Odds and Ends: All hail the power of the squee

girlfriday: So, what’s up?

javabeans: The comment count, that’s for sure. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but since I get emailed every time a comment is posted, let’s just say my inbox is exploding over Healer comments.

girlfriday: Oh, I’ve noticed. It’s hard to miss. Kinda like someone having a block party in your front yard. It’s fun to see Healer bringing people out of the woodwork. De-lurkers everywhere!

javabeans: Yes, I find that a nice side effect. Even if Healer recaps are bringing in ten times the comments on average recaps, I don’t think there are necessarily ten times the readers — it’s more that the existing readers are suuuuper excited and motivated to comment.

girlfriday: Yeah, just ten times the fervor.

javabeans: Okay, maybe there’s a little more than the average readership, since it IS an exciting show and all. But it’s interesting how it compares to a show with actually ten times the readership. Say like with You From Another Star, which had a much broader audience and also high comments on a regular basis — but it was in the high-and-popular range, not the wtf-is-going-on-here outlier range for Healer.

girlfriday: There are just some shows that are disproportionately popular on Dramabeans, like The King 2 Hearts and City Hunter. Who knows why. No really, do you know why?

javabeans: I think shows like that have a certain cult factor, something that inspires a really violent emotional reaction — which may be related to but isn’t synonymous with production value or quality or acting. I’m thinking the way you got excited about Buffy and Veronica Mars, and while there were other really good shows out there that I liked, I wasn’t going to spend my week obsessing about The West Wing, you know?

girlfriday: OMG, I STILL think about what happens to Buffy after the finale, and how Angel and Spike run off into the sunset together. And it hurts my heart to even think about Veronica not being with Logan at all times.

javabeans: See, I feel like she needs to maybe not be with him all the time, because they bring out the best-worst in each other, and that’s just not safe for society.

girlfriday: WHAT ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT, YOU CRAZY PERSON?!

javabeans: Why am I the crazy one for wanting Veronica to have a stable, happy life? But ahem. Back to Healer.

girlfriday: Okay fine, it also hurts my heart to even think about Healer not being with Young-shin at all times.

javabeans: Aieeeeeee I knoooooow. I’m not one for codependent relationships, but I really think you could make an argument for why these two should always be in touching range.

girlfriday: Actually, I think I squee more when she has moments with Bongsookie. And when Bongsookie gets jealous of Healer, because it’s hilarious and messes with my mind.

javabeans: I can see why the fans are totally going nutso, because this drama hits that balance of forward plot momentum, tension-filled romance, fast-paced writing, and characters you wish were real. I do think the Korean fans feel this as well, that it has a special pull even though the ratings are just okay. It was super hilarious to me how I read Korean fans talking about us on DC Inside, and translating Dramabeans comments into Korean, and their foremost realization was “Wow, they [international fans] react just like we do!”

girlfriday: They’re super excited about DB excitement about Healer, and like true drama addicts, they were all, “Awesome, something else to read while I wait for the next Healer episode!”

javabeans: It was amusing to read them posting updates on our steadily increasing comment count, like the Dramabeans ticker-watch, while over here on DB the commenters were saying the same thing about the numbers. And when I tweeted about it, the gallery caught on and commented that I’d noticed them noticing us, and I almost commented on that, but stopped before we got stuck in an infinite time-space loop.

girlfriday: It’s like a bizarre funhouse of mirrors. Though after a while you realize that both sides are just commenting on the number of comments.

javabeans: Then you get 100 comments saying things like “Only 100 more comments, guys!” Maybe it’s a good time to suggest (gently!) that while a super-high comment count is fun, maybe we could dial back the number of postings that are solely there to increase comment counts.

girlfriday: But still have fun and do all the squeeing you want!

javabeans: Yes, squeeing is welcome! I don’t want to be the hall monitor, because any show that gets everyone having this much fun should be enjoyed. It’s just that we’ve broken the record now, so maybe we can keep the discussion to how we feel about the show? Because goodness knows, there’s enough to talk about!

girlfriday: I could certainly write 3000 comments about how much that last cliffhanger sucked.

javabeans: Because WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. OMG. How could you leave us like that.

girlfriday: Well I guess it worked then.

javabeans: Clearly, since it’s Saturday and you and I are still talking about Healer.

