It's almost time for a new year of K-dramas! w00t!

I'm LOVING PADAM PADAM. The second I started it I wanted to write about it.

I just finished my year-end review and seriously, I liked most of the stuff I watched this year. It was my first full year of k-drama. :D

What is everyone planning for the New Year? My friends from England are in-town so we're going to do...something! Hehe.

I've been busy recapping and blogging and enjoying the time off before work comes back...*twitch*

This year no plans for New Years Eve. Staying at home with mom and dad, having dinner, watching TV, stuff like then. The next day packing up, leaving town and starting a new year/new life :). Hmm I should prepare a resolutions list for 2012. I have never done that before.

Oh, well I think moving is enough of a resolution in and of itself!

I think that my resolution is probably the same. Save some money. Move. Travel....the things I'm planning to do anyway.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, moving and traveling are huge! Personally, I'm planning to spend New Years Eve reflecting on the past year and thinking about where I am in my life and how things could be different.

My co-workers and I all discussed our holiday plans, and it seems that none of us plan to do anything besides sit at home alone reflecting on our lonely states and feeling sorry for ourselves, and ending up crying. And we all joked that we were laughing about it as we talked, but it was actually the sad truth...

Could be worse; you could be alone AND locking up drunks all night long. Oh wait, that's me. :-)

Last year I had a singles party and let eveyone get plastered and stay overnight in my house, then I made breakfast, shoo'ed them al out, and enjoyed the silence.

I discovered my friends would rather drink wine than the hard stuff. Went through about 10 bottles of moscato and cabernet, and 3 bottles of champagne (sic).

0

I saw that your boyfriend is doing better in the polls. And the Newtster didn't even make it onto his home ballot. Ha!

Don't get too caught up in "what ifs" on New Years Eve. Me...I'm personally glad 2011 is over, it was not a fun year on a lot of levels. But, my bffs and I are planning a family party, finding somewhere to watch the Times Square ball drop in real time (which is 9 pm our time) and going to bed at the usual time. Life goes on....

Hope 2012 is happy, healthy and prosperous for you. :0)

0

Yeah, things are looking up for my man! He might even win Iowa (or come in second to Ron Paul, which would also be a win, according to the pundit-types). And poor Newt! Much as I can't stand the man, I do feel a little bad for him (and Rick Perry, too), with how quickly they've fallen and how cruel their opponents and the media have been.

On another note, singles party sounds like fun! I still think I'll be alone tonight, though... alone and crying into my soju :)

Happy New Year, everybody!

0

Sometimes a bit of reflection is needed. I usually do that. This year was the first time in a long time that I partied. I partied for five days...and now I can't even find the motivation to work on ANYTHING.

0

It's nice to stay at home sometimes and let the parents spoil you a bit.

Me, I'm working New Year's Eve, so no rest for the wicked...err...the weary. haah

I know! Loving Padam Padam too! (I'm up to episode 7 right now.)

Loving all the guys in it especially - Kang-chil, Gook-soo and Im Jung.

Ji-na is falling a little bit flat for me though. Both the actress and the character, the way she's written. I mean, there is Kang-chil with his passionate and down-right honest outbursts, declaring his love, demanding her apology, etc. and she just... looks on.

I was actually thinking yesterday that her character sort of is like Bong Sun from Me Too, Flower! - a messed up childhood, messed up family, especially messed up father, but she's nowhere near as interesting as Bong Sun was....

A bit of a pity... but at least all the bromance makes up for it.

Required fields are marked *

I agree about Ji na : She seems cold to me at the moment. I think that she 's just the most deadly frightened heroine i've seen so far if you talk about love and affection : Bong Sun punched the man for the unexpected kiss, Ji Na seems paralysed and trapped in her body. She is the " object of love " for now, and i can't wait to see her unclenching her jaws.
Kang Chil is basically a fire you want to jump in.
Gook so is an enigma. The scene where he warned " marriage guy " telling him he'd better leave Ji Na alone because she wasn't meant for him : Woah : That's quite a serious threat.

