Playful Kiss: Episode 14
by girlfriday
Lordy, I didn’t think we’d EVER get here. But here we are, and what a breath of fresh air it is to see Robot Boy stepping up to own his feelings. What’s even better is what he does afterwards, because as awesome as the kissing is, it’s much more satisfying to see them steer each other towards growth, and maturity, and a sense of self that doesn’t make me want to lose my lunch.
EPISODE 14 RECAP
Seung-jo’s jealousy-fueled, rain-soaked, you-can’t-love-anyone-but-me kiss leaves Ha-ni (and everyone else) a puddle of goo. At home, Dad is announcing their departure from the house, throwing everyone up in arms.
Just then, Seung-jo and Ha-ni arrive home, sopping wet. Mom sends them upstairs, but Eun-jo rushes up to his brother: “Oh Ha-ni is leaving!”
At that, Seung-jo does the unimaginable. He takes Ha-ni by the hand, sweetly interlocking their fingers, and announces that they have something to say. Omo! So soon?
Seung-jo: I want to marry Ha-ni.
Cue trumpets, dancing pandas, and stockpile of confetti. I seriously thought we’d be in for some more roundabout angst before he actually admitted the consequences of the Big Kiss, but hey, I’m all for forward movement. Bring back the Cute!
Mom squeals louder than twenty fangirls on speed, hugging Ha-ni and jumping up and down. Her statement to her son cracks me up: “Baek Seung-jo, why are you so awesome right now?” Hahaha.
Upstairs, Seung-jo says goodnight and Ha-ni stops him for a moment, scared that when they wake up, he’ll go back to being cold Robot Boy. He backhugs her (Who are you?) and casually tosses out, “Should we sleep together then?” Kyah! She buries her face in his chest, saying how much she likes him and that she never even imagined he’d like her back. Seung-jo: “Neither did I.” Heh, it’s dense, but totally honest.
Back at the restaurant, Duckie laments his stupid pushy move on Ha-ni earlier. Yeah, that was your downfall, buddy. He packs a lunch for Ha-ni and heads to campus to apologize…only to find a poster announcing Ha-ni and Seung-jo’s promise to marry.
Okay, what is with the convenient announcements all over school, all the time? I get that it’s cutesy, but as a plot device, (as in, a way for people to find out important things) it’s lame.
Elsewhere on campus, Seung-jo breaks the news to He-ra, who shows her disappointment, but basically acknowledges that everyone knew he liked Ha-ni, but him. She even understands exactly why it was so hard for him to realize it—because Ha-ni was the first problem he’s faced that he couldn’t solve easily, unlike everything else he’s ever encountered.
Seung-jo admits to having a really hard time with it, but now that he’s surrendered completely to Ha-ni, he’s happy. And it shows on his face. I’ve never seen him smiling so much, in all of the previous thirteen episodes combined.
He apologizes to He-ra, and admits that he really did think they were a good match, and that he felt comfortable around her. He-ra puts two and two together: he ran away from the discomfort of his feelings for Ha-ni, and took shelter with her, where he felt comfortable. Ouch. He doesn’t deny it, and she plays it cool, congratulating him even while her heart is breaking, which makes me respect her all the more.
Ha-ni laments not being able to tell Duckie herself, but he’s hurting too much to take her calls. He-ra takes out her heartache on a few hundred tennis balls, and Kyung-soo steps up at just the right time, as a shoulder to cry on.
Duckie takes to the river for his bout of angst, complete with beer and a song. Ha-ni’s heart weighs heavy all day too, knowing how Duckie must feel. She comes to Dad’s restaurant after closing, and when she appears, Duckie braces himself for impact. He tries so hard to put on a brave face, to keep her from saying the words out loud…it breaks my heart.
Just then, Seung-jo walks in, declaring that he likes Ha-ni, and asking for Duckie to let her go. That just raises Duckie’s ire, knowing how badly Seung-jo has treated her for four years, but then Ha-ni finally speaks up, and puts the nail in the coffin. Ha-ni: “Joon-gu-ya, I’m sorry. I’m sorry and I’m grateful.”
She starts to say the rest, but Duckie turns around, telling her to stop. He gets it. He knows. He’s always known, of course. With his back turned, he says, trying to lighten the mood, that Ha-ni has horrible taste in men, and that even if she regrets it later, he won’t go back to her. Aw, your stiff upper lip is killing me, Duckie.
He turns around with these words: “Baek Seung-jo, don’t forget that I’ll be watching you. If you make Ha-ni cry, I’ll make you cry blood.” Seung-jo takes the warning to heart, and Ha-ni looks up at Duckie, so sorry to cause him this much pain.
Dad returns to the restaurant to find Duckie a mess, and comforts him with soju. Duckie finally lets himself cry, saying that he wanted so much to call Ha-ni’s dad “Father.” What a great dad, to be at Duckie’s side through all this.
He-ra’s grandfather is about as happy for the couple as you’d expect, and he decides to pull out of the investment without any qualms. But Seung-jo shows up at his office to convince him otherwise. And then…he decides to invest and save the company. Gee, sap all of the dramatic tension, will ya? Is it too much to ask for Robot Boy to have a hard time at anything? Sigh.
At home, Dad announces that it’s time for Seung-jo to leave the company…and go pre-med. As his last duty for the company, he launches the new game. As He-ra and Duckie watch in the wings, He-ra is reminded of his awesomeness and Duckie is spurred on to become just as impressive a man.
Ha-ni receives her grades, and it’s bad news all around. She whines to Seung-jo that she thought she had brought her scores up enough to get better final grades, and he just replies that she must’ve miscalculated. Haha.
