Healer: Episode 14

Oof. It’s a wrenching episode, taking us on a roller coaster ride of wild emotional ups and downs. Our hero has to grapple with some weighty, nearly unbearable, burdens, struggling to make sense out of the insensible. Thankfully for him, he isn’t as alone in the world as he thinks he is—and thankfully for us, roller coasters have upswings to counter the violent downs. Up, up, and away!

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Teacher dies. Jung-hoo arrives at the station in time to see his body being wheeled out to an ambulance, and his knee-jerk reaction is to charge at the scene furiously.

Dae-yong and several buddies are thankfully on hand to hold him back, though it’s a struggle. He flings them aside a few times, but they manage to prevent him from being spotted and drag him out of sight. It’s a good thing, too, because Detective Yoon just misses spotting Jung-hoo, keeping Healer undetected for the time being.

Dae-yong blocks Jung-hoo’s path to the car, and Jung-hoo slumps down against it, suddenly weakened. He reels, physically winded.

Then he gets in the car anyway, shoving Dae-yong aside, and drives off. Gah, not in that condition!

Min-ja is just as devastated by the news, and answers Dae-yong’s call with a heavy heart. But she pulls herself together to address the problem of their rogue Healer. So she puts in a phone call to Moon-ho, not bothering to introduce herself; she doesn’t need to, because the second she drops Teacher’s name, Moon-ho’s all ears.

Jung-hoo storms into the hospital with a single-minded goal, and his rage provides a tunnel vision that makes him think nothing of beating down the poor doctors who get in his way. He gets to the morgue efficiently—but once there, he hesitates, trembling in trepidation.

As soon as Moon-ho arrives at the hospital, Detective Yoon recognizes him and stops him to ask a few questions. Moon-ho’s got bigger concerns right now, but he can’t just shake off the curious cop.

Jung-hoo enters the exam room and has difficulty approaching the body, his hands shaking as he draws back the sheet. One look at Teacher’s face is all he needs, and the tears spring forth immediately, even as he says, “It’s not true, right? I remember how you played a trick on me last time just like this, you know. So get up. Teacher.”

He asks pleadingly, but reality is slowly setting in. Slowly, Jung-hoo sinks to the ground in a crouch.

Detective Yoon leads Moon-ho down to the morgue, and along the way they encounter the unconscious orderly in the hallway. While the detective calls for help, Moon-ho hurries forward to the morgue ahead of him—but when he arrives, the exam room is empty.

Moon-ho moves to draw the sheet over Teacher’s head, but pauses—this must be the first time in over a decade that he’s seen his hyung’s face. He wells up with tears.

When the detective asks how he knows Teacher, Moon-ho replies that this man was like family to him. Tears dripping down his face, Moon-ho leans over the body and promises, “Hyung, I’ll take care of this now.”

His reaction to the supposed Healer’s death naturally makes the detective wonder, and I’m hoping this doesn’t signal complications for Moon-ho… even though it totally will, right? Detective Yoon calls for reinforcements to beef up his investigation, and anticipates that they’ll have “guests” dropping in to get Teacher’s statement. They’ll have to set a trap.

As Jung-hoo drives off, he thinks back to earlier days with Teacher, such as the time he’d proudly presented Jung-hoo with home-cooked birthday soup (which did not go well). Then there was the time Jung-hoo had presented Teacher with his high school equivalency certificate and “won” a promised briefcase from the Teacher (which was full of porn, HA).

A car overtakes him on the road, then screeches to a halt in front of him, forcing Jung-hoo to stop. Jung-hoo tries to drive around it, but Moon-ho literally puts himself in front of the car, then grabs to hold Jung-hoo back while explaining that a woman called to tell him he’d be coming this way. And that he’d be out to kill.

Moon-ho blocks his path with his body and pleads, “Don’t do it! Don’t! You’d become a murderer because of bastards like that? Why?!” Moon-ho continues to try to stop Jung-hoo, who keeps knocking him aside, not giving up even after receiving several hard blows. Jung-hoo isn’t so far gone that he’ll seriously hurt Moon-ho, though, and stops himself from delivering a severe punch. Moon-ho gasps out that his teacher wouldn’t have wanted him to do this.

Jung-hoo asks in frustration what he has to do, and Moon-ho’s promise to figure something out isn’t good enough—he needs something now. He bursts out that he’s like this because there’s nothing he can do, so he demands that Moon-ho tell him something.

Moon-ho yells back that he’s felt this way for the past twenty years, fighting the frustration of being unable to do anything. Oof, you know, that is a very good point.

“So just give me a little time,” Moon-ho asks. “I’ll find a way.”

But now Jung-hoo turns the blame inward: “I called Teacher here. He didn’t want to come, but I called him. I made him talk about things he didn’t want to talk about, and got angry when he did. And because I was angry, even though he was here for the first time in eight years, we didn’t eat a single meal together. But that damned old man…”

Jung-hoo’s really struggling, and Moon-ho tells him to go ahead and cry. Instead, Jung-hoo bellows his frustration, then gets back in his car. Moon-ho blocks his car door and swears to take down every single evildoer and make them pay for their crimes, asking Jung-hoo to trust him.

Jung-hoo asks, “How? Aside from stopping me, what can you do?” Moon-ho doesn’t have an answer, and he finally steps back. Jung-hoo drives off.

Moon-shik receives reporters at home for an interview, now that he’s a mayoral candidate, and Myung-hee keeps up appearances as the loving wife in front of the cameras. But her face is stony when she listens to Moon-shik giving his interview, as he laughs how it’s both his strength and weakness that he’s exactly the same on the inside and outside: “I can’t hide a thing!”

Young-shin is puzzled when she can’t get a hold of Bong-soo. The boys were at her place all night working, and he supposedly only stepped out to go running, but never returned. Reporter Yeo points out that Bong-soo has a habit of running away in fear at nighttime or at dawn, and speculates that he must’ve seen something that scared him off… insinuating that Young-shin spooked him with her behavior, ha.

He and Editor Jang look at her expectantly for an explanation of what she did to run him off, but she doesn’t have to give one since Moon-ho arrives to explain Bong-soo being absent today.

Young-shin proposes to Moon-ho that they interview Moon-shik, saying that she’d like to tell him directly that they find his past shady so they can get his response to it. The problem is that he might decline a request for interview, so she asks Moon-ho to pull some strings, since he’s his brother.

“From today, he isn’t,” Moon-ho replies, startling her. “I’ve decided that Kim Moon-shik and I are not brothers. Not anymore.”

Despite the surprise, Young-shin doesn’t ask questions, saying merely that she’ll try getting the interview on her own. She admits to a particular interest in the wife, having read about how amazingly close the spouses’ relationship is. She allows that Moon-ho knows his brother and must have good reason to consider him unfit for office—but perhaps a man who is so devoted toward one woman all his life isn’t all bad. At the very least, she’d like to meet the wife and draw her own conclusions. Moon-ho agrees to think about it, which she takes as a positive sign.

She asks if he talked to Bong-soo, and he just says that he must be out with a cold. Young-shin starts texting Bong-soo, but deletes each attempt. First she asks “Bong-soo-ya” if he’s sick, and then she asks more formally, “What is your name?” Finally she sets the phone aside, not texting after all.

At her desk, Min-ja sets a shot of soju before a photograph of Teacher and asks him to wish her luck—she’s about to resurrect some long-dormant superpowers. Then she gets to business, unleashing her full hacker skills on her keyboard, which soon goes detected by the police department. Detective Yoon races to his terminal to get in on the action, recognizing the hacking pattern, a look of gleeful anticipation on his face as he counters.

Flashback: Min-ja is the lead cop on a stakeout, with a young Detective Yoon weathering the brunt of her rebukes as she outlines the importance of the case they’re working on. They have to wait for a warrant to be issued before charging in, but until then they have to make sure their targets don’t catch wind and delete their computer files.

