MBC scrambles to film Hotel King in wake of PD departure
by javabeans
Oy, what a mess. There’s been a bit of a kerfuffle going on over at MBC, particularly over this past weekend when the drama Hotel King suddenly cut its main PD and had to scramble to get directing duties covered. The situation has elicited some criticism, not least because it all seems very messily handled; based on the statements being issued, nobody even knows what happened, and the explanations have been vague in the extreme.
Let’s start with what we do know. Hotel King kicked off with two PDs at the helm, Kim Dae-jin (previous works: Be Like Today, Tasty Life, Golden Age of My Life) and Jang Joon-ho (Aurora Princess). The drama operates two filming teams, with each PD directing one of them. But on May 12, it was decided (without warning, it seems) that Kim Dae-jin would leave the production. “Leave” is the nice word; “fired” is the understanding. No details were given on the specifics of the discussions leading to his firing.
MBC did try to assert that PD Kim Dae-jin left due to personal reasons, but Kim gave an interview stating that he was unceremoniously fired because writer Jo Eun-jung demanded it (previous works: Feast of the Gods, Goldfish). It’s less clear about the circumstances of the second PD’s circumstances; the news stories are focusing on Kim, but it was reported that PD Jang has also left the show.
On May 13, an emergency meeting was convened with MBC’s drama department PDs, although notably, Kim Dae-jin was not present. As a result, according to one PD who attended the meeting, there were gaps in understanding of the full situation (you think?), and thus another meeting will be held in short order with the entire department to decide what to do about the PD situation.
As of May 14, it was reported that directing duties had been divided between two other producers, Choi Byung-gil (Would You Give Love Away, When a Man Loves) and CP Kim Jin-min (God of War, Road No. 1). What’s unusual about this (aside from the obvious) is that a CP, a chief producer overseeing the whole production, is a high-level executive and not someone who gets involved in the actual filming duties, so clearly this is an emergency stopgap measure. It’s so unusual for a CP to assume director duties that the last time it occurred was during the 2012 labor strike, when the extreme situation forced the issue. Hotel King does still have episodes to put out, though, and they want to stay on schedule.
A representative from MBC stated in an interview, “The reason for the PD switch has not been clearly divulged. We will have to look into the truth of whether PD Kim Dae-jin made an error that merited his departure, or whether writer Jo Eun-jung demanded that he be fired. …We have not yet heard the stories from the involved parties directly. We will have to hear from them first.” You’d think they’d attend to that before issuing statements to the public, but what do I know, I’m not running a broadcast station.
Hotel King airs on Saturdays and Sundays, and has currently broadcast 10 of its planned 32 episodes.

I have yet to see anything from the writer that I thought was any good - including Hotel King. Feast of the Gods is still near the top of my "most hated drama waste of time ever" - beaten only by Heirs.
I vaguely recall Aurora Princess, but either never watched it or never got far.

Wowzers. I have really enjoyed the filming and direction of this show. The scenes are well shot - really giving us the emotion of the characters. I hope we don't lose that with the new replacements especially now that the birth secret was revealed.

Haha, so basically MBC fired the guy but they are not sure about the reason of this firing yet?
They should just get rid of this drama. It has good actors but they are clearly wasted in this makjang melo.

This is 3rd drama on my list to watch for the weekend anyway.
1) wonderful Season/Days
2) Wild Chives and Bean Sprout Soup
3) if i got time - Hotel King
bummer - wasted good talents on this show.

I thought I was the only one who thought this drama is a little too dark. It does give me a feeling of darkness. The murderous intrigue bad guys half doesn't seem to fit with the bizarre attempts at comedy with the manager, the maid-and dare I say it-even Lee Da Hae. Her character's noisy cuteness, dumbness, and immaturity seems way over the top for someone her age.
So it's like they can't make up their minds whether this is a comedy or tragedy. the tragedy part is weird and chilling, and the comedy part is also weird and chilling, now that I think about it.
I have to keep watching out of curiosity.

Great chemistry, that's for sure but with the nice scenery that's about everything this drama's got in my opinion.
The writing is just bad. I dropped the drama after Lee Da Hae's character went from funny crazy heiress to useless hotel president blinded by love in less than 10 episodes. It looks like we're headed for a lot of angst in the 22 remaining episodes; it's not the PDs that need to be changed here.

well, this past few years, you can count K-drama with good writing-mostly in cable channel.
With bad writing, only chemistry of the lead/cast and creative director can save it.

I agree, the two leads have amazing chemistry! And I also agree that Mo Ne could be written better, she is so clueless sometimes to the point of stupidity, but if it is the same writer as Feast of Gods..well...that explains it.
Lee Dong Wook is amazing here though...I am only watching for him! And the ex...so underused too...definitely the show needs more balance, you get more scenes of the manager and the housekeeper "love" story than the two second leads it seems. Hoping whatever happens the show gets better...else poor Lee Dong Wook, everything will be on his shoulders!

