Kill Me, Heal Me: Episode 19

Healing can be a difficult process, but it’s always better when you don’t have to go through it alone. Do-hyun and Ri-jin are reunited at last, and woe to any who would try to part them again. They are determined to piece together the truth of their past, no matter what remains hidden or how it may change them. The showdown for Seungjin Group draws ever closer, and while the past gives up its secrets one by one, the future grows murkier than ever.

EPISODE 19 RECAP

Chief Ahn stands guard in the hallway outside Do-hyun’s new office, until a noise from inside draws his attention. He enters the office, where Do-hyun and Ri-jin are embracing and giggling like a pair of high-school sweethearts.

The chief reprimands Do-hyun for being so careless in the office, with hostile eyes and ears all around. The shareholders’ meeting is approaching, and Do-hyun has to be at his most focused. Chief Ahn tells Ri-jin to wait at the apartment.

Ri-jin tries to sneak out of the office, but runs into Ki-joon on the way out. He recognizes her immediately, in spite of her spy shades.

Ki-joon reminds Ri-jin of how they met, joking that they must have been fated to meet again. But he soon reveals his true motive by asking Ri-jin to take his side in the next shareholders’ meeting. If she does, he will make sure she receives the stocks she’s entitled to by birth.

Ri-jin informs him that she hates taking sides, so they have nothing more to talk about. Ki-joon tries to get her to stay, but Ri-jin says she no longer works at the company and that she can leave whenever she wants.

Ki-joon’s secretary searches for a locker that can be opened by Alex’s key. If the information they find is useful, Ki-joon will authorize more money to be sent to Alex in return for knowledge of Do-hyun’s weakness.

Do-hyun finds Alex’s hotel room, where his former friend wakes up after a night of binge drinking, still bloody from Se-gi’s harsh treatment. Alex demands payment, while Do-hyun says it’s partly his fault that Alex ended up this way. Instead of paying him to keep his mouth shut, Do-hyun should have simply punched him and moved on—maybe then Alex wouldn’t have fallen into gambling and drugs.

Now Do-hyun refuses to pay up. “If you expose my secret,” he tells Alex, “I’ll come back and punch you. Because you’re still my friend.”

But once he leaves the hotel room, Do-hyun tells Chief Ahn to settle Alex’s gambling debts and arrange for him to enter rehab. He doesn’t think of it as paying Alex off or getting him out of the way, but rather as a way of atoning for past mistakes by giving Alex a chance to get his life back on track.

Ki-joon receives a call from Alex, who gives him the location of the locker. Ki-joon’s secretary finds it and uses the key to open it… but there’s nothing there.

At the apartment, Chief Ahn reveals that Alex changed his mind at the last moment, so he was able to clear out the locker before Ki-joon’s secretary got to it. The locker had contained a set of movies that all featured multiple personalities, which definitely would have been enough to tip off Ki-joon.

Now that Do-hyun has a little breathing room, Chief Ahn urges him to find some weakness they can use to attack Ki-joon’s side at the shareholders’ meeting. Do-hyun wants everything to be aboveboard, however; he wants to win his own way, not his grandmother’s. At that moment a call comes in with news that makes Do-hyun rush outside right away.

The man who called has news about Min Seo-yeon’s car accident, which may not actually have been an accident. The driver on the day of the crash was new, and even though Grandpa and Seo-yeon were supposedly heading to the airport with all possible haste, the site of the crash was in the suburbs—not directly on the way to the airport.

Chief Ahn reminds Do-hyun that he shouldn’t believe their informant completely without further confirmation. Still, Do-hyun wonders who had the most to benefit should the president and the chairman of Seungjin Group suddenly pass away.

Do-hyun’s mom visits her husband in his hospital room, and apologizes for using him. She is relieved now that Do-hyun has returned to the company, but she urges Joon-pyo to wake up so he can stand by Do-hyun’s side.

Do-hyun meets with Grandma Seo, who knows he has been looking into the car accident. She admits that there were many rumors flying around after the accident, but denies having had anything to do with it. Grandma changes the topic to the shareholders’ meeting, telling Do-hyun that they have a new ally who happens to be waiting just outside. The door opens, revealing Chae-yeon. Meanwhile, Ki-joon receives some paperwork from an American company, concerning Do-hyun’s medical records.

Chae-yeon tells Do-hyun what she offered Grandma Seo in exchange for her support. It was a cheap way to try to win Do-hyun back, but she says it was his fault for playing with her heart first. Do-hyun admits that he loves someone else, and finally tells Chae-yeon the truth. At the same time that Chae-yeon staggers down the stairs, shocked by the truth, Ki-joon reads the report revealing that Do-hyun has D.I.D.

At the family restaurant, Ri-jin receives a call from Do-hyun. He asks her to tell him again that she likes him, and Ri-jin puts up only a token protest before complying. “I miss you,” Do-hyun says.

Just like that, Ri-jin is packing up her things and leaving the restaurant, even though the sun is already down. Mom asks her to reconsider working for her mystery chaebol again, but Ri-jin only says that she’s lucky to have such a great base camp she can return to any time. She hugs Mom tightly, while Dad badgers her to hug him too.

Ri-on is uncharacteristically somber as he drives Ri-jin to Do-hyun’s apartment, telling her to keep her eyes straight ahead when she gives him a worried look. They reach the apartment and see Do-hyun, waiting in his little folding chair.

Ri-jin teases Do-hyun that he should install a bench in front of his apartment, since he always ends up sitting there. Ri-on arrives with Ri-jin’s luggage, but Do-hyun asks him to have a drink before he goes.

The two men share a drink, and Do-hyun apologizes for not keeping his promise to stay away from Ri-jin. “How can I blame you when my own sister was an accomplice?” Ri-on replies. He aks Do-hyun to think about the strange fate that connects the two of them to Ri-jin: If Seungjin Group had accepted her into the family, then it might have been Do-hyun who grew up seeing Ri-jin like a sibling.

