So, this Noona is back from Croatia! I went to places on Istria peninsula mostly – Vrzav, Porec, Rovinj (careful there, they are extreme businessmen. They could sell you an elephant and convince you it will fit in your gloves´compartment. ) Seriously, Rovinj is a scary town, they got family businesses where you are handed over from the big sister to the dad, from dad to little sister, from little sister to mother, then granny, uncle, aunt and cousin Who´s ex-mother-in law´s half borther´s adopted son. Each one of them has some sort of a shop – wine, cheese, truffle, oil, lace, ceramics, fish - and then next thing you know you are on the son´s boat on your way to their beach bungalo, your bags loaded with cheese, truffle pateé and blueberry wine, you are wearing a local folk costume, a captains hat and more jewelry than Mr. T, and you dont know how you got there. I....don´t remember that happening to the korean noonas.
I also went to Postojna caves in Slovenia, which were really cool, but overcrowded with germans, and the time you spent there was limited. I saw the Predjama castle. And oh, I went to Venice, which is way tourist oriented and the locals who dont sell anything or work at a restaurant try to be as invisible as possible, I felt sorry for them. The museums were quite expensive – 20 euros just to see ONE painting? Get out of here. Well, we only had 6 hours. But we ate gelato, bought a mini-harmonica, some sun-dried tomatoes, cheese and sardines (I love sardines but they cost like 4 euros here, in Venice they were just 67 cents! )
We stayed at Funtana resort and man, did they feed us... My Mom said she wants to go to Greece next but I am scared. The Greek will probably feed us until we explode.
And you wont believe how hard working the croatians are. The bakeries are open at 6 am (cause people go to work before 7 and buy stuff along) and the gardeners start their day at 6.30. Fishermen went out 5.30 am – I ran to the harbour and saw it. dear me. And those pastries. How come I only gained 1 kg? I thought just the smell of the pastries will turn me into a big fat hipopotamus.
Now back at home and things on the political front still crazy. Russia taking missiles and attackers to Belarus, detaining Lithuanian ships, stalinistic style of paintings where P is 7 ft tall and saves babies from tigers has returned. But all this is unimportant next to the fact people are incapable of doing something to stop climate warming. How can folks who march on the streets of NY and then throw away 185 000 coffee cups and plastic bottles right on the street be smart enough to do anything. They cant even sort the garbage. All the speeches, all the big words, in the end, I have no faith in any real action. People are too lazy. Same for their behavior towards Russia.
YIKES, cost of ordering photos 56 euros + album 18 plus glue - what am I doing, am I insane?
as for dramas, My Secret Hotel and the 2 stooges really remind me of Estonian movie Summer where the main character like a girl he used to tease at school, but the girl teases him right back getting fake-engaged to his rival, and then they size each other up all the time, but in the end the main character gets the girl. she is snarky and independent just like Sang-hyo
and it is getting more and more mysterious. I started drawing an event map to keep track of all the connections. it is somewhat confusing.
oh, a question... hmm.
we saw the first stills and teaser from Nodame, which were shot in Salzburg, Austria (been there! but we had seminars all day long)
if you could choose a location for a drama (say, rom-com) where would it be? what would be your perfect setting?
Hmmmmm, I would like for them to do Switzerland.....India did it to death with Bollywood movies back in the 90's what with all the running around on snow-capped mountains in skimpy clothing (a.k.a Sarees lol, which are gorgeous and totally inappropriate for winter weather) and dancing under orange trees with big juicy oranges that look like they are about to drop of the tree and knock someone out....ha.
I want to see what K-Drama land will make of that.
I'm not from there but I definitely saw that movie and a few other Bollywood films shot there! The clothing was definitely not appropriate fircthecweatgervlol. It would be interesting to see what a kdrama would do there though.
I don't know but I love ruins, it could be anywhere and I would love it. It could be roman or greek ruins, I've only seen Indian and Bangladeshi ruins though. So I wouldn't mind the firoz shah kotla fort and Hauz Khas fort in delhi, or the Bishnupur temple ruins of West Bengal, Maybe vijayanagara ruins of Hampi!
Oh your mini travelog just kicked in my wanderlust. I have a friend who lives on a tiny little Greek island. I' so want to go but I keep thinking I'd have to deal with resentment from the local populace because of all the boatloads of African refugees. What a mess the world is in!