Ha! The last line made me laugh because it's SO true. A fan of the pairing but the drama is a mess. Lee Dong Wook is doing a great job as Jae Wan but I wished I liked Mo Ne better. She's not fit to lead this hotel and they need to start working on character development for her rather than banking on their chemistry by selling the love line first.

Boy do I agree with this. I'm really disappointed that Lee Da Hae is being cast as much dumber, and more silly and immature than she was 10 years ago in My Girl. C'mon, guys-10 years have passed, and she's acting more like a little kid that she did then? It's truly annoying, because she's loud and stupid and her mouth goes almost non-stop.
She was very cute, (beautiful, actually), a little silly, but smart in My Girl, and it was easy to see why he fell for her, not only in the drama, but in real life.
Now, the writers have not only ruined her personality as a leading lady to the same man-but-(and this is a personal criticism I know)-she is painfully skinny-maybe anorexic now?
Upshot-given the extreme difference in their character maturity levels, and a body that's almost not there, it's a really big stretch for me to imagine he he's in love with her. I want to, but I can't.
They must feel genuine affection for each other due to their personal and professional past. It's the drama characterizations that is the problem, I'm sure.
Also-that manager! He and Lee Da Hae are supposed to bring comic relief to an otherwise dark and dangerous film, but they are anything but funny. At least for a woman, they're like Curly, Moe, and Larry.

I've been watching Hotel King and it's pretty interesting, way more than Angel Eyes which I've dropped, even with all the makjang. I'm glad that the truth about the paternity is out because all the lovey dovey eyes between the leads was awkward since we were suppose to think Lee Dong Wook's character believed he and Mo Ne were biological siblings, but then he started falling for her too. Ick. Here's hoping the drama's general momentum, pacing, and story won't suffer from this PD change.

Oh my! I guessed it that there must be some issues... the drama is very addictive...I am still watching it but I must agree the Directing and the script or rather the dialogues are so weak. I did think about the possible issues baehind the camera.
The dialogues are weak and even meaningless in parts and also some of the plot doesn't make sense. Also there are so many awkward pauses where there is no dialogues and the actors are simply staring at the camera.
I love Lee Dong wook but man he is just so stoic in the drama! I will blame it on the Director for this or rather his botox injection on his jaws. He is either too tight with his expressions or he over emotes like in the last scene where he is crying saying taht he doesn't hate her- her lips, eyes...etc...LOL... That scene was cringe worthy and so unnecessary.
Lee Da Hae is doing her best and it makes her a seasoned actress. In facts he is holding it well even with the awkward pauses/ dialogues/ storyline/ sub plots.
Some people may reason with me saying of there are so many complains, why am I still watching it...well, the drama is just so addictive esp. Lee DongWook and Lee da Hae's possible chemistry and the output. I'll watch it as far as I can...
Problems behind the drama always reflects on the drama and one can tell if the production is going weak... I hope things get resolved soon.

I remembered the dream too. It is really not a very convenient time for him to judge both the TV series and a reality show when such things are happening, but I am not gonna complain of seeing him more on the screen.
As for drama itself, I want to hope that the change in production will be for the better, but I suppose the cringe-worthy bits in the drama are the fault of the writer ... Seriously, we have beautiful sets/ scenery, good actors, but very little of good dialogues or plot. Even if it's makjang, when the main character falls in love and has to deal with probably one of the main conflicts of the drama - realization that he loves his sister and cannot resist - one moment, and is relieved by the truth at the next one... I mean, there is a good material, do something with it while you can... and so on. Not to mention those awkward poses and cringe-worthy dialogues... The beautiful scenery should complement the mood, alone it is not enough. I still watch the drama because of the actors, but I find myself imagining different scenes with them. Not a good sign. So, I hope the change will bring something better (still, I guess, the writer is to blame, not PDs)...

@ gunner
SBS the best... MBC the worst... ???
Excuse me, but extrem statements are rarely true...
Which broadcasting station has the best or worst dramas? By which benchmark? TV quotas? Ahjummas rating (important in Korea)? For young viewers (dramas stuffed with idols)? Online/Video-on-demand? Foreign country sales? Product placement turnover? Internationale audience? Performance? Script? Directing? ...
In addition, it matters what kind of dramas you prefer. It depends which genre, PD's styles, actors, storytelling, visuals or scenery etc. are your cup of tea! Does "Heirs", "Faith" or "Fashion King" qualify because they are on SBS. But MBC dramas such as "King 2Hearts" , "Miss Korea" or "Two weeks" do not?
Obviously, there are quality dramas on ALL stations which are (a) loved by many people or (b) fail to gain an adequate viewership for various reasons. But on the flip side there are also dramas on every station which lack quality and could still be loved by many. Taste will lead you to defend and to stay through a drama (even if you suffer from its flaws). Do those flawed dramas also count to a positive resume for SBS? Just because they are loved? Or to say it more acurate, are 'mainstream'?
BTW, did you see most dramas of all stations, including cable networks to know that SBS is THE best in dramas?
For instance, if rating matters to you to judge quality: what to do with cable networks? They have gifted us with freaking awesome and innovative dramas (e.g. Heartless City, AM'97). But their rating figures will never reach those of public stations, since viewer have to pay for them and therefore, the audience is much smaller! How could they be compared to a powerful public broadcaster like SBS?
Sorry for the rant, but such extrem and exaggerated statements get under my skin. It's so unfair

