happy weekend everyone
I finally resumed Nirvana in fire up to episode 34, it feels great and I want to hug Prince Jingyan so bad, he looks so lonely even though we knew he has lots of nice people that trust him completely and work for him based on loyalty. I never really support a prince aside of 4th prince in BBJX and Yuwen Yong in Lan Ling Wang but I really want Prince Jing to success, not because he is the best option of all but because I believe he is the right man. He is so kindhearted that I am afraid that he would die suddenly. It also sadden me that I never seen his wife, I want to volunteer just to make his bed, come on, the dude looks so lonely.
All game of thrones in Asian Drama is really a bloody smile, they don't used bad words directly but all implied to be the right guy while murder people in their own garden. I watched Game of Thrones and it's more direct about the cruelness is on how they killed everybody while in Asian Drama, it wasn't really about being dead but disappearance, somehow people just vanish and dead based on rumor. It scared me that servants can easily dead just for . . . reason. How they can make people consent to suicide because of duty, it just too cruel.

Madam Antoine It's actually really cute and well played to make us giggle in happiness. I just can't find the logic between a world renowned psychotherapist and guy that don't know how to communicate with people. He pissed off everyone. I understand if he is originally an introvert or cold person but he learns psychology! at least he understand how people want to be treated, It's contradicted for me, even if someone doesn't believe in love or feel love is an illusion, it can't justified how they don't treat people nicely. It somehow different than bad boss or evil senior, he just doesn't want to treat people nicely an on top of that he is a psychotherapist.

I also finished Ja Myung Go because my thirst for Jung Kyung Ho and it's really a slow burn. They spend too much about the adult and it only pick up on episode 20+ when Prince Hodong and Princess Ja Myung became adult. After finished it, I feel that Princess Ja Myung is kinda unreasonable to side with her father and yearn for his country when she never care about that place before, she doesn't even care in politic before, her sister hate her, she just want to knew his father and Prince Hodong already give his complete trust in her, also she believe too much in dreams.

I finally watch Go Princess Go too and I never laugh that hard before, it's really funny, it always make me sigh when imagined how much better this drama if they had a decent budget since it just completely enjoyable series. It's not a grand story but it's enough to make your inner fangirl mode switch to on care so much to this fake princess.

Kaito Yamaneko , Love it, kamenashi, hiroki narimiya and nanao in one drama, I love their character!

King of Mask singer is a bit slow, but I pick my faith in the beggar cause he seems so good. It also nice that Kangin Super Junior get some recognition, his part and the beggar is really funny and enjoyable.
anyway I really want to watch historical Chinese drama, I prefer in the dynasty period, not so modern era, can someone give a recommendation? thanks before

Maybe you can google for good historical C-drama. I liked NIF the best, but BBXN and The Legend of Zhen Huan were good too. The sound of desert was kind of ok, and Female prime minister was somewhat boring.

Yes King of Mask Singer is bit slow. Too bad all top singers with distinctive voices are hard to participate in the show (because it is not fun if panel finds out right away).

Kaito Yamaneko is so absurd, but then it throws in some really deep and meaningful conversation in the middle of acting a total goof, and that makes it such a curious thing. and this is how I like Kamenashi the best! He should always be a little wacky, energetic, passionate, yet careless.

In last week’s OT, there was discussion about Yoo Ah-In. I last saw him in He Who Can’t Marry as a stingy bespectacled guy, he was not at all impressive. Well, his recent performance must be quite decent to have deserved the attention and compliments. So I selected his Secret Love Affair to watch, as I much prefer seeing him play piano than anything else he might be doing in a sageuk.

The love between Lee Sun-Jae (YAI) and Oh Hye-Won (Kim Hee-ae) is so heartbreakingly tragic and intense. The probability of a 20 year old boy falling for a 40 something ajumma is almost zero, it was more a crafted fantasy of middle-aged woman by novelist Kaori Ekuni, made more plausible than the original movie Tokyo Tower, through firstly, a mutual empathy and admiration arising out of the euphoria of music appreciation, and secondly, with an ahjumma as attractive and graceful as Kim Hee-ae. The affair seemed forgivable and even acceptable from Hye-Won’s perspective, having to babysit a self-serving and immature husband all along, when out of a sudden, someone treated her with delicate care and affection.

YAI’s portrayal of Sun-Jae’s total devotion in loving Hye-Won so earnestly gave me a sharp pang in the heart seeing him cried desperately and struggling so hard to make sense her deceitful world of shady dealings, fraud, corruption and bribery. Probably this has more to do with protective maternal instinct, he looked so young and helpless, his big ears made him look like a cute little brownie.

Ah yes, it is worth mentioning, when he played Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, it was omg daebak! I scored him 8 out of 10 for his piano etiquette (Jo Won a 7/10 and Lang Lang a 6/10 – in order not to incite the wrath of classical music fans, ok, he is a great pianist but his dragon ball hairstyle and facial expression are a tad too exaggerating).

I’m also currently watching Misaeng with last two episodes left. I loved this drama as it very realistically portrayed the real corporate world, unlike those chaebol owned mock companies in the rom-com. The camaraderie and competition among colleagues, turf wars, intimidating and manipulative bosses, and the struggle to garner performance results are all very real.

Would just like to point out that:

-A boss like Oh Young Sik(Lee Sung-min) who cares so much as to go all out to be protective of a subordinate who is a temp staff is either non-existence or is extinct

- Seems too male dominated, with female employees being grossly out-numbered. It must be tough being Ahn Young-Yi (Kang So-ra), blatantly discriminated and mis-treated. I was a globe-trotting corporate “slave” years earlier, and while being sent on trips to the Seoul office, I was coerced into drinking soju by Ajusshis, I also felt uncomfortable about having to act condescending in order to gain acceptance.

-The rigidly structured rookie system though protected the mid-level executives from arrogant and eager to perform newbies, but asking rookies to make coffee and wipe desks all day long is too absurd!

Of course, the sincere and prudent baduk playing Jang Geu-rae (Yim Si-wan) is a bonus to watch. I wonder why his nerdy demeanour is so similar to Taekkie, even the baduk club looked the same and the baduk senior at the club looked like the same person!

“Secret Love Affair” (Series Review) by Odessa Jones
http://www.koreandrama.today/review/secret-love-affair-series-review/

Though many K-dramas remind me of Charles Dickens novels, this one’s closer to something by Tolstoy or Edith Wharton. There’s an underlying darkness to things, the feeling that the world values money and status too much to allow us to be fully human.

Yoo Ah-In brings a heart-breaking innocence to this role. If the ancient Greek pantheon included a Demigod of Sincerity, he would look like Yoo Ah-In playing Lee Seon-Jae.

Misaeng is one of the dramas I wanted to watch, and did read the recaps, but then never got myself to actually watch. A lot of it being because of one of my friends being in very similar position as that shown in the drama. It all got a bit to real (although that's also some of the reason for the drama's success)

Hi Manin, how are you? Hope things are going well for you at work and the kiddies are behaving themselves! :)

Not sure what situation your friend is in, but I think in the drama Jang Geu-rae's predicament is the most sympathetic and distressing. It is really not easy being a contract staff, especially when one gets so attached to the work team and environment, invested a lot of earnest efforts into the work, but still, the job is on the line, with no guarantee of secure long-term employment whatsoever.

Pebble:

I'm good, how are you? The kids are mostly behaving, as is the way of kids ;) But they are really my motivation for doing m job. I mean, what better way to start your day than having a small child run to wards you with a BIG smile to give you hugs? Safe to say, the kdrama toddler stories are back ;)

Yeah, he's told me stories from his work place and it really makes you question to what extent dramas are indeed exaggerating. Cause a lot of what he goes through sounds like it belongs to one.

0

It's nice to talk to you again! Yeah, in the drama, there is also Han Seok-yool (Byun Yo-han) who had to wrestle with a manipulative boss who off-loaded all work responsibilities onto him, taking all the credits when things turned out well, and putting the entire blame on him when things went wrong.... Politics aside, the feeling of always being kept on your toes, and having to work long ungodly hours are undesirable aspects of corporate life which can't be avoided. Comparatively, you are lucky to be the envy of many, with a job you tremendously enjoy and being surrounded by those cute and innocent little children with their funny and amusing behaviour :)

@Pebble & Manin

Just chiming in as I finished Misaeng very recently too (just over two weeks ago) and it is fantastic! The writing is so good, such strong performances that make realistic characters and managed to make the most boring set up of the office (and the company sells really "boring" stuff) suddenly to exciting and full of life.

Required fields are marked *

Hi owl, how are you? YAI is too "down to earth boy-next door" and can be overlooked and fell out of the radar screen if he happens to be in a supporting role. I wrote him off after watching HWCM, if not for SLA, I would have missed out on the acting of another great actor. I intend to watch The Throne next after it is subbed. The Korean community in my city brought this movie in for a special one-day screening in one of the theatres a few months ago, it must be very awesome! As for SFD, I am not sure if I can sit through it as long sageuk can give me cold feet.

btw, I finished watching Pasta, I would have enjoyed it more if not for the loud voiced Hyun-wook, his harsh reprimands can be so irritating at times! But I discovered Alex Chu, and fell in love with his nasal voice. I found this video clip of Sung Si-kyung and Alex Chu singing Ebony & Ivory, this is jinjia wanjeon deabak!! Though his voice sounded soft and mellow in contrast to SSK's bright and crystal clear voice, it is well suited for smooth slow jazzy songs.

