Hi there
at work and working late so using the opportunity of a slow hour to take a nap. it has been slow, slow slooow in the museum. trying not to doze off in front of visitors. maybe if I do, I wake up with a different personality... would make life more interesting. I´ll be quick, before the evil, rude, impolite me takes over:
watching: Kill Me, heal Me, of course! The episodes were more quiet (less Se gi), but that style of humor just rules. Punch! hits the right spot, so sharp and instant! OMG Yo Na, I thought I was gonna die. It was good there was only a few minutes of her, if it were more we would all just... keel over. I loved the meaningful conversations this time, and Ri On is ...how did he think THAT would be better than...no, I mean... uh...it was your mom. well ok it did the job didnt it. Chae Yeon is the most unnecessary character ever. hope it gets better when she meets Se Gi... but to be honest, she is not even annoying, just a boring crumbled biscuit
I stopped even reading recaps of Healer. some fantasy of a bored housewife. but Hyde, Jekyll is worse -like it is written by a teenager without a grasp over her material. both seem more like fanfiction.
took a look at some old dramas that have been mentioned a lot like Que Sera sera - edgy, intelligent, cutting, but perhaps a little annoying. Also, because of Ji Sung, FINALLY watched Secret. got a little repetative. there were some really GREAT moments and some weird. Second lead guy only ever had one expression on his face. ff-d all his scenes. very unbalanced cast.
Lately, I have been unhating second female leads. cause the real problem is great actresses forced to play boring, same type characters, that are a humiliation and mockery to anyones´skill. I think I might be becoming a feminist. Make the second leads different or leave them out all together. there should be enough conflict in the leads´ own life and choices. give actresses more original roles, please! they don´t deserve to play the same old unoriginal bitch.
Todays question: if you were a drama character, what would your typical daily schedule look like (depending on what type of character you are of course: Are you a hard working Candy, a nice struggling young talent (second lead), a chaebol, a secretary, a detective... a doctor?). is it packed with meetings and time-tight, or flexible and slow? any morning rituals? what would you do in the evening? what drama tropes does your schedule include?
what do you spend the most time on? how long does it take to get ready and dress - careful formal wear, casual, sloppy?
I am not patient enough to be a secretary or something like that, but I guess I would wake up at 10 am cause I was brooding all night in the shower because I dont have abs like the broody guys in dramas do. Well I do, but they are no abs of steel.
then I try to smooth my wrinkled skin from staying under running hot water too long. Granny calls and yells at me, so I forget to comb...
continued: Granny calls and yells at me, so I forget to comb my hair and look adorably messy going out. I get dressed in under 2 minutes, but go back to change, cause the weather changed, i got 2 drops of rain on me, and I don´t want to catch a fever.
Then I want to have breakfast at my best friends´restaurant, being the only client they ever have, but I am late for my part time job. I get sacked as soon as I arrive. I head to the street, feeling down and nearly get hit by the truck of doom, but a handsome stranger saves me. of course he is either my long lost brother. next on schedule is about a dozen uneaten lunches with a friend, a colleague, another lunch with a reporter who wants to know why my long lost now a chaebol brother he or me dont know is my brother saved me. all the food is left on the table and nobody pays for it, so next stop - police station where I have to explain how the bowl of noodles ended up on the head of the restaurant owner. so some kneeling would be on the schedule but I remember another part time job and run away, offending the restaurant ahjussi further and also b most timeecoming a wanted person, which of course gets me sacked from that other job. I start going to the Han river, then remember it is never a good idea to go to Han river and go to sing karaoke instead, getting myself a very ugly makeover before that. I wake up next morning next to a stranger and discover myself married....and then I REALLY wake up and I am still in the noraebang having fell asleep. of course my long lost brother is in the other room, he piggybacks me home, discovers a childhood picture on the wall, recognizes me as his sister and gives me all his fortune and the position of a CEO and moves to Ibiza to party and make art, finally free from marrying a variation of prickly princesses named Chae Yeon. Like 8 of them. I use my new position to promote eco-friendly shopping, recycling and looking pensive on a balcony at least 3 hours a day.
see, it pays off to sleep in.
so what will you be doing as a drama character? does anyone want to be my secretary cause I am really probably the worst CEO ever. you´d have a 24/7 schedue though.
also, the exhibition Textile 100 *deep breath* OMG my tapestry is next to this famous work that won grand prix in Paris World Expo 1937 and all the big names right around me, I was in such disbelief that I had to hold a hand on my mouth to not squeel and just hug random people even though I hate hugging. I feel it is too much, I am embarrassed for my humble little tapestry. But it is still like the coolest thing ever. but I am scared! that someone will say it has no place net to star.
also, there was a bunch of "scientists" in the museum and one american lady asked if estonians came from Finland in 1918 and established the country, and where exactly is the Baltic Sea - somewhere between Latvia and Estonia? my gosh... oh she also asked it it was during the sexual revolution of the 1960ies that we...