While they’re waiting, Min-ja takes a call with her irate husband, who screams, “You call yourself a mother?!” It’s because she won’t leave the stakeout, although Detective Yoon overhears and urges her to go, because her four-year-old is in the hospital after yet another surgery. Just then the warrant is issued, and Min-ja orders her team into action, choosing work again.

In the present, Detective Yoon springs the trap. But Min-ja outmaneuvers him, freezing the system while she downloads the files she needs.

This hack brings back more painful memories, and the next flashback shows her husband accusing her of not being a mother, because she wasn’t there when her child died. Making things even worse, her police boss issues orders from above to cover up the case and delete those hard-earned files after all.

Well, it’s no wonder she quit the force after that. Ajumma raises a sardonic toast to Teacher and drinks.

She hacks into the Healer pad to tell Jung-hoo that she got Teacher’s recorded statement, which sounds to her like a message meant for Jung-hoo. Jung-hoo watches Teacher’s video, where Teacher says that he never gave too much thought to the jobs he took on, but ought to have. If he had, those thoughts could’ve been his signboard, directing him where to go when he felt lost, warning him of cliffs or construction ahead, or to turn around.

When asked whether he murdered Go Sung-chul on commission, Teacher replies that he doesn’t accept those jobs:

Teacher: “If a person kills another person, they become inhuman. You should die a person. That way, you can reunite with those people you want to see again, those who left before you. There’s one thing I regret: I should have quit from the start.”

That’s when Teacher turns away from the detective and faces the camera instead: “Give it up. Go live with the woman you love, raising two kids, a dog, two cats, a few goldfish. I should have.”

Shaken and confused, Jung-hoo can only ask in a small lost voice, “Why?”

Ajumma advises Jung-hoo to honor Teacher’s dying wishes, and offers to make him a new identity, or to solidify Bong-soo’s. But Jung-hoo says heavily, “It’s too late. She already knows everything. Who I am.”

Then he corrects himself: “No, not everything. She doesn’t know that being with me will bring her pain. That it might even kill her.” He ignores ajumma’s barrage of questions, saying that there’s nothing he can do but sleep.

So he sets out unplugging all his computers, pulls the battery out of his phone, removes his watch and ring, and heads for bed. Checking out of life for the time being.

Moon-ho drops by the ABS station, and although his former boss Min-jae is still peeved at him for the press conference stunt, she agrees to a chat. Moon-ho apologizes for putting her in a bad position, then explains how a close hyung recently died, and that he thinks he knows who killed him. Then there’s another guy who used to be close to him in childhood, who has been out of touch for three days.

Min-jae’s understandably frosty with him and tells him impatiently to get to the point. Moon-ho’s answer is a bit surprising—that she is the only name saved in his phone as a friend, and today he’s here to talk to a friend. “Because I have nobody to talk to.”

Min-jae notes that despite Moon-ho’s image as a fearless figure, she knows he’s actually the opposite: “You only ever fight when you won’t get hurt. You run away when you meet someone frightening, using an appropriate excuse.” She tells him it’s nothing to be ashamed of, however, “Since we’re all like that.”

Young-shin and Jong-soo get busy working on the Moon-shik story, and in between interviews she tries to track down Bong-soo at home using his resumé address, which turns out to be nonexistent. She sends him messages chiding him for skipping work when they’re short-staffed, her voicemails going from concerned to stern to threatening, warning that he’s missed his forgiveness window.

But by the fifth day, her voice is scared as she sits in the dark, asking, “Did I… do something wrong? Is it because I said I would wait that you can’t come? Should I have said I wouldn’t wait… that you shouldn’t worry? Should I cancel what I said?”

ABS schedules a talk with Moon-shik as a live broadcast, and Moon-ho decides to use that as Someday’s next broadcast. As soon as Moon-shik answers a question on air, within the next ten minutes, Someday will counter that answer.

Of course, that requires them to know what questions will be asked. But Moon-ho knows his brother will only answer questions that have been prepped in advance, and turns to his spy, asking if he’d like to be a double agent. Jong-soo would NOT, thank you very much, but really, there’s no refusing. He nervously agrees.

Moon-ho finds Young-shin still huddled in the dark, and she jumps up guiltily. He asks for her phone, and she assumes she’s in trouble and promises not to make any more personal calls on the job, only to have him punch in a number—it’s Myung-hee’s. He gives permission to use his name in asking for an interview, and Young-shin excitedly hurries off to make the call.

At home, Myung-hee heads into her husband’s empty office and tries opening his desk drawers. They’re locked shut, to her disappointment—but she catches a glimpse of something mounted to the underside of the desk. A button.

She presses it, and bookshelves slide open to reveal the secret space behind it, where the hidden TV screens are mounted. That’s when she gets Young-shin’s call, and more surprising than her request is the news that Moon-ho is her boss at Someday—all this while, she thought he was still at the broadcast station. Wow, she has really been kept cut off from the world.

Myung-hee’s also surprised that Moon-ho would have given her number to a reporter, as he knows that she doesn’t meet people. But she likes the sound of Young-shin’s voice and asks for time to consider, and Young-shin thanks her enthusiastically.

Min-ja sends Dae-yong on the rounds to track down all of Jung-hoo’s vehicles, trying to pinpoint his whereabouts. But everything looks untouched, and Min-ja deduces that this means Jung-hoo isn’t moving at all, which suggests he’s holed himself up at home. Dae-yong offers to go in person, but Min-ja says that even if she showed up there, she couldn’t get inside without Jung-hoo’s permission.

Next thing you know, ajumma charges into the Chae family cafe (yesssssssss) like she owns the place, ordering ajusshi to open half an hour early and demanding a female server. Haha. I love how she doesn’t explain a thing, and just lets them think she’s a weirdo.

Min-ja imperiously motions Young-shin aside to take her order, and Young-shin complies, despite her bafflement. Once Young-shin sits down, ajumma asks if she recognizes her voice, and repeats her words from her previous call to jog her memory.

Young-shin gasps upon recognition, suddenly alert and pelting her with questions. She says that Bong-soo’s been unreachable for days, her worry obvious.

Ajumma asks for her phone and links it to a device, fiddling with it as she tells her that Bong-soo’s been immobile for six days, probably not eating. She’s certain he won’t let her in, which leaves one option: to force him to open the door himself.

Understanding what she’s getting at, Young-shin asks tearfully, “Is he… okay? Is he not okay?” (I notice she’s now calling him “that person”—her way of referring to the Healer—instead of Bong-soo.) She grabs ajumma’s hand and begs her to tell her where to find him.

Ajumma notes Young-shin’s vehement reaction and replies, “I had to see your eyes.” Then she hands her back the phone, all the information there at her fingertips.

Young-shin follows the directions to Jung-hoo’s building, her lock-picking skills coming in handy in getting past the first locked door. She heads up the elevator, through the dilapidated warehouse floor, up some crumbling stairs, and to a seeming dead end. There’s nowhere to go from here, but the signal on her phone indicates that this is where she should be.

So Young-shin starts tapping on the walls and calling out for Bong-soo. Getting no response, she pulls out her tools and finds a stethoscope, using it to listen through the wall… and then she hears something click. A sign dangling on the opposite wall moves, and when she moves it again, the wall springs open.

Cautiously, she steps inside the inner lair—and there he is, in bed, looking half-dead.

Young-shin races to his side, and as she reaches to call for an ambulance, Jung-hoo’s eyes slowly open. She tells him gently, “Bong-soo-ya, I’m here.”

He sighs, “Daebak.” Which, all things considered, is hilarious. He reaches his hand out to touch her face, wondering at this dream. He murmurs that he’s cold, and at that she climbs in bed with him and cradles his head in her arms. It’s incredibly sweet. And as she holds him close, he snuggles into her side.

Some time later, he wakes up, alone in bed. Young-shin comes up holding a ladle (and are those his clothes she’s wearing?), holding it out for him to taste.

He struggles to get up, not at all happy to see her. She disregards his displeasure and informs him that she’s put in a personal day at work and intends to stay till tomorrow, and that he’ll eat her cooking whether he likes it or not.