SLA stays within my three favorite dramas. You described the story very well but let's not forget about HyeWon's need of true affection and sentiment. She only thought about rising in the foundation and had to give up playing herself. No nutrition for her soul for years. Succeeding externally through corruption but abandoning herself. So sad but fortunate to met the integrity and love of SunJae.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

How true is that! It was a big internal struggle for Hye-Won as well having to abandon her whole belief system and her achievements. Not many women in her situation have the courage to give up everything in the name of love, no matter how passionate may still be fleeting and transient. In this case, probably Sun-Jae's earnest sincerity struck a deep but long forgotten chord in her.

One More Happy Ending is getting better. Love the pace and how everyone step up their game.

Rewatching Yoo Dain's Just an Ordinary Love Story because of OMHE. Boy, does that little drama still makes me bawling over it. There is just something about the matter-of-fact way it tells its sad story that always gets me.

Yes, Signal is definitely sad. I get the feeling our hero is setting himself up for a love triangle with detective from the past. And he might have to do the heroic thing which would result in hothead detective from the past returning to the life of the heroine...and our hero having a broken heart. Am preparing for a bittersweet ending.

Know that is out of the way hope you all had a great week even though there was no Cheese In The Trap this week.
(felt the emptiness) Still we had the sweetness of One More Happy Ending and taking a break of the craziness of Cheese was not a bad thing either..

My Favorite line of this week drama was in ep8 of OMHE when Song Soo-Hyuk said to Jung A-Ni(she is the clinging coworker) ''I am not curious about you'' even after 10 years of friendship the dude was not even once curious about her..Damm clearer than this it won't get hahha.

Best first ep:

Shin Don (Best first episode of anything I've watched ever--it goes through ilke hundreds of years of history in the space of 45 minutes, encapsulates the tragedy of Gongmin's reign on a historical level and the personal tragedy between the characters, and then goes back to the beginning and sets things up more effectively in the remaining ten minutes than most dramas are able to do in 60.)
Eyes of Dawn (it sets up and pretty much defines every characters' experiences with the war in most visceral, unforgettable and horrifying ways)
Sandglass (best childhood section ever imo)
Ruler of Your Own World (It feels like you jump into the middle of real life from the beginning)
Joseon X-Files (will never forget the UFO scene)
Flames of Ambition (those first four episodes were crucial to establishing/justifying the extreme tone the drama takes, and they more than succeeded--plus Kim Yoo-jung's performance as little Yoon Na-young is unforgettable)
The Chaser (now that is how you fridge characters if you expect me to cry)
Chuno (that action! Kdrama as it's never been before, and probably never will be again sadly)

I know we are talking about best first episode but Cruel Palace was my favorite epic "opening" ever. Leave it to Lee Deok-Hwa to do the longest walk of shame that any Korean king would've ever required to do. And...who the heck speaks Manchu in a drama? “War of the Arrows” flash back. Man that was something I'd expect from a movie opening.

omg yes, Cruel Palace had an amazing opening--I loved the way the camera flew with that bird across the night sky and then zoomed down to Lee Deok-hwa, too. And all the snow. And yeah, the way the whole world seemed to reverberate when Injo did the kowtow. The production in Cruel Palace was really great, looking back. *mild spoilers for Cruel Palace* Did Kim Ja-jeom go into exile the first episode? Because if he did, then it totally deserves to be on the list lol. I loved that whole part of the story where he was on the island, starving and snake bitten and cursing the heavens. Jung Sung-mo is so great lol.

it cracked me up. He was just so amazed that poor people had hope of any kind of power or justice.

Hi Carole,

HI Carole,

Bad guy is outrageous. I could almost hear his brain shattering into splintery shards as he stomped on his computer when he didn't get his way. Again. Isn't that happening way too much to him these days-him not getting his way? Prison is too good for him. Funny, but confidence from hope might actually overcome his confidence from money (and all that comes with it.)

Still, I can't bear to watch Ji Woo's complexion get sallower, and the glint in his eyes is gone. I almost - almost - wonder if the pursuit of justice is worth it in this story.

Hey, what do you think will be the remedy for his memory loss, anything??

I don't understand why they had to make it familial Alzheimer's. It's a rare condition, especially to occur in people before 40. Memory loss due to an emotional stress at his age would have been much better (for us, viewers) and more common.

0

I'm actually sitting here hoping and depending on bad kdrama medical knowledge.

0

Carole,
I am impressed with Nam Goong Min's acting skills, too ~
Gosh, "a kind of adopted disable brother" conjures up images of Harry in the hospital braiding straws like his mother. Nooo~ it breaks my heart. It was heartbreaking when he mixed up the current trial with his father's.

btw, I cringed at the real weapon nonchalantly tucked in Jin Woo's desk drawer in a plain paper bag and not locked up where it should be for safekeeping, really!

Interesting question. I realized as I thought about it that there are very few memorable first episodes that I've watched. They also aren't always great predictors of how good a show will ultimately be - there have been initial episodes that I liked, only to see the show go swiftly down hill (hi, Yongpal), and other cases where the first episode was messy, but things got much better from there (Return of Iljimae, Fermentation Family, Giant, Evasive Inquiry Agency, Queen Seondeok). Great initial episodes are tough because there is usually so much exposition to get out of the way, even though you'd think they'd be extra polished as they are the first thing an audience will see and there is usually more time to write, film and edit them.

Happy Friday! Survived another week -yay!
Enjoying CITT, SFD, Signal, IHL the most. Can't wait to watch Signal (Son Hyun-joo!) tonight -it's not time to go home yet?:(
It was nice of JB to cover interviews of the casts from CITT (Too bad we didn't get one for In-ha actress. I read she was not happy getting negative feedback on her acting). I am always amazed to find out how nice/intelligent actors/actresses actually are even though they play the hateful characters.

More interviews from Reply 1988- Park Bo-geum/Taek and Ryu Joon-yeol/Jung-hwan:
1. Park Bo-geum(23): "Doing Youth over flowers was my honor. I've only dreamed doing a reality variety show but that dream came true. I became close to Hyungs -An Jae-hong(Jung-bong), Go kyung-pyo(Sun-woo), Ryu Joon-yeol during the trip, which was the most memorable to me." Park said he didn't know about joining the show at all, and didn't know others were over there already. He said doing Reply 88 was his family's honor. He said Sin PD of reply 88 was very detailed and never got angry which made the filming more enjoyable. "And just seeing Na PD was incredible. I felt like I met the celebrity whom I only watch on the TV. No matter how many times I met him, I felt like I was watching TV."

About Husband hunting in R88, he said he never dreamed he was Duk-seon's husband. "Heri ssi said she knew because of media and interview, but I had no idea." He said he only knew for sure after reading the script of episode 19 and 20, and said he thought there would be twists (but there wasn't). He also said he cheered for Jung-hwan. "I thought Jung-hwan was the husband. I cheered for him as a viewer because his character was very attractive, and Joon-yeol hyung acted so well."

Park Bo-geum felt different from Taek - smile a lot, gave long answers and had wits. He said giving his all on one thing is similar. About Ryu saying he might'd gotten Taek role (from the show Taxi), "Actors were given characters fitting them. I think Sin PD gave everyone best fitting role. In audition, I didn't know which role they'd give me, because I did Sun-woo like character and Jung-hwan like (manly) character."

He said YOF members were similar to their characters in R88, which made the trip fun and made him happy."Joon-yeol hyung is smiling really pretty. Even to men's eyes, he is cool, and hyung who can learn a lot from. Gyung-pyo hyung feels like real hyung, and Jae-hong hyung is humorous. Trip was very enjoyable."
About behind the famous kiss scene in R88, he said he was shy but pretended he was not bothered. "It was first time I had a kiss scene in a show. I was very nervous, but pretended I was ok. I was very embarrassed, but I am a man after all, I should not avoid such thing." He said he thought that scene was a dream. "The scene Duk-seon touched her chest out of relief next day after the kiss was filmed later...

It was not in the script I had. So I thought Am I the husband? but I waited for a twist, which never came."
About the scene he sweared, "When I had the audition, I was told to say swear words, and I was flustered because I hardly swear. It was first time. I practiced in front of the mirror before that scene. I thought I did well, but all laughed because I sucked at it". About his cautious character, "I am also the type who give my all on only one person. Love is timing it said- I think that is right". About Heri, "She was cheerful like Duk-seon. Full of energy and spread love to many people."

About the rumor dating Jang Na-ra (after 'I remember you')!!!, he said no way. "Because of that rumor, I am reluctant to contact Nara Noona. It is the first time I had the scandal, so I thought I must be getting a lot of attention. I also felt sorry for Nara Noona."

Lee Hyun-woo(Moorim school) about Park Bo-geum: "I first met him in the classroom while waiting before starting the college. I happened to look back and there was Bo-geum. That was when the rumor he and I look alike was going around. Maybe that was the reason we got really close."