we missed one planned location, Plitvice National Lake Park, which was flooded, it was pretty bad, people evacuated and animals stuck in abandoned farms, poor things! hope they rescued them somehow. we went to Lake Balaton, Hungary, instead. a really beautiful place, so many sailboats, all that paprika and flower patterns everywhere. But I intend to go back to Croatia once more for those missed lakes and waterfalls. I do recommend this country, it is so peaceful, people are friendly and fun-loving, and the food and transport are cheap!
oh absolutely, but they do it for you. before you even say anything they let all the prices down. it is ridiculous! but they have fun selling stuff like this, and since estonians are veeeeery slow to decide some got impatient and just sold us everything with extra discount so to get us to move on. LOL
lol! My best friend in college was Estonian. And yes, she had to be the most wary person. I hate bargaining..which is weird cause Jamaicans are good at that. But i think you've given me a ploy to use in bargain situations...just stand there thinking...thinking...thinking...
if you just stand there without even nodding then they will call a doctor. cause people there are always moving around... the only time I saw a person just lying around was when I passed a petanque field where some old men were rolling balls, others were nagging and yelling very loud, some where trying to mess up the strike, some where giving directions and then one guy was on a chair snoring, mouth open and didnt move at all despite the noise
now I am a bit worried if he woke up or not...
not this time! instead, wehad cultural acivities and one day planned for the tripto Venice. I know there is alot to d on Istria Peninsula... we saw the islands from afar though.
the only thin I surprisingly did not find was music stores! I wanted to buya CD with croatian music and just couldn´t find them anywhere.
Hmph, the music stores in Croatia are pretty much extinct like the dinosaurs. The last one in Pula closed few months ago after struggling for years. And looking for croatian music, were you searching for contemporary stuff, or more "folk fest" oriented.Traditional music from the coast is very different from that of the continental regions.
If you visit again don't miss the inland part of Istria, it's quite beautiful. Apart of PoreČ, Rovinj and Vrsar points of much interest to visit (in Istria) are the islands of Brijuni, Barban (if you visit in August) because of the "Trka na prstenac" (hard to explain...google it),the little towns in the inland as Roč, Hum, Motovun (film festival in the summer),Groznjan (many art-shops an cultural events), Višnjan (astronomical observatory),and Pula, where a tourist guide will bring you exhaustion, making you walk all over town showing you the Arena , the Forum an other roman ruins, telling you that the Von Trapp family (The Sound of Music) lived there, and the author James
Joyce had his coffee here, and so on. Make sure to visit some of this next time. Best do it during summer, the number of festivals and events is endless, although this summer was the worst in years weather-vise, if you don't love rain (not Rain- I love him). If you like some quiet to look around without the endless hordes of Italian and German tourists, come in spring or autumn ( the prices are more convenient too).
oh, really? I was looking for nothing in particular, maybe in croatian language but not necessarily traditional. But I found Radio Istra on the net and I get plenty of music from that!
I did go to Motovun but it was so scary I am afraid of heights and the bus made these sudden turns on the edge of the steep hill and omg and looking down from that balcony up there help me.
also,I kind of feel like there weren´t as many museums as we have, I think. it is more the environment itself and different cultural events. I actually think I could spend a whole year there and there is always some sort of fascinating activity to take part of. festivals, workshops celebrations...
Museums in Istria...nope, apart from the Archaeological Museum of Istria and maybe the Labin Town Museum everything is on a small scale. For some serious museum experience Zagreb (the capital) is the place to go.
Quick question: do prosecutors actually move around with the cops sometimes, accompanying them in their cases? While pulling roundhouse kicks?
*points finger at Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang*
In mine, Singapore, they don't. The cops do all the investigative work and gather the evidence. The prosecutors only start work when investigations are concluded, to decide whether to charge and prosecute the case.
In dramaland, anything is possible. In Korea, prosecutors seem to be very well regarded. Maybe they really have enhanced powers compared to other countries. I regard prosecutors as being almost the same as a lawyer in private practice in terms of the work they do - they're just representing different sides in court.
