The fake-turned-real in-law battle begins in Strange Daughter-in-Law
by javabeans
There’s a new teaser out for Strange Daughter-in-Law, but I can’t show it to you (nor can I see it myself), since KBS is strangely determined to keep their online videos unavailable and geo-restricted. Grarrr. Do you want me to watch your dramas or not?
Anyway, here are two new posters instead, and the one above pretty much encapsulates the premise in one pithy image: trendy young woman (Dasom) romances a sweet dork (Ryu Soo-young), and his traditional mother (Go Du-shim) is not happy about it. (Though really, is Go Du-shim ever happy about anything in a drama?) I suppose this is the plot of every drama ever, and perhaps also every real-life marriage.
Of course, what every real-life in-law conflict doesn’t have is a variety show as its setting, which is where Strange Daughter-in-Law takes place. The “daughter-in-law experiment” leads to a blurring of lines between fake and real; things start out manufactured for television when an idol singer (Dasom) enters into a We Got Married-esque mock marriage, and romance springs up between the couple for real. Other daughter-in-laws in the mix include Sohn Eun-seo as a successful careerwoman and Kim Yoon-seo as a wife who wants to return to work, which leaves her less time to fulfill all her daughter-in-law duties. Just how much do you think her mother-in-law hates that idea?
Strange Daughter-in-Law takes up the Monday-Tuesday slot following I Remember You and premieres on August 17.

i really hate when they don't allow watching the videos other than certain areas. this makes watching dramas very difficult.
anyway this one sounds interesting.looking forward to watching it.

I can see where they might restrict complete episodes viewing due to licensing, but it just seems dumb that they would geo-restrict trailers. Not the first time I have felt like shoving a spoiled pile of tofu in their faces.

Not sure if you've tried this, but there's a free Google chrome add-on called Hola that changes your IP address to let you bypass geo restrictions. I usually use it to watch things from the BBC, but it might work in this case too.

Oh, I've heard about this too! You're basically borrowing someone else's connection.
It's like you're using someone else's computer to access kdramas while another user elsewhere is using your computer to access porn or participate in DDOS attacks or other shady things. :(
Or they could just be watching shows from your region. But are you really willing to assume it's as innocent as that?

I agree with Totoro in using a VPN to watch it, but please don't use Hola. It's riddled with problems and you'll put yourself at a security risk using it. There are many available alternatives in the Chrome store.

It's better and safer to just buy one, there are good services that are $5 a month. It never fails that if a service is free, you are the product.

When JavaBeans and Girlfriday were giving a recap of Kcon I found myself really wishing they'd do a podcast that explains the Korean entertainment industry's current perspective on distribution, licensing and revenue capture.
From a professional viewpoint, a lot of the moves they make seem counterproductive from both a revenue and market share standpoint. (My background is in corporate finance so I admittedly geek-out on this kind of stuff.)
These folks are not dummies. I'd like to understand why they manage access the way they do, and what their endgame is.

Are you sure? When I watched a documentary on Napster a while back (which, admittedly, was rather one-sided), one thing that struck me was not so much that the big players in the music industry were wrong but their complete denial of the how technology was/is/will be changing the world. I can't remember the exact quotes, but think people who believe the internet was going to be a short-time "fad".

I am not sure if they are dummies or not, but they don't seem to be on top of things all that much.
They get all picky about regional licenses, but then totally fail to follow up on bootleg copies on unlicensed sites and sometime even on YouTube.

Over the past 3-4 years I cannot think of a single drama that has been improved with extensions. Every one that I can recall just got worse.

So many title changes.
I liked Dasom in Melody of Love. Also she is in SISTAR which I like too. Cute an bubbly.
Ryu is kinda old, but maybe that is the plot?
Go, I just couldn't stand her in High Society. Too shrill and awful MOM. Now she is a Mother-In Law? OMG...Hope she doesn't drive me nuts like the last drama where I wanted to kick her across town!

Dammit. Don't we the 'foreign' market exist?? Those havinga moan about the US please shut up. Its worse in other countries, umhummmm the UK for example and more often than not those in the US usually have access to most dramas in comparison to us folks over in Europe.

You can blame the UK/Euro governments and policy for most of those problems. Euro especially has some very odd licensing rules for media.