He tells her wearily that this is no place for her, and that she should leave: “Forget this place, and don’t come back.”

His demeanor is cold and uninviting, and Young-shin looks at him intently and asks if this is the real him. Bong-soo didn’t talk like that, “But you’re a little scary.” She informs him that it’s dark and late, so she’ll leave tomorrow if he wants.

Ignoring his surliness, Young-shin sets him up comfortably and presents him with dinner. His mood darkens further as he grabs Young-shin’s things, thrusting them at her and pushing her toward the exit.

She whirls out of reach, refusing to leave, and he’s frankly too weak to do much else. Staggering closer, he asks in exasperation, “Why do you have so little fear?”

She replies, “I’m not afraid of you.” He points out that he’s hiding more from her than she could even guess, and she answers, “I don’t care.” He fires back, “Are you an idiot?”

“Don’t send me away,” she says. “If you send me away, you’ll cry forever.”

He says bleakly, “I could get you hurt.” She shakes her head, full of certainty: “No, you won’t get me hurt. Never.”

He struggles with himself, then grabs her wrist to drag her out. But she stops him, turning him toward her and pulling him into a hug. “Don’t send me away,” she asks again.

Jung-hoo’s face crumples in tears, and then he buries his face in her neck and grabs tight.

She holds him like that for a long moment, and then pulls back to wipe his tears from his face. She kisses him.

COMMENTS

So many things to write about, and they’re not even about that kiss! (Although, eeee, that kiss!)

I was really happy with where this episode took Moon-ho—even as far as yesterday I wasn’t sure what direction he would ultimately take, but today solidified his place standing alongside the Healer. I know he’d declared his intention to work together in the last episode, but it took seeing his old hyung cold and dead on that slab to finally cut the cord, and to realize that his brother had in fact crossed the line fully, that he couldn’t spare him from justice. I don’t think he was necessarily waiting for his brother to redeem himself, but he had enough hope that he wasn’t so far gone.

So now that he knows Moon-shik would (and has) killed, he’s finally ready to take the stand he’s been waffling on taking for the past twenty years. Moon-ho really is the linchpin in this entire story, because even now he possesses more information than anybody else, and it isn’t until he makes the decision that our mother-daughter reunion can start on its path. I suppose if he had had his brother’s ambition his kind of masterminding might be an ominous thing, but as Min-jae rightly points out, Moon-ho is actually rather timid. Good-intentioned, but lacking the courage to fight the big fight.

I guess that’s why he needs Healer and Young-shin on his team to see through the final takedown of the Elder. And while it sucks to have Jung-hoo so shaken by the loss of Teacher, it’s the perfect narrative catalyst to bring them together—because till now, they’ve shared the general stance of being anti-Moon-shik, but differed in their personal motivations. Jung-hoo doesn’t care about the Elder beyond what he does to people he loves, so he isn’t swayed by Moon-ho’s appeals for greater justice. Now, though, Teacher’s death provides a link, and I’m excited to see how these two work together from here on out. One brotherly bond may be severed, but who says another one can’t be formed? (As for the baddies, we’re still unclear on what exactly the Elder does, but based on what we know thus far, I’m imagining a shadow society of elites who manipulate all aspects of society to benefit themselves—I’m thinking Kishokai of Gaksital, for instance.)

I loved how the show depicted Jung-hoo’s reaction to losing Teacher, which felt real and raw, and bolstered by acting that totally made me cry along with the characters. There was an immediacy to Jung-hoo’s grief that I found powerful, and am so happy to see Ji Chang-wook become this character so wholly.

More than the kiss itself (although again, eeee!), I was moved by Jung-hoo’s reaction to Young-shin’s stubborn insistence on staying with him—the anger, confusion, fear, and eventual acceptance. Most of the time, noble idiocy in dramaland arises when a character pushes someone away “for their own good” in a situation where that angst is unnecessary, hence the idiocy part of the term. But it’s not noble idiocy when the reasons are credible, and it makes perfect sense that Jung-hoo’s reaction to losing one of the last loved ones in his life is to shut down entirely, especially when he blames himself for that death.

The heartbreaking thing is that the Teacher did totally die for him, indirectly; I don’t think he knew he was going to die, but you get the sense that Teacher would willingly do it again and feel it was worth the cost. He wasn’t able to protect the baby bears through the end of their lives, but he made good on his promise by protecting them through the end of his. But to Jung-hoo, all he sees is that people around him die, and that’s devastating in a twofold way: first, he costs good people their lives, and second, he then has to live in a world where they’re dead.

So he’s become deathly afraid of building any sort of meaningful relationship, because every time it burns him, it cuts deeper and deeper. Yet in comes charging this girl who refuses to let him bully her away, informing him that she will stay put, and refusing to accept his fear of hurting her. Moreover, she isn’t about to let him sink into self-ruin, and insists on taking care of him. Young-shin is totally badass in all the best ways, and she just keeps getting better.

I love how he sees her next to his bed and sighs that it must be a dream, and only in his half-conscious state does he allow her to come close. Despite the fact that they totally got to snuggle in bed together, I appreciate that the scene wasn’t sexy in the least, but more poignantly sweet, letting our damaged hero find some comfort while his guard is lowered. When he’s fully awake, you can see how much he wishes he could believe her while his head warns him not to… but thankfully for all of us, there’s only so much denial you can handle before you cave and have to accept it already. (Accept the truth, kisses and all!) Somehow it feels fitting that he gets to be with his girl against the backdrop of his imagined paradise, ’cause I think he’s doing just fine where he is in his reality, once he finally allows himself his honesty.

I love this show. I think a lot of people already said that, but I also wanted to express my feelings.
All the actors are VERY GOOD at conveying the state of mind of their characters, and I feel totally pulled into the story. Like when CYS and Ajhumma were in the cafe, I had goosebumps on my arms, because I was totally feeling the concern of YS. I won't even talk about the last scenes, when YS is at JH's place : my body temperature was slowly getting higher and I was totally squeeing (it's a normal reaction right ?).
Apart from the writing and the acting, another thing that I find awesome is how they play the songs of the drama. I am quite sensible to that, and I noticed that sometimes, when a scene is very important (serious revelation for example), there is NO MUSIC at all (like, the scene when JH and MH are in the parking lot in ep 12, the cafe scene in ep 13, the scene at the morgue in this ep). And not putting music in those scenes enhances the feelings : you can actually here the actors breathe (esp. JCW) and that increase what we viewers feel (is what I think).
I just... Don't know what more to say, I don't have other words to describe how much I love this show.
Monday, just come ! <3 Healer <3

I didn't think about that at all. Thanks for bringing it to our attention @Lu. And I think what you said is true and I am going to go back and watch those scenes because it does make it more meaningful. And they are careful with where they place the music to convey those strong emotions.

Thanks @Alienkay for your comment ! Sometimes in Kdrama, I think they put a lot of background music, and it may drown the dialogues. The first time I actually noticed in Healer was the scene with Moon Ho, because there was such an intensity that I wondered : "why do I feel so strongly for them ?", and then they put back the music and I realised that before, I could hear their breathing, the sound of their clothes, when JH hit MH... And add that to their stellar acting, i was gone xD
The songs are beautiful, and they do know how to use them well :)

OMG!!! This episode literally blew my mind!!! :D

So many precious scenes and strong emotions our characters have to deal with. It's absolutely awesome how the directors put all of it in one episode! Writer-nim, you desrved a dinner from all of us! :D

Some people might find JH's reaction on the Teacher's death to be a bit rush, but I totally liked it because it seems natural. If you lose someone dear to you, of course that your natural reaction would be the same as JH's. You would get in the car and go to beat the hell out of Moon-Shik :D. In these situations people usually don't think rationally and let their emotions or anger lead the way. That's why his rush reaction was so natural.