I think in most countries that would not happen.....only in K-Drama land.....maybe in Korea for real....who knows, lol. Usually it would be as Rachel says and the detectives make a case and present it to the courts and the lawyers and prosecutors take over.
The way kdrama makes it, one ends up thinking that the prosecutor is the real detective.
What amazes me is how they always seem to move about with their burly guards/back-ups/minions/police etc in that whenever they raid an illegal business, for example a gambling parlour, they wind up fighting the bad guys and its all kicks here and punches there.
I dunno about Korea, but I've never met any District Attorneys (US equivalent) that were capable of doing any sort of roundhouse kicks. Or even capable of rocking a designer suit. Most of them I've met look more like they're one jelly donut away from critical mass.
If I remember right, South Korean prosecutors can actually get directly involved in criminal investigations. This is a quirk of their legal system. They are therefore responsible for the entire investigative process and court prosecutions.
It's not exactly a quirk. S Korea follows the inquisitorial system of justice, as in many European countries like France, where prosecutors and judges take a much more direct role in criminal investigations. The US, Canada, Australia and, I guess, Singapore as mentioned above, etc follow the common law adversarial system. The police are responsible for criminal investigations and then present their case to the, in what it's called in my country, Crown which then decided whether or not to file charges and proceed to trial. This was the backstory of You Are All Surrounded where the female chief of police wants to have the Congressman, or whatever he was, present a bill in government to remove prosecutors from criminal investigations because she thinks they are too easily corrupted. Countries around the world have different ways of handling their justice systems. There are good and not so good points to both the adversarial and inquisitorial systems.
About the ability to administer roundhouse kicks and go one on ten in a gangland knife fight, I really have no idea.
Heh, I said quirk cuz I'm more used to the common law system rather than the civil law one. But it is as you've pointed out. Their active role in prosecutions has brought quite a number of crackdowns on corrupt high-ranking officials, so that is pretty good in itself.
As for the violence bit, I have no idea. I've seen HK cops in HK dramas beat up their suspects... when the cameras are turned off. A lot of banging of tables too...
nah, I cannot keep vampires. my blood is thin and I dont have wine in this house either, cause I hate it. they would get too weak to even kick a crawling spider not to mention the baddies.
Last Friday I started on Answer Me 1994 and raced through it in 5 consecutive days. I even endured those long 90 minute episodes (some parts of it positively snooze-worthy).
Cray-cray right? I'm both happy and sad that it's over. I'm so pleased that they're happy in the present time and still as close as family. Clearly I've been willingly sucked into the AM1994 universe because I'm talking about them like they're real. I'm happy with the eventual pairing. But I found it really hard to side with either husband candidate because I love them both, and that made me sad.
Being able to watch Youth Over Flowers in Laos so soon after finishing AM1994 is a really nice conclusion. Yoo Yeon Seok is now my ideal husband, Baro is a puppy, and Ho Joon is my grumpy dad. Looking forward to more Answer Me references!
I have a hard time with the Reply series.... they have all been so hyped that I am scared to watch it in case I get seriously disappointed... plus, I like Chilboongie and don't want to see him alone :(
That said, I am currently watching 1997 and so far it is intense....although on occasion, I want to smack Jung Eun Ji's character....so annoying, but a crazy insane fangirl. Am up to episode 8 and feeling so bad for Joon Hee.....poor baby (well done Hoya, now I see what everyone was talking about)
Ooh that's kind of spoilery! Regardless of its flaws, 1994 is still enjoyable and I hope you can derive some entertainment out of it. Whether a completed drama has been given great or terrible reviews, I try to approach it with an open mind and see what story it's trying to tell.
Yeah Shi Won can be annoying but in some way I can relate to her teenage fanaticism.
I do hope you at least watch Answer Me 1997... (Though I'm considering it, I haven't yet watched 1994 in case it tars my memory of 1997.)
It's obvious a lot of effort went into the writing, as everything felt so real: the dialogue between characters, the personalities, everyone's personal trajectory throughout the drama... You have to credit the actors, too, for playing their roles so well. All in all, a truly satisfying watch that I wish I could watch for the first time again. : )