2. Ryu Joon-yeol (30): "My mother likes it(became popular from Reply 1988), but I told her 'This kind of popularity is fleeting, Please calm down and act usual'. I don't get excited maybe because I am old enough. I think popularity is short-lived, and trying to behave calmly."

About the rumor that he had a bad relationship with production team which resulted in switching Taek to be the husband (This was bad enough that his agency said they might do legal action), "I found out from someone. That is not true at all. I happily filmed, and I was fortunate to receive so much love, by meeting good PD and good show. And I am not sorry that Park Bo-geum became husband. There was hardly any talk about husband amongst actors." "R88 was centered around the family story. But it was good experience getting so much love doing Jung-hwan's character. I was so grateful."

About when he found out Taek was husband, "There is confession scene (ep 18). When I read the script, I thought 'Oh I am not husband. Now I have to send Duck-seon away from my mind. I didn't feel bad about that playful confession. If it were real Jung-hwan, I think he did it that way."

About his looks (Ma mi-ran(JH's mom) said 'There is no answer/cure once you fall for an ugly looking man'), "I think I can't change my looks even if I do something, so I don't concern about it. I rather read one more book, and show kindness (if I have time worrying about it). I think that will do me more good." Recently MBC variety show 'Infinity challenge - Introducing my ugly/homely/humble looking friend season2', He competed with Babi of group icon. He said he didn't get stressed by that. "I like that program. Regardless of the competition, seeing me on that program felt weird. I watched the season 1 too, and my...

BTW Ryu Joon-yeol is having second fan meeting in early April, because it was way too popular first time. They said all seats were booked up in 5 minutes this time too. Guess it will take a while for people to forget about R88.

Thanks so much for the translations! I loved 1988, it wasn't perfect but it was about so much more than the husband. It's lovely to know they had a good atmosphere on the set and got along so well (as all Answer Me casts do, lol)

it is not that "chase after him", more like I am so amazed that a young guy is so refined in his acting, so ... in that, he doesnt seem young at all in fact, he seems like a grandpa sometimes. his acting is just so mature. but the personality is so innocent! I am conflicted more about, you want to baby this kind of person, but because of the co-existing maturity, it would be unfair, you know?

Fan - Thank you for condensing and translating! I've read the interviews here and there, so it's nice that you were able to post the highlights. Considering there is a lot of controversy over the husband hunt, I applaud the actors on how they responded so far from what I was reading. It's great to know that they had a lot of fun shooting the drama, and are very grateful for the experience and the exposure that it brought to their careers! I'm looking forward to following all of them on their future projects.

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today.

The calendar says winter, but suddenly we have 90-degree weather! The much-forecasted (and much needed) El Nino rain is not materializing. It's a little concerning.

So it's been a week of my lovely mom showing me YouTube clips of Glamorous Temptation, because she's totally into it! Heh. ....... I know some of you here have mentioned before that the whole thing is "cray-cray." *laughing* ........ You guys are right, it is! Oh, but it's a good "cray-cray!" ....... That son-in-law! I'm not kidding, mom showed me a clip of the son-in-law cackling at his desk and going on about something as he's playing with a small cage/trap and a little plush, toy mouse!

Watched this week:

Six Flying Dragons - The Cheok Sa-kwang reveal---Very.Well.Done. ....... And the ohchik reveal to Lee Bang-won---Wow. The look on his face as he heard the words coming out of Sambong's mouth!

Remember - Uh oh, symptoms! ...... This is so not going to end well.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I guess Remember is this year's Punch. I really do want a deus exmachina to save him (says she who hates deus exmachinas.)

I want Moohyul to have a love and I'm beginning to dislike JDJ because he will take away Bang Ji's love. Yep, the romantic in me is looking for romance in any way, shape, or form.

With the limited time he has, I don't know how much saving there can be. But it's a drama, so who knows.

Regarding SFD, whoa! I'm a couple of eps behind, so I'm not where you're at, so now I'm really curious as to what's happening! That being said, I'm already kind of disliking JDJ a bit after the last couple eps I've watched.

Nothing happening in the love dept. It's weird watching a prequel that is affected by and informed by the show after it. So far, there is no sign of love between JDJ and Bang Ji's love. But that doesn't say much with this writer because love is very subtle in this drama. So he might just slip that on us. I'm kinda hoping our interpretation of "JDJ's woman/wife" in Tree with deep roots is somehow off. Maybe writer will change matters but I doubt it.

Hi korefan (attempt 2 at commenting)
Come here if you miss winter. We have snow snow and snow. Yesterday the snow was so bad we had to move all the kids sleeping outside into the trolley shed to provent them being sll covered up by the snow (it still snowed in through the walls of the shed, but at least it was more manageble).

In Norway too, it is quite common to let the kids (when they are babies) sleep outside even when it is snowing. The babies wear good, warm clothes of course.

Norsk også? :)

0

Of course! That's what we norwegians do. Actually I think all the nordic countries do, or at least it's not uncommon in the other ones. The kids wear warm clothes, lie in their trolley's in sleeping bags. They have it nice and cosy.

The kids sleep a lot better when outside too. Both getting a better quality sleep and often sleeping longer. Also studies have shown that it's much better for them as they get enough fresh air, and the cold kills more bacteria that would otherwise spread.

I should note that we have rules about how cold it can be when they sleep outside. It's not like we'd make them freeze or do it if it was dangerous.

I love the cultural stuff I learn on DB. This would be such a good bit to add to worldbuilding a story. It wouldn't be unusual to Norwegians but it'd be fascinating for readers who don't know about this culture. Love the worldview too. Makes me sit back and realize..yeah, why should kids have to sleep inside when its cold.

0

So interesting. What do you mean by "trolleys"? Are they like toboggans or sleds? Cos in my mind, the word "trolley" is like a supermarket trolley or in NZ, they call trams trolley buses.

0

in Estonia too, but less because of shitty winter where it can suddenly start raining and melting with icicles and stuff. a friend of mine who has kids once put them to sleep outside, it was a nice, not too cold winter weather, snow falling, then suddenly in ten minutes it became wet snow and heavy rain

0

Carole:

Yeah I get you. I always get surprised by peoples reactions to us having the kids sleep outside. because here its what everyone does. Same with sleeping with the window open. Kids sleep outside all year around for their naps during the day. and most people sleep with the window open all year round.

Dramapanda:
I'm guessing the correct English word might be "prams"? I could remember what it was in English so just called it the first thing I could remember :P ("wagon" seemed wrong ;) )

0

Actually I'm not Norwegian. I'm German and most of the time I live in Germany. However the biggest part of my family is Norwegian and I used to go there quite often. So letting the kids sleep outside was always something that seemed quite normal to me. But when I got a child myself, I realized that it is something you can't do everywhere. In Germany when you have small kids people tell you all the time that you have to be careful to don't let your kids out of your sight, because many children disappear (get stolen...) and that happens quickly. So as a German mother you feel kind of unwell when your Kinderwagen/barnevogn (I don't know the English word either...) is more than a meter away from you. Same with sleeping with the windows open. I used to do this till the day I moved in a flat where the sleeping room was on the first floor. I had the windows open the first three nights and couldn't sleep at all. There was always that little voice keeping me awake, asking me "what do you do when somebody climbs through the window". So I stopped sleeping with the windows open. When I'm in Norway I still sleep with the window open regardless of how easy to enter from the outside the sleeping room is. Norway just feels much safer overall.

For others (in case my comment was misleading): Norwegian mothers have the children outside but it doesn't mean that they're out of side. The banevogn is usually positioned so that the mother can easily have a look at it.

0

I live in Alaska; only time we would let our kids sleep outside is in the summer. And I live in the Gulf (the warm part!). Perhaps we get more wind, storms, etc. than the Nordic countries.

0

@Manin

Ah, prams. These days prams tend to be those for the littler babies, with the transparent covers you can pull down. So that makes sense too - they're quite cozy. The "strollers" are the ones for the older kids to sit upright.

It sounds really nice, though maybe nice for people who are used to very cold weather. I have lived for long periods in tropical weather and then more mild climates, so heavy snow and extreme cold is not so easy to bear. I once slept in a tent outside in -25 degrees, and then woke up in the middle of the night and freaked out to see icicles INSIDE the tent. :/

0

Liina:
Ah I see :) I had to get out of the habit of sleeping with the window open when I was in China, both cause of the smog getting in, and it really didn't make much difference as such. But I really missed having the cold air coming in. My flat now is on the ground floor but I still sleep with the window open.

Oh that's a good point to bring up: the babies are always placed where we can see them/have a baby caller with the child. They are not being neglected and just left to their own devices.

Islander_58North:
Hm, I'm not sure, not been to Alaska so can't say anything for the weather. I know my hometown is further north than Anchorage and that's about it :p We can get a lot of wind and bad weather too. But we let them sleep outside as much as possible.

0

Dramapanda:

Haha oh I've done that too! tents are cold to sleep outside in in the winter, even if you do dig a cold ditch for it. But it really cannot be compared to what the kids sleeping outside are experiencing. They have it much warmer and nicer. Thick duvet like "sleeping bags" (don't know the actual word in english) and blankets.