Also his lack of strenght to deal with all these feelings and pain, being totally crashed and having no will to live, are so strong and beautifully expressed that we all can feel with JH. Fortunately he has YS who is willing to stay by his side and give him the strength he needs in this moments. I wonder, in reality, how people who have complicated lives and devastating periods actually survive and if they have someone like YS by their side?

I don't think it was rushed at all. The sequences of the scenes and the plot have made sense to me even up to this point. What would have happened if Teacher didn't die? I loved Teacher and JH but it made sense to me. Teacher was purposely protecting JH at the same time and he went down knowing that he had no other way of protecting JH. So the killing of his character was great although I miss him.

What made it super hard for JH with the death of teacher, now that I see it is that.....everyone leaves JH. But for the first time...someone came back. CYS never left him so she is a first for not leaving him but teacher left and came back. His mother and father have not come back (granted his father can't). Ahjumma is there for him but not a physical aspect. Teacher coming back and then JH feeling the regrets makes sense. And this is builds up momentum for the ending so I cannot wait! Don't disappoint us! Writes, you haven't so far so please keep up the good work!

One part of his reaction that I liked was that he looked like he was actually zoned out. I recall two times... when my dad was sick and when he passed away... it was like I had an out-of-body experience and everything around me was in slow-motion. I couldn't think at all. I've never had that experience any other time. That look on his face... is probably the same look I had.

Totally agree. People who did experience death of family a member or a friend can understand and find theselves in these scenes.

First when you hear the news you can't kind of believe in it, but slowly as you process things and realize what the heck happened, you zoom out and it's not easy to control your body anymore. Knees and legs especially. Pain in the chest and losing the breath.

@ Bojana

It becomes harder after the deceased has been laid to rest, buried or cremated or whatever as appropriate. For then, you see the the stuff that the deceased would be doing or the places that the dead would have gone to , if she/he was alive, yes? That's when it hits you hardest, the realisation that she/he walks on this earth no more. That's when you miss them most, yes? :-(

Exactly! But the last moments you spent with that person are so vivid. And often people start thinking if they could have spent more time with them that day or if they could have done things differently. This is the moment which JCW expressed so well. He regrets because he didn't spend that day with Teacher or at least didn't have some quality time instead of being angry and furious. Because if he knew that Teacher is going ot die he wouldn't have said things he said. Of course he had a reason to be angry. But no matter how much a person know that it's not their fault because someone died, they will have feelings of regret. This is a psychological thing.

I was distracted, The whole time she's hugging him in bed, I was thinking it's been six days since he moved or ate, doesn't he stink, and during the kiss, I was wondering if he had brushed his teeth.
I don't know why my focus was on this instead of complete attention to squeeeeeing . I'm bummed.

You know there are these places that print a photo on a tee or sweat shirt or towel.
I'm going to bring some of his pics to make tee and sweats for myself. If I dare not wear them to go out, at least I can wear them around the house. Yeah! Thanks for that light bulb moment.

You're welcome! :D My imagination is going wild every time I watch this drama lol.

Yeah I was thinking to do the same! :D

0

Depending where you go, you might have a problem doing that. Technically, printers aren't allowed to do that with copyrighted images, which will be all of them that you find online unless it is by a fan at a fan meet or something like that.

0

@Crysta,
How about a screen cap? Would that be alright, u think?

0

@KDaddict well as long as you will wear it only in your house nobody will know about it! :D lol

0

Omg lol great idea...hope you aren't married or attached. I'm sure any guy would be against you wearing ji chang wook's tees lol :)

0

That would still be under copyright.

It is for personal use, so I don't think you would have a problem once you get one. It just a matter of finding a place that will print it. I'm sure there are places that don't pay that close of attention...

0

@KDaddict

I would print it! If they want they can come and check my whole closet, panties, sweaters, t-shirts etc... Wait! Did I say panties? :D lol Take that one out lol. It would be too much to have him on the panties hahahaha.

Well if they want to come and check I'll probably be busted but at least I will go to the Police with a smile on my face and JCW on my T-Shirt hahahaha lol.

Don't worry. Chinese people do everything! They might change a letter or two but hey, it would be still him on the photo lol :D (I saw some funny copies of famous brands. For example Dove is known for cosmetics, shower gels etc, but in China I found a chocolate with completely same logo lol)

@Crysta

I know it's copyright but in this case KDaddict will not print and sell to other people. It's for personal use. I hope it's possible to find some place where we can print it out. Otherwise I have to find someone with artistic skills to paint him on my wall hahahaha. That won't be exactly copyright lol. :D

0

Making an original painting from a screen cap or photo would actually be alright like how fanderay does :)

0

Hmm my take on that scene was Det.Yoon is suspicious that MH may be working with Healer, not necessarily thinking that MH is Healer himself. I think it's more like after seeing MH's reaction to Teacher's death, he may be thinking that teacher could be the healer.

And he suspect someone went to morgue, he may check the cctv

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

The detective can't suspect Moon Ho being the Healer yet because MH came after all the hospital people were knocked out, but he can definitely suspect that he's working with Healer. MH wasn't able to provide a good explanation of how he quickly knew of the Teacher's death and came to the morgue. Right now, the person who came before MH is the main suspect.

0

Required fields are marked *

I hope not! Teacher has already done that and died in the process. I do not want another beloved character take the blame upon himself and die while the real bad guys are out there playing with innocent lives...
Det Yoon is getting suspicious of KMH- I think only after he told him Healer was a respected hyung. But if Det Yoon has any brains left he would know how to do a proper investigation by now.

Yes ^ I don't want any one to die. With the death of one character, every one is already emotionally exhausted.
BESIDES, Healer did not kill go sung chul. Nor did he kill hwang jae gook. Those crimes were not committed by him. So, I don't understand why Moon ho should shoulder the blame.

The Ending theory for me

I believe that just like their parents they will become the Healers of society. They will finish what their parents didn't finish. Jung hoo, moon ho, and young shin and of course ahjumma will be working together to clean society from corruption.

And hopefully a happy ending for our beautiful young couple.

What are your thoughts and theories for the endings? :)

@ Turkish Rose

Your ending is of course the preferred one for me too. To have the noble objectives of the people in the photograph come full circle and reach fulfilment in their children, would really round out this tale and make it even more perfect.

Growingbeautifully I hope so dear. But what I really hope for it that our amazing writer gave a better and more incredible ending for us. An ending that will leave us satisfied and able to continue our lives without healer lol :)

0

@Turkish Rose
I can see your ending happening. The last couple episodes of the drama can focus on them trying to bring down the Elder's criminal organization down.

I just have a feeling that Moon-ho will die protecting our main leads. While he didn't commit any sins directly, he didn't say or do anything even though he knew about the corruption that was happening. Moon-ho probably wanted to protect his family and possibly didn't want to believe how far his brother has fallen. I can see him paying for this with his life.

United, even though I wish he wouldn't die, but I think your right. The character he portrays is a tragic character, and that is why he has to die. We have a saying that goes.. the one who is silent when injustice takes place, is as though he is the satan who is committing the injustice.

I just realized, the part where Moon Ho told Jung Hoo that it's okay to cry. That's what Myung-hee said to him too, that's what she taught him, and there's him using those same words to the boy he used to take care off. That's so bittersweet, the connection between these people.

We get these little things that influence our main characters because they were either said to them or taught by the other characters. Like Young Shin is the way she is because the kindness of her adopted father, that he told her to believe in people. Just one person will do. And Jung Hoo practice the things that his teacher taught him about the best bait is yourself. I LOVE things like these. Because sometimes what we are is a accumulation of the people around us. GOOD SOLID CHARACTERIZATION RIGHT THERE.

I have so much respect for the writing and directing - each scene, each line is delivered with so much attention to details. Nothing is wasted. And the way they dress, talk and move... Everything just makes you feel as if they're real people, with their own unique, quirky personalities.

0

Required fields are marked *

Love the way you made that point, @Julia!

Yes, it's the best combination of nature/nurture right there. These kids have the best qualities of their natural parents, as well as the values imparted by the Teachers, Noonas, Samchons and Ahjummas around them!