Great, now they're reading US while they wait for the next episode - I'm only sorry I can't turn around and return the favour! :)

Honestly, I'd be curious to know if this explosion of interest is encouraging Ji Chang Wook or scaring him!

once upon a time i did that too - waited for a drama to be over, first to be sure i won't get desperate waiting periods until the next ep aired, second to be sure it was worth investing 16-20+ hours of my life into the lives of imaginary characters. it worked, most of the time - saved me from heirs when the first eps didn't catch my interest, but also it didn't work some times - i watched gu family book just to glimpse daddy gu every once in a while (and his most important part was over by the end of episode 2 of a 24-hour drama.)

now, i refresh and refresh and refresh the comments threads, and replay eternal love FMV's on youtube and by the way, this FMV using the cab's angel with a shotgun song as BG is amazing, the lyrics are meant for healer lol. just so you know. *wink*

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEqoFQUCsYo

and when the episode FINALLY airs, i can't wait for subs or recaps because who needs words when a tone of voice and a raised eyebrow tell you all about it? and there's the extra bonus of *having* to re-watch the episode when the subs are ready, and then yet again when the recaps are posted :D

triple win! so yeah, no more wait-til-it's-over period for me... not for this one :D

The funny thing for me is that I stayed away from Healer because I was watching Pride and Prejudice (curse you finale!) and I'm a teacher, and always working at home, I have no life, no time to have a life ... Anyway, one Saturday I rebelled against a stack of papers to be graded and watched the first episode, and the next, next, until I hated my life again because there were no more episodes (back to the stack of papers. Boo. Hiss). Now this is the show that I look forward to all week. So well done! All shades of awesome.

I started watching Healer late so I was catching up on episodes (which leads to the inevitable disappointment when you catch up with the schedule and have to WAIT for the next episode to air). I was going back to DB to check on recaps and thought "wth" on the comment counts between episodes 7 & 8. 200 to 1000.

It's one case where I wish the comments could be subcategoried. Then I could sort between discussions of plot, production and acting, and "omg Heeeeeeeeeler".

Different from everyone else, I came to watch Healer with high expectation because of the casts and writer Song Ji Na. Ep 1 was disappointing too me, uh oh another drama involves complicated older generation so I dropped it. But when other dramas failed to grab my attention also, I came back to Healer and finally I saw the light lol.

I think I love Healer even more than I loved City Hunter and Gaksital, and that's definitely saying something. I felt like 2014 was a disappointing year up until the fall, but 2015 is starting out strong! Here's hoping it stays good *crosses fingers* :D
Now, omghealerwhydoyouonlyhavetwoepisodesperweek D: I'm seriously considering going back and rewatching previous episodes. Is that sad? Probably. But it's so good! I have no idea why either, but SO MANY EMOTIONS >_< Tbh, your recaps probably improve the experience. ...No, they definitely improve the experience. So props to you, javabeans! <3

Hi mary
In that case, you script can also locate where in the comments, something or someone is mentioned, I believe? We have no book-marking facility so it's getting crazy to locate anything after a while. Would a script be able to do the locating? If so, can you write one?

I just press ctrl+f (or cmd+f if on a mac) to check if someone replied to my comments or mentioned me. Or mentioned Song Jae-rim. Hehe

If you're on mobile or tablet, there's still an option to "Find in page..." somewhere. But that changes depending on your device so I don't know the exact command for it. :(

Oh poor JB having notifications for all the comments on the Healer recaps! JCW in Healer is definitely worth drooling over and the OTP moments have been squee-worthy but since everything that could be said was already said by almost everybody else I have restrained myself to making comments about the series.

I must say that YJT has been doing a good job giving a nuanced performance as KMH. I thought that he would be the main character of the show since he is THE big star in the series but even before they entered the live shoot in phase the OTP was given equal if not more screen time.

Ratings are doing okay, just shy of a steady 10%. But the most important thing is that we are enjoying it and that every week we get plenty of squeeee moments.

Looks like Healer is filling the vacuum/void in the kdrama action+romance genre. It’s been years [ages in kdramaland] since Iris (2009), City Hunter (2011), and King of 2 Hearts (2012) originally aired.

If I were to narrow it down to one thing...I think it's just really exciting for some reason? Like, I'm actually excited to see how things unfold each and every episode and then get more excited when they exceed my expectations.