she also asked it it was during the sexual revolution of the 1960ies that we regained independence. phhhf why during sexual revolution? it is like she thinks estonians were horny savages oppressed by morally chaste commies. I said, no, it was when Soviet Union collapsed. actually a little before. and then she says: I somehow thought it still existed in some form...the Soviet Union. Isn´t it now part of Ukraine? WTF. I hope she was just joking, cause otherwise I really don´t know.
+1 KILL ME HEAL ME RECAP WHERE are you!!!!!!!! too.
If you were a drama character, what do you spend the most time on? -reading dramabeans half of time, work (desk job) half of time, just what I do in real life.
and here is my question of this week-
What was your favorite scene this week? Mine was the ending scene of Punch. How awesome husband and wife team looked, looking down in the glass elevator!
I would be an Ahjumma who runs a Banchan shop. I love to cook and helping the customers have successful and healthy meals would really satisfy me. I would also love that my shop was not essential, so I could close up on nice days and go to beach or the mountains.
Soviet union still exists and part of Ukraine... *dead* I agree not all Americans are like that, and am myself an American. I moved to this country after being born here when I was 16 from Indonesia. I swear I thought half of the people were kidding when they asked me whether we wear clothes in Indonesia, or whether we have cars...? But when my physics teacher actually asked the same question, my jaw just slackened.
omg nomad. maybe they wanted to look like they eagerly follow Nat Geo about tribes still living in rain forests or something. but those still wear some clothes.
another funny thing about that science conference was, many of them actually did look like a typical "mad scientists" with their hair all standing up and one guy with fluffy gray hair looked EXACTLY like the Doc from back To The Future. I was about to run out and look around for a DeLorean...let´s go back, Marty! I wanted to shout to him. seriously, exactly like Christopher Lloyd.
Wow Nomad, that's pretty bad. Although ignorance isn't just an international issue. I grew up in Maine (although not born there) and when I went to college I had a bunch of students (and sometimes their parents) act surprised that I had both electricity and plumbing growing up.
I'm sure you do know that, lol. It was more my apologetic side coming out then me thinking you were unaware that one person does not represent a whole country.
WOW you wrote all of this in 15 mins!! I can't even read it.lol
Kill me Heal me? Everyone was making fun of it back then but know everyone loves it? how ironic!! hahaha but I'm still stuck to thought that how it could have been with SSR.. Kill me, Hill me :P
I would probably be Young Yi by day, Min Ja ahjumma by night. But I'd want an oppa like Ri Jin does, and a swoonworthy guy by my side like lucky Young Shin! Oh, did I mention that I'd want a sunbae at work who mentors me in intelligence and navigating the world by telling me that he has a way to win and goes by the name of Ha Woo Jin? And that if anyone dares to bully me, I'm friends with some serious Bad Guys? muahaha.
(combines my favourite people into one character :D )
whoops! missed out the daily schedule!
> Eat Breakfast & be teased by my brother as per usual dining norms
> Get driven to work by the boyfriend & said goodbye to with a hug and endless goodbyes
> defeats all misogynistic office guys with smarts and help from Woo Jin sunbae
> lunch with the boyfriend and the bestest interns
> stupid supervisor causes loads of trouble once again T.T but that's easily resolved with lots of encouragement at stairwells with the boyfriend who uses his Healer skills to sneak into the office and get things done for me from time to time
> heads home for dinner and drinks with family
> brother who writes crime novels asks about my contacts for his crime thriller novels or stories to tell for he knows my ~secret double life~ helping out the Bad Guys team!
> and after dinner I get a call to be on standby with the special investigation Bad Guys team with my night job as super hacker extraordinaire.
> proceeds to kick ass.
I'm kicking myself for not watching episude 8 last night. I've been waiting so long for YoNa!! Sigh.
"A boring crumbled biscuit" made me snort....which isn't very nice since I'm at work ;)
What kind of character would be? Gosh!! There are so many I'd want to be! Hmmm. I want to be the girl with the nice supportive family at home that always has super delicious meals prepared and even though they have "jobs", they always seem to be there when needed. And yummy yummy fiid available three times a day.
I'd want to be a bit spunky and be working towards a fun career...not sure what. Something semi creative. And while I was struggling to make it, I would still have amazing clothes, especially coats. I love coats. And according to kdramas everyone has at least 40 different usable costs.
Naturally I would be slightly candyish in that I work hard and all the guys crush on me regardless of their wealth or social status. There will be surprise back hugs and piggyback rides (bite me, I'm 30, and yes, I still like piggyback rides). But in the end I'll go for my super sweet and sexy second lead. And I'll still become an ace in my chosen profession.
Maybe it could be in fashion. Then I could just make my own coats. Plus there's been a lot if talks of "stylists" in Kpop completely ripping off major designers lately so....maybe instead of an office it could be the crazy world of Kpop. And somehow I could make a new trend where instead of stylist it's more like a mini design house where I create and produce original ideas for multiple music companies. And nasty rally CEOs and idols alike will be won over by my charm and designs.