It's a stark contrast to Moon Shik - he was always surrounded by his 4 friends, but never really part of their group or their cause. He was never open to learning. Now he chooses to live in a delusional glass tower with his wife caged by his side. He hasn't grown or evolved.

At least Moon Ho has always consciously tried not to live like his brother. And Jung Hoo, even in the midst of his grief stricken rage, tries to live by what Teacher would have wanted (ie don't turn into a murderer).

It's just a theory, but maybe Moon Shik always felt uncertain in his self-identity and had an inferiority complex towards his friends? They were passionately living their dreams, while he was just the son of the junkyard owner. Maybe that's also why he latched on to Myung Hee, and became a newspaper owner (even though he wasn't interested in journalism or the truth) and is trying to become a politician (even though he doesn't know a thing about it and isn't qualified)?

Fourth, forgive me if someone has already pointed this out but about Jung-soo who was told to spy on Moon Ho - what kind of reports has he been given Moon Shik? I know everyone knows at Some Day news that he is a spy but hasn't the other side realized yet that he hasn't given them anything of note because Some Day news was able to infiltrate the mayor's conference? (Had to put this down before work even if I'm late because this takes precedence)

Another shout-out to the writer--the flashback on Teacher cooking the seaweed soup for teenage Jung Hoo, and JH asks for cake. This connects to the day when Teacher came back and asked JH whether he liked fruit or chocolate. JH remembered then that it was his birthday. Writer-nim really pays attention to such details.

Am sad, though, that Healer was not able to return to his lair in time to share the cake with Teacher.

0

Required fields are marked *

@dramabliss it was what made it doubly tragic, compounded by the fact that JH feels it's his fault since he was the one who called the Old Man back, and was the one asking all these uncomfortable questions, and he had wanted to go back for cake, but kept missing Teacher cos of the elevator incident, and then later when he saw him, all that came out from him sounded hostile and angry (which was not surprising for him at that point in time...but still plays into his feeling of regret). It's one of those moments where we don't know what we have got - until we lose it.

Though I think the most likely thing that happens next would be JungHoo fainting in her arms hahaha. I mean, the first time he kissed her he alr lost his footing and was stumbling from the shock of the moment. Can you imagine the effect of a passionate kiss (initiated by her!!!) + not eating for 6 days + pain-induced grief from losing Sabo???

Then she'll most likely guide him into the lovely white bed and they'll spend the night holding hands as they did when they were kids/ cuddling.

I don't know how they'll fair with so much sadness and danger going on around them but I hope we get to see some lighter, cutesy romancing happening!

I'm worried about Moon-ho too. But just in the sense that he will give anything to protect the 'two cubs' so much so that he'll get hurt or worse trying to save them. I have a feeling Moon-shik will save his own brother though..

I am expecting a lot of fanservice in the next episode. JH and YS making out, making house, making bab... I mean, making dishes! cooking! I mean cooking!

And if they feel like it even go out on a date.

They will also have to do a lot of talking, especially JH. For a long time it has just been YS who has been exposing everything about her past and her feelings. Now, JH has to come clean too. I hope YS will not settle for anything less. They have to now act together and move on from a clean slate. It is important that JH recognizes YS as a true partner, not just because she is equally skilled and brave, but because he needs her. He needs her to be beside him, working alongside him and together with him. Both of them are incomplete without the other. And with everything they have yet to face, they must not let go of each other because together they are invincible.

One of the things (among many) that I love about this drama is the use of appropriate choice of background music without exaggerating the emotion that the scene needs to convey. Take the first scene of this episode, for example. When Jung Hoo found out that the hand hanging from the stretcher belongs to Teacher, the music played is a very touching rendition of Ave Maria. Words are not needed to explain the pain that the scene brings, the music serves the purpose effectively. My heart aches so much, even when I think back to the scene all I heard is the choir singing "Ave Maria...." so very beautifully. Another example is the part when Myung-Hee discovers the hidden TV screen and at the same time Young Shin called her to ask for an interview. The music picks up a faster tempo, and this background music usually used for scenes that hint at another climax. I found it very appropriate since it hinted at Myung-Hee's beginning in taking part in the fight for justice, starting with agreeing to open up on her doubts concerning who the real Moon Shik is to a sweet-voiced reporter.

That's the beauty of working with diligent people. The producing team seem like a bunch of smart guys who keep improving and perfecting their parts of the job, be it the music, the cinematic technique, the editing...
This drama had done all the right things. Jal-hae-sseo-yo, Healer team!

thanks for the recap JB.
loved this episode. i guess not many things happened in terms of the plot development, but i think this episode is very important as it will help progress the future developments. now that moonho finally has realised how deep his brother has fallen into the evil pit hole, he's finally going to attack MS&Elder head on without any more stalling. ho0h! things are going to get real good in next episode(i mean its already amazing but this show is going go beyond that). I'm dying to know what happened in 1992.

I've said this for the nth time before and I'm going to say it again: Ji chang wook your acting is just....idk there's no word out there to describe how great you are. sometimes i even forget that he's just acting. that scene when he saw sabo's lifeless face... :'S *mind=blown* he's acting was so realistic. i loved how he didn't instantly breakdown and started bawling at the site of his dead sabo. it started off with denial, then the slow final acknowledgement and i think this is how most people in his situation would react(I've never been through such situation, so i apologise if I'm getting ahead of myself and making ignorant assumptions). plus, i remember he said he has never cried for another "human"(i know he cried while watching the leopard documentary) ever since his mum left him, so i found it very believable and understandable when he just shut off the world and didn't cry his heart out. he locked away those human emotions for so long that he just doesn't know how to react anymore so instead he just decided to do what he's used to. Isolate himself from the rest of the world.
Poor Junghoo :'(

but yayy to CYS for successfully finding her way through the Maze and warming jw while he was cold and cooking for him and not leaving him while he asked her to and for hugging our poor little lost puppy and taking the initiative to kiss him. So many Ands, she pleased me with numerous things in this episode. well done CYS! you're officially my no1 "best female lead in a kdrama".
oh and i haven't forgotten moonho! it was so touching when he said "just cry. its okay to cry" to JH. I've got a feeling that him and jh are going to have the "father-son" relationship in the future. writernim you better give us cute and lighthearted scenes between these two before the drama ends!!

woops didn't realise i typed so much ^w^
i promise, this is my last sentence: new smexy JCW header <3 <3 <3 sdjkghkasdjgsagjkdsbgajsk *jumps in the drool pool *.

A Daesang is decided by critics. PMY and JCW did win a Best Couple award at the KBS awards. I wonder if the show is going to be running for nominations at the end of the year.

Daesang is usually decided by the critics, but it's influenced by the popularity of the show. Not always the best actor wins the Daesang, but the winner is always one of the bests. Some ppl say that it's sometimes influenced by politics. MBC made an exception this year and allowed fans to vote for the Daesang winner.

@Fab
Since the Healer was already part of the 2014's end of the year awards, it won't be nominated for 2015's, but there are other awards like Baeksang Awards. I don't think JCW is good enough to win any Daesang, but I predict he will win some excellence award or at least some popularity award. I wonder Healer's production team know how popular this show is outside of Korea.

0

Allowing the fans to vote for the Daesang winner is a bad idea IMO. Most of the voters will be young people/fan girls that will sway the votes in their bias's favor. The results for last year weren't too bad though.

0

@united
Other than the Baeksang there are still the Drama Awards that are held around November I think(Healer didn't air yet), Healer/JCW could/should get nominated there too.

0

yeah, results for MBC 2014 daesang weren't that bad since i agreed with lee yoori being the daesang winner lolll and so did all the ahjummas (they predicted it when she had the guerilla date)

JCW's healer performance might not be enough for a daesang but i would have nominated him for one if it was his empress ki performance... even though i also really liked HJW and JJM's (in the beginning) performances

0

Chincha?????