Hello all, this week I'm spazzing over Secret Door. Han Seok Kyu and Lee Je Hoon is a revelation!! They are both very good, although LJH over acts sometimes. I enjoy the humor, the mystery, politics, thriller, everything. Even though I'm sure we'll be more than glad if we never ever come across Joseon politicians again. :)
As her first leading role, Kim Yoo Jung is pretty good, natural and charming. Also, her character in this drama is Bing Ae, the only woman supposedly loved by Sado. Then comes the question, if there's romance how would you see it? Will u agree, even when KYJ herself is still minor? I, for once, hope there's no romance in it. I'm sure dramas can still survive without it, as displayed in TWDR, God's Gift, ANL and maybe few others.
College has been driving me crazy. But since mid-semester break is coming up, I decided to bunk 3 days and just spend my time in Kolkata, India. Durga Puja there would be another experience, so I'm all packed up for tomorrrow's flight.
As for dramas, I completed It's okay It's love yesterday and it was worth it. The shoe scene made me cry. It was the least expected drama for me this year, I was not waiting for it at all from Joseon to High School, I expected everyone of them to be good, but nothing gripped me as this drama did. I was a lot hesitant because of the writer and actor's last collab together, I didn't want to watch another unethical (TO ME) and nerve grating so called forbidden relationship. But thank god it didn't go that way. Anyways bottom line its my favorite so far in 2014.
Then there is secret door, humph... Well truthfully I don't like it yet but I'm ready to give it another week before deciding if I want to watch or not.
"My Secret Hotel": Oh, so much angst. And snarky laughter. And hot-bodied men wearing only towels (thank you, Nam Goong Min.) But it needs more detectivin' and less love triangle, thanks. (Also, ep 10 could not possibly have shown a bigger contrast between the men, as Hae Young did a musical number that was essentially "Look at me, I'm awesome!" and Sung Gyum did one that amounted to "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman")
"Surplus Princess": Oh, Chef - him smiling while thinking of of Ha Ni eating her fish right from the bone was so sweet. And Adjusshi taking the discouraged housemates for a vacation was beautiful (especially his gentle nudging of the Horndog to a realization of why he got angry when Ha Ni talked about "Praying Mantis Guy".) I'm so upset that this series has been knocked down to 10 episodes. ::grumpyface::
Night Watchman: I haven't watched this week's second episode yet, but I'm sure there will be more nonsensical bad-guy plot and more shots of beautiful textiles. (Though who else is gobsmacked that the guy playing Sa Dam is the same one who played the secretary in "Secret Garden"?)
Discovery of Love: Honestly, I don't know why I'm watching this. Oh, wait - Sol and Joon Ho, that's why.
Hero: 2009 series about a plucky newspaper reporter and a corrupt politician. Also, Lee Joon Ki with red hair. Action, scheming, and comic shenanigans.
Started watching:
Blade Man: My husband says the title was clearly mistranslated, and it should read: "Wolverine: You're Doing it Wrong". snerk. I've only seen the first episode, but...whoa, this is a weird-ass series. I just. ::throws up hands::
Wish I could watch:
Another thriller with Lee Joon Ki (please tell me he's looking at scripts with more action and less crying than Joseon Gunman).
K-drama Moment:
I mentioned this in another thread - recently, my 13 year old son and I were watching dramas together, and I was giving him advice ("Don't grab women like that."/"That's not romantic, that's creepy." etc.) Eventually, I told him, "Just be the second male lead - except more talkative."
When he complained "But you know they never get the girl", I related the story of his father and I...and how he was the second male lead of my personal drama.
See, I was dating this rich guy - he was handsome, but also rude, and imperious, and he drank too much (classic male lead characteristics). I left him for my sweet-and-steady husband who always watched out for me (sound familiar?). Both of them proposed at the same time (two guys vying for your affection? Not as fun as it sounds, by the way.)
I told my son "High school girls want the jerk lead male because they don't know any better. Once they date a few of them, they realize that who they really want is the sweet second lead male - and then it's your time...
First post here.. hello everyone!
I have been newly introduced to the world of Kdrama through Faith(stupid stupid show) and city hunter (saw it 3 times despite all its plot holes). Then I saw Arang and Two weeks and had this weird thought.. how would Lee Jun Ki be as City Hunter?
Nah...he might posture, but at heart he's really a romantic softie (seriously - my son reads romances and likes romantic movies. He'll make some girl an awesome boyfriend. Eventually.)
Also amused by your Night Watcgman comments. The textiles are really beautiful. I recognized Sadam from the very beginning but it still was quite a shock. He looks very different.
