke, Mr. Kim laughed and said very quietly taht he has been a guide in Estonia for a very long time. As if she did not hear him at all, the senior sticked her nose into his face and asked mockingly: "Well, narrow eyes, do you know any estonian yet?" OH. MY GOSH. Mr. Kim smiled again and said happily that he does, but I was rather speechless and lost at words at the sheer ignorance and rigidness of our seniors.

but in the end, we had a very nice tour and everyone became friends. Rough start to smooth sailing, I guess...

that´s all I have to share today, good night, I am rather tired.

Good for Mr. Kim for not saying anything rude back to her. I guess there's a reason Koreans are reknowned for their good manners. His behavior sounds exemplary. All I need to do is watch a little of American politicians right now to be reminded of how many people have forgotten the importance of good manners.

I don´t really judge them, cause when they were young, it was normal to speak like that. when you live so far from anything, you dont think about political correctness. in some ways, their behavior is stuck in their youth so it would be really hard to change. and I am not the one to go tell a senior to behave. I can´t do that. It is best if, perhaps, another senior quietly mentions to them they should mind their expression.

It's not just about "political correctness" though, is it? - that's about using terms like "Yellow people" or "Ang-moh" (white ghosts) without thinking about it, and most of it is said behind people's backs.

To say things like "oh you must be an immigrant" to someone's face is prejudice, imagine telling any German person - hey you must be a fascist! Or for anyone to say to you, oh you must be a poor communist East European! And to call someone "narrow eyes" is just plain rude. Imagine if you met someone for the first time and called them, "Hey fatty."

I just heard a story from a friend who's head of a arts school in Asia. He's white and he has a child about 9 years old. He told a story that not only will he teach his child to be polite and good-mannered, he will also teach him by modelling how to resist racism by calling out someone for being a racist or prejudiced dick.

It may not need to be done in the moment, or not in a professional public environment, but those things cannot be let to slide for a more antiquated notion that we cannot correct our elders. The only way the world can get better in any way, is about the new generation correcting previous generation's mistakes.

Hi.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't like Descendants of the Sun. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the first four episodes (started to watch because my friend said she liked it), but as soon as I watched episode five and six I realized that 1) The drama is sixteen episodes long and we still don't have a proper story; 2) Secondary lead couple is way more secondary than they should.

I started to watch it because I tend to like Kim Ji Won projects, I liked Gap Dong (fell on love with Lee Joon's acting) and I was loving her on-screen dynamic with Jin Goo, even though he is way older than her, because their age difference doesn't show that much.

Unfortunately I had to drop it. It's the third drama I dropped this year, the others were Cheese in the Trap and Signal. I would like to let clear that this one was the hardest for me to drop, because it is really good, actually. The problem is that I'm not in the mood for something so heavy. There were also a few thing I disliked.

Since 2015, I dropped 10+ dramas and I wonder if I'm always the problem, but something says to me that I'm not, since I know other people who complain about story quality and other technical aspects of dramas.

I hope I find something good to watch. Something I really like. I'm thinking about starting Memory as soon as the subtitles are out. I loved Lee Sung Min's acting in Misaeng (aka the best drama of all time).

For last, I would like to say that I feel incredibly uncomfortable with the fact I don't like love stories. As a girl, I find it weird sometimes. I feel like I should like rom-coms, but I can't. The only exception is The Master's Sun which I liked more because of general acting (awesome cast!) than the romance itself. I dropped several romance dramas that I started only for the sake of watching, like just because everyone else was watching. All of my favorite dramas have no or little romance (some of my favorite dramas are Misaeng, Bridal Mask, White Christmas, Gap Dong and Bad Guys). I tend to like mystery, psychological, slice-of-life dramas.

Psh. Don't feel bad because you don't like love stories! To each their own, I say, and let them love it--well, unless you end up doing some totally sketchy juju and loving that. Then I advise caution.

I won't say I don't love a well crafted romance myself--that would be a blatant lie--but I have plenty of friends who don't like them. For myself, I live in an area that loves Hunger Games, Divergent and Harry Potter--none of which I love. Thank goodness not all dramas are rom-coms! Also, you've only dropped 10ish since last year? Kudos for following through on so many, then!

Do not find yourself weird dear. Being a girl does not mean you will love romance stories too.

I personally prefer mystery / thriller stories but at times I will go back to romance stories in order to balance it?

As for DOTS, I don't know if it is a heavy or not. I dont think it is heavy drama and if you see thread for DOTS it is mostly about SJK & the romance.

Memory is pretty heavy. In the long line of lawyers dying or losing their memory this feels like the saddest.

Whenever i am in need of laughs, i come to dramabeans. I love you beanies. The level of humor in the comments of recaps or newbites etc just makes my day.

Okay now,

DOTS: honestly am i the only one that loves the romance between the second leads than the first, and also the bromance. SJK is a good actor but SHK makes it hard to like her acting, no joke. This is her second drama i am watching since full house, no changes.

SFD: waiting for it to finish so i can marathon and get my Yoo ah in fix.

Withdrawals, withdrawals......SINGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU?

Goodbye Mr Black, first epi didn't hold my attention, dropped.

Five Children: pure pure pure fun.

Happy home: pure fun

That's how it is: another pure fun. Just for laughs watch these dramas.

CBA: Dropped. I love you Rain, but i just can't watch this.

Jang Young Sil: i love anything history and plus anything Il Gook.

Il Gook, Seo In Guk, Ha Ji Won, Gong Hyo Jin, Kim Sun Ah, Yoo Ah In, Kim Ha Neul are like brand names in kworld. As long as their name appears on a movie or drama, i will find out and try to watch it. They have not disappointed me so far. I nearly dropped Seo In Guk remember you, but i moved after the first epi and it was good.