But it was Ri-on, and so he had to make a difficult decision. He chose to become the world’s best brother, because that’s who Ri-jin needed most. Ri-on asks Do-hyun to look after Ri-jin from now on, and to keep her from getting hurt.

Ri-on walks alone along the street, remembering all the moments he tried to help Ri-jin. He starts to cry as he thinks of all the hardships she went through, while he could only support her as a brother. “I can do that for you,” he says in voiceover. “I’ll only be your brother.”

Do-hyun wanders back to his apartment, and this time Ri-jin is outside waiting for him. He sits next to her and surprises her by speaking in banmal. When she asks why he’s suddenly speaking like Se-gi, he replies that they were already friends many years ago, and they should speak however they feel like in the moment.

“I miss you,” Do-hyun whispers. Even when they’re together, he misses her. No matter what happens, he says, they have to be happy. Ri-jin smiles and lays her head down on his shoulder.

Ri-jin and Do-hyun meet with Dr. Seok, who is pleased to hear that they both have a rough understanding of what happened in the past, as well as the sources of most of Do-hyun’s personalities. He lists possibilities for long-term treatment, but Do-hyun and Ri-jin prefer to work together, matching their piecemeal memories and supporting each other.

Dr. Seok believes that this method may work, and then hilariously chides his student and former patient for being so obvious about holding hands in public. But in the end, he gives them his blessing.

Do-hyun and Ri-jin meet in his office for a consultation, where Ri-jin says that there’s no need to remove the personalities by force. They’re all part of Do-hyun, so he should simply accept himself as he is and match his memories together. Do-hyun agrees, but asks Ri-jin to start by sharing what she remembers.

Ri-jin remembers her first birthday after her mother passed away, when Do-hyun brought her a cake and a sparkler (I guess he always had a thing for fire…) and sang her Happy Birthday. He promised to take her to see the fireworks. That birthday became the happiest memory she had after realizing that her mother was never going to come back and take her away.

Do-hyun shares a memory of his own, from the days immediately after he had returned to the mansion. He didn’t know how to live in such a fancy place, and was often scolded for things like failing to memorize his multiplication tables. But Ri-jin was kind to him, setting up a picnic on the lawn where they could play house. Ri-jin placed her stuffed bear next to them—it was supposed to be their child, named Na-na.

In the present, Do-hyun thinks of something he wants to do. He invites Ri-jin to come with him, to a place where they can do what they always wanted to do as children.

Do-hyun and Ri-jin sit together on a carnival ride at the amusement park. For a moment, they see their younger selves waving at them, and Do-hyun waves back.

In the gift shop, Ri-jin looks around for presents she can give to Do-hyun’s personalities. She thinks about a new bear for Na-na, a model boat for Perry Park with his name across the side, and a diary for Yo-sub to write his poems in. She complains about Yo-na’s personality while picking out a pink headband, and asks Do-hyun what kind of present Se-gi might want.

The two of them walk around outside, visiting the carriage where Se-gi first kissed Ri-jin during the fireworks show. Ri-jin reflects that Se-gi has the worst emotional scar out of all the personalities, and Do-hyun says that unless Se-gi is able to let out his rage towards his father and Seungjin Group, he will never be able to disappear. Ri-jin asks what kind of father Joon-pyo was.

Do-hyun explains about the origin of the Perry Park persona, and how his resentment towards his father is mixed with his yearning for the time when he loved his father. Ri-jin asks him which is stronger—the resentment Se-gi carries, or the yearning embodied by Perry Park?

Do-hyun only asks how Ri-jin can be so calm, when she has every right to hate Joon-pyo with all her heart. While Ri-jin was terrified when her memories first started coming back, after a while she only felt empty.

Do-hyun knows that as long as Ri-jin suffers even a little bit from what his father did to her, Se-gi will always be liable to strike back. The only way for them both to move on is to forgive the perpetrator. In a hospital somewhere in Seoul, Joon-pyo’s fingers twitch suddenly.

Back at the apartment, Perry Park finds that someone has bought him a gift. He tests his new fishing rod with an expression of pure bliss, but that’s not all—Ri-jin has brought chicken and beer. Not just any beer, mind you, but her father’s best brew, the kind that Perry failed to taste last time.

Now Perry drinks to his heart’s content, and asks Ri-jin to tell her father that out of all the beers Perry Park has tasted during his life, this is the best. Ri-jin wonders why Perry is speaking as though he’s going away, and Perry replies that he’s the oldest of all the personalities, so he should set a proper example.

Ri-jin asks Perry why he tried so hard to save her during the Leather Jacket Incident. Was it because he felt guilty for not being able to save her from the fire twenty-one years ago? Perry scoffs, but not very convincingly. Then he says he has one final message to give Ri-jin before he leaves.

“Please take care of my kid,” Perry says. He feels confident that he can leave now, because he trusts Ri-jin to look after Do-hyun. And he asks Ri-jin to forget about the past and enjoy her life. He adopts as serious a tone as we’ve ever heard when he tells her to stay healthy.

“Maybe one more glass,” Perry muses now that he’s had his say, but as he reaches for the beer his head starts to hurt. He manages one last smile at Ri-jin and says he’s feeling sleepy, then falls face-first onto the table. Ri-jin starts crying in earnest, calling out to Perry.

We see Perry Park embarking on a journey in Do-hyun’s mind, armed with his fishing gear. He opens a door, and once the blinding light fades, he finds himself on a dock stretching out over the water, with a boat moored at the end. Perry salutes the boat which bears his name and smiles, while a single tear falls down his cheek.

Do-hyun wakes up, and Ri-jin lets him know that Perry Park has come and gone for the last time. He left Do-hyun a final message, that he should live freely. Those words remind him of what his father told him, before Seungjin Group tore the family apart.