Maybe the textiles are secretly the reason that the episodes tend to fly by for me! I'm also watching Arang and the Magistrate right now which is also full of pretty textiles. My wardrobe is looking more and more pitiful.
I don't know, honestly - my area of interest is really early Norse textiles.
But I know that jacquard looms (or the equivalent thereof) were around in at least the late 1700's in France - I don't know when 'Night Watchman' is supposed to be set, and I don't know what kind of trade routes were available. So...::shrug::
I find his( Sadam guy) eye colour is quite different from other actors, his colour is very light brown. But as Sadam, he is always in dark place so it is hard to see his striking eye colour.
When I wrote my first romance novelette I had the second lead get the girl. (I don't think this spoiler is going to ruin it for anyone.) I did it on purpose because I had just watched "Greatest Love" and while watching it, I shipped the doctor SOOOO hard.
Finally! Someone who shares my sentiment regarding The Greatest Love. I think the reason why I didn't like it was because I thought they were unjust to the second lead. I mean, what did he do wrong? He was sweet, he was minding his own business and then he got wrapped up along with the dating game. And there was false hope!! Why must the writers do that? I think that started my so called hatred toward show no matter how admittedly great the show was. I have a soft spot for second leads. I just do. :)
Last week you mentioned HBO's Carnivàle. The episode where Rita Sue and Stumpy’s loose and flirtatious daughter went missing was the turning point for me. Prior to her abduction, the daughter had bragged about how she didn’t have a problem with men lusting after her or wanting sex from her. Sadly, it came to pass in the form of infinity for her eternally persisting forever in a hell hole of her own making. The writing and subtext of that episode was a game changer. Carnivàle was different and deep. It was not afraid to go there.
@harmonyfb: LOVED your kdrama moment...and love that you share your love of kdramas with your son! :)
I'm also a second lead shipper, especially when the lead male is a jerkface who doesn't deserve the lead female. Second leads are always the good dependable guys, and it crushes me when they can't nab the girl at the end...obviously, they're written to create that darned "love triangle" when nearly the majority of the time, the lead male nabs the girl.
Two examples where I didn't like the second lead more than the lead -- Master's Sun and Fated to Love You, because the chemistry between the leads were spot-on.
and love that you share your love of kdramas with your son! :)
He has a huuuuuge crush on Jo Bo Ah (he was so invested in who she wound up with in "Shut Up Flower Boy Band" - it was adorable.)
and it crushes me when they can’t nab the girl at the end
Oh, "Flower Boy Next Door" broke my heart into a million pieces. (And "Surplus Princess" made me realize that even if I think I'm shipping the lead, I'm really shipping the second lead.)
So much cooking to do today and tomorrow^^ We’re gonna have my birthday party a week late so family will meet tomorrow and they want to be fed xD Cooking marathon it is^^
I just found out that Joo Won + Shim Eun Kyung were in Salzburg to shoot for Cantabile Tomorrow and I’ll be forever bitter… Salzburg is like an hour away from where I live T_T
9 Boys: So I guess we’re gonna get into the phase where Se Young’ll slowly realise that Jin Goo’s serious about her. It’s about time^^
I’m not sure what to think about Da In though. I mean I get that a boyfriend who is busy with his work and keeps postponing or cancelling plans sucks but she didn’t have to suck it all up. And she was always telling him it was okay! I honestly thought there was more behind their break up?! Just freaking TALK to each other -.- But then I guess that applies to nearly all drama couples out there :P
Secret Hotel: Girl he left you his address + a plane ticket… And you could have talked about that issue yet you decide to be angry then mope when he leaves because of his work until you faint and then hate him? What is it w/ all those stupid explanations for break ups tvN?
Just find someone else Hae Young… Not reporter chick though because redundant character is redundant :P
Musketeers: Seung Po and the princess remain my favourite characters and I really hope that this week we get a bit more insight of the relationship of the Prince and Mi Ryung! I need to know what exactly happened between those two.
My Spring Days: I binge watched the first 4 episodes bc after reading a lot of positive comments I had to give it a try. And I really like it =) Sooyoung is doing a solid job and I like her rapport w/ Kam Woo Sung so far! I’m ready to give all my tears to this one :D