I love Gook-soo. But as he said, he may be a guardian angel for Kang-chil, but he's not an angel for everyone.

But I'm dead certain Gook-soo won't survive this drama in the end.

Required fields are marked *

NO! NO, ALUA, NO!!!

I FORBID YOU from uttering those words. I feared it would be so, just from looking at the still and the premise. Angels don't last, do they? NO NO NO *plugs ears and yells gibberish*

0

Yes i also believe we will have to bid him goodbye. But i don't know why, i don't feel like it will be sad. More a liberation plus a reward than a grim death. Or i'm imagining things and it's just my wish.

0

Oh the twist is definitely with Gook Soo and I agree, he's gonna die. I kinda think he's crazy, but then again there's that light that comes from the amulet and the wings that spread out over the scene when a miracle occurs. Am loving how wings appear elsewhere, too - there was a big drawing of wings on a stone wall in one scene, for example.

0

Yeah, I see it as more of a transformation than a death, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Gook Soo is all about becoming an angel-- it's what he longs for, so I'm okay with it.

0

I think it won't be totally sad but it will be a little sad. Because Grandma and Jung and Gook-soo and all... I can just envision them as this lovely family, so that makes me a little sad, that Gook-soo won't get that.

But the transformation to becoming an angel won't be sad.

0

I agree. She doesn't seem cold, she seems scared. But there is no way to resist Kang Chil in the end, I think. How could anyone? Such intense, pure emotion. Such a simple way of looking at things. And that makes him so exactly perfect for a girl who lives in her head and thinks so much she can't act.

Good comment, Joanne.
I love everything about this drama - but the romantic intensity is off the charts. It practically vibrates off the screen. When he brings her back to the surface (after that stunning underwater lake scene) and just holds her above him in the moonlight, and the last scene in ep 8 when he finds her asleep.... let's just say my breathing was optional at that point. As in, forgot to...

It's wonderful seeing Bummie finally acting up to his potential. It's been a long time coming - he's doing a wonderful job.
I'm liking our female lead more now - the only thing I find distracting about her is how she TOTALLY looks like Lee Hyori! Enough that I keep forgetting it's NOT her.

If Padam Padam continues this writing/acting quality and has a polished wrap-up finale, it's going to be right next to City Hunter on my all-time favorites list. That's how much I'm loving it.

0

Great way to put it, JoAnne. I think (hope) that she'll eventually open up.

0

Padam Padam has to be the most gorgeous dramas ever. Actually I like Jina. I'm kind of tired of watching spunky outspoken female leads so I find her refreshing in a way.
This OTP has the most intense romantic chemistry I have ever seen and I think some of it probably has to do with how completely different they are.

I like all the characters. Ji-na seems like a frightened puppy to me. I like her although I'm not enamored of her.

As for death, I see it coming but didn't give consideration as to who would be the recipient. Honestly, I keep thinking Kang-chil because of all the AWESOME things that keep happening to him.

Love Gook-soo and his whole angel exploration process.

so happy to know that a lot of people are joining the padam padam bandwagon! it's definitely one of the best kdramas i've seen this year.

the acting is amazing, as well as the cinematography. kim bum and jung woo sung are rocking their roles! however, i have to agree with some of you. ji na seems kinda bland to me. i'm not really sure if it has something to do with the character per se or han ji min's acting. but it doesn't really matter coz she has a sizzling chemistry with jung woo sung!

Hello cmrprindle,
You are very welcome!!!! It sounds like your year started well, can I say "Yay!!!" or "Kya!!!" as they say in Kdramas (a la Secret Garden in the last episode when the OTP got married). I am glad to hear that.
So, what dramas are you currently watching and which ones are you liking so far? (do you feel "pulled in :-)" ?