Do-hyun’s mother has a drink with Grandma Seo, admitting that she’s had trouble sleeping since learning about Do-hyun’s affliction. She tells Grandma that she understands now how painful it must have been to see her son in a coma for all those years. Mom finally reveals her real reason for seeking out Grandma: Do-hyun has met with Min Seo-yeon’s child.

A shadowy figure sneaks into Ri-jin’s bedroom in the night. The next morning, Ri-jin and Do-hyun examine something strange in the living room. Chief Ahn arrives, saying that the cameras caught Do-hyun sneaking around just before dawn. “Could it be?” they gasp, staring at each other in horror. “The appearance of a new personality?!” The spray-painted X on the wall is their only reply.

COMMENTS

And the mysterious Mr. X has arrived! There has been a lot of speculation about who he might be or what he might want, and now we’ll simply have to wait until the finale to find out. I love that the show kept a new personality in reserve for the final episode, because it ramps up our expectations for something beyond the Shareholders’ Meeting of Doom.

We have always known that there would be a Seungjin Group showdown near the end of the show—all of the family maneuvering couldn’t end any other way. But for me, the appeal of the show from the very first episode derived from Do-hyun juggling both internal and external conflicts. For that reason, I’m very happy to see that even as Do-hyun’s alters seem to be settling down, with some even moving on, a new one has appeared out of nowhere to restore some much-needed tension.

We’re very close to the end of the wonderful journey that has been Kill Me, Heal Me, as hard as it is to admit it to myself. I could watch Yo-na and Se-gi wreak havoc for a lot longer than they did without getting tired of it, but then all good things must come to an end. And if at all possible, it’s best to go out with a bang (metaphorically, of course—Perry doesn’t do that sort of thing anymore).

A lot of loose ends were tied up well in this episode, without feeling as if they’ve been handled too neatly. Ri-on achieved some measure of closure with his conversation with Do-hyun, even though we see that his decision doesn’t mean his pain disappears. Whether you found his struggle compelling or not, I think it’s hard to imagine anyone bowing out with more class.

We also see the end of Do-hyun’s desire to fight through everything on his own, and I for one couldn’t be happier. Of course his problems don’t resolve themselves immediately, nor should we expect them to. His memories are coming back, little by little, now that he’s trying to piece them together with Ri-jin. It will no doubt be a long process, but we can rest a little easier now that they’ve actually started.

Last episode, Ri-on said something that stuck with me. He was talking to Ri-jin about Do-hyun’s personalities, and why they seemed to be hovering around Ri-jin even though Do-hyun had determined to stay away. For Ri-jin, thinking as a psychologist, it was probable that Do-hyun was merely under a lot of stress. But Ri-on would rather think like a writer, and that approach led him to think that Do-hyun’s personalities were doing their best to bring Do-hyun and Ri-jin together.

I think the show as a whole does a wonderful job of balancing medical fact and emotional truth, and making sure that emotion always has the upper hand. We can find closure and solace in narrative, and we don’t have to limit ourselves to clinical reports or professional advice. That’s why we can be overjoyed rather than disturbed by a doctor falling for her patient, and why Do-hyun and Ri-jin can reject Dr. Seok’s list of options for long-term treatment—they would rather help each other, thank you very much. Bad science? Probably. But does it make for a better story? I think so.

And now that it’s time for me to finish up my final recap for Kill Me, Heal Me, there’s really only one thing I have to say: R.I.P., Perry Park. Whatever happens in the finale, I’ll feel better knowing that you are out there sailing the seas of eternity, carefree and happy in the ship that bears your name. So long, Perry—you will be missed.

Oh Perry's good-bye was the best and the worst thing I have ever sobbed through. The pair were so good at the pain of farewell - JS not taking his gaze away from HJE as PP was being pulled away forever.

JS mentioned in his interview that that scene was particularly emotional for him. You could tell, too.

Oh, THE FEELS!!!
Such fantastic way to start off finale week.
The end of Ri On's story was handled so beautifully, and like purplecow said, with such class, it couldn't have been done any other way.
Even Perry's goodbye...I bawled like a baby. It was so perfect, so true to Perry as a character. I'll be happy imagining him relaxing on the deck of his boat, fishing and drinking his beer.
I was hoping they'd leave the accident, to be...well, an accident, but in for a penny, in for a pound, I suppose.
That minor quibble aside, I think Liar Game is the only show I've seen so far that I've loved so consistently. Bravo, dramaland. You did good.

And we definitely gravitate towards similar shows xD I really adore this show as well! (In fact, I think it bumped Liar game out of the park, seeing how much more heart it has :P though Liar game wins in terms of how tight the show was)

I think both are such awesome shows for different reasons. I've only been watching dramas for about two years now, and these two were probably the first two which didn't disappoint me in any way right through.

I loved the scene with Perry, and found it incredibly moving. It's a beautiful example of a writer setting up a moment with what seem like inconsequential details and then delivering a powerful payoff. It works because it's not really a scene about Perry and chicken and boats. It's about Ri Jin tellingD

Pretty heart wrenching to know that Perry Park was the love of a child for his father that he desperately wanted to keep alive inside of him and just as hard to see him let that love go and turn into no more than a memory.

Such a sweet episode as it ramps up for the finale~

I loved the scene in the amusement park, when the younger selves and present day Do-hyun and Ri-jin were able to come to terms... it seemed so healing for them to see the young kids as innocent & lovable and for them to reflect that their grown-up selves were capable and loving...

and I liked the touch with Ki-joon and Chae-yeon. It was a bit meta, like those two were in their own dramas. Ki-joon's meeting with Ri-jin was a setup like any rom-com you know: Chaebol has an accidental run in with a young beautiful girl and takes her to a party (after obligatory make-over montage) to make her rich. Anyhow, it started like that on Ki-joon's end, but Ri-jin was like "uh- no. that's not my story/drama, I gots to go."