thats so true, everyone has ten cats and 25 sweaters. so most of your day you would draw designs and meet buyers? what time would you get up? any morning exercises? coffee or tea person (as that character)?
I persist find creativity best early in the morning or super late at night so I'd probably wake up early and work on any ideas I had during the night. When breakfast is ready I'd eat with the family and then bring in my new designs to work. Naturally I'd take any work related calls if I needed to. Because I'm greedy, I'd hope mom would make something slightly different for breakfast every day.
At work I would work on designs and update myself on recent trends ... Naturally I'd have to watch kdramas and Kpop performances to see what was popular and also to make sure my ideas are fresh.
Meeting with clients would be important to make sales, as well as going out for business lunches wear I could be seen with everyone trendy and fashionable. This means I would be acting out all my favorite scenes from "Let's Eat".
In a perfect drama world I would actual have a chance to do afternoon yoga as well. Although in reality I'd probably have to work 20 hour days and have no time for "luxuries" such as yoga.
Lucky you! Maybe that's the secret to find the one for me...I need a man willing to occasionally give me piggy back rides.
I actually had a guy give me a ride on his shoulders in college - and he was about 6'3" (I'm 5'2") and it freaked me out. So high! I'll stick to piggyback rides. They're fun and oddly comforting. My best friend gives me an occasional piggyback ride (I don't ask, she just offers). There's clearly a reason we stayed close!
"if you were a drama character, what would your typical daily schedule look like "
My friends always jokes that I am about as clumsy and naive as a drama heroine a lot of the time. though without the many part time jobs ;)
Personally I think I'd probably be the second lead (that gets the second lead guy if I'm lucky? I can hope anyway). I'd probably start off having a crush on the hero, but being friends with the heroine and end up helping them get together.
Daily rutine would be living in a roofe top style room/flat. Nice and cosey but not to big. I'd probably always be running slightly late for the bus, and thus be a slight mess, although focused when I have to be. I have a feeling I might be working as a secretary or something like that. Or a librarian. I'd be friends with the cafe owners around the corner and always get lunch there. Also the neighbour Ahjumma who would give me kimchee, complain that I was single (until second lead comes around ;) ).
I'd be moral support of the heronie, though sometimes only halfly listening. And feel a bit sad over the hero not liking me but always hiding it.
That was insane. I'm not fully sure what happed beyond some older members returning (I'm too new to understand but it was cool to see everyone so happy and bonding over shared memories).
Yes, there was a bunch of us who met up on OT last week for the first time in many many moons. So it was catching up, drama-chatting, and just an all around good time.
Many within my current circle met here. We now recap and blog, and share our lives with other social media, but still like to come back to the "old haunt" every once in a while. :-)
Drama character, so far what I've come up with - I am not in the service industry, although I may have work part-time in a coffee shop for a short while.
I like polite chivalrous men, not patronizing, but manners that overflow for me, the girlfriend. Oh, and he is a hobby chef. What does he do for a living? Prosecutor? too volatile. Definitely not a chaebol. Music mogul? Nah, we can't both be in the arts, too elusive. Broadcaster? Maybe...but that might be too high profile. Can't he be successful and not work 24/7? Photographer? Too fickle...Okay, I'm still thinking on this....
I teach in an arts university and support myself. I also have an art studio and run with the arts crowd that somehow buys me favor to not be a target with the politics of the university. My students know nothing about my private life.
My relationship with my mother is on and off - she doesn't always get me, and like all Korean mothers, wishes that I was already married, and criticizes that I don't visit enough. I hear that she brags because I send money and bring "city" gifts that she secretly loves. And she supports my happiness, albeit in a rough and roundabout way. After all, she had dreams, too.
My daily schedule:
a morning bike ride along the Han River (I am not into jogging).
I teach morning art history courses
I am in my studio by the late afternoon
My boyfriend comes over and cooks (it's his passionate hobby)
Sometimes we go on real dates that aren't interrupted by a phone call and we actually eat our meal at the restaurant where we sit by a window on the water's edge
Somehow, I want to work in being a spy, too. Or maybe my twin brother is one, and there is inherent danger in that.
After Misaeng, I changed my mind about rooftops. So, while I still hate is as a place four couples to break up, I wouldn't mind a proposal "event" on a rooftop~
Drama character: Buddist monk. I live in a temple. I take care of visitors who come for temple stays. My day is spent humbly, slowly, meditative in every task I do. I am very close to nature, tending the gardens.
I am rarely seen, except when drama characters come to celebrate death days. Yet I have been a part of family celebrations for decades, and I warmly greet the family members who visit.
In real life, I would love to be a rice farmer's wife. It would be hard work, tending the fields, bring food to market, doing hand crafts in the evenings, cooking for my dear husband, learning Korean cooking from his mother. Simple needs, simple lives, with evenings spent singing while he plays guitar, or sips alcohol and nibbles on scallion pancakes, and watch the sun set.
