Healer: Episode 14

Oof. It’s a wrenching episode, taking us on a roller coaster ride of wild emotional ups and downs. Our hero has to grapple with some weighty, nearly unbearable, burdens, struggling to make sense out of the insensible. Thankfully for him, he isn’t as alone in the world as he thinks he is—and thankfully for us, roller coasters have upswings to counter the violent downs. Up, up, and away!

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Teacher dies. Jung-hoo arrives at the station in time to see his body being wheeled out to an ambulance, and his knee-jerk reaction is to charge at the scene furiously.

Dae-yong and several buddies are thankfully on hand to hold him back, though it’s a struggle. He flings them aside a few times, but they manage to prevent him from being spotted and drag him out of sight. It’s a good thing, too, because Detective Yoon just misses spotting Jung-hoo, keeping Healer undetected for the time being.

Dae-yong blocks Jung-hoo’s path to the car, and Jung-hoo slumps down against it, suddenly weakened. He reels, physically winded.

Then he gets in the car anyway, shoving Dae-yong aside, and drives off. Gah, not in that condition!

Min-ja is just as devastated by the news, and answers Dae-yong’s call with a heavy heart. But she pulls herself together to address the problem of their rogue Healer. So she puts in a phone call to Moon-ho, not bothering to introduce herself; she doesn’t need to, because the second she drops Teacher’s name, Moon-ho’s all ears.

Jung-hoo storms into the hospital with a single-minded goal, and his rage provides a tunnel vision that makes him think nothing of beating down the poor doctors who get in his way. He gets to the morgue efficiently—but once there, he hesitates, trembling in trepidation.

As soon as Moon-ho arrives at the hospital, Detective Yoon recognizes him and stops him to ask a few questions. Moon-ho’s got bigger concerns right now, but he can’t just shake off the curious cop.

Jung-hoo enters the exam room and has difficulty approaching the body, his hands shaking as he draws back the sheet. One look at Teacher’s face is all he needs, and the tears spring forth immediately, even as he says, “It’s not true, right? I remember how you played a trick on me last time just like this, you know. So get up. Teacher.”

He asks pleadingly, but reality is slowly setting in. Slowly, Jung-hoo sinks to the ground in a crouch.

Detective Yoon leads Moon-ho down to the morgue, and along the way they encounter the unconscious orderly in the hallway. While the detective calls for help, Moon-ho hurries forward to the morgue ahead of him—but when he arrives, the exam room is empty.

Moon-ho moves to draw the sheet over Teacher’s head, but pauses—this must be the first time in over a decade that he’s seen his hyung’s face. He wells up with tears.

When the detective asks how he knows Teacher, Moon-ho replies that this man was like family to him. Tears dripping down his face, Moon-ho leans over the body and promises, “Hyung, I’ll take care of this now.”

His reaction to the supposed Healer’s death naturally makes the detective wonder, and I’m hoping this doesn’t signal complications for Moon-ho… even though it totally will, right? Detective Yoon calls for reinforcements to beef up his investigation, and anticipates that they’ll have “guests” dropping in to get Teacher’s statement. They’ll have to set a trap.

As Jung-hoo drives off, he thinks back to earlier days with Teacher, such as the time he’d proudly presented Jung-hoo with home-cooked birthday soup (which did not go well). Then there was the time Jung-hoo had presented Teacher with his high school equivalency certificate and “won” a promised briefcase from the Teacher (which was full of porn, HA).

A car overtakes him on the road, then screeches to a halt in front of him, forcing Jung-hoo to stop. Jung-hoo tries to drive around it, but Moon-ho literally puts himself in front of the car, then grabs to hold Jung-hoo back while explaining that a woman called to tell him he’d be coming this way. And that he’d be out to kill.

Moon-ho blocks his path with his body and pleads, “Don’t do it! Don’t! You’d become a murderer because of bastards like that? Why?!” Moon-ho continues to try to stop Jung-hoo, who keeps knocking him aside, not giving up even after receiving several hard blows. Jung-hoo isn’t so far gone that he’ll seriously hurt Moon-ho, though, and stops himself from delivering a severe punch. Moon-ho gasps out that his teacher wouldn’t have wanted him to do this.

Jung-hoo asks in frustration what he has to do, and Moon-ho’s promise to figure something out isn’t good enough—he needs something now. He bursts out that he’s like this because there’s nothing he can do, so he demands that Moon-ho tell him something.

Moon-ho yells back that he’s felt this way for the past twenty years, fighting the frustration of being unable to do anything. Oof, you know, that is a very good point.

“So just give me a little time,” Moon-ho asks. “I’ll find a way.”

But now Jung-hoo turns the blame inward: “I called Teacher here. He didn’t want to come, but I called him. I made him talk about things he didn’t want to talk about, and got angry when he did. And because I was angry, even though he was here for the first time in eight years, we didn’t eat a single meal together. But that damned old man…”

Jung-hoo’s really struggling, and Moon-ho tells him to go ahead and cry. Instead, Jung-hoo bellows his frustration, then gets back in his car. Moon-ho blocks his car door and swears to take down every single evildoer and make them pay for their crimes, asking Jung-hoo to trust him.

Jung-hoo asks, “How? Aside from stopping me, what can you do?” Moon-ho doesn’t have an answer, and he finally steps back. Jung-hoo drives off.

Moon-shik receives reporters at home for an interview, now that he’s a mayoral candidate, and Myung-hee keeps up appearances as the loving wife in front of the cameras. But her face is stony when she listens to Moon-shik giving his interview, as he laughs how it’s both his strength and weakness that he’s exactly the same on the inside and outside: “I can’t hide a thing!”

Young-shin is puzzled when she can’t get a hold of Bong-soo. The boys were at her place all night working, and he supposedly only stepped out to go running, but never returned. Reporter Yeo points out that Bong-soo has a habit of running away in fear at nighttime or at dawn, and speculates that he must’ve seen something that scared him off… insinuating that Young-shin spooked him with her behavior, ha.

He and Editor Jang look at her expectantly for an explanation of what she did to run him off, but she doesn’t have to give one since Moon-ho arrives to explain Bong-soo being absent today.

Young-shin proposes to Moon-ho that they interview Moon-shik, saying that she’d like to tell him directly that they find his past shady so they can get his response to it. The problem is that he might decline a request for interview, so she asks Moon-ho to pull some strings, since he’s his brother.