And Chae-yeon was always (when she showed up) filming an entirely different 'drama', something melo- where she's torn between her two loves and family machinations with mother-in-laws and so on. So she enters all dramatic, ready to play the power-game and buy people with money etc...and Do-hyun is like "no....actually there's a whole other story that you don't even know about...."

It was mentioned before the shifts in tones of the drama, sometimes action, or comedy and drama and etc - even Ri-on mentions if they are filming a " melo-drama, oh no it's still a sit-com", and the wrap-up for these two characters were exactly that - playing with the different tones & genres and kinda hinting at everyone living their own lives you know? Chae-yeon was living a melodrama, Ki-joon was the 'hero' of his own story.....

yeah that´s what it felt like- Ki Joon and Chae Yeon were from some different realities. they were like characters lost in the wrong fairy tale. The Snow Queen thought she was wraping her hand around a prince, but the prince suddenly turns into the 7 dwarfs and Bluebeard met a Little Red Riding Hood who hurried off to have chicken and beer with the hunter.

yep, agreed. initially i thought ki joon and chae yeon's character was kind of underdeveloped. cuz usually in kdramaland, ki joon's character will probably found out abt DH's DID in earlier episode and who RJ really is and will try to get RJ to fall for him so he can get the company and Chae Yeon will become this evil second female lead who will do anything to get DH to love her and having cat-fight with RJ. lol

Then, in the end, i realizes that Ki Joon and Chae Yeon totally doesn't belong in this story. their story are so different from the whole story that it doesn't fit anywhere even if they try to force-fit their character into the drama, to which the writer didn't, THANK GOD for that.

but if they make a spin-off abt Ki Joon and Chae Yeon's story, I will probably watch it. cuz i think they match each other. maybe they can get Ri On to be in the spin-off too as love rival to Ki Joon. haha

Yesss~~~ Kdramas have had lots of stories where horrible people keep bringing down trouble onto our hero/heroine and the inherent goodness of the heroine meets the perfect assets (physical + financial) of the hero and it's only other crazy people (second leads, or mothers-in-law) that keep them down. The story is drawn out by the crazy.

But this was a refreshing story of someone's childhood hurts and how the adults who grew from that hurt heals and loves and grows and protects <3 (both applicable to Ri-jin and Do-hyun)

@CZ You've said it so well. Ki Joon and Chae Yeon were trying to stir up drama but they were like 5 billion steps behind our OTP. They would've been the classical k-dramaland second leads. I must say, they were quite forgettable. This was not their story, ever. Chae Yeon made her exit in ep 19 never to be seen again while Ki Joon's story meets an abrubt end. All this while we happily wave to them goodbye, thinking "good riddance!".

Also. that part with the amusement ride was so touching. I was waving to the kids too. I'm so up for checkin out the writer's future projects. I'll see ya'll there when the time comes. :)

yup! "This was not their story, ever." !! love that they didn't have a wrap-up conclusion (because in real life, we rarely get wrap ups all at the same time--) but they exited [off stage/screen] because there was nothing more than could do to impact Do-hyun's or Ri-jin's lives.

This is such a great comment! Especially this line, "...kinda hinting at everyone living their own lives you know?"
I feel that's precisely what we've been seeing. They've shown us this world from Dohyun and Rijin's perspective. We've only been seeing their lives. Meanwhile, Chaeyeon and Kijoon live in their own world which interact with Dohyun and Rijin's sometimes, but not only enough for any real impact.
And Chaeyeon was totally living a melodrama, poor thing, though I'm glad she's rid of Kijoon's wrist grabbing and screeching.
Kijoon's probably still pissed that Dohyun not only got Chaeyeon and the company, but rejected them lol.

I agree. But I also like how the drama used Ki Joon and Chae Yeon's characters to show us how differently people would react to certain truths, such as Do Hyun's DID. I also loved Do Hyun's voice over during this particular scene (as Chae Yeon was staggering down the stairs), and how he immediately called Ri Jin to confirm her feelings for him. Because for him, that's the only thing that matters. That she accepts his truth, and that she loves him nevertheless.

It's a beautiful example of a writer setting up a moment with what seem like inconsequential details and then delivering a powerful payoff. It works because it's not really a scene about Perry and chicken and boats. It's about Ri Jin telling Do Hyun it's okay to love the good parts of his father, and that he doesn't have to be condemned to repeat his father's horrors or carry the guilt for his choices. And, on a metaphorical level, it allows Ri Jin a safe space to make her peace with the man who abused her, not because he deserves it, but so that she can move on.

ep 19 seems to be the quietest episode for me. myb cuz we're nearing the end. *sniff*sniff*

i love how the writer didn't 'force' ri jin or do hyun to accept their pain easily and instead give them time to heal, slowly, and together. nor does the writer makes both our leads to forgive the people who causes their pain like so many other drama tend to do when nearing the end, just so they can give us a satisfying ending. it makes this drama seems more... 'human', i think, if it's the right word for it.

Perry Park, so long... I hope you're happy sailing with your new fishing rod and enjoying your life with the freedom you deserved.

Thank you for the recap. Wonderful as always purplecow.

This episode felt very different for me. I wonder how much of it had to do with Ji Sung's voice, or lack there of. It was painful watching him push through especially in Perry Park's scenes. I wonder if part of this episode written to allow Ji Sung screen-time without him needing to speak as much.

Saying good bye to my favorite personalities is hard and only going to get harder in the finale.