0

Just watched You Are My Pet & listened to the OST, that's 2hours I'll never get back. I've seen (and liked) Jang Geun Seok in other films & dramas & I know he has charm, looks & some acting talent, but you'd never know it based on this movie. Poor writing & casting is the biggest issue with My Pet and let's not even discuss the OST and the fact neither of our leads have the vocal talents to make this even an OK OST. Think JGS is beginning to believe his own press. Perhaps he should stick to straight drama and stop with the musicals because JGS doesn't sing well & certainly can't pass for a dancer. Kim Ha Neul deserves some of the blame as well, didn't for a second believe the romance. Not a lick of chemistry between these two, which explains the poor showings at the box office. Sorry, cute only goes so far.

LOL, so true... I guess that's the editing? Or maybe the actual writing was also WTF but I found myself saying that throughout the movie as it skipped randomly from scene to scene!

0

Yeah I don't think he has an outstanding voice either. i remember that the OST of "You're Beautiful" had two versions for the same song: one sung by JKS and one sung by another singer/band. Guess which one was better. It's not like he can't sing, he can, but the voice is somehow too weak. Same for Lee Min Ho, though I listen anytime with pleasure his two songs (that one for Cass beer and the other one from BOF).

Required fields are marked *

Alright here's my professional (...biased...) opinion on JGS's voice. (Despite years and years and years of music school...I might have to go back on it because I love JGS.)

Anyway!

The natural quality of it is solid and has potential. But the boy can't sing in tune for the life of him. He needs some serious vocal training. I haven't seen the movie yet, but...now I'm scared.

Don't bother. It's stupid. There's not much plot exposition and it's just creepy to see a man acting like a dog.

The only thing that kept me watching it is trying to figure out how in the world he can look so much like a girl and yet not seem girly. It's gotta be the voice.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I gotta WATCH him doing something to remind myself he isn't a girl, cuz he sure looks like one in stills. Lovely deep voice, though, maybe that's it. Cuz he didn't seem girly at all in this. Maybe I didn't mind this show because the premise was so weird to me that I didn't have high expectations. I didn't hate it. But, I don't need to watch it again either.

0

Yes, Shel - the one saving thing in this is that he wasn't girly or fey at all. He was definitely a guy with guy interests and guy thoughts, LOL.

I hope the poor boy makes it out alive in real life...'cause he certainly seems to be teetering right now. So much pressure. The obvious comparison is MJ, sadly.

0

I worry for uri JGS too. I like him singing. I didn't care for the 'my bus' song. I think they lyrics got to me. I like "hello hello" better. Obviously since I arranged it. But ya, I love the manga and dorama so much that I'm afraid to ruin it.

0

I liked him singing that "My Bus" song in Mary Stayed out All Night (even if the lyrics made no sense).

Given all the comments I have heard about the film, I'm scared too. Well, maybe not scared, but expectations have been totally lowered. But I sort of don't care. That just means Kimi Wa Petto & Matsujun get all my love :-)

I remember I liked that song too. I looked up the lyrics and could not believe that people could let a song make no sense whatsoever. What bus? groupie bus? Universal Serial Bus? WHAT?

Haha, but still, I liked the song. And yay for you not having to dilute your love for the original. I kinda had the feeling that the movie would bomb. Kim Haneul hasn't really impressed me in any of the things she's done. She's go the aigoo cute act down, but that's kinda it. I dont expect serious acting from her.

0

I did like the songs in MSOAN too - Hello Hello and My Bus in particular.

0

@Jawavillager - I can't recall if I have seen anything with Kim Haneul in it. But I read a review today of someone who liked other films of hers, and said that this was the one thing he couldn't stand because it was just a "2 hour commercial for the JGS Corporation" (LOL!)

@JoAnne - I actually hated the Hello Hello song...

0

Be scared and don't watch it. It will seriously disappoint you and make you wonder and question his and KHN's judgement. L love JGS, I agree with you, I think he has naturally a good voice with potential, I think he's cute and charming... but not in this movie. It is uber boring, has no charm and the 2 moments of cuteness isn't enough to waste 2 hours on it. No chemistry is right except in the very end there is a bit of spark, but too little too late. And just really no story at all... if I hadn't read a synopsis, I would have even know what was going on watching the movie alone.

I really enjoyed the Japanese series which had moments of great emotional truth.