Like the story of the chrysanthemum farm couple (I will always be grateful to Anne of Green Gables for the spelling of chrysanthemum) ~ it was featured on KBS not long ago. I found the dried buds in an Asian market and love the fragrant, mild tea it makes. I think I know where you get the idea of a rice farmer's wife story line (big grin)~ perhaps part-time poet as well? I would have to be in the city...RL or drama life
awww indeed, they are always there, right? some dramas have had pretty colorful monk characters though. I am not sure if I have such a steady nature. my mouth you know... I would be better as a shaman who gives really weird advice. I would have as much work but I sure would get as much kick out of it as I can
How do I know it is love? In January, in Seoul, she talked her husband into eating outdoors because she thought the restaurant was too noisy and crowded. They are so cute!
Her videos are interesting slices of life, with food! :) The site is using the Korean words for delicious and house (restaurant) mashed together.
Good morning beanies!! I hope everyone is well. With the snow storm and co-workers being out of town I’ve had a bit of a busy week which inevitably means falling further behind in my dramas. Anyone else? *sigh* I’ll never catch up. Fortunately it seems that there’s not too many new shows coming up that I’m that pumped for so maybe I’ll catch up in a month or two. Ha!
For a change of pace, here are some non-review thoughts this week:
- I am so so happy that NYC did not have the kind of storm they were predicting!! Although that mean I still had to work on the days of the storm. As soon as the bridges and tunnels were open that is. My poor mother got about two and a half feet of snow. Bless one of her student’s and her family for coming and helping with some of that.
- Anyone here listen or follow kpop at all? There are so many groups/artists I liked that either had new stuff released this month or are about to in the next 1-2 months. So excited!! Winter is a great time to listen to music lol. Plus I still have an itunes gift card from xmas.
- Where do you guys buy your kdrama DVDs? (I’m in the US) How do you know they have quality English subs or not?
- My phone apps for Viki and Soompi both corrected themselves this week. Yay!!
- Did anyone see the preview posters for Empire of Lust? Omo!! I love love love Kang Ha Neul and will watch anything he’s in so I will find a way to track this down. He looks…so unlike anyone I’ve seen him play before. So excited!
(Yes, I will also be throwing some reviews out there soon as well)
Re: Kdrama DVDs. I use Amazon or YesAsia. So far I haven't figured out how to determine if subs are good or not. It's sort of just order it and hope they're ok. I haven't bought many dramas though.
I bought Queen In-hyun's Man from Amazon, for example, and got a bit annoyed b/c the Viki subs were so much better. The dvd subs were okay & perfectly fine, but they shortened a lot of stuff as if the translator couldn't be bothered to translate everything. I think that often happens.
I wish I could actually find a link to my favorite poster but I can't seem to. I mean is Josean garb so not literally a new look but his persons is so...different. I bet he's going to be amazing in it. /bias
Right?! The poster I like is just him sitting, dressed all in red, shirt slightly open/untied, josean guyliner, staring right at the camera with a giant smirk on his face.
I was just like...who are you? What have you done with Kang Ha Neul?!
I hadn't heard of Spirits' Homecoming. I tried to research but didn't find to much beyond a brief description. It looks like it will be good but probably emotionally brutal.
Your English was perfect!! I know who JYJ is but I'm not that familiar with their music. I mostly just know Yoochun and Jaejoong from drama.
I love CNBlue though. They were one of the first groups I really listened too. And I only really heard Ailee and Mamamoo this year but both are such strong vocalists that they were great to watch/listen to.
Yong-hwa of CNBlue has a solo album out right now, have you listened to it?
I heard about some New Yorkers being disappointed there was no blizzard, but they are luckier than us. we had so ltitle snow this year although more than last year when there was only dirt, dirty, dirty dirt and very dirty dirt.
haven´t even heard of Empire of Lust. I´ll google.
Happy weekend Beanies! How is everybody doing? I’m watching current and recently-finished dramas after ages, so I have something to write about again. Also, seeing some old names in last week’s OT shook me from my lurker mode.
Coming to the dramas that I’m watching or finished recently:
Healer: It is the crack-drama of the year for me. I didn’t know anything about this drama till I came across Fanderay’s sketch (of the rooftop scene); now I’ve joined the bandwagon of crazy fans of this drama and the OTP. It feels good to forget my age and go moon-eyed over an actor/character/OTP, once in a while.
Pinocchio: the first 12 episodes were well paced and though the suspense-element dipped in the second half, I liked the drama overall. For me, the ensemble cast was the highlight of this show. Good, bad or plain-evil, all the characters were engaging and ably enacted. I regret not reading the recaps for this show; discussing each episode would’ve been such fun!
Story of a Man: I couldn’t take the sadness in the 1st episode but plan to plough through it coz it has been touted as a solid revenge–thriller.
Btw, can anyone please suggest good rom-coms and thrillers from 2014? “Liar Game” is on my to-watch list and I finished ‘MLFRAS’, ‘It’s alright, that’s love’ and ‘Marriage, Not Dating’. Any other suggestions?
Also, can any kind soul update me about how the movies ‘Today’s love’ and ‘Gangnam 1970’ are doing critically and commercially? I’ve searched in vain for reviews and box-office reports.