“From today, he isn’t,” Moon-ho replies, startling her. “I’ve decided that Kim Moon-shik and I are not brothers. Not anymore.”

Despite the surprise, Young-shin doesn’t ask questions, saying merely that she’ll try getting the interview on her own. She admits to a particular interest in the wife, having read about how amazingly close the spouses’ relationship is. She allows that Moon-ho knows his brother and must have good reason to consider him unfit for office—but perhaps a man who is so devoted toward one woman all his life isn’t all bad. At the very least, she’d like to meet the wife and draw her own conclusions. Moon-ho agrees to think about it, which she takes as a positive sign.

She asks if he talked to Bong-soo, and he just says that he must be out with a cold. Young-shin starts texting Bong-soo, but deletes each attempt. First she asks “Bong-soo-ya” if he’s sick, and then she asks more formally, “What is your name?” Finally she sets the phone aside, not texting after all.

At her desk, Min-ja sets a shot of soju before a photograph of Teacher and asks him to wish her luck—she’s about to resurrect some long-dormant superpowers. Then she gets to business, unleashing her full hacker skills on her keyboard, which soon goes detected by the police department. Detective Yoon races to his terminal to get in on the action, recognizing the hacking pattern, a look of gleeful anticipation on his face as he counters.

Flashback: Min-ja is the lead cop on a stakeout, with a young Detective Yoon weathering the brunt of her rebukes as she outlines the importance of the case they’re working on. They have to wait for a warrant to be issued before charging in, but until then they have to make sure their targets don’t catch wind and delete their computer files.

While they’re waiting, Min-ja takes a call with her irate husband, who screams, “You call yourself a mother?!” It’s because she won’t leave the stakeout, although Detective Yoon overhears and urges her to go, because her four-year-old is in the hospital after yet another surgery. Just then the warrant is issued, and Min-ja orders her team into action, choosing work again.

In the present, Detective Yoon springs the trap. But Min-ja outmaneuvers him, freezing the system while she downloads the files she needs.

This hack brings back more painful memories, and the next flashback shows her husband accusing her of not being a mother, because she wasn’t there when her child died. Making things even worse, her police boss issues orders from above to cover up the case and delete those hard-earned files after all.

Well, it’s no wonder she quit the force after that. Ajumma raises a sardonic toast to Teacher and drinks.

She hacks into the Healer pad to tell Jung-hoo that she got Teacher’s recorded statement, which sounds to her like a message meant for Jung-hoo. Jung-hoo watches Teacher’s video, where Teacher says that he never gave too much thought to the jobs he took on, but ought to have. If he had, those thoughts could’ve been his signboard, directing him where to go when he felt lost, warning him of cliffs or construction ahead, or to turn around.

When asked whether he murdered Go Sung-chul on commission, Teacher replies that he doesn’t accept those jobs:

Teacher: “If a person kills another person, they become inhuman. You should die a person. That way, you can reunite with those people you want to see again, those who left before you. There’s one thing I regret: I should have quit from the start.”

That’s when Teacher turns away from the detective and faces the camera instead: “Give it up. Go live with the woman you love, raising two kids, a dog, two cats, a few goldfish. I should have.”

Shaken and confused, Jung-hoo can only ask in a small lost voice, “Why?”

Ajumma advises Jung-hoo to honor Teacher’s dying wishes, and offers to make him a new identity, or to solidify Bong-soo’s. But Jung-hoo says heavily, “It’s too late. She already knows everything. Who I am.”

Then he corrects himself: “No, not everything. She doesn’t know that being with me will bring her pain. That it might even kill her.” He ignores ajumma’s barrage of questions, saying that there’s nothing he can do but sleep.

So he sets out unplugging all his computers, pulls the battery out of his phone, removes his watch and ring, and heads for bed. Checking out of life for the time being.

Moon-ho drops by the ABS station, and although his former boss Min-jae is still peeved at him for the press conference stunt, she agrees to a chat. Moon-ho apologizes for putting her in a bad position, then explains how a close hyung recently died, and that he thinks he knows who killed him. Then there’s another guy who used to be close to him in childhood, who has been out of touch for three days.

Min-jae’s understandably frosty with him and tells him impatiently to get to the point. Moon-ho’s answer is a bit surprising—that she is the only name saved in his phone as a friend, and today he’s here to talk to a friend. “Because I have nobody to talk to.”

Min-jae notes that despite Moon-ho’s image as a fearless figure, she knows he’s actually the opposite: “You only ever fight when you won’t get hurt. You run away when you meet someone frightening, using an appropriate excuse.” She tells him it’s nothing to be ashamed of, however, “Since we’re all like that.”

Young-shin and Jong-soo get busy working on the Moon-shik story, and in between interviews she tries to track down Bong-soo at home using his resumé address, which turns out to be nonexistent. She sends him messages chiding him for skipping work when they’re short-staffed, her voicemails going from concerned to stern to threatening, warning that he’s missed his forgiveness window.

But by the fifth day, her voice is scared as she sits in the dark, asking, “Did I… do something wrong? Is it because I said I would wait that you can’t come? Should I have said I wouldn’t wait… that you shouldn’t worry? Should I cancel what I said?”

ABS schedules a talk with Moon-shik as a live broadcast, and Moon-ho decides to use that as Someday’s next broadcast. As soon as Moon-shik answers a question on air, within the next ten minutes, Someday will counter that answer.

Of course, that requires them to know what questions will be asked. But Moon-ho knows his brother will only answer questions that have been prepped in advance, and turns to his spy, asking if he’d like to be a double agent. Jong-soo would NOT, thank you very much, but really, there’s no refusing. He nervously agrees.

Moon-ho finds Young-shin still huddled in the dark, and she jumps up guiltily. He asks for her phone, and she assumes she’s in trouble and promises not to make any more personal calls on the job, only to have him punch in a number—it’s Myung-hee’s. He gives permission to use his name in asking for an interview, and Young-shin excitedly hurries off to make the call.

At home, Myung-hee heads into her husband’s empty office and tries opening his desk drawers. They’re locked shut, to her disappointment—but she catches a glimpse of something mounted to the underside of the desk. A button.