WOW!!!! Then he will get nominated I think :) If Kim soo Hyun (not sure about the name) can get daesang fo my love from star.. Then JCW has a strong chance :)

One other think I like about Healer is how the flashback scenes are distributed across the episodes. Each flashback gives us a little more information, a little more insight into the characters' connections and relationships, a little more of the backstory...little pieces of the puzzle that drop in strategic places to make the whole picture a bit clearer each time. Another toast to Song Ji Na writer-nim! This means that even if they are doing live shoots, the script must have been well laid out already.

Also the actors playing the roles of characters in the past (in various ages, no less) are all excellent, e.g., that little girl (Ji-an) being coaxed out by would-be Dad, teen-age Jung-hoo, etc. etc.

I love how the flashbacks work in the show too. Flashbacks are great narrative devices when used correctly and I think that in Healer, they couldn't get any better. The flashbacks are shown in very appropriate situation with appropriate and sufficient information. I also like how the costume, colours and background is very 80s and 90s unlike other examples where flashbacks look exactly like the present

I think I might go on a Drama hiatus because nothing compares to Healer for me, and to make it even worse JCW and a lot of other actors I enjoy watching on the big screen are going to enlist soon.

I have come across many comments about comparing Healer to city Hunter... I just want to ask is there too many similarities or just because they belong to same genre of drama???

I also only got through a handful of City Hunter episodes. Maybe I didn't get through enough of them to understand the comparison? I think maybe just the vibe of what he wears and there's action scenes? Maybe it's preference too... in which my eggs all go into Healer's basket. JCW acting in Healer is outstanding and in a league of its own. Argh... I just love that guy!

The background of the big bad guys is at the centre of the show. LMH is more like Zoro than Healer. He goes around punishing bad guys wearing a face mask.
It was more action packed than Healer, and the action scenes were very well done. There's was also a time for romance. PMY was the lead girl. Also important are the lead characters who were all likeable!

Well there are many similarities - the genre, the set up - as in the younger generation trying to solve what happened in the parents' time, both heroes are quite similar looking, there are sidekick ahjusshi/ahjumma, a love interest that doesn't know what hero does - to name just a few.
Still, the direction of these two stories is almost opposite. Where CH is dark, angsty and all about revenge, Healer is...well, about healing. And kisses. :P

@fantasy
They're not actually that similar. Unlike City Hunter, Healer is not a vigilante. He's like a mercenary that is hired by people to do their errands. They're similar because they focus on a character who hides his identity and has an alter-ego. LMH acted like a playboy like Batman/Bruce Wayne in City Hunter while The Healer acts like a bumbling timid guy like Clark Kent/Superman. City Hunter is a lot more focused on the action and the thriller while Healers is more focused on the relationships and feel good moments. I liked City Hunter, but prefer JCW over LMH.

Loved the way that he struggled and slowly started to hyperventilate when she told him not to send her away. He literally looked so stuck because he wants to be close to her and be with her but knows it's dangerous for her. So for JCW to express that that way when she said that, it was really real and realistic. Gosh, he's so amazing.

I watched Empress Ki for fun because I couldn't find another drama to watch. It actually is really good. It is fast paced right from the get-go. To be honest, I didn't know much about JCW before Empress Ki. I watched it and was routing for the Joo Ji Mo and Ha Ji Won because there relationship was cute. Then Ji Chang Wook comes into the story in about ep 3 and is pathetically weak. But he was tolerable and he made his character a really lovable character despite his many flaws. It was an exceptionally well executed character portrayal on JCW's part.

There are many many cute scenes of JCW and HJW. He loved her from the beginning and I loved how she gradually fell in love with him.

Episodes to recommend? Hm....there are many and JCW and HJW scenes are scattered in each episode. I love rewatching all their parts together and it is always a blast.

yes, for the pairing, i really like JJM and HJW together (or her with Tal Tal) but for individuals, i like JCW the emperor by himself and his one sided love for HJW's character. i just love the way he looks at HJW, so helpless and full of yearning/desire.

my favorite scenes are often tragic since they are so beautifully and wonderfully executed by JCW... esp when he went alittle cuckoo in ep 43 i think

0

The kiss underwater in the bathtub! That's my favorite scene between JCW and HJW in Empress Ki. I was holding my breath the entire time, as if I, too, was underwater...:))

0

I initially started the drama because of JCW but before i knew it, i was pulled into the emlress ki world. I was so infatuated by it, just like with healer. I was sooo desperate that i opened a soompi account so that i could talk to other avid fans there lol
so yup the drama itself is really good. its like jcw is the cake and the storyline is the icing on top ; D

As for the episode recommendation, like alienkay said its scattered all over the place. Since its a long drama there are a lot more characters so its not all just jcw. Its probably best to just make a start from ep 1. Jcw doesn't apper untill ep 3 but you'll still definitely enjoy the first 2 episode without him. i know i did. I normally like watching historical dramas so if you enjoy watching dramas from this genre then im pretty sure you'll love empress ki.

So far I've watched it maybe 6or 7 times maybe more.I have a friend who got hooked and she watched it raw, with me as the narrator coz u know not everyone can stand reading subs.I'll say it again, it's daebak and I don't even like historical dramas.

Can anyone tell me how the door opened when JCW was asleep in bed? It was clear from Min-ja that the only way the door would open once Young-shin got there would be if JCW opened it from the inside. How did this happen?? Any ideas?

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah that seemed off. JH was asleep, it didn't look like he could move. But I figured the door can be opened by that blue sign(don't know what it says). I think it was triggered when YS was listening around with her stethoscope- so all she had to do is yank it for the door to open up...

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I noticed she also took a round object besides the stethoscope, I think it's probably a magnet (?), and that magnet triggered someting (maybe the door handle?), that is connected to the blue sign, so the blue sign moved.

The door should be able to open from the outside. If not, how would Jung Hoo get inside?

Was there another scene involving this door, when Teacher came to visit him there? I only have a vague memory of it, I'm not sure if there was such a scene...hmmmm

Should I rewatch this drama all over again from ep 1?

Don't have time, I have a life...100x

Required fields are marked *

The door opens from the outside, by moving that sign clockwise. Healer was shown doing this in an earlier episode. I guess Ahjumma didn't know this, though she knew how the maze can be navigated to get to the main door (this is what she gave to CYS). So she also thought no one can get through that door without Healer opening it from inside.

When CYS used that gadget with the stethoscope which looked like a safe cracking gadget and she scanned the door, there was a click and the sign kind of moved/jumped. When CYS turned that thing, the door opened.

This process was not shown when Teacher crashed into Healer's lair. We assume that he was able to deduce the process because he was able to get in.

CYS told SJH that it took her almost a day to get inside--that meant hours locating the building, navigating through the maze and unlocking doors within the maze, before she got to the main door.

This all the more makes her such a badass character. I guess there was a reason for the writer to include those ex-convict characters who taught her the unlikely skills of picking locks, cracking safes, picking pockets, etc shown much earlier in the drama. These details were not there just for icing. Again, kudos to writer-nim.

Thanks for the wonderful recap Javabeans...:)

first things first...that ending is so exasperating...aiiissshh...world be damned. I think everyone in my building heard my scream and irritated sigh. I was not screaming and shouting that the kiss got cut. I was literally begging that show to continue on for hours and hours. I never want healer to end.

The ending was like this beautiful seaside visit where you long to immerse your toes into the cold water. when you actually end up at the edge and are finally ready to immerse your dainty toes the sea becomes dry or something.. I was so unsatisfied with the ending because the show has been making me cry for the past 2 episodes. Now they do this ending and im frustrated, edgy and so irritated. wae wae wae cant i get my OTP having some decent momentstogether?

Song Ji Nah surely knows how to tease us. She gives us 2 minutes worth of the sweetest scene between our OTP and then leaves us high and dry in the filed. I would have been happy if they had not kissed and just ended on snuggling together on the bed. would have been the Best ending ever. I want MOAR...i want these two to never get out and just stay in that cacooon and make those 2 babies, buy those cats, get a dog and raise goldfishes.