Nothing worked in this movie for me. I felt as if the writer--or the forces acting on the writer--had no idea why this story was worth telling.

0

Required fields are marked *

Watched it last night. I was hoping it would turn out good, cause I love the manga and the Jdrama, but it fell faaaaaaar short of my hopes and wishes, unfortunately. I think if I hadn't read the manga or seen the Jdrama, I might've been confused about some things. Knowing the full story helped me fill in the glaring gaps. When I watch remakes, I try hard to watch with an open mind and not compare versions, but there was no helping it this time. There were some cute moments, but they were too few and far between. I agree about the lack of chemistry, but I don't think it was totally JGS and KHN's fault. There were a couple of scenes in the movie, and the scenes at the end (shown during the credits), where they actually did spark a little.

However, the dancing and singing scenes made me cringe. If they had spent that time developing more of the actual story, it would've been better. Instead, the scenes made me think the movie was more of a vehicle for showcasing JGS's singing and dancing than telling a story. And I actually like his singing, but it was NOT necessary to the story and felt very much out of place.

In all honesty, I think KHN and JGS looked the part, but she wasn't hardcore enough at work or enough of the opposite at home - which could be a result of not enough time in a movie to adequately portray those characteristics. But JGS's attempts to emote anything except cute and playful fell way short. However, I think the main problem lay in the way the story was portrayed. Is that a script/writing issue? Directing? I don't know enough about that sort of thing to know where to point fingers, but I do know that the story was far too tame and sterilized. While I can understand the smoking being left out, they lost a lot of the story's meat by downplaying or barely touching on the sexual tension, how they come to need each other, and how it's only with each other that they can completely be themselves, without pretension or masks. At least, that's my opinion :) I also think this lack in the story played a large role in the lack of chemistry between JGS and KHN.

There was waaay too much story to try and pack into <2 hours. That's not enough time to give much attention to the wonderfully frank best friend or the relationship with her first love, so I can understand why many things were left out or altered. But the development of KHN and JGS's relationship could've been portrayed better, even within the scope of a 2 hr movie. Again, just my opinion.

As anti-smoking as I am, I can't believe they took out the smoking! Wow, what a loss in the characterisation, especially if other things were minimalised too.

I watched to get a JGS fix and now I feel like my impression and like for him is tainted. Movies are normally so peaceful because I don't have to worry about recapping or screen capping them, but this one left a horrid taste in my mouth. I later cleaned it out with Hello Stranger, a Thai film. I'm also going to need to finish recapping Kimi Wa Petto to wash my eyes.

Hellooooooo OT!

Padam Padam! Padam Padam! Wooohooooo! The first fifteen minutes of episode 7 were perfect - intense but cathartic. This drama is rocketing up to become one of my all time favorites.

Also - has anyone else seen You're My Pet? I just found it subbed this week on dramacrazy, and I gotta say, it was... bad. The jdorama was so cute, especially because the lead characters were both a little off and lonely, and we got to see them find solace in each other. Whereas the movie was just like a boring Katherine Heigl rom-com in which Kim Ha Neul and Jang Geun Seok kept shouting the fact that they are in a pet/master relationship. It was as if the movie was afraid for them to be a little weird since the premise is that nontraditional. And the last dance sequence? (SPOILER-ISH!) OMG. Unintended lols to be had. They took "Mandy," one of the cheesiest pop songs ever, changed the words to "My Lady," and added a choreographed wedding dance to it. Yikes. Now I'm starting to worry for JGS - can someone save him from his career choices?

I laughed and laughed when he started singing Mandy on the guitar, lol. And the wedding dance was too cheesy for sure. But, overall I didn't hate it, I've seen worse.

But we all watched it to the cheesy end, right? :)

LOL, yes. As much as I really didn't like it (I loved the drama and I love JGS so I was really looking forward to the film), I had to watch to the end because I don't like my endings unfinished or unhappy. (I also wanted to see more of JGS's face :P).

Of course I watched it to the cheesy end, lol. But, I still can't get over hearing a 70's Barry Manilow song in a Kdrama. That was weird.