She presses it, and bookshelves slide open to reveal the secret space behind it, where the hidden TV screens are mounted. That’s when she gets Young-shin’s call, and more surprising than her request is the news that Moon-ho is her boss at Someday—all this while, she thought he was still at the broadcast station. Wow, she has really been kept cut off from the world.

Myung-hee’s also surprised that Moon-ho would have given her number to a reporter, as he knows that she doesn’t meet people. But she likes the sound of Young-shin’s voice and asks for time to consider, and Young-shin thanks her enthusiastically.

Min-ja sends Dae-yong on the rounds to track down all of Jung-hoo’s vehicles, trying to pinpoint his whereabouts. But everything looks untouched, and Min-ja deduces that this means Jung-hoo isn’t moving at all, which suggests he’s holed himself up at home. Dae-yong offers to go in person, but Min-ja says that even if she showed up there, she couldn’t get inside without Jung-hoo’s permission.

Next thing you know, ajumma charges into the Chae family cafe (yesssssssss) like she owns the place, ordering ajusshi to open half an hour early and demanding a female server. Haha. I love how she doesn’t explain a thing, and just lets them think she’s a weirdo.

Min-ja imperiously motions Young-shin aside to take her order, and Young-shin complies, despite her bafflement. Once Young-shin sits down, ajumma asks if she recognizes her voice, and repeats her words from her previous call to jog her memory.

Young-shin gasps upon recognition, suddenly alert and pelting her with questions. She says that Bong-soo’s been unreachable for days, her worry obvious.

Ajumma asks for her phone and links it to a device, fiddling with it as she tells her that Bong-soo’s been immobile for six days, probably not eating. She’s certain he won’t let her in, which leaves one option: to force him to open the door himself.

Understanding what she’s getting at, Young-shin asks tearfully, “Is he… okay? Is he not okay?” (I notice she’s now calling him “that person”—her way of referring to the Healer—instead of Bong-soo.) She grabs ajumma’s hand and begs her to tell her where to find him.

Ajumma notes Young-shin’s vehement reaction and replies, “I had to see your eyes.” Then she hands her back the phone, all the information there at her fingertips.

Young-shin follows the directions to Jung-hoo’s building, her lock-picking skills coming in handy in getting past the first locked door. She heads up the elevator, through the dilapidated warehouse floor, up some crumbling stairs, and to a seeming dead end. There’s nowhere to go from here, but the signal on her phone indicates that this is where she should be.

So Young-shin starts tapping on the walls and calling out for Bong-soo. Getting no response, she pulls out her tools and finds a stethoscope, using it to listen through the wall… and then she hears something click. A sign dangling on the opposite wall moves, and when she moves it again, the wall springs open.

Cautiously, she steps inside the inner lair—and there he is, in bed, looking half-dead.

Young-shin races to his side, and as she reaches to call for an ambulance, Jung-hoo’s eyes slowly open. She tells him gently, “Bong-soo-ya, I’m here.”

He sighs, “Daebak.” Which, all things considered, is hilarious. He reaches his hand out to touch her face, wondering at this dream. He murmurs that he’s cold, and at that she climbs in bed with him and cradles his head in her arms. It’s incredibly sweet. And as she holds him close, he snuggles into her side.

Some time later, he wakes up, alone in bed. Young-shin comes up holding a ladle (and are those his clothes she’s wearing?), holding it out for him to taste.

He struggles to get up, not at all happy to see her. She disregards his displeasure and informs him that she’s put in a personal day at work and intends to stay till tomorrow, and that he’ll eat her cooking whether he likes it or not.

He tells her wearily that this is no place for her, and that she should leave: “Forget this place, and don’t come back.”

His demeanor is cold and uninviting, and Young-shin looks at him intently and asks if this is the real him. Bong-soo didn’t talk like that, “But you’re a little scary.” She informs him that it’s dark and late, so she’ll leave tomorrow if he wants.

Ignoring his surliness, Young-shin sets him up comfortably and presents him with dinner. His mood darkens further as he grabs Young-shin’s things, thrusting them at her and pushing her toward the exit.

She whirls out of reach, refusing to leave, and he’s frankly too weak to do much else. Staggering closer, he asks in exasperation, “Why do you have so little fear?”

She replies, “I’m not afraid of you.” He points out that he’s hiding more from her than she could even guess, and she answers, “I don’t care.” He fires back, “Are you an idiot?”

“Don’t send me away,” she says. “If you send me away, you’ll cry forever.”

He says bleakly, “I could get you hurt.” She shakes her head, full of certainty: “No, you won’t get me hurt. Never.”

He struggles with himself, then grabs her wrist to drag her out. But she stops him, turning him toward her and pulling him into a hug. “Don’t send me away,” she asks again.

Jung-hoo’s face crumples in tears, and then he buries his face in her neck and grabs tight.

She holds him like that for a long moment, and then pulls back to wipe his tears from his face. She kisses him.

COMMENTS

So many things to write about, and they’re not even about that kiss! (Although, eeee, that kiss!)

I was really happy with where this episode took Moon-ho—even as far as yesterday I wasn’t sure what direction he would ultimately take, but today solidified his place standing alongside the Healer. I know he’d declared his intention to work together in the last episode, but it took seeing his old hyung cold and dead on that slab to finally cut the cord, and to realize that his brother had in fact crossed the line fully, that he couldn’t spare him from justice. I don’t think he was necessarily waiting for his brother to redeem himself, but he had enough hope that he wasn’t so far gone.

So now that he knows Moon-shik would (and has) killed, he’s finally ready to take the stand he’s been waffling on taking for the past twenty years. Moon-ho really is the linchpin in this entire story, because even now he possesses more information than anybody else, and it isn’t until he makes the decision that our mother-daughter reunion can start on its path. I suppose if he had had his brother’s ambition his kind of masterminding might be an ominous thing, but as Min-jae rightly points out, Moon-ho is actually rather timid. Good-intentioned, but lacking the courage to fight the big fight.

