Su Ae considers sports movie about national women’s hockey team
by girlfriday
Yay, Take Off (National Team) is getting a sequel! I love the original, a 2009 movie starring Ha Jung-woo as a ski-jumper who helps form a national team in the sport and takes a group of lovable misfits all the way to the Winter Olympics. It’s such a feel-good underdog sports movie that gets you in all the right ways, so I’m excited to hear that they’re finally making a sequel.
National Team 2 (or Take Off 2, if they’re keeping the first English title for the franchise) is going to stick with the Winter Olympics as its backdrop, but this time it’ll be about a women’s hockey team. Badass. They’re currently courting Su Ae (Mask) to headline, which seems like a huge departure for her — she’s a phenomenal actress who’s in her element in melodramas, but doesn’t exactly strike me as a bruiser on the ice.
She did play a brutal assassin spy on Athena though, so I know she’s capable of being athletic. I really enjoy any time she breaks from the traditional dramatic roles, so I hope she signs on. I can see the movie being a heartfelt, uplifting mix of Take Off and Korea/As One (another sports movie that made me cry), and maybe we can even get a little sprinkling of The Mighty Ducks in there for fun.
Directing is PD Kim Jong-hyun, of the badass cable miniseries Girl K and the Lee Beom-soo baseball movie Superstar Mr. Gam. Great, now I really want him to pair up with Su Ae for a Girl K-esque action thriller. Make it happen, people!
Su Ae is currently playing the hell out of two characters in SBS’s melodrama Mask, which will run until late July; National Team 2 plans to shoot later this year.

Never saw Take Off but when I read the synopsis it made me think of Cool Runnings.
I just finished watching 9 End 2 Outs and thought she did a fantastic job in that. I could easily see her being a kickass hockey player.

The national hockey-team forming element reminds me of a Bollywood movie called Chak De India (2007), which was actually great.
I'd love to see Su Ae in a hockey movie, if it's as rousing as that.

I luv me some Soo Ae.
I am wary of sports movies and/or dramas though. It is so so hard to make it realistic.
Lack of realism is distracting and makes for bad feels. Its also not necessary most of the time (although it is hard to see in this case how they avoid making Soo Ae into a skater chick if her character is a skater chick).
also love GF <3

My mind keeps boggling trying to imagine Su Ae as a tough, sweaty, jock. I want it to happen, but I can't quite picture it.

LOVE her. And yeah she kicked ass and looked good doing it in Athena. I know it will take forever for this film to be available for us, but in the mean time National Team 1 with Ha jung-woo sounds like a winner.

They're busy filming. My daughter-in-law's little sister has a bit part as one of the NK team members. She had to cut her long hair but was philosophical about it. She reports that 오달수 is a very nice, funny man.