We actually don't use the more plastic/rain covers on the prams during the winter, cause they actually hold the cold in.

0

@Manin

Haha, the "cold ditch" - I actually know what you mean. The same friend who dragged me to the mountains for the -25 tent experience tried to drag me to some trip across the Yukon. This time, I read the information more carefully and it said we had to sleep in "cold ditches" and I laughed my head off and said maybe in a few years...

Aww, the babies sound very cute, all tucked up in puffer sleeping bags...

My dad had surgery on Monday for kidney stones that were to big to pass the hospital still hasn't let him come home. Hopefully today.

There was nothing to watch this week but One More Happy Ending which I said what I wanted about 7 in the recap I have yet to see 8, and Signal this weekend. I did catch up on some movies and played a lot of Cities: Skylines.

The Silenced: I liked it quite a lot actually. The movie is focused on mystery and suspense and I liked that. Both Park Bo-young and Park So-dam were excellent. I admit to being curious as to why on at least one site Park So-dam is listed as a supporting character when really she shares main character duties with Park Bo-young.

Memories of the Sword: As bad as some drama parents are I don't think any of them can compare to Seol-rang/Wallso not even close. As for the movie itself Jeon Do-yeon and Kim Go-eun were wonderful while I continue to be confused as to why people like Lee Byung-hun so much. Also I thought the movie was a bit jumpy and confusing in the beginning. On a side note I wonder if there's any footage somewhere of Kim Go-eun fangirling over her idol Jeon Do-yeon.

Cold Eyes: I liked it and that's really the best thing I can say about a movie where no one had a story, the shadow coming the closest to having one, or had real names. If dramaland wanted to adapt another movie other than Memories of Murder into a drama Cold Eyes would be a good choice. Han Hyo-joo is even more adorable now than she used to be, can I keep her as a pet? Is that a weird?

I'm almost positive I watched another movie but I don't remember what.

Happy OT Everyone!

It's been a nice, quiet 'commemoration' of Healer's first year on the Episode 20 thread. Some of the posts did not get posted with the technical hiccups, but when I locate them again, I'll post them.

*** SPOILERS (maybe) ***

Signal - Good through and through with such an engaging temporal paradox. Thinking about how the past could solve a crime or prevent a death, but ironically then cause the future to no longer exist as we know it. I call this a 'melo'-thriller because it never fails to deliver a twist that has me in tears. Even 'real' melodramas don't succeed in doing that!!!

CheeseITT - After reading the interviews, I'm more open to having a positive interpretation of all the obscure reactions and reasons behind Jung's decisions. I believe the manhwa never gave much explanation and I wonder if the drama might be more compelling or more frustrating if it went the same way. However, as a typical i-dotting and t-crossing viewer, I would like to get to know what all those weird characters' actions are about, and to see some resolution for all the 'bad' stuff that happens to Seol.

One More Happy Ending - I'm finally liking it a whole lot with Episodes 7 and 8. I like that all the characters and their ex-es have a turn to come forward in Ep 7, and of course, all the twists they add to each different sub-plot. After Angry Mom and My Love Eun Dong, I didn't think I could like Kim Tae Hoon's character in any role, however here, Gun Hak is sufficiently sympathetic and more nuanced maybe? Ep 8 had some LOL moments and sweet ones too. Loved the 'confession' of Ep 8. What a nice script! However, the subs were out of time. Anyone know where I can get the episode with better timed subs?

Moorim School - I'm waiting for the subs for tonight's episode. I hope it remains childishly cute, and that they will up the action. I'd like to see some real martial arts and a** kicking by the kids. We had a some last episode, and I want moar!

Madame Antoine - At times entertaining with a jerk of a psychologist I love to hate and side characters that don't make much sense. Han Ye Seul continues to be great to watch. I hope the plot carries through with what the show started as in developing the ahjumma psychologist a bit more and possibly the new 'patient' we had a glimpse of. So far I've found the scene of ahjumma psychologist to be more interruptions than adding to the flow.

I use the subs from this site. Sometimes it takes a little longer to upload the subtitles than in subscene but the subs fits perfectly from start to finish. (especially for Signal). And if I'm a little impatient, I use Aegisub to adjust the timings.

Hey there!

Not much happening although i had a rather weird vaguely paranormal thing happen this morning. I was sewing two pockets for my husband. I put away the needle and gave the pants to my husband. He puts the pants on and feels a sharp prickling. He put his hand into the pocket and finds two needles in the pockets I just sewed. On top of that, i dreamed of my dead Mom in her coffin at her funeral; her arms were frozen in an upraised position. Very unsettling, but i shall attempt to nudge this weirdness from my mind. Still, i hate when odd unsettling stuff happens cause the old Jamaican superstitious part of me rears its head when stuff happens.

Other than that, am getting ready for the launch of radishfiction.com on Apple/iPhone. I'll be serializing a story on it. So, yeah, excited.

Drama-viewing:

Signal: Sooo good. So much of the future, the present, and the past at stake.

All About My Mom: Is this finale weekend or not? I FF through the chairman/CEO love story. So ridiculous. Gonna be sad to see Mom die.

The Promise: A daily. Can't watch. Stolen baby at birth beginning. too stressing for me.

Six Flying Dragons: Love me an idealist warrior-turned prince going full on passionately evil. Writer-nim, i love you! You never skip a plot thread. Why, then, do we have to deal with Nameless?

Remember: Dear me! Was that a tear i shed for lonely isolated Nam Gyu Min?

Dazzling Temptation: Didn't have the nerve to watch this week's episode. Am wondering if our avengers will end up destroying themselves if they aim for total destruction of their enemies? And how did Prime Minister end up out of jail?

Am looking forward to Descendants, and to the sageuk drama with Lee Jun Ki.

I think that's it. Happy weekend, all.

On Dazzling Temptation, oh my goodness, during my mom's show-and-tell this week with the YouTube clips, I asked her the exact same thing about the jail situation!! *laughing*

Have a great weekend also.

Induce a repeat of the dream? I guess I could but I was never good at returning to dream worlds.

I went on a time travel/loop/paradox bender the past four weeks: Time Lapse, 11 AM, 11 minutes ago, Coherence, etc etc etc.

And all i can say is: Seriously, Mr Profiler and hot-head cop, do you not know that it is a very bad idea to play around with time? One would think that thee folks in Signal would have watched NINE, or 11 AM. The singularity is not to be meddled with.

All About My Mom: Is this finale weekend or not? I FF through the chairman/CEO love story. So ridiculous. Gonna be sad to see Mom die.

Carole,

I expect a major cryfest for Episode 53. The mom will definitely die in that episode. She has two wealthy kids-in-laws, so you know there is no shipping her off to the US to get cured.

I'm just hoping that Jin Ae needs some bedrest. In fact, since there are lots of photos of cast members holding babies on the internet, I suspect she will be fine and maybe name the baby girl Ok. That would be a sweet come around for her in the drama.

So I have a two-day weekend for the first time in FOREVER, and I'm in the mood for some jdramas because they're less of a time commitment than kdramas .

Can anyone help me out with some recs? Movie recs would also be welcome - I'll leave a list of a few dramas I've liked, if that helps.

- xxxHolic
- Hanzawa Naoki
- Nobuta wo Produce
- Gokusen
- BORDER
- Date
- Honey & Clover
- Princess Jellyfish
- Nobunaga Concerto

Failing all else, I'll still have Answer Me/Cheese on rewatch, but I rather fancy the idea of being able to complete a full series in one day - something I can't do with kdramas.

Drama Reccomendation
- Manhattan Love Story : this is really crazy story
about coffee owner that analyze the customer love story because he heard it, all the things happen in crazy situation,

- OOku Tanjou (10 ep) : this is really romantic,
about inner chamber when woman shogun need to pick a husband, there's a movie too about this too and also the over 50 episode but I think the movie and the 10 episode with Masato Sakai is the best one

- Soratobu Kouhoushitsu : fun
about a retired pilot that work for department at the Air Staff Office and reporter finding their life back

- Gomen ne seisshun : funny, lighthearted school drama

- Love shuffle : romantic comedy with romance, friendship and
4 couple rotate their partner to knew if their truly love their own chosen person,
Eight individuals gather to play by the rule of “swapping” partners every week. Is it love that connects them, or is it simply compatibility?

Return of Superman -- I have not watched the actual episode yet, but I read about the final interview and goodbye by the Song triplets. And I already cried. I am not sure I can handle to watch the actual episode. I'm going to miss them sooo much.
On a side note, Rohui (or Rohee?) 's dad is sooo talkative. Looks like her parents are very health conscious when it comes to food.

Please Take Care Of My Fridge -- I heard about it but only watched it this week. I've only seen a couple of episodes. And I'm loving the concept. It's fun.

Started watching King of Mask singer again, since many episodes got subbed, finally. woah so friggin cool, the sad General was great and the voice actress lady.

also Signal, but...it is too much. I have to take a break. I need a breather.