I guess that’s why he needs Healer and Young-shin on his team to see through the final takedown of the Elder. And while it sucks to have Jung-hoo so shaken by the loss of Teacher, it’s the perfect narrative catalyst to bring them together—because till now, they’ve shared the general stance of being anti-Moon-shik, but differed in their personal motivations. Jung-hoo doesn’t care about the Elder beyond what he does to people he loves, so he isn’t swayed by Moon-ho’s appeals for greater justice. Now, though, Teacher’s death provides a link, and I’m excited to see how these two work together from here on out. One brotherly bond may be severed, but who says another one can’t be formed? (As for the baddies, we’re still unclear on what exactly the Elder does, but based on what we know thus far, I’m imagining a shadow society of elites who manipulate all aspects of society to benefit themselves—I’m thinking Kishokai of Gaksital, for instance.)

I loved how the show depicted Jung-hoo’s reaction to losing Teacher, which felt real and raw, and bolstered by acting that totally made me cry along with the characters. There was an immediacy to Jung-hoo’s grief that I found powerful, and am so happy to see Ji Chang-wook become this character so wholly.

More than the kiss itself (although again, eeee!), I was moved by Jung-hoo’s reaction to Young-shin’s stubborn insistence on staying with him—the anger, confusion, fear, and eventual acceptance. Most of the time, noble idiocy in dramaland arises when a character pushes someone away “for their own good” in a situation where that angst is unnecessary, hence the idiocy part of the term. But it’s not noble idiocy when the reasons are credible, and it makes perfect sense that Jung-hoo’s reaction to losing one of the last loved ones in his life is to shut down entirely, especially when he blames himself for that death.

The heartbreaking thing is that the Teacher did totally die for him, indirectly; I don’t think he knew he was going to die, but you get the sense that Teacher would willingly do it again and feel it was worth the cost. He wasn’t able to protect the baby bears through the end of their lives, but he made good on his promise by protecting them through the end of his. But to Jung-hoo, all he sees is that people around him die, and that’s devastating in a twofold way: first, he costs good people their lives, and second, he then has to live in a world where they’re dead.

So he’s become deathly afraid of building any sort of meaningful relationship, because every time it burns him, it cuts deeper and deeper. Yet in comes charging this girl who refuses to let him bully her away, informing him that she will stay put, and refusing to accept his fear of hurting her. Moreover, she isn’t about to let him sink into self-ruin, and insists on taking care of him. Young-shin is totally badass in all the best ways, and she just keeps getting better.

I love how he sees her next to his bed and sighs that it must be a dream, and only in his half-conscious state does he allow her to come close. Despite the fact that they totally got to snuggle in bed together, I appreciate that the scene wasn’t sexy in the least, but more poignantly sweet, letting our damaged hero find some comfort while his guard is lowered. When he’s fully awake, you can see how much he wishes he could believe her while his head warns him not to… but thankfully for all of us, there’s only so much denial you can handle before you cave and have to accept it already. (Accept the truth, kisses and all!) Somehow it feels fitting that he gets to be with his girl against the backdrop of his imagined paradise, ’cause I think he’s doing just fine where he is in his reality, once he finally allows himself his honesty.

I loved this episode!!! Loved loved Min-Ja SShi our resident cupid and Young Shin is so awesome. She's there to stay! I totally agree with JB, the scene where she climbs into bed and cradles him and he in turn just giving her a big squeeze hug was just soooooooo sweet! I'm sure all of us loved the kiss at the end, but I found her taking care of him by getting him comfortable with the pillow, blanket, heater and feeding him jook to be so adorable, something an old married couple would do. I want more! More!

Though I did have some sense of reality to think about how he hadn't brushed his teeth for 6 days so uh........... NEVERMIND NO I WON'T THINK ABOUT THAT.

BAD BREATH OR NOT, kissing bongsookie would be beyond awesome.

In the original script, after he ate and drank he showered, shaved, brushed his teeth (yay!) and shaved. So everyone can rest assured.

Bwahahaha!!!! You just had to say it! Now it's stuck in my head, as in eeeewww. Actually when YS first approached him in his bed, that thought came to mind. He probably has not showered or brushed his teeth.... oh well, what love can do. If love is blind, then it must also be dead to smell. lol

@siesta

That's what I wanted to say it was freezing cold there, so shower might not be a big problem, moreover they won't show you every movement, they just wanted us to know he locked himself for six days..

And about brushing teeth, he might have brushed and washed mouth after eating then got ready to drop YS at him as she said it was dark so she couldn't go home

LOLOLOL!

This is one show where not just once, not just twice, but I swear this must be the third time we are concerned about smell. We were concerned that YS never detected PBS was Healer by his smell, since she's been hugged deep into his chest more than once as both. Now we are concerned that she does not get turned off by it!!!! *rolling around over here!!* But yeah, I'm glad we can just watch from a distance in this scene and not be up close and smellable!! :D

Well, we see him changing his clothes (socks, jeans, putting on a jacket) - so him going to the restroom and brushing his teeth inbetween isn't too far-fetched.

funny you, Gb. Yea, already preparing comments even if very limited understanding with no subs.
I sleep early so i can time my waking to live stream, which is around 2 am where i am. Unfortunately, always wake up at around 3. and i can't get the kbs link. i look all around and i've found on two days already, youtube if somebody uploaded it, usually checking the time in terms of hours and not days. someone will eventually do and i view with no subs at around 5 am. check if someone's discussing it on the last recap thread if i still have time. but by then i prepare for the office. Kamsahmida to whoever uploads it on youtube. It disappears by the way. I fear for the links mentioned here as the mention may trigger the...cyber police. by the time the recap is up, normally, you can view on viki with the h...org to override area restrictions.

Check out post 155.1 at pg 4 of comments for ep 13.

There's a link to KBS' streaming site, so should have no problems with cyber police. And an excellent walk through by Boongsookie of going about it.

Thanks Boongsookie! :-)

I never trust live stream, it fails somewhere in middle and I dont like to miss a scene or like buffering much!

So I usually watch it raw after its uploaded. And subs usually come earliest at dramabay.com

Its just around a hour before the recap goes up. So I usually try to catch subbed version before reading recap!

I have much better comments to write about this episode in the future. It destroyed me emotionally and then just had such a beautiful, uplifting ending. But I want to take my time thinking about the episode before I write about it...so for now I'll just be squeeeeing a whole lot.