Who are your KBrands?

I started making my list of Kbrands when I realized that although I love these actors/actresses, I've mostly only loved them in one or two dramas only, not all.

For what it's worth, though, here's my list:

Yoo Ah In, Seo In Guk, (recently) Park Bo-Geum, Lee Yong Ae, Kim Hee Ae, Lee Jin Wook, Gong Hyo Jin, Song Hye-Go, Jeon Do-Yeon, Son Yeh Jin.

Who are your KBrands?

For me it's Gong Hyo-jin, Jung Eun-ji, Ahn Pan-seok (director), Moon Chae-won, Lee Jun-ki, Park Hae-ryun (writer), Park Ji-eun (writer), Won Bin (if only he would come out of hibernation!), Song Joong-ki, Yoon Doo-joon, and Kim Seul-gi.

and of course, in actual franchises I will always check out each Answer Me instalment, it's a pretty solid 'brand' even with its faults.

oh and I forgot - Kang Dong-won, Ha Jung-woo and Jeon Ji-hyun! those are generally reliable 'brands' if you are a movie watcher :)

Happy Friday y'all!
I'm a bit behind on my dramas, cause I spent this week watching the 2015 infinity challenge music festival. I don't really follow that show but I love the music festival episodes. I love watching the interactions between the cast members and the musicians as they create.
There isn't any particular k-drama I'm excited about these days unfortunately. I watched the first 4 episodes of signal and decided to drop it for now. The show was a little heavy for me and honestly those 4 epiosed felt like a complete mini drama so I kinda have closure lol.
I'm currently enjoying kazoku no katachi. That show has so much heart.
I'm still looking for English subs for yof Iceland but still no luck. Would gravely appreciate any leads.
Have a great weekend!

Must be the seasonal change in the air with so many people falling ill. I was feeling quite run down for a few days, and one morning, just kept busy but wasn't actually talking to anyone. Then I got on Skype to have a meeting with someone I was "meeting" for the first time - only to be entirely embarrassed when I opened my mouth and this weird hoarse squeak came out. My voice was totally gone and the poor guy was happy to keep going for a bit till I realised it just was too painful both for him and me.

So I've been "put to bed" by my partner who's been a sweetie and feeding me hot lemon and honey, but slightly counteracting it by serving me food with chilli too, which I normally love but probably isn't helping with recovery. Anyway with this long preamble - I've had a chance to catch up with drama-watching.

Six Flying Dragons - I'm just holding onto my seat as we're careening at top speed for the last episodes. It's as if we've been on a roller coaster and we've just tipped over onto the last few rounds. Fantastic production and performances. Poor little Bang Seok, he would have been happy enough not to be king, I think. I blame LGS.

Signal - amazing show. Can't wait for Season 2 if they're really going for it. It resurrected some faith after the debacle of Cheese. I think I've developed an appreciation for the ahjussis of Korean drama - they're like super fine wine, full-bodied, rich and mature. Pretty boys are par of the course, of course - like a nice looking dessert confection, but a good deep red can take you into the good night.

So, Cho Jin Woong joins for me, the ranks of Lee Sung Min, Kim Sang Joong, Pak Won Sang. And I'm also gonna add the more mature actors like Ji Sung, Yoon Kye Sang and Yoon Sang-Hyun.

I am watching Descendants of the Sun. I have such split responses to it - on one hand, I think they've produced the show well, and SJK is really nailing the role. So in terms of manipulation - yes, they're hitting the marks and getting the responses. But the part of my brain that won't turn off also recognises that beneath the slick cinematography and editing - there are cracks in terms of meaning and plot development. There are a lot of scenes, character developments that are just re-hashed from so many other shows - scenarios from ER or Grey's Anatomy, and a scene of baddies like every other action film such as Con Air etc. It's a cobble, albeit a clever one - and meanwhile, there are so many pretty things to look like, if one doesn't look too deeply. So the question becomes - should one not look too deeply? And I think I do - I'm still awaiting the grand narrative to show up - and I think it will come with all bells ringing about country, nation, patriotism, self-sacrifice and heroism. And to be honest, all those epic-type concepts are constructs that are hugely manipulative.

On another note - I finally finished The Disguiser. Such a fantastic production. I still prefer Nirvana on Fire,...

On another note - I finally finished The Disguiser. Such a fantastic production. I still prefer Nirvana on Fire, but it's the same A-team in production and actors. In The Disguiser - similar themes of nation, identity, sacrifice all come into play. But at least the show doesn't shy from facing up to the fact that all these ideas are complex, and those who are involved in politics have dirty hands too.

Lastly, I'm casually following Refresh Man. I'm just fascinated at how big Aaron Yan has become - seems like his shoulders are twice the width they were..

I'm in drama slump after the show who shall notbe mentioned. So I try watching Signal, and just finished it. I have mixed feeling on the show. the opinion totally my own.

Jo Jin-Woong (and his character) are awesome and the story mostly interesting.

But I find myself dozed off in the middle of many episodes and skip many scenes. I have no patience in the sloow motion scenes (like walkkkks, or stareees, or shockeeed) and many many replays.

I find the detectives (esp. in 2015) less compelling. I'm not fan of Lee Je-hoon and Kim Hye-soo character. While I can buy LJH as a dongsaeng wanting revenge, him as a smart profiler not so much. So do with KHS, convincing as bright eyed JJW fangirl, not as team leader badass detective. Their character, especially KHS's often used as plot device, behaving out of character as the story fits.

So overall, good show, but not great for me.