She looks to him for answers, and he just tells her that she got herself into this mess, and she has to work to get out of it. Defeated, she asks if maybe she should drop out.
WHAT? I’m seriously reaching into my screen to slap you upside the head right now.
Seung-jo nips her pity party in the bud, pointing out that while other students poured their sweat and tears into studying, she’s wasted all of her time in fruitless pursuits. He asks pointedly what she’ll do if she doesn’t go to school…have more time to follow him around? Damn. Straight shooter. He basically tells her to get off her ass and work hard at something, otherwise she’ll have nothing.
OH. THANK. GOD.
Baek Seung-jo, I have never loved you so much until now. LOVE. Fluffy bunny love.
Such a relief, because I really didn’t want to end this series hating where they took the characters. I know y’all think I’m hating on Ha-ni because she’s not going to be a high-powered doctor or lawyer instead of a stay-at-home mom or something, but that’s not why I’m angry with her. It’s because of this, right here, that Seung-jo is pointing out—that to her, it doesn’t matter what she does. And THAT is upsetting. If her dream in life was to be the best mom in the world, that’s an admirable dream. But it’s not—it’s to be whatever, whenever, as long as it’s with Seung-jo. It’s her lack of self that makes me angry, because I love her, I adore her…I want her to love herself.
If her goal in life was to be a golf caddy, I wouldn’t care. But the fact that she thinks there’s no difference to her, whether she’s a golf caddy or a nurse…is why I was so reviled at her so-called “dream.” Because that’s not a dream. It’s a lack of one.
Love is sacrifice and devotion, sure. I don’t discount that. But to me, true love? Is what Seung-jo is doing here—making her BETTER, the best version of herself. Because that’s what he wants for her. Because that’s what she should want for herself.
But Ha-ni, stubborn girl that she is, just gets mad at Seung-jo for pointing out her faults, and threatens to move out. He does the exact wrong thing, laughing that she’s got nowhere to go. That just fuels her defiance, and she leaves, declaring that she’ll go to another man. Mom worries, but Seung-jo tells her that it’ll be good for her, to be away from him for a while, and to focus on herself. Amen. To quote Mom, how come you’re so awesome all of a sudden?
Ha-ni heads over to her girlfriends, who give her the best kind of support—beer and girltalk. She stays at Min-ah’s house, and although she misses Seung-jo like crazy, the second she spies on him at school and sees him smiling without a care in the world, she decides to stand her ground and not return home. Look at you, growing a spine.
Mom frets over Ha-ni, but Seung-jo insists that they let Ha-ni deal with this on her own.
Ha-ni wanders the streets for a while, having been kicked out of Min-ah’s house because of visiting family. She walks and walks, finally letting the anger subside, and coming to a conclusion. Perhaps what Seung-jo said was right: she’s always lived for him, and never thought about what she wanted for her own future. She decides that she can’t return like this, and that she wants to marry Seung-jo as someone who is equally impressive and worthy.
SUCCESS!!!
You did it, Show! See, people—ask and you shall receive. I think my fight with Show mirrors Seung-jo’s fight with Ha-ni. I had to push, for it to struggle and come back around.
Ha-ni takes a job a local restaurant, and after finding out where she works from Min-ah and Juri, Seung-jo shows up for lunch. Ha-ni tells him that she’s thought long and hard about what to do with her life, and what she wants to be. She’s come to the conclusion that she wants to help Seung-jo and be by his side, so she’s decided to become a nurse. Well, that’s no surprise to any of us, but it’s still a mighty step up from freshman college dropout and professional stalker. I approve. Loving Seung-jo has helped you find your dream, which is very different from loving Seung-jo being your dream.
Seung-jo smiles and holds her tight, telling her to return home now. She sighs in relief, saying that she truthfully missed him like crazy. He knows, and makes it all okay with his embrace.
Once home, the family is back to its usual bustling chitchat, until Mom declares that everyone needs to clear their schedules for next Wednesday. What’s next Wednesday, you ask?
Why Seung-jo and Ha-ni’s wedding of course.
Bwah?
COMMENTS
The turnaround in this episode couldn’t have come any later. I would’ve broken up with you, Show. You guys know my patience is oh-so-thin for the kind of crap that went on in 12. Thankfully, Ye Drama Gods are whimsical but benevolent, and I was allowed to keep all the hair on my head this week.
I would like very much to thank Robot Boy for taking Ha-ni to task, and for turning out to be a rather excellent boyfriend, especially considering how much of a jerk you were for the entirety of your emotionally-stunted adolescence. I really thought that at the end I would just have to concede that you never truly earned her love and won her anyway, but sweetie pie, you TOTALLY earned her love this week. Bravo. Your gold star is in the mail.
I was rather impressed at Duckie and He-ra as well, despite their conflict being a little too easily swept under. But this isn’t their story, so I didn’t expect to even get the kinds of moments that we did, and I appreciated that they didn’t just disappear as characters the second that Ha-ni and Seung-jo stopped needing them as romantic obstacles.
Well I wasn’t expecting a wedding so soon, but I guess that’s where we’re headed in the last week. Not the most exciting cliffhanger to get us to the final stretch, but I’m sure there’ll be plenty of shenanigans before they make it to the altar.