@Giegie LOL, I went back to look at all our posts! Was SJN listening to us?! Like...it all happened. In this ONE episode. Like…I can’t believe it. Everything we wanted to happen within 8 episodes…happened in 1. They cuddled. They cried. They kissed. I died. Technically the kiss wasn’t in the bed though LOL, but it was very close to it…so we’ll get there? *cough*next week*cough* #stillnotgreedy

But I actually loved how it looks like they kiss on his “island” at the end :) I want to say more, but writing about it has reminded me that what I really want right now is to be playing that scene over and over.

....oh wait they have the bad guys to fight, but seriously there are still 6 more episodes, and an option to extend, I don't know, they need to do something to satisfy the fans cravings!

When Jung-hoo said "Daebak", I was like, yeah daebak indeed while grinning like a fool haha. OMG my imagination has come into reality, kyaaaaaa! Man, I love this writer! And they cuddled in the bed, one of my favorite scenes, it's just so innocent? and sweet. I'll be fine with sweet moments next epi, not necessarily another kiss but the continuation of the cliffhanger kiss. And I'm still waiting for her to beat him up, or kick him for deceiving her. 1. She gets into his secret lair on her own.
2. She immediately jumps in bed with him to cuddle him back to health.
3. She makes him food and takes care of him.
4. She's wearing his clothes already (my personal favorite)
5. She doesn't take his unwelcoming behavior and refuses to leave.
6. She assures him he can never hurt her.
7. She hugs him.
8. She wipes his tears.
9. She kisses him.
10. Did I mention that she did all these amazing things within ten minutes?

That's how wonderful she is.

That's one of the things I loved about the Ahjumma-test: sure, she'll give you his location but ONLY after actually staring you down and reading your soul - and THEN you have to earn your way in through two locked doors and a maze. Also the man inside, though in love with you, is a highly-trained fighter who may be crazed with grief. GOOD LUCK YOUNG-SHIN.

It felt like Ahjumma was really making Young-shin earn her place by Jung-hoo's side, and was right in line with the sort of "affection" I'd expect Ahjumma to show.

Thanks JB for the recaps. I've always been a lurker but a great story like healer just compels me to come out out hiding.
I'm loving the fact that the writer allows the characters to deal with each issues realistically. Like when JH just felt like shutting himself off from the world after teacher died. That's what heartache and depression looks like and kudos to JCW for pulling off such great potrayal of those hard emotions.

Re : comment 41 above @ Kimmy
I'm sort of echoing Kimmy's thoughts above, but my shoutout is to the poor, relegated-to-merely-lackey role of Dae Yong, who is in a difficult position between Ahjumma and Healer and who seems to get little respect.

She is actually a very important backup person, totally committed and reliable but so often forgotten and only called up to serve. I wish she could have more screen time and kick some ass and be appreciated by Ahjumma and Healer more.

With only 6 episodes to go and so much to resolve, I'm not sure Dae Yong will get much more exposure, except as side-kick and convenient runner. :(

man JCW is a damn good crier. or actually rather than when he actually cries, the scenes where he was holding back was far more painful.you can see the tears filling up, his body trembling as he struggled to make sense of his life- everything just hurts so good.

i'm so conflicted- like, SHOW STOP TORTURING THE POOR GUY and then NO NO DONT STOP PLS CONTINUE

I totally agree. The JH - MH portion was so powerful! made more intense by JH holding back his tears. His rage is palpable. I can feel it coming out of his pores, and yet he did not allow his tears to fall. MH's desperate pleas for JH to not go down to the hell where the evil men reside, his submission to the raging punches of JH.

I love these two actors to pieces! This is my first time to watch a show with them in it. Am absolutely blown away.

You might be right siesta. Secretary Oh might figure significantly in the next few episodes. His OCD might do him in. And remember he always carries this briefcase that he hugs so protectively. I have seen it a few times. I wonder what's in it.

Oh, his briefcase!

Why did he clasped that briefcase so close to his body? That briefcase has a handle after all. Is it because he's OCD? Does anyone here know?

Required fields are marked *

Secretary Oh is a really important character and the actor playing him is knocking it out of the park. He's been a K-drama dad so many times (or a motherly uncle in Miss Korea) having him play such a twisted piece of human garbage is amazing.

I do think there was a major clue dropped in the first episode though that a lot of people missed. Moon-Shik said something like, "the Elder sent you to me XX years ago, I thought you'd be my person by now and I'm disappointed you're still reporting to the Elder." My takeaway from that and other scenes is that Sec'ty Oh is 100% the Elder's puppet and his job is to manipulate Moon-Shikh not to actually work for him. He probably did arrange the poisoning of Teacher on his own thoughts or the Elder's and not Moon-Shikh's. But then, putting the blame on MS is part of the control.

POP! THAT WAS MY HEART BURSTING AT THE SEAMS WITH PAIN AND TEARS AND A BIT OF JOY AND AGONY.

This episode was so sad and full of melancholy that I may have used up all the tears I had available today. The poignancy emotions portrayed in the episodes seem to go up a notch in every episode and it feels more than addictive, I feel impatient with the thought of having to wait another week for the next episode.

JI CHANG WOOK. That man has this unique ability to make me cry in a matter of seconds because the pain of Jung Hoo is so palpable that I could literally feel what he was going through just through a single look, and this episode really strung out both his heart and mine. It was terribly sad to see such a young soul go through so much hardship, and I increasingly became worried for this beloved character. Watching Jung Hoo/Healer flip out and go through the stages of anger and depression after losing a dear loved one gives a true sense of the harsh reality that he lives in, and the pain and suffering that has built up inside him. Thankfully, he has Chae Young Shin as his beacon of comfort, and I have to admire her stubbornness and adversity and perseverance. No matter how hard Jung Hoo tried to push her away, she faced it like a boss, and I really feel that this development as a character was very realistic and I loved watching her character grow in that moment. The tender moment at the end of the episode was SO PRECIOUS because its a big moment between them, and its different than the other moments they've had so far because now both of them know where they stand and who each of them are, even if CYS is missing out on a few details. I LOVE THEM OMG. Did anyone miss the fact that they were kissing next to... oh well never mind, I guess we shall see.