I had a workshop last saturday, we were making paper lanterns with some kids in a yurt. Three and a half hours of crafts. I have missed that. But most kids who participated were russian and I am not so good in that...

ad-lib: Sung Dong-il (Duck-seon's dad, reply 88) is known for his ad-lib acting. It was funny to see that his wife(Lee Il-wha) was busy studying the scripts, while SDI tells her there is no need to study.
Kim Jung-tae, Oh Jung-se, Yoo Hae-jin, Park Chul-min are all known for their ad-lib in the shows. And I read sometimes it bothers other casts.

The self-coloring sounded like a good idea, in this way, everyone can create their own unique postcard.

Probably you may want to insert your signature at the lower corner to signify your authorship and ownership.

the reason I asked was because of the Cheese ItT interviews and how they were all given a lot of freedom to act in this and that situation, and how they just went with the general mood of the episode, even secondary characters got to act how they felt, not strictly by the script. So I was wandering...

does it depend more on the director perhaps? I mean, KillHeal director was also very playful and trusted his actors , giving them freedom at certain moments. but are there PD´s who wouldn´t allow any ad-lib?

Required fields are marked *

I don't really watch behind the scene
but I watch one Happy Together episode when the MC talk about how almost all Jo Jung Suk famous catchphrases is adlib, how he stand out in the movie is his own adlib,

In my opinion, the director will give it if fir the flow because their adlib can happen in spontaneous moment like the kiss in kill me heal me,
I think they always welcome and approve adlibs if they think it fitting the situation since they already filmed it or already approved it before.
I remember that High Kick 2 PD even asked Hwang Jeung Um why she choose to act that way or angry that way,
as long as the original intention is not break, they welcome that, recent case in Reply 1988 script and 1994 that gets pictured just had word and extension like (*expression), I think they want the actor to think more for their character than just following the script,
I also remember that some veteran actor also revised their script and submitted it to get approval (it they changed a lot), and there's lady that played villain a lot in weekend drama call the PD and screen writer to add certain scene and depth to her character after she thinks it's an irrational behavior,
TL:DR : they welcome a good adlib

Hi beanies!

Long day at work but now I am here! All moved into my new flat (bye bye wage money) and now even my washing machine is up and running! (and not a moment to late *looks at laundry pile*)

Kdrama toddler style: season 2?
– Second lead got a girl!

-This conversation happened: girl: “we are now friends!”, boy “of course! and and we can go to each others house and play, and even do sleepovers!” girl: “hm.. playing is okay, but not sleepovers. Because my mum will be really sad if I move in with a boy while so young” (that was a hard one not to giggle at)

-the new 1 year old boys have all the girls fanning over them. Meanwhile one of the 2 year old boys is desperatly trying to get his “noona” to notice him (there was even flowers involved!)

Dramaland
so man shows to watch. no time to do so. Lately I’ve mostl been watching “Infinite Showtime” and rewatching/catching up on the japanese drama Hana Moyu.

I hope your son will find someone good soon :). Speaking of biological clock, I know I'm done..I mean I'm even glad I'm done when ever I remember those years of crying together with the baby cause of lack of sleep and engorged. But every time, every time I see the pudgy fingers babies have, with the fat ring on their arms. Ugh...I just melt. It makes me look at my husband and ask, "I shouldn't want another one, right? We have plenty, right?"

0

Exactly! It's so hard when one realizes that one's child-bearing days are over. Kind of wistful. I had wanted 4 kids but got two. So I kept going into denial. But now.. am all settled and accepting of age. Older son better fall in love with a good woman soon, though.

Hello all DB readers!

Another Open Thread, means another week passes by..

Last week I wrote a thing or two about Bu Bu Jing Xin and got few responses. Thank you Dramapanda, Sancheezy, and that girl. Well, BBJX is my first wuxia drama after looong time and I'm glad I really like it. I don't watch Palace or Lan Ling Wang. I tend to watch old dramas after careful deliberation and reviews. Heh.. So I need to be convinced first that those old dramas worth watching. But I'm planning to watch NiF soon.. (so many great reviews about this one)

Regarding Kdramas...
1. Madame Antoine
Watched 1-2 eps because my friend streamed the episodes and it's kinda impossible to resist so I just casually watched it. Han Ye Seul is sooo funny and cute, especially when she's blabbering French. Aside from gibberish French, can anybody tell me if she actually has good pronunciation/you can understand French well? Or yeah, she just sprouts something sounded like French?

2. Signal
On episode 4 and so far so good!!! Though I still have to wrap up my mind and think hard enough about the parallel universes and how the writer would solve the time-space continuum? Ep 4 is already heartbreaking enough and I do hope Time or Fate won't be too cruel in this drama.

3. Remember
I'm SO close to dropping this. Can't stand the writer wrote super-makjang tearjerker melodrama and can't stand Yoo Seung Ho cries and loses his memory. Oh, and I already know what happens in ep 17 so I don't know if I can continue this drama.

4. Cheese In The Trap
Yay for more Cheese next week!!!!
Thank you for Dramabeans staff too who took their time off to translate the casts' interviews. So precious! I always love to know what the actor/actress think when they play certain character and new tidbits behind the scene. And it seems Lee Yoon Jung PD got voted as the Most Beloved PD from all casts. :) :)

Madame Antoine

Her French dialogue is "tourist guide phrase book" French. Literally (great idea actually)! It's grammatically sound enough and her pronunciation is comprehensible for a not-at-all-native-speaker like me. She later uses Castellano and German too, and her pronunciations and intonations (despite the accent) are excellent compared to K-drama standards.

Happy Friday Everyone!

Knockout performances this week by Jung Kyung-Ho in One More Happy Ending. Cheese In The Trap - of course I missed watching it this week - but at least I was able to marathon a few more episodes of The Great Queen Seondeok. I've passed the halfway mark of the 62 episode drama.

I've read rave reviews for the following Sageuk kdramas here in the OT on Dramabeans. Curious to find out how they rank them?

Dae Jang Geum / Jewel in the Palace (2004)
Jumong / The Book of Three Han (2006)
Conspiracy in the Court (2007)
The Legend / The Story of the First King's Four Gods (2007)
Yi San (2007 - 2008)
The Great Queen Seondeok (2009)
Chuno / The Slave Hunters (2010)
Dong Yi (2010)
The Princess Man (2011)
Warrior Baek Dong-Soo (2011)
Tree with Deep Roots (2011)
Cruel Palace - War of Flowers (2013)
Six Flying Dragons (2015 - 2016)

Would you add Damo (2003), Iljimae (2008 Lee Jun-Ki version), Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010), and Maids (2014 - 2015) to the list? Any others?

I'm so with you with Sword and Flower. It was a fresh take on tv sageuks and I loved most of it. I still couldn't bring myself to watch the last episode but it's one of those dramas that your heart can not forget. I want more this kind with a good sageuk writer.

0

It could've been really great! Even with the obvious "princess disguise" but they should've brought in evil half-brother from the beginning to make it all make sense.

0

I'm not sure if I can rank them, because I have just watched these so far:

The Princess Man (2011) --> this sageuk is more about romance. It's quite ridiculous that Park Si Ho always failed in attempt to kill the king because there was always one traitor.

Tree with Deep Roots (2011) ---> not impressed on the first half (FFW a lot), but liked the rest episodes to the end of drama.

Six Flying Dragons (2015 – 2016) ---> the best sageuk with brilliant writing and acting so far. Some eps in the middle (around 5 eps) are a bit slow to my liking, but now they are picking up faster and faster.

Iljimae (2008 Lee Jun-Ki version) ---> I prefer Iljimae 2008 Jung Il Woo's version, because it was shot beautifully and the acting was so subtle. Lee Jun Ki's was hmmm....too comical/exaggerate acting.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010) --> My first sageuk! I love all 4 characters, I was all about the cross-dressing/gender-benders theme (not so much anymore now). The first time I watched Yoo Ah In in sageuk. His bromance with Song Joong Ki is my favorite ever, and he rocked the mane of glory!

I enjoyed parts of some of the others, I have to admit (back when I didn't know any better lol). It think the first ten-twenty episodes of Jumong were actually kinda good, though--but they got buried in a mountain of crap for the next 60 lol.

We are pretty much weird haha.

I love sageuks period and I can tolerate most of it even some bad ones like Doctor Jin for laughs. I can ride with the ones that are entertaining like Kim Young-Hyun's sageuks. (I prefer her solo works like Dae Jang Geum) but eventually I get tired of the historical manipulations that sometimes does not make sense so I'd go back and watch my old favorites or finish off a very long sageuk like Age of Warriors.

I think Jumong went through 2 or 3 set of writers. It's amazing that it came out on top till the end of it's run. It was entertaining like QSD but it's one of those sageuks that I don't go back to like Conspiracy in the Court, Shin Don, Sangdo etc.

*unlike*

0

Yeah, agreed. I liked it until his dad died and they spent like 40 episodes in Buyeo lol. Also, the acting was pretty bad.

A lot of the sageuk I really love--basically the ones you mentioned--are too painful to revisit very much (well, except Sangdo, which is pretty uplifting, although I was very sad for Kim Hyun-joo's character). Sometimes I just go back and watch the previews at the end of Shin Don episodes because I don't have time for the whole thing--I just love the part where the screen goes blue and the drum beats start lol. Kim Jin-min did an amazing job on that one.