HK isn't worth exploring for 32 eps. the Feast writer is a terrible writer to be honest. I ended up disliking JSW who was supposed to be the male lead, and absolutely loved LSW. Yet the ending was terrible after making LSW so smouldering desirable -- and just handing me a lollypop to suck on --- as an ending. So I've dropped HK 2 wks ago. LDH's role is annoying. give the dead bird to the writer!

The cinematography and directing are actually pretty good -- it's the writing that I don't like.
*SPOILER?*
I've been watching this drama and really liked the first few episodes. Lee Dong Wook's Jae wan and Lee Da Hae's Mo Ne were interesting characters that could go a long way together and separately.
When Ah Mo Ne started following Jae Wan and declared her love for him, I was like WHAT THE HELL. That was when everything went downhill for me. There was no progression to show how she had fallen in love with him. It was so out of character and that's what I didn't like.
The big reveal on episode 10 about them not being siblings was a good plot breaker, because Jae Wan could use that. I only wished Mo Ne hasn't told him that she loves him.
*SPOILER END*
Anyway, I'll still watch this drama, because 1. I already started it, and I hate not finishing a series; and 2. The chemistry between the leads.
It's just frustrating that I have to go through 22 more episodes of this writing and real world drama. Ugh, Korean drama industry.

For me the drama is so-so. There are other dramas currently airing which interests me more. Just realised they are at ep 10 out of 32!! what stories can they tell in another 22 episodes??? the plot seems quite thin.

I actually really like this show. I didn't think I would; sounded way too melo for my tastes, but I wanted to give it a try because of the main actors. I did get pulled in and actually watch for more than just the leads. All of this is just a total mess, and it's sad that it will probably make more people drop the show.

The story line made me lose interest. The brother/sister possibility made it even more ridiculous. Bad writing doesn't make it better. Production issues makes it a hot mess!

I haven't had a lot of time to really watch any dramas lately, and when I do have the time, I'm watching a Japanese drama called Tokyo Dogs, which is hilarious. I'm on the last episode, and since it's only 10 eps, I'm going to be moving on to something else. I like funny shows, and can really use a few laughs, so melodramas are just really downers.
That being said, I've wanted to watch Hotel King since I first heard about it. I LOVE Lee Dong-wook so much. He's so handsome, is a wonderful actor, and has a pretty great personality on top of that. I've never been a huge fan of Lee Da-hae, but I like the shows I've seen her in, which aren't many. Hearing about their show's woes is really upsetting and disappointing. Every time I turn around, it seems like, one show or other is having issues. Mostly because of the writers. I think drama writers get big heads when they write really popular shows with big time actors, or if they have big budgets, or even if they get great ratings. I just think they are given too much credit, when really their only about a fifth of the equation. Writing is important, but what really sells a show for me is the acting. I have to believe the actors, I have to want the best for the characters, I have to feel with the characters, laugh and cry with them, for me to really love a show. I don't really see the point of writers being paraded around, when the acting, directing, soundtrack and cinematography are just as important, if not more so.
Maybe I'm being a little bit harsh. Maybe I'm just tired of hearing about these types of things. Maybe I'm just still pissed about hearing earlier that SM Entertainment is in another lawsuit, this time with Kris of EXO (I'm firmly of Kris's side). Or maybe I'm dealing with personal issues, and using this as a means to vent some of my frustration. I don't know. All I do know, is I hope this gets sorted out, so when I do start to watch this show, I can just enjoy it. Is that too much to ask?

The drama is pretty dark and the characters are all so weird and satirical. I don't really appreciate this kind of writing but watching it slowly to see what happens with the leads.
Glad Jae Wan finally knows Mo Ne's not his sister because the bordering on incest attraction was not fun to watch.

Hotel king is the best drama that Ive ever watched. I don't know why people get bored w/ this drama. I mean, in each episode the plot is getting better. I can't get the way out of 10th eps. I watch it over and over again. Can't wait to see the next eps. I'm waiting for Cha Jae Wan to kill that jerky old man cz he's been lying to him And of course The real KISS of Mo Nae and Jae Wan xoxo !!