Myung Hee noona is a boss on wheels. Not only is she rightfully suspicious of her husband, but she's actually doing something about it! I LOVE IT. I also loved the conversation with noona and her daughter, especially because neither of them know yet and it hurts REALLY GOOD and I can't wait till one of them finds out, but I'm afraid of the consequences. I really hope that they can be reunited without medical problems from noona. ALSO CAN I SAY THAT MOON HO DECLARING THE END OF HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS BROTHER WAS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS EVER. The fact that Moon Shik killed his own friend from the past for his selfish reasons makes me angry with a want for him to be brought to justice NOW and the same goes for Elder. I hope the body count doesn't go any higher, but with 6 episodes to go, that isn't likely. Lets just hope that there isn't too much noble idiocy to be seen in the future because I am quite enjoying the trajectory of this drama. Now I'm just going to ponder and marvel over this drama until 5 days later when Episode 15 arrives.

Required fields are marked *

@Divyrus He comes out of the shower, showing off those delicious abs and all she does is dry his hair...? Maybe she should just join him in the shower is all I'm sayin'

But on a serious note (if I must), that would be a very intimate moment. All of the scenes of her taking care of him has been real sweet thus far and I wouldn't mind seeing more of that. This is why I love this OTP so much, both parties bring something to the table and take turns protecting and being there for the other person.

As for your comment below, I want both to share their stories with each other. Of all people, they should know each other best and could understand each other's pain. They need to let it all out while being in the comfort of each other's arm.

And as I mentioned in a previous comment, I still definitely want JH to keep up the BS front at work since it'd be hilarious especially now that both MH and YS knows he's pretending to be such a clumsy, meek and adorkable hoobae.

And is it bad that I want YS to be placed in another dangerous situation just to see JH's reaction?

Hmm what else? Keep them coming! :D

0

And I want a scene where she tells what happened when she was kid and all the violence she faced.

Teacher’s death was just fantastically done – sometimes a show kills of a character needlessly, but this worked.

Firstly, I don’t believe that Teacher went into this thinking he’d end up dead. He was reacting quickly to a rapidly-deteriorating situation, and once he was in police custody, it really did seem like Ahjumma and Jung-hoo were concerned but pretty sure he’d be okay. I think TEACHER thought he’d be okay – right up until he felt an itch in his throat (I don’t believe he’d have offered poisoned food to detective Yoon if he’d suspected). Kdramas tend to do a lot of grand-gesture sacrifice, and this felt smaller and more heartfelt, like Teacher didn’t intend for things to happen this way and he would’ve preferred to survive, but when he realized he was dying his last efforts were to protect Jung-hoo.

Ahjumma’s deep and quiet grief that leads to her eventually opening up to Young-Shin, Jung-hoo’s panicked lashing out and then total withdrawal, and even Moon-ho’s horror were fallout from that that in a way that Moon-shik (or creepy Secretary, who well may be working alone) couldn’t have forseen.

I love how much attention this writer pays to the idea of waiting. Young-shin’s father waiting for her to come hold his hand, Young-shin waiting for Healer to open up, Ahjumma waiting to actually see the look in Young-shin’s eyes before handing over the partial key to Jung-hoo (note she didn’t make it a cakewalk, Young-shin had to prove her worth in breaking in).

And then Moon-ho, who seems to have been waiting all this time for the one piece of evidence to break off from him brother, and here it is – the thing he really can’t deny. Especially effecting since Moon-ho seems to want to play an uncle role to Jung-hoo again, seems to actually love him, and now he sees how his brother has managed to orphan Jung-hoo THREE TIMES: father, mother and now guardian.

Just a really well-written show, especially on a death ep that could have been used as a cheap catalyst.

Ouch! Once again late to the game but just wanted to say thank you JB for a wonderful recap which totally captured almost everything I wanted to say - JH's emotional reaction to the loss of Teacher was so real and gut ripping that I spent two hours after watching the episode just thinking about what happened. His denial in the morgue, his outrage at Moon Ho and asking Moon Ho what he could do to achieve vengeance...and then total shut down. Absolutely heart breaking.

What was particularly well done too was the way MS went to look for his ex after he found out that Jae Young passed away, and what she told him - that he was too cowardly to fight the big fight...like all the rest of us - that acted nicely in contrast to CYS's moments of courage throughout the drama (that even though she fears, she pushes through those fears to do what she thinks is right...and this comes more when she is 'drunk' aka when her heart overcomes her mind). I thought that was a nice, reflective moment for everyone in the drama.

And oh my that kiss oh that kiss! So perfect, so telling, so forgiving, and so determined - determined to forge ahead and convinced that he won't hurt her (that in fact HE will be hurt if she decided to give in and leave and that he would spend the rest of his life regretting and crying). Guys, we finally got the kiss in Healer's home! Unfortunately its not quite the right time to be making babies, but heyyyy two out of three is pretty good. Now, give us more cuddles and love please!! Surely poor JH deserves to get some, considering the absolute breakdown of his world!

i can sorta see now why Teacher left JH all those years ago- JH by nature is affectionate, and clingy, almost childlike. like ahjumma said, his weakness is the people he loves. Teacher must've felt that JH needs to be able to stand on his own to be effective as Healer

but ugh to be the last time they talk to each other was when JH was being angry at him must've cut deep :/ and to think JH was thinking of getting him out of that police station himself but didn't

By the way , is it only me who is worried about that YS yet don't know about their father's incident, I hope next episode healer himself would tell her about this.. I don't want her to know all of a sudden and again misunderstanding to be created .... Dear JH has suffered much now he should get all happiness and justice

Thank you so much, Javabeans, for this recap, and the screenshots. Especially the screenshots! OMG, I haven't had the time to watch this episode, but I cried buckets only by reading this. Gaaaaahhhh...

I can't believe how touched I could be only by seeing pictures! Their acting, I mean JCW, PMY, YJT, everyone, must've been very good. I can tell only by those stills! And by JB's comments, of course.

I have yet read comments in the beanut gallery. I'm afraid I will not be able to stop myself from drowning in this thread pool, and it could take me hours and hours to get out this pool hahaha I've got kids to feed LOL

Aghhh I watched the episode raw immediately after coming home and have since been waiting for your recap. Thank you, JB!

Can I just say that Young-shin will probably be my favorite drama heroine by the end of this series (and Park Min-young has done a fantastic job with this character!) I love her persistence in this episode and how she dealt with the whole PBS/Healer discovery. She really has remained brave in the face of fear the entire series, and I can't wait to see how she handles finding out about the events of her past and then realizing how incredibly messed up everything is in the present. I'm excited to see how she plays a role in taking the baddies down. And best of all, she'll be facing this all with her Healer (whom she has yet to know as Jung-hoo lol!)