Thrillers wise, Bad Guys is awesome, but it may be a tad violent. It made me stay up for raws - that's how good it is! :) OCN dramas are usually pretty solid for crime/thrillers.
You finished the best ones already-- MLFRAS, IOIL and MND. So it's hard to recommend more, but I agree with the others that Witch's Romance is a good choice. I liked it. Discovery of Romance has a lot of emotional craziness that could turn a lot of people off of it, but I liked it too. Fated to Love You had two good leads and a cute romance but not much else going for it (though it's watchable).
I would highly recommend Heart to Heart..... It's not completed yet but I can't quit rewatching prior episodes just to get my "fill"........it's really the first time I've done with any drama...... Has a MND feel to it......I guess I love tVN dramas the best.....
I'm reaching it from the beginning on darksmurfsubs website (free registration to watch) and the subs are better, clearer than viki subs and I now have a completely different perception of all the scenes between Hong Do and Detective that I previously thought were cute. Its both because of better translations and developments in later episodes. I'm also more aware of how awesome Hong Do truly is and I'm so much more connected to her character.
Anyway id highly recommend darksmurfsub website if you are going to rewatch episodes. Ive never rewatched episodes much before and especially not when the drama is still airing! I love H2H to bits so far.
I second that recommendation for Heart to Heart! I can't even praise this show enough. Great acting by Choi Kang Hee. I am too ashamed to say how many times I have re-watched the (so far) 8 episodes. lol Let's just say I could have probably finished "Jumong" if I had watched it instead. LMFAO
Today's Love and Gangnam 1970 both do well in box office. TL already reaches 1mil viewers and Gangnam 1970 still going strong in Korea and even overseas.
I actually a bit sad Double HJW (Ha Jung Woo-Ha Ji Won) movie, Chronicle of Blood Merchant is not well-received in Korea. Maybe the theme itself is not interesting?? Or it doesn't match Korean viewers' taste? Idk, but I feel the movie should do better considering it starred two top A-list actor and actress.
thanks a lot kanz. I liked the Today's Love trailer and wanted to know about it.
As for G1970, I'm glad LMH tried a different genre and was hoping this would do well both for LMH and KRW's sake.
Yeah Healer is bringing out my inner pre-teen which is rather fun. I enjoyed Punicchio but got stuck on episide 15. It's not that I stopped liking it but I got distracted by too many new shows. I should really finish.
Sorry I can't think if any suggestions beyond what people have already mentioned.
I finally finished Pinocchio -- but once the brother went to jail the show went pretty flaccid for me. But I'd like to see the actor who played the brother in something else.
Healer is adorable, but my crack drama is Kill Me Heal Me -- the two leads really know how to work together. It's not just chemistry ... they are really there for each other as actors.
same here. sometimes I wait so long for a movie and finally give up, after finding no means to watch it. by the time, the DVD is released I wouldd've forgotten all about it.:(
You might try "Secret" with the KMHM OTP. Also, "Nice Guy" (not sure if that was 2013 or early 2014). The other recent one I can think of, which I wouldn't recommend as highly as the others, but still has some things going for it, is "Hotel King" - it was a little too long, as it was a weekend show, and the villain is really over the top.
Liar Game is awesome. I loved the thought put into the games and how people played with each other's head. I would definitely suggest you try it.
Witch's Romance is an adorable rom-com. LOVED the pairing because both the leads played their parts so well. And the bromance was so cute.
It's Okay It's Love is probably not as easy to watch as Witch's. Yet I still truely enjoyed it. Once again the leads make the difference. There's some crying parts in it. At least for me....
Healer....I have no words for that show. Because of it I actually want a back hug. (i usually hate them in dramas)
Is anyone watching Perseverance, Goo Hae Ra? I haven't watched episode 3 yet but after the first two episodes, I've decided it's definitely worth continuing. Plus, Hyung looks pretty damn awesome in eye liner.
It's kind of a musical. I don't know what genre i'd place it in. It's got bits of high school drama, romcom, and melo. For younger people though; you wouldn't see many ahjumma's watching it, I reckon.
I might binge watch it after it's run... Subs are still a bit on the low side for this one it seems. But I'll definitely watch it some time this year :)
Well..unless I read somewhere that it tanked in the end then I might just not :D
I only saw episode one but it didn't really grab me despite liking some if the cast. Is episide two similar in tone? Maybe I should give it more time to hook me.
Lol i’m curious about something, so i gotta ask : Any Ukrainians/ people living in Ukraine on here?
Watched kill me, heal me : Yona is such a hoot!! Lol I was part laughing so hard, part cringing from second hand embarrassment. That fiasco is going to come bite them in the ass later. Nana next week, can’t wait. The chemistry between the leads tho, just daebak!!
Heart to heart : Still loving this!. I want HD to seriously make YS work for it after the stunt he pulled. Go Yi-Seok you have a lot of grovelling to do. That detective is nice and all but i don’t feel sorry for him, seriously the guy had 7yrs. Lol frankly, him being upset about the whole HD-YS thing annoyed me.
Tried watching spy : For a drama called spy, i found it sort of flat, didn’t feel the tension, it was just slow. And the mom is supposedly an (ex)super spy but doesn’t act/reason like a spy(let alone a “super” spy) would/should.
Any one watching Shine or go crazy? What’s the verdict on it?