GF, the producers of PK must've read your comments. When I saw the scene about Hani wanting to make something of herself, The first thing that came to my mind was your request for Hani to get sone self respect!
Bravo! And thanks for the amazing recap.

YEAAAHHHH BAEK SEUNG JO! YOU'RE HONESTLY AN EXCELLENT BOYFRIEND!! I love that you want her to grow a spine and teach her to stand on her own feet and want her to pursue a dream by herself! You worry about her and miss her and think about her but you're so frickin amazing because you don't give in to her whines and childish emotional manipulation but you show her that you love her all the same! You're wonderful!

We kept the faith... and there it is :) It couldn't have come any sooner. And for Ha-ni's wake-up call to come from Seung-jo himself? Show, meet Awesome. (I think I'm quoting GF here, lol.) I think it's great that they brought this turnaround, because it drives home to viewers the message we desperately wanted Ha-ni to get. I knew it was going to come eventually, though, and we'd just have to wait: they'd set up Ha-ni to be too great a person to just fall off and spend her days following Seung-jo around.
Thanks for the recap, GF! I'm actually going to miss the cute when the show ends. Esp. KHJ's smile - it gives me the warm fuzzies every time :D

SJ's display of tenderness is just so dynamically loving. This drama will be a classic "regular go-see" for those who need a vanilla ice-cream with strawberries & whip cream fix, just to smile & savor its delightful young love story. I will miss this drama. I hold a grudge against those that rant & got 4 episodes wiped out.

Part of me felt that Ha Ni's realization of her life goal was a bit of a cop out (especially since she started out by saying that she wanted to help him), but she was also the inspiration behind his life dream of being a doctor. To me, at least, SJ hadn't considered becoming a doctor until Ha Ni encouraged him to do so. It seemed to be the favorite of her career fantasies for him, and since she was always imagining herself right there beside him, perhaps to some degree she had wanted to be a nurse before SJ was set on the doctor idea. At least, that's what the feminist inside me wants to be true. :P
I also have to admit that the mom is grating on me much more. At first, she was harmlessly cute, but she's been pushing far too strongly lately. Seriously--getting married less than a year after high school? I know that's how the original story went, but I think waiting a few years would have been healthier. From what I gather from the comments, some liberties had already been taken with the storyline. I understand that having a wedding scene is important, but that all could have been in an Episode 16 flash forward (also so that we could see everyone that was jilted happily paired off).

Thanks GF for the quick recap, wohoo!
my favourite part is actually the part where I finally understand why SJ is the perfect fit for HN, cos he’s always so rational, grounded, collected and realistic, which is exacly what HN lacks, and really need, someone to rein her in appropriately, someone who is there to guide her, and give her the opp to mature and find her own path in life, not by dictating what she should or should not do, but rather, by letting her learn the hard way.
It may seem harsh or even cold the way he treat her, but i think it’s because he see things in her before she herself even know it, that’s how much he understand her, and he is being her best partner by letting her learn and explore things on her own, despite him already knowing how things will turn out.
I like this fact that he never once tell her to do this or that, or just love her blindly by being oblivious to her shortcomings or emotions (like Joongu), he really wants her grow and mature to be a better person, for herself!

P.S. I've been wondering why "netizens" power of complaint are so influential, comments that could cut a show short. I'm a "netizen" too!!! Why aren't my views ever able to make any difference! sigh. I know, I'm a grain of sand.

girlfriday, a million thanks to your amazing recap! we are on the same page on this show...
i stopped watching this show from ep 10 because i totally gave up on oh ha ni...but reading yr recap now just changed my mind and have decided to resume watching from where i left off....just so I can say that I always finish things that I started, haha.
whew! what a stretch though...is this Kdrama faithful to the original script/novel? the only reason i watched it in the first place was that i was curious why all the hoopla on the iswak tdrama version.
from the comments here i can say that not many people seem to have the patience for this type of heroine...although in real life many find themselves in the same quagmire, hehe. so maybe i think the reason this story is so popular is because when we are in love we do the same crazy stuff and only those who are watching us think us crazy but we do not find it any bit ridiculous at all to do the things we do. so this storyline strikes an oh so familiar chord for many of us.
crazy human race, eh?
thanks for going through with all of it...that's life for all of us! ;-)

Wow the way the director has moved some scenes around threw me for a loop. Actually, I haven't read the manga but I have seen the anime and TW versions so sometimes I wish I could forget those so I wouldn't realize all the scenes I am missing/that are being cut short (especially since I like this version so much). It's not like I want the same exact thing all over again...just, I know what there *could* be and it drives me crazy when there isn't...
Le sigh.
I'm really curious though how they are going to end it because there is still two more episodes and they are already getting married I'm assuming in 15 unless something else happens. Hm. At least the director chopped the figuring-out-her-future scene and threw it in here (in the TW version you have to wait a season and a half haha)! Interesting how these things work...
Thanks for the recap! Enjoyed it as always ;)

thanx for the recap GF!!...its been a wonderful last two eps for sure...and i officially like this show very very much
i was struck by something very curious while i was watching this ep today......usually i HATE the second female lead of the kind Hae Ra is and I love the ever l devoted second male lead of the type Jun Gu is but for the first time it was the opposite this time...ok maybe i didnt love Hae Ra but i definitely didnt hate her and maybe that is cuz she wasnt clingy....but Jun Gu phenomenon baffles me...i cant believe that very overpowering sedcond lead syndrome present in nearly every drama didnt take over at all in this show...not even once...i didnt even feel that sorry for him in this very last ep....its soooooo weird

