Ryu Soo-young, Dasom to headline KBS comedy Taming Mother-in-Law
by javabeans
KBS has announced its (probable) lineup for upcoming drama Taming Mother-in-Law, with its three main leads either now confirmed or in final talks to settle their participation: Ryu Soo-young (Endless Love, Two Weeks), Sistar idol Dasom (Melody of Love), and veteran dramaland mom Go Du-shim (High Society).
The drama’s initial promotional round hit a hiccup with its original title, Killing Mother-in-Law, and the very vague description that didn’t make clear whether the killing was literal or metaphorical. The title was then changed, and the plot clarified to be about a fake mother-in-law relationship: The female lead character (Dasom) is an idol singer past her popularity prime who dreams of making her comeback, and to improve her image, she takes on the daughter-in-law role in a “taming mother-in-law variety experiment.”
Within the variety program, Dasom clashes with Go Du-shim, who has been the faithful wife in the head family of an ancestral clan for the last 25 years, and is determined to preserve the dignity of her place. Basically, it’s old versus new, traditional versus modern, up versus down and all that. She’s warm “on the inside,” which is code for mean-on-the-outside, and prone to acting out of impatience, which leads to misunderstanding.
Ryu Soo-young plays the eldest son of the head family who’s “good at nothing but mathematics,” which is at least helpful in that he is an assistant professor of math. I find it amusing and realistic that despite his good looks and stable career, his family position keeps women at bay—no modern woman wants to marry into an old-fashioned family that still adheres strictly to tradition, which makes her position difficult and burdensome. Hm, where would he find such a woman, I wonder?
It’s no surprise when the two ladies butt heads while on the show… and then, to cap off those horrors, the “worst-case scenario” comes to pass when they become actual mother- and daughter-in-law. Eventually, they work things out and come to value the meaning of family and reconciliation and all that, but in the meantime we’re promised lots of conflict and humor in the light family comedy.
Taming Mother-in-Law will be a Monday-Tuesday drama on KBS following I Remember You, and is, interestingly enough, planned for a 12-episode run. It kicks off in August.

Apparently fitting the Korean standard of beauty is all that's needed by way of "talent" to fill a role on a public broadcast network.
Or to be an idol, for that matter (from what I've seen, this girl isn't much of a singer or even a good dancer)

I agree, plus I feel sorry for the actual actresses/actor who have the training, skills and/or education but who are not getting many of these roles (they don't even get a chance to audition since these roles are mostly handed out).
I truly sympathize with them but that being said it does not mean Idols shouldn't be handed any roles (because some of them do turn out to be great) but I think it is fair to say that everyone should at least have the opportunity to audition for these roles before they are offered.

some idols actually have the acting talent (I've seen fantastic performances out of Yoon Doo-joon and Im Shi-wan in the last year, and IU and Choi Soo-young among the girls) but honestly, the likes of this girl are not among them.
And when you know that even idols' acting opportunities are decided on the basis of who's considered the best looking/most popular in a group and NOT who's shown any evidence of acting talent, it's even more farcical. Why should drama viewers have to see this kpop 'status' nonsense playing out on their screens?

Actually, Dasom gets a lot of flack from knetz for not being pretty enough (they think her neck is too long or something). In my opinion, she's actually not so bad as people make her out to me. She ranged from mediocre to ok during most of what I saw of Melody of Love - but then again, she was acting alongside Baek Sung-hyun who is just outright bad sometimes, despite his experience.

I saw Dasom in Melody of Love and thought she was great in it. Go Du-Shim is also one of my faves (ever since All About Marriage). So, I can't wait! :D

I agree pogo. Korean equation: beauty=talent.
Who'd have thought? Just because you're beautiful doesn't necessarily mean you're good at acting. I loathe idol actors ( ones who can't act of course). My point is beautifully illustrated by the flop web drama we broke starting sandara park who looks like a child whining.

beauty=talent is the basis of pretty much the whole world, not just Korea.
If you were looking for something to watch without knowing anything at all, you will like choose the prettier cover or prettier person just because it aesthetically appeals to you. It a basic human feeling, nothing to be ashamed off.
Beauty + Talent is a rarity.
If you like someone for their talent/looks, you will eventually find them appealing, even if they are aesthetically not beautiful.
That being said...I don't find Dasom appealing or talented, but hopefully she has improved, because it sounds like a show I could watch.

Beauty is one thing but there is no shortage of beautiful AND talented actresses in korea, even young ones. It's not that rare like you think.
what puzzles many of us is why the beautiful+talented actresses get ignored for lead roles and pds keep choosing pretty but useless excuses for "actresses" like this Dasom.
even in Hollywood, beautiful women have to have some acting talent to survive and make a career. Even Angelina Jolie has an Oscar and Scarlett Johansson has an award for stage acting.
Pretty but useless women in Hollywood don't get big film roles or tv roles, they become irrelevant very quickly if they don't show the talent. like that blond girl from Gossip Girl.

Hmm, well at least it's short so it won't drag. I've heard less than pleasant things about Dasom's acting, but the premise sounds good enough for me to at least check out an episode.

At least the role makes sense. Dasom's not the best actress, but she's not the worst either and I do think she's improving. Plus I can't really complain when they cast idols in roles as idols (or ex-idols), as there are way more ill-fitting roles out there.

That's a different one called All About My Mom (formerly Please Mom). They're both KBS but that one is a Weekender (Which will start after Bluebird House) while this one's Mon-Tue :)

Oooooh, okay, thanks for clarifying that up for me @Jessica :) That's what I initially thought too-- that the drama offered to Eugene is a weekend drama :) I guess my hunch was right!!

The drama sounds like a fun comedy except they cast two terrible actresses for the two female leads. Dasom keeps getting roles for heavens-knows-what, and Go Du-shim isn't any better either. I don't care if she's a veteran, her screaming/agonized/constipated face in High Society drives me insane.
Good writing or not, RSY or not, I'm so out if the two 'actresses' are in.

must be a nice life, being an idol.
There is literally no need to be talented at anything besides posing for a camera, the opportunities will just come flowing in as long as you have a 'pretty' face.

Hate to say it but that's life in general.
Prettier people have it easier. There have been studies done on this many times. The more beautiful you are, the easier society is to you.

Beauty and young is one thing. But in this case I think producer take in consideration of Sistar popularity - hoping to attrack possibly more viewers!
I found Dasom made some troubling comment and dieting, loves views....she made few comments that doesn't sound all that healthy.

Dasom's a hit or miss for me. I thought she did decently well in "Shut Up Family" as the bratty stuck up but moody younger sister. But then I watched her in "Melody of Love" and she came across as more awkward and try-hard with her role as a bubbly happy-go-lucky candy girl.

Dasom got A LOT of criticism for really bad acting in Love Rides the Song. She's not leading material. Check out this article from netizenbuzz.

I'm a sucker for anything musical so I started watching Melody of Love then. I tried to keep up to see if it'll get any better... boy did my brain fry. Dasom's acting only emphasised how lousy the plot was. If this casting holds, think I'm gonna stay away...

I feel so sorry for struggling Korean actresses (not that it is much different in Hollywood). While male actors can still break through with their talent, it seems that female leads are chosensolely based on their looks or industry connections . I wonder how many talented Korean girls are getting pushed aside because they don't fit the beauty standard.
There is a popular opinion that female viewers are really harsh towards female actresses, but I honestly feel that talented there are hardly any talented female leads on Korean television. Not that talanted women do not exist, they are just not given any opportunities. Every second leading role is offered to an idol.