Yona shows up?!? Oh man, I knew I should have gone ahead with episode 8 despite it not being fully subbed. Sigh. But now I'm at work and I prefer to watch that show on my bigger computer screen at home.
Spy - I'm in the middle of episode four and I agree with you on the mom. I like her as a character and I especially live the family dynamics but she dies t act like a spy. Her emotions read on her face way too easily. And it does feel slower than expected.
yeah im like you, i prefer to watch the eps when its subbed on a bigger screen, but yona was hilarious, she was pretty damn feisty, such attitude it left ri jin speachless.
It does feel slower, I was surprised when I found out that the episode is less than 50 minutes long. I thought it was longer. I haven't picked it up again after episode 4, but I might go back to watch it again just because I want to see mom and dad together, I'm way more interested in their backstory rather than Jaejoong...
Ep 8 was HILARIOUS! I couldn't stop laughing. Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum were both funny, but Ji Sung was totally EPIC as Yona!! No wonder ratings shot up 2%.
That's exactly how I feel about SPY. Though I do like the Mum as a character, I'm not so sure about her capabilities as a spy (though she's not the only one; I do find it hard to any spy in this show seriously). I find the show rather predictable and unexciting too, which is sad because on paper the show sounds great.
I didn't really enjoy Shine of Go Crazy at all, but if you're looking for a good sageuk, I'd suggest Maids. I just finished watching the first episode and thought it was really good.
I hope you are all doing well today. ..... To all the East coast Beanies, I hope the snowstorm didn't make things super miserable for you.
If I may, before I get to our much-beloved dramas, I have a quick question for those who use Android-based tablets: Are any of you having YouTube video resolution problems? ..... I have a Samsung Galaxy tablet and as of yesterday, all of a sudden, all videos are blurry! ..... I can make each video clear again, but only after I click on "Help" and then go back to the video and then click on a little blue "HQ" square that pops up, which never used to pop up before. ..... Is anyone else going through this and if so, are you/were you able to fix this issue?? ..... Thank you in advance for reading this and (hopefully) responding.
Now, on to dramas! ....... Watched this week:
Punch - I don't usually use the word "superb" to describe a drama, but this is exactly what Punch is. ..... Everything about it, from the acting, the writing, to how the scenes are shot are absolutely excellent. This even extends to the set decoration---what's on the walls, the furniture, how many pieces of furniture, etc. ..... Nothing is accidental here.
Healer - I'm a little behind all of you, episode-wise. I just finished ep 12. ..... But oh wow, still so good! ..... That movie date, yeah, now I know what everyone was talking about.
Mr. Baek - Unfortunately, as more and more episodes pass, you can just tell how the transitions from one scene to the next appeas to be hastily thrown together, if that makes any sense. ..... There are some funny moments here and there though.
Downton Abbey - I have the sinking feeling that Anna, with her nervousness, is going to mess things up.
Ok, that's about if for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!
is Punch in the melo category? i love KRW(as you can see from my name) but didn't watch his last drama coz that was a tear-jerker. How about this one?(Actually, I can't see him die, which is why I kept away from this one).
I'm only up to episode 6, but so far, there's been no time for tears. Yes, KRW received devastating news early on, but even he is forging ahead with all he has to do before he goes. ..... It's certainly intense, that's for sure.
Did you ever watch him in Snowman? That's where I first found out who he was.
KRW was in Snowman along with Gong Hyo-jin and the actor who's with him right now in Punch (his name escapes me right now, but he played Kim Jae-won's dad in Scandal). It's from a while back though.
The melo aspect is why I haven't tried this one out. I love KRW too and got really excited when I heard he was doing a drama. That turned to disappointment when I heard the plot b/c it is hard for me to sit through melos.
Loving Punch. So sad it doesn't get a lot of comments. Hoping it's doing well in Korea's ratings. After all, it's one of the only non psychiatrist love stories on TV right now.
It’s doing fine ratings-wise. All the 3 dramas airing on Mon-Tues are pretty much neck-to-neck(Healer fell behind this week and SOGC seems to be catching up) but Punch is leading.
I know what you mean when you say too many shows to watch. ..... You should see my "to watch later" list. It's sooo long! ..... But if you have such a list, certainly add Punch, watch it when you can and see if you like it.
Oh my goodness, Healer! ...... Between this and Punch, I'm loving the start to 2015! Both so good!
I actually have some scattered "to watch lists" but not one main one. However I do often get so impatient that I wath the first episode of shows....and then they go on my "working on" list which is embarrassingly large and is just one main list.
Honestly, I'm excited by a lot of these 2015 shows. I think writers are starting to have a lot more fun and freedom with their shows.
just wanted to let you that i watched mr baek on
dramafever. I really find their subs, forgive me, substandard.
Even so i loved the drama. i did watch the last episode again on hulu (free). what a difference!
the episode was really so much better and i noticed just how much df cut out by not having good subs.
please try to see it all, i don't think you'll regret it.
I'll certainly watch the whole thing because I do like the actors. And again, there are fun moments.