I love Barry Manilow! When I was in 5th grade, my sister and I used to listen to one of his records (!) every night to fall asleep (this was in the 80s, but my parents had a lot of records from the 70s). Actually have a few of his songs on my iPod right now :)

I do, too, but not that one, lol. I saw him live a couple of times in the 70's.

I love him too and I actually do like Mandy...brings back memories of my 6th grade, tragically romantic self.

Now I'm just laughing, seeing all these comments. I watched YMP earlier this week and just KNEW what the reaction to it was going to be here on the OT thread.

Great minds think alike. :)
I've been giving some thought as to my overall impression of this movie. Oh, I know!!

IT SUCKED. BIG TIME.

There was more chemistry/humor/sexiness in the promo stills than in the movie. Talk about a huge lead-up for a stinkeroo of a film! How could there have been more of a disconnect? The promotion team deserves an award for it's camouflage job.

As for JGS - the boy should just give it up and wear a skirt, fulltime. At this point, he's not fooling anyone - texts to Lee Min Ho not withstanding. (i.e., "I LIKE GIRLS!!").

As much as I hated MSOAN, at least the OST was good and he did a good job with the songs. WTH happened here in YMP?! "MANDY"?!?! Shoot me now. And that totally inappropriate "Fame-ish" dance/singing number at the end?!! At least I got a lot of laughs watching YMP - for all the wrong reasons, but that's okay.
And Kim Haneul? She's a wonderful actress. She hit it out of the park for "Blind" and won Best Actress for it. Now I'm wondering if, while filming YMP, she KNEW just how bad it was and bravely soldiered through. Yeah, I'm gonna go with that rationale. Nothing else makes sense.

All I can say is

Awwwwwwwww. Korean rom-coms and dramas do sometimes scare away from venturing into the bolder (and riskier )plot possibilities. I get you.

This week has been all about "White Christmas" for me. You know, that KBS drama special :D. I loved the mood, the story, the cast. In fact I liked the cast so much that I even consider watching "Vampire Idol' and "Lie to me" for them alone.

That been said, I have two embarrassing confessions to make. Please be tolerant with me ;).

First: I'm not an "abs" girl. By that I mean that seeing those 6-pack abs doesn't impress me much. Or they even kind of scare me (probably because they remind me of the Bruce Lee movies that I've seen as a kid? dunno...).

Second: I am neither impressed by the shower scenes - please don't shoot me, I'm not agains them, really - because I usually see them as mere acts of hygiene. I like instead the scenes when the lead is soaked by rain, comes out from sea/lake/water or the lead girl for some reason pours water on him. Now that's pretty hot.

Bwahahaha. Plume that's so funny! 'Acts of hygiene'???

I don't like all shower scenes. Some DO admittedly look like acts of hygiene (I can't not use your phrase. It's stuck) but gimme a hot guy brooding in the shower....HOT HOT HOT...You can just imagine him wanting the water to wash away his angst. I gotta stop before the incoherent babbling starts.

Omg I'm laughing so loud now :D. I know I know this lack of response to shower scenes makes me a weirdo - what the heck is wrong with me?? I think I liked anyhow that one from City Hunter because of the scars, if i remember well. I didn't get to watch Ramyun Shop, but I'll check it for reference.

The "hygiene" association usually happens when they come out of the shower and they wipe their face with a towel, usually staring at themselves in the mirror. Since it is generally known how important the physical appearance is for these pretty actors, i can imagine them worrying in that moment about a pimple that's ready to pop or some new wrinkle. :)

omg, I loved White Christmas too! Such a good story and cast. I actually considered checking out "Vampire Idol" for them too...but I didn't after reading the recaps. The guy who plays Yoon Su is in What's Up which I'm currently watching though, as well as TWDR.

I find Vampire Idol utterly ridiculous, but since I live in Transylvania and I like those boys I'll give it a try, just for fun :D.

Must watch! I actually liked his character in White Snow the best. He added the spice'n'pepper to the show.

Ooh, you're right. Blows that Edward guy right out of the water.

Not that it would take much.