OMO Super lightning speed GF! Yay!! Thanks baby
Ahhh round 14 already? (Another 2 to go T___T Waaa)
While watching this episode, I was actually have a muscle cramp coz my face can't left me from keep smiling all the way thru, even now while reading your recap... yah BSJ you're so awesome... and you're worth for every pride that OHN has been trampled on... yes PRIDE be damned.
From the sizzling hot kiss scene, to the ever-surprising-proposal, to a relax yet sweetest-ever-back-hug scene, to the ever-so-wonderful window scene, to another sweetest-ever-hugging in the public thingy....
AWWWW you do keep in my mind what OHN wants you to do in that her English book, don't you...
And I'm smiling from ear to ear while watching how irresistible you're and cant help to feel envy for OHN, you lucky, lucky snail!
What amazes me most is our little Eun-jo. He has predicted this kind of ending all the long. It is a fact that he is the sanest one from this wacky Baeks-Oh household combined.
And I just love mom reaction during the proposal. I guess she's more happier than OHN and BSJ combined. LOL Hands down, the most lovable-sweetest-wackiest-coolest mother-In-Law in Kdrama history...
YHR-BJG, both of I applaud for your effort to get your love, although it'll never work out, yet you try it anyway. It's worth a fight to lose anyway. Rather than admitting defeat without putting up a front. Kudos.
As I said it earlier, being happy is the first thing you need to be to achieve anything that is seem impossible. Keep smiling you two... Yeah especially you BSJ, coz it really suits you ^^

This week def had lots of action altho it feels more like a sprint to the finish line! Im glad everything worked out and its all a relief. Can't wait for the wedding either, hope it'll be a romantic one.
Glad they cut the # of eps down, I don't think I could have lasted an extra 4 eps of SJ "secretly" liking HN but treating her like crap.
In the future, I really wish they wouldn't remake dramas that have been done 2-3x over. It just takes all the suspense away when I know what's going to happen next!! arg.

Yes, it's torturing to watch HN suffers with SJ's coldness and always with HR, I feel so sick of it. Glad it's now all over.
They had omitted alot of other parts from the original manga - HN's birthday celebration, Christmas Eve Company party and also Baek's family new pet dog - it could be nice to watch but I think I can't take the "SJ “secretly” liking HN but treating her like crap."
Anyways I really like this cute drama with JSM and KHJ. Best K-drama ever!

I was squealing so much in the first ten mins of the show... Seung Jo holding hands with Hani~~~...just realised that was the first time they held hands!! Totally fell off my seat when he said "I want to MARRY Hani" OMG!!!!
When SJ smiled at the end of the scene telling Hae ra about him and Hani, I totally collapsed...Hae ra must be thinking "How do I bloody break up with you with you smiling like that???!!"
Cruel, cruel Seung Jo.

I'm loving the progress in this episode! If this drama had ended before she gained an ounce of self-respect, I would've felt very disatissfied.
Though, I seriously think the writer/director/whoever constantly makes wrong decisions. I mean, was I the only one thinking that, during the restaurant scene with Ha-ni, Joon-gu and Seung-jo, the tension could've been.. well, more, if she actually had to tell him instead of him already knowing? That scene (although Joon-gu is seriously breaking my heart) sort of lost the impact because he already knew, it wasn't just suspicion on his end. It's sad that she never has to own up to something herself, everyone else sorta always does it for her.. Ah well, it's still super-cute! x)