On the subtitle situation, I can't really comment, because I watch it on regular tv, on the mbc channel. Their subtitles seem fine. ..... But I know what you mean when subtitles are subpar. I've had that happen when watching dramas on a mobile device. ..... Especially bizarre are when sageuk characters' dialogue is subtitled as modern teenage slang. ..... You just know "that" wasn't said in Joseon! Heh!
Oh snow is fun. Storms are less fun.. York has been bad for snow which is fine by my (forgot my woolen sweater in Norway, worst idea ever...). But my hometown had a power cut yesterday due to storms. Saw my mum posting about making pancakes on the camping burner which is something we used to do when I was little.
Hope you are okay and the snow isn't to bad where you are!
No snow here where I live (we don't get snow). I was just hoping that the Beanies who live on the East coast of the U.S. weren't too devastated by the tremendous amount of snow that was expected. ...... Where I'm at it's almost beach weather, even though it's the middle of winter.
Pancakes on a cold day are always yummy!! I had some this week, even though it wasn't that cold! Heh! ..... Hope the power outage didn't last long in your mum's area.
we have a very mild weather too, I am sweating - if winter is not below -10, I feel really uncomfortable and alienated. there was snow on my birthday past sunday though, and it didnt melt right away too.
my cold day food is hot soup with chilli, ginger, garlic, onions, brussels sprouts and green beans.
Gah first week of nursing school almost done. Just a bit more. I can do this...I think?
haha I would like to find a new drama to watch. People here seem to love Healer. The first few episodes were okay, so I dunno if I'll continue it. But I want to for the cast.
Finally getting around to watching Pride & Prejudice. I was behind on the last batch of dramas but from reading comments on OT I decided to check out P&P or Liar’s Game. I chose P&P b/c of watching Sandglass and having never actually seen Choi Min-soo in anything else . . . ever. Imagine my surprise when I saw that the lead investigator in P&P was the investigator in Sandglass too! So I get to check in with two ajusshis instead of one. I really wanted something lighter after Sandglass & I thought P&P would also be a lighter watch than Liar’s Game. Perhaps it is, but I was expecting a rom-com and rom-com this is not. I guess I should have actually read up on what it was about before starting it, but I was trying to avoid spoilers.
Hyde, Jekyll, Me: Let me just get this out and hopefully I will not have to whine/complain anymore during this show’s run—while it is perfectly watchable and I really do adore Binnie, I am disappointed that it is not better. Every year dramaland has like a million and one watchable, perfectly ~okayish shows vs. a handful of really good ones and I was just hoping this was one of the really good ones. It’s not though, but it’s still early in its run so there’s hope it can turn around. Plus, it’s not a bad show nor is it boring, so I shall not complain anymore. Promise!
In RL, I have an unexpected problem that has developed. Now that I’ve gotten back into writing, I realize how much I missed it all these years and I am starting to not want to do my real job. I totally had myself fooled all these years thinking I was lucky that I got to incorporate my love for writing into my real job. But writing motions and briefs is nothing compared to writing about something you really enjoy so now I’m having a mini-identity crisis wondering about my career choice. I feel a little ridiculous, but it’s true, lol!
P&P is not a rom-com, but I did like it. I think they could have left out the whole romance, actually. The characters were strong enough without it. The acting in P&P is marvelous.
I agree. Even though the romance is still very periphery at this point b/c I am still early in the show's run, I feel it detracts from the overall quality. I also don't like the coincidence of it all. That is if you're talking about the romance b/wn Dong-chi and Yeol-moo. The budding feelings Kang-so has for Yeol-moo is cute though. Although I am wondering where it is going. Will Kang-so be a legit contender for her affections? It's too early for me to tell.
I kept hearing about the twists and I wondered if I'd be able to wrap my head around them all while I'm so distracted & busy. I wanted to save that drama for when I have more free time. But I look forward to it. Everyone raved about it & I was bummed I couldn't partake too!
I have to say that Chief Moon rocked it - his character is consistent but hard to read, and he is not a hand-you-the-answer man, but makes sure no one gets on the wrong track while following leads themselves - protective but crusty, can distinguish between truth versus conveniently hiding the truth and the ramifications of both, my fav character in this drama.
Interesting Elle. Sandglass and then P&P. P&P I followed through to the end; without recaps, there were some missing parts for me as you have to be really invested in the twists; but the names and faces were confusing me.
I've been thinking of taking up Sandglass as it is one of the first two works of the writer of Healer, which i love. It is both plot and character driven. I love the other one she wrote, the Legend of 4 Gods, so i thought Sandglass would be next. Hmm, we will see if i can take it up. @Jomo's video link seem to show she must love it as well.
Now with all these 3-named dramas, their endings are controversial to say the least. Will Healer end like that, too? What do you think fellow Healer lovers? Writer-nim, SJN, i'm not into fanservice. Please give us an ending that I can live with.
Hmmm, never heard of Legend of 4 Gods. I will look that one up, esp if it has Choi Min-so, who may be my new jussi crush. I have heard Eyes of Dawn is even better than Sandglass & it's from the same writer-- have you seen/heard about that one?