I don't know, it's weird, because it's by no means a perfect drama. It could just be that there's so much for me to love about it that I have no time to waste thinking about any possible reasons why I shouldn't love it? So then I just looooooove it. A lot. (if that makes any sense...lol)

I guess the comment count has to do with the feeling people get while and after watching this drama and/or reading the recaps afterwards.

This show is all about the FEELS. And the people in love with this show are having lots of FUN.

Not to forget the reception of people in the thread to questions or analysis or links or every other comments laid out there, even only squealing their hearts out often gets a reply :-D

For people who are "regulars" in the beanut gallery, commenting on a particular recap is probably no big deal, but for others who rarely comment or NEVER ever laid a single word in Dramabeans, IT IS. A big deal.

Sometimes for me, and probably some other people, we don't know when or how to jump in the pool.

I noticed there're a lot, and I mean A LOT of first-time commenters in the Healer thread. I think, besides the urge to show their love for this drama in the form of written words, this sudden explosion of de-lurkers has a lot to do with the realization that they share the same feelings and excitement for this show and that there're all welcomed to share whatever they want to say to everyone. And they often get feedbacks from others. I understand this also happens in recaps for other dramas, but with Healer, it's just more intense. The excitement is just... contagious. And a lot of people wants to be a part of that excitement, and keeps coming back for more.

So besides the fact that it IS a good drama (so far), the sudden explosion of comments IMO has a lot to do with the people or may I call it the community (someone even named it the Healer "ecosystem". Ha!) surrounding it.

@ pastmidnite

I feel you've nailed it, the main reason why the comments are coming in and why so many are delurking. This Healer community is a warm and welcoming one and eager to have more join in. No one should stress about whether they belong or how to be accepted, everyone just does and is, and it's great to not feel alone. :)

I just can't have enough of his layered acting....and looks, of course *hangs head* But, hey, a girl gotta have a crazy kdrama crush at least ONCE in a lifetime, okay? Some people were in love with the show from the start, but others (like me) found the first ep. to be choppy and took a little longer to get hooked. The full-blown Healer mania in the comments threads didn't start until ep. 8.

We're lucky that so many of us are finding it to be deliciously cracktastic, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. I'd definitely give it another shot, but don't expect to be madly in love with it right away (although hopefully you will be soon).

Wow, do not know at all how hard it is to wait till the weekend to watch Healer because I had my finals and I was super super happy at these 2 recent episodes!

Also that it's not available in the U.S. on viki where I watch most of my dramas because you have to wait two weeks from the aired date (i use the hola extention and route it to uk servers to watch), there's not much hype where I'm from which is weird because there's a lot of hype from other places.
+ I desperately wish a lot of people would start paying more attention to Healer because it is such a great show to be shared, even though it may become overrated, that's how you know a lot of people love it through its work and it's just an enjoyable show for many.

Haha, oh, I agree about the commenting. This is why I was totally trying to keep my comments to things I actually wanted to say about the show because I definitely don't want it to just be this "how many comments can we get" thing...but then everyone gets so into it that it's kind of hard not to get caught up in it yourself LOL... (seriously, it's weird. I never thought I'd care, but I've totally gotten into the record breaking LOL)

But, omg, you get emails for every comment. I will definitely make sure all my comments at least have some worth beyond comment-counting from now on.

That said, I'm actually surprised to find that a great deal of our comments are discussion-based and a lot of the comment count comes from people actually addressing each and everyone's comments when they read them. So there is definitely something about this show that just gets people wanting to write about why they love it, what they think is going to happen next, the mystery, the romance, etc.

Like something that I'm enjoying so much is that if I leave a comment there...it get's answered every single time and some sort of discussion will come out of it. I've never had this experience on recaps before so it's been a lot of fun. And then you add that the Korean fans are actually noticing our fandom! It's pretty wonderful to be a part of it.

Of course, lately commenting has been a bit painful for me because it's just reminding me that MONDAY ISN'T HERE. Saturday, go away, I don't want you! Sunday, you can stay so that I can sleep during most of you and then wake up 5 am on Monday morning just to watch Healer live because that cliffhanger is driving me crazzzzzzyyy. That's a run-on sentence, but I totally don't care.

I can't even for this show! The agony yet the fun and overwhelming feeling of watching a currently airing kdrama! The torture of waiting but so happy to read discussions and spazzing with everyone! much more happy that I'll probably never be on reading tweets and trends about currently airing local dramas in my own country. Hahaha.