Lol... it's currently 4am here but I had to read the recap first before sleeping anyways.. haha
Anyways, THANK YOU GF!! why so fast though? you took me by surprise...
It's so funny how what's surprising for those who have not watched any of the other versions before is not for those who did, and what's shocking to those who have watched previous versions is not to those who didn't.
And glad seungjo is finally making up (big time) for being a jerk... sweet gentle seungjo is totally winning.
I would totally marry. Hani needed that push.
Anyways, I MUST sleep now... but will come back later... I'm just going to copy/paste a previous comment I did... It's the second time i'm doing this... hope this is not turning into a habit... -_-" but i'm so invested into PK these days I'm totally drained with all the school work to add to that... especially at 4-5am.
Need I say it? I loved the episode!! Honestly, watching the long preview, I dreaded the moment when I would have to dislike Hani, perhaps for the first time in the drama, for acting like a spoiled willful kid.. Turned out I didn’t have to, or at least for too long. And yes, you’re right about Seungjo being perfect for Hani… As much as I defended her bench conversation, her growth is certainly not a bad thing and frankly, only Seungjo can spur her to have the motivation to develop herself for the better. The girl does not have the highest opinion of herself and I believe she would have stayed unambitious if left alone, or worshipped. And I feel like Seungjo’s love can be truly felt when he forces himself to leave her alone for her own sake. You could tell he didn’t like doing it but knew he was right in doing it. Perhaps, in a way, it was even more heartwarming that all those hugs and smiles he finally let himself have for her… And I need to say this…
Seungjo being the sweet boyfriend is totally melting… Man, it was totally worth all the mess. I know if we have post-marriage life, we can see Seungjo’s love for Hani but honestly, even without it, i’m satisfied now… I can already see that he loves her very much. BSJ owning up to his emotions is not only relieving for him but also deeply satisfying for us viewers. Took you some time but you’re making up rather quite well I would say. Nothing guarantees my face splitting smile more than seeing the two lovebirds being ecstatic about their situation… seeing them IN LOVE just kills me. I say this with the particular window scene in mind… it was lovely. and I totally love it when he caresses Hani’s hair… To my future boyfriend: take careful note. I want you to craddle me like that…
Speaking of killing… my heart hurt badly for both Haera and Joongu in this episode… poor poor duckie… i hope you find your happy ending. how can you make me bleed for you even more when you confronted BSJ? you must be the most devoted dumped guy in history. However, I hurted the most when he was talking enthusiastically about the lunch box to the dad… I literally could feel my chest hurt, notwithstanding the stream of tears I had… I wanted to scream at the dad for letting Joongu hope even more…
btw, i was totally satisfied with the proposal EXCEPT for Hani’s dad response… somehow, it bugged me and didn’t feel as touching as I felt it could have. and also seungjo annoyed me for a split tiny second before i let him get away with it but who proposes without asking and involving the bride in the conversation first? As for the mom… LOL.. is it me or she seemed more happy about the marriage than Hani? and hani’s faces when the dad was bashing her was totally hilarious. XD
Eunjo… i totally heart you… you’re a sweetheart. a sourpuss sweetheart but still an adorable one. how i wish i could just squeeze you… haha.
About the kiss scene… hehe.. i got my wish that he would replay it.. but in a way, i wished he could have included the umbrella shot (which i hated) just so the kiss could have been longer… I wanted the umbrella to be cut… but also for an additional scene to be added. the kiss is still hot though.
As for haera… may I say that I LOVE Lee si young.. she’s an awesome actress and played her role quite perfectly… she’s just the right amount of everything… in the end, the character Haera in unhatable… not when she behaves with such dignity and being such a good sport… but also shows that she’s just as vulnerable as any girl when matters of the heart are concerned… The frustration she felt and the leading to her release of emotions and tears were brilliantly done. Bravo. As for her bitchiness…. for me, it was always less the bitchy and mostly the funny and to be taken lightly.
As for Hani becoming a nurse…I'm proud of her... she needed that push from Seungjo to mature and grow up and to sort out her thoughts for herself.
Poor seungjo had no idea what mama baek had in mind when he said that the wedding wasn’t coming soon… it’s right up your nose you robot boy… and be glad for it… you’ll be marrying the most loveable girl out there… although said girl could use a shake or too for behaving so childishly (i won’t lie… i did worse… it rarely happens but when it does, i’m basically a drama queen in real life. but then, it’s always easier to see what’s wrong with it when you observe someone else than when you’re doing it in the heat of emotions).
Honestly, I don’t want PK to end at all.. this is one of the few dramas when I don’t want it to end so soon… MGIAG is lovely but I thought it ended at the perfect time… as for PK, there’s so much more to explore, so many moments to squeal/angst/cry/laugh over and so little time left. Event the 7 episodes won’t quench my longing for more… especially when I just received the blow today that they will merely be 10 minutes episode… Show, I need more..

Am I the only one who thought it was ridiculous to see such a sudden 180 degree turn to Seung-jo? I was giggling for most of the beginning and not because of how good it was. More like....because of how nonsensical it seemed.

I don't think it was 180 degrees. I think Seung Jo was happy to just let go and do what he's always wanted to do.
One of the thing that made me want to slap SJ was not only his meanness towards OHN. It was the fact that he was so comfy w/He Ra. He smiled, flirted, and talked to her. So the potential for his awesomeness was there. I was mad because it was directed at the wrong person.
Finally, it is now directed at the right person. Thank heavens. We get so much squeeee moments when all that awesomeness comes out with the right person.

I disagree. We saw hints of it before but it took him finally owning up to his feelings for him for him to be completely comfortable around Ha-Ni. The only person he was really uncomfortable around was Ha-Ni. He treated others, like He-ra and his other friends this way.

it wasnt a sudden move or change with Seung Jo... i was actually happier with the korean version compared with the taiwanese version because they showed how robot boy aka ice king slowly thawed for hani.. little hints like waiting for her to appear in the fast food place where she worked, making sure ha-ni was present when that student they were tutoring appeared in order to clear up that mis-understanding without actually telling hani.... and the fact that he had been orchestrating those events means he had been thinking about ha-ni and contemplating of ways to spend time with her..... how about grabbing ha-ni to run off when the gangster people chased them when he was supposed to be on a movie date with hera... or how about that scene where he-ra texted seung jo and he instead texted ha-ni... and he had been quite frustrated with the ha-ni - duckie for a while.. remember that little banter by the han river that seung jo started??? if that isnt jealousy, then i dont know what is.....

Well, he did say they will finish college first and solve the mess at his dad's office before they get married. It's the mom who wanted the marriage to happen super fast.
I think in Seung Jo's mind, it's more like a period of engagement. He's asking her dad for her hand.. they'll date.. then they'll get married. Where is she gonna go anyway? She's already in his house. Marriage would likely be just a formality.. depending on how traditional his family is towards that kind of arrangement.
About him asking Hani's permission to marry.. is that a joke? The girl wrote it in her textbook, followed him around for nearly 5 years, nearly married someone else out of despair over his impending marriage. I doubt Seung Jo needs longer time to mull over his proposal to Hani.