I want a happy ending...and i want it to last forever..like our bongsookah's eternal love.

other things i loved this episode

1. background on ahjumma was so heartbreaking..looking at her life reminded me of Cha Seung Won and his broken marriage in You are all surrounded. Being a cop means that your family comes only second to your job and you can't even do something about it. The sad part is that nothing can be undone and the utter shittiness of the world that ahjumma has to cover it up. the fact that she cleans up so well and looks so charming is a bonus. We need her love interest now. She needs love too.

2. Teacher's message was heartbreaking for me. He was so right in all the right ways and his love shines through that Interrogation.

3. Bongsookie falling down and cowering like a little child in pain. Ooooooof...it hurt to watch wookie like that. His tears hurt right in my kororo...he is one of those actors whose tears make my own tears come. That is just a testament to the talented actor he is. I see no Ji Chang Wook but i see ouri Healer crying over his lost guardian. He does justice to Healer so well. Every scene is etched in my mind and now he is immortal in my mind being the invincible Healer. But oh Healer...your name doesn't mean you heal easily yourself..i understood his pain when he shut everyone out. The hurt, the blame-game, the acceptance of his actions. That's a soul which is begging for so much love and understanding.

I loved that CYS reaches out to Bongsookah so sweetly. Her hugs, her grabs and her pure care is the only thing that can bring our Bongsookah out of the infernal torment of his excruciating pain.
BongSookah reaches to the deepest parts of my soul. He...

*continued*
BongSookah reaches to the deepest parts of my soul. He is written with so much depth. He isn't just a character in a kdrama but so much more. He breathes beside us, inside our hearts, almost as if he was a breathing living individual, our very dear friend, our next door neighbor, he could be anyone.

All of us are trapped in the circuitous torment of our pain and all of us need someone, just a single soul will do to reach out and assure us we are not alone. CYS by doing that wins the heart of so many. She is one of the best written heroines in our recent time. She aint unique but she sure brings a whole lot of different qualities earlier missing in other flat heroines. these words

CYS: Don't make me leave. If you make me leave, you'll cry your whole life.
JH: I... can hurt you
CYS: no, you would never hurt me. Ever.

Those words just show their relationship. I mean she knows how important she is to him and she knows that she loves him back. Their relationship aint based on sheer looks or love games. Its as straight as it comes just a tad complex in some ways due to his double identity.

DID anyone notice the symbols?...all the time i see their matching clothes along with hands.
Now hands throughout the novel take on a whole new persona that now i obsessed with hands. All i do and replay countless times are the hand scenes. Wookie has such beautiful hands, just like a man's should be. Min Young also with her dainty hands compliments him well.

AH i ship them so hard. Can't they just date in real life and marry already?

Yes, I also think it was YS's doing, putting back JH phone together. By the look of his face, his expression after seeing his phone (like, kinda...irritated?), it's like THAT's the last straw, YS can't be more deeply involved in Healers life so he came to a final decision to send YS away.

And I believe Min ja never set foot in JH's place, no? I'm not sure if she doesn't know where it is or it's like against Healers rule or something.

End scene translation:

I always words interesting, and how substituting/replacing a word(s) change subtly/significantly.

Case in point:

JB gives the translation of the hurt conversation

He says bleakly, “I could get you hurt.” She shakes her head, full of certainty: “No, you won’t get me hurt. Never.”

The Viki subbers have it as 'I could hurt you' and 'No, you won't hurt me. Never'

Some would say that the meaning is the same, but I interpret a whole different feeling within those differences.

I hope the writer was trying to convey JB's interpretation, I like that one better...

JB's interpretation is correct. Viki's or any other subbed web sites sometimes have slightly wrong interpretation :)

I also liked JB's interpretation better. That's why it's useful to read the recaps here, al lot of times the real meaning of lines and subtext gets lost in translation in the videos.

i also saw it being subbed as "you wont let me get hurt. ever" which would have more meaning for me

Required fields are marked *

yeah, i like jb's translation better too. jb's recaps always convey the nuances well :3

To get into the detail of the line:

It definitely isn't "I could hurt you / You won't hurt me," which carries an active element, where he hurts her directly. That meaning is not in the original line.

"I could let you get hurt" is a closer translation, although that carries an element of permissiveness, where he might allow for hurt to happen to her. That is also not in the original line.

"I could get you hurt" is the closest, because what the line literally says is that through Jung-hoo, she could become hurt. In this instance, he would be the reason she is hurt, but he would not be the one to do it.

Is anyone else having this problem? It's weird. I usually am watching 3 to 4 dramas at a time - usually at least two currently airing ones and one or 2 older ones, plus Running Man and Roommate and K-Pop Star 4....but I have NO energy to watch anything but HEALER...bits of episodes, fan-made videos, JCW appearances. It's like all the air has gone out of my love for dramas - and Healer is #100 watched in two years. I. Just. Can't get interested in anything else. It's not just gorgeous and talented JCW - it's the whole show. I still had two episodes of Pinocchio and Birth of a Beauty to go when I started watching Healer and when I went back to finish Pinocchio and BoB, I found them both so lame and insipid I couldn't go on. I also am stalled now in watching The King's Face. Just can't. Why is that? This has never happened to me before. It almost scares me. Any advice??

Lunatic4kids omg lol so true I swear I'm the same way. I'm always watching 3 or less drama at the same time. With healer, I have no time, I'm either searching the net about pics, news, etc or watching YouTube videos, or watching gifs on tumblr, reading about the show on Twitter, and different blogs, soompi.

When I'm not online I'm listening to their ost and also his Butterfly from the empress ki. I really wish ji chang wook can sing for healer

I also am having the same Healer symptoms as you. As many of you, this is the first time I'm actually commenting on any drama on Dramabeans :) I was watching P&P and have two last episodes to finish, but I just don't feel like watching it right now. I stopped other dramas as well and can't get excited about any other new ones starting this week!

My normal life is completely ruined(?) now and the first thing I check in the morning when I wake up is the DB site to see how many comments have come in for Healer!

Anyway, I just wanted to chime in that I am so glad of this community to collectively squee over this drama.

My problem exactly. I was in ep 13 of pinnochio and ever since ep 6 of healer came out I've stopped watching other dramas. (Well i am watching empress ki but ypu know jcw is in there so yhh lol)
Like you i normally watch follow 3 dramas at least at the same time but now its just healer healer healer...
i dont know what happened.
I guess healer REALLY(without any exagerration) has ruined us.

It brings tears to my eyes (right now in my office) to know that I'm not alone in this perplexing fog I seem to exist in these days. I don't understand it. All I know is how grateful I am for this forum and all of you going through the same thing I am. I think that if I had tried to watch Healer without an outlet to spew my thoughts, I might have gone mad. It's like we're all in a lifeboat together, helping each other survive. I'm hopelessly undone by this drama. There just aren't any words......but thank you all for being there. Our togetherness is a great comfort to me.

Oh my...I feel the exact same way! Thankfully other people feel like me too. I usually do that too and watch other dramas but the stakes are so high in Healer and everything is so awesome that other dramas aren't as exciting to me anymore. Now it's hard to watch other dramas because I am so invested in Healer so my weeks are always slow cause I'm only focused on Healer!

And what makes it harder is that because JCW is on the rise, there aren't that much videos on him yet so you run out of things to watch and things to read when you have read them all already.

I am starting to watch Smile Donghae because JCW. So watch his other dramas if you can. But I don't know why we are this way. Maybe it's because of the different elements that work well together: OTP, OST, writer, director, producer, supporting leads, storyline.

Thank God....I am not alone in this Healer craze. I beginning to really worry that I can never find another drama as good as Healer.

What are we all going to do when Healer finishes?? We can only hope that JCW makes another drama soon after...