And aghhhh Ji Chang-wook....the pain in his eyes just smash my heart to bits! There's just something about the way he emotes his suffering throughout the episode that just gets me. Little beats like his softly voiced "Why" to Teacher's message, the pained breaths he takes after Young-shin tells him he'd never hurt her, or the subtle quiver of his lips when she wipes his tears away. Agh. My heart. What the heck, have you done to me, JCW??

Throughout the entire encounter with Young-shin and Jung-hoo, I was thinking of all those tiny moments between Healer and YS as well as those heartfelt talks between Bong-soo and YS. To have both facades drop away and have Young-shin seeing and accepting Jung-hoo for who he truly is, and then JH finally crumbling into YS's arms.....oh my feels.

My only qualm is that the show cut right when JH was reciprocating the kiss. WTH, SHOW?!? Now I have to console myself with a never ending gif lol. Whatever, Show. That kiss better continue next episode!

So, someone mentioned writing a poem about JCW's eyes and that led me to think of a crazy, but hopefully fun, idea. Let's write a poem together.

Respond to this post with one short line about Healer (it doesn't have to be JCW's eyes although we could write an epic poem on that alone I'm sure). Then someone has to respond to your post with a line that rhymes. At the end I'll try to compile it and post it in the last episode.

For example:
Post one: Oh, how JCW's eyes shine
Response: If only he was mine.
Post two: Healer is so awesome.
Response: He is better than a possum.
Etc.

Hopefully this isn't too confusing! This can turn out well or be a disaster so let's see what happens lol

It's great how we truly establish that YS did love Bong Soo. We kind of established that last episode but in this episode, we see that YS sees BS as the "real" JH, the person she fell in love with. When JH was pushing her away, she asks "is this the real you? Park Bong Soo wouldn't say that". The fact that she measures his actions against BS' (even though they are the same person!) is telling.

0

That is so true! She was weighing his actions now against those of Bong Soo's. And....wow, I really have lost my ability to talk anything intelligent. Sorry guys.

@dramapenchant,
Thanks for saying that. that would be my next post. Mine would have 1 additional sentence:
"Is this the real you? Park Bong Soo wouldn't say that. You are a little scary right now".

That's the way I feel too. I find J Ho scary at times, a throw back to that petulant kid who came out of juvenile hall.

This makes me realise that my fav persona is also Bong Soo, just like CYS. I'm going to miss Bong Sookie so much! Wah, wah! :'0

0

Required fields are marked *

Actually he is a mix of it all.

His dorkyness and strangeness with people and their ways brought out by Bong Soo,
His intelligence, and his loneliness brought out by Healer, and
Finally, the little kid who lost his dad, mom at such young age, forced to grow up fast and losing his teacher as well brought out by Jung Hoo.

Its such a perfect mix and JCW has aced in his portrayal!

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I always thought of BS as JH doing some ad-lib. It was never a perfect disguise. JH acted out of his character just as much as it was needed with gaping holes in between, so I never truly regarded Bong-soo as a different character, just a facade. Especially, because most of the time he spoke his mind while using BS´s "accent", apart from those bits, of course, when he pretended to be scared or making up some excuses.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, yes, yes! I love how you all have put it together like that.

I can't wait to see their dynamic now that 'everything' is out in the open.

YS attraction to Healer could be out of curiosity and intrigue but her affection for BS stems from real interaction. And we will see in the next episode how she will marry the two characters and who JH/BS will turn out to be.

0

I just wish though that YS had a chance to let BS know or at least hint that she's falling for him. Like how can she fall for BS when she has feelings for Healer at the same time.

Then that would validate that her feelings are true for the entirity of JH/BS/healer.

i actually like that he's portrayed as not perfect

real people in the grip of rage/grief/frustration often lash out at anybody standing in their way. considering he has the potential to become very dangerous, the way he struck without causing serious damage has already shown some restraint on his part

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree. We can argue that he was not in his right mind and was overcome by pain and anguish and so much rage. Remember, after this he went on his way to kill, and to unleash some very violent acts until Moon Ho stopped him and made him see reason. Yes what eh did to those innocent hospital workers was bad, but I can't blame him.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

True, but I still felt it was out of character for him.

Be it Healer or Jung Woo, I cant see a violent/dangerous streak in him. Him getting the urge to kill Moon Shik feels fitting, but I never believed he would even be able to try. His heart is just too gentle for that.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

We need to remember that he acted out his anger as a kid by attacking his class mates. That got him into Juvie Hall. So that aspect of him is still there, but mostly under control and tamed until his emotions get the better of him.

That is part of the reason he warned YS that he could hurt her. That and the fact that people out to get him, could use her or she could get hit by stray fire, so to speak.

It is not a trait to be happy about, but it is totally true and in-line with the character and so kudos to the writer and actor for not shying away from the unpleasant aspects of an otherwise lovable, gentle soul.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Thanks GB , I actually forgot about his violent streak in school and the fact that he spent years in Juvie.

Teacher being the one to control is anger and channel it in proper way and now teacher's death is what pushed him out of reason in longest while.

0

:) at you Divyrus.

Glad that someone brought it up, because I felt very uncomfortable with it. Yes, it adds some emotional tinge in a way, that he´s so out of himself that he dosen´t care anymore, but then again, unjust violence is nothing to be glorified and in this case, it was glorified by the great pain.
I was already uncomfortable with him beating up Hwang-what´s-his-name, though he was a complete bastard and deserved it, but it was made look all awesome, because Healer made him pay while neither the law or media could touch him.
It´s just that Healer isn´t a Hero, who defends the weak or whatnot. His not anti-social and lives on the border of the society because he has to serve the People and he cannot afford any tying down. He dose it, so he can do his job and because he´s one damn wounded leopard.
So, I´d be ok with the violence, if it wasn´t shown as smth cool, I guess that´s what I wanted to say (huh, that came out looong)

I actually feel like this whole episode was about Jung-hoo letting himself cry. You can notice how in all these heart-wrenching scenes, his eyes were brimming, no practically overflowing with tears. And his pain was so raw and visceral in these moments that I actually didn't realize that he hadn't really let any of those tears fall yet. It wasn't until his tears actually fell at the very end, in Young-shin's embrace, that I realized he hadn't even really cried up to that point. It hit me in that moment, for some reason, how amazing Ji Chang-wook is. Like, he made me feel his pain so vividly that I didn't even notice that he hadn't actually cried yet. And then he breaks down at the end and just wow. Such a powerful performance.