Secret Door: Is it too much to hope that they go really dark? I mean I don’t know too much about the historical background (just the overall story which javabeans and girlfriday have provided) but it sounds like it could make for a great dark drama! Please go there! Even if it’s gonna break my heart :D
Variety:
RM: This was a hilarious episode! There’s nothing better than some fierce ladies who challenge the Running Man cast. Lee Yoo Ri was on fire and even though I felt bad for Kwang Soo I was laughing my ass off when she used him as a human ladder :D
It was nice to see that the ladies went for variety and didn’t hold back! They seemed to have a lot of fun with the cast and the games and that’s what made this a great episode =)
There are so many more moments that had me laughing like a crazy person and this will definitely be an episode to watch again and again and again xD
I understand this feeling. Was like me going to China and I found out my favorite japaneese band was going to play a concert in London and Sweden (I think.. Another place in Europe anyway) was having a concert the week after. Except even more bitter in your case.
Is Three Musketeers any good? I have been let down by seguks lately, but I have a soft spot for Yang Dong-geun since Ruler of Your Own World (I saw that one three times).
Am lying in bed all cosy (sorta) waiting for this present bout of vertigo to go. Having all that time on my hands, I got to catch up on tonza stuff...especially We Got Married.
I started watching it again because of Song Jae Rim, who is just absolutely cool and such a player..but a sweetie. Just the kind honest upfront accessible person. I'd thought he would be a style-fashionista type but except for his gangster scarf and motorcycle, he's just a convenience store striped shorts kinda guy. So loving him but also fell for Nam Goong Min (from Secret Hotel) and just loving that romance. So yeah, had to catch up on all his episodes.
Night Watchman: This show has totally grown on me. And now the double crosses, the triple crosses, the double double crosses are making every conversation between all the bad guys just so fun to watch. Wasn't feeling the Ghost of Tragedy, though. No gravitas..or at least for me, guyliner and goth costuming do not gravitas make. Not really on board with the romance either but i guess it's to be expected.
Reset: Ah, me. This mystery is getting quite intriguing. Who knew I wanted normalcy and manstream and a procedural? I still cringe at all the coincidences and convenient plotting but wow...it scratches an itch i didn't know i had.
Three Musketeer: Ah me! The erotic death embrace of our prince and the femme fatale! And the humiliation and embarrassment of our Dal Hyang! I had only been expecting emotion from the Crown Princess' sub-plot, but was good to show that the action side of things can bring emotions as well. Yong Hwa does humiliation well.
Time Spiral: Don't know where this drama is going..in a good way. It feels a bit like a perverse Mirae's Choice.
If I continue being stuck in bed I'll catch up on Surplus Princess, Iron Man, and Yoona's Street...maybe Happy Together and Cool Kiz.
Gotta love dramas for keeping one's mind off illness. Gotta love the hubby too. While being married to a guy with extreme Asperger's has been its own personal circle of hell, I'll say he has been so good to me and our son with our issues. Women with fibro get divorced a lot in our society, and parents of kids diagnose with autism also divorce a lot. But most folks with Asperger's are incredibly stalwart. So am feeling blessed...well, sick but blessed.
It's a j-drama with Gackt about a time traveller who has returned to this timeline to find his love and to prevent her from marrying his rival. Lord knows if she died in the other timeline or what.
He's his mysterious vaguely erotic self...with maybe a bit of menace because he is so controlling. Because it's a jdrama, I'm trusting sentimentality won't drive the plot.
Gackt is in this? Okay now I have to watch. I've seen a few of his interviews (like the one where he recommended males to weear pink fluffy g-strings...9 guy seems fun.
I just finished ep4 on Drama.net. in the end of drama, Gackt was staring his board with newspaper clips and said to himself, ' what can I do to change?' Unfortunately, the sub did not pick what is written on the board. Some clips show that the violist was drowned and died and a newspaper speculated that she killed herself due to a heartbreak. Other clip was briefly shown and it tells that the main girl was killed during the kidnap. He has been attempting to change the violist's fate, since the violist is Gackt's beloved sister, I assume.
I didn't get what was on the board so thanks for telling me. Not sure if coming trailer is really a spoiler though cause another site might have translated the newsclippings. Question now...philosophical... and trying to think like a Japanese (knowing their very strong "accept life however it comes" ethic): would they think it is"wrong" of the Time traveller to not "accept" the death?