Yeah, it's a shame but it's not surprising that Ji Sung's vocal cords got so inflamed, adversely affecting the last two episodes. (Although it certainly could've been a lot worse.) You can hear that his vocal cords were getting strained in the song he sang for the OST. It probably wasn't a good idea for him to have recorded that when he did, given how insanely hard he's had to work all these weeks, but hindsight is 20/20. The problem was more noticeable in ep 20, but even in this one, Perry didn't quite sound himself, and I think there were a lot fewer takes for Ji Sung's scenes. Still, they did a great job making the best of it and I sure hope that JS and his vocal cords are now enjoying some much-needed rest and TLC. *shakes fist at the live-shoot system*

must say, didn´t even notice his voice problems this episode. the difference is not as big or he just compensates so well with other things. too sorry and an feel a little guilty though, the pressure on him was huge, fans demanding this and that, show Yo Na, give us Perry, no, Se Gi... feel like he wanted to answer everyones expectations and then this happened. but you hardly notice it. right?

This episode was so sad but it was so heartwarming. Who cried when Perry left? T-T He was one of my favourite alters. I liked him even more than Yo Na. And this show was so nice as to give us some more Perry time when I begged for it.

*Spoiler-ish* The show really finished with an open ending, which is probably the best way for this type of show. And the loose ends were tied up quite well. But why am I so sad? My Wednesday will be so empty. And plz don't suggest Hyde, Jekyll and Me. I gave up on it at ep 12. On the plus side, Shine or Go Crazy with Jang Hyuk, and Ho Goo's Love pleasantly have the task of filling the void left by KMHM. But they will never compare :( <3 KMHM.

Seeing how I had bawled my eyes out with Perry's departure, I could only foretell that I will fall apart when the others go to their farewell end. Reading this recap and reliving this story's end makes me feel the FEELZ all over again. One hand I am content the misery that Do hyun's had to deal with is now something eased but on the other hand I want to sulk and say to the story 'I don't want you to end' *stomps feet*.

I cried too when Perry left. But I really liked how it was handled.

I had such different expectations at the start of this drama, and I'm glad it turned into a completely different show. I almost didn't even start watching because the synopsis on Dramafever said that his secret physician would be killing off the personalities one by on in order to heal him. Thank goodness the writers didn't read Dramafever's synopsis, haha.

Looking forward to the recap of ep. 20. Loved, loved, loved it. Can't wait to be able to comment more!

Thanks for the recap. I really can't even think about this ep without getting upset. In one way, that was good since I felt that Perry's good-bye for RJ was the most positive.

If you go back and watch the PP/RJ scenes, they really are magic. None of the romantic tension is there that we feel for SSG and CDH. We could say that is the power of wardrobe and saturi, but I have to continually marvel at how these two actors create perfect illusions. The dancing scene really felt like father/daughter moment, and the goood-bye scene, sniff, sniff, too. CDH's love for her just comes bursting out of his body no matter who's personality is talking.

Exactly. If it were PP and RJ who were the main couple, It wouldn't be a romantic drama.

that's where I admire the acting skills of these two people. I think its the way they look at each other, maybe? They just know how to make it non-sexual , rather than a man-woman thing.

I just can't say enough about Ji Sung's acting skills. Really, he's so totally impressed me, that I'm watching dramas that I would never ever watch - like swallow in the sun (I'm fast forwarding through every scene that doesn't have him in it).

Same! Ji Sung's acting is the best. I've only seen him in Protect the Boss before this and was so impressed with him that he made it into my top 10 actors from that alone (RARELY happens for me). After KMHM, he's in my top 2 (he might be my fave, but I can't knock Kim Woo Bin from the top yet...).

I will be watching every. single. thing Ji Sung is in from now on, including his back catalog. I don't care what genre it is or what the plot is. He's in it? I will at least give it a shot.

We laughed at that point, because of the comedy and the accent and the bomb-making....

But Ri-jin pinpoints in this episode exactly why he came out then. It wasn't a fluke (because we needed the funny), it was because this persona was also so very sorry that he had not helped Ri-jin when she was a child, and so he came out to rescue her 20+years later. ....!!!!!!!!!!!!

This show kept deviating, knowingly, from Classic drama tropes which gave it an extra air of mystery. I waited every episode for things I knew would happen and when they didn't I felt so pleasantly surprised and relieved.

Throughout the series:
I just knew that Yona's filmed fight with ORJ would cause problems ... nope.
I just knew Cha Ki Joon was going to get revenge ... nope
I just knew Chae Yeon would force a relationship ... nope
I just knew the parents would find out about CDH and separate them ... nope
I just knew ORO would confess, become 2nd lead and make things super awkward ... nope

Red herrings everywhere. Or the writer ran out of time. I wish the live shooting system didn't exist, then episodes could have more scenes and less padding from slow motion thinking shots, flashbacks and more flashbacks. I like the flashbacks, but sometimes it's obviously not about the narrative and more about lack of footage.

They started shooting this drama 1 month or 3 weeks before the broadcast. Maybe that's why they needed more flashbacks to occupy the remaining time.

But somehow I'm glad that writer nim didn't go there. I think it is a better and clever way to show the story because it made Chaeyeon a character that ties the story together, even if she is seems out of place, instead of a simple device to seperate our OTP. It could be time constraint or spend abit too much screen time on the comedic parts but it is it kept the love line simple between 3 people: Segi-Rijin-Joonyoung. A childhood love and a boy who happens to be in love with her but his family m are responsible for her dark past.

I actually like they didn't go to that usual kdrama plot
this story overall is about do-hyun and rijin uncovering their past with their pov

and do-hyun is not that popular to get trouble with pic
ki-joon actually look like work a lot and
chae yoon never actually understand the situation
the parents truly believe their son and daughter
ri-on is just realize that fate show him the way but his brother love is way more than wanted her as a man

but then if we remove that element in the show, it wasn't complete too
It was like a narrative we heard in many show when they talk about the lead 1st live and all the thing, instead here, they give the scene, to completed do-hyun life

and without CY and KJ, I might not see an epic convers about not holding on 1st love and moved by KJ offer as typical male lead in kdrama
feels like they have their own life and they interact with our OTP

maybe because I watch too many drama with that scene but for me this is one example less is better :)

This!!! I really love this part!!! Exactly my point! It is written to treat us as a smart audience. Most of the time, I really laughed out loud when I watched a drama who thinks that it's alright to obsess with a girl/guy (not even mental) and not doing his/her daily responsibility.