As always, so well said @Chandler! How do you do it?!?

All the pain that he has accumulated in his life and that has been weighing him down has finally become to much to bear. When he was near his breaking point, YS became his only lifeline and his support. Only in her arms can he feel like he has someone to lean on and to show his vulnerability to. Those tears that he let fall on her shoulders was heartbreaking but also relieving in a way since he can finally let all those repressed feelings out.

Remember our discussion on how she was his only lifeline?

This scene proved it more and made it more fitting on how she is the one who is bringing him to back into the world.
And as you rightly said, finally giving in and showing his vulnerability to her, completely breaking down, he just completely surrendered himself to her.
And in doing so, able to breathe properly in longest while!

I loved it when she actually wiped his tears and he looked like such a small kid. Like he has never grown up from being abandoned.

OMG!!! OMG!!! How many times do I have to say this word?? If "Empress Ki" showcased JCW's acting ability, then "Healer" certainly defined him as a highly talented actor. I was most impressed with the last ten minutes of this episode, which I admit I have rewatched many times already!! JCW's exemplary facial features and 183cm height aside, the range of emotions he showed in the episode...the outright despair and grief over the Teacher's passing, the loss of direction and care for the world, and the yearning for love and belonging. Writer Song peeled back each of these layers to its very raw core and JCW delivered each of these so brillantly that my heart really ached for the character.

It was so satisfying to see the mental struggle through Jung Hoo's eyes between his fears and wants and him finally giving in to his desire for love as he melted into Young Shin's open arms. In stark contrast to shutting himself from society and people, Jung Hoo has finally made that gigantic leap of faith, displaying his vulnerable side.

It is fitting to that the final kiss scene was against the backdrop of his dream Island. In the end, it's not about the place, it's about who you spend your life with.

This ending made the marathon wait to the next episode just that much easier to bear.

the part where YS used the stethoscope on JH's door bugged me a bit since it's just so unnecessary. the sign just swings back all on its own? they could've portrayed her just frantically pushing/shoving things and accidentally touched the sign or something to make it more believable

Required fields are marked *

I disagree. For me, it was an added bonus to show again CYS's skills, her expertise in breaking in. And it was the gadget that made the sign swing to open the door--the kind of gadget that cracks safes.

Shoving and banging and shouting? Our badass heroine has much more elegance than that. She came prepared, with her arsenal, to break into Healer's lair. And then, of course, with TLC and more, to break into his heart.

no i'm okay with her showing off her skills in opening locks like she did with the elevator door, but in this case the sign really swing on its own without any action from her. she was in front of the door while the sign was hung behind her

I was thinking,
Hey, that's too easy!
Isn't his pad supposed to be a fortress, which no one can enter unless he lets them in?
If an amateur like YS can open the door in 5 mins., how safe is our Healer in his Healer-cave, when his enemies hire professionals to put a hit on him? Altho, the "Doble" S goons would never get in. They can't find their own axxholes from the look of it.

i guess finding the way to his door itself is already a challenge. YS only managed to find it only by the map's guidance, and even then had had to backtrack and break in a few times

0

@siesta
Getting to the door seemed really challenging. I was surprised by how long it took to CYS get to the door. I thought the sign swung after she pressed herself against the door since their connected somehow.

Also, imagine how tiring it would be for the Healer to get inside his house after one of his missions. I think I would faint on my way to the door.

HOMAYGAHD. This drama is beautifulllllll. When he said he's cold and Yeong Shin took off her jacket, I thought she was going to cover him and I was sooooo floored when she went closer and actually cuddled with him. FROG! It was too much for my heart. I was crying and squealing at the same time.

So we're now up against the bad guys! More action please!

Thanks for the recaps, javabeans!

I can't believe myself but, you guys, how attractive was he when he started to kiss her back? His face relaxed, and you could see him just give in completely to it, and OMG. I can't. *facepalm* I don't know what to do with myself.

Yes, the moment he gives in to his desire, it's just so sweet.

Re-watching the scene (over and over again), my heart skips a beat the moment where YS pulls him back for the hug and he lets her and then his body just kind of sinks into her. So intimate and sensual. Gaaaah

Ther really should have given us at least one extra second you know!
ONE EXTRA SECOND!

Its too cruel to freeze it there. Cruel !

Make that 15 extra seconds! I felt that the time given to him to cry was too short. He should have been given a chance to weep properly with sobs, before his tears got wiped away.

And that kiss would have developed into one of great solace to both .... just a few seconds more... they should have edited part of YS searching for Healer's pad and given us those seconds in kiss time. :)

OMG! Thank you for the recap and thoughtful comment. I totally agree with you...

This episode just really great!
I especially like the last message from Master and even made me mourning more for his death. Like MoonHo this episode, he's finally planning a significant move against his brother. It's about time.
The phone conversation between Youngshin and MyungHee also made my heart throbbing. Definitely going to anticipate their meeting which might happen in next week episode.

And, of course we have our OTP that actually hit great direction this episode. I also glad they didn't exaggerate the Bongsoo-is-Healer thing, instead they made it full of emotion and appropriate. When JeungHoo thought that Youngshin was only on his dream, it made my tears burst out. Moreover, it followed by sweet hug.
The kiss was also beautiful. It is started by Joonghu that questioned & rejected everything and then eventually had accepted Yeongshin thus he cried. I also love the fact that Yeongshin was the one who initiated the kiss and when he kissed her back, my tears just burst out again.

It is a very decent episode of Healer and of course we still have 6 days in waiting. Meanwhile, I will keep replying all those scenes in uTube and in my mind. Also, might be imagining what will happen after the kiss... Hehehe...

Omg wen so funny so cute. Let's keep the threads G rated please, we have innocent youngsters here lol.

I miss BongSooki so much. He is the like the coolest second lead. Jung hoo being the main lead of course. ;)

My heart aches every time I rewatch this episode. It makes my heart bleed for him. It's so sad. My eyes tear up every single time. You feel his sadness and unbearable loneliness. :( :( :(