So far it looks as if the time traveller saved our heroine (can't really call her that cause she is so passive) in order to save his sister. (Of course heaccidentally got her kidnapped to begin with.) So how many times has he changed the past ..and failed to save Mami-chan?
This drama is certainly interesting( each episode is shorter) because I have no idea what will happen in the end. The main guy is too mysterious and I have no idea where he is actually from. I do not know if the female lead would choose the mysterious her first crush or her long time friend who shared her trauma.
while I was watching the drama, i thought that the make up in this drama is much more cakey and dark compared to make up in Korean drama( Pale and dewy)
In the first episodes, Meisa Kuroki has a very dark under eyes... She has been working non stop with a baby in hand, so maybe that is why. Sleep deprivation does make dark circles. This drama is produced by NHK which is Japanese public TV station. They produce many Taiga dramas( yearly long historical drama, usually aired on Sunday nights). I find many actors and actress in this series have very cakey make up. The make up artists have to change their cosmetics!!
By the way, you are right. He has some skin issues. If this were in Korea, he would go under laser treatment or something.
Plus Nine Boys:
So loving the Mingu love story and also Dong gu's career storyline. I hope they stick to the audition acting thing for a while and wait for the love line later.
and What's with this Family?:
I think this is one of my faves this season. Light for the most part. Wthout any angst. Am hoping our youngest lovebirds tell their love to each other. And hoping the "secret" is out soon. I hate these long secrets that go on forever.
You're feeling sick, but I have to say that the part about being all cozy in bed sounds fabulous! ...... What a way to catch up on drama-viewing! I wish I could do that. Heh.
But seriously, though, take care and have a great weekend also.
Will do and thanks for the good wishes. Manin keeps telling me about a Thai drama she's watching. So..i might be watching that if this bedriddenness continues.
Go for it! You won't regret it! Okay, you might. The screaming is intense. But so addictive. :p
I'm not really selling this show well... Carole will tell anyone. :p
I think Shuk has seen it as well? Maybe, it was recommended on here ages and ages ago by someone (possible Julia? I don't know. It was a long and intense search trhough my youtube watch history to find it as I'd forgotten the name)
I think Julia recommended it at the beginning of the year. Well, right now i'm just sitting here amazed at all the big hair as i told you. It has a latin american telenovela feel and yes, there is something strangely addicting about the 80's weirdness. So far mom seems very willful re son's getting married. The bad video is hard to muddle through at first but i'm determined to make it through because you say it'll get better. Thegay art director...cringe.
Yeah the quality is not great at first. It does get better though, so it's all about getting over that part (and then you're hooked)
Love the mum though as you say she is quite forceful with her son. It's sorta wierd because I know had it been the other side, we probably would have disliked her. But can't help but like her.
Ah Sasha right? Yeah he is.. interesting. He is awesome in his own right though. Such a good friend to the second lead; in that he wants what's best for her, even if it means yelling at her and telling her when she goes to far.
Last weeks scenes at the temple in Night Watchman - just the overall vibe - briefly reminded me of Arang & The Magistrate. I'm not sold on the romance either.
I finally had the time to check out the 1st episode of Reset this week.
I'm watching a full slate of dramas: Surplus Princess, Iron Man (its starting to settle down now), Three Musketeers, Discovery of Romance, My Secret Hotel, Plus Nine Boys, She's So Lovable, Feel-Good Days, and Mandate of Heaven.
I plan to start Yoona's Street once I finish Mandate of Heaven (currently at episode 14).
Time Spiral sounds interesting. I have a soft spot for Yoon Eun-Hye, Jung Yong-Hwa, and Oh Jung-Se in Mirae's Choice.
Ah, that temple! I wish i feared the Sea God more. A part of me wants to see a big blaze of glory CGI ending for seagod but I'm not sure how sea god's gonna rise from stone without vengeance ghosts and when it's lacking yin energy. <-- just reread that , and really the strange sentences one writes when discussing drama.
Speaking of WGM: I went down to read the comment on the recaps you sendt me Carole: And I was laughing so much to see the first comment being "I wonder if Mary has hired an assassin yet?" with someone else commenting "so there are more DB readers on here" xD
Indeed. At least it's making its way through all the english speaking forums it seems. Would be funny if it starts appearing in the korean sites (which I suppose someone else would have to tell us if it did)