I think sometimes we just too familiar with 2nd lead became hurdle to step up by OTP love of our OTP when actually it can be handle rather simply by one of them, like DH with CY and RJ with KJ

also having high position character that have lot of time to make some fuss about lead personal life when they also need to work

If this kdrama write as story or novel, we may didn't realize they are 2nd lead, they just people in do-hyun's daily life ^.^

The writer also wrote Capital Scandal which gets my vote for one of the most underrated shows I've seen. It's similar to Kill Me, Heal Me in that it also mixes broad comedy with serious themes (in this case, the Japanese occupation of Korea) but it does a lovely job setting up and developing the relationships between its four central characters, and features the best female second lead I've come across in K-drama.

It was, wasn't it? It's the first time I've ever googled a writer. What really impressed me was how she wrote DH's guilt in, making it look like he's the one suffering the physical abuse. I loved that bit. It absolutely fascinated me.

Also, the whole name switch thing. It was pure genius!

Forget about kdramaland, even in bestselling novels its hard to come across twists like these that are so surprising yet totally believable in the context of the show. We're not going, "WTF, how did that happen?" but, "OMG, how did I miss that?"

As usual, I’m left with the question of just where to begin. Besides reiterating just how much I love this show, the actors and characters that is. I’ve never been this lost, this madly in love with a show, weeping in full force during the moments of incredible emotion and depth, laughing out loud during the hilarious parts and left with this sense of joy and effervescent hope, once I was done.
Ri On has been the subject of much speculation since the start of this show. Just who is he? Dohyun’s stalker? An unscrupulous fellow seeking to topple Seungjin group? The child in the basement? Seungjin’s real heir? Dohyun’s rival in love? The man wears many hats, and perhaps that’s why it was so hard to pin his character down at the start. Out of all the characters, I love our leads and Segi the most, but I think Ri On is the most relatable. Earlier, in episode 15’s review I said that Dohyun had to make the same choice Ri On did, upon finding what happened in Rijin’s past. Say nothing and spare her the agony, or tell her and watch her in pain. But there was something extra to Ri On’s choice that Dohyun didn’t have to do. In not telling her of her past, Ri On gave up every chance he had of ever being with Rijin. In hiding the abuse in her past, he hid her parentage and therefore their true blood relationship. So when Dohyun returns to Rijin’s life he’s understandably outraged and heartbroken when she falls for what he considers the root of what happened in her past. Dohyun’s gentle, quiet, responsible nature softens him a bit, but he cannot bring himself to support Rijin’s relationship at times. Yet even then, it takes only a few minutes or hours for him to bring Rijin back, or help Rijin out. Throughout it all, his love for her never wavers. To me, both Dohyun and Ri On love her equally, deeply and greatly. But the one she loves is Dohyun, and that repeated confirmation of that these past two episodes have slowly been tearing Ri On’s heart apart. And things finally come to a head in this episode. The dreaded moment when Ri On has to finally send her away arrives. To drive the woman you’ve loved for so many years to the home of the man she loves is pretty damn painful, and I’m really happy and oddly proud of the way he handled it. But just as wonderful was Dohyun’s handling of the situation. Not only has he been there’s before with Chaeyeon, but he knows that this is worse, seeing how genuine Rijin is to everyone (while Chaeyeon just treated Dohyun nicely because of who he was). Rijin’s made her choice, and they both know it. But Ri On has a great deal of heartache to deal with, and Dohyun’s acknowledging that. This wasn’t one of those macho rituals where Ri On was passing Rijin onto Dohyun with a “take care of her”. This was a “Hey, you did your best” sort of drink. A sort of “I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you. I know it could just as easily have been me she was rejecting”. It was that sort of meeting and parting.
But the possibilities and...

Required fields are marked *

But the possibilities and pain are going to torment Ri On for a long, long time. Just as with every one of us, when something we yearn for slips out of our grasp, we all go “what if?” and we all think of how closer we might have been (as seen in his flashback of the warm times and joyous moments they spent together). But in the end, we have to deal with the fact that it’s not in our grasp anymore, that it was never in our grasp. And that hollow ache takes a while to fade, which is why I’m grateful for every moment we got to see Ri On’s pain fully manifest itself. The man wears many hats, as I said earlier and there’s no doubt that he’s going to wear the Best Big Brother Ever one from now on, hiding his pain behind the mask of a smile just as he hid his identity as Omega for so many years. It’s a long road Ri On-ah, and not an easy one either, but someday that ache will slowly begin to diminish until it vanishes completely.
Onto Rijin and Dohyun who are just the cutest couple EVER. From all that hand-holding in Dr. Seok’s office to all that giggling and romancing in Dohyun’s office (poor Ahn Guk is eternally scarred!) to puppy Dohyun and Rijin waiting for their respective other halves to come home, my cheeks ache from grinning. They are such perfect people together and apart, I honestly can’t even. I could go on and on about their couple dynamic about how well they talk things through honestly and this immense aura of quiet joy that surrounds then, but I think that’s obvious.
That moment when they get their childhood selves out of the basement was sheer beauty. The child actors are brilliant here as well, effervescently playing and building off and with Ji Sung and Hwang Jungeum. When they linked hands, you could just feel their older counterparts standing there and doing the same. The children are finally free of the basement, and their smiles shine brightly. That scene needed no words. From Ji Sung’s beautiful OST playing in the background, the joy in the children’s eyes to the sorrow and quiet memory in Dohyun and Rijin’s, I could go on and on about the beauty of that moment, of that farewell to their shared pain but I’d never do it justice. I’ve never seen joy, sorrow and love come alive so tangibly before. Bravo writer-nim, Ji Sung, Hwang Jung Eum, and the wonderful child actors. I haven’t cried that hard in a while. Thank you for allowing me to see something so special. I’m truly grateful.
Going on with confronting and moving out of their pasts, comes the inevitable goodbye to the alters. As much as I wish they could live on forever, the more I found out about just where these alters came from, and what memories and actions they were rooted in, the more I was sure that Dohyun confronting these memories would mean the death of the other personalities. it goes to show just how broken Dohyun was that he’d create a personality of his father as one of his alters, and just how well written this show is, for Perry’s farewell to be Rijin’s...