0

How are you liking Age of Warriors? It was actually the first Korean show I watched when my husband and I accidentally stumbled across several episodes. I've never seen the whole thing though, and the episode count is a bit intimidating. The cast is impressive though, and I certainly enjoyed the handful of episodes we saw.

0

Oh I love it. It's my kind of sageuk, all history. I love the occasional commentaries. It makes it less confusing and the story just flows through. It felt like I was there, in Goryeo watching it all happen.

I thought it was interesting that one of the earlier commentaries mentioned how Lee Ui Bang who instigated the rebellion is Lee Seong-gye's ancestor. I guess overthrowing rotten governments runs in the Lee family lol.

In order of history: Emperor Wang Gun (200 eps)-> Age of Warriors (158 eps)-> Shin Don (63 eps)-> Six Flying Dragons (50 eps).

0

Thanks, Kiara. While I thoroughly enjoy well-done fusion shows, it's also nice to watch more traditional sageuks that actually stick to the history. I'll definitely add Warriors to my plan to watch list, and I may pick up Shin Don again once SFD ends - I got bogged down about half way through, but it would be interesting to learn more about the end of Gongmin's reign.

0

More complete list of Goryeo sageuks in order. (minus fusions)

Taejo Wang 2000-2002 (Taejo founder of Goryeo-200 eps) -> Dawn of the Empire 2002-2003 (Taejo's sons eps 94)-> Empress Chunchu 2009 (78 eps) -> Age of Warriors 2003-2004 (the Military rule era-158 eps) -> God of War 2012 (56 eps) -> Shin Don 2005-2006 (Yuan era - 63 eps) -> Tears of the Dragon 1996-1998 (Yuan - Joseon 159 eps), Jeong Do Jeon 2014 (Yuan- Joseon 50 eps).

0

I have watched them all and many more. My favorites missing here are (origianal) HurJoon, Immortal Yi Soon-shin and Sangdo. From your list, I loved Damo, Dae Jang Geum, The Great Queen Seondeok, The Princess Man, Tree with Deep Roots and SFD, and as lighter ones -Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want epic sweep and a good story, Jumong is a blast. Tree with Deep Roots and Painter of the Wind are beautifully filmed, fascinating looks at the way language and art respectively intersect with power, although both take huge historical liberties. I'm currently also enjoying Six Flying Dragons, although it's hard to know if it will stay strong all the way to the end. Damo and Chuno are both really pretty look at, with great fight scenes, but the writing in both of them drove me nuts.

Six Flying Dragons (2015 – 2016)

I may add Iljimae Lee Jun Ki and Ballad of Seodong since they had one of the best female lead, she just so strong, know how to adjust her temperament and she just great imo

After my decision to binge Signal once it ends, there's not much to watch for me this week.

I was bored enough to try episode 6 of One More Happy Ending, but the writing is so inexcusably poor that I had to give it up before half-time. However, kudos: Never before did a show (that is not a dedicated comedy) manage to make me dislike every single character in it.

Remember
Okay, you take a sageuk backstabbing plot and adapt it to contemporary times. Except you don't adapt it at all. Which is a bit of a problem when you ignore the fact that mass media and copy machines render your plot nonsensical. In such a sageuk, characters can be exclusively defined by external factors. But in a modern setting, characters without inner personality are simpy no characters.

I feel you, Jon. I don't know what to watch at all, so I even watch OMHE ep 7 and 8. Which, by the way...I find MUCH better than episode 5 and 6. So there, maybe if you're so hard pressed you'll continue on. Although, like you...I still don't particularly care for any of the characters. I roll my eyes quite a bit watching it.

You are not the only one who mentioned that 7&8 improved a lot over the previous episodes.

But I don't think I can take it anymore. I've overcome my initial disappointment about this show not being a comedy. But I grew to hate the characters -- especially the main characters -- more and more, especially when the show works so hard to force them down my throat.

At this point, I don't care about Mi-mo at all anymore, and I want Soo-hyuk to be hit by a truck for good. His fake woobieness makes me wanna puke.

Sageuk, not so sure. The screenplay is by the screenwriter of Attorney, so he might have proposed an 80's drama during the dictatorship in Korea thus the lack of technology. And due to the usual problems (budget) could not be done.

Good Friday, Beanies,

It's GORGEOUS here with 80 degree weather and flowers blooming everywhere. I guess winter is over. No wonder I never wear my sweaters.

For those who asked, my family medical crisis has calmed down. My 22-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Melanoma in early January. Since the tumor was on her forehead, she had to make a lot of decisions about the scar and plastic surgery. We learned this week that the surgeon was able to remove the entire tumor and the disease is in situ. So now she needs to recover from the surgery and get her skin checked every 3 months. You do not want to get this disease, so please use sunscreen and wear a hat and be sure to check you skin once a month (even if you are not Caucasian--then be sure to check your feet). Melanoma is the #1 cancer of young women, ages 15-30. It is rare on the face and mostly found on the legs, especially the backs.

************Drama Watching***********
All About My Mom--Coming to the end. The acting in this drama was incredible. Oh Min Seok (Hyeong Gyu)--I honor you. Crawling around in the street and choke-crying was so moving. Go Doom-Shim (the Mom)--so convincing as a cancer patient. You make me cry. Kim Kap-Soo (the dad)--can you get any better? Your reactions are so real.

I know not many of you here have watched it, but the ratings are incredibly high (38%) for a reason. You just have to be able to get through 54 episodes.

And the cinematography is sometimes outstanding. The scene where the Mom tells her daughter about her disease was so beautifully staged. Oh, and it was so easy to translate because all the said was, "Mama." "Jin Ae." x 10.

One More Happy Ending--I'm watching this for Jung Kyung-Ho and he is not disappointing. The chemistry between the two main characters is off the charts. The doctor, on the other hand, yuck. He's pretty, but no substance. As one commenter on Viki wrote, "Worst second lead ever."

Remember--Gotta get myself in the mood to watch this one. I already cried at Mom and Happy Ending, so I'm not sure I can handle more sadness.

We Got Married--Having fun with the Ohye couple. They are so comfortable with each other. I LOVED the belly dancing. Yewon was so good! Min Seok was so awkward. Also, them talking about being a real couple seems too staged for me. We'll have to see how it goes now that Mom has ending. That drama was so serious, I know Min Seok has been holding back (hard to believe, huh?)

I love that Kwak Si-yang & Kim So-yeon did a cameo on One More Happy Ending. So-yeon was excellent as the screaming burned wife. I like how we get to see lots of BTS with these two.

That's it for now. Getting ready for Descendants of the Sun.

I'm so glad things are looking up for her!! I'll be praying for no complications and a speedy recovery. On a less serious note, 80 degree weather?! I want some. We're covered in fog here, so it's like living in the clouds. Sounds fun, feels cold.

A shout out to alua and others who were recommending the jdrama about old cheap sweet store. I'm hopeless when it comes to remembering jdrama titles, but I really really liked that drama, so thank you so much for the recommendation!

Now...does anyone have a recommendation on romantic drama that covers adult (meaning the people are handling it in a mature manner) and have a happy ending?

I watched this jdrama about a wife who's married to a husband who got laid off but doesn't really want to lower his standard to seek any job to support his family. Therefore all the financial burden falls on the wife, as well as taking care of the daily household grind. In a middle school reunion, the wife meets her first love again and some sparks start again. As usual however, jdrama and its not happy ending left me with such bitterness in my mouth. On the top of that, the sub really suffered towards the final episode. There was this very important self reflection that I wish I could understand and wasn't translated at all! I wanted to cry because I felt like I just wasted 10 hours for nothing. I mean not only nothing, but I felt like I just got snubbed completely.

@Nomad

Recently watched 9 End 2 Outs (a little hard to come by, since it is an oldie, but I thought it was worth it); for some reason I was expecting your standard rom-com, but it is actually quite mature and thoughtful; shockingly, it turns out that past relationships deserve to be honoured too :-) .

I'm the same. always hold out starting on jdramas atm because you never know about the subs. or even if the entire drama will be subbed. It's always sad to get into a drama and really liking it, and then suddenly have hte subs stop.

I do think the kdrama dominance has its role to play. Although the japanese reluctance to let anything out of the country do play its part as well. But yeah, kdramas are popular, and available, and that does make them overshadow the rest.

Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu had pretty mixed reviews from what I read.

Haven't watched it myself though – IMO, Fukushi Sota just doesn't have the acting skills to carry a drama in a leading role and I no longer even try his projects.

Nomad: <Now…does anyone have a recommendation on romantic drama that covers adult (meaning the people are handling it in a mature manner) and have a happy ending?

I can't think of rom-coms, only more serious dramas that feature a romance, e.g. Tokyo Wankei, Golden Bowl (actually, that's pretty rom-comish), Nagareboshi (the romance is very subtle in this but IMO ultimately very compelling), Soratobu Kouhoushitsu, or my all-time favourite Arifureta Kiseki. Most of these deal with all kinds of life issues, not just coupling up two people – but that's what I love about them.