I started drawing an event map to keep track of all the connections. it is somewhat confusing.
oh, a question... hmm.
we saw the first stills and teaser from Nodame, which were shot in Salzburg, Austria (been there! but we had seminars all day long)
if you could choose a location for a drama (say, rom-com) where would it be? what would be your perfect setting?

we missed one planned location, Plitvice National Lake Park, which was flooded, it was pretty bad, people evacuated and animals stuck in abandoned farms, poor things! hope they rescued them somehow. we went to Lake Balaton, Hungary, instead. a really beautiful place, so many sailboats, all that paprika and flower patterns everywhere. But I intend to go back to Croatia once more for those missed lakes and waterfalls. I do recommend this country, it is so peaceful, people are friendly and fun-loving, and the food and transport are cheap!

Depends on which jurisdiction you're in I guess.

If I remember right, South Korean prosecutors can actually get directly involved in criminal investigations. This is a quirk of their legal system. They are therefore responsible for the entire investigative process and court prosecutions.

Does that quirk extend to physical involvement/use of force in dealing with the offenders by the prosecutors themselves?

September 26, 2014 at 7:23 AM

September 26, 2014 at 7:46 AM
Heh, I said quirk cuz I'm more used to the common law system rather than the civil law one. But it is as you've pointed out. Their active role in prosecutions has brought quite a number of crackdowns on corrupt high-ranking officials, so that is pretty good in itself.
As for the violence bit, I have no idea. I've seen HK cops in HK dramas beat up their suspects... when the cameras are turned off. A lot of banging of tables too...

Glad to be back on OT!

Happy friday!

Yay, open thread!!!
Let's talk about TV!
Watching this week:

Hey, but in the dramas, they always have the best, most stable marriages. :)
And yeah...Lee Joon Ki needs a superhero vehicle with lots of sexy-if-improbable fight scenes.

I have been newly introduced to the world of Kdrama through Faith(stupid stupid show) and city hunter (saw it 3 times despite all its plot holes). Then I saw Arang and Two weeks and had this weird thought.. how would Lee Jun Ki be as City Hunter?

He would be awesome, that's how. He's a really great actor. I've yet to see him in anything where he didn't own the role completely.
Definitely see "Two Weeks" - he is amazing in it.

Did Korea have jacquard fabrics during that era?
I don't know, honestly - my area of interest is really early Norse textiles.
But I know that jacquard looms (or the equivalent thereof) were around in at least the late 1700's in France - I don't know when 'Night Watchman' is supposed to be set, and I don't know what kind of trade routes were available. So...::shrug::

Happy OT

Hello, all:
Have a great weekend, all.

This is a kind of SPOILER ALERT on Time Spiral::

September 26, 2014 at 8:56 AM

I think Julia recommended it at the beginning of the year. Well, right now i'm just sitting here amazed at all the big hair as i told you. It has a latin american telenovela feel and yes, there is something strangely addicting about the 80's weirdness. So far mom seems very willful re son's getting married. Love the mum though as you say she is quite forceful with her son. It's sorta wierd because I know had it been the other side, we probably would have disliked her. But can't help but like her.

Hi Carole,
I hope you feel better soon.