Thanks for the recap!
Baek Seung Jo was right to kick Hani in the proverbial behind, but ouch! The comment that she was no longer cute without her perseverance had to hurt. But in the end all was right because Hani got some self motivation finally and BSJ went to her friends to find her after all.
I loved the parallelism in this episode. Hani needed to find herself so she moved out, got a part time job at a restaurant without her family interfering and did some self reflecting just like Baek Seung Jo did earlier. What made me laugh was Hani figured herself out a lot faster than Baek Seung Jo. She took only 2 days? You go girl! What made me made sad was that no one was paying any attention to Hani at the dinner table. She obviously wanted to share her decision but it all got lost in the wedding announcement made by mom.
I agree that BJG and Hae Ra actors were also stellar and made me love them all the more.

i didn't watch jp/tw version but read numerously that they were so annoying. now i understand it. all the characters except seungjo(though KHJ was still annoying), hera, hani's dad, are all pathetic but show just try to make it look like adorable only because our heroine and her supporters are supposed to be loved no matter what in a dramaland.
in an earliest eps, sj' mom get sj hurt by raising him like a girl and yet use it(photos) again to match sj and hani.
she never knew hani before. show doesn't give an explanation why she loves hani so much. just because she is your husband's friend's daughter? all i witnessed is that you want a daughter for your own pleasure and it happened to be hani. everyone says sj doesn't deserve hani's love but i don't think hani deserves sj either.
i coudn't "see" the development in sj' feeling to hani and
it's partly the fault of acting and directing.

Really? I think we saw hints that he cared for in several episodes, especially in the last few. He definitely kissed her the first time because he wanted her around. Then there when her found her chocolates, and he ate her cooking, when he saved her and not He-ra at the movies, the kiss at the woods, when he stopped the fight between BJG and the other guy and just took Ha-ni away, when he wore the red-checkered shirt because she said she liked it. Maybe he didn't like her as much in the beginning but I think he grew to love her over time. And we can definitely see hints of his development throughout the series. It just took him owning up to his feelings for us to actually see it in this last episode.

"....i coudn’t “see” the development in sj’ feeling to hani and it’s partly the fault of acting and directing..."
I have to disagree here. One of the reasons I like this version is because I could "see" the transistion of SJ's feeling for OHN.
And it wasn't just the jealous reactions but in the little gestures, facial/eye expressions. An example is that graduation dinner of the first kiss. It wasn't the kiss that told me he was interested in her.. it was the fact that he stepped into the restaurant and the first thing he did was looked around for her...
I was never a subscriber to the belief that to be a good actress/actor you have to have exaggerated facial expression/gestures. I love actors who can convey messages using just their eyes.
I am not saying that KHJ is a fantastic actor. But in my humble opinion, he does well in this role. I could "see" the transition of his feeling for OHN.

Eh I think you missed Mama Baek's anecdote to Hani when she first moved in for the reason why she dressed BSJ as a girl. It definitely wasn't for personal kicks but she was anticipating a girl so much when she was expecting but got a son. Nonetheless, she thought she could try to realize the dream for a little while since she prepared all the girlie stuff already. Something clicked when she met Hani and somehow a strong bond of attachment formed.

Yeah! A SEASON II !!! We should start a world chant of "we want PK Season II". Just like "They Kissed Again" of Taiwan, let's call this "Playfully Kissed". Plot = while Hani is in nursing school, some Assistant Teacher who is super handsome, smart, kind, funny, takes on a crush on Hani and playfully kissed her and caused shock & confusion in her heart because as of late, SJ was too busy with med school and neglected Hani. Thus a rival is in the picture and shakes up their marriage, and SJ learns his lessons in marriage relations.
Hey, I should be a script writer. Haha.

I beg to differ. As much as I like PK, I love Kim Hyun Joong more.. and I want his solo album to come out next year (don't kill me!) and dragging this drama for a 2nd season is gonna delay its release. I'm dying to buy his first work.
Perhapd I'm the only PK fan who's actually grateful that the drama is gonna end at the 16th episode. KHJ seemed to suffer a lot after BOF and I don't want him to get sick filming PK for too long. The person who could sleep anywhere and anytime he wants, is currently becoming an insomniac... I just don't like it at all.
I'm glad he's done PK, a type of drama that otherwise I would not have watched (I hate spineless heroins). He turns Naoki Irie into someone I can empathize with, whose actions I can defend despite the many bricks I throw at him... and for me that's a feat.
I'm sad that it's ending, but I'm also happy that it's ending. That's how I feel right now, with only 2 more episodes coming up before PK lowers its curtain.

thanks gf!! your great as usual!!!!
and your right, as long as we asked the drama gods will listen! esp. when many people asked for it.
this episode was the best for me so far. it sealed all the questions whether seung jo really do care or love hani.
i really love how they played the announcement of engagement with simplicity. it doesnt have frills and grand gestures, but its doesnt mean its not heartfelt. you can feel the sincerity in the scene which i think is great. it also have touch of reality in it.
joon gu and haera are great in this episode. they dealt with their heartaches with grace and face still held high. these two i think deserves a happy ending too.
to our OTP
hani, your miracle is already here as referring to your question to eun jo in episode 7. im also glad that even though its a bit late you found the direction that you badly needed. and also enjoy the fruits of your labor of love. even though seung jo is still bit rough and cold, he surely loves you.
seung jo, wow! thankfully you really stepped up and owned up to your feelings. im happy to see the warm smile upon your face as if the burden of the world was lifted from your shoulder. thank you also for pushing hani to be the better person, even though someone will think its bad of you to do or say those things to hani still you do it bcoz its you know its for the better. those actions showed how much you love and value her.
excited for the next week's episode, do we need to get ready for the wedding? when we will receive the inivitation? i hope they send it at the correct address.