Hello JB & GF!

I am one of the lurkers of whom you speak. I've been an avid lurker for about 5 years now, and during that time I may have only commented three times: twice for Queen In-Hyun's Man (squeeeee Boong-do!!) and once for Answer Me 1994 (Chil-bongie aghhhh~ my heart still aches.) I'd been contemplating to, like Jung-hoo, come out of the darkness and join in on the madness. These week long waiting games for the next episodes have been KILLING me and all the fangirling on the episode recap threads have truly kept me sane. Like a nicotine patch during episodes of withdrawal, I come to Dramabeans and have my fix of Chae Young-shin and her Bong-sookie.

And I really have to thank you ladies both for the timely recaps and for permitting this wonderful environment for proper gushes and squees. Really, it's amazing how eloquent your recaps are when all I can muster is, "OMG OMG OMG!!!!!! Aiiiiiiiiieeee!!!!" Really, bravo lol.

for me, its 99% characters crafting and their emotional singlemineded devotion to each other... was glad they didn't put in a Spidey man that start off by saving the world, nor put in the Batman that chew in revenge or , or even put in superman which plainly so saintly want to save the world... all the main characters ARE NOT SAINTS, PREISTS, SUPERHEROS... they are like everyday normal beings like us,each has their flaws, not excactly "gifted", not exactly "superpowered", not exactly top beauty or top hunk... and drama didn't drown us with a lot of kisses and drop dead romantic lines.. infact Healer seldom "TALK" to YS.. to be frank, the real Boy jUNGHOO is actually neither Healer or Bongsu... yet is actually actually combination of each of them... and yes, we all mesmerized by "HANDS",
mm...healer reach Singapore here, has international fans.. but it really need the famous "China netizens-virus" spread to pump up viewership... HOPE PRODUCTION TEAM CONSIDER HEALER 2... pray for that okay, everyone.

Why I am obsessed to this drama: 60% due to Ji Chang Wook. 20% due to OTP. 15% due to the awesome plot. 5% due to the hype and I want to be a part of it.

Off topic, or maybe slightly on topic, but I'm with Javabeans on the whole Veronica and Logan saga. I think they are better apart than together. I'm all for Veronica living a healthy, stable, and happy life. Also, I love Piz, and nothing anyone says will ever change that! :P

Anyway, back to Healer!! So excited for Monday!!! :D

would not contain anything... since Sisters JB and GF mentioned the "rating" so-so but comments count galaxy-rocketing ... so it befit me to say some kind words for Healer... okay, yes, Healer is not that kind of oscar worthy, KBS big drama award worthy "soul-searching" / big time social exposuure drama... in any given time, a drama bout some superhero, be it superman + spiderman+ batman combined (and even surpass them all), and throw in a prettier than the angmo Lois Youngsin.. and chew on integrity of reporters, conscience of journalism, courage of newsmen, sickness of politicians, actually actually you wouldn't be that exactly "extreme-serious" topic genre in kidrama... cause we noona and aunties and them teens, just want to have some "human-emotion stirred uplifting"drama to de-stress ourselves weekly... so rating or not, doesn't show whether a drama is oscar worthy content, and honestly, top rating show like My Love from the Love, which like-u-say, reach wider fan base... ahemm....not so,,, its just reach as far as China, and its China virus-spread that cause netizens noticed, then news reporters chewed on rating soared, the more news reported, the more people out of curiousity start watching... AND IT IS JUST ABOUT SOME ALIEN, SOME NOONA PRETTY STAR, ,,, rating actually not important,eg. MyLovefromStar doesn't churn in whole different fan bases from other show...just zillions more noona and aunties from china.... to us simple Healer fans,,, it doesn't matter , don't compare lah.. to us individually Healer heals each and single one weekly for 2 days, then we hang on the; empty medicine bottle, repeatedly pour drink in refilled water every day for 5 days, then till next Monday cometh, for our healing process... and that's enough. as long as Healer production team understand, even if viewers rating not awesome, to us, each and simple one of us, its matters, and will be remembered "till our death bed", and the "process of healing from beginning of Dec till mid Feb" is hormones changing us, stirring our senses, transforming us... this alone matters.
and that sentence just went to me with me, and wake me up daily...."i don't know how to run away"....
BEAUTIFUL.