Required fields are marked *

...Rijin’s closure. The advice he gave her was truly well delivered, in signature Perry-style. No more melodrama, move on and go forth. And technically, it was thanks to him in episode 18 that that all came about. To Perry all the alters are his children, and this time he’s going to be a good example and leave now that Dohyun isn’t going to be in pain anymore. Rijin knows just what this means for him, and for all the alters, and I love how she felt every bit of Perry’s pain when he reached for that drink and couldn’t have it. He deserved that farewell, and for him to do so after giving Rijin and Dohyun so much closure, is beautiful.
Ji Sung, Ji Sung, Ji Sung, you’ve ruined me for all other actors. Where do alters go when they die? Technically they aren’t even real people so we can’t debate about heaven. But wherever it is, it has a boat with his name on it, and as Perry Park leaves on his final vacation (from which he may never return, to quite Bilbo Baggins) I hope it takes him to seas and locales unknown with fish, and enough beer to bring down a nation. *salutes* Bon voyage.

I'm just surprised on how the writer makes Perry Park the 'desire' of CJP. And the bomb. My guess is that CJP is a 'ticking bomb', waiting to explode once he lost his freedom. Everything is so toughtfully written, I couldn't praise more.

Everyone is free to express our opinion and I never said anything insulting about KMHM fans, so fan-war avoided :P I'm only talking about my opinion if the drama itself so it is not wrong for me to express my opinion after watching to episode 19 without once ever commenting. I can tell you that I had a lot to say in it's earlier episodes but I refrained from doing that to let everyone enjoy the drama. 0

Exactly my point! Why bother writing a rather long opinion about some drama he/she claims is not good? I don't see the point at all.

0

Well it is called a 'personal opinion' for a reason. For you maybe you find it bothersome to express your opinion on something you don't like, for others they just feel in the minority and have always wondered whether this opinion of theirs is just themselves and they may feel alone. By expressing your opinion, you no longer feel alone and it is human nature to just express an opinion and to talk/communicate. You may not see the point, but I do, so there shouldn't be problem with that. How is it wrong to say something you don't like? If you don't like something, you are free to say it, nothing wrong with that (just as long as it doesn't attack others personally), it's called freedom of speech.

0

I watched pinocchio, I'd give it a 5/10. still I think your comment is relevant, if a show bores you why not say it? Why not compare to one you actually liked? (Methinks the lead couple in pinocchio was spectacular, but the plot was a bit forced and repetitive, here both the leads and the writing was good, so my subjective opinion is that kmhm is more original and keeps you in suspense. But still thans for your input, fellow drama lover!

Thanks for seeing this from my perspective wildfly :) yep if a show bores you and you gave it a chance and watch it all the way to episode 19, why not say it? Everyone has their different tastes, this drama is not my type but I'm staying and watching it all the way to the end because all my friends are watching it too. This is the only currently airing drama I am watching now after Pinocchio so I'm only comparing it to the mist recent drama I have watched. And for me, Pinocchio was the best drama I have watched so far in all my years of watching kdramas. I'm not even a PSH or LJS fan but came into that drama because once again it's my friends who are into it. I gave Pinocchio a 10/10 and after it ended I didn't feel like watching anything else as it ruined all other dramas for me. Just happens that KMHM was the drama I watched next. Depending in it's ending I'll either rate it as a 5 or 6 after watching the episode tonight because I can see it's not a bad drama so it still gets a pass mark from me. Just not to my tastes. Thanks for appreciating my comments :)

Accepting a difference of opinion is rather a welcoming sight for me. I know what you mean so I am careful with just expressing my opinion only and not say anything about its fans or those watching the drama. I wouldn't want to start a fan-war. Opinions should be freely expressed imo.

Well for me I like the subtlety in the relationship that was portrayed in Pinocchio. It has a rather natural feel to it than the OTP here. I agree with what you said about my tastes, you are right - it is a little wild for me. But then again, there many who love this spontaneity and wildness - it keeps the show refreshing for them! Each to our own tastes :)

0

For the record, just like in some other generally-respectful fandoms, there has been a small percentage of KMHM fans who've lashed out at people with a different opinion. I feel especially sorry that purplecow got a bashing for offering some constructive criticsm in a recent recap. (I hope you didn't take it to heart, purplecow.) But yes, it's wonderful that the majority of fans are positive, respectful, and tolerant of other opinions.

I, too, very much appreciate it when fans are accepting of a different POV. For many of us, dramabeans is a sort of online home, and who wants to live in a toxic environment where people are sniping at each other all the time? We all want to be heard, and it's natural that there will be disagreements, so it's important for us to be mindful of how we say what we want to say. Sometimes, a comment really makes me mad, and I have an impulse to respond sarcastically or to take a jab at the comimenter in another way, but I generally refrain from responding until I can find a way to do so that's more mature. (More of a Cha Do-hyun delivery than a Shin Se-gi one, although the content may be very Se-gi-ish.)