Thanks for your great recap and your comments Girlfriday!!!
I'm totally with you there, concerning HaNi's lack of real goal for her future. It didn't bother me in ep 12 but now it's time she starts finding her own thing. And way to go, Seung Jo!!!Although he may seem harsh to some people, he did the right thing by "shaking" her (I wanted to do that myself to HaNi as she was whining about her bad test results) and making her find the time to think deeply about her future. She needs to have a goal in life other than to follow Seung Jo around. lol ^^
I'm glad to see that she decides to become someone worthy of him!
Did you notice that even her friends also try to make her realize that? Even HeRa in her own way gives Hani the "push" that she needs...
Anyway, it was a great episode. :) loved it!

Wow! What can I say, everyone seems to have said it all. After episode twelve's recap I was beginning to lose faith, with the recapper (sorry girlfriday, couldn't help feeling it at that juncture) and the audience.
I love Itazura na Kiss, both live drama and anime, ISWAK and PK, every version, be they with bad or good acting, cinematography, editing, directing, etc., etc., and I was becoming more and more disappointed with everyone's constant gripes about every little thing in PK and not enjoying the story for what it is. A light, humorous love drama (might I dare to say here based on very realistic situations) about two still very young people trying to find their way in life and love.
Okay, BSJ is cold and mean most of the time, and he's no Mr. Perfect by any long stretch of the imagination, but his love runs deep. OHN does have obsessive tendencies, but it is this tenacity that has turned her into the woman SJ loves. Once she makes up her mind and sets her goal she goes all out until she achieves it, no matter how hard it gets or how long it takes, even if it is unimaginable for her capabilities, she goes and proves everyone, including herself, wrong. And please don't misinterpret, I don't mean it was good for her to dog SJ or be persistent to the point of annoying sometimes.
Both BSJ and OHN are teenagers on the cusp between the last of their childhood and the start of adulthood, and the story here illustrates that journey between the two states beautifully. It didn't matter whether or not that the author used SJ and HN's characters to illustrate this or not, but because she did these characters showed us this journey in a meaningful way. It is difficult, it is cold, it can be mean and harsh, you might get lost, become hesitant, full of indecisions, feel pain, of the bad kind, but yet it is tempered with fun, excitement, the happiness of youth and yet more pain, of the good kind. Ultimately, the important thing is it leads to fulfilment, joy and love if you arrive at the right place, not just for HN and SJ but for the people around them too, even HR and JG, who will have to take their own journeys to discover their own final harbours with the right persons for them. To many SJ might be cold and mean, to me he is wise and caring. I'm glad he has finally found the person who can help him to bring all this to the surface, likewise for HN who has SJ to help her to dig deep inside herself. If anyone cares to look deeper this story is not just fluff. Again, don't take me wrongly, I know the original manga wasn't a great work of literature and wasn't intended to be viewed as such. We all have to take or have taken the same journey to adulthood and the very simplicity of this drama is sufficient and have done the job admirably to illustrate that. Some of us may have enjoyed the story's humour and some of us have not, which is fine with me, but I do wish everyone would enjoy PK for what it is rather than looking for something it isn't.
One little thing I thought I had to mention, I don't think SJ has been treating HN badly for all of those four years GF mentioned in the recap. He couldn't have when he didn't know of her existence before her confession. For some of those years, can't remember what they said in PK, but in ISWAK it was two, she had been admiring and loving him from afar and only until their paths crossed did he knew about her. I'm not a masochist and I know SJ's words can cut deep, but to me I could feel his love in everything he does for and with HN, even when he was being harsh (I know it's easy for me to say because I'm not HN on the receiving end, but SJ's love in the early part of the story was meant for the viewers' eyes only).
This week I was floored by both recaps here and the ones I read over at ockoala's. They were all exceptional and apart from the odd, light complaints here and there, I'm glad the audience have redeemed themselves and have stopped all the strong gripes.
Perhaps I might be speaking too early since I haven't read every single comment, but from what I have read I am happy that the audience is finally happy.
Thank you, for making me happy.