Hi there
at work and working late so using the opportunity of a slow hour to take a nap. it has been slow, slow slooow in the museum. trying not to doze off in front of visitors. maybe if I do, I wake up with a different personality... would make life more interesting.

But when my physics teacher actually asked the same question, my jaw just slackened.

another funny thing about that science conference was, many of them actually did look like a typical "mad scientists" with their hair all standing up and one guy with fluffy gray hair looked EXACTLY like the Doc from back To The Future. I was about to run out and look around for a DeLorean...let´s go back, Marty! I wanted to shout to him. seriously, exactly like Christopher Lloyd.

> defeats all misogynistic office guys with smarts and help from Woo Jin sunbae
> lunch with the boyfriend and the bestest interns
> stupid supervisor causes loads of trouble once again T.T but that's easily resolved with lots of encouragement at stairwells with the boyfriend who uses his Healer skills to sneak into the office and get things done for me from time to time
> heads home for dinner and drinks with family
> brother who writes crime novels asks about my contacts for his crime thriller novels or stories to tell for he knows my ~secret double life~ helping out the Bad Guys team!
> and after dinner I get a call to be on standby with the special investigation Bad Guys team with my night job as super hacker extraordinaire.

Ok back to reality.

Hmm... This is hard :p

I think the real life stories are just as fascinating as dramas.
For example, one girl I am in class with is an Australian who married a handsome and indulgent Korean man. Check out their site at:
https://matjibhunters.wordpress.com/

Hi 4D!

I've usedYesAsia too (though to europe) and the one's I've bought have been okay for subs as well as quick to ship.
Mostly ordered music though, but know other people that have used them more for dramas and such and have been satisfied with the result.

Healer is adorable, but my crack drama is Kill Me Heal Me -- the two leads really know how to work together. It's not just chemistry ... they are really there for each other as actors.
As rom-coms go, I loved Protect the Boss.

How’s it going beanies?!

Spy - I'm in the middle of episode four and I agree with you on the mom. I like her as a character and I especially live the family dynamics but she dies t act like a spy. Her emotions read on her face way too easily. And it does feel slower than expected.

Though I do like the Mum as a character, I'm not so sure about her capabilities as a spy (though she's not the only one; I do find it hard to any spy in this show seriously). I find the show rather predictable and unexciting too, which is sad because on paper the show sounds great.

Hi Everyone!
Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

the episode was really so much better and i noticed just how much df cut out by not having good subs.
please try to see it all, i don't think you'll regret it.

Heh!

Hi Korfan!

Hi!
Hope you're ok also. Have a good weekend!

Korfan:
Power is back on (yay for having most of the power lines underground).
But yes, wood fueled fireplace to keep the house warm, crack up the camping burner and make pancakes is an awesome way to spend a stormy night.

we have a very mild weather too, I am sweating - if winter is not below -10, I feel really uncomfortable and alienated. there was snow on my birthday past sunday though, and it didnt melt right away too.
my cold day food is hot soup with chilli, ginger, garlic, onions, brussels sprouts and green beans.

Definitely no snow where I live - Florida is not known for its snow. :)
It's been beautiful here - temps in the high 60's (F). :)

Gah first week of nursing school almost done. Just a bit more. I can do this...I think?
haha I would like to find a new drama to watch. People here seem to love Healer. The first few episodes were okay, so I dunno if I'll continue it. But I want to for the cast.

I think Healer is okay.
I'm more interested in the people in the pirate radio van than the clark kent lois lane thing.
I think the clark and lois story line takes too much away from ooori Moon Ho ssi.
In the beginning the stunts were very cool though.

Happy Friday Beanies!

Liar Game has darker moments, but it's also really fun. It's much more about the twists, mind games and thrills than any particularly heavy melodrama.

I kept hearing about the twists and I wondered if I'd be able to wrap my head around them all while I'm so distracted & busy. I wanted to save that drama for when I have more free time. But I look forward to it. Everyone raved about it & I was bummed I couldn't partake too!

While I only watched a couple of episodes of Pride & Prejudice, I will say Choi Min-soo was quite good.
Certainly not a breezy watch, but it's ok. I'm going to have to watch it at a later, when I have more time.