Pinnocchio_lover, you made a good point about avoiding the escalation of conflict by taking care to express an opinion without making it personal. It's that classic advice for positive communication: Make "I" statements. For example, some commenters put others down who disagreed with them about whether or not the flashbacks in KMHM were too repetitive, which made the forum less enjoyable for many of the rest of us. Saying something like "I didn't find the flashbacks to be boring-- I thought they each presented new insights and added to the narrative" without criticizing the other person is a much more positive way to contribute to the discussion. A little respect goes a long way.

0

Thanks for your 2 cents on this matter, I highly agree with you there...a little respect goes a long way. If we don't like something and want to express our opinion of it, always use "I" to keep it as your own opinion without involving others.

I too also feel sorry for purplecow who got bashed for giving her constructive criticism. I witness this happening too with KMHM fans lashing out on Kolorful Palette and OT too (I won't go into details here). I have not watched said drama being attacked, but I was sitting on the sidelines sipping my tea while all these happened. I admit it was rather amusing for me but I guess not nice for those involved. But majority of fans I found are lovely, respectful and tolerant. I always respect those who accept other's differences of opinions. We meet different people everyday in our lives and there will always be differences of opinions. Wouldn't life be boring if everyone agrees on the same things all the time? Each person's opinion makes us all unique.

...hmm havent seen pinocchio yet..i hear your voice is my first and last of LJS drama..and its my fave bec of his portrayal(good acting) and the villain(great acting) is really scary..hahahah come to think of it..i am more fascinated w/ good acting..if i cant feel the character that much..i cant appreciate the whole drama even its well written,...if the character of the leads have less impact to me, i tend to forget it easily..lol im maybe in a minority, im really have a unique preference..

what happen in bali were i fascinated w/ jo in sung portrayal..i havent seen his acting again w/ so much intensity in TWTWB and IOTL..i cant blame him bec it his character..among the 3,WHIB still remain in my memory..but its not my fave..its still tragic aigoo~

and thats i love w/ kmhm..i cant easily forget his character…he put so much effort..and he bring the characters into life...even HJE w/ her crying scenes, so much emotions..even PSJ his great too..kmhm is so much heart...and so it will remain in my memory for a long time..even its imperfection(repetitive scenes, and lack of story in the other characters),i still love it..

*pass me tissue paper*

Oh my gawd. I just love the Perry Park's departure. I am not a emotional person watching drama but I cried my eyes out when I was watching that scene. It sincerely felt like he is the first to go if there is a war happening in his body and I'm so glad Writer nim gave him the freedom he wanted- a fish rode and a perry park and send him off to his Aruba. :')

As for Chaeyeon, I see it coming and I'm glad our Do Hyun told her his secret. It would have turn the table around if she have been accepting that part of him, even though we know she won't.

Doctor Seok is so funny but I find the scene is needed. His approval is kinda required for Rijin to stay professional in her career.

As for rion, did writer nim actually hear my chant on how much I need him to find closure. HAHAHAH. Writer nim you are the best. For me, I knew his love for Rijin is not going to be fruitful but seeing how wonderful Rion is, I felt, "man, this guy need his closure".

As for Mr x, I was like REALLY!!! Last epsiode is really short to appear!!!

These last two episodes were so hard to watch. T__T I could barely see through my tears when Perry Park left, but his send-off was perfect. Ultimately he wasn't even a real character, but I think for all of us, he's still somewhere out there, sailing that ship and fishing and drinking every day to his heart's content. :')

The carnival ride scene was a lovely moment too. Quiet, sensitive, and beautifully understated.

Also, I've never been a fan of the fauxcest plotline, but Ri-On's ending to his journey in this episode was surprisingly poignant for me. So bittersweet, so well-done.

Ah! Perry! I'm gonna miss you :(

I really appreciate that the writer gave me a scene where DH is drunk and acts just like Se Gi. I just love Se Gi so much that seeing him in DH makes me happy.

I'm glad they wrapped the CY thing neatly, swiftly and firmly. The writer knows where NOT to spend time.

Sigh! Perry!

Also, about Ji Sung... I'm so glad he took the part.

I like Hyun Bin, But he has a very manly face. I think he was perfect for Secret garden, where the contrast between his looks vs his behaviour was needed.

But I don't see him acting like Ahn Yo Na and giving that same school girl vibe that Ji Sung gives out.

Oh Gosh! I have to stop thinking about Ji Sung. I think I'm obsessed!

YES I'm so so happy that Ji Sung ended up with this role. I completely agree about Hyun Bin's face - Ji Sung's face is more delicate, which really helps to emphasise Cha Do-hyun's vulnerability, as well as Yo-sub and Yo-na's youth. It's been 20 episodes of switching and changing, but I'm STILL in awe of how adept Ji Sung is at manipulating his face LOL. I still remember the very first time Ahn Yo-sub made his appearance, and I'd literally only just seen one close-up shot of his face, but I'd already guessed that it was Yo-sub. And that was all because of Ji Sung's acting. HE'S SO GOOOOD.

Perry! That scene made the liquid spill from my eyes. I have no words.

I feel like Perry was what he felt his father could/should have been.

I'm still feeling raw over this episode.

Another really good episode.Although the doctor-patient thing upset me at first, as Dr. Seok said, their fates are so extraordinarily entwined that it became much easier to accept. Plus the fact that they knew each other since childhood and are cause and effect of each other helped things too.

The fauxcest thing still bother me as I still think it was unnecessary.I mean who needs a third lead when there's already Se Gi?! But I'm glad that we didn't have to see his confession at least.

And lastly, as other commentators have mentioned, the farewell scene of Perry was emotionally strong and moving. JS made me cry again.

Throughout the show, I didn't really get teary eyed like many others here did. It was up to the scene which I realised Perry was the father that CDH yearned and wanted then the tears came. Soooo sad..