Ahhh Finally the snail has made its way near to the finish line…
It’s amazing how we can see things differently; our different reaction speaks what our thoughts are like… Some may seem too harsh, some may be too gentle, some may be don’t even bother at all, some may clap, some may throw stones, some may give that cold stare, some may reach out their hand to help, some may scream, or shake; either way, we all feel for this snail to proceed to succeed.
It’s funny how sometimes we tend to put our expectations too high into people; that it may supersede the ability that they have. Coz the more impossible, the more joyful it gets. That what we want is best for them; but what’s best for us may not be what’s best for them. And sometime we even see ourselves in them, sometime because we have/ haven’t reached that goal/ dream; we dare for them to do the same. (Like when your father failed/succeed to become a doctor, so he encourages you to do the same. It feels as if when we did become doctor, their dreams had come true.) It’s a part of us human who tries to get that satisfaction; but satisfaction for human is endless. We always wanted more.
Whether it’s a silly dream, a big dream, the right dreams... It is only dreams. Today I may want to be a Painter, the next day I may want to be the President. Probably for some people what matter is whether we can make that dream come true, logically; for some may be just for the fun of it, at the spur of the moment; regardless how childish it may sound? And most of the time even I myself didn’t know if my dream is really what I wanted, for certain. Perhaps there’s immaturity in me; in all of us.
So I always reminding myself that the end result may not all that matter, perhaps the excitement of the journey is. Figuring; how are we going to get there? Who am I doing this for? It’s like solving the math problem; we can’t find the answer without doing all the steps, mistakes, without knowing the formula. And in this case the snail had already known its formula (BSJ) and now making its way to fulfill it.
In education, or learning process, we the public can either be the punisher or the counselor or just a watcher. I’m not saying that either is right or wrong, better or worse, but it’s what the society is, with our different way of judging what’s best for our living; and it varies from one another. VANITY is only a veneer that we society generate in order to make sound what worth we’re living for. Do we need to live according to this society standard, in order to get respect and a sense of self? What’s up with that? Like from that movie Picture Perfect starring Jennifer Aniston; [“Why do I still need to dress myself up, in order to get the job, which I fully deserved based on my ability alone?”]. It’s funny, huh.
To me, in the end what really matter is your heart; whether we find peace or not, whether we find happiness with what we believe in. I myself haven’t really reached to that point. And for me it’s too pretentious to say that I’m all independent, as most of the time I depended on others as well; whether at my work or my personal life. I can’t really say that I’m all happy by myself; I’d be crazy to laugh all by myself. I find that I’m happier because of other people; being with others. Like now, we can share our view and understand with one another.
I’m really glad that our little snail here doesn’t get influenced by these norm standards. You know what you want all along, girl; to assist BSJ. If this is what makes you happy then just do it. Live your life for you and not for the society. Screw vanity, screw respect. Laugh all you want, coz I’m happy.
In short; Love is to share; Happiness is peace; Vanity is a shell; Dream is infinite; Identity is heart; and independent is tireless, it never stops.

Its not easy to like this kind of story line for progressive woman... If u dont find any issues with the weak portryal of the lead female either u are conservative - you may not find anything wrong with it or you are a romantic - u find it all cute because havent seen such situations in real life and dono how bad it can get.

Whoa, and I thought I was just making a comment about a drama that I like and here I find a reply in response to my opinions that's bordering on the personal. From a faceless stranger who has no idea of my life or my past, no less.
Anon, I can only suggest you re-read my original comment again, with a more open mind this time. I was simply saying what I felt about the story, and how the author used SJ and HN's characters to illustrate the journey to adulthood, their personalities being the pitfalls or delights one must come across as youths on that journey.
I never suggested everyone had to like PK or the other adaptations of Itazura na Kiss. I was just stating that I was happy that at last, at this stage in the drama, the complaints about Ha Ni's behaviour, etc., that were ruining the story for those who are truly enjoying the drama have more or less come to a stop. I believe in freedom of speech and everyone is entitled to their opinions, me included, I hope you can see that. There were really a torrential of complaints dotted all over the ViiKii videos and on DB which were probably upsetting some of the fans who are watching PK as a piece of entertainment and no more. The fact that it has brought so many people together online to discuss about it is amazing. I think you should remember that we are here to discuss the drama, not to make assumptions of the personalities or lives of the commentators.
I didn't say there were no issues with the weak portrayal of the lead female either, in fact I went as far as saying it wasn't good for HN to dog SJ the way she did; but instead of taking it seriously and complaining I simply take it as OTT humour by the mangaka. This is obviously not to everyone's taste but I'm watching TV, not addressing it as HN's mother.
Despite what life has thrown at me, I can admit I'm still a romantic, nothing wrong with that, I'm relieved that even after an unhappy marriage I can still enjoy watching a romantic comedy without railing against the likes of BSJ, who may be cold but at least he loves HN. As for real life, my ex-husband wasn't just cold and mean, he was also a gambler and a womaniser, he wasn't handsome, clever, rich, caring or loving like SJ, so does that mean I'm not allow to enjoy PK because SJ's mean behaviour might bring painful memories? I like to say I'm an independent woman who has fought against many odds to raise my children alone, but does that mean I have to find faults with HN because she isn't perceived as strong by the feminists out there? Life is too short, I know what real life is and I know how bad it can get but I watch dramas as a hobby, not because I want to be up-in-arms when the characters are not portrayed to my liking. I don't like to think of myself as being either conservative or progressive, but rather I am simply, me, and the me as I am now can be seen as progressive by my parents, or as conservative by my sons. To put simply, I'm an individual, life is short so don't take it so seriously all the time otherwise you'll find life has gone past you and you don't know where it has all gone to. Be like SJ's mother, now she's a woman who knows how to have fun, yes annoying sometimes, but nevertheless a modern mother and woman too. If she doesn't see anything wrong with her daughter-in-law, then who are we to say HN's weak.
Nowhere in my comment did I mention the word cute, but if I do think of the story as cute, again like those who are enjoying the drama I don't think there's anything wrong with that either. HN is silly sometimes and SJ is a boor most of the time, but I like to call a spade a spade and if a scene is done cutely then it is cute. I'm not going to call it something else just because I didn't like the overall story.
Sorry DB for ranting here, but I'm afraid Anon riled me a little and I couldn't help thinking this person was rude to make assumptions about an unknown person.

Good for you girlfriday, I already broken up with the show after episode 10. Even though episodes 13 and 14 were really good, it's too late now to heal my broken heart. I'm just gonna read your recaps. Thanks

Just want to comment about the kiss scene at the start.. I think the production team has been given much flak on how people just truly despise that umbrella so they took it out.. LOL. (that edit totally cracked me up) It must have been the most despised umbrella in the world right now. Poor thing.