Yeah ! Happy OT ! Fire at will !

Hope everyone is doing fine and recovered from Christmas excesses when needed.

Going straight on topic : What i'm watching now :
- A thousand kisses : Just the romantic parts, skip everything else.
- Ojakgyo brothers : I like it very much. Blows the ratings. Deserved because it's the best family show aired right now imo.
- Padam padam : seen ep 8 sub. Very, very nice. Not a lot of Evil people running in it, and those who are have good reasons to do so.
- Brain : Your average korean medical drama. The writer doesn't want to choose his Major : Medicine, romance or political hospital intrigues. Major second male lead crush.
- What's up ? : seen ep 6 : Hooked. Characters, story, music.
- Color of Woman : Like it. Basically a sweeter version of I need romance : Good dialogues and funniest skinship excuses i've ever seen.
- Fermentation family : seen ep 6. Good surprise. Nothing much happens, it's like a quiet cruise on the sea. Strangely entertaining and heartwarming. And my eyes are directly connected to my stomach, so it may help.
- Bachelor vegetable store : seen 2 eps. Dropped for the moment. Maybe i will catch back later if good vibes surface on the web.

Taiwanese : ending Real love please and Office girls. Starting Skip-Beat with Siwon.
Seen first ep of Boku to Star with Kim Tae Hee. For some reason, ep 2 doesn't call for me.

BRAIN is my first Korean medical drama I've watched and I find it addictive.

The lead Shin Ha-Kyun has me mesmerized as Lee Gang-Hun. I've rarely seen an actor embodied rage in such an interesting way.

There are times when I firmly believe the character is a jackass, other times I wonder if he is insane, but still find myself rooting for him.

The Yoon Ji-Hye character is not match for him. I can't tell if it is the actress or the directing. The character comes off as less than bright. I don't know if it is a miss-cast and the actress has to play younger than she is, but for whatever reason she overshoots the mark for young and innocent and hits dangerously incompetent.

For the first time watching a drama, I think I'd be okay if the rich entitled second female lead stalker Jang Yoo-Jin got the guy. I find her character interesting.

Other pairings I'm rooting for is Lee Ha-Young (the lead's sister) and the sleeping doctor Yeo Bong-Goo. And the head nurse Hong Eun-Sook and Jo Dae-Sik- the doctor who can't stop drawing her.

Good morning Mystisith!
"A thousand kisses : Just the romantic parts, skip everything else."

So that means you're just watching 3 nano-seconds of ATK?
Heh - it gets more angsty and loopy as the episodes continue. Now I'm just hoping that the old toad dies in his hospital bed. Serve him right for being such a total load.
And I'm finding myself getting impatient with Mommy/MIL - she has a backbone. Why can't she use it and stand up? I want her to have a huge face-off with SIL, Toad Husband and Granny. They need to be put in their places.
The biggest puzzle about ATK is how I got sucked into it - something I'll be pondering about long after ep. 50 airs. :)

How did i get sucked into it ? LOL, that's easy to answer : I love Ji Hyun Woo. The always quiet, persistent, reliable, perfect lover guy who gets bullied by his noonas. I loved him in My sweet city and in Invincible Lee Pyung Kang.
I hate the old toad too, and the slimy evercrying mum. Want to kick their asses even if it's not politically correct to hurt a disabled man nor an elder.
Second couple sometimes seems cute, sometimes totally artificial.

And how funny is it that Joo-mi still calls her hubby "ajusshi"?! Gah!! Way to point up how much older he is (but it is great that his character has turned out to be the one with the most positive change).

Know who I really want to smack? Spoiled sister brat, let's-toss-pregnant-sil/sister-down-the stairs-and-then-deny-any-wrongdoing! - what a piece of work she is. She needs to be either tossed out of the house or locked in the basement (do Korean houses have basements?).

According to Personal Taste, hanok houses have basements. And this one seems huge to lodge so many people. Btw, " 3 generations under the same roof " when people are so selfish and mentally disturbed... I would find myself a good bridge on the Han River to settle my camp instead.