Oh Healer has ruined us all. Once you're caught by the virus you can't really recover from it. I pretty much caved and decided for now to devote all of my free time to Healer.
I really like the shows I was following and will go back and finish them, but not before at least four weeks from now. Not just kdrama btw, it's also shows from the US that I am bailing on right now...

maybe you should give empress ki a try if you haven't watched that yet, i was more impressed by JCW's acting ability there than healer but i like healer, the drama better <3

I'm absolutely the same as all of you. Unexpectedly and shockingly, because it never happened before, I became an addict of this show and of this blog and all other shows paled. Not only that, nothing in the real or virtual world could/can, distract me from this show. Most waking thoughts are about it, all time revolves around it and everything else is an obstacle to getting back to the show and DB. Like most of us have said, 'This is crazy!' What happened to the rational, practical, responsible, mature person(s) that we are?

I feel I'm even more giddy now, than I ever was, as a youngster with a crush. In just the way that JH wanted to recklessly run out to touch his dead Teacher or to risk everything to kill MS, so too I am driven by inexorable feelings, longings, yearnings for this show, to take actions more extreme, than I've ever been before.

I guess it's true, the advice to not act on our feelings alone!!! LOL! It could be dangerous and hurt others.

Although I know that it is good and right that common sense and a sense of responsibility need to reassert themselves, and are doing just that, sadly ... it is with a pang that I note the 3 short weeks we have left to commune.

I'm glad to have all of you to share this wild jet boat ride with me. We can speed skimming over the wild and calm waters, flying up at sqeee times and crash back down at sad times. We can do those nifty 360 degree spins and zoom off in a different direction each time we dissect a scene or character and find another way to understand. At least for the length of this show, we are happily in the same boat together as some of you have also said, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I hope we will often keep meeting up in OT and elsewhere in DB. Better still, I hope that we can find another show that draws us together (but perhaps in a less obsessive way!! LOL!). Thank you ALL for reading/lurking, commenting, sharing, responding and being a part of this lovely community. I am extremely, even eternally grateful. :)

I know, that's what I'm worried about. Nothing can replace Healer. I think I'd rather keep re-watching Healer over and over again than watch anything else because no other show will make me feel so overwhelmed with happiness, emotion, I don't know what this feeling is. I'm just obsessed. It's kinda scary.

Indeed, I ve just look at wikidrama and almost all his dramas had great ratings
The Sons of Sol Pharmacy House ~45-50%
Smile DH ~40%
Warrior BDS ~20%
Empress Ki ~30%

Five Fingers was OK ~12-13%
only Bachelor's Vegetable Store (cable drama) and Hero were not good (1% on cable and 5% respectively)
Because of of these are week-end or daily or sageuk drama, he is not very popular ..
But I like that he continues to do musicals even if he is now lead actor in TV dramas :)

he might not had come up a lot if someone wasn't looking specifically for him, but trust me, if you'd have seen him in any of his drama, you WOULD be looking for him :D

he's improving in huge steps, and he wasn't bad to start with. i think his acting in live theater - even in a musical or more - is helping him project emotions with greater impact.

so impressive! and the role fits him perfectly too - allows him to be cool and distant, and meek and clumsy, and hopelessly in love, and then hurt in a way that makes one hurt along... he can really show his range AND use his good looks to make jung-ho/healer-bong-soo someone no one watching this drama will easily - if ever - forget.
he and PMY are nuclear together, they bring out the best in each other with these parts. i liked her in city hunter, but i didn't even recognize her name when she was cast in healer. i promise you i won't forget her after this one. (and i didn't forget JCW after WBDS, the first drama i watched completely where he starred in. but this, THIS is one another level altogether.)

does anyone still remember the subdued and out-of-reach healer who appeared in the first two eps? the first real emotion he showed was in episode 2, when YS was talking about her childhood traumas. before then, he was acting like all he wanted for the money, the more the better. and his acting showed that, too. only after JH came into contact with YS more and he began falling deeper, his true self - or parts of it - started showing. so many layers, and we're not seeing them all yet.

now the personas have all come together for he and YS, and she has to learn this new guy she has a crush on, again. she loves BS and crushed on healer, but she doesn't know JH... it's like their love story is starting again!!!!

is it monday again yet?!

Yeah I noticed his reactions in ep 2 , moreover he did not or could not film the whole situation.. He told ajumma it's enough .. He was definitely moved

I absolutely agree with what you said. I was rewatching it and realized that JH is a whole new person. He has developed so phenomenally. In the first scene of ep 1 where he is playing and talking about how the tennis girl wasn't sexy enough....that went straight out the window when he met CYS!

I am just wondering why JCW's team only opened a weibo account for him now.

May be he needs better marketing team...he needs to be promoted more rigorously.

Really...that explains things. It's a real shame that he doesn't have a bigger agency to back him up so that he can be better promoted.

Or may be JCW is loyal to his agency and he is more interested in becoming a real actor, instead of seeking fame and money??

I just wish he gets more recognition for his acting and gain more fans, because he really deserves it as much other actors such Lee MIn Ho or Kim Soo Hyun.

But he is cast in good projects and they let him do musicals :) I'm sure if he keeps improving his acting and having good projects (this requires luck also), the reste will come naturally!

pretty much
he is more interested in becoming a real actor instead of seeking fame or money. he always says that he just wants to be a good actor.
His company is very small but I think they are trying to reach into the international market now since he is starting to see more international popularity. They are probably trying to measure the response of international fans (chinese fans with weibo).

Required fields are marked *

And if we think about it....even with the small agency, he is receiving this recognition from us international fans and the same goes for Korea. It may not be mega fame like LMH and KSH but he is getting there the way that he wants to. He is so humble and true to himself. That's what I love about him.

0

I actually don't want him in a huge agency.

Yes small ones may lack funding and are probably limited or restricted many ways in terms of promoting their talents but Ji Chang Wook has always wanted to be a great actor, not a popular one. He's using his talent to gain fans, not an agency. The big agencies will probably make him do this n that to gain popularity n attention like an idol instead.

He had never been promoted like that and yet he's gaining (already gained long ago, to me) recognition as a great actor, like now so I don't want this to change!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't know but if he chooses to remain with a small agency that agency may give him much freedom, we all Korean entertainment industry is really saturated and they all have to handle much pressure ...

I really appreciate that he did not give up on musicals to become an actor

he was so depressed he just shut down and nothing - but a daebak dream of YS - would wake him up. he can't just up and go out of the blue, no matter what the provocation... depression doesn't work that way. i expect we'll be seeing the panda eyes for a while yet.

and the worst is - he still wouldn't be allowed to do anything. MH was spying on KMS for so long, with hidden cameras in his office and all, and he already KNEW he had ordered people to be "disappeared", why would he act now teacher is dead? he really is an all-talk-less-action guy, whereas JH is the other way around. how would they mesh a plan together without JH being placed in great danger, and YS alongside him?

because now i'm starting to fear she's gonna take the fall for the boys next, after teacher. KMS knows MH's up to something, and the detective's underling who poisoned teacher is there ready to hear all about how MH knew healer and came to see his body. the detective needs to have an explanation for the doctors JH kicked down (whoa, boy, simmer down, you're one of the good guys, where did the bully come from?!) - what other explanation is there except for teacher being a fall guy and the real healer being alive and kicking?

KMS only has to look closer toward MH and find YS, healer and all his targets, all in a row. this is not good. i'm getting chills already. JH won't stand a chance if KMS gets YS and uses her against him.

applauds to ahjumma - lol, she's always the inner cop talking down to ex-con in that cafe :D and this is the second time she's using YS to help JH... is she a secret godmother in disguise? :D

awww, poor little boy hurt... everyone who loved him betrayed him and all those who he has loved either die or go away. no wonder he's not going to allow YS any closer, if he can make it happen. i still think he'll do the hero thing and still send her away, despite the kiss and breakdown. depression would make him not think things through, and i did say i love the way he hurts, before. he's going to be walking angst for a while, maybe. YS better keep close. he can't save himself, that's her job. i loved how she'd take back the waiting part of her anger - you go girl. now give him his west choice!!!