Tatta Hitotsu no Koi, which is focused on the romance, is a bit cheesy but surprisingly realistic for its genre.

Itsuka Kono Koi wo Omoidashite Kitto Naite Shimau is feel like real, adult relationships but it's still airing and I don't know what kind of ending we'll get. I love love love it so far though.

Random (non-romance) recommendation: Suika (2003). A kind of slice-of-life drama about the little things, like Okashi no Ie, but with girls in a sharehouse.

alua, thanks for your jdrama recommendations. I am currently watching Love That Makes You Cry (truly felt the characters' loneliness radiating from the screen. Cried buckets), Okashi no Ie is lots of fun but yet to finish it though. It didn't hook me to marathon it. One other is the currently on air comedy of the single guy living alone until his father shows up, and his divorced neighbour.(really need to start remembering titles!) I personally like the issues of marriage, divorce and the single life being discussed. Love the father!

Thank goodness it is the weekend!
It's been a hectic week since I went to see two plays, one live at the west end, the other broadcast in the cinema. I always feel bad for the actors how draining it must be to do the same performance multiple times a day with the same energy, passion. I'm exhausted by the end of the performance, but both plays were brilliant and worth the dreaded eye bags the next day!

Currently watching:

All about my Mom - Bring the tissues!! It's finally time to say goodbye to the Mom :(
I wasn't expecting to cry last week but that last scene, couldn't stop crying. Plus oh min-seok, I'm really excited for his next drama, I was in floods of tears after he was struggling to come to terms with Mom's illness. It just seems so cruel, that just as everyone was getting along, Mom won't be there.

One More Happy Ending - I just wish I could lock Da jung and her husband in a room together and let them talk properly. I hope there is a way for them to resolve their issues properly soon and either get back together or divorce amicably to co-parent their son and be happy. It was great to see the back story of Soo-hyuk and how he met Min-woo's mother. I'm interested to see how HJ will react as Mi-mo recognises her true feelings.

Return of Superman - Didn't expect that Eugene's husband would be so chatty in the show. I'm interested to see how he copes with Soo-ah and Seul-ah ,Daebak in the house! I felt so sad that the triplets left the show,I can't believe how much they have grown in the last year. I can't help but wonder how long until the original cast members leave?

Madame Antoine - thank you for setting up a thread where we can talk about it! I don't think I have ever heard a character say he is controlling his neurons, or holding them back. I couldn't go on with the episode after that point because I was laughing too hard. I've watched up to episode 5, hoping to catch up later on next week.

Signal - Have yet to watch last week's episode. I am hoping that everything will be okay.

Signal caught my radar, already download all eps and waiting for good time to watch.

Non-kdrama

Socialphobia engsub is out!! (Dancing frantically). Can't wait to watch this really ?

My week is miserable though without weekly dose of Cheese in the Trap. I miss cheese squad!! ? Thankyou DB for translating interview, i kinda wonder about Kim Go Eun and Lee Sung Kyung's interview though hihi

I almost dropped Haburashi (Toothbrush/Female Friends), but then ep 5 brought all the edgy elements to light in one final scene that leaves me wanting to know more about the imbalance in Suzune's and Mizue's relationship. I'm not a fan of suspense, but this drama has an intriguing aspect of suspense in daily life. Mizue''s whacky personality is downright addicting in a bad way.

With several shows preempted, I found myself rather entertained by Please Take Care of My Refrigerator with Jung Joonyoung. He is the golden boy these days that can do no wrong. It was the highlight this week. My fav will always be Taeyang’s and GDragon’s refrigerators.

If anyone is interested in continued Moorim School recaps, you can find them at my blog, http://www.cimiart.wordpress.com picking up with ep 9 by Tuesday~

Have a great weekend! \/

I did watch the Refrigerator shows with Taeyang and GDragon! GDragon's fridge contained truffles, caviar and I can't remember what was the third - three really expensive gourmet food items. And then I think he told the chef he liked to put truffles on his eggs, or something really mundane which led to them all dropping their jaws. But the chef got back at him for asking if he could use his truffles (since he obviously wanted them noted) and GDragon said yes, and then sheepishly said, please leave him some as they were expensive!

I haven't tried Haburashi yet, what interests me about it is Ikewaki Chizuru, who has who has some very interesting (often daring) roles in her filmography – she was fabulous (together with Gou Ayano) in "Soko nomi nite hikari kagayaku". Happy friday :)
I'm watching lots of dramas at the moment.
CITT. I was behind and I took advantage of the break to catch up. All I can say is poor In-Ho. He's really going to get his heart broken and I can't help but feel sorry for him. He was just adorable in the scenes when he realized his feelings. And Seo Kang-Joon must be the hottest guy alive. How does he even?
I came to love Beak In-ha. She's hilarious.
A scene I loved is the one when the crazy guy who stalks Soul tells the lazy guy to get himself together. Finally someone told him what I would have told him from the start and the fact that it was the guy who is more messed up than he is, that did it, is hilarious hahah.
Moorim School. I catched up with it as well. All I cared about was the bromance. Now they messed it up and all I care about is Chi-Ang and Seul-Ah. When is he going to realize that she likes him? When is he going to give up on "his Ariel"? I won't forgive the writers if they don't get together and I need at least one kiss.
OMHE. I loved episodes 5 and 6 but 7 and 8 were a bit boring. And I'm already tired of the love triangle. The doctor is unbearable. What frustrates me the most is how he and Mi-Mo act as if it's been years since they're dating when it's like a month and they kissed once. Things aren't going well and if they are not going well SO soon, why even bother? Why???
Madame Antoine. I enjoyed episodes 5 and 6 while I hadn't like 3 and 4. Soo-Yun is finally realizing he likes Hye-Rm but I'm here for Ji-Ho and Yoo-Rym. Finally someone that kiss. I hope they'll keep doing it and thatñ he'll fall for her haha.
Signal. This one is the best. I just love it. The twists! The tears! I can't wait for the next episode. I don't even know what else to say because my words wouldn't do it justice.
Local hero. I think it's interesting and I love Lee Soo-Hyuk in it. I never watched him in anything but I have an idea of what kind of roles he usually goes for and I think, even if I haven't seen him in those, that this role he has here is more suitable to my tastes.

Yes it is so amazing to see how actor/actresses made it big when there were nobody in their early dramas. In addition to this, there is School series, Delicious proposal etc. where you recognize them. And as far as I am concerned the worst actor that I saw in their earliest? drama was Park Sin-yang (very surprising especially now that he is teaching other actors to act, and leading the new show Actors' school).

Oh my goodness I've been waiting for OT this week, my week was a mess and I was just like 'if I can make it to Friday, then I won't have work and I can just watch dramas.' Here's the story, which you can skip if you don't want to read my first-world problems:

So I am a Sterling Scholar semi-finalist for Chinese, and I had my interview on Tuesday. I totally felt like I'd failed it, except for the part where I got to talk Chinese with one of the judges. So I was already totally stressed, and then the next day I found out I did terribly on my AP Physics test. I ended up studying through lunch, leaving just enough time to leave at the end and buy myself a pity lunch from my favorite place to eat during my next class. And then--hahahaha--my teacher who's ALWAYS let me eat in his class spent the first five minutes publicly telling the class (read: me, in the front row) that we're not allowed to eat here and we all know that and... I totally thought we was joking, until he called me out even more. It was humiliating, and I totally broke down because I was already so stressed. But I couldn't just leave, so I sat crying quietly through the class. AND THEN (haha almost done, don't worry) I got a phone call in my next class saying 'congratulations! You're a finalist now for Sterling Scholar!' And I was so wiped out I just gave up and didn't know what to do with my life. And I still had to work 5 hours that night. Haaaaaaaaaaah I need a break. Don't laugh that food was what 'broke the camel's back'. I'm a teenager, that's all we really think about, right? ;)

Venting over. In drama news, I've been fitting episodes of Ghost into the cracks of free time in my schedule, using it to keep myself sane. I'm really enjoying it so far. I've been watching the timed comments as the show goes on and I know some people don't think SJS does a good job of channeling DC's Hades, but I feel like he's got a good balance going on.

Signal: hahahahahaha you'd better come through for me. I believe you can change the future. I believe it. Right? I mean, you've gotta give me something to hold onto.

I've been looking at watching My Girlfriend is a Gumiho next, because I value DB recap opinions and I've liked the Hong Sisters so far (I've avoided watching Big and Warm and Cozy). Any other recommendations for a completed, fluffy rom-com I can watch next?

Cozybooks--Keep it all in perspective. If you end up with a not so good score on the AP Physics, it just means you can retake the class and do well when you get to college. There is too much emphasis on those stupid tests. What's important is learning and learning to learn.

Take a shower when you get home and have some cocoa to up your blood sugar. Hugs.

Brrr bit cold and wet this end, so good reasons for staying in as much as possible.

Caught up on Signal now - it's pretty good. I like they went straight into the heart of the time paradox, and also it was a surprised SPOILER - when a main character is offed. But it'll be interesting to see how that plays into the time loop premise they've set up.

Catching up on some old dramas since this week's pretty dry in terms of watching fare.

I've watched Mary Stayed Out All Night. I liked it for its indie scene vibe, which reminded me of college and also indie areas where people randomly would run into each other at local bars or pubs. But the plot got a bit crazy and characters kept flip-flopping on their opinions or decisions so it was a bit messy. The actress who played Mary is very cute though, and I liked Jang Geun Suk in his role where he's a lot more laid back and cool.

I've started watching Bad Guys, which is really good fun and the action sequences are great. The gritty tone of it is well done, with sharp bits of humour. The lead actor who plays the damaged detective is fantastic - his screen presence is so strong.

Other than that, not feeling that inspired by dramas at the moment, though I'd definitely keep up with SFD and Cheese next week.

Yeah Dramapanda, MSOAN is quite entertaining, provided that you don't mind the flip-flopping "bride-sharing" makjang.

I'm quite surprised you did not mention Kim Jae-wook, I started to like him after watching MSOAN. When Jung-in's seemingly nonchalant outer layer was being peeled off to reveal the tender soul within, I just couldn't help feeling so sorry that he had to carry all the emotional baggage. I loved the scene in which he followed a down-spirited Mary to the bookstore and quietly sat by her side on the floor to accompany her while she read a book. His sensitivity was also revealed when he presented Mary with a room lined with high wall bookshelves, filling with Mary's favorite books with his own reflective annotation written by hand on the front page of each book, that was so touching! It said so much about how much he loved Mary, but in a non pushy "if you love someone set them free" kind of way.

The makjang bits really did my head in. Those parents - did they all attend HOW TO BE THE WORST PARENT EVER school together? Moo Gyul's mother and Jung-in's father take the cake, I think, oh god. And Mary's dad gets consolation prize too for being an ass for almost the whole series before suddenly growing a few cells of wisdom (I can understand why any dad would want Mary to stop dating Moo Gyul but to force marriage onto someone else just for money, no no no!)

You're right, I should have mentioned Jung In. I think the way they styled him isn't really my bag - he looks so cold and prim. But he did that really swoonable thing of giving Mary a library, and with such thoughtful touches in it too. I would have married him for that! (I would have married the Beast who did that for Belle too. - being a sucker for books.) And yes, he was kind and also far more dependable than Moo Gyul with his abandonment issues.

Mary’s dad is quite a comic character, I remember the scene in which Moo-gyul woke up in the resort room being confronted by the fat tummy of Mary’s father clad in a monkey t-shirt, that is so funny and comical! :)

Yeah, sometimes girls tend to fall madly in love with bad guys, no matter how good the nice guy treated her, all is futile.

If you can’t get enough of JGS’s “bad guy” demeanour, you may want to watch Love Rain as his interaction with Yoona is highly entertaining (not the parents generation, but as their grown-up children, from ep5 onwards). This drama reunited the producer and writer of Winter Sonata and Autumn in My Heart after so many years, so it does really have good things to offer, and it is a rom-com, so it has a more light-hearted and cheery feel than those two earlier dramas. If you can tolerate its share of makjang about sacrificing love for parents’ sake, blah, blah blah, it is worth watching. Among JGS’s dramas, I like this character most in LR as a sophisticated and flirtatious fashion photographer, even more than Tae-kyung in You’re Beautiful.

Haha, yes that scene was pretty funny. Mary and her dad together were also quite sweet. She's very cute though.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will check it out.

I watched Bel Ami not long ago too - have you seen that? On paper, I first encountered it with the title "Pretty Man" and the description was not so interesting as a premise. Then I read somewhere its title was actually Bel Ami, which was intriguing because of the reference to the novel.

The drama turned out better than I expected. JGS played quite a difficult role - his character is selfish, narcissistic, ambitious, sometimes cruel - and yet he has to be someone we empathise with and root for. He did quite a good job, I think. And the twist on the premise was good too - the idea of different encounters of different types of women and their agendas. But I did like Daniel Choi's character in it very much - so kooky, quirky, original and sweet. I loved his cutting-edge fashion too. Bo Tong should have married him! They would have a blissful life of hunting treasures at flea markets, decorating and doing all sorts of interesting design-related things together.

JGS is a better actor than expected, but probably does trade on his looks a lot. I watched an old variety show that had him in it - he has a pretty funny personality, if just for really lacking much self-consciousness and being quite self-absorbed. It'd be interesting to see what he does in the forthcoming drama after SFD.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Bel Ami. I watched it about the same time as Flower Boy Next Door, it was kind of strange that these two dramas didn't register at all. I couldn't recall much of anything, I must have speed-watched them. I just did a revisit of the synopsis and realised IU is Bo Tong, couldn't believe it! She was so pretty in The Producers, but in Bel Ami, she was really very "Bo Tong" ordinary with that short wavy mop hairstyle. I think I didn't quite like the plot of Bel Ami and JGS's character, his hairstyle, mannerisms, etc., and due to that I lost patience in uncovering the character's deeper layers. If you like Ma-te, I believe you will definitely fall for Seo Joon in LR, not only is he "prettier" and more stylish than Ma-Te, he has a more appealing personality too! :)

Before JGS adopted his trademark long hair pretty man image, he looked quite manly in Beethoven Virus with a crew cut and sideburn. And before that in Hong Gil-dong, he already had that pretty look as a prince in sageuk costume (not hanbok, but more like those in Chinese kung fu movies). Yeah, I'm also looking forward to seeing his upcoming drama, I wonder if he will drop that pretty man image for a change.

Hi Dramapanda, earlier I posted a response to you, but it was "under moderation", I posted a second time, and the same thing happened, not sure why, it's a first time for me, everything I said is totally benign and not at all offensive, weird.

Yeah, weird. I only had that happen once, and I think it was because I used the phrase "anti-Asian" but it was used in an innocuous way...

Murphy's Law of Love (Taiwanese).

Thank you Cozybooks. I will definitely watch this. There is something about Taiwanese dramas (when done right ^^) that has a very strong appeal for me.

And..
ΜARS (Taiwanese)
Pride (Jdorama)
Operation Proposal (epic time-travelling for her affection)
Beautiful Days (or:How LBH became the leading man after the sexiest sex-appeal in k-dramas)
Romance (K-drama 2002)
The Marriage Plot (the immature leading man falls for her while she's in love with someone else. Not very original but it's cute nevertheless)
Spring Days (guess who got the girl? JIS falls for GHJ for all the wrong reasons you can imagine and more, lol)
From Five to Nine (is Yamapi a stalker or not? Or is he just an inexperienced young man who can't show his feelings the proper way? Who knows! It's a bizarre and a bit disturbing manga anyway.)
Hyena (a 2006 tvN drama where the alpha-male is gay and the underdog obviously gets the girl. He had fallen for her while she was after her gay friend. It's My Best Friend's Wedding in reverse)

How did I forget the funny All About My Romance? Though I dislike LMJ in everything (except in Who Are You? It's my personal prejudice and I'm not proud of it.) the romance between two adults who behave like teenagers was so entertaining.
The more recent Falling for Innocence gave us both comedy and melodrama for the leading man who falls for the heroine because of his "new" heart.

Thank you Kalel. I love your descriptions. I will have to watch Beautiful days again. I have seen Romance and Mars - will definitely have a look at the rest. The Marriage Plot and Hyena sounds quite interesting.

Park Hae Jin in Bad Guys, wow.

He looks so much like Yoo Jung from Cheese (apart from being the same person!) in terms of the styling - same clean cut hair with side fringe, his clothes tend to neat classic colours (though Yoo Jung wears more light-coloured tops/coats), but it's generally a similar very tidy, neat and sleek look.

Watching his portrayal of the detached, sociopathic killer is like watching the id of Yoo Jung become detached and left to wander for his own devices. He somehow manages to be very still, very impressive and yet also quite creepy and cool at the same time.

Hi Dramapanda,

I like the comparison you've made between Park Hae Jin's two characters in Bad Guys and CITT, I see it, too. Wouldn't that make an interesting story where a person's id goes down a dark path - a runaway impressive, creepy, cool "other" self. You nailed it.

Oh thanks... that would be interesting...maybe funny too - like a whole film where everyone's IDs get loose and wreak havoc....

I practically died missing Cheese in the Trap so instead I decided to watch 'Life is Beautiful'. I'm new to the longer drama's and at 63 episodes I was a bit intimidated. I was really interested in the gay/coming out storyline and the show did not disappoint. The show depicted incredibly well how scary coming out in Korea must be for gay people. The eldest son is struggling with hiding his sexuality, we see his boyfriend's life has fallen apart from his sexuality being discovered. The eldest son becomes resigned to the idea of hiding who he is to his whole family/outside world for the rest of his life. When he finally comes out, his family choose to accept him in some of the most beautiful and loving scenes I've ever seen. I can't say how utterly lovely I found the story. Brilliant.

Starting to realise that I'm very much into the hot Ahjussi's out there in dramaland. Recently it was Chief Min in Oh My Venus, then it was the middle uncle from Life is Beautful (Lee Min Ho's Bad Dad in City Hunter), and now it's both Dad's from the Chinese web series Addicted (Heroin). Phwar! I'm not mad at it.
